2. Genre Characteristics.
Gold digger- Kanye west.
• This video is not really a mainstream Rap Genre video. Because its quite upbeat, very colorful, and doesn’t necessarily tell a story from the
artist personal life.
The performance is set in one location and is all done standing in front of a green screen.
It follows a traditional ‘dance routine’ in the way of that there are the simple arm movements the artist does, which help to convey the lyrics of the
song. He is stationary for most of he video. This is typical of the rap genre to ‘dance’ in this way.
There is a narrative in the story. It talks about how a woman was only with a man for his money, hence the title ‘Gold digger’.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
• This video is more of a mainstream rap video because it has a dark setting, it has a more mellow tempo and does tell a story of personal
events.
The performance of this video is also set in one location. They are being filmed whilst performing live on a stage.
This video follows a slightly different ‘dance routine’ to other mainstream videos, because they are moving round the stage a lot to try and get the
audience more involved.
This video does have a narrative because it talks about a journey the 2 artists take on a trip to paris.
3. Visuals/ Lyrics
Kanye west.
• The lyrics talk about kanye’s girlfriend, but yet you
never see his girlfriend in the video.
The lyrics are mostly amplified but not literally
illustrated. For example he talks about gold, yet
there is no gold illustrated in the video.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
4. Visuals/ music
Kanye West and Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
• There is a change in the beat of the song which is then
echoed by the editing.
The editing is on the beat of the music, which makes it
more desirable for the viewer to watch.
There is not a change in the location of the music video,
so they ant get a full effect of editing the change of
location, with the music.
5. Need to sell artist.
Kanye west.
• In this video there is a lot of costume changes, close
ups, central framing and selling of he artists image.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
• In this video there is no changes in costume as they
are performing on a stage as a live act. They do have
a lot of close ups to help illustrate the impact of the
song. It also kid of sells Kanye as a new image,
because he used to be really lairy and upfront but he
seems to have calmed down in this video.
6. Intertextality.
Kanye west.
• This video has some intertextuality as it is quite
similar to the video that T-pain produced in 2009.
They also reference other rappers in their song,
so this is a reference to fame.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
• This song does not really have any intertextuality
as it was a first in the way they edited it.
7. Voyeurism.
Kanye west.
• This video has a lot of voyeurism in it, because they
are looking at the women in bikinis as objects and it
also makes the viewer feel attracted to them.
Jay-Z & Kanye West – In Paris
• This video has no voyeurism in it apart from that
women watching it could feel attracted to the rappers
and male viewers wish that they could be them.
