The Role Of Jazz In New Orleans
Throughout history, jazz started to become very well known among diverse groups of individuals
Jazz began developing in New Orleans and thoroughly established at the beginning of the 1920s. A
plethora amount of slaves were Africans when imported into the new world which was New
Orleans. However, they were not allowed to bring their musical instruments. Indeed, they didn't
leave behind their musical tastes and rhythmic sensibilities. There was an area in New Orleans
where slaves would unite to make music, practice their religious beliefs, and communicate which
was known as Congo Square. African slaves would add their taste in jazz changing European
Church Hymns, folk songs, and dance music. In effect, causing the blending of African aspects

Cultural And Social Norms In Dan Baum's Nine Lives
When you think about New Orleans, you think about the diverse nightlife and the handing out of
gold, purple, and green beads during Mardi Gras. You think about Bourbon Street, French Quarter,
and the wild nightlife that is unique to New Orleans. However, New Orleans offers a vibrant and
complicated history that explains the culture that is one of a kind. It also offers traditions that are
practiced exclusively in New Orleans, and contribute to the character of the city. Nine Lives by Dan
Baum illustrates nine different people's stories that are from New Orleans, and explains their
backgrounds and their individual experiences. They all display different facets of life in the city.
Wilbert Rawlings Jr, John Guidos, and Joyce Montana were three characters in Baum's Nine Lives
who were the three most intriguing and diverse stories that portrayed three very distinct and
different perspectives of New Orleans, and showed the diverse cultures and social norms that are
practiced. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Wil becomes a music teacher for high schools that don't have the best reputation, he slowly
learns that he is what his students depend on. He becomes the father figure for many young kids that
potentially could be heading towards trouble fraught futures, and instead straightens them out with
band. He becomes their rock, and he becomes closely involved in their success. For many, his belief
in them and the pressure he puts on them to succeed is the only motivation they have from anybody.
This displays the poverty in New Orleans, but how closely that community is knit. Wil displays a
disruption to the endless cycle of bad parents creating bad

Early Twentieth Century
Music plays a large part in all cultures throughout the world. Music is used in varying ways, such as
ceremonially, sacredly, and secularly. Pieces and genres of music are reflections of their time and
society. Music has been used throughout its existence to inspire people, to do bigger and better
things or to learn how to inspire other people. Music is as complex and diverse as the people who
listen to it and the time periods from which it comes. With the expansion of technology in the world,
came the expansion of music sound, view, and instrumentation. The Early Twentieth Century
brought with it a new sound and an expanding ability to experiment with music. Like all music,
music of the Early Twentieth Century had its roots from elsewhere places. All of the various types of
music from the Early Twentieth Century built on each other. The development of one led to the
development of the next and so on. The beginning of the Twentieth Century began with Blues
music, which has its roots in African American traditions from the deep southern states in the US.
Blues from the 1920s was based on a twelve bar structure and repeating chords. Blues music was
most often heard from freed African Americans after the Civil War. These newly emancipated
peoples often found the time of their freedom more stressful and difficult than when they were ...

The 1930s gave way to Swing music. Swing is the revival of the "real" jazz style, however, more
instruments were added to the jazz combos, which became known as big band jazz. The new style of
jazz doubled and tripled the number of members in the ensembles and there was the establishment
of three instrumentation sections in the big band jazz ensembles. Due to its difference in style, swing
is sometimes considered a partial dilution of jazz because musicians were organized into groups that

New Orleans Jazz Research Paper
New Orleans jazz is attractive to the military culture in the shared aspect that "New Orleans jazz
developed as a synthesis of social and cultural factors that merged at a particular time and place in
history" (Metzger and Ernest 406). Moreover, "the usual New Orleans musicians' response to
disaster ... has long been an inclination to use music to mitigate the harsh realities endemic to a city
that finds itself perennially in harm's way" (Raeburn 812) in which, post–WWI, WWII, Cold War,
Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and most recently post–9/11, directly relates to military sentimentality.
Further justifying the connection of the need to mitigate harsh realities with music, a sentiment
shared between both New Orleans natives and U. S. Military communities, "the Naval School of
Music add[ed] classes to perform in real–world settings that include performances in war–torn and
developing countries" (Jones 52). This resulted in its recent curriculum "innovation [of] a New
Orleans style brass band to provide the ability to send small, mobile acoustic groups to entertain
audiences in difficult performance conditions" (Jones 52). The Naval School of Music takes
direction from the employed fleet musicians and their supervisors' feedback, rather than faculty, to
quickly adapt a curriculum to the changing naval landscape (Jones 47–52).

Music Is The Greatest Singer Of The 20th Century
The culture of music is one of the most ever evolving outlets society has, people from all around the
world can find common ground between simple beats and rythyms. Music genres are built off of one
another to develop new and unique genres, ranging from classical blues to heavy metal bands. In
between the years 1960 and 2010 America has had over 13 diverse genres rule over musics Hot 100.
Numerous talented artists have advanced music to what the world knows it as today. Frank Sinatra is
one of the most well known and influential singers throughout the history of music, indisputably
being the greatest singer of the 20th Century. Sinatra engineered the idea of colloquially
conventional, his music was a mix of romantics and compelling truth. In 1939 Frank Sinatra
released, "From the Bottom of My Heart" a classic orchestra based song showing the formal
romance in his songs. In between the years 1943 and 1946 Sinatra had 17 Top 10 chart singles. After
his limelight his career earnings dwindled down to $30,000 a record, as music taste shifted away
from Sinatra 's style. He returned to fame as an actor throughout the 50 's to regain his fame, and had
another opportunity at the music industry in the 60 's. Little did he know in 1966 through 1967 he
would released three of his Top 10 singles. (Simon, and Shuster. "Frank Sinatra Biography." Rolling
Stone.) Another band that allowed a positive change in music was The Beatles, who gained their
fame through their success as composers.

Ever wondered where and how cross cultural music happened? A charismatic woman that goes by
the name Debbie Harry changes the music world completely. In the 1980s she released a song with
her band Blondie, 'Rapture' that incorporated rap in her punk rock song. As a blonde white woman
she grabbed global attention and influenced many others with her talent and confidence. Theres no
other way to put this but Debbie Harry indeed changed the way black and whites lived throughout
the music culture and how women will not be the victims of men who think they are nothing better

Why Is Swing Better Than Traditional Jazz
A few years later that jazz was born in 1930 another style was created and it is call swing. Also
called the big band era because they used more instruments than early jazz. Why swing was the
most popular style of jazz? The reason was because it gave people that swing feeling they wanted
the one that made people dance. Is swing better than traditional jazz? It may be popular but that does
not mean that one is better than the other it was just different in a way that attract to many people
and it is hard to describe what swing feeling really means. The instrumentation used in swing music
consisted in five saxophones, four trumpets and four trombones as the front line and the rhythm
section with the guitar, bass, piano and drums. This instrumentation gave a strong and hot style that
people were crazy about. Always keeping the essence of jazz improvising and keeping the swing
feeling although in swing there were not collective improvisations. Using more instruments allowed
musicians to have an advanced ability in terms of tone, control and speed while they are playing a
melody. Because big bands in the swing era could not do collective improvisations bands started to
use more arrangements and the improvisation was only with solos. Duke Ellington was one of the
most influential musician with his band ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Another thing was the emotion that a person could feel while listening to her. She had what is most
important to jazz, that swing feeling that Louis Armstrong influenced on her and she sing it in her
own way. She sang with top jazz musicians and had several songs on the

I Want To Attend New York University
I am thoroughly undecided on what I want to major in. Just within the past few years, I've gone from
wanting to be a historian, to a journalist, a photographer, and even an astrophysicist. I'm interested
in, and fairly good at, a wide range of subjects, and it's hard for me to pick just one that I want to
focus on. Attending a university with a strong liberal arts program and a wide variety of majors and
minors, like New York University, will allow me the chance to explore a wide range of topics before
I decide to specialize in just one.
I am also very interested in study abroad; it's one of my big requirements for colleges. NYU, in my
opinion, has one of the best study abroad programs that I have researched. My interest in study

Reflection Paper
Being in theatre for my whole life has taught me a lot about myself and the world around me. You
learn that there are so many different people and cultures in the world and how vastly different the
are. As an actor we are continually putting ourselves in other people's shoes. This stressed empathy
and a certain cultural understanding about context and timeliness. This leads me to think that I have
a fair understanding of diversity. Diversity is acknowledging that there are an incredible amount of
people that come from a plethora of backgrounds and have formed different cultural identities than
the rest of the population. This sentence is incredibly vague, but diversity is also a vague word.
Diversity in a sense means different, so it all depends on perspective. I look at Chapman as a diverse
campus, which many would agree, but it is diverse from me for totally different reasons than it is for
the person sitting next to me, or my roommate. This is incredibly important when you think in
context of learning and in the American lifestyle. To learn effectively, academically and socially, you
need to be exposed to a diverse population with diverse ideas to have a fully rounded education. The
United States and the American culture was founded on the backs of diversity, which is a fact too
often forgot. It is instrumental to the development of our country and culture that we recognize,
respect, and nurture diversity especially in times of peril. I come from a incredibly small

Evolution Of Jazz And Blues. The Music Styles Of Jazz And
Evolution of Jazz and Blues The music styles of Jazz and Blues are both considered to be great
American musical art forms (Covach, 2015). These styles are also two very important "roots" of
music and have evolved from the late 19th century and early 20th century to lead to the
development of Rock and Roll. Jazz and Blues both originated from African–American
communities when slaves were brought over to North America from Africa (Schuller, 1986). As
time passed and the culture of America was constantly changing, so was the music of that time
period. The country was starting to recover from slavery and many Caucasians and African
Americans were beginning to emerge in the music scene together. From the Blues era, we get artists

The Classic Blues were established by female vocalists like Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, and Bessie
Smith (Ferris, 2009). The Urban Blues were basically the Delta Blues but enhanced with electric
guitars (Covach, 2015). This form of Blues helped to spark the Great Northern Migration. This
migration resulted in many African–American musicians moving north to escape slavery and find
better jobs (Covach, 2015). A few of the artists that we get in the Blues genre are B.B. King, Muddy
Waters, and Bo Diddley (Ferris, 2009). These artists began producing music that followed the
twelve bar form and mimicked the call–and–response style of old field hollers (Covach, 2015). The
Blues paved the way for the up–and–coming form of the Jazz genre called Rhythm & Blues and
eventually it will lead to the creation of Rock & Roll. The Blues had an influence on many of the
bands and artists in the Rock & Roll era. One of the most famous being The Rolling Stones. The
Rolling Stones are a British band that rose to fame during the British Invasion in the United States
(Covach, 2015). They have referenced The Blues as being a huge influence if their music.
The music genre of Jazz is the other great, American, musical, art form. The genre also originated
from African–American communities in the South (Covach, 2015). One of the most famous places
in the south that Jazz style was performed at was

other art form, other than conversation, can give the satisfaction of spontaneous interaction." To me
and many other people who may not have a musical ear jazz seems to be just that, a spontaneous
interaction of music and lyrics, but the origins of Jazz were not spotaneous. Jazz evolved and was
changed by countless musicians and events over the years. The origin of Jazz cannot be directly
traced like some other types of music but it is clear the magnitude in which Jazz draws influence

Although jazz was brought to the attention of mainstream America more than ever before in the
1950s it also faced musical competition via Rock n Roll which was quickly becoming the new
popular trend of music in America (Jazz Timeline). Although jazz had to compete against the
growing popularity of Rock n Roll in the 1950s it showed its resiliance and did not die out.
Throughout the 1950s a new style of jazz known as 'cool jazz' came to prominence which helped
revive jazz. Cool jazz was characterized by it's soft, relaxed sound opposed to bebop and swing
stlyes of jazz from the 1930's and 40's which was more fast paced and exciting. Another important
aspect of cool jazz was the prewritten aspect. While impovization was found in the solos of cool
jazz most of the music was written and rehearsed before time which gave it a more relaxed and
structured sound. Cool jazz had a mass appeal to Americans who were able to enjoy the structed
sound amonst the uncertainity of the post–war world (BeBop, Cool Jazz, and Hard Bop) which once
again shows how jazz was able interlock with the political and cultural enviroments of the

Music And Culture Of Los Angeles
At the beginning of the twenty–first century, popular music and culture became significant
influences on the lives of many individuals within the city of Los Angeles. East Los Angeles ("East
L.A." or "the Eastside"), in particular, was a center of flourishing musical, cultural, and social scenes
with strong connections to the changing Chicano/a identity. Under this environment in which the
Chicano movement (moviemiento) continued to prevail, a large number of socially aware and
politically active, Latin–fusion "Chicano" bands were developed. One of such was the Ozomatli
band, who strived to express their activist viewpoints through popular music. The spatial context of
the band's emergence, their links to past musical movements, and their implementation of a wide
array of musical styles and genres all define their impact on Chicano identity in Los Angeles.
Through their music, the Ozomatli band has showed much about the importance of the changing
Chicano culture and served as the framework for cultural and social dynamics of present–day Los
Angeles. Ozomatli, which originated in Los Angeles, California, is a six–piece (six person), all male
band that was formed in 1995. The name "Ozomatli" is derived from the Nahuatl (Uto–Aztecan
language) word for "the Aztec god of dance who is represented as a monkey figure in the famous

Throughout Austin's history, minority populations were isolated through political acts such as "A

from the area surrounding the capital. In addition, schools for minorities were restricted to just the
East side to force minority populations to move there. By the 1990's, Austin was branded with the
title "Live Music Capital of the World." This title gave rise to an economic and social boost to
Austin, but by doing so, it diluted the native culture into a hipster culture. In 1991, Austin was
awarded the title "Live Music Capital of the World" due to the fact it has the largest number of
music venues for population. According to Baker's article, Austin has 1 music venue for 4,125

The History Of Jazz
History of Jazz Jazz originated in New Orleans as a byproduct to the unique culturally rich
environment that encompassed the city in the 19th and 20th century. Jazz has a long history with
many influential artists, which made it one of the most diverse genres of our time (Basin 2014). Jazz
emerged as a part of a broad musical revolution encompassing many genres with a large
contribution from people of African heritage. Charles Bolden was one of the most influential artists
and is credited as the principle leader of the Jazz era. All in all, Jazz is a diverse genre with a rich
past encompassing many strong musicians (McNulty 2015). With the vestiges of French and
Spanish colonial roots, the resilience of African influences after the slavery era and the influx of
immigrants from Europe jazz was born. All of these cultures were intertwined to produce a new

sold across the country. Ragtime, although based on European classical music, led to the
development of the style known as stride piano, one of the first forms of jazz (Kingman 1990).
Another person instrumental in the development of jazz, was Jelly Roll Morton, who combined
ragtime with various other musical styles, including blues, minstrel show tunes, Hispanic music, and
white popular songs (United 2015). However, his virtuosity at the piano, and his mixture of
composition and improvisation had a lasting effect on jazz performance. Following Morton, was
James Johnson, who was influenced by growing up listening to works of Morton (United 2015). He
was one of the originators of the stride piano style. His music, which used most of the conventions
of ragtime, also included improvisation and elements of the blues, two aspects that were widely

Now, seeing as though the measurable aspect of SMART has been expressed, let us move to its next
part. When speaking about the 'attainability' of the DIY Project, in general, the goals are very
attainable: there already exist similar venues. So, without absolute perfection, this idea is attainable.
We simply invite musicians to play, we invite people to listen, and we invite people to create art.
Again, this is attainable. However, there is one aspect of the DIY Project that may be unattainable: a
alcohol/drug free venue. Unfortunately, some people enjoy sneaking such substances into venues.
For this reason, we will publically exhibit our disdain for drugs and alcohol in the venue: it ruins the
experience for too many people (speaking from prior–knowledge). Also, there must be staff that
watches for drug and alcohol usage. This, in the end, may only allow for substance usage to become
lower than most venues. In sum, then, the DIY Project may not be able to rid itself of all drugs and
alcohol, but it can minimize the presence of such

farmers and the people that usually lived around plains, jazz was more for the city folks. What a

Western Civilization Government
Chronological
For this essay, I will show chronologically the way government has changed throughout western
civilization. I will first give a brief introduction of each time period and then explain the type of
government or laws being used. Government is a very important factor to the prosperity of a
settlement, and throughout this time period multiple different type of governments were put into
effect. The most visual way that government changed throughout this time period is with the
development of a more sizeable party to govern as well as the complexity of the system. Early
governments began as a small leadership of a tribe or clan, however as bigger cities began to grow
many developed what is known as a bureaucracy in order to rule ... Show more content on

This new found kingdom was home of the Minoans. The Minoan society developed a social
hierarchy type of government meaning that depending on one's social status would show where he
would have a voice in the government. However, many communities would allow an individual to
take power over the land with a group of highly trusted nobles to guide him in the right direction.
This shows how the Greeks would use diverse types of governments in the different settlements they
gained control over. The Greeks would develop a new type of society called the Mycenaeans after
they gained control over Thebes, Athens, and Mycenae. The Mycenaeans were a military based
society that was ruled by local kings that followed the ruling of the king of Mycenae. The king and
his warrior aristocracy were at the top of the political chain where they would enforce and create
laws for the citizens of Mycenae. One of the most important political change for the Greeks would
be the development of polis. Polis is defined as a city state where a community of citizens, with no
king, would become self–governing and develop their own laws. In order for the city–state to
prosper they would need to keep the population low to prevent chaos or disagreements in the
society. This would allow the Greeks to be able to individually fit into the overall system of

Analysis Of American Idiot
"Don't want to be an American Idiot." The hit musical, Green Days American Idiot, can be described
as captivatingly entertaining and a show that will surely get your feet stomping to the beat of the
music. The Broadway musical, American Idiot, was originally written by Billie Joe Armstrong and
Michael Mayer and incorporates the music from Green Days hit album American Idiot. It is safe to
say that American Idiot is different from most musicals, as the storyline is developed around a hit
music album from a popular artist. A familiar musical that also does this is Mamma Mia that
incorporates the music from ABBA. The story of American Idiot is centered around three friends,

Additionally, such harmonies can be experienced throughout the show by the entire cast.
Particularly in the song, Jesus of Suburbia. In addition to the melodious singing that is heard
throughout the musical, the dancing observed is also well performed. After all a musical is not a
musical without dancing. The movements made by the cast in each song are well executed as the
cast puts their full effort into each diverse movement. The dancing observed follows many diverse
styles such as, punk rock style jumping, the slow gracefulness of contemporary movements, and
Arial dancing. In addition, the music performed is by a live band that encompasses many different
instruments such as guitar, drums, violin, and cello. Thus, adding to the different dynamics
incorporated throughout the show. Furthermore, the band is cleverly incorporated as the musicians
become part of the show from the way they are dressed and placed on the stage among all the actors.
These different dynamics seen throughout the show help to emphasize the story of the show, while
highlighting the diverse talents of the cast. Moreover, the show incorporates cool special effects
throughout the show. First, they use different light features that make the set come alive. The lights
designed for the show include different colors. The different colors of lights help to convey different
emotions to the audience. For example, red lights are projected

In mid–2001, it was reported that former bassist Justin Sane had attempted suicide by drinking
excessive amounts of cough syrup. The attempt had an impact on the band's Take Action Tour. After
lead guitarist Synyster Gates joined the band, at the end of 1999 when he was 18, the introductory
track "To End the Rapture" was re–recorded featuring a full band element. The album was
subsequently re–released on Hopeless Records in 2002. The band started to receive recognition,
performing with bands such as Mushroomhead and Shadows Fall and playing on the Take Action

Having found a new bassist, Johnny Christ, the group released their second studio album titled
Waking the Fallen on Hopeless Records in August 2003. The album featured a more refined and

How Did Latin American Culture Develop
The term 'Latin America' encompasses not only South and Central America but the Caribbean also.
The many different ethnicities and cultures present in Latin American music make it diverse and
hard to categorise.Latinos have helped bring these sounds to U.S. audiences, and –– just like
European Americans and African Americans –– they have contributed new musical flavors that

Yes, Austin has great local bands and many avid music fans but so does Houston. Even though it's

neighborhoods, our workplaces, and especially our music scene (Rhodes 1). There are a wide variety
of genres being represented in Houston. Yes, Houston has the nickname "Screwston," but there are
also huge followings in other genres, like indie rock, alternative, jazz, classical, blues, metal, and

October 2, 2014 Jazz Roots: The Creation of Jazz Louis Armstrong said "Jazz is only what ya are"
(Deveaux, Giddins 106). During the nineteenth century, African American people faced many
obstacles and coped through activities such as singing, and musical skills. Especially in New
Orleans, a port city where people were either black (or colored creole a mixed African and Spanish
or African and French descent) or white. Jazz is a mixture of many diverse components, and genres
like polyrhythmic African American folk music. Over the years jazz has been played by every color
of people, every gender and age but still remains an African American based genre. Jazz was created

He contributed so much to jazz just by being himself. In my eyes, art forms like music cannot be
just made up, or just "written". I believe you have to feel it in your heart, and just going with the
heart is what Armstrong believed. He contributed so much to jazz history by his mode of
"improvisation". He contributed to jazz by "establishing the blues as jazz's melodic and spiritual
foundation; introduced scat singing; created brilliant improvisations on popular songs; introduced a
new rhythmic energy called swing" (Deveaux, Giddins 117). "Armstrong established jazz as music
that prizes individual expression. His records revealed improvised music was just as good as written
music" (Deveaux, Giddins 98). Louis Armstrong said, "You can't just master an instrument, you
have to make it an extension of yourself" (Deveaux, Giddins 99). Another largely influential jazz
musician was Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke. He was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1903. He was
one of the first white jazz musicians and was respected and loved by the amazing Louis Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong was a fan of Beiderbecke, and said "Bix stood up and took a solo and I'm tellin'
you, those pretty notes went all through me." (Sandke 102). On many occasions Armstrong believed
Beiderbecke was a "born genius." He warmly reminisced about jam sessions they had together,
stating, and "I've never heard such good music since" (Sandke 102). Beiderbecke also contributed
largely to jazz improvisation. He learned of jazz through recordings, instead of being taught by a
mentor like many musicians. Records show that Beiderbecke was a genius like Armstrong at a very
early age. Both musicians were great musicians by their teen years. Meeder wrote "A newspaper in
Beiderbecke's home town reported that ate age seven he could reproduce, instantly, in any key, the
melody and bass accompaniment to a piece after hearing the piece just once" (128). Armstrong

The music of the city
As Melbourne is the most liveable city in the world it also has a very wide variety of music. As you
venture though the exquisite streets of Melbourne, on almost every block you would find a musician
busking for money and usually they are very good. The definition of music is "Vocal or instrumental
sound (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of
motion" and to me I personally Melbourne's CBD conveys this definition and is a set of rules that
these musicians live by. In Melbourne, there is many places to go and listen to music, whether it's in
the streets of Elizabeth street or in the clubs of king street, Melbourne never fails to provide a good

Meaning Of Music In Chicago
What is music? Music in the dictionary means an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and
emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color; the
tones or sounds employed, occurring in single line (melody) or multiple lines (harmony), and
sounded or to be sounded by one or more voices or instruments, or both. Music in essences has a
versatile aspect that cannot be defined to real musicians as the quoted definition from the dictionary.
The real definition of music is what every single individual who listens, plays, or sings it can

Personal Narrative: Moving To Texas
Texas born and raised means a lot of things, but for me it means diverse. As a child, I grew up in the
southside of San Antonio and attended a Catholic school which contributed majorly to how I act
now and has impacted how I view others. However, in the 7th grade, I moved to the Texas Hill
Country and learned a plethora of contradictory views. This has led me to form my own opinions on
what is right and wrong and meshed city and country life to create a well–rounded, diverse Texan.
Life in San Antonio was anything but simple. I was just a child but even I could understand the
hardships many people, including my family, had to face. I had to grow up and learn not to ask for
things, or not to complain because I knew we were already living on means end. When you live in a
city you have to be strong and independent and know who to not to trust, because your logic was
your best friend. Catholic School was in a way good for me; it helped me learn how to value
friendship which is something many people lack nowadays. But I always wonder what it would be

Rock And Roll Culture
Rock and roll has come a long way through the years from a dance fad in the 1950's to a political
and cultural image that is recognized around the globe. Rock and roll has come to define the roots of
teenage rebellion, those who refuse to follow the norms or have disrespect for authority. The style of
rock and roll itself is essentially a 'melting pot' of music. In other words, the genre of rock and roll is
a complete combination of sounds that include jazz, country, blues, gospel, swing, classical, and
ethnic music. However, African Americans are undeniably responsible for the development of the
genre and are sadly often overlooked for their contribution. Whether it is a simple melody of three
chords to a complex musical permutation, rock and roll is an absorbent genre that can deliver deep
emotions to their audiences. Anything from love, hate, and fear to lust, sadness, joy, and even a
strong sense of genuineness. Many things can be said about rock but the fact is that it is the most
widely diverse of all music genres. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

New Orleans Jazz
Introduction
Jazz is a music genre which came up from the creativity of different people from diverse
backgrounds. It's a known fact that it originated from New Orleans, USA. The music genre was
often played at funerals and sometimes in churches too. Even before the jazz music, for the people
of New Orleans music was just more than a luxury is was considered a necessity.
Origin of Jazz New Orleans jazz music started back in the nineteenth century, and it was as a result
of the love for music that the new Orleanais have and due to the treating of music as a necessity and

History Of New Orleans: The Great Migration
How has migration, and subsequent contact between diverse people in urban America, led to
innovation in American music?
Some historians will tell you that jazz came north to Chicago on Mississippi riverboats straight out
of New Orleans, but the reality is a great deal more complicated. Jazz came to Chicago's railway
station. This was caused by a major chapter, both in music and American history. The mass
movement of African Americans from South to North was known as "The Great Migration" and it
brought many African Americans north for the same reasons. Failing crops, continued
discrimination and a great demand for workers. In fact, it was estimated that one million African–
Americans came north looking for a better life. Between 1916 and the ... Show more content on

Jazz : The Emergence Of Jazz
Jazz: the Emergence Jazz is a form of music that originated in the United States during the early
1900s. It was a form of music that influenced generations, started the music careers of many great
musicians, and its ties are in the melting pot of New Orleans. Jazz has a variety of styles to listen to
and also has many diverse musicians to experience these diverse sounds from. Jazz is a great form
of music. Its different styles and musicians give it diversity, while strengthening ties to the African
American community. It grew out several different forms of music in the melting pot of the United
States known as New Orleans, in the 1800s, where African American, European, Americans, French,
Spanish, English and Native Americans mingled and mixed (American Jazz). The culture of the city
absorbed elements from each of these groups, and is immediately obvious is music. The musicians
of the city shared their musical styles and played together (Matthews, Andrew). The music styles
they shared formed one of the earliest styles of jazz.
The roots of it are in the cities where Jazz was a big influence on the cities: New Orleans, Chicago,
New York, Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Detroit. At various times in history they have been
incubators for jazz. Jazz was not created overnight (Jazz Makers pg. 9). The elements that grew

The Music Of Elvis Presley
There were many types of bands and many diverse forms of music coming out and showing up in
the 1960's. It was a time for a new form of music, a new sound, it was time for a revolution. There
were all types of music being played and new music being created. There were all sorts of bands
playing different kinds of music and playing with their own styles while taking over the airwaves.
Whether it be rock, soul, or any other type of music, it was a revolution. This also led to new bands
forming and breaking into the industry.
In the Sixties rock music came of age and dominated the popular music charts. Elvis Presley
continued to score hits in the early part of the decade, but the music continued to diversify with
music like the folk revival, the Brill Building sound, Phil Spector 's wall of sound, girl groups and
surf music, all impacting the early part of the decade. The Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels brought
more African–American artists to the forefront of the pop charts. By 1964 American artists were
sharing the top of the charts with U.K. bands led by great bands like the Beatles and The Rolling

The Role Of Jazz In New Orleans

  • 1. The Role Of Jazz In New Orleans Throughout history, jazz started to become very well known among diverse groups of individuals Jazz began developing in New Orleans and thoroughly established at the beginning of the 1920s. A plethora amount of slaves were Africans when imported into the new world which was New Orleans. However, they were not allowed to bring their musical instruments. Indeed, they didn't leave behind their musical tastes and rhythmic sensibilities. There was an area in New Orleans where slaves would unite to make music, practice their religious beliefs, and communicate which was known as Congo Square. African slaves would add their taste in jazz changing European Church Hymns, folk songs, and dance music. In effect, causing the blending of African aspects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Cultural And Social Norms In Dan Baum's Nine Lives When you think about New Orleans, you think about the diverse nightlife and the handing out of gold, purple, and green beads during Mardi Gras. You think about Bourbon Street, French Quarter, and the wild nightlife that is unique to New Orleans. However, New Orleans offers a vibrant and complicated history that explains the culture that is one of a kind. It also offers traditions that are practiced exclusively in New Orleans, and contribute to the character of the city. Nine Lives by Dan Baum illustrates nine different people's stories that are from New Orleans, and explains their backgrounds and their individual experiences. They all display different facets of life in the city. Wilbert Rawlings Jr, John Guidos, and Joyce Montana were three characters in Baum's Nine Lives who were the three most intriguing and diverse stories that portrayed three very distinct and different perspectives of New Orleans, and showed the diverse cultures and social norms that are practiced. ... He becomes the father figure for many young kids that potentially could be heading towards trouble fraught futures, and instead straightens them out with band. He becomes their rock, and he becomes closely involved in their success. For many, his belief in them and the pressure he puts on them to succeed is the only motivation they have from anybody. This displays the poverty in New Orleans, but how closely that community is knit. Wil displays a disruption to the endless cycle of bad parents creating bad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Early Twentieth Century Music plays a large part in all cultures throughout the world. Music is used in varying ways, such as ceremonially, sacredly, and secularly. Pieces and genres of music are reflections of their time and society. Music has been used throughout its existence to inspire people, to do bigger and better things or to learn how to inspire other people. Music is as complex and diverse as the people who listen to it and the time periods from which it comes. With the expansion of technology in the world, came the expansion of music sound, view, and instrumentation. The Early Twentieth Century brought with it a new sound and an expanding ability to experiment with music. Like all music, music of the Early Twentieth Century had its roots from elsewhere places. All of the various types of music from the Early Twentieth Century built on each other. The development of one led to the development of the next and so on. The beginning of the Twentieth Century began with Blues music, which has its roots in African American traditions from the deep southern states in the US. Blues from the 1920s was based on a twelve bar structure and repeating chords. Blues music was most often heard from freed African Americans after the Civil War. These newly emancipated peoples often found the time of their freedom more stressful and difficult than when they were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The 1930s gave way to Swing music. Swing is the revival of the "real" jazz style, however, more instruments were added to the jazz combos, which became known as big band jazz. The new style of jazz doubled and tripled the number of members in the ensembles and there was the establishment of three instrumentation sections in the big band jazz ensembles. Due to its difference in style, swing is sometimes considered a partial dilution of jazz because musicians were organized into groups that demanded a higher proportion of written ... • 13. New Orleans Jazz Research Paper New Orleans jazz is attractive to the military culture in the shared aspect that "New Orleans jazz developed as a synthesis of social and cultural factors that merged at a particular time and place in history" (Metzger and Ernest 406). Moreover, "the usual New Orleans musicians' response to disaster ... has long been an inclination to use music to mitigate the harsh realities endemic to a city that finds itself perennially in harm's way" (Raeburn 812) in which, post–WWI, WWII, Cold War, Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and most recently post–9/11, directly relates to military sentimentality. Further justifying the connection of the need to mitigate harsh realities with music, a sentiment shared between both New Orleans natives and U. S. Military communities, "the Naval School of Music add[ed] classes to perform in real–world settings that include performances in war–torn and developing countries" (Jones 52). This resulted in its recent curriculum "innovation [of] a New Orleans style brass band to provide the ability to send small, mobile acoustic groups to entertain audiences in difficult performance conditions" (Jones 52). The Naval School of Music takes direction from the employed fleet musicians and their supervisors' feedback, rather than faculty, to quickly adapt a curriculum to the changing naval landscape (Jones 47–52). ... • 29. Why Is Swing Better Than Traditional Jazz A few years later that jazz was born in 1930 another style was created and it is call swing. Also called the big band era because they used more instruments than early jazz. Why swing was the most popular style of jazz? The reason was because it gave people that swing feeling they wanted the one that made people dance. Is swing better than traditional jazz? It may be popular but that does not mean that one is better than the other it was just different in a way that attract to many people and it is hard to describe what swing feeling really means. The instrumentation used in swing music consisted in five saxophones, four trumpets and four trombones as the front line and the rhythm section with the guitar, bass, piano and drums. This instrumentation gave a strong and hot style that people were crazy about. Always keeping the essence of jazz improvising and keeping the swing feeling although in swing there were not collective improvisations. Using more instruments allowed musicians to have an advanced ability in terms of tone, control and speed while they are playing a melody. Because big bands in the swing era could not do collective improvisations bands started to use more arrangements and the improvisation was only with solos. Just within the past few years, I've gone from wanting to be a historian, to a journalist, a photographer, and even an astrophysicist. I'm interested in, and fairly good at, a wide range of subjects, and it's hard for me to pick just one that I want to focus on. Attending a university with a strong liberal arts program and a wide variety of majors and minors, like New York University, will allow me the chance to explore a wide range of topics before I decide to specialize in just one. I am also very interested in study abroad; it's one of my big requirements for colleges. NYU, in my opinion, has one of the best study abroad programs that I have researched. This stressed empathy and a certain cultural understanding about context and timeliness. This leads me to think that I have a fair understanding of diversity. Diversity is acknowledging that there are an incredible amount of people that come from a plethora of backgrounds and have formed different cultural identities than the rest of the population. This sentence is incredibly vague, but diversity is also a vague word. Diversity in a sense means different, so it all depends on perspective. I look at Chapman as a diverse campus, which many would agree, but it is diverse from me for totally different reasons than it is for the person sitting next to me, or my roommate. This is incredibly important when you think in context of learning and in the American lifestyle. To learn effectively, academically and socially, you need to be exposed to a diverse population with diverse ideas to have a fully rounded education. The United States and the American culture was founded on the backs of diversity, which is a fact too often forgot. It is instrumental to the development of our country and culture that we recognize, respect, and nurture diversity especially in times of peril. I come from a incredibly small ... • 45. Evolution Of Jazz And Blues. The Music Styles Of Jazz And Evolution of Jazz and Blues The music styles of Jazz and Blues are both considered to be great American musical art forms (Covach, 2015). These styles are also two very important "roots" of music and have evolved from the late 19th century and early 20th century to lead to the development of Rock and Roll. Jazz and Blues both originated from African–American communities when slaves were brought over to North America from Africa (Schuller, 1986). As time passed and the culture of America was constantly changing, so was the music of that time period. The country was starting to recover from slavery and many Caucasians and African Americans were beginning to emerge in the music scene together. From the Blues era, we get artists like B.B. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Classic Blues were established by female vocalists like Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, and Bessie Smith (Ferris, 2009). The Urban Blues were basically the Delta Blues but enhanced with electric guitars (Covach, 2015). This form of Blues helped to spark the Great Northern Migration. This migration resulted in many African–American musicians moving north to escape slavery and find better jobs (Covach, 2015). A few of the artists that we get in the Blues genre are B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Bo Diddley (Ferris, 2009). These artists began producing music that followed the twelve bar form and mimicked the call–and–response style of old field hollers (Covach, 2015). The Blues paved the way for the up–and–coming form of the Jazz genre called Rhythm & Blues and eventually it will lead to the creation of Rock & Roll. The Blues had an influence on many of the bands and artists in the Rock & Roll era. One of the most famous being The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones are a British band that rose to fame during the British Invasion in the United States (Covach, 2015). They have referenced The Blues as being a huge influence if their music. The music genre of Jazz is the other great, American, musical, art form. The genre also originated from African–American communities in the South (Covach, 2015). Cool Jazz Research Paper Stan Getz, a popular jazz saxophonist in the 1950s and on, once said "As far as playing jazz, no other art form, other than conversation, can give the satisfaction of spontaneous interaction." To me and many other people who may not have a musical ear jazz seems to be just that, a spontaneous interaction of music and lyrics, but the origins of Jazz were not spotaneous. Jazz evolved and was changed by countless musicians and events over the years. Although jazz was brought to the attention of mainstream America more than ever before in the 1950s it also faced musical competition via Rock n Roll which was quickly becoming the new popular trend of music in America (Jazz Timeline). Although jazz had to compete against the growing popularity of Rock n Roll in the 1950s it showed its resiliance and did not die out. Throughout the 1950s a new style of jazz known as 'cool jazz' came to prominence which helped revive jazz. Cool jazz was characterized by it's soft, relaxed sound opposed to bebop and swing stlyes of jazz from the 1930's and 40's which was more fast paced and exciting. Another important aspect of cool jazz was the prewritten aspect. While impovization was found in the solos of cool jazz most of the music was written and rehearsed before time which gave it a more relaxed and structured sound. Cool jazz had a mass appeal to Americans who were able to enjoy the structed sound amonst the uncertainity of the post–war world (BeBop, Cool Jazz, and Hard Bop) which once again shows how jazz was able interlock with the political and cultural enviroments of the ... • 53. Music And Culture Of Los Angeles At the beginning of the twenty–first century, popular music and culture became significant influences on the lives of many individuals within the city of Los Angeles. East Los Angeles ("East L.A." or "the Eastside"), in particular, was a center of flourishing musical, cultural, and social scenes with strong connections to the changing Chicano/a identity. Under this environment in which the Chicano movement (moviemiento) continued to prevail, a large number of socially aware and politically active, Latin–fusion "Chicano" bands were developed. One of such was the Ozomatli band, who strived to express their activist viewpoints through popular music. The spatial context of the band's emergence, their links to past musical movements, and their implementation of a wide array of musical styles and genres all define their impact on Chicano identity in Los Angeles. Through their music, the Ozomatli band has showed much about the importance of the changing Chicano culture and served as the framework for cultural and social dynamics of present–day Los Angeles. Ozomatli, which originated in Los Angeles, California, is a six–piece (six person), all male band that was formed in 1995. The name "Ozomatli" is derived from the Nahuatl (Uto–Aztecan language) word for "the Aztec god of dance who is represented as a monkey figure in the famous Aztec Sun Stone" ("The Battle of Los Angeles" 725). In addition, schools for minorities were restricted to just the East side to force minority populations to move there. By the 1990's, Austin was branded with the title "Live Music Capital of the World." This title gave rise to an economic and social boost to Austin, but by doing so, it diluted the native culture into a hipster culture. In 1991, Austin was awarded the title "Live Music Capital of the World" due to the fact it has the largest number of music venues for population. We simply invite musicians to play, we invite people to listen, and we invite people to create art. Again, this is attainable. However, there is one aspect of the DIY Project that may be unattainable: a alcohol/drug free venue. Unfortunately, some people enjoy sneaking such substances into venues. For this reason, we will publically exhibit our disdain for drugs and alcohol in the venue: it ruins the experience for too many people (speaking from prior–knowledge). Also, there must be staff that watches for drug and alcohol usage. This, in the end, may only allow for substance usage to become lower than most venues. I believe you have to feel it in your heart, and just going with the heart is what Armstrong believed. He contributed so much to jazz history by his mode of "improvisation". He contributed to jazz by "establishing the blues as jazz's melodic and spiritual foundation; introduced scat singing; created brilliant improvisations on popular songs; introduced a new rhythmic energy called swing" (Deveaux, Giddins 117). "Armstrong established jazz as music that prizes individual expression. His records revealed improvised music was just as good as written music" (Deveaux, Giddins 98). Louis Armstrong said, "You can't just master an instrument, you have to make it an extension of yourself" (Deveaux, Giddins 99). Another largely influential jazz musician was Leon Bismark "Bix" Beiderbecke. He was born in Davenport, Iowa in 1903. He was one of the first white jazz musicians and was respected and loved by the amazing Louis Armstrong. Louis Armstrong was a fan of Beiderbecke, and said "Bix stood up and took a solo and I'm tellin' you, those pretty notes went all through me." (Sandke 102). On many occasions Armstrong believed Beiderbecke was a "born genius." He warmly reminisced about jam sessions they had together, stating, and "I've never heard such good music since" (Sandke 102). Beiderbecke also contributed largely to jazz improvisation. He learned of jazz through recordings, instead of being taught by a mentor like many musicians. Records show that Beiderbecke was a genius like Armstrong at a very early age. Both musicians were great musicians by their teen years. Meeder wrote "A newspaper in Beiderbecke's home town reported that ate age seven he could reproduce, instantly, in any key, the melody and bass accompaniment to a piece after hearing the piece just once" (128). The definition of music is "Vocal or instrumental sound (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of motion" and to me I personally Melbourne's CBD conveys this definition and is a set of rules that these musicians live by. In Melbourne, there is many places to go and listen to music, whether it's in the streets of Elizabeth street or in the clubs of king street, Melbourne never fails to provide a good variety of music. Describe Houston When someone asks a Houstonian about the music scene around town, the answer is usually quite bleak and a lot people don't really know much about it beyond Beyoncé and DJ Screw. It is especially considered "nonexistent" in comparison to another Texas city, Austin. Austin has this huge reputation of having a phenomenal music scene and it is even billed as "The Live Music Capital of the World." Yes, Austin has great local bands and many avid music fans but so does Houston. Even though it's not extremely noted, Houston has one of the most influential and diverse music scenes in the country. If you asked people to describe Houston in one word, "Diverse" would probably be the most commonly used word. We are the 7th most diverse city in the country ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Houston is extremely well known for its many rap artists and producers like Bun B, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, and, of course, DJ Screw. DJ Screw was the man who created the "chopped and screwed" technique that is heavily used in hip–hop music to this day. Every year on June 27th, Houston celebrates "Screw Day" because of his legendary freestyle called "June 27th (Caldwell 1). Screw died almost 15 years ago and his legacy will live on forever in the hip–hop/rap industry and especially in Houston. We've had some extremely influential rappers come out of Houston and Drake, a non–Houstonian, reps Houston like it's his hometown. Even though a lot of people don't like the fact that he honors Houston so much and puts on Houston Appreciation Weekend, he brings so many people to Houston and the more people who come here, the more they get to discover how Houston is a great music city. I work in retail and during Houston Appreciation Weekend, I met people from New York City, Miami, and LA who just flew out here to see Drake. He uses his notability to promote Houston artists and gives them a lot of love. Just recently, he had an exhibit on Bun B and many important people in the city were at the event. Even though he's not from Houston, he honors it really hard and has had a huge influence. While Houston is notable for the rap community, there have been many other artists in different ... As a child, I grew up in the southside of San Antonio and attended a Catholic school which contributed majorly to how I act now and has impacted how I view others. However, in the 7th grade, I moved to the Texas Hill Country and learned a plethora of contradictory views. This has led me to form my own opinions on what is right and wrong and meshed city and country life to create a well–rounded, diverse Texan. Life in San Antonio was anything but simple. I was just a child but even I could understand the hardships many people, including my family, had to face. I had to grow up and learn not to ask for things, or not to complain because I knew we were already living on means end. When you live in a city you have to be strong and independent and know who to not to trust, because your logic was your best friend. Catholic School was in a way good for me; it helped me learn how to value friendship which is something many people lack nowadays. But I always wonder what it would be like if I went ... At first, I thought my world had come crumbling down because no one there was like me. This made me learn to be open minded and fuels me to make sure that nobody ever feels left out like I did. Eventually, I found my groove, but I soon began to notice a distinct difference from the country; it has a complete lack of diversity. While I admit there are some "wealthier" neighborhoods around the lake, most people are just one and the same. I did begin to notice similarities between the city and the country which taught me they are similar, just in different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rock and roll has come to define the roots of teenage rebellion, those who refuse to follow the norms or have disrespect for authority. The style of rock and roll itself is essentially a 'melting pot' of music. In other words, the genre of rock and roll is a complete combination of sounds that include jazz, country, blues, gospel, swing, classical, and ethnic music. However, African Americans are undeniably responsible for the development of the genre and are sadly often overlooked for their contribution. Whether it is a simple melody of three chords to a complex musical permutation, rock and roll is an absorbent genre that can deliver deep emotions to their audiences. • 141. History Of New Orleans: The Great Migration How has migration, and subsequent contact between diverse people in urban America, led to innovation in American music? Some historians will tell you that jazz came north to Chicago on Mississippi riverboats straight out of New Orleans, but the reality is a great deal more complicated. Jazz came to Chicago's railway station. This was caused by a major chapter, both in music and American history. The mass movement of African Americans from South to North was known as "The Great Migration" and it brought many African Americans north for the same reasons. Failing crops, continued discrimination and a great demand for workers. In fact, it was estimated that one million African– Americans came north looking for a better life. Between 1916 and the ... Luckily, as I was searching online for different performances I ran across The Flex Crew performing at Skully's music diner. I have been to Skully's once before to watch a folk band perform. The atmosphere was a lot different than when we saw The Flex Crew. Obviously, the genre of music was a lot different, along with the atmosphere of the crowd. I was very surprised by the number of people in the bar that evening. Mostly, because the performance started at 11PM and the world series was on. On top of this, online their website said the show began at 10PM, but like a very great band they came out at their own pace. In the meantime, there was a DJ performing to keep the crowd alive. The Flex Crew is a reggae band from the Columbus area. After doing a little research I learned they are known as "the best reggae band in the Midwest." A friend and I went to Skully's Music Diner on Sunday night to watch The Flex Crew. Their band consisted of seven members, and they all varied on the different type of instruments.
