Volunteering's Positive Impact On Mental Health And Community
1. Reflection Paper On Volunteering
Reflection Paper
I volunteered at the United Boys and Girls of Saint Barbara County (UBGSB). This is a non–profit
youth development agency that deals with children ranging as from five to eighteen years of age in
the county of Saint Barbara County. The organization's mission aims to encourage the young
population to be productive in their endeavors as well as being responsible for everything they are
doing. Areas of concerns are focusing on the academic performance, role models, and adopting
healthy behaviors in the population. I choose this organization because being a psychology student,
it will enable me to work with children and therefore improve my knowledge in psychology and
how to deal with children.

I also noticed that every child in the program was treated in a unique way. According to Raskin,
(1996), it's stated that each person has a unique problem and should be treated in a unique manner.
Each person will be able to define their problem and it's the responsibility of the helper to come up
with a unique way to address the problem (Raskin, 1996). In the organization, children had issues
ranging from poor grades at school, lack of taking part in physical activities and irresponsible
behavior in general. It's, therefore, the responsibility of the organization to offer assistance at an
individual level.
I also learned that when dealing with children it's important to empathize due to the problems and
issues they face so as to be able to help them appropriately. According to Karen 2011, empathy is
very important when it comes to the development of the therapeutic

3. The Importance Of Volunteering In The Community
Volunteering in the community helps develop a connection with the community. Communities are
people who help one another to make an impact in someone's life. Giving back to those that helped
one previously can make a difference. Giving up a few hours during the week to volunteer at a
summer reading program at the community library can bring joy in some child's life. Supporting and
helping younger children learn in our community brings me pride. Volunteering is a way to give
back to your community and gain work experience at the same time. On Thursdays from 6:00–8:00,
my sister and I volunteer at "Norther Tier Library" supporting the summer reading program. The
program involves children from birth to 18 years old. Each age group receives ... Show more content

Helping the local library in the summer reading program is an effective way to give back to the
community. The most satisfying part of the reading program was when children came to report on
books they read. We used the computers to fill out the information, give prizes, and stamps. We
often ask about the books they read to hear the children explain and report on the book and if they
enjoyed reading the book. The most challenging part of the reading program is when several
children came at once. Since there are only two volunteers helping during each time when several
children come in at once it can be difficult to help each child like we would like. The reading
program is over in the middle of August, I expect to continue participating until the end of the
program. Volunteering for the summer reading program was pleasing to me and I gained a fresh
perspective of discovering my passion for teaching. Some other ways people can educate and raise
awareness of reading in the summer could be hosting summer book clubs, school reading programs,
or take–home reading books to promote continued reading throughout the school year. Alexander et
al. (2007) states, "teachers typically spend between 4 to 6 weeks re–teaching material to students
who have forgotten it over the summer" (Alexander et al. 2007). Many teachers must review several
lessons and skills with children who do not continue to use these

When the f–5 tornado decimated the town of Smithville on April 27, 2011, a whopping 15 people
were killed, 40 people injured, 18 homes destroyed, and two businesses were annihilated. (National
Weather Service Weather Forecast Office) Without the help of various organizations, like the
Salvation Army, Smithville would've never recovered from the horrifying disaster, which made me
wonder what the Salvation Army does, what a volunteer needs to do, and what the benefits are of a

Emergency assistance, which is needed whenever there is a fire, hurricane, flood, and other
devastating event, is also crucial in times of need. There are many different ways to volunteer during
the holiday months. The angel program is a program that allows individuals, families, or groups

parents shop for gifts at no cost for their children ages 1–13. Volunteers fill stockings for children
and senior citizens in the stocking program. The Salvation Army holds holiday meals on Christmas
and Thanksgiving at the army shelter for anyone. Holiday food boxes, boxes of non–perishables, are
given to those in need. There is also the renowned Kettle Campaign, where bell ringers stand outside
of businesses and parks collecting money in red kettles, helps pay for all of the Christmas programs

7. Persuasive Essay About Volunteering
I want you to think about this for a second, has anyone ever stopped to help you when you were in
need? Now, this may be someone who is related to you, someone who is not, or maybe you've never
really needed help from anyone. Regardless of who came to mind, anyone, including you, is capable
of volunteering and giving back to the community. Volunteering in your community is notably
beneficial to everyone. If you enjoy making people smile and improving your own health
conditions, volunteering is right down your alley. I have been volunteering off and on at Providence
Assisted Living in New Albany for just over a year now, and I never regret spending my day there.
Volunteering is beneficial because it allows you to learn new skills, meet new people, and improve
your school and/or job application, and that's only a few reasons.
To start us off, volunteering is needed at many places all over the state, country, and even the world.
Whether you want to groom dogs, feed the homeless, spend time with elders, or throw a party for
children, volunteering is not limited to one task. In fact, you expose yourself to new tasks and skills
that you can continue to improve on. You typically work in an unfamiliar area that will allow you to
improve your respect, speaking, patience, and giving. Volunteering has many unexpected benefits as
well. Did you know you can gain confidence by volunteering? Thebalance.com explains that when

During my time in Guelph, I've spent all lot of time volunteering which contributed to my personal

11. Why Volunteering Important?
Edward "Ted" Kennedy, a former senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, once said,
"Volunteer work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dreams shall never die."
(Kennedy, Ted) Merriam Webster defines "volunteerism" as the act or practice of doing volunteer
work in community service. (Webster, Merriam) Not only do you get to feel good about yourself,
but also you get the satisfaction of incorporating service into the lives of people and making a
difference in your community. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer, however the
benefits of volunteering are enormous to you and your community. A person who volunteers
benefits themselves because they get to see how their contribution has made a difference. This
experience contributes to personal development. The selfless act of volunteering provides a spiritual
enhancement as well. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world
becomes a crueler, sadder place, but when we volunteer our time or efforts, we help make our planet
a better, happier, cleaner, and safer home where people work together to make life easier for all.
I first started volunteering when I entered high school. It was a requirement at my school to finish
high school with 80 hours or more. I had just moved to Dallas, Texas and I was very shy and quite. I
was not a very outgoing person and had trouble making new friends. I saw joining Student Council

Volunteering in America and the Salvation Army
One great thing a person can do in life and that is to volunteer in an organization. Volunteering has

that people do in spied of themselves. Volunteering, whether on a large or small scale, plays an
important role in America. With the changes in the economy, cities depend on Volunteers more than

This past summer, I had the opportunity to experience the emergency department at Houston
Methodist Hospital first hand. There, I got to sit at the nurses station, help transport patients to and
from their rooms and the CT scanner, and prepare new bed for the ongoing flow of patients. Even
performing menial tasks, all of the patients and other hospital staff were so grateful for my time. It

Whether it was being a nanny for elementary school children throughout high school, working as a

loved learning and working with children. Thus, I hope to be a pediatric nurse someday. I want to be
there to help children with their time in the hospital. I know that being in a hospital for whatever
reason is very scary, so I want to be there to explain what is going on and make it easier for the

Development and Family Science for the time being.
I think working with children is a completely different kind of work than working with adults. A

this reason, I have spent the past few years working with children in every setting and age group, so

For most, lending a hand to someone only really counts for family members and friends. A person

season comes around people may not have the money to feed their families or buy Christmas gifts
for their kids. Many agencies broadcast on television how to help these families, not just in your
state but around the world. Like most, I for one have never volunteered, but I have donated. For a

The Salvation Army helps families year round. They at any given moment have more than
3,400,000 volunteers helping. There are so many families that need help feeding their kids and
buying even just a single toy for them to open on Christmas morning. Christmas is their busiest time
of the year. During the Christmas season it takes over 10,000 volunteers just to get each job done.
One of their Christmas programs to volunteer for would be the Angel Tree project. It provides
Christmas assistance to families with children 0–15 years of age, or senior adults age 60+. A person
can receive Angel Tree assistance for 6 consecutive years. My favorite is their largest annual
fundraiser. It is the Red Kettle, where people stand outside singing and ringing bells. The kettles are
located at 65 area businesses throughout the greater Jackson area. History behind the Red Kettle
goes back to 1891. The Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee was sad because so many families
were going hungry. He wanted to provide free Christmas dinner to poor families in San Francisco
but had no funding to do so. His goal was to feed 1,000 families for Christmas. He remembered the
Simpson Pots that sailors would drop coins into for needed families and that gave him an idea. He
tried the same idea and soon had enough money to feed the families he wanted to feed and more. Six
years later the idea had spread. That year resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners being delivered
nationwide. Today in the United States, the Salvation Army assists more than 4 million people
during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Kettles are now used throughout the United States. Kettles

21. Comparing Volunteering With NAMI
NAMI is an organization that is built on volunteerism. Volunteers within NAMI are utilized in a host
of different capacities such as answering phone calls on the organization's help–line, volunteers
instruct training and give classes, volunteers are used in national campaigns such as emailing and
calling legislators, volunteers are used to post and review many of the current social media
platforms to further spread NAMI's message. As we continue to be a fast paced society there is
much data that indicates a reduction in individual volunteerism, volunteering with NAMI gives
many without a voice an opportunity to not only be heard but to support an organization dedicated to
improving the health, condition, and standards for those suffering from mental illness which in turn
benefits the community at large. The difference between volunteering and performing service
learning with NAMI is that when one volunteers with NAMI there are few set limitations for the
volunteer experiences as opposed to performing service learning which of course is limited to time
frames such a semester, quarter, practicums, internships, etc. Neither experience is normally

Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we
give." According to this great leader, making money is not the only basis for happiness; he feels that
one must also give of one's time in order to live a more fulfilling life. Following this ideology,
volunteering in one's community would be a means to accomplish a more rewarding existence. This
idea has sparked a debate about whether students should be required to volunteer in order to gain
their diplomas. Requiring volunteer hours to graduate should not be considered because being made
to help others could lead to apathy, there is not a course of study for volunteering, and volunteering
could affect the monetary situation for some students. First and foremost, forced volunteerism for
high school seniors may lead to a greater apathy toward the needs of others. When students are
made to give of their time, they may show their resentment by performing poorly. For instance, last
fall I worked at a soup kitchen. One of the helpers had been required to be there because his mother

From the time I was a young girl, my parents always stressed the importance of volunteering. My

Unfortunately one major question arises from this obligation. Does mandatory volunteering truly
invoke the spirit of volunteering? Selective colleges, in general, are more stringent than they were in
the past by the recruiting process. In fact, the admission committees of these respective colleges
accurately discern inadequate applications from powerful ones, especially in relationship to the
commitment level of community service. Passion for community service is a vital indicator for
recruiting. They desire students who strongly dedicate themselves to volunteer with something that
coincides with their interests or major. However, "mandatory volunteering" generates a belief that
community service is a hindrance and a deliberate waste of time towards obtaining a diploma. The
embodiment of community service diminishes as these educational institutions continue to exercise

have many benefits for you too? Here are some reasons to volunteer:
Learn or develop a new skill
Volunteering is the perfect vehicle to discover something you are really good at and develop a new
skill. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live
forever." It is never too late to learn new skills and no reason why you should stop adding to your
knowledge just because you are in employment or have finished education. Planning and

Sometimes a volunteer experience can lead you to something you never even thought about or help
you discover a hobby or interest you were unaware of. You can strengthen your

New experiences
Volunteering is a brilliant way to get life experience. Whether you build a library or mail flyers to
raise awareness for a local charity, you will experience the real world through hands–on work. This
guide section has established that volunteers can do almost anything and with the new millenium
has dawned an era of infinite volunteer opportunities. For example, it is possible to volunteer in
developing countries and see the direct impact of your actions on some of the most vulnerable
people of the world. You could skydive for charity, a chance to experience the ultimate thrill and
raise funds to help the charity continue its work.
Meeting a diverse range of people

39. Volunteering Personal Statement
Volunteerism has always been an extensive aspect of my character and pertains to much of what I do
within my community. Through actively engaging myself in Calgary, I have come to discover the
problems we face and what I can do as an individual to spread smiles. My passion and dedication
for igniting positive change around me is what allowed me to participate in volunteer activities all
over my city and within my school. Through realizing my potential as a human being to spread
positivity in the world, I began volunteering in school clubs and being a central member of peer
support and discovered the significance of volunteering and it has inspired me to believe in the
power of a helping hand.
This quest led me to the town of Baba Bakala, India in hopes of inspiring younger generations of
their potential. I began by teaching English to underprivileged children, who quickly caught onto the
fundamentals. This experience allowed me to comprehend the dramatic role education plays in
society, and how it can be used as a tool for empowerment and ... Show more content on

Through developing innovative programs, we have been able to respond to the unique and diverse
needs of the community to assist others. Here, I honed my mentorship skills through guiding a
young, immigrant girl to help her better transition from her native country to Canada. Through this
role, I have had exposure to youth from many different countries and cultural backgrounds. This has
allowed me to connect with people who have different worldviews and perspectives; people whose
voices are of equal importance and should have an impact on our decisions as a community. In the

41. The Importance Of Volunteering
At some point in life almost everyone is going to end up in a nursing home. The phase of ageing
causes the elderly to go through a phase of mixed emotions of loneliness and depression. Students
should volunteer in their local community because it can benefit the elderly, the volunteers themself
and the community.
Older students are more and likely to volunteer than younger students ( "volunteering"). Younger
students want to spend more time on playing video games , hanging out with friends and doing what
they prefer to do so volunteering doesn't seem to come to mind. Teens of the ages 16 to 19, are more
and likely to volunteer than other age groups of the age of 35 ("volunteering"). A little over a third
of High School seniors volunteer at least once a month. Among all the Tenth Graders, the
percentages and patterns was similar with the Twelfth Graders. In the Year of 1991 the percentage of
Twelfth Graders who volunteered increased to 24%. ("Volunteering"). As many years came the
percentage of Twelfth graders who volunteered increased. In the year of 2001 the percentages of
Twelfth Graders who volunteered increased to 35% and stayed steady until 2010 ( "volunteering").
Between the years of 2010 and 2014, volunteering among both tenth and twelfth graders
increased("Trends"). Based on these statistics, it is clear that individuals should put in more time in
volunteering because it helps a lot with the elderly and community.

45. Volunteering In Community Service
Volunteering has been something that I truly have enjoyed doing in the past few years. I began
volunteering when I was in highschool, mostly because we had to meet a certain amount of
community service hours in order to be able to graduate. In highschool I was also involved in many
clubs and sports which required for us to do fundraisers and other volunteer work. For example,I
was a member of the National Honor Society where we did a lot of volunteer work in our
community. I have been able to volunteer at many different places such as schools, festivals, sports
tournaments, and at churches. Thanks to all of this, I was able to graduate high school with over 100
volunteer service hours.
Helping out at the Northeast Community Fund was such an interesting experience. I have done some
volunteer work that involved helping provide food to the less fortune before. My senior year of high
school, my NHS group partnered up with an organization and together we were able to package over
10,000 meals in less than 3 hours! We also volunteered at the First United Methodist Church located
in Downtown Decatur. First United has a program called "Dinner Downtown" that is held every last
Saturday of the month and and we were able to help give a hot meal to hundreds of people in need.
With this program we were able to be more involved and able to communicate with the people we
were helping.

As is well known, volunteering is an extremely significant component of our community. Along the
same lines, utilizing volunteers plays a critical role at the agency level in increasing ability of the
agency to serve clients and the community. While most nonprofit organizations put a great value on
volunteer programs, one of the biggest challenges that organizations face is a successful volunteer
recruitment. Although there are many theories about volunteer recruitment, understanding a simple
question, "why do people volunteer?", makes it much easier to find right volunteers for the
organization. People volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some people it may offer a chance to

in the world and in one's community that bring on people to do volunteer work for hands on

interested in having one day. Many internships turn into a very promising career, that change the
lives of many people. That is why giving of oneself, is an important quality to have.
Not only are they helping a great company but creating a future for a career. It is a win–win for
everyone. Furthermore, companies love to bring on interns in their companies, because of the
experience and work skills established before the intern are hired and relationships made.
In conclusion, volunteering provides a great platform to learn skills and experiences of life in

53. Volunteering In The First World
Volunteering has many effects on both the volunteer and the individuals that volunteering helps.
Volunteer work is vital to the growth of society, as money is not abundant for many people. Without
it, society as a whole would be much more harsh and bland. For example, many public service
workers are volunteers, along with many local actors and shelter – both animal and human –
workers. Volunteer work from groups of individuals such as firemen and firewomen, soup kitchen
workers, and the Doctors Without Borders organization, is one of the main reasons that societies
around the world have advanced to become first world countries.
Through selfless acts of many individuals, volunteering is what has made many heavily populated,

Since the dawn of capitalism and democracy, humans have seen that not everyone is born into a
good life. Many people have to work two, or perhaps even three, jobs in order to make a living.
Even then, there is no guarantee that an individual will lead a happy, well–to–do life. As society
grows and matures, human civilization will come to accept that volunteering is a necessity. If no one
in our communities volunteered, there will be too many people that lead lives of poverty and envy.
However, the more that people volunteer, the less amount of people in our communities will struggle
in their lives. Whenever people obtain aid in their lives, they are more likely to reciprocate that help
later in time. The more aid a person receives, the more opportunities they have to lead a better life in
the future. If everyone helped one another in any form or fashion, life would be much better as we
know it. We, as a human civilization, have seen repeatedly that people who have lived through hard
times are more likely to give back to their communities if they have better lives later on. As time
goes on, years from now, hopefully we will see poverty, hunger, heart failure, and other common
emergencies as a thing of the

55. The Benefits Of Volunteering In The Community Service
There is a common misconception that those who volunteer do it as a result of a consequence
typically assigned to them as a result of a negative behavior. Many walk into a volunteering
experience with low expectations, lacking the motivation to acquire anything from the community
service, but soley for the purpose to retain hours to have signed off on a sheet of paper. Generally,
expecations upon arrival are low and volunteers walk into the assigned service hoping to do the bare
minimum and are constantly looking over at the clock eagerly in hopes of turning hours into
minutes. Instead of exhausting most of your energy on pondering how much longer will it be until
one can leave, enjoy the opportunity presented to learn and to become a better individual that is
alloted through this experience. As a volunteer, if you walks in with the mentality of how
unpleaseant they assume the experience to be and how you would much rather be spending their
time doing other things, one will truly never acquire anything from the experience itself. We deem
many things to be more vital in our day to day lives than to help someone in need whose life will be
touched. By coming involved within the community and taking part of changing someone's life for
the better you too will find yourself experiencing a drastic change in how you go about life, the way
you express yourself, how compassionate you are towards others. Volunteering comes with many

July 31, 2015
ABSTRACT
With considerable amounts of psychological research focused on volunteers, this paper will attempt
to indicate and reiterate the motivations of volunteers in non–profit organizations through an
integrative style of thinking. A lot of research is based on the well–being of a person in regards to
their motivation, so this research paper will target the potentially important aspects a volunteer
associates themselves with, with respect of their motivations and their well–being. No real research
has been done, but through an internship at the American Red Cross, this will assist the integrative
style of writing to produce helpful information for volunteers and their motivations.
INTRODUCTION For many years, millions of people have engaged in some kind of volunteering
act that has contributed to a number of unimaginable hours of work. Of these people though, 49%
have represented the adult population with a quarter of them having devoted their time to 5 or more
hours per week for volunteering (the motivations to volunteer). These figures for volunteering have
been inspiring for psychologists to seek and understand the instrumental factors that lead people to
volunteer. Several arguments have been stirred throughout the years, but importantly,

Do you ever think of you could help your community? Are you ever bored in the summertime?
Then, you should volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to help others in your community. You can
simply volunteer to help clean up trash, monitor the elderly, help out at food banks and so much
more. At many public events(eg. Fairs, BBQs), there are normally not enough people to help, so
volunteering could help make some of these events possible. Also, it feels great to help someone
else in need. Volunteering can also affect someone greatly if no one sorted the food at food banks,
some people could go hungry. Everyone should have the same chance you have.
Volunteering is also a great way to make new friends. You can also communicate with someone
completely different from you(eg. a senior, someone less fortunate), and learn how they live their
lives on a normal basis. You may even find someone to have a talk with while you are doing your
designated job. Volunteering is also a great way to learn how to work with others because there are

Croatian heritage. While I was there, I was able to read to children not only in Croatian, but with
Croatian books and texts that had significant cultural references and meaning. I also taught children
and young adults cultural dances and saw just how important it was to be able to connect back to
your heritage and culture even though you were an ocean away. I would describe my experience as
being: fulfilling, genuine, and hopeful. I have had previous volunteering experiences throughout my
life but what was special about volunteering at the cultural center was that I primarily spent most of

floor and preparing them to lay on the bed, an anesthesiologist came in and called the patient who I
was laying down. She had to wait about 2 minutes until the patient was laid down and they had their

These open voids can be filled by volunteering. Along with that even though there are sometimes
one time volunteers, there are also individuals that are always willing to put themselves out there
and not just looking for the gratitude during important times. Volunteering can have a huge impact
on your community. There is options to volunteer in your community by doing a variety of things.
There is a option to donate your time cleaning up in your local area. Another way that their is a
option to donate your time is by helping other individuals doing tasks that they might not be able to
perform on their own. By helping those who are less fortunate than, not only are you doing the right
thing, but you are also setting a good example for others to follow. Many individuals may not be
able to do things on their own or might not be able to afford the basic things that contribute to
survival and by volunteering it opens the opportunity to make these things available to them. There
is such a high demand for volunteers for so many different things. This high demand has caused
people to look into easier and more accessible ways for people to volunteer. There are options to
volunteer through so many ways. There is now ways to micro–volunteering. "By micro–

69. Volunteering In The Nonprofit Sector
3. What is volunteering? How is this important in the nonprofit sector and within our country? What
factors might influence an increase or decrease in volunteer recruitment? What kind of volunteer
retaining strategies your organization will use? Why? By definition, to volunteer is to freely offer to
do something. In terms of the nonprofit sector, having volunteers for your organisation is essential to
its success. Any company, especially a nonprofit, needs people working for it. While most
businesses offer to pay their employees, a nonprofit functions in a different manner. Considering
that a nonprofit does most of its work for a charitable cause, it does not have the ability to pay
people a salary in exchange for working for it. As a result, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is incredibly important within the nonprofit sector because of the amount money given to the
nonprofits. Each and every year, nonprofits across the globe receive millions in donations and
funding in order to execute their tasks. The reason why people need to trust nonprofits with the
money they are given is because the lust to use the the money for personal benefit is compelling.
The leaders who run the organisation can be corrupt, so establishing rapport and a relationship with
them allows for the trust factor to be there. Once it is there, the public will feel as if that nonprofit is
less likely to use the money they receive for personal gain. The public view's the nonprofit sector as
one that wants to help others around them. Over the course of history, the other two sectors have
been plagued with corruption, which is another reason as to why trust within the nonprofit sector is
extremely important. The public needs to be able to put its faith in the fact that one of the three
sectors is genuinely there to offer assistance to those in need. Overall, if trust is not built, there will
be absolutely no reason for the public to put its faith in any sector, thus creating an uneasy
relationship between the two. As long as there is trust within one of the sectors, there is hope that
one day the other two will be able to be trusted on the same level as the

71. Effects Of Volunteering On My Life
Volunteering and its effect on my life
Volunteering has deeply embedded life changing experiences in my life. During my experience as a
volunteer, I volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer based
organization that constructs, and renovates homes for people who were recently in a natural disaster,
deeply in need, and for people who are in need of a stable place to live without being scared of
being evicted. Not only have I learned how I affect other people, but I have also noticed that
volunteering has had an effect on me. In my work as a volunteer, I never knew that what I do for
people in need could have such an effect on me personally, and give me an inside view into less
fortunate peoples lives.
Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity has given me a chance to see into others lives and has
developed my sense of purpose in my community. Habitat for Humanity says, "I cherish the
friendship that develops among people who labor toward common goals in challenging
circumstances. Each time my car pulls up to the build site, I am filled with joy at the prospect of
being able to make a difference, to matter to someone who matters to me" (Habitat for Humanity).
What the author is saying is he or she loves to volunteer, and loves to feel as if it he or she makes a
difference. That is how I felt while I was volunteering. I felt as if I was important throughout my
whole experience, or you could say I felt like I gained a sense of purpose through volunteering. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole
staircase." In my mind that is why I volunteered to build houses to change people's lives. In doing so
I met several people and they told me their stories, and how they ended up in the situation they are
in. Meeting these people in need has given me a inside view into their life, which is much different
than mine. Knowing what these people in need have done to stay alive, feed their children, and stay
off the streets is what motivates me to volunteer. That is what my sense of purpose derives from and
my sense of purpose will grow exponentially when I know what I am doing makes a difference in
someone's life. Volunteering gives me a

"Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons

my parents would always say to me when I was little. I would donate old clothes that did not fit, or
toys I did not play with anymore. Every summer I would volunteer at my town's public library, as
well as at my church. However, as I got older, doing the simple tasks at the library felt tedious and
uninteresting so I stopped volunteering for a while. There were times when I had spare time that
