Reduplicating Research Paper
Reduplicative set seems common when an infant starts learning a language. For most people, the
first words that they learned are "mama" and "papa". It is also a language development process for
young children. They use reduplicative sets frequently in order to enable the child to produce
polysyllabic utterances without articulating complex structures. Ingram argues that children produce
those reduplicative sounds to compensate their inability to produce the whole word. So that when
they develop the sophisticated sounding techniques, they would use "mommy" and "daddy" instead
of "mama" and "papa". Another type of reduplicative set appears when we want to emphasize
something. Adding a repetitive part can make the word stronger. For example,

The Role of Religion and Morality in Cat's Cradle Essay
The Role of Religion and Morality in Cat's Cradle As an author, Kurt Vonnegut has received just
about every kind of praise an author can receive: his works held the same sway over American
philosophy as did those of Jack Kerouac or J.R.R. Tolkein; his writing has received acclaim from
academics and the masses alike; and three of his books have been made into feature films. Society
has permanently and noticeably been altered by his writing. Through accessible language and
easily–understood themes, Vonnegut has created works subtle, engrossing, and familiar. His main
method for doing this is by exploiting a theme with which everyone is familiar and about which
everyone has his own opinion: religion. Not many people are more ... Show more content on

His works are significantly influenced by that genre, but contain strikingly relevant commentaries
about contemporary American society which set him apart from other science–fiction writers. His
use of science fiction draws a humorous contrast between the all–important significance of the
nature of the universe and of reality, and the insignificance of human life and society. All of his
works emphasize the enormous forces acting on his characters, not the least of which is fate. As his
writing progressed and matured, this stylistic nuance became more and more evident. In his book
Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut describes his own style by means of Tralfamadorians, an alien race
for whom time is nonexistent, and whose literature reflects this: Each clump of symbols is a brief,
urgent message describing a situation, a scene. We Tralfamadorians read them all at once, not one
after the oth– er. There isn't any particular relationship between all the messages ex– cept that the
author has chosen them carefully, so that, when seen all at once, they produce an image of life that is
beautiful and surprising and deep. There is no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral,
no causes, no effects. What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen
all at one time (88). Indeed, Vonnegut has dismissed temporal continuity in his writing, and has thus

Religion and Schools Essay
Many of our state and federal laws are based upon Christian religious rhetoric that remain on the
books, if not, always enforced. These laws that shape how our country and schools operate, even
define how educators are supposed to behave. Freedom of religion, a mandate of the U.S.
Constitution, yet, religion has found its way into our laws and classrooms. A clearly defined part of
the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics states the following, "Standard 3: Unlawful Acts: an educator
should abide by federal, state, and local laws and statutes." However, many of the laws that are on
the books about moral and ethical behavior were created utilizing religious scripture and designed to
foster a Christian way of life. Thomas Jefferson, an advocate of ... Show more content on

The state of Alabama still has many laws on the books that make it unlawful to be a homosexual.
Does this mean that a gay or lesbian teacher is in violation of the law and they are morally unfit to
teach?
Right and wrong behavior is not black nor white. There are shades of grey that make behavior
subjective and not necessarily equivocal to law–breaking behavior. It is important to note, that being
an educator does come with certain responsibilities to be "moral compasses," but who deems what is
moral. In an increasingly technologically monitored world in which people can take pictures, record
videos and alter images to suit their needs or biases, anyone can fall victim to unethical behavior at
the hands of an angry, manipulative community member. Furthermore, are current laws and
standards for educators fair or simply egregious?
Matters of faith should remain for those teaching Sunday school and not for our public school
teachers whose job it is to mold the intellectual component of a student's mind. Despite David
Purple's stance that there should be a "commitment to nourishing the power of love" in our
classrooms, it is neither the job nor responsibility of a school or teacher to foster religious or
spiritual growth. One can hope that a student will develop a keen intellect to pursue this growth on
their own utilizing the analytical skills and compassionate learning they gained in the classroom.

Ms. Bandura Observing The Classroom
The teacher I observe, Ms. Bandura, at B.V.M Visitation School, plans her classroom activies
following a specific schedule. Ms. Bandura discussed her planning for Thursdays, the day I observe
her, with me last week during my field experience. She takes the kids on a bathroom break right
before snack time every day. She plans a journal entry, a religion lesson, and a cursive lesson before
the bathroom break. After bathroom break, the children have snack time which is essentially a 15
minute recesses. After this, she does math and spelling with the children before they go to violin
lessons. They go to violin lessons in two groups, for an hour total. While one group is in violin, the

Distributed practice is when the practice is spread out over time. Ms. Bandura follows the ideals of
distributed practice because each day she plans to teach each subject for a short amount of time,
rather than taking large chunks of time each day to "mass practice" a subject's material. Also, we
discussed what teachers should do before, during, and after teaching. Ms. Bandura's Sunday nights
remind me of this. In class we said how before teaching, teachers should think about student's prior
knowledge, possible instructional methods, and planning time. Ms. Bandura certainly does this
before she begins teaching. Also, we suggested that teachers should make sure the students are
interacting, engaged, and understanding the lesson. As I mentioned, Ms. Bandura researches ways to
keep the students engaged and interacted in the lesson, given the limited resources she has access to.
Something she does often, while teaching, is say the words "Hocus Pocus". When she says this, the
students respond, "everybody focus!" This is just a silly, but effective, rhyme she uses to make sure
the students are paying attention and focusing. In addition, when Ms. Bandura writes out her lesson
plans, she prepares questions to ask the students at the end of each of her lessons to make sure they
know what they have just been taught. With doing this, she can make sure the students are
understanding the new knowledge. When we discussed what teachers

Max, his sister and his friend Allison go through to save their town and destroy the witches that Max
has unleashed by lighting an enchanted candle. On the way they meet many new friends that help
them along the way. This movie is all about suspense, action and adrenaline. The music is all about
that too. In this movie music is used to create a variety of emotions throughout the movie. Some of
the instruments John Debney (the composer) uses to create these brisk and intriguing sounds are
violins, drums for the loud and fast tempo and trumpets and flutes to add in a lighter and
mischievous touch. An example of a scene in the movie where it has this touch is when the boy Max

Essay on Wicca: A Religion or Just Hocus Pocus?
How Is Wicca a religion and not all just Hocus Pocus? Although some refuse to acknowledge that
Wicca is a religion, it is one because it meets what we generally accept to be the major
characteristics of a religion. There are groups of people who believe it is a religion, there are those
who do not.
Wicca is thought to be from the old English Wicca meaning Wise One. The definition meaning a
"religion influenced by pre–Christian beliefs and practices of western Europe that supports the

The Movie Hocus Pocus Was Directed By Kenny Ortega And The...
In the late 1940's a man named Joseph Campbell shared his Mythic principal with the world. He
explains that there is a three–stage formula that he calls a Hero Journey which is the structure of
every story. Though most stories are completely different on the outside, the stories are almost
structured around these three stages. Stage 1 is the hero leaves the everyday world and enters
another world. While Stage 2 the hero is challenged by opposing forces and must pass a series a test
throughout the movie. That will then determine who will be victorious, either the hero or the
opposing forces. Stage 3 is tied into Stage 2 because if the hero is victorious, they will return to the
ordinary world with a gift for the world.
David Kirschner and Mick Garris fulfilled all the Hero's Journey steps. The movie Hocus Pocus was
directed by Kenny Ortega and is based on the Salem Witch trails back in Salem, Massachusetts in
the 1600's. On October 31, 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, Thackery Binx discovers his sister Emily
being spirited away to the Sanderson Sisters' cottage, a trio of witches. The sisters, Winifred, Sarah
and Mary, cast a spell on Emily to absorb her youth and regain their own, killing Emily. Binx
confronts them, but the witches transform him into an immortal black cat and to live with his guilt.

Fort Build Research Paper
How many times did it ring in your ears as a child?
"Sit still!"
It holds true through the generations. Wiggles and giggles accompany childhood. Seemingly bitten

So, other than wearing out parents witnessing all this wiggling, what is all the fuss about and focus
on, well, on focus? And, what role do forts play in developing this skill?
IS FOCUS JUST HOCUS POCUS?

Forts offer opportunities to engage kids in their passion and increase focus:

– The process of planning a fort design develops focus.
– Following fort plans keeps projects and kids' concentration on track.
– Working together in constructing helps children learn to work amid distractions.
– Fort building lends itself to be broken into smaller chunks as needed to hold attention.
– Pursuing a loved building project helps kids set goals and follow through on them.
– Passion engages kids even to the level of problem–solving which requires focusing skills.
Let your kids choose the fort design that fits their passion or whim of the day to keep them engaged
and developing focus skills. After all, don't we all focus and concentrate better when the matter at

Bartkowski (2014), discusses the understanding of the sacred and the religious identity as an
ethnographer. Being sacred is something that transcends time, inspires amazement, and can be
potentially dangerous, all things that Indiana is realizing over the course of the film. Bartkowski
feels that songs can be sacred as well. The song "In the Garden" has been performed by countless
entertainers and it provides hope for devout Christians as it provides explicitly religious verses and
symbols, (2014). He first heard this song at a funeral and as he heard it played, he felt the pain of
loss. This grief that is felt is a part of the sacred being potentially dangerous. More songs are

later are the basis of Christianity. Although the band itself is secular, and follow what the writer
describes as religious evanescence, it does invoke thoughts of sacredness. On the other side of the
coin, Bartkowski details religious evocation as something growing closer to things valued as holy.

DOCUMENT ANALYSIS – LUCRETIUS: EPICUREAN PHILOSPHY AT ROME
Within Lucretius' dialectic and poetic writings in Robert Latham's translation of Lucretius: On the
Nature of the Universe, three major topics are discussed: philosophy, religion, and science.
Lucretius was devoted to the works of his teacher and renowned philosopher Epicurus, praising him
as a prophetic or god–like figure. His poetic prose uses a host of concrete examples to show validity
in his beliefs. Lucretius effectively supports the Epicurean worldview that everything can be
explained by material forces. Memmius is the addressee of the poem, and Lucretius enlightens him
to the nature of happiness, how religion is based on superstition, and the idea of atoms composing
earthly matter. Evaluating reality gives mankind the natural answers to life's questions without
concerning themselves with gods, prophets, or beliefs, and this was Lucretius' main task in his work.
Lucretius was a Roman poet who believed that the Epicurean systems provided the most important
and valuable way of thinking. He pledged all of his poetic and persuasive writing skills towards
presenting Epicurus' teachings in a concise expose. A key Epicurean doctrine which he explores is
the concept of the Nature of Happiness. Philosophy, in this mindset, is a refuge from the trials and
tribulations of the

Prospero's Magic in The Tempest
In Shakespeare's The Tempest, Prospero's magic is the means that Prospero teaches his lessons to
the plays various characters. Whether or not those lessons were learned or not is irrelevant. The
main issue is that Prospero's character is indeed a complex one, and one that deserves much
attention. Two essays that look at the complexity of Prospero and his magic are Stephen Miko's
"Tempest," and Barbara Mowat's "Prospero, Agrippa, and Hocus Pocus." Both of these essays, in
dealing with Prospero and his magic reveal things about Prospero that only enhance the mystery of
his character.
Mowat's article deals more with the nature of Prospero's magic, and the type of character that it
makes him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is more to his character, however, as is seen by the other two positions offered by Mowat.
The second that she offers is that the magic that Prospero controls only allows him control of the
physical world. Since he cannot directly influence the thoughts and beliefs of others, he is limited to
mostly trickery, albeit impressive trickery. He has the power to conjure spirits, control the weather
and raise the dead, but for all this earthly power, he cannot change the basic tenets of men. He has to
use his powers to attempt to make the characters of the play change themselves. This sometimes
works, and sometimes does not. This interpretation of Prospero is in contrast with the last tenet.
Prospero appears at the beginning, according to his own words, to be only interested in gains beyond
the world, yet his magic is limited to only things in the world (assuming that spirits are also physical
in nature, and not outside the realm of reality.) This means that he is restricted to using earthly
means to attain a goal above earthly gains. He is a strangely hypocritical person here. He rejects the
world in pursuit of his studies, yet he is restricted by that same earthly limitation. This adds to the
dimension of his character. Perhaps he is not as simplistic as he seems. This allows him the
possibility of having conflicting goals within the play, as he seems to have.
Mowat's third tenet is what rounds out Prospero: the

Hocus Pocus debuted 24 years ago. It was a huge hit back then and still is today. Bette Midler,
Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker brought the Sanderson sisters to life. As a Halloween
classic, the movie is typically played on the Disney Channel at least once through the month of
October. Now, Hocus Pocus fans may get an even bigger treat than they ever anticipated. According
to TV Guide, the Disney Channel is busy working on a Hocus Pocus reboot that would be a made

A Critical Analysis Of 'Into The Woods'
Into the Woods is a famous musical. It premiered on Broadway in 1987 and has been performed
over 700 times before ending in 1989. The musical is a collection of fairytales from authors Jacob
and Wilhelm Grimm and Charles Perrault and put together in a story with music and lyrics written
by Stephen Sondheim and dialogue written by James Lapine. The musical incorporates characters
from fairytales such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel
and recreates their stories in one storyline. Into the Woods follows a baker and his wife who have a
desire to have children and start a family. They soon learn that their inability to have children is a
curse brought upon by a witch. Meanwhile, characters from different fairytales have other personal
goals they want to achieve as well. Through certain circumstances, each respective character gets
their wishes granted and lived happily ever after, only for consequences to occur afterwards. The
story is set in a setting similar to the Middle–Ages, with kingdoms, farmers and a world filled with
magic. The story is another fairytale that brings a number of fairytales together and brings in
different worlds to merge into one to tell one unique story. One of the main themes of Into the
Woods is the idea of having a happy ending. After the protagonists go through a tough journey, a sad
beginning to a strange experience, a happy ending is often the best result. After finding the answers

Essay On Hypnosis
The modern uses of hypnosis have stemmed from its historical uses found in the Greek
Civilizations. These cultures used hypnotic trance to heal traumas and to suppress the fears of their
civilians ("Hypnosis"). This specific form of psychological healing also occurred in Western Europe
by a man named Franz Anton Mesmer who used animal magnetism to heal psychosomatic illnesses
and trauma. The actual term hypnosis was not coined until much later by a Scottish physician, James
Braid, who derived the word from the Greek word hypnos meaning sleep ("Hypnosis"). In 1840 and

Through questioning of people in the Massachusetts Bay Colony to find out who the witches are in
the area, people under hypnosis were able to give examples of evidence that they saw without

the biased thought of the person being questioned. Because of these false claims, many people lost

Remember The Most Important Day Of The Day
It was a cold Friday morning in suburbia when Nancy had woken up to a loud drilling across the
street. There were children rushing to school with their bags weighing them down and parents on
their mobile phones trying to explain to their coworkers why they were running late. It looked like a
somewhat normal end to the week.
As Nancy pulled back the curtain, she saw a builder bent over drilling into the pavement with his
crack on show. She sighed and laid back down. It was only until Nancy looked towards the poster
across the room of the Hocus Pocus movie that it suddenly dawned on her. She smiled as she
remembered it was Halloween! How did she forget? How did she not remember the most important
day of the year? Jumping up with excitement Nancy head toward the cupboard next to the poster
where her wand was and chuckled "TODAY IS THE DAY!"
What was the day and what was going to happen? Nancy was known to be a grumpy thirty five year
old living in the suburbs of New York. She wasn't well known however she was known for her
inability to exchange pleasantries in the neighbourhood.
Nancy got downstairs and found a stack of things to do. She was a housewife. Her husband was a
corporate boss working in the city and she was the stay at home wife. This was by choice so she
could work her magic during the day and while he was asleep at night. Lately things seemed to be

"Hocus–Pocus Accounting" by Douglas R. Carmichael, Journal of Accountancy, October 1999; Vol.
188, Iss. 4; pg. 59, 5 pgs
Abstract:
SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt decried what he termed "accounting hocus–pocus" and called for
coordinated efforts to uncover it. He targeted the practice by some companies of improperly
boosting reported earnings by manipulating the recognition of revenue. Among the most common
methods of doing this are the bill–and–hold transaction and a long list of sham transaction involving
shipping, billing and/or related–party involvements. Both the SEC and the AICPA seek to increase
independent auditors ' awareness of problems associated with these practices. Full Text: | Copyright

The SEC has emphasized that the above is not a simple checklist. A transaction might meet all the
criteria and still fail the revenue–recognition guidelines. The following factors also must be
considered:
* The date the seller expects payment and whether the seller has modified its normal billing and
credit terms for the buyer.
* The seller 's past experiences with bill–and–hold transactions.
* Whether the buyer has the expected risk of loss in the goods ' market value.
* Whether the seller 's custodial risks are insurable and insured.
* Whether Accounting Principles Board Opinion no. 21, Interest on Receivables and Payables (on
discounting the related receivable), applies.
* Whether the business reasons for the transaction have introduced a contingency to the buyer 's
commitment.
A WELL–PREPARED AUDITOR
In planning the audit of all revenue transactions, the auditor must understand the client 's industry,
business and products as well as its procedures for accepting orders, shipping goods, billing and
recording sales and removing product from inventory. When a client engages in bill–– and–hold
transactions, he or she should determine whether the transactions comply with the SEC 's criteria.
Auditors need to consider many factors to assess the appropriateness of revenue recognition. For
example, in an SEC enforcement case, the seller was a toy maker with a highly seasonal

Compare And Contrast Comedy Movies Vs Horror Movies
LOL vs. AGGHHH
Out of the 326.1 million people in the United States, not everyone is going to enjoy the same things
(United States Census Bureau). When it comes to movies, not everyone is going to enjoy the same
genres; it has been statistically proven. Although it does not rank the highest on the charts, comedy
movies are much more enjoyable than horror movies for many reasons.
For instance, comedy movies are a lot more acceptable for children and families. A typical movie
night usually consists of family–oriented movies – depending on the family of course – and would
include movies such as Hocus Pocus, Moana, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Casper, among
many more (IMDb: Most Popular Family Featured Films). Isn't it obvious what all of these fantastic
movies have in common? They are all classified, in one way or another, as comedies. Being that
there are in fact a variety of family–comedy movies to provide a good laugh, many may want to
consider buying that popcorn and visiting the nearest movie store.
As most people would agree upon, horror movies are usually intended for mature audiences only
(ages 16+). Presumably, a young child shouldn't be exposed to violence, gore, and other
inappropriate scare factors. This is one reason movies are rated for specific audiences. For example,
a person must be over the age of 18, or have a parent accompany them if they are under the age of
18, in order to watch an R–rated movie (AMC Age Policy). R–rated movies contain such

Research Paper On Halloween In Honduras
This song plays continually in my head as Halloween approaches. What is supposed to be a day of
fun and mischievous, my house turns into a nasty battleground between my religious mother and I.
Every year is the same story; mother telling the kids not to give in to the hype and avoid trick or

"We are Christians and we do not celebrate the death, evil spirits, witches, or the devil!" to take part

there is no such celebration for Halloween. My sisters and I attempted to create our own costumes a

is the Wiccan practice, a pagan celebration. Add the urban myths about candy filled with glass,
apples injected with poison, and you have the perfect recipe to keep your kids scarred for life.
A few churches have agreed to celebrate Halloween to attract more people. Is it ok for Christians to
celebrate? I don't have any answers. Take Christmas for example, which is supposed to celebrate
Jesus birth, even though he wasn't born on December 25th. Christmas like Halloween is a pagan

The Witch And Witchcraft
For many centuries, witches have been around. The meaning of the word witch has changed over
time. Before, it was a gender–neutral term but it is now associated with women. There are different
types of witches and they each had different powers. The word witch came from the word Wicca
which is an old English word and slowly, it was changed to wicked by the Catholic Church. For as
long as it was around, witches and witchcraft were looked at negatively and those who practiced
witchcraft were poorly treated. Despite the time difference and geographical areas, there were
similarities in how women, witches, and those who were accused were treated. Treatment towards
witches was influenced by oral stories, experiences, and pop culture.
The word "Wicca" means wisdom. The witches were turned to when one needed help. Witches of
different types used spells, magic, and potions. Many had feared witches, especially the Catholic
church. Slowly the meaning was changed to wicked. Some types of witches included witch doctors,
Halloween witch, seductress or sire, Wiccan, voodoo witch, satanist, and many more. A witch doctor
and voodoo witch are someone who uses power to heal and protect against other's magic. A
Halloween witch is is a stereotypical witch that is portrayed as the complete opposite of what a
woman should be, and is represented as an ugly, old, evil, hag. A seducing woman who uses her
looks as a mean to lure one in is a seductress or sire. A Wiccan is one who practices the old religion
and believes in the power of the Earth. One who worships the Devil is a satanist. Harmless or not,
witches and those accused of witches were poorly treated. In different places, treatment was similar.
Treatment included beatings, imprisonment, and death. Many were accused, outed, interrogated,
shamed, arrested, tortured, segregated, or killed. Anyone and everyone could be accused but the
major targets were women, widows, the poor, the elderly, those who used herbal remedies, and those
with knowledge in medicine and astrology.
In Africa, specifically Northern Ghana, women were terrorized when accused of witchcraft
("Witches In Exile"). Women who were accused were cast from their family, sent to witch camps,

The Roaring Twenties: Background Of The 1920's
The Roaring Twenties was a time of jazz, dance, liquor, and crime. The broadway musical Chicago
was originated on a fictional background of the 1920s, including actual reports on various female

Dallas Watkins, a reporter and playwright. In 1924, Maurine was assigned a case on the accused
murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. During the twenties, the city
spurred for news on Chicago's finest female manslaughters. Thus began the blueprint for the

Syntax In Take A Stand By Jorge Ramos
According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, a rebel is "a person who rises in opposition or
armed resistance against an established government or ruler," (New Oxford American Dictionary,
"rebel"). However, a rebel does not have to rise up against an oppressing government or ruler in
order to be considered one, and instead can stand up against "...a tradition, a myth, an injustice, or
even...[an] idea," (Ramos 277). In the book Take a Stand, renowned journalist Jorge Ramos
emphasizes this point by providing vivid, realistic, and emotional imagery that contributes to the
diction that allows the images to convey the meaning of what true rebellion is. To add, Ramos

There is an abundance of syntax throughout the novel, and it is best used when accompanied by
another literary element. To add, the syntax would usually come in the form of a rhetorical device or
emphasized through the use of a parenthetical phrase. One such instance was when Ramos was
discussing the injustices of racism with Spike Lee. In the interview, Ramos asked about the
possibility of a post–racial society, as to which Lee skeptically and critically responded that as of
right now, a post–racial world isn't in effect and that there were "a lot of people who [mistakenly]
believed that when [President Obama] put his hand on Abraham Lincoln's Bible and did the oath,
that hocus–pocus, abracadabra, poof, we were in a post–racial world,"(227). Although the sentence
is somewhat dominated by diction, the syntax that is used to list out "hocus–pocus", "abracadabra",
and "poof" adds emphasis to the sarcastic tone that Lee is conveying throughout the passage, as well
as highlight how the world is still in need of a change for the betterment of society. Overall, the
syntax in the novel is able to tie all of the literary elements together to create a story that captivates

Kurt Vonnegut Analysis
The attempts by scholars to define Vonnegut's style of writing lean toward the belief that his work
may be modern, postmodern and postmodern humanist (Davis). Accordingly, following the
postmodern lean, Davis describes Vonnegut's fiction as "lies that enable a humanism of practice."
(Davis). Decidedly anti–war, Vonnegut refused to glorify his most hurtful memories of World War
II. His writings took on a common thread of sharp wit and satire. Hilariously, he made fun of his
world and attempted to teach a lesson regarding society's quirks and highlight what he thought about
society. Born November 11, 1922 and raised by wealthy Germans in Indianapolis, Kurt Vonnegut,
Jr's family abandoned their German culture to prove their patriotism ... Show more content on

After his release, Kurt received the Purple Heart award for what he referred to as "frost bite".

Unfortunately, Dresden, well into German territory, built no bomb shelters for its citizens, let alone
prisoners of war. As such, soon after Kurt found himself a POW, the Allied troops started bomb runs
on the City. Vonnegut fictionalized his experience in his 1969 work, Slaughterhouse–Five. Being a
pacifist, the number of pro–war movies spurred Vonnegut to write about his experiences in Dresden
in a way that could not be construed to support war. This fictional work, heralded as one of his best
books, has frequently been banned from schools for being unpatriotic.
In Kurt Vonnegut and the American Novel, Tally struggles to define Kurt's work as acclaimed
postmodern revolutionary or marginal science fiction. Tally continues to describe "Vonnegut is a
modern author tackling postmodern issues". Vonnegut's lessons in morality in "Cat's Cradle" push
the idea that big government is bad and please, add salt. These ideas are carried throughout history
in movies and literature. For example, Demolition Man (Stallone 1993) and Animal Farm (Orwell
1945) both deal with the notion that too much government can be a bad thing for society. The

Reduplicating Research Paper

  • 1. Reduplicating Research Paper Reduplicative set seems common when an infant starts learning a language. For most people, the first words that they learned are "mama" and "papa". It is also a language development process for young children. They use reduplicative sets frequently in order to enable the child to produce polysyllabic utterances without articulating complex structures. Ingram argues that children produce those reduplicative sounds to compensate their inability to produce the whole word. So that when they develop the sophisticated sounding techniques, they would use "mommy" and "daddy" instead of "mama" and "papa". Another type of reduplicative set appears when we want to emphasize something. Adding a repetitive part can make the word stronger. For example, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Role of Religion and Morality in Cat's Cradle Essay The Role of Religion and Morality in Cat's Cradle As an author, Kurt Vonnegut has received just about every kind of praise an author can receive: his works held the same sway over American philosophy as did those of Jack Kerouac or J.R.R. Tolkein; his writing has received acclaim from academics and the masses alike; and three of his books have been made into feature films. Society has permanently and noticeably been altered by his writing. Through accessible language and easily–understood themes, Vonnegut has created works subtle, engrossing, and familiar. His main method for doing this is by exploiting a theme with which everyone is familiar and about which everyone has his own opinion: religion. Not many people are more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His works are significantly influenced by that genre, but contain strikingly relevant commentaries about contemporary American society which set him apart from other science–fiction writers. His use of science fiction draws a humorous contrast between the all–important significance of the nature of the universe and of reality, and the insignificance of human life and society. All of his works emphasize the enormous forces acting on his characters, not the least of which is fate. As his writing progressed and matured, this stylistic nuance became more and more evident. In his book Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut describes his own style by means of Tralfamadorians, an alien race for whom time is nonexistent, and whose literature reflects this: Each clump of symbols is a brief, urgent message describing a situation, a scene. We Tralfamadorians read them all at once, not one after the oth– er. There isn't any particular relationship between all the messages ex– cept that the author has chosen them carefully, so that, when seen all at once, they produce an image of life that is beautiful and surprising and deep. There is no beginning, no middle, no end, no suspense, no moral, no causes, no effects. What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time (88). Indeed, Vonnegut has dismissed temporal continuity in his writing, and has thus eliminated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Now lily and ivy doesn't like telling scary stories because they don't believe and neither does meme. They all think thats its a bunch of hocus pocus and it's all just a myth. Well Lira and briana believed in everything they heard that was a "myth". lira and briana started to tell the story of HIM. • 21. Religion and Schools Essay Many of our state and federal laws are based upon Christian religious rhetoric that remain on the books, if not, always enforced. These laws that shape how our country and schools operate, even define how educators are supposed to behave. Freedom of religion, a mandate of the U.S. Constitution, yet, religion has found its way into our laws and classrooms. A clearly defined part of the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics states the following, "Standard 3: Unlawful Acts: an educator should abide by federal, state, and local laws and statutes." However, many of the laws that are on the books about moral and ethical behavior were created utilizing religious scripture and designed to foster a Christian way of life. Thomas Jefferson, an advocate of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The state of Alabama still has many laws on the books that make it unlawful to be a homosexual. Does this mean that a gay or lesbian teacher is in violation of the law and they are morally unfit to teach? Right and wrong behavior is not black nor white. There are shades of grey that make behavior subjective and not necessarily equivocal to law–breaking behavior. It is important to note, that being an educator does come with certain responsibilities to be "moral compasses," but who deems what is moral. In an increasingly technologically monitored world in which people can take pictures, record videos and alter images to suit their needs or biases, anyone can fall victim to unethical behavior at the hands of an angry, manipulative community member. Furthermore, are current laws and standards for educators fair or simply egregious? Matters of faith should remain for those teaching Sunday school and not for our public school teachers whose job it is to mold the intellectual component of a student's mind. Despite David Purple's stance that there should be a "commitment to nourishing the power of love" in our classrooms, it is neither the job nor responsibility of a school or teacher to foster religious or spiritual growth. One can hope that a student will develop a keen intellect to pursue this growth on their own utilizing the analytical skills and compassionate learning they gained in the classroom. Ms. Bandura discussed her planning for Thursdays, the day I observe her, with me last week during my field experience. She takes the kids on a bathroom break right before snack time every day. She plans a journal entry, a religion lesson, and a cursive lesson before the bathroom break. After bathroom break, the children have snack time which is essentially a 15 minute recesses. After this, she does math and spelling with the children before they go to violin lessons. They go to violin lessons in two groups, for an hour total. Distributed practice is when the practice is spread out over time. Ms. Bandura follows the ideals of distributed practice because each day she plans to teach each subject for a short amount of time, rather than taking large chunks of time each day to "mass practice" a subject's material. Also, we discussed what teachers should do before, during, and after teaching. Ms. Bandura's Sunday nights remind me of this. In class we said how before teaching, teachers should think about student's prior knowledge, possible instructional methods, and planning time. Ms. Bandura certainly does this before she begins teaching. Also, we suggested that teachers should make sure the students are interacting, engaged, and understanding the lesson. As I mentioned, Ms. Bandura researches ways to keep the students engaged and interacted in the lesson, given the limited resources she has access to. Something she does often, while teaching, is say the words "Hocus Pocus". When she says this, the students respond, "everybody focus!" This is just a silly, but effective, rhyme she uses to make sure the students are paying attention and focusing. In addition, when Ms. Bandura writes out her lesson plans, she prepares questions to ask the students at the end of each of her lessons to make sure they know what they have just been taught. With doing this, she can make sure the students are understanding the new knowledge. When we discussed what teachers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

John Debney's Hocus Pocus Hocus Pocus is a "comedy horror" halloween classic which is about the spellbinding adventure Max, his sister and his friend Allison go through to save their town and destroy the witches that Max has unleashed by lighting an enchanted candle. On the way they meet many new friends that help them along the way. This movie is all about suspense, action and adrenaline. The music is all about that too. In this movie music is used to create a variety of emotions throughout the movie. Some of the instruments John Debney (the composer) uses to create these brisk and intriguing sounds are violins, drums for the loud and fast tempo and trumpets and flutes to add in a lighter and mischievous touch. An example of a scene in the movie where it has this touch is when the boy Max lights an enchanted candle in a creepy house. The soundtrack that plays for this scene has instruments like violins, trumpets, drums and flutes to create the affect that something was going to happen and it wouldn't be good. • 41. The Movie Hocus Pocus Was Directed By Kenny Ortega And The... In the late 1940's a man named Joseph Campbell shared his Mythic principal with the world. He explains that there is a three–stage formula that he calls a Hero Journey which is the structure of every story. Though most stories are completely different on the outside, the stories are almost structured around these three stages. Stage 1 is the hero leaves the everyday world and enters another world. While Stage 2 the hero is challenged by opposing forces and must pass a series a test throughout the movie. That will then determine who will be victorious, either the hero or the opposing forces. Stage 3 is tied into Stage 2 because if the hero is victorious, they will return to the ordinary world with a gift for the world. David Kirschner and Mick Garris fulfilled all the Hero's Journey steps. The movie Hocus Pocus was directed by Kenny Ortega and is based on the Salem Witch trails back in Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600's. On October 31, 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, Thackery Binx discovers his sister Emily being spirited away to the Sanderson Sisters' cottage, a trio of witches. The sisters, Winifred, Sarah and Mary, cast a spell on Emily to absorb her youth and regain their own, killing Emily. Binx confronts them, but the witches transform him into an immortal black cat and to live with his guilt. The townsfolk led by Binx's father, capture and hang the witches, but Winifred's spell book casts a curse that will resurrect the witches on All Hallows Eve when a virgin lights ... The song "In the Garden" has been performed by countless entertainers and it provides hope for devout Christians as it provides explicitly religious verses and symbols, (2014). The story of Jesus, dying on the cross and rising again three days later are the basis of Christianity. Lucretius Summary Sparknotes DOCUMENT ANALYSIS: THINK OF BETTER TITLE Molly Pearson HIST 121 – Intellectual Origins of the Contemporary West October 4, 2017 DOCUMENT ANALYSIS – LUCRETIUS: EPICUREAN PHILOSPHY AT ROME Within Lucretius' dialectic and poetic writings in Robert Latham's translation of Lucretius: On the Nature of the Universe, three major topics are discussed: philosophy, religion, and science. Lucretius was devoted to the works of his teacher and renowned philosopher Epicurus, praising him as a prophetic or god–like figure. His poetic prose uses a host of concrete examples to show validity in his beliefs. Lucretius effectively supports the Epicurean worldview that everything can be explained by material forces. Memmius is the addressee of the poem, and Lucretius enlightens him to the nature of happiness, how religion is based on superstition, and the idea of atoms composing earthly matter. Evaluating reality gives mankind the natural answers to life's questions without concerning themselves with gods, prophets, or beliefs, and this was Lucretius' main task in his work. Lucretius was a Roman poet who believed that the Epicurean systems provided the most important and valuable way of thinking. He pledged all of his poetic and persuasive writing skills towards presenting Epicurus' teachings in a concise expose. A key Epicurean doctrine which he explores is the concept of the Nature of Happiness. Philosophy, in this mindset, is a refuge from the trials and tribulations of the ... Prospero's Magic in The Tempest In Shakespeare's The Tempest, Prospero's magic is the means that Prospero teaches his lessons to the plays various characters. Whether or not those lessons were learned or not is irrelevant. The main issue is that Prospero's character is indeed a complex one, and one that deserves much attention. Two essays that look at the complexity of Prospero and his magic are Stephen Miko's "Tempest," and Barbara Mowat's "Prospero, Agrippa, and Hocus Pocus." Both of these essays, in dealing with Prospero and his magic reveal things about Prospero that only enhance the mystery of his character. Mowat's article deals more with the nature of Prospero's magic, and the type of character that it makes him. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is more to his character, however, as is seen by the other two positions offered by Mowat. The second that she offers is that the magic that Prospero controls only allows him control of the physical world. Since he cannot directly influence the thoughts and beliefs of others, he is limited to mostly trickery, albeit impressive trickery. He has the power to conjure spirits, control the weather and raise the dead, but for all this earthly power, he cannot change the basic tenets of men. He has to use his powers to attempt to make the characters of the play change themselves. This sometimes works, and sometimes does not. This interpretation of Prospero is in contrast with the last tenet. Prospero appears at the beginning, according to his own words, to be only interested in gains beyond the world, yet his magic is limited to only things in the world (assuming that spirits are also physical in nature, and not outside the realm of reality.) This means that he is restricted to using earthly means to attain a goal above earthly gains. He is a strangely hypocritical person here. He rejects the world in pursuit of his studies, yet he is restricted by that same earthly limitation. This adds to the dimension of his character. Perhaps he is not as simplistic as he seems. This allows him the possibility of having conflicting goals within the play, as he seems to have. Mowat's third tenet is what rounds out Prospero: the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The musical is a collection of fairytales from authors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and Charles Perrault and put together in a story with music and lyrics written by Stephen Sondheim and dialogue written by James Lapine. How did she not remember the most important day of the year? Jumping up with excitement Nancy head toward the cupboard next to the poster where her wand was and chuckled "TODAY IS THE DAY!" What was the day and what was going to happen? Nancy was known to be a grumpy thirty five year old living in the suburbs of New York. She wasn't well known however she was known for her inability to exchange pleasantries in the neighbourhood. Nancy got downstairs and found a stack of things to do. She was a housewife. Her husband was a corporate boss working in the city and she was the stay at home wife. This was by choice so she could work her magic during the day and while he was asleep at night. Lately things seemed to be dreary in the Brown household. Her husband Quinn would sleep in their bed while Nancy would stay downstairs watching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 115. Discussion "Hocus–Pocus Accounting" by Douglas R. Carmichael, Journal of Accountancy, October 1999; Vol. 188, Iss. 4; pg. 59, 5 pgs Abstract: SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt decried what he termed "accounting hocus–pocus" and called for coordinated efforts to uncover it. He targeted the practice by some companies of improperly boosting reported earnings by manipulating the recognition of revenue. Among the most common methods of doing this are the bill–and–hold transaction and a long list of sham transaction involving shipping, billing and/or related–party involvements. Both the SEC and the AICPA seek to increase independent auditors ' awareness of problems associated with these practices. Full Text: | Copyright American Institute of Certified ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The SEC has emphasized that the above is not a simple checklist. A transaction might meet all the criteria and still fail the revenue–recognition guidelines. The following factors also must be considered: * The date the seller expects payment and whether the seller has modified its normal billing and credit terms for the buyer. * The seller 's past experiences with bill–and–hold transactions. * Whether the buyer has the expected risk of loss in the goods ' market value. * Whether the seller 's custodial risks are insurable and insured. * Whether Accounting Principles Board Opinion no. 21, Interest on Receivables and Payables (on discounting the related receivable), applies. * Whether the business reasons for the transaction have introduced a contingency to the buyer 's commitment. A WELL–PREPARED AUDITOR In planning the audit of all revenue transactions, the auditor must understand the client 's industry, business and products as well as its procedures for accepting orders, shipping goods, billing and recording sales and removing product from inventory. When a client engages in bill–– and–hold transactions, he or she should determine whether the transactions comply with the SEC 's criteria. Auditors need to consider many factors to assess the appropriateness of revenue recognition. For example, in an SEC enforcement case, the seller was a toy maker with a highly seasonal ... • 119. Compare And Contrast Comedy Movies Vs Horror Movies LOL vs. AGGHHH Out of the 326.1 million people in the United States, not everyone is going to enjoy the same things (United States Census Bureau). When it comes to movies, not everyone is going to enjoy the same genres; it has been statistically proven. Although it does not rank the highest on the charts, comedy movies are much more enjoyable than horror movies for many reasons. For instance, comedy movies are a lot more acceptable for children and families. A typical movie night usually consists of family–oriented movies – depending on the family of course – and would include movies such as Hocus Pocus, Moana, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Casper, among many more (IMDb: Most Popular Family Featured Films). Isn't it obvious what all of these fantastic movies have in common? They are all classified, in one way or another, as comedies. Being that there are in fact a variety of family–comedy movies to provide a good laugh, many may want to consider buying that popcorn and visiting the nearest movie store. As most people would agree upon, horror movies are usually intended for mature audiences only (ages 16+). Presumably, a young child shouldn't be exposed to violence, gore, and other inappropriate scare factors. This is one reason movies are rated for specific audiences. For example, a person must be over the age of 18, or have a parent accompany them if they are under the age of 18, in order to watch an R–rated movie (AMC Age Policy). R–rated movies contain such ... • 127. Research Paper On Halloween In Honduras This song plays continually in my head as Halloween approaches. What is supposed to be a day of fun and mischievous, my house turns into a nasty battleground between my religious mother and I. Every year is the same story; mother telling the kids not to give in to the hype and avoid trick or treating at all cost. "We are Christians and we do not celebrate the death, evil spirits, witches, or the devil!" to take part in it means eternal condemnation to your soul. In Honduras or at least in the old days in Honduras, there is no such celebration for Halloween. My sisters and I attempted to create our own costumes a few times, but really no one goes out at night. Halloween simply doesn't exist there. Now I can admit Halloween is a big thing in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She rolls her eyes while my youngest son runs around the house in his pirate zombie costume. We have learned the origins of Halloween for years, some say it is the celebration of the dead, others say is the Wiccan practice, a pagan celebration. Add the urban myths about candy filled with glass, apples injected with poison, and you have the perfect recipe to keep your kids scarred for life. A few churches have agreed to celebrate Halloween to attract more people. Is it ok for Christians to celebrate? I don't have any answers. Take Christmas for example, which is supposed to celebrate Jesus birth, even though he wasn't born on December 25th. Christmas like Halloween is a pagan celebration but thanks to a great marketing campaign, it has become a symbol of Christianity. I always believed in living a holy life meant to have a relationship with all mighty; like a friend. You tell him about your feelings, your thoughts, etc....and he is there to listen, not to judge. But at church, we are taught that committing sin means going to hell right away. Who wants a God who uses fear to have a loving relationship with a person? I grew tired of organized church and people using the scriptures to their own benefit. I became enraged watching these so called "pastors" asking their viewers exaggeratedly amounts of money, "plant a seed of faith" they say, "and God will reward you" Nice try ... • 135. The Witch And Witchcraft For many centuries, witches have been around. The meaning of the word witch has changed over time. Before, it was a gender–neutral term but it is now associated with women. There are different types of witches and they each had different powers. The word witch came from the word Wicca which is an old English word and slowly, it was changed to wicked by the Catholic Church. For as long as it was around, witches and witchcraft were looked at negatively and those who practiced witchcraft were poorly treated. Despite the time difference and geographical areas, there were similarities in how women, witches, and those who were accused were treated. Treatment towards witches was influenced by oral stories, experiences, and pop culture. The word "Wicca" means wisdom. The witches were turned to when one needed help. Witches of different types used spells, magic, and potions. Many had feared witches, especially the Catholic church. Slowly the meaning was changed to wicked. Some types of witches included witch doctors, Halloween witch, seductress or sire, Wiccan, voodoo witch, satanist, and many more. A witch doctor and voodoo witch are someone who uses power to heal and protect against other's magic. A Halloween witch is is a stereotypical witch that is portrayed as the complete opposite of what a woman should be, and is represented as an ugly, old, evil, hag. A seducing woman who uses her looks as a mean to lure one in is a seductress or sire. A Wiccan is one who practices the old religion and believes in the power of the Earth. One who worships the Devil is a satanist. Harmless or not, witches and those accused of witches were poorly treated. In different places, treatment was similar. Treatment included beatings, imprisonment, and death. Many were accused, outed, interrogated, shamed, arrested, tortured, segregated, or killed. Anyone and everyone could be accused but the major targets were women, widows, the poor, the elderly, those who used herbal remedies, and those with knowledge in medicine and astrology. In Africa, specifically Northern Ghana, women were terrorized when accused of witchcraft ("Witches In Exile"). Women who were accused were cast from their family, sent to witch camps, and were abused or even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The broadway musical Chicago was originated on a fictional background of the 1920s, including actual reports on various female induced criminals and crimes. The origin for the structure of the production derived from Maurine Dallas Watkins, a reporter and playwright. In 1924, Maurine was assigned a case on the accused murderers Beulah Annan and Belva Gaertner for the Chicago Tribune. During the twenties, the city spurred for news on Chicago's finest female manslaughters. Thus began the blueprint for the ongoing classic, Chicago. Winnie, Sarah, and Mary, known as the Sanderson sisters, were hung 300 years ago in Salem for practicing witchcraft. 300 years later the Sanderson sisters are back because Max lights the candle. A few things that make this film amazing is the special effects, and the happy ending. Hocus Pocus is one movie that can never get old. My first reason to why Hocus Pocus is a great film to watch is because of the special effects. One highlight of the movie is when the Sanderson sisters fly across the sky on Halloween night with vacuum cleaners. • 151. Syntax In Take A Stand By Jorge Ramos According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, a rebel is "a person who rises in opposition or armed resistance against an established government or ruler," (New Oxford American Dictionary, "rebel"). However, a rebel does not have to rise up against an oppressing government or ruler in order to be considered one, and instead can stand up against "...a tradition, a myth, an injustice, or even...[an] idea," (Ramos 277). In the book Take a Stand, renowned journalist Jorge Ramos emphasizes this point by providing vivid, realistic, and emotional imagery that contributes to the diction that allows the images to convey the meaning of what true rebellion is. To add, Ramos groups the elements of syntax and tone together, having them enable a mutualistic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is an abundance of syntax throughout the novel, and it is best used when accompanied by another literary element. To add, the syntax would usually come in the form of a rhetorical device or emphasized through the use of a parenthetical phrase. One such instance was when Ramos was discussing the injustices of racism with Spike Lee. In the interview, Ramos asked about the possibility of a post–racial society, as to which Lee skeptically and critically responded that as of right now, a post–racial world isn't in effect and that there were "a lot of people who [mistakenly] believed that when [President Obama] put his hand on Abraham Lincoln's Bible and did the oath, that hocus–pocus, abracadabra, poof, we were in a post–racial world,"(227). Although the sentence is somewhat dominated by diction, the syntax that is used to list out "hocus–pocus", "abracadabra", and "poof" adds emphasis to the sarcastic tone that Lee is conveying throughout the passage, as well as highlight how the world is still in need of a change for the betterment of society. • 155. Kurt Vonnegut Analysis The attempts by scholars to define Vonnegut's style of writing lean toward the belief that his work may be modern, postmodern and postmodern humanist (Davis). Accordingly, following the postmodern lean, Davis describes Vonnegut's fiction as "lies that enable a humanism of practice." (Davis). Decidedly anti–war, Vonnegut refused to glorify his most hurtful memories of World War II. His writings took on a common thread of sharp wit and satire. Hilariously, he made fun of his world and attempted to teach a lesson regarding society's quirks and highlight what he thought about society. Born November 11, 1922 and raised by wealthy Germans in Indianapolis, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr's family abandoned their German culture to prove their patriotism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After his release, Kurt received the Purple Heart award for what he referred to as "frost bite". (Allen) Unfortunately, Dresden, well into German territory, built no bomb shelters for its citizens, let alone prisoners of war. As such, soon after Kurt found himself a POW, the Allied troops started bomb runs on the City. Vonnegut fictionalized his experience in his 1969 work, Slaughterhouse–Five. Being a pacifist, the number of pro–war movies spurred Vonnegut to write about his experiences in Dresden in a way that could not be construed to support war. This fictional work, heralded as one of his best books, has frequently been banned from schools for being unpatriotic. In Kurt Vonnegut and the American Novel, Tally struggles to define Kurt's work as acclaimed postmodern revolutionary or marginal science fiction. Tally continues to describe "Vonnegut is a modern author tackling postmodern issues". Vonnegut's lessons in morality in "Cat's Cradle" push the idea that big government is bad and please, add salt. These ideas are carried throughout history in movies and literature. For example, Demolition Man (Stallone 1993) and Animal Farm (Orwell 1945) both deal with the notion that too much government can be a bad thing for society. The common ...
