Mise en scene-role and status!

In this clip when the chef is teaching his staff respect, there is a low
angle shot of him talking and his staff listening. This represents him
as well respected as we look up at him as his staff do, also the fact
he’s talking about respect symbolises the respect his staff have for
him. We see this through extreme close-ups of the staff’s eyes that
are squinted at the same point in this clip, this shows that they are
concentrating on what he is saying and showing interest therefore
respecting him as a leader. Also in this scene of the clip the setting
is located in a kitchen. There is no natural light, and the colours
are all washed out into blues and greys. This represents the kitchen
as cold and sterile, whereas it represents the chef as being in
control as his setting is very controlled and not natural.

Also in this clip, we see a young looking woman. She is
represented as well respected and high class. This is shown
through her performance and expressions. When we first see her
through an over the shoulder mid-shot looking at her in the mirror
putting on her red lipstick. This represents her as quite refined and
posh as we associate red lipstick with posh, elegant and
successful women. There is a long-shot when she’s walking with
the chef. She is walking very upright, this represents her as being
very prim and proper because it’s conventional of a high class
lady in a TV Drama to walk in the correct manor. Every time the
woman is on screen the same piece of music is played. It’s a
piece produced from a score played by an orchestra. It is quite a
posh sounding music which ties to this woman and represents her
as posh. She wears a red blouse and black trousers, this represents
her as sophisticated. Although it goes against the convention, as
usually a woman as high a status as her would be in a red or black
elegant dress.

In the beginning of this clip there are three bin men sat eating
their lunch. We see the men in individual close-up shots on their
faces. They are represented as rude and disgusting because the
close-ups show them eating with open mouths and talking with
their mouths full, which is seen as rude and lower class. At the
beginning of this scene there is an establishing shot of a beach
with loads of litter on it. We assume it’s a beach because there is
an ambient sound of seagulls and waves, which manipulate the
audience to think that. This shot represents the three men as lazy
and dirty. This is because there is so much litter about and they just
sit around in this dirty environment eating and doing nothing,
which again shows lower class and very little status. Also in this
scene, when they are sat eating, there is a low-angle shot of the
front of the van showing the rubbish in the windows and the three
men eating. This represents them as very low class and slobby.
However the shot does go against convention because a low
angle shot is usually used to represent higher class people. Finally
in this scene there is a mid-shot of the three men sat in the van
eating. This shows the costume off clearly to the audience. All
three men are wearing the same thing, this represents them as
being a team and belonging because they clearly wear some
sort of uniform which makes them seem together which shows
them lower class but shows a little status within their group.

Overall, status and role are shown through many different
techniques as we watch them during these scenes. We are shown
that the bin men are conventionally low class and seen as dirty
and disgusting with very little status, the head chef is seen as
manipulative and well in control with high class and lots of status,
and the lady is also a high class lady with lots of status.
