2. Causes of the Revolution
•Open Field System- no fences- disputes among the farmers.
•Owners possessed small strips of land- Scientific methods of
cultivation impossible.
•The Three field System- First and second parts wheat and Barley-
third part left fallow.
•Did not have any secondary occupation- except weaving- farmers
remained poor during non-monsoon season .
•Population increased.
3. Changes brought by Agrarian
Revolution
• Sir Robert Western and Lord Townshend replaced three
field system by the four- field rotation system.
• Wheat, turnip, barley and clover were grown
• Cultivation of Turnip and Clover added to the fertility of
the soil.
• Benefit : fodder available for cattle in Winter
• Farmers affectionately called him ‘Turnip Townshend’

7. Result
• Increase in the yield of food, milk, meat and
wool
• Small farmers suffered a lot
• The Deserted Village- Goldsmith described the
tragic disappearance of farming anf farmers
became beggars
