The document analyzes 6 screenshots from a scene depicting an interrogation between two women and one man in a safe house. The screenshots show the women physically looking down on the man and displaying body language that suggests they are in positions of power over the man. This challenges gender stereotypes by presenting women as authoritative figures interrogating a man. The two women depicted have contrasting appearances, with one portrayed as more masculine and the other more feminine, representing a contemporary view of diverse women. Facial expressions and body language in the shots imply the man is growing desperate and frustrated by his lack of control or authority in the situation.

Analyse the representation of women.
The text used is an authentic
typewriter style text which is related
to our stereotype of MI5.
The scene is set through a dolly shot leading through the safe house with text coming up on
the screen. The dolly shot makes it feel as though it is the audience who is going into the
safe house which entices you to watch as you feel involved with what is going on.
2. When we arrive at the action we are presented with two women standing up and one man
sat down. This height difference shows that the women are in power and the man isn’t. This
differs from the normality of having men in a position of power. The two women in the
scene are opposing in their appearance and therefore our judging of them. The woman
leaning on the wall has short cut hair and is wearing a leather biker jacket, this makes her
seem very masculine and makes the audience think she is possibly a lesbian or trying to go
against the stereotype of women. The other woman is dressed in a smart low cut suit and
had blonde hair. This is more stereotypical of what the audience thinks a woman working in
MI5 would look like. This varied representation of women makes the programme
contemporary and modern in its view of women.
The use of body language in this shot makes the woman seem angry but also in power as
she has her arms folded and is looking down to the man sat down on the table. Much like
how she would treat a misbehaving child.
3. This shot shows the more masculine woman in the foreground leaning over the table
looking down on the man maintaining eye contact and looking down at him. All of these
things give the impression that the woman has authority and is almost telling the man what
he has done wrong and what he will do. This again is much like how she would treat a child.
The other woman in the background is standing arms crossed looking down at the man. This
numerical advantage the women have further increases the feeling the women are in
authority.
This close up camera shot angled up at the woman gives the impression that the woman is
in a position of authority as well as highlighting her facial expression of dismay that the man
is not complying.
4. This shot shows the man getting increasingly frustrated at his lack of authority and power.
This is shown by the fact he is looking up at the woman in an angry way as well as his
aggressive hand gestures and facial expression.
