1. Evaluation 1
In what ways do your media
products use, develop or
challenge the forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. Conventions
The form of the media product is a video which accompanies a music track in order to promote it and its performer.
Conventions are the usual contents of a media text which are expected by the audience.
We used conventions that already exist in pop music videos so the audience will know exactly what to expect.
• Conventions of music video Andrew Goodwin:
• He recognised a number of key features which distinguish the music video:
• Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics
• Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics
• There is a relationship between music and visuals
• Record companies demand a lot of close-ups of the main artist or vocalist
• There is often intersexual reference e.g. to films, TV programmes.
The digipak convention I've included to make my digipak realistic and professional, I have been researching at some existing digipaks for
the conventions that are included in digipaks, for example: they mostly a main image, the bands name, track lists. All majority of digipaks
are created for special or limited edition disks and DVDs of gigs/concerts. A digipak included a CD and a DVD.
All digipaks include the following information:
•Visual image/key to the production
•Band/artist name - allow audience to identify band/artist
•Album title - on main cover and along the spine
•Track list/What's on the DVD
•Basic background information of the band/artist
•Occasions that do reviews from companies e.g. NME, News Of The World etc.
3. Did you challenge form or conventions?
The performance bit of our music video we challenge ourselves because we used the
green screen which is new in our media department. So we was one of the first ones
to use it and so we challenge ourselves with a range of different colourful moving
backgrounds e.g. kaleidoscopes which has a 60s theme to link well with the song.
Green screen was hard to get going at first but once I got it the first time it got
easier.
Did I try to be different in order to surprise, shock or provide
extra entertainment for your audience?
I tried to be different in order to provide extra entertainment as in the clips we
filmed we used humour as well as showing different relationships between a group
of people. As to interpret the song lyrics it tells us a relationship between two girls
and a boy and one of the girls is telling the boy that the other girl is in love with you.
So with our creative minds we tried to show that to the audience with friendship as
well so we used different people for a range of effects and having fun days out with
each other. This another convention that is a narrative side as well as performance
based.
4. Representation
For pop music videos they have different stereotypies for
what you should witness in a pop video.
Our song is up beat so we used colourful kaleidoscope
backgrounds, the clips we used there are people smiling
and having a good time.
We have been conventional with the technical aspects in
my work.
Main camera shots we used were:
• Close ups of the main singer
• Handheld shots to show a scrapbook/ memory feel
• Mid shot of the performance
Technical terms:
• Fast pace
• Mainly straight cuts Pop music videos:
• Bright lights and colours • Women: Short cloths (skirts, low cut tops)
• Editing to reflect the pace of music or lyrics • Luxury life style
• Special effects • urban locations
• High and low angle shots • Clubs, party's and dancing
• Crowd shots
• Whole band shot
• Showing a ‘Pop Style’ life
• Mise-en-scene reflects atmosphere • Group singing in the chorus
5. In conclusion, I use the format of the conventions
through our music video and used the mainstream
music as we know a lot about and listen to it.
Throughout this project this has helped me
develop a professional music video and the
products that come with releasing music. Made
me release that there are many different aspects
that come with a music video and how to promote
it to the audience which is hard work. Altogether
it helped me produce some thing creative which
I'm really happy with.
