1. Trailer analysis
Mise en scene:
The smiley character’s costume hair and make-up is really simple as the
costume is simple as he wears the mask and a black shirt and cargo trousers which is a really simple
costume, make-up effects are on the mask with the smile made from stiches in the mask and the
blood effects in the eyes and mouth.
The lighting is dark but the small amount of light is on his face enough so that we can see the full
effect of him, the setting is concealed by the close up of his face.
There are no props in this scene and the layout of this specific scene is that Smiley is taking up the
entire view so that we can see only him and not what he is doing or who else is there with him but
we can predict that in this scene somebody will die.
This character has a distinct mise en scene as her hair is all over the
place in a panicked manor like she is worried or has just been chased. Her costume is ripped like she
has just been attacked to create worry and panic within the audience by seeing the state of her
costume will affect the way the scene is looked at. In this scene her make-up is paled on her face to
make her look ill and in shock from what had just happened in the scene before other than that
there are no other make-up effects.
The lighting in the scene illuminates the top half of her body so we can see her ripped top and her
panicked face this will excite the audience and keep them wondering what will happen next. The
setting in this scene is simple as it is placed in the woman’s bed room this will create an aura of
safeness.
Props in this scene are the bed that she is sitting on, the mirror to her left and the tea mug but they
are not that significant they are only there to make it believable that this is a girl’s room. The layout
of the scene is to create fear but also a sense of safety for the character as she believes she got away
from her assailant.
Todorov: during the trailer there is no state of equilibrium we can tell this because of the constant
state of fear that is carried out throughout the entirety of the trailer and there are no happy
moments. The recognition of the disruption is sensed with the main woman In the trailer when she
knows there is something going wrong and there are killings happening around her. There is an
attempt to restore the equilibrium by the main character but fails to do so as the killings carry on
2. happening. There is no reinstatement of the equilibrium as the killings carry on happening in the
trailer and there is no stop to the fear within the film.
Special effects: the special effects that happen all throughout the trailer are simple effects such as
flashes of white to cut to another scene, blackouts so that the text can be put on screen (information
about the movie).
Camera work: during the trailer there are a lot of eye line shots and over the shoulder shots to
create effects such as being chased so you can see the killer and the eyeline so that we can see the
reaction of the character but we cannot see what they are looking at. I think that a low angle shot
could have been very effective in certain scenes with smiley when he kills someone or when he is
needed to be menacing.
Editing: during the trailer there is a gentle flow of continuity editing so that the scenes and shots run
smoothly and look good, there is a lot of cross cutting from one scene to another of smiley killing
someone to a policeman talking to another person. There was one use of a matched cut when smiley
had killed someone and then cut to him chasing the main woman down a street.
