History of music
1. History of the Music Video
By Will Rathlou and Rebecca Gibson
2. • The two music videos we have analysed and
compared are “Hanging on the Telephone” by
Blondie, and “Stay Awake” by Julia Nunes.
3. Representation of Artist
• Blondie was shown as being “cool” and stylish.
They were portrayed as being a stereotypical
80s rock star band.
• Julia Nunes was shown in a working
environment, which shows her as being an
average person rather than a rock star at all.
4. Technical development
• The both music videos are edited smoothly.
They both use only cuts, rather than other
transitions.
• Both use a variety of camera angles.
• The overall quality of Stay Awake was better
than Hanging on the Telephone, in terms of
video and audio. Blondie’s video was more
edited to look rouge and like a home video.
5. What attributes are foregrounded?
• The style and behavior of Blondie in the music
video is used to promote them as a band.
• For Julia Nune’s video, foregrounded
attributes are mainly the music itself,
particularly the lyrics. Another foregrounded
attribute of the music video is that it connects
with the audience. This is because the video is
set in a working environment.
6. Video comparison
• In themusic video ‘Hanging on the Telephone’
has a gloomier mood than ‘Stay Awake’.
• Stay Awake tells a story, whereas Hanging on
the Telephone doesn’t.
