1. The mise en scene is this screen grab, uses the prop of the jam as a
sweetener to try and help the women. This presents black people as
sensitive and helpful to others which subverts some of their
stereotypes such as they are inferior and demonising in their gangs but
in this case, he was just being helpful. Although the group of people in
the room as all seen as lower than other people by the inspectors as
they are immigrants. But all the workers are trying to help them by
hiding them away so in the hotel itself they are seen as equals.
The camera work in this screen grab is a close up shot of the women’s face
and the man’s hands. This shot is from another person’s perspective that is
present in the room. We can see that the male actor is married as we see his
wedding ring, showing that he can commit. This subverts the stereotype
that black people are all slaves and all in poverty which he clearly isn’t. This
makes us feel that we have perceived the ethnic group of black people as
wrong.
The sound in this screen grab presents us with the dialogue of the black
male taking control of the situation whilst everyone else is panicking. It is
clear that he is feeling concerned for the woman’s welfare and so is
everyone else in the room. This shows different ethnic groups working
together which subverts many stereotypes of them all keeping to
themselves as they are trying to protect each other. Also the dialogue of
when he says he was a doctor before he worked at the hotel shows that he
is most definitely not inferior, and challenges the stereotypes of black
people being lower class.
The editing in this screen grab shows dark lighting in the
background. This emphasises the difference in the colour of
skin of the two people. The room is also dark, this could
symbolise the dim and negative mood of the people in the
room. Black also symbolises death, which they could be
panicked that she has died. The black man who is helping
gets the majority of the screen time showing his
importance, the pace is also fast at this point as the
characters have all run into this room to hide. In this section
the zoom effect is used as part of the editing to show us the
man gently rubbing jam inside her mouth. This shows
importance of the scene as he knew what to do and
challenges the stereotype that white people are the
‘professionals’. This makes us feel stupid as we assumed
that he would be incapable of helping in this scene but he
did and proved us wrong.
2. Mise en scene
Costumes- subverting the
stereotype of a black
African of being poor and
not be able to afford a
suit. He looks well
presented and smart. Also
he looks just as well
dressed as the white man.
His body language is
polite which again
subverts from the
stereotype.
Camera:
It is a long shot which helps us to relate the
characters to the environment. This subverts the
black African stereotype as he is working in a posh
hotel whereas the stereotypes suggest that black
Africans would be doing manual labour and are in
poverty.
Editing:
Fast pace as the immigration officers have come into the hotel. The
fast pace reflects on the panic that immigrants face when issues like
this come about. We can see how the two men act – the white man
seems in a more relaxed positon whereas the black man looks on
edge. As a black man he has to do more to prove his politeness by
sitting up properly and not slouching.
3. The mise en scene is this clip shows a black African woman in
cleaning uniform as a worker at the hotel. This screen grab
conforms to the stereotype of black people being lower class as
she is working for white people who have the stereotype of being
rich and superior. The female actor’s body language is negative as
she is looking at the floor not valuing herself that highly. This
makes us look down on her as she is not standing up for herself,
so we too look at her as inferior.
The editing in this section consists of reverse shots of the immigrant’s
faces, and the black Asian women who are clearing out Ibrahim’s locker.
These shots are medium takes and use the technique of transitions
called wipe as the shots do not dissolve or fade into each other. This
again makes us feel empathy for the different ethnic groups who are
under threat for being immigrants, as they are not causing any harm
they are just at work. This shows the white men who took Ibrahim as
nasty and cruel.
This screen grab is taken just after Ibrahim is taken; the female in the
shot is clearly upset just like everyone else who had just witnessed the
immigration officers taking their friend. There is no dialogue in this
section but there is music that is slow and of a minor key which
portrays sadness and negativity. This makes us feel sorry for the
characters whose friend had just been taken as they lost him, also
because they know that on the next search it could be them who get
taken.
The camera work in this screen grab is parallel to the black
African females face; it is also a medium shot with her face in
the left side of frame. This presents ethnicity of black people as
slaves for others as she is a cleaner at the hotel; this therefore
conforms to the stereotype.
4. Mise en scene
All wearing suits or blazers to show that
they are professional and work hard which
is a stereotype of white people. It would
usually be richer people who would wear
suits therefore due to their ethnicity this
conforms to the stereotype.
Camera:
Mid shot to show facial expressions and body language. It
enables the audience to be more familiar. We can see that
the two men in the background are similar to bodyguards
from their body language showing that white people have
more authority conforming to stereotypes.
Editing:
Slow paced editing - to build up the
tension. This emphasises the white man’s
power and importance as he enters the
establishment.
5. Mise en scene:
Police uniform – white man shows authority and status in society. Shows that
he has more power over the ethnic minority.
Red – danger that the immigrant is caught up in and what he is about to face.
Camera:
Mid shot – shows body language. The police officer
is handling the immigrant and restraining him. The
immigrant is defenceless suggesting that he knows
that white people have the power in this situation
and doesn’t want to fight back. This subverts the
stereotype of black people being gang members and
violent.
Editing:
Fast pace –
chaotic life of an
immigrant.
