Madmen
1. Madmen
In the opening scene there is a close up shot of a man
drinking whiskey and smoking. This conveys a stereotypical
man, as whiskey is a masculine drink. As he is talking to the
waiter another waiter asks if he is being bothered. This
shows discrimination as the waiter he is talking to is black.
Also the fact that the man has his own booth away from the
rest of the bar shows that he is powerful and high up.
In the second scene there is a deep focus shot of the woman
pouring a drink for the man. This shows that she is used to
pouring him drinks, as he does not ask for it. Also in this
scene the woman drinks whiskey, this shows that the
woman may have power, as whiskey is a stereotypical mans
drink. At the end of this scene the man is using the woman as
a cushion and the woman is smoking, the stereotypes for
each gender have been swapped around, as it should be the
man smoking and the woman lying on the man.
In the next scene there is a birds eye view shot of the street
below the building, there is a shot of three men in an
elevator. They are talking, laughing and making remarks to
the woman in front of them. As the woman is not saying
anything and just standing there it conveys the dominance
men have over women. Also in this scene a man is talking on
his phone to his fiancé telling her that he loves her, this
could convey the fact that women have the ability to make
the men love them.
In the next scene an employee is showing around the woman
from the elevator as she has a new job in the building. The
employee tells the woman all of the things she will need to
keep for the man she works for. This also shows that men
have power over women as she has to provide everything
for the man. The employee is also giving her tips on how to
dress and act as the employee is more experienced than her.
2. The clip I watched mainly represents the stereotypical
gender types, however there are a few parts where the
woman is more masculine than they should be.
