3. Knocked up The movie Knocked Up starring Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl is a bricolage which means there are multiple genre’s, which is romantic comedy. The film opens with up beat music as the opening track, submerging from the universal studios logo to the rest of the footage. The first shot is an establishing shot which shows the house Seth and his buddies live in. A girl who is not yet introduced to the audience rings a bell and the guys start fighting with each other which indicates to us that they aren't as mature as they look and that they regularly participate in fighting in the back garden (by the bell being there) the group are all laughing , drinking beers and are smoking cannabis. They next appear to visit a theme park and have goes on different rollercoaster's for this movie.. The shot types are usually tracking shots and medium shots to show emotion and body language. They appear to wear casual clothes which are a T-Shirt and shorts which shows they aren't formal people.
5. Yes Man The film Yes Man is another bricolage which is Rom-Com . The film starts off with a song which submerges through studio logos and cuts to a shot of Jim Carey (our main character) Holding his mobile phone and viewing the number calling. He keeps refusing to pick up a phone call saying “no” to his mobile phone. He finally answers the phone by mistake and lies to his friend about his whereabouts. After little conversation Jim Carey stops speaking and lets his friend to start a conversation. He appears to be in a video store and is picking up movies which suggests to the viewer he was planning to have a quiet night in. After his friend see’s him in the video store, he encourages Carey to come and have some drinks, after producing bad excuses Jim Carey goes to have drinks, where he runs in to his ex wife . The shot types ranged between long shots mostly when there was some movement and close ups, when Jim Carey was expressing him self and speaking to others. Just by this opening you can tell jim carey is not an out going person and we yet have to see how he handles diffrent situations
7. Jackie Brown Jackie Brown starts off with the main character (Jackie) walking through the airport this shot is a tracking close up which after a while turns to tracking mid shot. She is portrayed as a stern air hostess who is very professional and knows how to keep her cool. She is shown as an independent woman who is walking with a strong stride on her own. She walks around metal detectors and x ray machines in the air port which shows us the airport has trust in her. She is wearing a standard low budget airlines uniform and her facial expression always stays mood less while walking up to her desk and when she arrives just before her desk opens to let people in the airplane, she changes her mood instantly from tired to smiley and happy. It then cuts to the next scene which shows a Samuel l Jackson to be watching a show “ chicks with guns”. Samuel L Jackson describes these guns to his friend Robert Deniro in very close detail while sitting down drinking liquor in the day time. There is also another character in the opening but is not as important so only shows body parts such as her back and her feet.
9. The Shining The film “The Shining” is a mix between horror and thriller. The film starts with a helicopter shot following a small car driving through big mountains which emphasises the isolation. After tracking for a while the shot goes to the car arriving at the hotel which he is applying for a job at. He is sent in by the secretary and meets a happy boss who is smiling and well mannered. He greets jack (the main character) after a talk about work the manager tells jack about the isolation he will receive from the outside world and tells him a story about how the isolation turned a person ,who was working in the same position as he applied for, crazy. Jack turns down the advice and tells the new manager there is nothing more he would like then isolation. These shots while speaking were mainly mid shots and shot reverse shots to give the audience feeling of a conversation . All the time while viewing this the audience notices jack is very relaxed, even when the manager forebodes the future happenings. The other characters are his wife and his child danny. Danny is the second main character and has the ghost who killed him self and the family in him while his mother and father think its just an imaginary friend.
11. Shawshank Redemption The film shawshank redemption starts as a black screen with the credits of stars and staff which then fades to a long shot of two lights at the beginning of the drive and a building with lights in the background . The camera then tracks to the car which is not lit apart from the dashboard lights which shows the driver in the seat. The camera tracks and pans to show our main character sitting in the pick ups driving seat looking rough, he leans over and reaches to the glove compartment. Camera follows something covered in rags, he unwraps this to reveal a gun and some bullets. He then reaches for a bottle of liquor which then the camera goes to a mid shot of him drinking away his sorrows. The next scene is in court where our main character Andy(our main character) is being charged with murder, the sound at the back is one with a piano playing slowly , there different questions and answers given with a shot reverse shot to give the viewer a feeling of the interrogation. The audience are then shown flashbacks in-between being asked questions at the court and shows what actually happened at the murder he was accused of. The shot then goes to medium and more question and answers, the flash back shows Andy heavily drinking and loading up a revolver he opens his door and the sound from the courtroom over shadows the video of Andy opening his car door. A close up of his foot emerging from the car along with glass bottles which indirectly shows the viewers Andy has been drinking heavily then a full shot of Andy walking unsteadily towards the gate which then goes to a medium shot of Andy, then it cuts back to the court room then to the two lovers and the courtroom sound track still plays over the scenes until finally it cuts to the sentencing in court, a close up shot of the judge shows the sentence then a cut to a zooming shot of Andy then cuts to a black screen and a sound of a door slamming indicating that he will be behind doors for a long time. The suspense of the opening is great for the viewers and the cutting between court and actual events are cleverly done to give the audience a feel of suspense .
13. Menace II Society The genre in menace to society is Crime Drama. The opening scene starts and you can hear two males conversating Cut to a shot of two black males talking and laughing, the camera then tracks to the left and you see a korean shopkeeper keeping an eye on them acting like she's dusting bottles. The younger male confronts her and then a medium shot reverse shot to show expression on shopkeepers face when confronted. The camera continues to shot reverse shot while they choose their beers, the shopkeeper is scared and prejudicial about the pair. The pair choose there beer crack it open and turn around to walk to the cash register when Cut to a pan to the right and the cashier confronts the pair about drinking beer before paying for it, the cashiers voice sounds shaky as if he is scared by the pair. Pan to the left shows the boys getting agitated and answering the cashier, cut to the other shop keeper who starts to follow them from behind, the younger male again confronts her and they have another shot reverse shot conversation. The camera then tracks them from behind as they walk to the cash register and talk to the cashier. A shot of the front of the boys then a shot reverse shop of the shopkeeper and young male giving each other looks, cut to cashier who looks scared and takes the money, another small track as the younger male comes closer to the cashier and asks a question, cashier starts to open register cuts to a mid shot of the cashier gives the money over and tells the boys to leave the shop, after exchanging words in a shot reverse shot the cashier insults the boy, cut to a mid shot behind the young boy which zooms in to him and asks a question obviously agitated cut to the cashier as he tries to diffuse the situation cut to over the shoulder long shot from the other shopkeeper shows the young man walk up to the counter cut to the other young man drinking his beer , gun shots go off and the man drops his beer. Cut to mid shot from behind the other young man with a gun as he shoots it behind the counter. Hysterical the other shop keeper is screaming while the camera is still behind the young man and then he grabs her cut to a shot of the young man who dropped the beer looking shocked at the dead cashier shot reverse shot of dead cashier and young mans reaction cut to young man with gun carrying other shopkeeper to the back to get the evidence cut back to young male shouting at other male. Shot of door to the back room and you can hear gun shots going off in the back and the shopkeeper stops screaming cut back to the young male who is hysterical and is shouting, cut to the young male with the gun who rushes out the back room to the cash with a tracking shot. Mid shot of dead cashier and young male who killed him stepping around him, the camera follows him to the till where he opens it to find nothing, camera follows him again to where he checks cashiers pockets and finds a wad of money shot reverse shot of other young male shouting hurry up, and back to the young male counting money cuts to the young man running out, then other young man follows , the camera only follows them to the door and lets the audience imagine their escape the main character starts narrating the situation.
