Compare And Contrast The Life Of Boy And Dunny
TEXT SAYSI/WE SAY 1.Compare and contrast the lives of Boy and Dunny as reported in this chapter. Does this explain their ambivalent
relationship? Dunstan Hannah: (108) Dunny bought a suit with only 24 dollars and he wore a shirt twice a week and changed his underwear
once, shows his character is dull and doesn't care about many or materialistic things. Farzad: This reflects their childhood "Once, temporarily
envious of Boy, I bought a silk shirt and paid nine dollars for it.", shows that Dunny is still jealous of Percy even all these years after. Michelle: "I
recognize now that my limp was always worse when I envied Boy". Dunny has a disability, and wants the respect from others just like how they give
it to Boy (113). "Diana. I often yearned for her" (115), at this point Dunny feel jealous of Boy that he is going out with so many girls, while Dunstan

Dempster used to give away belongings (vase and vegetables) which can be seen as a caring and giving characteristic trait which matches the
definition of a fool–saint as she wasn't purposely doing it to help others but without a logic or to just make herself content. Danat: What she was doing
seemed like "madness" in front of Father Regan's eyes. Keren: A fool–saint does not amount to anything, so as we can see after that even after doing
all these good deeds she is not amounting to anything as her condition is worse along with her family issues. A fool–saint's bad luck rubs on people
and just like that her bad luck rubs on her husband (getting sick and dying) and her son (who ran to the circus). Wajeeha: It also rubbed on Dunny's
life since unlike Percy his life was dull and boring. But, whatever Mary did it seemed she wasn't a saint but had a saint–like behaviour but definitely
wasn't foolish since whatever she did, she probably didn't do with a proper intend, but it turned out to something good which relates to the "accidental"

Descriptive Essay About My Family
On October 20, 2000 I was brought into the world 1:38 in the morning at Hurley Hospital. I was around 8lbs. My mother likes to tell my siblings
and I that she had all of our names planned ever since she was a little girl. She ended up naming me Alexa Rae Odom. She says the she named me
after the singer Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. My mother also like to tell me that I interrupted the poker game she was winning just before she
went into labor. She says that we could used that money to pay the hospital bill.
In my family, there are six members. My father, Anthony; my mother, Sheila; My oldest brother, Lucas; My older sister, Lakin; my second older
brother, Leif; and then there is me, the baby of the family, Alexa. I tease my mom... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I gave her my final report card, you could see the realization that she would have to go through with our deal. Two months later, Simba Kovu
Odom was the newest member of our family. It took us weeks to come up with his name. Every name someone suggested was met with turned up
noses and disdain. Finally, I told my mom that I wanted to name him Simba Mufasa. Shortly, it was changed from Mufasa to Kovu because my mom
could not pronounce it. My friend jokes that he is more like Scar than Simba because he likes to hold his toys over couches and watch them fall.
Nearly two years later, came Remy Firelord Zuko Martin Odom. I know, what a mouthful, huh? My mom came up with the Remy Martin part. I,
obviously came up with the Firelord Zuko part. In my defense, I had just finished binge watching Avatar: The Last Airbender a couple days before we
got him. He is a pomeranian–maltese mix but he looks more like a miniature golden doodle. He is so filled with love that he follows my mom and I
around the house every day.
I live in a black and white house. Growing up, my brothers ' shared one room, my sister and I shared another, and my parents' room was in the
middle. My parents like to change up the house every couple of years to keep things new and fresh. Recently, Lucas and Lakin both moved out,
leaving Leif and I with our own rooms for the first time. I jumped at the chance to redo my room and I

The Spanish Ballad, Or Romancero
The spanish ballad, or romancero, is a form of poetry which, closely linked to the medieval epic, is passed down by word of mouth and open to
interpretation by the performers and audience. The ballad "Romance de Moraima" (or yo me era mora Moraima) is a romancero fronterizo which is
relatively brief, and follows the standard octosyllabic structure. The ballad contains the key feature of assonating units, yet does not strictly rhyme with
one vowel, i.e. 'a' but varies between 'a', 'o', and a paragogic 'e'.
Moraima opens quite abruptly and dramatically, as is the fashion of the romancero. No time is spared in small details; instead the sensational tale
begins immediately. Interestingly, the description is in the past– era– even though one would imagine that she is still the same person, which gives the
impression that something drastic has changed. The first line lands with a punch. The bold statement of her name– В«yo me era mora MoraimaВ« –
identifies the protagonist and throws the listener in. The yo is emphatic, as is the last positioning of Moraima, and together they frame the line to
deliver impact. There is strong alliteration and repetition of the 'mo' sound with Moraima, mora and morilla, all of which contribute to a compelling
description, and draw attention to her islamic beliefs. The choice of the name Moraima, when juxtaposed with mora, emphasises her religious
affiliation which would have been controversial at that time due to the Reconquista. This play on

Song Analysis: We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel Essay
Every song has a story to tell, and some contain hidden stories or lessons, while others are completely blatant. In Billy Joel's song, "We Didn't Start
the Fire," he does not hesitate to be very obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one large fire. I
chose to remediate Joel's song because it spoke to me with historical context. When researching the song, I read a majority of the history behind it and
decided to reflect upon it in a visual picture collage, combining a majority of the elements he mentions with pictures––all circled around a fire in the
middle. I decided to also make red–dyed cupcakes reflecting the fire Joel speaks of and ice them with a flame, yet placing an X over it, ... Show more

Not all collages involve all of those elements, but any one of those can be used by itself. I found "by adding a 'collage' an artist can change the nature
of what he or she is creating, providing a new dimension for a work of art" (Stern 1).
A collage, in my opinion, is a great way to grasp the concept of Joel's song. Collages allow the viewer to see the art from a different point of view,
and "seeing" a song can help the person to actually see what Joel was trying to prove. In this project, I used pictures of almost every historical
perspective he mentioned in his song, and circled all of those elements around a picture of a flame in the middle. I chose to do this because the
flame is the ultimate theme of the song, and all of the events and people he is singing about contribute to the large fire that begins to grow due to
all of these events combined. Along with placing the flame in the center, I matted it on an orange paper, unlike any of the other pictures, to help it
stand out, since it is the main theme of the song. For those who have a difficult time learning without pictures, this is a great way for them to see all
of the aspects of Joel's song together on one page. As well as making a collage, I also made cupcakes to help

My Youngest Daughter 's Wedding Reception
My youngest daughter 's wedding reception was on Sunday. I had to pick up the cake at 10:30 AM that morning, and dutifully I was on my way.
The local talk radio station was doing a Sunday morning garden program. I lasted about 4 minutes with that. My new iPod does not fit my older iPod
setup so well, so I was forced to slip back to frequency modulation for something to listen to. Classic rock was thankfully there to save me from myself.
The first tune played was Billy Idol 's "Rebel Yell." Yeah, I yelled– a lot. I 'm not a huge fan of pretend tough guys from the 1980 's with bleached,
spiked hair and wearing fingerless gloves – ya know for that "I 'm a pretend biker" look?
Following on Billy 's heels was another Billy – Billy Joel. Okay "Piano Man," go find a lounge somewhere. Next up in the hit parade was the Police
"Every Step You Take." The only Police/Sting songs I can stomach are of course "Roxanne," and "Message in a Bottle," and none too much of that.
When Sting finished serenading me I figured I might get lucky and have a goody come my way, but no, it was not to be. Of all the Pink Floyd catalog I
only have one that I really just do not care for – "The Wall." Guess what Floyd song WKLR played at that very moment? Yep . . . "hey, teacher, leave
them kids alone . . . . " Thankfully I turned into my Mom 's neighborhood where the shower was being held. As I pulled in the driveway Dave Gilmore
quit yapping and whatcha think happens then?
That 's right – Led frickin '

Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans Essay
Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans
I have always been interested in the Vietnam War and the results of "the longest war in America." Therefore, I have decided to examine the social
attitudes toward Vietnam veterans. Since I feel so passionately about the way that Vietnam veterans are viewed, the purpose of my paper is to inform
others about the way that the veterans have been criticized and misrepresented. Personally, I hope to gain a further understanding of the attitudes and
views towards Vietnam veterans, especially since my father is a veteran. After reading my paper, I hope that my audience will walk away with more
respect and reverence for those that fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives for their country. My... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, many of the soldiers did meet "on Parris Island" for training and often "passed the hash pipe and played [their] Doors tapes" while in
Southeast Asia. Although this ballad may not be the most appropriate source for my paper, it was still beneficial to examine since it brought out strong
emotions in me about the Vietnam War and has made me even more interested in the subject.
An interesting book I discovered in the library, which is appropriate in regards to this class, is titled AmericanRhetoric and the Vietnam War. The
author writes that Vietnam was America's longest and most controversial war. Thus he adds, "Public controversy gives rise to public rhetoric as
surely as the sparks fly upward, and this may help to explain why the Vietnam War was the stimulus for so much rhetoric, with so much passion, by
so many people, for so many years" (Gustainis xv). The author has devoted sections of the book to rhetoric in support of the war, rhetoric opposed to
the war, and some portrayals of the war that were presented to the nation through the mass media.
Another book that I have discovered is from a different viewpoint and is perhaps more effective. The book, Homecoming, is a history, in the veterans'
own words, of what it was like to return to the United States after the most controversial war in the nation's history. This book embodies both ethos and
pathos since it does not

So there I am in Fry's. It's an electronic store. Sells a bunch of music CDs, and has a nice selection of classic rock DVDs. I noticed pricing on some of

Billy Joel Lyricism
While there are plenty of ways to approach this question, I feel that I should use it to pay tribute to the song that makes me unusually reflective no
matter the context, Billy Joel's Vienna. Indeed, this is my go–to song for those days when my boyfriend is chocolate and my best friend is fuzzy socks.
I started listening to it in the car home from school almost everyday during college application season senior year of high school, and ever since, the
song has never failed to be a tear tugger. Maybe it just brings back bad memories from that time in my life, but Billy Joel's lyricism, no joke, speaks
to me on a spiritual level every time. And so whenever I feel overwhelmed with life, schoolwork, friends, etc. I immediately turn on this song,

No Bruce Springsteen Or Billy Joel Concert
The moment I stepped foot into the doorway, I knew that the night would not turn out the way I had expected. I was stunned in fear by the way
people looked: tattoos, piercings, and hoodies was clearly the norm at the scene. The room was dark, and I felt the stuffy air choke me up. First
impressions are everything, and this one was unlike any other; I was somewhat scared and uneasy. This is how I felt the night my friends introduced a
new idea to go to a metal concert for the first time. This was no Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel concert; it was a new entity that was explicitly more
fierce and threatening that I have ever imagined. Metal concerts are dangerous and unappealing places where people fight, get hurt, and are reckless
with their behavior; attending these concerts have demonstrated how revoking the people and venue can be, and have changed my views on them and
music forever.
I heard a tap on the microphone, a loud squeal, and there I realized that this music was not meant for me. I am used to a nice soothing type of music:
a good rhythm, with calming lyrics. This was the complete opposite. The lead singer was screaming these inaudible words into the microphone as he
banged his head in a way that almost looked painful. The instruments were played recklessly with a force that was incredible: the drummer slammed
the bass, guitarists shredded the chords, and everyone else yelled the lyrics. For a moment I was just still, confused, and stunned by what I was seeing in

Analysis Of Fire By Billy Joel
The song We didn't start the fire is about tragic things that happened in the past and still going on today in the real world. Its things we tried to
fight and keep from happening but no matter how hard we tried to fight it the fire kept burning. Billy joel wants to help young people realize that
there are conflicts in the past that might help workout the present. That may be why he somewhat curiously included George in the song. The
professor stated Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Joel phrased it a bit less poetically no matter how much you try
he said the world is going to be a mess. All you can do is the best you can and maybe make the world immediately around you a better place.we are

The moment I was informed about this oral history report, only one person came to my mind when deciding who to compose this project about. This
person was my grandfather. He was an inspiration in my life. This project has given me the opportunity to reflect back onto my grandfather's stories

We Didn T Start The Fire
In "We Didn't Start The Fire" Billy Joel is talking about the important events though his childhood, telling kids that wasn't there telling them what
happened. Showing how some of the world reacted to the events. All the events that happened In "We Didn't Start The Fire", really influenced the

In "We Didn't Start The Fire" Billy Joel's is telling the younger generation their lesson in history that people didn't by not putting the blame on any
particular person, place, or thing. In the song he says "we didn't start the fire it was always burning it was always burning to the worlds being, but we
did ignite on trying to fight". Saying that we made the fire worse by trying fight it. But he's also saying that he hopes that we make it better
throughout time with the younger generations. With also telling about very important people also. Like Richard Nixon, Malcolm X, and Marilyn

An Analysis Of Billy Joel's Song We Didn T Start The Fire
Billy Joel in his song "We Didn't Start The Fire" claims that the current generation, as of the time the song was written, did not, in fact, start the fire.
Thought the song many events are listed until the chorus comes along again to remind the listener the they did not start the fire. The "fire" in this song
that Billy Joel speaks of are crazy and shocking events in the world not only being generally harmful to the public but events that changed how people
viewed things. The song's repetition of not starting the fire, the lengthy lines used for verses that completely list events, and the listing of events as
opposed to common verses in an average song shows how they did not start the fire and the fire had been going on for generations and ... Show more

With the song being so different from an average song, it makes the song feel filled in the verses, with all of the events that he provides, in the
short time that the song plays. The song's verses are entirely evidence for Billy Joel's claim that the fire had not been started by him or his group
and with so many examples, there is no time to put reasoning behind it but rather connect the ideas to the major point, being the chorus. With so
many examples one after another as the song continues through its verses Billy Joel is listing as many examples as he can to prove the point of the
fire having been already started. As he lists these events he is pushing forward so many examples against the argument without taking any look at
another side which shows how he is not only annoyed by the claim that he did start the fire but also how he wants to push his side. With so much
evidence being thrown at the listener it's impossible to refute what he is saying. His strange verses being entirely made up of listed evidence towards
his claim, it supports his argument in a strange and uncharacteristic way for an average

Music And Its Effects On The Digital Age
Billy Joel, Nickelback, Fifty Shades of Grey and Other Causalities of Schlock
Music Professor explores the social dynamic of taste–shaming in the digital age.
In some form or another, we've all been exposed to musical taste shaming.
If you're a fan of the Eagles, Rush, Drake, or god help your soul, are passionate about the music of Nickelback, you've certainly received your share of
barbs. As agents in what many have coined as "the age of hipsterism," none of us are safe from the smug judgment of those who perceive their own
musical tastes as a cut–above the rest of us rubes.
Of course, hipsterism is just another term for yet another "age" that mimics the same social and cultural elitist behaviours that have been occurring
for centuries. Pomposity has always existed and generally speaking, it is a personality trait of someone who is lacking a degree of authentic social
awareness. I mean, surely we can agree that it's myopic to judge someone's character based on their musical preferences!
Although taste shaming is nothing new, shaming in today's digital world can have more profound consequences than ever before. Through social

Billy Joel Influence
William Martin Joel, who's known by his stage name as Billy Joel, the piano man, is a composer, musician, and pianist who started his music career in
1965. Billy Joel's music style has been influenced by many elements from his upbringing in the New York suburbs to small town culture to world
events. Throughout his music style, the melodies are unpretentious and are telling the stories of the working–class of America. Joel speaks about the
struggles that the American people have in songs like "Allentown" and about the culture in the suburban with the song, "Only the Good Die Young".
Billy Joel is an American icon because he started at the bottom and worked himself up to the top while remembering where he came from. Joel is a

William Martin Joel was born in New York City on May 9th, 1949 but his family would soon move to the suburb of Levittown, New York, where
he lived during his childhood and a portion of his young adult years. When living in the suburbs, his father returned to Europe and left Billy's
mother to struggle rising two children on a secretary's wages which caused finance issue for the family. Billy Joel's early years in the suburbs
greatly influence his music because of his family's low income, Billy would read any books he could find, especially history books. In an interview
with the Rolling Stones, Billy mentions that since his family's tv was broken and didn't have money to get it fix he would read books, which would
later in life help give him inspiration when writing lyrics. "I read. I read everything. I used to read history books like they were novels–anything I
could get my hands on" (Marsh). While living in the suburbs, Joel develop his perspective on the culture of the suburbs and would later use that
perspective to write the lyrics of "Only the Good Die Young". Multiple time Joel has been known to greatly express his rejection towards the suburban
culture, yet he still uses it in his music which strengths his position as an American icon. Joel's negative option of the

Why I Learned The Piano
As a thirteen–year–old I could only watch game shows for so long, and that day I could not take anymore. I couldn 't sit still and needed to hear more
than Steve Harvey and the Family Feud theme song, so I wandered into her sitting room that always felt a little warmer than the rest of the house.
Sometimes I would sit on the couch by the window and feel the sun's heat hit my face and watch the cars drive by. Sometimes I played with her giant
record player, but vases covered it that day, so I went to her oldpiano. Dust covered sheet music and instruction books filled the bench of the piano. I
flipped through them and found songs I knew, and I became determined. That day I decided I wanted to learn the piano.Every day at the same time
I would go in her sitting room and practice, and every day she would listen and tell me how good a job I was doing. Some days she would even
come play with me. Every day of that summer looked exactly the same: sleep in the morning on the couch, have lunch with my mom, and play piano
in the afternoon. It did change on some days when my grandmother would take me to the Baskin Robins down the street, and we'd get ice cream, but
I'd always practice when we got back. I convinced myself I would become a great pianist, but my left hand never did anything. It never moved the
same way my right hand did, but my grandmother never said anything about it, she always encouraged me, no matter how bad my playing actually
sounded.
I lost my drive for piano

Song Review: Piano Man By Billy Joel
Throughout the years, Billy Joel has been an influential singer; however, his most successful song would be Piano Man. This song tells the story of a
small town, pub pianist who uses is music to cheer up the local patrons. While it is somewhat of a sober song I tells a great story.
The story begins on a cold winter night at the local bar, most of the local patrons have either gone home or have drank a little too much. As I sat at
the counter, deciding what to play next, I notice that the man sitting next to me seemed to have started on his third or fourth glass; however, when I
looked at my watch to check the time, he asked me, "Son, would you mind playing a song that I knew a long time ago when I was younger, but as you
can see time has gotten ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now this wasn't a side of John that I had seen before. Usually, John is the one who cheers everyone up whether it be with a quick joke or a short
story, but something was different about him, "You know Bill, I believe that I could be a movie star if I could just get out of this bar; in fact,
Paul's a real estate novelist though he's busy enough that he doesn't have time for a wife. Although, I heard recently that he's been talking to
Davy, but he joined the Navy here recently and probably won't be getting out for a while. Although the biggest surprise of them is the waitress that
used to work here. She's been practicing politics though I'm not sure which branch." He said. As he was saying all this and bragging on how lucky
I am, I kept thinking about the fact that even though they are all alone, they share that experience, but I am alone in this career. The following
Saturday the crowd at the bar was larger, and the manger came up to greet me as he knew that I was the reason the crowd came. "Hope you're ready
since this will probably be your biggest show this year." He said. Of course, I knew he was right, but for some odd reason tonight felt different than all
the others. I sat down at the piano

Analysis Of The Song ' Africa ' By Toto Essay
Personally, one of my all–time favorite songs is "Africa" by Toto, which is featured on his self–titled and fourth album Toto: IV. This song is one of my
favorites because it brings me a sense of nostalgia as I used to listen to this song all of the time as a child. Now, despite there being no actual
reason behind liking the song besides its nostalgic effects, I absolutely adore it, and every time this song comes on, I get super excited and sing
along no matter where I am. I could be out in public, which has happened before, and I will immediately stop when "Africa" comes on and begin to
sing the song at the top of my lungs because it is just so catchy and it brings me back to the good old days when things were much simpler. One
specific interpretation of the song that I believe could be taken to heart and represent me is that the song is actually about cleansing (i.e. the rain)
and going back to the origins of life, or in this case Africa, to where life began for this man so that he could start over and get away from the world
for a while. This, I feel, represents me in that sometimes I wish I could get away from the world and technology for a bit too, and like I addressed
earlier go back to much simpler times, but that's just one perspective of the song as it has been interpreted in many different ways. Now another song
that I love, which has similar effects to "Africa" is "We Didn't Start the Fire" byBilly Joel, which is featured on his album Storm Front. This song,

The Billy Joel
Billy Joel is one of the best selling solo artists of all time in the United States. Amongst his most popular songs are "Piano Man," "We Didn't Start the
Fire" and "She's Always a Woman," all with good reason. Having written a plethora of memorable songs that could easily be added to the soundtrack
of our lives, Billy Joel's undoubtedly one of the most talented musicians and songwriters of all time.
The musical legend was born William Martin Joel on May 9, 1949 to Howard and Rosalind Joel. He grew up in the suburb of Hicksville, New
York, in a rather musical home. His father was a classically trained pianist while his mother would sing along to songs. Billy tried his luck with the
piano too, pounding on the keys at a very young age until his mother took him to take piano lessons at age 4. It wasn't long before he took to it, and
eventually he became so skilled that he could have been considered a professional by the time he was a teenager.
Billy Joel joined a total of 3 bands before becoming a solo artist. The first group he joined was called the Echoes, a cover band that quickly gained
popularity and would later be known as the Lost Souls. While enjoying the success of his first band, Billy Joel saw the Beatles' iconic performance
on the Ed Sullivan Show and was inspired to pursue a career as a professional musician. As a result, he dropped out of high school at age 17 and
devoted his life to a musical career.
After leaving the Echoes, Joel would would go on to join two

Analysis Of DonT Growing Up Too Fast
Don't Grow Up Too Fast
Growing up doesn't need to be difficult, but it does require sincerity and honesty. This quote exemplifies my opinion of this year quite well. "I've found
that growing up means being honest. About what I want. What I need. What I feel. Who I am." The song Vienna byBilly Joel is about growing up and
worrying about what the future holds. During my 8th grade, I found myself wallowing in what the future would bring and how to grow up faster, but
that resulted in wanting to take back what I had been rushing through and trying to enjoy it.
The future can be an large focus of middle school students, and when 8th grade comes around and the excitement of sign ups and clubs to join swims
through the air, anyone can become incredibly stressed out. My whole life has been the ongoing question of "what's next?", and whether that nervosity
was about years or minutes ahead it always had a place in my head. This worry and wonder mustered up quite a bit more during high school sign ups,
and I began to search for justification in others about my own future. In the song Vienna, Billy Joel sings "You got your passion. You got your pride
but don't you know that only fools are satisfied?". This portrays the fact that during 8th grade, I knew what I want, but I didn't know how to fulfill my
goals while making others happy. I worried that even if I did what I wanted, the outcome would consist of unhappy people and an unfulfilled goal.
Though this worry consumed much of my

We Didn 't Start The Fire, By Billy Joel
There is no denying that over a multitude of years, music has inevitably found ways to challenge power and power structures around the world.
Music has found a way to use not only lyrics, but also the gender of musicians and genres of music to oppose powerful entities. Throughout music 's
long lived history, lyrics have been the most obvious example of musical oppositions to power. Music and songs have been created to protest wars,
raise awareness to violence, express pride in one 's race and culture, and challenge political forums, only to name a few examples. For example,
"We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel was created to oppose United States involvement in the Vietnam War, along with raising awareness of both
drug and race problems in America. Furthermore, lyrics are a way in which an artist or composer can specifically tailor a message to explicitly state
their take on a given institution or outlet of power. On the other hand, lyrics have also been used in a coded fashion to indirectly attack structures of
power rather than explicitly attacking structure of power, which has been proven useful in times of serious civil oppression. Lyrics tell a story, and
historically singers and songwriters have used them in a multitude of ways to construct a variety of messages that have challenged societal norms and
structures of power.
Additionally, there is no denying that the gender of the composer or artist plays a critical role in challenging power dynamics. Female artists

Analysis Of The Song We Didn 'T Start The Fire' By Billy Joel
Along with We didn't Start The Fire, Billy Joel wrote an additional Cold War piece, Leningrad. This song focusses around a Russian circus clown,
Viktor, and the comparison between Viktor (Soviet Union) and Billy Joel (United States) and their Cold War experiences. Joel compares Viktor to
many other Russian children who "never saw their father anymore" (Joel, 1989) and "drank his vodka straight" (Joel, 1989) in order to wash down
the pain of the war. The death of the children's' fathers is represented in the music video for Leningrad with footage of young children crying. Viktor's
childhood was compared to his own in which he was "a cold war kid in McCarthy time" (Joel, 1989) and feared the Cuban Missile Crisis. Joel refers to

How Did Billy Joel's Song 'We Didn T Start The Fire'
American composer and pianist Billy Joel wrote the song "We Didn't Start the Fire" regarding the important events that occurred in the twentieth
century. Joel was born in 1949 after World War II. Joel said that the meaning behind "We Didn't Start the Fire" was to inform his audience that all
the events that he spoke about in this song were not his generation's fault, but the fault of their predecessors. The song became a best seller and a
great success and in 1989 it was nominated for a Grammy Award. One of the most famous lyrics in the song is "JFK, blown away, what else do I have
to say". This event alluded to the events that occurred at the time of the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, President John F.
Kennedy (Bishop 175). The tragic news spread around the United States and the whole country was in shock. Up until that time, the American people

We Didn T Start The Fire, By Billy Joel
In the song We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel, change is referred to as 'fire' that has been around 'since the world's been turning.' What he doesn't
say, however, is how to deal with these 'fires.' The general attitude that people take towards change is negative, though I would argue that anychange
will have positive and negative repercussions, and the way you respond to this change is what has lasting effects.
For instance, the recent legalization of gay marriage. The act of allowing people of the same sex to marry, in itself, isn't much of an issue. It doesn't
physically or mentally harm anyone, it doesn't benefit or inhibit any specific organizations, it isn't promoting any sort of hate message or targeting
anyone. Yet, it was a

Analysis Of The Song This Is The Time Song By Billy Joel
I chose the song This Is The Time sang by Billy Joel. I picked this song because a lot of people say that your middle school experience is very
important to remember. It's not only middle school but also your whole school experience. But in particular this song represents my 8th grade year.
This year has been really great, probably my best year at MME I really want to remember all of my new friends and almost everything that has
happened this year. A lyric in the song is "This is the time to remember, cause it will not last forever". Everyone wants to hold onto memories weather
it's from school or not, there is a lyric in the song that explains you should hold onto your memories no matter what they are. The lyric is "these are the
days to hold onto, cause we won't although we want to". The lyrics also means that no matter how hard you try you may not remember everything that

let go of it or that maybe it's something that you do kind of want to keep that memory with you. This relates to my 8th grade experience, because I do
have some memories that I do want to remember and forget. Some of them are funny and embarrassing and others are just embarrassing. Having those

America: Diverse in Nature, Belief and Ideology
Concerning America today, many people have a set of "cardboard cut–out" traits that they tack onto American citizens, and what it means to be an
American. These traits are typically very broad, and simplistic, and in many cases, are relics of the 50's. The truth, however, is quite different. Although
some people try to attach universal traits to Americans, citizens of this country are very diverse in nature, belief, and ideology. I've identified four
characteristics most commonly associated with being an "American". First, he believes in the American dream, owning a home and achieving
happiness through material goods. Second, he is patriotic, supporting his country through wars and turmoil. Third, he believes in freedom, and that

Is it just the privilege to use bank 1 or bank 2? Or is right to speak your word no matter what it may contain? The average American uses his freedom
of choice, and recognizes his freedom of speech and sovereignty, and attaches them to what makes him an American. In this painting, a single man is
shown standing valiantly speaking, what is inferred to be, his beliefs, and all those around him are listening intently. This painting is a great example
of what freedom of speech is perceived to be. In reality, recent politics have been tainting the meaning of the word. It has been bent, molded, and forged
into a sword with which to cut through dissent and protest, their argument vindicated with that word, whose pure history has been blemished. In an
article from "Freedom Daily", it is said, "Bush freedom meant 'free speech zones' where demonstrators were quarantined," "Bush freedom meant
allowing the National Security Agency to vacuum up Americans' email without a warrant," and "Bush freedom meant entitling the Justice Department
to round up the names of book buyers and library users under the USA PATRIOT Act (Bovard)." According to Bovard, our freedoms have been
choked and restrained, in the name of– freedom? Yet we're all still American, aren't we? Voting is a citizen's right, privilege, and responsibility. As
Americans, are we obligated to vote? Some would say that, "with freedom comes obligation, with liberty comes duty," and some would

Billy Joel is an artist that brings my memories back. When my older brother was 12 years, he has stayed on Long Island as an exchange student.
When he came back home in Japan from the United States, he told me that there was an awesome singer named Billy Joel in the U.S., and he started
singing his songs while playing the piano. He had what it takes to play the piano once listening to a song. For me, an 8–year–old girl, my brother who
could sing cool songs while playing the piano looked snazzy. Since then my brother and I used to sing his songs again and again. I have long been a

Descriptive Essay About Billy Joel
People say there are moments that will stick with you no matter how much time has passed. I am positive this statement is true for the Billy Joel
Concert that I attended at Wrigley Field in Chicago on August 11th. The tickets were a gift given to me by my parents for my Birthday back in
January. They were hidden in a box with a stack of about 50 manilla envelopes which my parents found very funny. I couldn't believe my eyes
when I finally found the tickets, I had never been to a concert before, unless you count seeing the Perry Choir and Band, so there was much
anticipation. The seats my parents and I had at Wrigley field were not great. The steps were so high that it felt like we had climbed Mount Everest
and the seats were so close together that you couldn't move without elbowing your neighbor, but that didn't matter as Billy started to play Miami
2017. The first notes that Billy played rocked my core and actually made my eyes water not because Miami 2017 is a beautiful ballad but because it
brought me into reality. It finally hit me that I was in Chicago watching my favorite singer belting out lyrics I had listened to hundreds of times live
instead of just watching YouTube videos and listening to my Spotify playlist.Billy Joel truly lives up to his nickname "The Entertainer" even at 68. He
was so much fun to watch. Occasionally he would throw out what he called "a fielder's choice. Two options were put forth and the audience cheered

As he prepared to jump into the water to tube, David's feet slipped out from under him, and he fell into the water, hitting the back of his head and

Compare And Contrast The Life Of Boy And Dunny

  • 1. Compare And Contrast The Life Of Boy And Dunny TEXT SAYSI/WE SAY 1.Compare and contrast the lives of Boy and Dunny as reported in this chapter. Does this explain their ambivalent relationship? Dunstan Hannah: (108) Dunny bought a suit with only 24 dollars and he wore a shirt twice a week and changed his underwear once, shows his character is dull and doesn't care about many or materialistic things. Farzad: This reflects their childhood "Once, temporarily envious of Boy, I bought a silk shirt and paid nine dollars for it.", shows that Dunny is still jealous of Percy even all these years after. Michelle: "I recognize now that my limp was always worse when I envied Boy". Dunny has a disability, and wants the respect from others just like how they give it to Boy (113). "Diana. I often yearned for her" (115), at this point Dunny feel jealous of Boy that he is going out with so many girls, while Dunstan isn't and that is why he is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dempster used to give away belongings (vase and vegetables) which can be seen as a caring and giving characteristic trait which matches the definition of a fool–saint as she wasn't purposely doing it to help others but without a logic or to just make herself content. Danat: What she was doing seemed like "madness" in front of Father Regan's eyes. Keren: A fool–saint does not amount to anything, so as we can see after that even after doing all these good deeds she is not amounting to anything as her condition is worse along with her family issues. A fool–saint's bad luck rubs on people and just like that her bad luck rubs on her husband (getting sick and dying) and her son (who ran to the circus). Wajeeha: It also rubbed on Dunny's life since unlike Percy his life was dull and boring. But, whatever Mary did it seemed she wasn't a saint but had a saint–like behaviour but definitely wasn't foolish since whatever she did, she probably didn't do with a proper intend, but it turned out to something good which relates to the "accidental" theme of her doing these ... • 2. Descriptive Essay About My Family On October 20, 2000 I was brought into the world 1:38 in the morning at Hurley Hospital. I was around 8lbs. My mother likes to tell my siblings and I that she had all of our names planned ever since she was a little girl. She ended up naming me Alexa Rae Odom. She says the she named me after the singer Billy Joel's daughter, Alexa Ray Joel. My mother also like to tell me that I interrupted the poker game she was winning just before she went into labor. She says that we could used that money to pay the hospital bill. In my family, there are six members. My father, Anthony; my mother, Sheila; My oldest brother, Lucas; My older sister, Lakin; my second older brother, Leif; and then there is me, the baby of the family, Alexa. I tease my mom... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I gave her my final report card, you could see the realization that she would have to go through with our deal. Two months later, Simba Kovu Odom was the newest member of our family. It took us weeks to come up with his name. Every name someone suggested was met with turned up noses and disdain. Finally, I told my mom that I wanted to name him Simba Mufasa. Shortly, it was changed from Mufasa to Kovu because my mom could not pronounce it. My friend jokes that he is more like Scar than Simba because he likes to hold his toys over couches and watch them fall. Nearly two years later, came Remy Firelord Zuko Martin Odom. I know, what a mouthful, huh? My mom came up with the Remy Martin part. I, obviously came up with the Firelord Zuko part. In my defense, I had just finished binge watching Avatar: The Last Airbender a couple days before we got him. He is a pomeranian–maltese mix but he looks more like a miniature golden doodle. He is so filled with love that he follows my mom and I around the house every day. I live in a black and white house. Growing up, my brothers ' shared one room, my sister and I shared another, and my parents' room was in the middle. My parents like to change up the house every couple of years to keep things new and fresh. Recently, Lucas and Lakin both moved out, leaving Leif and I with our own rooms for the first time. I jumped at the chance to redo my room and I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Spanish Ballad, Or Romancero The spanish ballad, or romancero, is a form of poetry which, closely linked to the medieval epic, is passed down by word of mouth and open to interpretation by the performers and audience. The ballad "Romance de Moraima" (or yo me era mora Moraima) is a romancero fronterizo which is relatively brief, and follows the standard octosyllabic structure. The ballad contains the key feature of assonating units, yet does not strictly rhyme with one vowel, i.e. 'a' but varies between 'a', 'o', and a paragogic 'e'. Moraima opens quite abruptly and dramatically, as is the fashion of the romancero. No time is spared in small details; instead the sensational tale begins immediately. Interestingly, the description is in the past– era– even though one would imagine that she is still the same person, which gives the impression that something drastic has changed. The first line lands with a punch. The bold statement of her name– В«yo me era mora MoraimaВ« – identifies the protagonist and throws the listener in. The yo is emphatic, as is the last positioning of Moraima, and together they frame the line to deliver impact. There is strong alliteration and repetition of the 'mo' sound with Moraima, mora and morilla, all of which contribute to a compelling description, and draw attention to her islamic beliefs. The choice of the name Moraima, when juxtaposed with mora, emphasises her religious affiliation which would have been controversial at that time due to the Reconquista. This play on ... • 4. Song Analysis: We Didn’t Start the Fire by Billy Joel Essay Every song has a story to tell, and some contain hidden stories or lessons, while others are completely blatant. In Billy Joel's song, "We Didn't Start the Fire," he does not hesitate to be very obvious with what he tries to prove, which is how all of the events in his song contribute to one large fire. I chose to remediate Joel's song because it spoke to me with historical context. When researching the song, I read a majority of the history behind it and decided to reflect upon it in a visual picture collage, combining a majority of the elements he mentions with pictures––all circled around a fire in the middle. I decided to also make red–dyed cupcakes reflecting the fire Joel speaks of and ice them with a flame, yet placing an X over it, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not all collages involve all of those elements, but any one of those can be used by itself. I found "by adding a 'collage' an artist can change the nature of what he or she is creating, providing a new dimension for a work of art" (Stern 1). A collage, in my opinion, is a great way to grasp the concept of Joel's song. Collages allow the viewer to see the art from a different point of view, and "seeing" a song can help the person to actually see what Joel was trying to prove. In this project, I used pictures of almost every historical perspective he mentioned in his song, and circled all of those elements around a picture of a flame in the middle. I chose to do this because the flame is the ultimate theme of the song, and all of the events and people he is singing about contribute to the large fire that begins to grow due to all of these events combined. Along with placing the flame in the center, I matted it on an orange paper, unlike any of the other pictures, to help it stand out, since it is the main theme of the song. For those who have a difficult time learning without pictures, this is a great way for them to see all of the aspects of Joel's song together on one page. As well as making a collage, I also made cupcakes to help ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. My Youngest Daughter 's Wedding Reception My youngest daughter 's wedding reception was on Sunday. I had to pick up the cake at 10:30 AM that morning, and dutifully I was on my way. The local talk radio station was doing a Sunday morning garden program. I lasted about 4 minutes with that. My new iPod does not fit my older iPod setup so well, so I was forced to slip back to frequency modulation for something to listen to. Classic rock was thankfully there to save me from myself. The first tune played was Billy Idol 's "Rebel Yell." Yeah, I yelled– a lot. I 'm not a huge fan of pretend tough guys from the 1980 's with bleached, spiked hair and wearing fingerless gloves – ya know for that "I 'm a pretend biker" look? Following on Billy 's heels was another Billy – Billy Joel. Okay "Piano Man," go find a lounge somewhere. Next up in the hit parade was the Police "Every Step You Take." The only Police/Sting songs I can stomach are of course "Roxanne," and "Message in a Bottle," and none too much of that. When Sting finished serenading me I figured I might get lucky and have a goody come my way, but no, it was not to be. Of all the Pink Floyd catalog I only have one that I really just do not care for – "The Wall." Guess what Floyd song WKLR played at that very moment? Yep . . . "hey, teacher, leave them kids alone . . . . " Thankfully I turned into my Mom 's neighborhood where the shower was being held. • 7. Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans Essay Social Attitudes Toward Vietnam Veterans I have always been interested in the Vietnam War and the results of "the longest war in America." Therefore, I have decided to examine the social attitudes toward Vietnam veterans. Since I feel so passionately about the way that Vietnam veterans are viewed, the purpose of my paper is to inform others about the way that the veterans have been criticized and misrepresented. Personally, I hope to gain a further understanding of the attitudes and views towards Vietnam veterans, especially since my father is a veteran. After reading my paper, I hope that my audience will walk away with more respect and reverence for those that fought in the Vietnam War and gave their lives for their country. My... For example, many of the soldiers did meet "on Parris Island" for training and often "passed the hash pipe and played [their] Doors tapes" while in Southeast Asia. Although this ballad may not be the most appropriate source for my paper, it was still beneficial to examine since it brought out strong emotions in me about the Vietnam War and has made me even more interested in the subject. An interesting book I discovered in the library, which is appropriate in regards to this class, is titled AmericanRhetoric and the Vietnam War. The author writes that Vietnam was America's longest and most controversial war. Thus he adds, "Public controversy gives rise to public rhetoric as surely as the sparks fly upward, and this may help to explain why the Vietnam War was the stimulus for so much rhetoric, with so much passion, by so many people, for so many years" (Gustainis xv). The author has devoted sections of the book to rhetoric in support of the war, rhetoric opposed to the war, and some portrayals of the war that were presented to the nation through the mass media. Another book that I have discovered is from a different viewpoint and is perhaps more effective. The book, Homecoming, is a history, in the veterans' own words, of what it was like to return to the United States after the most controversial war in the nation's history. This book embodies both ethos and pathos since it does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What I'm referring to is for music CDs, and movie_music DVDs. I like finding stuff for the cheap. Sales are always awesome. What consumer don't like them? A timing thing, but so is winning the lottery. When it happens, it happens. I'll buy previously owned as long as it's in good condition. So I buy new, or used. So there I am in Fry's. It's an electronic store. Sells a bunch of music CDs, and has a nice selection of classic rock DVDs. I noticed pricing on some of this stuff recently, has come down some. Billy Joel Lyricism While there are plenty of ways to approach this question, I feel that I should use it to pay tribute to the song that makes me unusually reflective no matter the context, Billy Joel's Vienna. Indeed, this is my go–to song for those days when my boyfriend is chocolate and my best friend is fuzzy socks. I started listening to it in the car home from school almost everyday during college application season senior year of high school, and ever since, the song has never failed to be a tear tugger. Maybe it just brings back bad memories from that time in my life, but Billy Joel's lyricism, no joke, speaks to me on a spiritual level every time. Tori's smelliness was never a problem, until the day her owner dropped her off at Doggy Daycare. It was her first day at a new place, and Tori could not wait to play outside with the other dogs. She sprinted inside and ran towards a table full of goldendoodle puppies. Barking excitedly, she exclaimed: "Hey everybody! It's my first day here, and I'm super excited to play with you guys! • 12. No Bruce Springsteen Or Billy Joel Concert The moment I stepped foot into the doorway, I knew that the night would not turn out the way I had expected. I was stunned in fear by the way people looked: tattoos, piercings, and hoodies was clearly the norm at the scene. The room was dark, and I felt the stuffy air choke me up. First impressions are everything, and this one was unlike any other; I was somewhat scared and uneasy. This is how I felt the night my friends introduced a new idea to go to a metal concert for the first time. This was no Bruce Springsteen or Billy Joel concert; it was a new entity that was explicitly more fierce and threatening that I have ever imagined. Metal concerts are dangerous and unappealing places where people fight, get hurt, and are reckless with their behavior; attending these concerts have demonstrated how revoking the people and venue can be, and have changed my views on them and music forever. I heard a tap on the microphone, a loud squeal, and there I realized that this music was not meant for me. I am used to a nice soothing type of music: a good rhythm, with calming lyrics. This was the complete opposite. The lead singer was screaming these inaudible words into the microphone as he banged his head in a way that almost looked painful. The instruments were played recklessly with a force that was incredible: the drummer slammed the bass, guitarists shredded the chords, and everyone else yelled the lyrics. The ballad's strict importance is a snide reaction towards the general population who look down on the speaker. To the storyteller, the sonnet figuratively depicts her quality to dependably survive the fight against individuals' feedback of her and her predecessors. All around, this ballad conveys the message of the human's fantastic quality and capacity to defeat hurt. The reiteration of "I ascend" all through the whole sonnet communicates the storyteller's assurance to conquer any hindrances, giving the ballad a feeling of quality. The allegory utilized as a part of the sonnet, which significantly adds to its importance is, "I am a dark sea" (33). Tori would dig in the mud, chew on her owner's shoes, and roll in the trash, but she would not step foot in a tub. Do you mind if I sit here?" "Ew! Ew! Ew!" the goldendoodles replied, "What could be that disgusting smell?" They turned towards Tori and quickly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sometimes I would sit on the couch by the window and feel the sun's heat hit my face and watch the cars drive by. Sometimes I played with her giant record player, but vases covered it that day, so I went to her oldpiano. Dust covered sheet music and instruction books filled the bench of the piano. I flipped through them and found songs I knew, and I became determined. That day I decided I wanted to learn the piano.Every day at the same time I would go in her sitting room and practice, and every day she would listen and tell me how good a job I was doing. Some days she would even come play with me. Every day of that summer looked exactly the same: sleep in the morning on the couch, have lunch with my mom, and play piano in the afternoon. It did change on some days when my grandmother would take me to the Baskin Robins down the street, and we'd get ice cream, but I'd always practice when we got back. This song is one of my favorites because it brings me a sense of nostalgia as I used to listen to this song all of the time as a child. Now, despite there being no actual reason behind liking the song besides its nostalgic effects, I absolutely adore it, and every time this song comes on, I get super excited and sing along no matter where I am. I could be out in public, which has happened before, and I will immediately stop when "Africa" comes on and begin to sing the song at the top of my lungs because it is just so catchy and it brings me back to the good old days when things were much simpler. One specific interpretation of the song that I believe could be taken to heart and represent me is that the song is actually about cleansing (i.e. the rain) and going back to the origins of life, or in this case Africa, to where life began for this man so that he could start over and get away from the world for a while. This, I feel, represents me in that sometimes I wish I could get away from the world and technology for a bit too, and like I addressed earlier go back to much simpler times, but that's just one perspective of the song as it has been interpreted in many different ways. Music has found a way to use not only lyrics, but also the gender of musicians and genres of music to oppose powerful entities. Throughout music 's long lived history, lyrics have been the most obvious example of musical oppositions to power. Music and songs have been created to protest wars, raise awareness to violence, express pride in one 's race and culture, and challenge political forums, only to name a few examples. For example, "We Didn't Start the Fire" by Billy Joel was created to oppose United States involvement in the Vietnam War, along with raising awareness of both drug and race problems in America. Furthermore, lyrics are a way in which an artist or composer can specifically tailor a message to explicitly state their take on a given institution or outlet of power. On the other hand, lyrics have also been used in a coded fashion to indirectly attack structures of power rather than explicitly attacking structure of power, which has been proven useful in times of serious civil oppression. Lyrics tell a story, and historically singers and songwriters have used them in a multitude of ways to construct a variety of messages that have challenged societal norms and structures of power. It has been bent, molded, and forged into a sword with which to cut through dissent and protest, their argument vindicated with that word, whose pure history has been blemished. In an article from "Freedom Daily", it is said, "Bush freedom meant 'free speech zones' where demonstrators were quarantined," "Bush freedom meant allowing the National Security Agency to vacuum up Americans' email without a warrant," and "Bush freedom meant entitling the Justice Department to round up the names of book buyers and library users under the USA PATRIOT Act (Bovard)." According to Bovard, our freedoms have been choked and restrained, in the name of– freedom? Yet we're all still American, aren't we? Voting is a citizen's right, privilege, and responsibility. As Americans, are we obligated to vote? Some would say that, "with freedom comes obligation, with liberty comes duty," and some would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Billy Joel Billy Joel is an artist that brings my memories back. When my older brother was 12 years, he has stayed on Long Island as an exchange student. When he came back home in Japan from the United States, he told me that there was an awesome singer named Billy Joel in the U.S., and he started singing his songs while playing the piano. He had what it takes to play the piano once listening to a song. For me, an 8–year–old girl, my brother who could sing cool songs while playing the piano looked snazzy. Since then my brother and I used to sing his songs again and again. I have long been a fan of Billy Joel since my brother brought Billy Joel to me. If he had held a concert at the Rip City, I had wanted to attend his concert to listen to old songs I had sung in tune with his piano. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that they delighted in Joel's words "tonight I'm going to do the old stuff." Joel gave the audience what they want, and his final tour turned out to be a great success. In an article "TAKE IT FROM BILLY JOEL," the author points out "the same is true for a speaker." While an entertainer or communicator must feel passionate about their message, that message should be synchronized with the audience's psyche and desire. To identify the audience is a key to effective communication. Effective use of audience–centered approach Billy Joel is not only an extraordinary entertainer but also a great communicator in the terms of the fact he sent his message in a way that was meaningful to the audience. He created a friendly atmosphere to make jokes about the audience. He got his audience hooked by identifying his audience's expectations, living, ages, and norms. Adopting an audience–centered ... • 37. Billy Joel Personality Disorder Researchers need to go more in depth with this disorder, because, if those with DID are not properly cared for then the people surrounding them could be seriously harmed. Saks states: "Consider State v. Moore, in her Billy Joel personality, held hostage and terrorized a group of children and was eventually complicit in the beating to death of one. But Marie Moore personality was no stranger to the crime. She would place phone calls to herself pretending it was Billy Joel calling the children's daily instruction and discipline. And she deflected the police when the under suspicion." (Saks). This case is a prime example of the horrific incidents that can occur and will continue to occur if research is not taken seriously within this disorder. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Descriptive Essay About Billy Joel People say there are moments that will stick with you no matter how much time has passed. I am positive this statement is true for the Billy Joel Concert that I attended at Wrigley Field in Chicago on August 11th. The tickets were a gift given to me by my parents for my Birthday back in January. They were hidden in a box with a stack of about 50 manilla envelopes which my parents found very funny. I couldn't believe my eyes when I finally found the tickets, I had never been to a concert before, unless you count seeing the Perry Choir and Band, so there was much anticipation. The seats my parents and I had at Wrigley field were not great. The steps were so high that it felt like we had climbed Mount Everest and the seats were so close together that you couldn't move without elbowing your neighbor, but that didn't matter as Billy started to play Miami 2017. The first notes that Billy played rocked my core and actually made my eyes water not because Miami 2017 is a beautiful ballad but because it brought me into reality. It finally hit me that I was in Chicago watching my favorite singer belting out lyrics I had listened to hundreds of times live instead of just watching YouTube videos and listening to my Spotify playlist.Billy Joel truly lives up to his nickname "The Entertainer" even at 68. He was so much fun to watch. Occasionally he would throw out what he called "a fielder's choice. Two options were put forth and the audience cheered for which one they wanted to ... Infuriated when Harry Reid is re–elected during the 2010 fall election, the Republican National Committee decides to take matters into its own hands. In 2011, the House of Representatives passes a new "Freedom isn't Free Act" that requires that anyone who wants to vote in the 2012 presidential election must prove that they paid at least $200 in federal income tax in the past year, including people aged 18 (who typically are deducted on their parents' returns and do not pay income tax). Anyone who received the "earned income credit" is barred from voting unless they return the payment from the government. Proof of payment of the tax can be made by showing a copy... As he prepared to jump into the water to tube, David's feet slipped out from under him, and he fell into the water, hitting the back of his head and neck on the ladder, knocking him out cold. He slipped under the water and drowned. The other members of the party didn't notice his absence until a passing barge pilot got their attention. He had seen the entire thing through his binoculars; he had been watching Melissa and her friend Angela (who were in bathing suits). Despite an immediate search and rescue attempt by the coast guard, David was not saved. Melissa alleged that the surface of the boat floor where David was standing and preparing to jump into the water was unreasonably slippery. In fact, at issue in the case was the manufacturing process used in coating the flooring. Melissa (and her attorney) felt that a nonslip surface should have been placed on the floor of the boat. The safety manual that came with the boat included these clauses: "CAUTION: Wet surfaces can be slippery. Passengers should wear adequate deck shoes while boarding and underway to avoid accidental slipping and injury." "CAUTION: Deck areas and swim platform are slippery when wet. Passengers must be careful when passing through companionway to prevent accidental slipping or tripping. Passengers should wear adequate deck shoes at all times to prevent accidental slipping.
