Question 2
1. With the two assassins this convention is met in the fact that they are both of the young age. I think
that this is a negative representation of young people in the fact that it shows that young people are
into crime. Both the assassins are Caucasian which fits the convention in an action/thriller. I think
that this is a negative representation of Caucasian people because it shows that only they are able to
do acts like the two assassins do. Both assassins are of an unspecified social class which doesn’t stick
to, or break any convention. This doesn’t affect the representation of young males. The gender of
the two assassins are both male. This fits the convention of an action thriller movie, but is a negative
representation of men in the fact that it shows that men do these horrible things to people. The two
assassins show that they have physical ability and do much more action then other characters in the
movie opening which keeps to convention. This is a positive representation of men because it shows
that people with physical ability can get things done.
This crime boss (Ms. Sorano) is supposed to be of middle aged which fits the convention in an
action/thriller film. I think that this is a negative representation of middle aged people, and the
amount of crime they get into. The ethnicity of the character Ms. Sorano is supposed to be Italian
which doesn’t break or stick to any convention. However, Ms. Sorano is a negative representation of
Italian people in this respect because her character shows her to be vengeful and into crime. In
terms of gender Ms. Sorano breaks convention because she is a woman as a mob boss. I think that
this is both a positive and negative representation of women because it shows that women can have
power, however Ms. Sorano is seen as a vengeful woman which is not a good representation of
women. In terms of physical ability Ms. Sorano doesn’t show any signs of doing any physical
activities at all, which doesn’t break convention in an action thriller film. I think this is a negative
representation of women because it shows that women are not able to do physical activity; however
I think that it also is a positive representation of women because she is doing all the thinking and is
the mastermind behind everything. Ms. Sorano’s character is calm and collected even when angry
which sticks to convention, this also shows how smart Ms. Sorano is and bolsters my point on her
being a positive representation of women because she uses her mind.
The victim in the movie opening (Emma) breaks convention with being younger than normal age by
being a teenager. I think that this is a negative representation of young people, because it shows
that they always get into trouble, however I also think that it is a good representation of young
people as she is facing the assassins coming after her. The character Emma is a female which sticks
2. to the convention in the action/thriller genre. I think that this is a negative representation of females
because it shows that females are damsels in distress. Emma’s ethnicity is Caucasian which doesn’t
stick to or break any conventions. I think though by having Emma as Caucasian is a bad
representation of Caucasians because they would be shown to be the victim in this case.
The Protector in the film opening is supposed to be of the young age which sticks to convention. I
think that this character is a good representation of young people because he is brave enough to
stand up to the people after the victim in the movie. The Mr. White is supposed to be Indian which
breaks convention in this case. I think that this is a good representation of Indian people because it
shows them to be a strong, kind people in this case. Mr. White is supposed to be someone with a
high physical ability, which sticks to convention. I think that this is a good representation of people
with physical ability because it shows that they can be kind people who want to help.
