Modernism In Modern Art
Modernism, in the arts refers to a period of time from the late 19th century to mid 20th century
where artists challenged traditional art by experimenting with new forms of expression. Current
materials, approaches and techniques were utilised in order to create artworks that better reflected
modern society as an act of rebellion towards old–fashioned styles. One artist that influenced the art
world with her unique and dynamic technique was Grace Cossington–Smith, born on the 20th April
1892, in Neutral Bay, she was an Australian painter who rejected interest in depicting the observed
world, rather looking into her memories and emotions in order to connect the viewer and her work
on a deeper level. Her fascination with light and colour and her earning interest in what she saw
around her developed throughout the many phases of her work, accumulated in the radiant interiors
she painted in the 1950s and 1960s. Often giving a glimpse of the ordinary suburban home, Smith's
subjects varied from significant global events to characteristically Australian scenes. Alison
Rehfisch was another Australian modernist still life painter whose practice flourished between the
wars. Born on the 23rd January 1900 at Woollahra, she was influenced variously by the works of
Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall and Augustus John, her interest in design, colour and form is evident in
the many still life, landscape and flower paintings she produced during her career. She used thinly
applied colours and

Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Modern Art Analysis
On a trip to the Nelson–Atkins Museum of Art, my boyfriend, David, and I strolled through the
museum while I, being an art history major, recited to him all that I knew about certain pieces. We
observed sculptures by Auguste Rodin, works painted by Georgia O'Keeffe, and busts of Roman
leaders. David was enjoying all the artwork until we reached the Contemporary art gallery upon
where viewing Mark Rothko's Untitled No. 11 made in 1963, he shook his head in anger at what he
thought was a painting far from a masterpiece. His comment was one I'm sure many have said about
this particular piece and many other modern pieces of art, "I could have painted that." I couldn't help
to reply, "Yeah, but you didn't." David's sudden reaction upon viewing the ... Show more content on

11, but is it a good enough reason to spend millions of dollars on one of his paintings? In fact,
Rothko's 1961 painting Orange, Red, Yellow was bought for $86.9 million in May 2012 at Christie's
in New York setting a record for the abstract expressionist painter according to David Ng. However,
in 2011, a Cézanne painting, The Card Players sold for $250 million smashing the record for the
highest price paid for any artwork sold at auction (Stern). This may seem outrageous to some, but
for those who are opulent, "brands are king in fine art. Names like Rothko and Pollock distinguish
them from unknown artists the same way the Coke and Pepsi brands distinguish them from other
sugar water (Mayyasi)." According to the article "Why is Art Expensive?", these brands, such as
Rothko, Pollock, and Warhol, retain their value and appreciate over time. As someone who does not
participate in the lavish art auctions, it's hard to understand Christie's $745 million art auction in
May of 2013 as anything other than unreasonable. Yet buyers in the art market proclaim these
purchases as investments (Mayyasi). On the other hand, in a report entitled "Profit or Pleasure?
Exploring the Motivations Behind Treasure Trends", only a tenth of two thousand wealthy
individuals questioned bought art as an investment, whereas, seventy–five percent purchased art to
feel victorious at the auction and have cultural

The Influence Of Abstract And Modern Art
Abstract and modern art have really changed the way society views and appreciation for the
amazing contributions and work created by artists. There are so many styles and concepts which
those artists have come up with over times which are greatly reflected in their paintings and
creations. In this essay we will be going on a journey to find out the inspiration and the intended
messages from three paintings mentioned in the above topic. "The Large Bathers, 1898–1905 is the
largest of Cezanne's pictures and because it is also the most formal in aspect, it has been cited often
as an example of his ideal of composition and his restoration if classical monumentality after its
lapse during the nineteenth century" (www.PaulCezanne.org). This painting was one of the most
mind–blowing yet interesting pieces during this era because of its unfinished quality which caused
quite a stir among writers, artists and historians. The nude forms presented along with the river and
triangular pattern in which the trees were painted gives quite an interesting perspective to his work.
The composition of the painting did not reflect the ideal typical style from the Renaissance pyramid.
Instead it was created in another style where the central part is empty, the apex is intercepted by the
frame and the greatest compactness comes in smaller pyramids for the largest figures. One can also
notice from Cezanne's work the way he thought about portrayed women. "The abstract nude females

Renaissance Influence On Modern Art
In the United States, the Renaissance had a great influence on modern art because it was a natural
way in which artistic expression were extended. During this period, human beings were shifting
from the dominant religious ideas to the realism aspect. Which was highly reflected in the work of
art. This clearly indicates that the work of art during the renaissance and modernism era were very
distinct. To this end, this assignment has a purpose of comparing two works of art, which are
selected from the Museum of Fine Arts based in Houston. In particular, the comparison will consider
the way the nineteenth–century artists began to embrace the current urban spaces in modernity from
the old academic works. The two artworks being compared are the Berthe Morisot, The Basket
Chair, and the Gustave Caillebotte, The Orange Trees, 1878, which are both placed in room 222 of
the museum. Therefore, the comparison discusses that the male artists were more effective at this
time.
Generally, in this painting, it is clear that the style being adopted is that of impressionism. This is a

At the time this painting was being done, modernism was taking place in France. The country was
adopting new technologies like the car and train. At this time, women could not have a sense of
modernity. If they were to experience it, it was likely that they would be disregarded. Through
modernism a broad subject was opened in painting. This was fortunate for men and but not for
women, who remained on one side of the window. Men had the freedom in their subject matter.
Through modernism, more barriers were built for women to withhold them. It also connected
society by ensuring that classes were integrated. The clarity of the paintings indicates how
modernism was favoring men. As women still portray their lives us unfinished during the

Wharhol and Modern Art
Warhol simply took everyday items and transformed them into amazing pop art pieces: To create his
pieces, Warhol put himself upon the task of discovering not only what most stood out in modern art,
but he also looked at what was popular. He realized that the many Americans shopped for food
frequently and he set it upon himself to create an extensive line of supermarket merchandises. His
line of merchandise art compromised of price tags, Bristol boxes as well as a banana, and Coca–
Cola bottles .Warhol's 1962 creation of Coca Cola Bottles gained popularity because the bottles an
everyday item for an average American. Many people could identify with the products'. "Warhol
used to identify the nature of the great American society, anonymous and consumerist, devoted to
conformism and with a pride in unanimity, was the ubiquitous Coca Cola bottle– "(Copestone 12).
To Warhol, a Coca Cola bottle seemed so simple but, also a universal icon in the United States. After
taking hints from the public in the mid–twentieth century, Warhol was able to do what numerous
artists attempted to do but failed. Warhol extracted some of his ideas from other artists and built
upon them in his work. I would like to say Warhol put a coming to age culture on canvas and
transformed pop art it its entirety. One such art piece onto which Warhol used another artist's idea is
his Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) Warhol made this

"Painting today is pure intuition and luck and taking advantage of what happens when you splash
the stuff down. "– Francis Bacon. However when I learnt more about history of art and the way each
movement and happenings in the world inspired artist to make new works, I was able to see much
more than just a canvas with random paints and sketches. The interesting part about this concept is
that each piece of art could be interpreted in many different ways. In contemporary art there isn't
right and wrong, each of us view and find different meanings and connections with artworks. The
beginning of 20th century was a time of drastic change. New developments were made in the arenas
of the classical sciences, social science, psychology and philosophy – each challenging traditional
thought. Industrialization and the introduction of many new, challenging concepts in the fields of
politics as well as the development of new technologies gave artist more freedom to innovate and
break the rules of traditional art. By using new materials, techniques and the new approach artists
were pushing boundaries of what has previously been accepted art practice in order to invent
radically new styles. Modernism was a broad period surrounding many movements. It covered from
1860 to 1970. This movement challenged the traditional thinking with the aim to change the way
artists represented the world. Modernism refers to this

Focus Paper 1: Major Styles In Modern Art
Focus Paper 1: Major Styles in Modern Art
Art in the nineteenth century can be described as very traditional, similar, romantic, and simple.
Stepping into the twentieth century, artists turned to color, angles, and new incredibly
unconventional styles. Major art forms such as cubism, futurism, fauvism, non–objective, and the
international style were born. Artists became more creative and inspired by the new age. All three
styles rejected the traditional ways of nineteenth century art and entered the new century with
unconventional and revolutionary techniques and pieces that have changed the way artists think and
create still to this day.

Futurism originated in Italy in the earlier parts of the twentieth century. Its members aimed to rid
Italy of the older culture and integrate the modern era. Futurism artists embraced the new ideas,
media, culture, and technology. With its portrayal of popular culture in this movement also came the
inclusion of politics in the arts. Artist involved in this movement were enthusiastic about everything
that the modern world had to offer from technology and machines, to change, violence, and popular
media. Their art was often inspired by, and included, the modern city. The first futurist painting is
believed to be The City Rises (1910) by Umberto Boccioni.
Similarly, Non–objective art is abstract art. Non–objective or nonrepresentational art does not
directly portray an object, subject, person, place, or thing. Abstract art, much like cubism, futurism,
and fauvism, was developed in the earlier years of the twentieth century. Non–objective artists focus
more on the colors, textures, size, shapes, and processes of a painting rather than actually portraying
a certain scene, person, object, or landscape from the natural world. An example of a non–objective
painting is Picture with a Circle (1911) by Russian artist Wassily

How Did Pablo Picasso And Georges Braque Revolutionize...
Throughout the first decade of the twentieth century, a group of young painters, Pablo Picasso and
Georges Braque developed something which was to revolutionize modern art. In 1907 Pablo Picasso
painted the huge canvas "les Demoiselles d'Avignon " Both his laborious preparation for it has
confirmed his dedication towards it so. The painting represents not only a new phase in Picassos art
but the beginning of truly modern art. It is also the first cubist work. In this painting he used
distortion of female's body and geometric forms in an innovative way, It also shows the influence of
African art on Picasso. The geometrical aspect of their works quickly attracted the name "Cubist". "

When I visited the Fort Worth Modern Art Museum, I was reunited with one of my favorite art
pieces by the artist known as KAWS. I fell in love with his art when I visited the DMA as a child
with my family. He had an exhibition there and I immediately was drawn in by the vibrant colors
and chaotic images; but one caught my eye and I couldn't look away. An unknown factor was just
drawing me in to look over the whole piece, to document every line and curve. The piece was a lot
taller than me, so I was there for a while. Everything was so thought out and planned perfectly. Once

couldn't see the dimples or the second set of teeth as clearly. It was like looking through the opposite

were heightened, I could really see every detail. There's just this different feeling I can't really
explain, you can really see all the details, hard work, and effort he put into his work. Seeing this
piece again really brought back the memories from before. Of course it wasn't the same
surroundings around me as before, but I felt as if all time stood still and it was just me and the
painting. Even though I know the painting up and down I still found new things, whether it be a
dimple or a new wooden plank, it intrigued me every time. I appreciate how he could take
something so small and turn it into a monumental piece. To be able to tear down something piece by
piece and rearrange them into something new where the viewer can still recognize the original
object is amazing, that's why KAWS is my favorite artist. Revisiting this piece again boosted my
confidence to keep doing art because I love cartoons but never knew how to make them into a fine

Art In The Modern World
Mankind has gone through many challenges and hardships to get to where they presently are. As a
result, modern humans are completely different from the first humans that walked on Earth.
However, there has been a couple of things that have prevailed even after all these changes, and one
of them is art. Art has always been present in the history of humankind, from ancient civilizations to
the modern society. But, what makes art so important that it continues on through history?
The book Station Eleven, written by Emily St. John Mandel, explores the importance of art, in
which it narrates the lives of various people that are connected by Arthur, a celebrity who dies in
chapter one, before and twenty years after the Georgian Flu incident. The book depicts that even
though the circumstances in the old and new world are different, people in both worlds have a desire
to pursue the creation of art. The creation and final work of art is essential in human lives because
art provides a way to express one's emotions, art provides satisfaction to both the creator and viewer,
and it immortalizes the subject so that it can be remembered throughout generations. Therefore, as a
result of the outcomes of art, humans will always have a desire to create art in spite of all the
circumstances.
To begin with, art is used to express one's feelings. Miranda, Dr. Eleven's author, was considerably
wealthy, however, regardless of all her wealth, she still needed an outlet to express herself, and that
was her comic, Dr. Eleven. She used art to express her uncomfortableness in her new life. For
example, she wrote that Dr. Eleven thought "we were not meant for this world. I returned to my city,
to my shattered life and damaged home, to my loneliness, and tried to forget the sweetness of life on
Earth" (105). That was how Miranda felt after she figured out that Arthur was having an affair with
Elizabeth. After she married Arthur, she felt that "she'll never belong here no matter how hard she
tries. These are not her people. She is marooned on a strange planet" (92), in the same way, Dr.
Eleven thought that "he wasn't meant for this world". Miranda knew that she would have to go back
to her former life after her divorce with Arthur, and

And the continent of Africa. Sculpture of Africa, which forms the largest part of primitive art, can be
seen as early as 500 BC in the Nok culture which was named from the village in Nigeria where
pottery figures of this kind were first found. The way the tradition started for Africa was from the
Nok statuettes. Nok statuettes are mainly of human subjects. Made of terracotta, they combine
strong formal elements with a complete disregard for precise anatomy. Their expressive quality
places them at the start of the African sculptural tradition. African artist have started making
sculptures in 500 bc but for most of their sculptures most of them do not last a huge period of time.
Most African objects bear neither labels nor signatures, and unfortunately it is impossible to date
them precisely or to identify makers. The longest surviving tradition of African sculpture is figures
in terracotta. They are made by an element, Cast metal, and is the only other material to withstand
the continent's termites. Africa isn't very big on using a lot of art

The Museum Of Modern Art Christmas Card
While the LOVE sculpture is in fact a sculpture, it actually originated as a print image for the
Museum of Modern Art Christmas card in 1964. Shortly after it became a popular postage stamp,
while finally becoming a sculpture in 1970. The idea behind this work of art originated when the
Museum of Modern Art asked Indiana to design a Christmas card. He reflected upon his nomadic
childhood, remembering posters he had frequently seen at a Christian Science churches with the
words "God is love (Robert Indiana Works.)" He took this concept of love and stacked the LO on
top of the VE in red, green, and blue, and added further interest by tilting the O. While this became a
popular icon in the United States and beyond, Indiana refused to copyright his famous image and
variations of it. Since this image was being rapidly reproduced by the public, many people
incorrectly labeled Indiana as a sell out, even though he made very little money from his famous

groups. They were controlled by the academy and painted in a way that mainstream society
recognized. Many of their paintings depicted scenes of mythology and church. However in the 19th
century, industrialization brought many new technologies to ordinary people, making the impossible
possible. Many artists began to create artworks to explore the concept of symbolism. Many of their
subjects were daily things such as ordinary people, normal places and the things they had direct

Van Gogh depicted clouds and stars in whirly shape in order to direct the viewer´s eye around the
painting. When standing in front the painting, one would spontaneously be attracted by those swirls
and would follow one swirl to another. These elements make the painting seems to be fluid and
abstract. The yellow crescent moon at the upper right corner is blight and mild. It softens the
painting to convey a sense of serenity. Compared to other Impressionist paintings, Starry Night is
somehow different: van Gogh used very expressive color and distorted form to give the viewers a
very bright picture. Van Gogh wrote a letter to his brother to point out that compared to other
Impressionist artists of that time, he utilized "exaggeration in terms of composition." He uses
techniques such as surrealism to draw those swirls. In Starry Night the landscape seems to be a way
to convey the artist's emotion. I believe that the fight van Gogh had against his mental illness is
reflected in the painting. When looking at the upper sky in the painting, there is a strong contrast
between the sky and the stars, similar to what van Gogh experienced that time: his illness and his
hope to recover. Van Gogh painted the village in dark color but on the contrary, he used bright color
to draw the windows. I think this contrast gave people the idea that finally human should have hope

The Influence Of Modern Art
Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible way?
After all, these wealthy individuals are spending their hard earned bills, hundreds upon thousands
upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn't make any sense to anyone but the maker. This
could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly "grimey" buyers are making our economy go down
the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is a very inspiring investment, but the fact that these
artists that spit out works that don't put any effort or passion into it are making the green show more
readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be affecting our economy with their
meaning leading to quick production, their odd "cult worship" making it understandable to those
who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of sales types where the money goes
and how it is made.
How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole of
Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is very hard to comprehend as far as the rational mind
goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois, studied
the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. Hinrichs claims that "More than any preceding
artistic style or aesthetic, Modernism epitomizes the emergence of a deliberate cultural and social
agenda. " (Pg 22). Most of the art is made from Modern idea and events, making them

The Influence Of Local ' Primitive ' Art On A Modern Artist
The Influence of Local "Primitive" Art on a Modern Artist Modern art has been influenced by
"primitive" art from Africa and the Indian Islands but Barbara Hepworth was influenced by the hills
and landscape around here. Her work Simple Form, 1937 (fig. 1) is reflective of the landscape and
the rock outcropping in the area around where she grew up. This artist did not have to look to a
different country for "primitive" art to inspire her work. The primitive artists also seem to have been
inspired by these same outcroppings of rocks in much the same way. Like other modern artists
Hepworth was breaking down the form to its essential form.Hepworth expressed that it was the
landscape of her childhood that impressed upon her and where she looked to for inspiration. When
Hepworth talks about the landscaped that inspired her work from early memories in her
autobiography. Hepworth's father would take her on drives in the countryside. It is quite possible
these Bridestones are apart of that inspiration. Hepworth rights about these memories and says
"Above all, there was the sensation of moving physically over the contours of fulnesses and
concavities, through hollows and over peaks–feeling, touching, seeing, through mind and hand and
eye" Hepworth's family was very loving and supporting of her and her parents made sacrifices for
Hepworth to every advantage she could. Many of Hepworth's early works have to do with woman,

How did World War I Influence Modern Day Art? Plan of Investigation World War I was a war that
shocked the world and brought about new emotions that created a large wave of "–isms" as well as
the "lost generation" of writers. Modern art was catalyzed by World War I and without a thorough
study of the various forms of art that resulted from it, modern art and the tremendous effect that
World War I had on the people of the world cannot be fully understood. This historical investigation
will cover a few aspects of the art that resulted from World War I so that a general idea of the
emotions shared by the people of the world can be known. A few paintings that represent specific
movements will be studied to understand the artistic movement. A number of museum exhibitions
will be studied along with government websites, databases, and museum websites, especially from
the Museum of Modern Art.

Barr submitted the concept of what was to become of the museum. It had to be organized as a multi–
departmental structure each devoted for Architecture and Design, Photography, Film and Video, and
they should stand side by side with traditional arts such as Painting and Sculpture. Architect Philip
Johnson built on this idea. The multi–departmental structure seemed to best fit with the burgeoning
International Style, a modernist architectural movement from which Philip Johnson belonged. In this
architecture, buildings are designed with simple geometric lines and clean, precise surfaces and with
minimum decoration. Walls are made almost entirely of glass, known as curtain walls–a signature
Johnson was known for–that are used to give the building a light and airy appearance.
The Museum of Modern of Art was the first to use the words "International Style", which was a
fitting term to introduce modernist arts to the world. Johnson and another renowned architect
Henry–Russell Hitchcock organized a major show under the title "Modern Architecture:
International Exhibition". There they described the International Style that expresses several design
principles, that concerns with volume rather than mass and solidity, regularity instead of axial
symmetry, and the proscription of "arbitrary applied decoration". Exhibits featured leading European

Moving on towards the new modern Islamic art form which has been recently integrated, has
adopted elements from both the traditional Islamic art and modern contemporary art. Therefore, to

According to Wolf, "Modern art represents an evolving set of ideas among a number of painters,
sculptors, writers, and performers who – both individually and collectively – sought new approaches
to art making." (Wolf) As well, modern art embraces the technological advancements of the modern
age which allows artists to display new innovative ways of art. Modern artists use new techniques to
represent their experience of the new modern life.

Modern Art : Traditional Art Then And Now
Traditional Art then and now
When thinking of traditional art I tend to imagine the grandiose oil paintings or gestural sculptures
of figures displayed in the various national galleries I have visited, this to me, is what I think of
being 'traditional' in terms of art. A more general description of traditional art is; "Art that is a part of
the culture of a group of people, skills and knowledge of which are passed down through
generations from master craftsmen to apprentices." (www.yourdictonary.com, 14/11/2017). whereas
I do to a extent agree with this statement, I am however conscious that in the current day the term
'traditional art' is used in opposition with digital art. So therefore in the digital era traditional art can
be seen as an art form that is created with a physical and tangible medium, usually painting or
sculpture, as opposed to art created using digital means. Art has been around since the dawn of man,
as a form of expression, a way to make sense of the world. From the primitive animal paintings in
caves to the beautifully intricate and highly skilled oil paintings by artist like Titian and Rembrandt
during the high Renaissance. Oil paintings have always had a tangibility to them, they exist in the
world as a physical object, one that is displayed usually with great intention. In galleries they are
held in high esteem as objects of value and prestige. Nonetheless traditionally art was usually in
generality displayed two different types of places,

Modern is a term that can hold many different meanings. In order for something to be modern it
must be created or inspired by the experiences of living in modernity. A period of social, political,
and economic change that began in the eighteenth century. Since the definition of modern is so
broad it allows for lots of controversy about whether or not something is necessarily modern. When
it comes to modern art this especially is an issue. In most of the worlds eyes modern art is a

Howe's painting style was very modern, stemming from both the style he was taught at the Studio
School and modern geometric shapes. His piece Rider, a mural that he painted at the University of
South Dakota, portrays Sioux dancers and riders as explosive fractures of color. This painting is very
abstract with bright colors and sharp geometric shapes. The styles used in the painting are very
similar to that of many other European modern artists. Regardless of this neither the modernist
movement nor the traditional indian painters accepted Howe's work. When Howe attempted to enter
his work in the 1958 Philbrook Annual he was told that his paintings did not represent Indian style.
He explained that though the image may not look like it hold traditional meaning that these

20th Century Modern Art In America
What is This Place? In 2016, Black Mountain College was recognized in two major exhibits as the
creative genesis of art in America. Curator Helen Molesworth's show, "Art of Our Time" at Los
Angeles' MOCA museum re–contextualizes the story of 20th century modern art in America, re–
framing the common idea that it began in New York City. The Hammer Museum's "Leap Before You
Look", developed first at the ICA in Boston and then taken to Los Angeles, reflects the sheer scale
and relevance of art, performance, literature and music developed at BMC during 1933 to 1957.
Molesworth explains, "This historical story that we tell, it begins with this idea that New York stole
the art world after World War II, and that there's a certain kind of Modernist

Graffiti As A Modern Form Of Art
Art has been a highly valued way of expressing oneself in any culture. Through the use of the
artistic skill one can show the oppression that may be felt from society, or to develop a certain style
that follows what the culture is up to date with and problems that may need some emphasis to be
noticed. Art is not only left for the artistically skilled to do anyone who can develop a thought and
can put artistic meaning on their own creative canvas can be considered an artist. Graffiti has been
considered as an irrational way of property damage called "art", or a beautiful way for the common
artist to express their problems, thoughts or ideas. Graffiti should be considered a modern form of
art. Graffiti possesses all the makings to be considered artwork that can be achieved by anyone and
is placed on public walls for all to view and interpret as they feel accordingly. Graffiti is an art form
that the common person can use to express their views, but graffiti is also an extremely controversial
topic in society. Some people believe that public space should not be destroyed by tagging and
graffiti, but the people that think that put graffiti and tagging in the same category. For example,
someone could paint a mural on a public space of a little girl holding a soldiers hand. This isn't
someone destroying a public space, this is someone making a beautiful representation of their take
on what the army is doing for the world. If this was on a paper canvas it could be put in an art

Cubism : The Art Movement Of Modern Art
Cubism was the art movement that took modern art to the next level. It was one of the first major
forms of Abstractionism. Cubism looks as if the painting was build with blocks. Artists used blocks
and geometric shapes to form figures of men and women. There was no certain color scheme,
however colors were usually very different in order to distinguish parts of the body. Anatomy was
jumbled, but bodies were clear and visible. Pablo Picasso is known to be a mastermind of the art
world. He essentially invented cubism and contributed to the advancement of modern art. Les
Demoiselles d'Avignon is a painting that shows five nude ladies all posing different ways. All of
them have very different faces and body shapes, something that was common during Cubism. The
women are formed out of geometric shapes, but their forms are definite. Georges Braque was the
neighbor of Pablo Picasso and he took Cubism on a different path. Instead of making the shapes 2D,
he used light and perspective to make shapes appear 3D. Man with a Guitar is very difficult to
distinguish a figure, unlike Picasso's works. If you look closely and focus on different points, you
can see a man playing a guitar. The 3D shapes and dark colors give it a slight heavy–hearted feel.
Futurism was an art movement, as well as a social movement that originated in Italy. The movement
had a emphasization in technology, science, industrialization, and youth of the future. Futurists

Vincent Van Gogh: Paving The Way Of Modern Art
Paving the way of Modern Art:
Van Gogh as a modern style icon
"Starry, starry night. Paint your palette blue and gray."
Seems familiar? The excerpt above is from the lyrics of the song Vincent by Don Mclean. But what
you don't know is that there's something enigmatic in this song. Given that, it is inspired from the
painting The Starry night but it is also about the uncertain life and poignant death its painter –
Vincent Van Gogh.
Born in 1853, a child who in his later years became an artist after realizing his true calling, the one
who is unappreciated at his own time but has been a beacon of modern art today – Vincent Van

Modern Art Vs. Contemporary Art
Art overall is created and adored by numerous amount of people for many reasons, such as
amplifying shared common visual language. The word art often branches into many different
movements and components. Modern art or Contemporary art is one those components; this specific
genre began mainly in the 1860's to the 1970's. During, this time period artists began throwing aside
their own beliefs in a spirit of experimentation and the bringing of new ideas. The purpose of
Modern art is to beautify one's surroundings with intrigue, its often very diverse and cannot be
easily defined through a list of visual characteristics, artistic themes or cultural concern. Moreover,
Modern art is often hard to understand by people because, unlike Egyptian tomb paintings or Greek
sculptures, it speaks to the dramatic social, political and technological changes of the last 50–60
years, and questions many of society's values and assumptions. Also, Modern artists known for
incorporating a great deal of abstraction into their works and representational forms to convey their
ideas more elaborately; Rene Magritte is one of those artists. In the False Mirror by Rene Magritte
the artist presents his viewers with an enormous lashless eye illuminated with luminous cloud–swept
blue sky filling the iris and opaque, and a dead–black disc for the pupil. The painting is filled with a
great deal of allusion, because the artist gives the viewer both a look through the eye as if it's a

Modern Music : Is Music An Art?
To most people in the 21st century, kicking back and pressing play on a playlist full of pop and rap
music is an enjoyable pastime, however some people argue that modern music can no longer be
considered an art. Music is a very opinion based topic so it is very difficult to discuss without
disagreement although claiming that today's popular music genres can no longer be classed as an art
is blatant disrespect. Art is defined by the creation process, not whether people find it interesting;
today's celebrities do care a lot about public appearances although the deeper meaning behind their
clothing, voice and choice of words forges the publicity into the art itself; music's ability to reach
large audiences and raise awareness of issues is still used heavily within today's music.
Art is the application of human creative skill and imagination and can come in the form of any sense
such as visuals or sounds. Classical music is thought to be a form of art because of the creative
combination of notes being played on multiple instruments. Modern day genres like pop and hip–
hop uses the same creative thinking and combining of instruments, however they often use pre–
recorded instrumental notes and insert them into a musical program to perfect the beat. The modern
technology allows artists and producers to record a beat, rhythm, chorus or verse and repeat it
without minor differences. The programs also open new possibilities such as repeating the same
word or phrase in the background of a song, this is known as an ad–lib and has become a popular
trend in hip–hop music. Although pop, rap and hip–hop may not always use authentic instruments in
the studio, it is still the same creative thinking and imagination that is put into use as that of a
classical musician which makes an art an art.
The United States is the home of pop–culture where fans flock to see their favourite rap and pop
artists perform or make public appearances. Abby H. from The Huffington Post claims "Pop and rap
music has evolved into a shallow, image–obsessed industry that conforms to what the public wants
to hear and see, eliminating the focus on the actual music.". Abby's comment on the artists' focus on
public image over musical talent may well be true

The impact of industrial revolution on modern art Essay
Impact of Industrial Revolution on Modern Art at the turn of the 20th Century.
To understand most period and movements in modern art, one must first understand the context in
which they occurred. When one looks at the various artistic styles, one will realize how artists react
to historical and cultural changes and how artists perceive their relation to society.
The transition between the 19th and 20th century has brought further development of modernistic
ideas, concepts and techniques in art. Inspired by Cezanne's idea, saying that all nature objects can
be illustrated with just three geometrical figures: cube, sphere and cone, Pablo Picasso created his
first paintings, which became the icons of modern art and cubism movement in ... Show more

Kandinsky transformed colour into a completely abstract art absolutely divorced from subject
matter. The fauvists and expressionists shared an appreciation of the pure and simplified shapes of
various examples of primitive art, an enthusiasm that was generated by Gauguin and extended to
Picasso, Brancusi, Modigliani, Derain, and others.
Cubism
About 1909 the implications of Cézanne's highly organized yet revolutionary spatial structures were
expanded by Picasso and Braque, who invented an abstract art of still lives converted into shifting
volumes and planes. Cubism, developed by the artists of the school of Paris, went through several
stages and had an enormous influence on European and American painting and sculpture. In
sculpture its notable exponents included Picasso, Duchamp–Villon, Lipchitz, González, and
Archipenko, who began to realize the possibilities of convex and concave volumes. Cubism was
absorbed in Italy by the exponents of futurism and in Germany by the Blaue Reiter group; both
these movements were cut short by the advent of World War I. Fauvism and cubism were introduced
by members of the Eight to a generally shocked American audience in

Art And Modern Art : The Evolution Of Aestheticism
The 19th century was a time of great progress in art, as well as an age of exploration in how women
were portrayed in painting. It was a period in which "modern art" as we presently define it truly
began to develop. Without nineteenth century artists such as William Holman Hunt, John
Waterhouse, and Gustave Klimt, there is a significant chance that what we know as the art scene
today would be radically different. This was an era that shaped the medium of studio art into one
with great creative freedom. The majority of the late 19th century art that I will be discussing
tonight falls under the category of Aestheticism, or art that seeks to express what is beautiful. To
understand the origins of Aestheticism, one must first hear a brief history of the mainstream art
traditions that led to this change in values. Until around 1850, Academies of art ruled the art scene
and defined what was beautiful and what could be considered art. Academies included the French
Academy and the Royal Academy of Art in Great Britain, which were both government
organizations that controlled the education and exhibition of art. Any artist who was not trained and
supported by these academies could not have a successful career because they would not be
accepted into the salons, or annual exhibitions organized by the Academy, where art was displayed
and purchased. The Academy had many standards that artists enrolled in their classes had to adhere
to. First, the goal of the Academy was to elevate the

Modern Art History
When I was five years old, my parents took me to the Louvre. Although I was not familiar with all
the famous European artists and how much the paintings valued, I was mesmerized by the animated
pictures on the wall. Standing before the painting, I felt an unspeakable pleasure permitted only to
god himself. From that moment, I knew I was destined to be an artist, just like them in the Louvre.
With the intense passion I had for arts, I kept digging the deeper level of artistic technique and
appreciation. Unfortunately, as I learnt more about art history and style, I could not resist a sense of
boredom. Now technology was developing at a rapid rate, but, in contrast, traditional arts became
more and more pale and powerless. However, in their time, artists like Da Vinci and Raphael were
superstars like Lady Gaga in our time. Just as Renaissance saved the art field once, I thought the art
world needed another revolution now more than ever. And I could feel the fire burning in my chest
and calling my destiny to lead. Combining modern technology with the artistic skills, Virtual Reality
filled every criterion I had for a new art type. It would draw enough attention because of its novelty
and in the same time maximize the value of art design. Excited by my groundbreaking idea, I started

Visual Art Vs Modern Art
As we know it for the most part, visual art today completely differs from the kinds that had been
made before the twentieth century in an indirect way. Realistic depictions of the reality surrounding
us has basically surrendered its place for endeavors to truly pass on the craftsman's internal world
straightforwardly through the assorted variety of colors, shapes, and the means of visual depiction,
which is generally significant. In this manner, the inquiry emerges: in what capacity would it be
advisable for one to truly assess bits of present day workmanship given that customary criteria of
evaluation do not make a difference for this situation? Unlike traditional art, where one can make
judgments and accusations about an artist's skills, composition, and the scene. Present day art ought
to explicitly be assessed in a somewhat unique way.
Despite the fact that there are fundamentally various masterful laws and tenets, any appraisal made
about a bit of artwork generally stays subjective. My belief is that one can most easily explain why
someone really enjoys a particular piece of art, but will for all intents and purposes not be able to
thoroughly persuade those who whole heartedly disagree with them or for the most part have no
artistic taste, which essentially is quite significant. Considering this, for all intents and purposes let
us refer to the work piece: "Saturn Devouring His Son"–a particularly famous painting by the artist
Francisco Goya. In spite of the fact that

Analysis Of Degenerate Art: Attack On Modern Art In Nazi...
Throughout the Degenerate Art: Attack on Modern Art in Nazi Germany, 1937, presented at the
Neue Galerie these past months, one is able to have a close look at the cold battle among the
German idealist artists versus the expressionist artists. The conflict between the two is caused by
their individualized concept of what modernity is at the beginning of the 20th century. By standing
in a gallery with both German classical art and degenerate art, degenerate being a synonym to
expressionist art used by Nazis, and having them beg for attention one can feel an unexplained
tension surrounding him. The most obvious contrast between the two ideals of modernity is
experienced in the "German vs Degenerate Art" and the "Dresden 1945: Karl Schmidt – Rottluff" ...

When present in the "German vs Degenerate Art" gallery, one can notice the effort put by the artists
who promote the idea of updated classical artworks in context of German political taste; and at times
this effort is just so obvious that it takes away from the painting itself. For instance, Udo Wendel's
The Art of Newspaper, 1939 and Adolf Wissel's The Sculptor August Waterbeck, 1932 are two
paintings that resemble the German ideal art, and both seems to loosen from its beauty due to the
immense effort placed by the artists to make it look more classical and more perfect than it already
is. Both paintings depict modern day people painted in a classical style, as close to perfection as it
can be done, and in both paintings there is an additional classical element as part of the composition,
either a greco sculpture or an art book open on the page of roman art. This forceful repeated element
of classical artworks within the already German classical painting prevents the viewer from thinking
of modernity in any other way. It puts the viewer in the perspective of seeing himself as part of a
perfect life, while pressures him to want to

Is Modern Art Communistic Analysis
Taken from an article originally published in 1952 for the New York Sunday Times Magazine,
comes the writing, "Is Modern Art Communistic?", where Alfred H. Barr Jr. refutes the incorrect
categorization of modern art solely being communistic in representation for totalitarianism regimes.
By analyzing the regulation of art and the similarities in political control that took place in Soviet
Russia and Nazi Germany and how subject matter and all artistic liberties were dictated, he
highlights the opposition that these governments had towards ideas of modernity and abstraction.
Modern art is based on a foundation of 'non–conformity and love of freedom,' closer to the Western
political values of democracy, rather than the controlling propaganda

Modern Art And Postmodernism
A Japanese postmodern artist Yayoi Kusama, had an art technique of drawing and painting dots. Her
art form was influenced by her psychological problems in which she expressed herself in an artistic
form of painting dots. Both literature arts and the visual arts uses different techniques to express
themselves whether it be modern or postmodern. Postmodern art use a lot of different techniques to
express themselves and manipulate the audience in an entirely different way like how Kusama had
expressed herself in a different way than artists have previously done before. Postmodernism started
after WWII and used a happier and sometimes an ironic tone in their creations. Modernism started in
the 20th century and were sometimes difficult to understand the pieces of art and writing. It is the
departure of traditional arts and a movement in the arts to create new styles and techniques. The new
form of art often causes conflict and sorts of negative reaction to those viewing because of its new
art form that questions many people. The new form of art are subjective and creates different
reactions that often tends to question what art really is in general. Both modernism and
postmodernism uses many of the similar authorial techniques but uses different tones in the
writings. Many of the authorial techniques they use are imagism, fragmentation, motifs, mutations,
and many other techniques to create an effect.
Although modernism uses similar techniques as postmodernism, modernism tends

Comparing The Museum Of Modern Art
Similarities exist between the architecture of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the
Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. The Museum of Modern Art, designed by Philip L.
Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone, was one of the earliest examples of the International Style
(Ricciotti, 1985, p. 51). The Museum of Modern Art was established as an educational institution
which displayed painting sculpture but also introduced photography, film, and industrial design
(Ricciotti, 1985, p. 51). In contrast, the Kimball Art Museum's purpose was to display the Kimball
family's extensive collection and preserve it for future generations (Loud, 1987, p. 15). The initial
collection was comprised of late–renaissance and baroque work which contrasted ... Show more

Kahn's vaulted skylights created unique, filtered, light that showcased the art and played an
important role in the museum's innovative design (Loud, 1987, p, 44). The one–story museum also
created rooms that created harmony with the art and were void of unnecessary decorative elements
or details (Loud, p.1987, p. 34). Additionally, instead of a large, sprawling royal palace, the Museum
of Modern Art's vertical design fit into the crowded city (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 60). The interior spaces
were reminiscent of the original townhouse structure with multiple stories and shorter ceiling height
(Ricciotti, 1985, p. 58). In comparison to the Louvre, the gallery spaces did not feature grand halls
as the modernist architects rejected the Beaux–Arts traditional elements (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 59). The
style of the Museum of Modern Art symbolizes the "ideological aims" of the original design
(Ricciotti, 1985, p. 51). The original facade is one of the only features that remains to this day
(Ricciotti, 1985, p.74). The results of different tastes and backgrounds resulted in a building that is
based on variations of the international style and more towards modernism (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 72).
Recent renovations demonstrate respect to the original design and its significant past (Ricciotti,

The Art Of Modern Art : Audrey Flack
Art. A word that encompasses different ideas and feelings to everyone of us. Boredom, excitement,
hate, love, to the themes of politics, portraits, photographs, comedy and on and on. The art of taking
a photograph and transporting it to a piece of canvas with paint and acrylic is called photo realism. A
pioneer of her time, Audrey Flack did just that. Her name is synonymous with photorealism in the
art world. She took the world by a storm with her paintings of people and and their emotions based
off of photography. (Kleiner, 971) Becoming the first artist to actually express emotion into her art
as all other photorealistic artist chose emotionless still life. She opened up a can of excitement and
depth when she went from abstract painting in the 1950's to the 1960's photorealism. In 1966 her
collection was permanently displayed at the Museum of Modern Art, allowing Audrey Flack to
become the first photorealistic artist to have this happen to. Audrey Flack was born in New York in
!931, where she still resides. Using her drawings as a young Jewish girl growing up during the
holocaust and WWII she was able to escape reality for a bit. Her father continued to feed into her
love of art by giving her a 35mm camera. Photography became another element within her artwork,
becoming even more apparent later on in life. At the age of 14 the School of Art and Music in New
York became her second home after she passed a exam she was sure she would fail. Her inspirations

Art In The Modern Era
The modern era was brought about in the mid–nineteenth century by the industrial revolution in
Western Europe. New technologies and the advancement of comfort amenities would change the
way that people lived daily lives. Many individuals would move from agricultural areas into cities,
changing from simple lives focused on family and farming into the dense lifestyles of city life. With
such drastic changes, artists (specifically painters) were drawn to a different type of landscape
paintings, which would involve new styles and techniques that would change the way art would be
produced for a century. In the years before the modern era, the art academy had recognized
movements such as the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the celebration of the Rococo style, and the
ideal paintings of Neoclassicism. However, artists at the time, did not paint what was before them
objectively, but instead focused on what they perceived the scenes to look like. Amongst new
developments, photographic technology became a standard for realistic images, and thirty years
down the road, it would become the most accurate way to capture a scene. The largest potential
threat photography posed to the painters of the modern era, was that the camera was becoming more
common and accessible to the public, who did not need years of instruction and discipline to
operate. This new technology, that could capture scenes with unmatched detail from sculpture, paint,
or drawing, forced the artists to change

Parr's Influence On Modern Art
SKINS WITHIN "How do you make a picture that works as art, but still refers to a person, to their
life, to them...?"(Whitely, 2008). The works of famous artists such as Mike Parr and Frida Kahlo
reflect Whitley's quote, as their artwork frequently explores their own individuality in an attempt to
grasp the 'self'. The way that they portray aspects of their identity have had a major influence on
modern art. Kahlo and Parr are successful in exploring their emotional states of mind and cultural
identities through the manipulation of imagery, techniques and media in order to illustrate important
aspects of their lives. The Pool of Blood V (1988) The Pool of Blood V is one of many self–portraits

"There have been two great accidents in my life. One was the train the other was Diego. Diego was
by far the worst." (Kahlo, 1940). The double self–portrait depicts a vision of how Kahlo perceived
herself during this time. Kahlo depends on the symbolism of the two exposed hearts illustrated in
order to communicte this concept. The two are holding hands and both of their hearts are able to be
seen. On the left is the Frida whose heart has been left broken by Rivera, and it appears that she is
bleeding out, leaving her weak and vulnerable. This is symbolic of her emotonal pain during the
time of her and Rivera's separation, and the loneliness she felt with him no longer in her life. The
Frida on the right is portrayed as much the opposite. Her exposed heart is seemingly whole and
strong, she holds in her hand a small portrait of Rivera. This displays a more independent version of
herself whom Rivera loved. Kahlo often would incorporate aspects of her Mexican heritage into her
paintings and it is represented in The Two Fridas. On the right she is dressed in tradtional Mexican
attire, but as her heart is broken she strays away from her cultural background, as she wears a
European style wedding dress. Kahlo had never portrayed herself as anything other than how she
actually was, and she never made attempts to erase her cultural

Modernism In Modern Art

  • 1. Modernism In Modern Art Modernism, in the arts refers to a period of time from the late 19th century to mid 20th century where artists challenged traditional art by experimenting with new forms of expression. Current materials, approaches and techniques were utilised in order to create artworks that better reflected modern society as an act of rebellion towards old–fashioned styles. One artist that influenced the art world with her unique and dynamic technique was Grace Cossington–Smith, born on the 20th April 1892, in Neutral Bay, she was an Australian painter who rejected interest in depicting the observed world, rather looking into her memories and emotions in order to connect the viewer and her work on a deeper level. Her fascination with light and colour and her earning interest in what she saw around her developed throughout the many phases of her work, accumulated in the radiant interiors she painted in the 1950s and 1960s. Often giving a glimpse of the ordinary suburban home, Smith's subjects varied from significant global events to characteristically Australian scenes. Alison Rehfisch was another Australian modernist still life painter whose practice flourished between the wars. Born on the 23rd January 1900 at Woollahra, she was influenced variously by the works of Paul Cézanne, Marc Chagall and Augustus John, her interest in design, colour and form is evident in the many still life, landscape and flower paintings she produced during her career. She used thinly applied colours and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Nelson-Atkins Museum Of Modern Art Analysis On a trip to the Nelson–Atkins Museum of Art, my boyfriend, David, and I strolled through the museum while I, being an art history major, recited to him all that I knew about certain pieces. We observed sculptures by Auguste Rodin, works painted by Georgia O'Keeffe, and busts of Roman leaders. David was enjoying all the artwork until we reached the Contemporary art gallery upon where viewing Mark Rothko's Untitled No. 11 made in 1963, he shook his head in anger at what he thought was a painting far from a masterpiece. His comment was one I'm sure many have said about this particular piece and many other modern pieces of art, "I could have painted that." I couldn't help to reply, "Yeah, but you didn't." David's sudden reaction upon viewing the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 11, but is it a good enough reason to spend millions of dollars on one of his paintings? In fact, Rothko's 1961 painting Orange, Red, Yellow was bought for $86.9 million in May 2012 at Christie's in New York setting a record for the abstract expressionist painter according to David Ng. However, in 2011, a Cézanne painting, The Card Players sold for $250 million smashing the record for the highest price paid for any artwork sold at auction (Stern). This may seem outrageous to some, but for those who are opulent, "brands are king in fine art. Names like Rothko and Pollock distinguish them from unknown artists the same way the Coke and Pepsi brands distinguish them from other sugar water (Mayyasi)." According to the article "Why is Art Expensive?", these brands, such as Rothko, Pollock, and Warhol, retain their value and appreciate over time. As someone who does not participate in the lavish art auctions, it's hard to understand Christie's $745 million art auction in May of 2013 as anything other than unreasonable. Yet buyers in the art market proclaim these purchases as investments (Mayyasi). On the other hand, in a report entitled "Profit or Pleasure? Exploring the Motivations Behind Treasure Trends", only a tenth of two thousand wealthy individuals questioned bought art as an investment, whereas, seventy–five percent purchased art to feel victorious at the auction and have cultural ... • 5. The Influence Of Abstract And Modern Art Abstract and modern art have really changed the way society views and appreciation for the amazing contributions and work created by artists. There are so many styles and concepts which those artists have come up with over times which are greatly reflected in their paintings and creations. In this essay we will be going on a journey to find out the inspiration and the intended messages from three paintings mentioned in the above topic. "The Large Bathers, 1898–1905 is the largest of Cezanne's pictures and because it is also the most formal in aspect, it has been cited often as an example of his ideal of composition and his restoration if classical monumentality after its lapse during the nineteenth century" (www.PaulCezanne.org). This painting was one of the most mind–blowing yet interesting pieces during this era because of its unfinished quality which caused quite a stir among writers, artists and historians. The nude forms presented along with the river and triangular pattern in which the trees were painted gives quite an interesting perspective to his work. The composition of the painting did not reflect the ideal typical style from the Renaissance pyramid. Instead it was created in another style where the central part is empty, the apex is intercepted by the frame and the greatest compactness comes in smaller pyramids for the largest figures. One can also notice from Cezanne's work the way he thought about portrayed women. "The abstract nude females present in Large ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Renaissance Influence On Modern Art In the United States, the Renaissance had a great influence on modern art because it was a natural way in which artistic expression were extended. During this period, human beings were shifting from the dominant religious ideas to the realism aspect. Which was highly reflected in the work of art. This clearly indicates that the work of art during the renaissance and modernism era were very distinct. To this end, this assignment has a purpose of comparing two works of art, which are selected from the Museum of Fine Arts based in Houston. In particular, the comparison will consider the way the nineteenth–century artists began to embrace the current urban spaces in modernity from the old academic works. The two artworks being compared are the Berthe Morisot, The Basket Chair, and the Gustave Caillebotte, The Orange Trees, 1878, which are both placed in room 222 of the museum. Therefore, the comparison discusses that the male artists were more effective at this time. Generally, in this painting, it is clear that the style being adopted is that of impressionism. This is a style ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the time this painting was being done, modernism was taking place in France. The country was adopting new technologies like the car and train. At this time, women could not have a sense of modernity. If they were to experience it, it was likely that they would be disregarded. Through modernism a broad subject was opened in painting. This was fortunate for men and but not for women, who remained on one side of the window. Men had the freedom in their subject matter. Through modernism, more barriers were built for women to withhold them. It also connected society by ensuring that classes were integrated. The clarity of the paintings indicates how modernism was favoring men. As women still portray their lives us unfinished during the modernism era, the live of men was already ... • 9. Wharhol and Modern Art Warhol simply took everyday items and transformed them into amazing pop art pieces: To create his pieces, Warhol put himself upon the task of discovering not only what most stood out in modern art, but he also looked at what was popular. He realized that the many Americans shopped for food frequently and he set it upon himself to create an extensive line of supermarket merchandises. His line of merchandise art compromised of price tags, Bristol boxes as well as a banana, and Coca– Cola bottles .Warhol's 1962 creation of Coca Cola Bottles gained popularity because the bottles an everyday item for an average American. Many people could identify with the products'. "Warhol used to identify the nature of the great American society, anonymous and consumerist, devoted to conformism and with a pride in unanimity, was the ubiquitous Coca Cola bottle– "(Copestone 12). To Warhol, a Coca Cola bottle seemed so simple but, also a universal icon in the United States. After taking hints from the public in the mid–twentieth century, Warhol was able to do what numerous artists attempted to do but failed. Warhol extracted some of his ideas from other artists and built upon them in his work. I would like to say Warhol put a coming to age culture on canvas and transformed pop art it its entirety. One such art piece onto which Warhol used another artist's idea is his Details of Renaissance Paintings (Sandro Botticelli, Birth of Venus, 1482) Warhol made this piece, an intriguing illustration of ... • 11. Modern Art Research Paper "Painting today is pure intuition and luck and taking advantage of what happens when you splash the stuff down. "– Francis Bacon. However when I learnt more about history of art and the way each movement and happenings in the world inspired artist to make new works, I was able to see much more than just a canvas with random paints and sketches. The interesting part about this concept is that each piece of art could be interpreted in many different ways. In contemporary art there isn't right and wrong, each of us view and find different meanings and connections with artworks. The beginning of 20th century was a time of drastic change. New developments were made in the arenas of the classical sciences, social science, psychology and philosophy – each challenging traditional thought. Industrialization and the introduction of many new, challenging concepts in the fields of politics as well as the development of new technologies gave artist more freedom to innovate and break the rules of traditional art. By using new materials, techniques and the new approach artists were pushing boundaries of what has previously been accepted art practice in order to invent radically new styles. Modernism was a broad period surrounding many movements. It covered from 1860 to 1970. This movement challenged the traditional thinking with the aim to change the way artists represented the world. • 13. Focus Paper 1: Major Styles In Modern Art Focus Paper 1: Major Styles in Modern Art Art in the nineteenth century can be described as very traditional, similar, romantic, and simple. Stepping into the twentieth century, artists turned to color, angles, and new incredibly unconventional styles. Major art forms such as cubism, futurism, fauvism, non–objective, and the international style were born. Artists became more creative and inspired by the new age. All three styles rejected the traditional ways of nineteenth century art and entered the new century with unconventional and revolutionary techniques and pieces that have changed the way artists think and create still to this day. Futurism originated in Italy in the earlier parts of the twentieth century. Its members aimed to rid Italy of the older culture and integrate the modern era. Futurism artists embraced the new ideas, media, culture, and technology. With its portrayal of popular culture in this movement also came the inclusion of politics in the arts. Artist involved in this movement were enthusiastic about everything that the modern world had to offer from technology and machines, to change, violence, and popular media. Their art was often inspired by, and included, the modern city. The first futurist painting is believed to be The City Rises (1910) by Umberto Boccioni. Similarly, Non–objective art is abstract art. Non–objective or nonrepresentational art does not directly portray an object, subject, person, place, or thing. Abstract art, much like cubism, futurism, and fauvism, was developed in the earlier years of the twentieth century. Non–objective artists focus more on the colors, textures, size, shapes, and processes of a painting rather than actually portraying a certain scene, person, object, or landscape from the natural world. Throughout the first decade of the twentieth century, a group of young painters, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque developed something which was to revolutionize modern art. In 1907 Pablo Picasso painted the huge canvas "les Demoiselles d'Avignon " Both his laborious preparation for it has confirmed his dedication towards it so. The painting represents not only a new phase in Picassos art but the beginning of truly modern art. It is also the first cubist work. In this painting he used distortion of female's body and geometric forms in an innovative way, It also shows the influence of African art on Picasso. I fell in love with his art when I visited the DMA as a child with my family. He had an exhibition there and I immediately was drawn in by the vibrant colors and chaotic images; but one caught my eye and I couldn't look away. An unknown factor was just drawing me in to look over the whole piece, to document every line and curve. The piece was a lot taller than me, so I was there for a while. There's just this different feeling I can't really explain, you can really see all the details, hard work, and effort he put into his work. Seeing this piece again really brought back the memories from before. Of course it wasn't the same surroundings around me as before, but I felt as if all time stood still and it was just me and the painting. Even though I know the painting up and down I still found new things, whether it be a dimple or a new wooden plank, it intrigued me every time. I appreciate how he could take something so small and turn it into a monumental piece. To be able to tear down something piece by piece and rearrange them into something new where the viewer can still recognize the original object is amazing, that's why KAWS is my favorite artist. • 21. Art In The Modern World Mankind has gone through many challenges and hardships to get to where they presently are. As a result, modern humans are completely different from the first humans that walked on Earth. However, there has been a couple of things that have prevailed even after all these changes, and one of them is art. Art has always been present in the history of humankind, from ancient civilizations to the modern society. But, what makes art so important that it continues on through history? The book Station Eleven, written by Emily St. John Mandel, explores the importance of art, in which it narrates the lives of various people that are connected by Arthur, a celebrity who dies in chapter one, before and twenty years after the Georgian Flu incident. The book depicts that even though the circumstances in the old and new world are different, people in both worlds have a desire to pursue the creation of art. The creation and final work of art is essential in human lives because art provides a way to express one's emotions, art provides satisfaction to both the creator and viewer, and it immortalizes the subject so that it can be remembered throughout generations. Therefore, as a result of the outcomes of art, humans will always have a desire to create art in spite of all the circumstances. To begin with, art is used to express one's feelings. Miranda, Dr. Eleven's author, was considerably wealthy, however, regardless of all her wealth, she still needed an outlet to express herself, and that was her comic, Dr. Eleven. She used art to express her uncomfortableness in her new life. For example, she wrote that Dr. Eleven thought "we were not meant for this world. I returned to my city, to my shattered life and damaged home, to my loneliness, and tried to forget the sweetness of life on Earth" (105). That was how Miranda felt after she figured out that Arthur was having an affair with Elizabeth. After she married Arthur, she felt that "she'll never belong here no matter how hard she tries. These are not her people. She is marooned on a strange planet" (92), in the same way, Dr. Eleven thought that "he wasn't meant for this world". • 23. The Art Of Modern, Modern And Traditional African Art Modern and Traditional African Art Every region has their own way of expressing different aspects of their culture. Art can be Used to preserve the heritage and traditions of specific civilizations. African art specifically uses Sculptures, engravings, paintings, and crafts to depict different parts of the African peoples' life Style. The term African art refers to these different forms of art that derive from native Africans And the continent of Africa. Sculpture of Africa, which forms the largest part of primitive art, can be seen as early as 500 BC in the Nok culture which was named from the village in Nigeria where pottery figures of this kind were first found. The way the tradition started for Africa was from the Nok statuettes. Nok statuettes are mainly of human subjects. Made of terracotta, they combine strong formal elements with a complete disregard for precise anatomy. Their expressive quality places them at the start of the African sculptural tradition. African artist have started making sculptures in 500 bc but for most of their sculptures most of them do not last a huge period of time. Most African objects bear neither labels nor signatures, and unfortunately it is impossible to date them precisely or to identify makers. The longest surviving tradition of African sculpture is figures in terracotta. They are made by an element, Cast metal, and is the only other material to withstand the continent's termites. Shortly after it became a popular postage stamp, while finally becoming a sculpture in 1970. The idea behind this work of art originated when the Museum of Modern Art asked Indiana to design a Christmas card. He reflected upon his nomadic childhood, remembering posters he had frequently seen at a Christian Science churches with the words "God is love (Robert Indiana Works.)" He took this concept of love and stacked the LO on top of the VE in red, green, and blue, and added further interest by tilting the O. While this became a popular icon in the United States and beyond, Indiana refused to copyright his famous image and variations of it. Since this image was being rapidly reproduced by the public, many people incorrectly labeled Indiana as a sell out, even though he made very little money from his famous LOVE sculpture (Wilde.) Robert Indiana, birth name Robert Clark, was born in New Castle, Indiana in 1928. Being praised for his artwork by his elementary school teacher is what motivated him to pursue the career of art, leading him to join the Airforce for three years and after attend the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland (Biography Robert Indiana.) They were controlled by the academy and painted in a way that mainstream society recognized. Many of their paintings depicted scenes of mythology and church. Many artists began to create artworks to explore the concept of symbolism. When standing in front the painting, one would spontaneously be attracted by those swirls and would follow one swirl to another. These elements make the painting seems to be fluid and abstract. The yellow crescent moon at the upper right corner is blight and mild. It softens the painting to convey a sense of serenity. Compared to other Impressionist paintings, Starry Night is somehow different: van Gogh used very expressive color and distorted form to give the viewers a very bright picture. Van Gogh wrote a letter to his brother to point out that compared to other Impressionist artists of that time, he utilized "exaggeration in terms of composition." He uses techniques such as surrealism to draw those swirls. In Starry Night the landscape seems to be a way to convey the artist's emotion. I believe that the fight van Gogh had against his mental illness is reflected in the painting. When looking at the upper sky in the painting, there is a strong contrast between the sky and the stars, similar to what van Gogh experienced that time: his illness and his hope to recover. Van Gogh painted the village in dark color but on the contrary, he used bright color to draw the windows. • 29. The Influence Of Modern Art Is modern art affecting our American Economy, or any economy for that manner, in a terrible way? After all, these wealthy individuals are spending their hard earned bills, hundreds upon thousands upon millions of it in some piece of art that doesn't make any sense to anyone but the maker. This could lead to a huge break, that these supposedly "grimey" buyers are making our economy go down the toilet, and it could be on them. Art in itself is a very inspiring investment, but the fact that these artists that spit out works that don't put any effort or passion into it are making the green show more readily than more passionate artists. Modern art sales may be affecting our economy with their meaning leading to quick production, their odd "cult worship" making it understandable to those who purchase it, inflating their ego so to speak, and the types of sales types where the money goes and how it is made. How art these works created so quickly, and what is the norm as far as meaning goes? The whole of Modern art is abstract pieces, meaning art that is very hard to comprehend as far as the rational mind goes. Bruce Hinrichs, a professor, psychologist, and artist himself at University of Illinois, studied the ideology and the mind behind Modern Art. Hinrichs claims that "More than any preceding artistic style or aesthetic, Modernism epitomizes the emergence of a deliberate cultural and social agenda. " (Pg 22). The Influence Of Local ' Primitive ' Art On A Modern Artist The Influence of Local "Primitive" Art on a Modern Artist Modern art has been influenced by "primitive" art from Africa and the Indian Islands but Barbara Hepworth was influenced by the hills and landscape around here. Her work Simple Form, 1937 (fig. 1) is reflective of the landscape and the rock outcropping in the area around where she grew up. This artist did not have to look to a different country for "primitive" art to inspire her work. The primitive artists also seem to have been inspired by these same outcroppings of rocks in much the same way. Like other modern artists Hepworth was breaking down the form to its essential form.Hepworth expressed that it was the landscape of her childhood that impressed upon her and where she looked to for inspiration. When Hepworth talks about the landscaped that inspired her work from early memories in her autobiography. Hepworth's father would take her on drives in the countryside. It is quite possible these Bridestones are apart of that inspiration. Hepworth rights about these memories and says "Above all, there was the sensation of moving physically over the contours of fulnesses and concavities, through hollows and over peaks–feeling, touching, seeing, through mind and hand and eye" Hepworth's family was very loving and supporting of her and her parents made sacrifices for Hepworth to every advantage she could. Plan of Investigation World War I was a war that shocked the world and brought about new emotions that created a large wave of "–isms" as well as the "lost generation" of writers. Modern art was catalyzed by World War I and without a thorough study of the various forms of art that resulted from it, modern art and the tremendous effect that World War I had on the people of the world cannot be fully understood. This historical investigation will cover a few aspects of the art that resulted from World War I so that a general idea of the emotions shared by the people of the world can be known. A few paintings that represent specific movements will be studied to understand the artistic movement. A number of museum exhibitions will be studied along with government websites, databases, and museum websites, especially from the Museum of Modern Art. By the time World War One broke out, Duchamp was disgusted by the works of other artists, claiming that they were working to only please the eyes and that there was no real meaning behind their works. Its exhibits have been a major influence in creating and stimulating popular awareness of modern art and its accompanying diversity of its styles and movements. The museum's outstanding collections of modern painting, sculpture, drawings, and prints range from Impressionisms to current movements. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barr submitted the concept of what was to become of the museum. It had to be organized as a multi– departmental structure each devoted for Architecture and Design, Photography, Film and Video, and they should stand side by side with traditional arts such as Painting and Sculpture. Architect Philip Johnson built on this idea. The multi–departmental structure seemed to best fit with the burgeoning International Style, a modernist architectural movement from which Philip Johnson belonged. In this architecture, buildings are designed with simple geometric lines and clean, precise surfaces and with minimum decoration. Walls are made almost entirely of glass, known as curtain walls–a signature Johnson was known for–that are used to give the building a light and airy appearance. The Museum of Modern of Art was the first to use the words "International Style", which was a fitting term to introduce modernist arts to the world. Johnson and another renowned architect Henry–Russell Hitchcock organized a major show under the title "Modern Architecture: International Exhibition". There they described the International Style that expresses several design principles, that concerns with volume rather than mass and solidity, regularity instead of axial symmetry, and the proscription of "arbitrary applied decoration". Modern Islamic Art Essay Moving on towards the new modern Islamic art form which has been recently integrated, has adopted elements from both the traditional Islamic art and modern contemporary art. Therefore, to understand it, modern contemporary art needs to be established as well. According to Wolf, "Modern art represents an evolving set of ideas among a number of painters, sculptors, writers, and performers who – both individually and collectively – sought new approaches to art making." (Wolf) As well, modern art embraces the technological advancements of the modern age which allows artists to display new innovative ways of art. • 39. Modern Art : Traditional Art Then And Now Traditional Art then and now When thinking of traditional art I tend to imagine the grandiose oil paintings or gestural sculptures of figures displayed in the various national galleries I have visited, this to me, is what I think of being 'traditional' in terms of art. A more general description of traditional art is; "Art that is a part of the culture of a group of people, skills and knowledge of which are passed down through generations from master craftsmen to apprentices." (www.yourdictonary.com, 14/11/2017). whereas I do to a extent agree with this statement, I am however conscious that in the current day the term 'traditional art' is used in opposition with digital art. So therefore in the digital era traditional art can be seen as an art form that is created with a physical and tangible medium, usually painting or sculpture, as opposed to art created using digital means. Art has been around since the dawn of man, as a form of expression, a way to make sense of the world. From the primitive animal paintings in caves to the beautifully intricate and highly skilled oil paintings by artist like Titian and Rembrandt during the high Renaissance. Oil paintings have always had a tangibility to them, they exist in the world as a physical object, one that is displayed usually with great intention. In galleries they are held in high esteem as objects of value and prestige. Nonetheless traditionally art was usually in generality displayed two different types of places, ... Cubism looks as if the painting was build with blocks. Artists used blocks and geometric shapes to form figures of men and women. There was no certain color scheme, however colors were usually very different in order to distinguish parts of the body. Anatomy was jumbled, but bodies were clear and visible. Pablo Picasso is known to be a mastermind of the art world. He essentially invented cubism and contributed to the advancement of modern art. Les Demoiselles d'Avignon is a painting that shows five nude ladies all posing different ways. All of them have very different faces and body shapes, something that was common during Cubism. The women are formed out of geometric shapes, but their forms are definite. Georges Braque was the neighbor of Pablo Picasso and he took Cubism on a different path. Instead of making the shapes 2D, he used light and perspective to make shapes appear 3D. Man with a Guitar is very difficult to distinguish a figure, unlike Picasso's works. If you look closely and focus on different points, you can see a man playing a guitar. The 3D shapes and dark colors give it a slight heavy–hearted feel. • 53. Modern Music : Is Music An Art? To most people in the 21st century, kicking back and pressing play on a playlist full of pop and rap music is an enjoyable pastime, however some people argue that modern music can no longer be considered an art. Music is a very opinion based topic so it is very difficult to discuss without disagreement although claiming that today's popular music genres can no longer be classed as an art is blatant disrespect. Art is defined by the creation process, not whether people find it interesting; today's celebrities do care a lot about public appearances although the deeper meaning behind their clothing, voice and choice of words forges the publicity into the art itself; music's ability to reach large audiences and raise awareness of issues is still used heavily within today's music. Art is the application of human creative skill and imagination and can come in the form of any sense such as visuals or sounds. Classical music is thought to be a form of art because of the creative combination of notes being played on multiple instruments. Modern day genres like pop and hip– hop uses the same creative thinking and combining of instruments, however they often use pre– recorded instrumental notes and insert them into a musical program to perfect the beat. The modern technology allows artists and producers to record a beat, rhythm, chorus or verse and repeat it without minor differences. The programs also open new possibilities such as repeating the same word or phrase in the background of a song, this is known as an ad–lib and has become a popular trend in hip–hop music. Although pop, rap and hip–hop may not always use authentic instruments in the studio, it is still the same creative thinking and imagination that is put into use as that of a classical musician which makes an art an art. The United States is the home of pop–culture where fans flock to see their favourite rap and pop artists perform or make public appearances. Abby H. from The Huffington Post claims "Pop and rap music has evolved into a shallow, image–obsessed industry that conforms to what the public wants to hear and see, eliminating the focus on the actual music.". The transition between the 19th and 20th century has brought further development of modernistic ideas, concepts and techniques in art. Cubism About 1909 the implications of Cézanne's highly organized yet revolutionary spatial structures were expanded by Picasso and Braque, who invented an abstract art of still lives converted into shifting volumes and planes. • 57. Art And Modern Art : The Evolution Of Aestheticism The 19th century was a time of great progress in art, as well as an age of exploration in how women were portrayed in painting. It was a period in which "modern art" as we presently define it truly began to develop. Without nineteenth century artists such as William Holman Hunt, John Waterhouse, and Gustave Klimt, there is a significant chance that what we know as the art scene today would be radically different. This was an era that shaped the medium of studio art into one with great creative freedom. The majority of the late 19th century art that I will be discussing tonight falls under the category of Aestheticism, or art that seeks to express what is beautiful. To understand the origins of Aestheticism, one must first hear a brief history of the mainstream art traditions that led to this change in values. Until around 1850, Academies of art ruled the art scene and defined what was beautiful and what could be considered art. Academies included the French Academy and the Royal Academy of Art in Great Britain, which were both government organizations that controlled the education and exhibition of art. Any artist who was not trained and supported by these academies could not have a successful career because they would not be accepted into the salons, or annual exhibitions organized by the Academy, where art was displayed and purchased. Realistic depictions of the reality surrounding us has basically surrendered its place for endeavors to truly pass on the craftsman's internal world straightforwardly through the assorted variety of colors, shapes, and the means of visual depiction, which is generally significant. In this manner, the inquiry emerges: in what capacity would it be advisable for one to truly assess bits of present day workmanship given that customary criteria of evaluation do not make a difference for this situation? Unlike traditional art, where one can make judgments and accusations about an artist's skills, composition, and the scene. Present day art ought to explicitly be assessed in a somewhat unique way. Despite the fact that there are fundamentally various masterful laws and tenets, any appraisal made about a bit of artwork generally stays subjective. My belief is that one can most easily explain why someone really enjoys a particular piece of art, but will for all intents and purposes not be able to thoroughly persuade those who whole heartedly disagree with them or for the most part have no artistic taste, which essentially is quite significant. The conflict between the two is caused by their individualized concept of what modernity is at the beginning of the 20th century. By standing in a gallery with both German classical art and degenerate art, degenerate being a synonym to expressionist art used by Nazis, and having them beg for attention one can feel an unexplained tension surrounding him. When present in the "German vs Degenerate Art" gallery, one can notice the effort put by the artists who promote the idea of updated classical artworks in context of German political taste; and at times this effort is just so obvious that it takes away from the painting itself. For instance, Udo Wendel's The Art of Newspaper, 1939 and Adolf Wissel's The Sculptor August Waterbeck, 1932 are two paintings that resemble the German ideal art, and both seems to loosen from its beauty due to the immense effort placed by the artists to make it look more classical and more perfect than it already is. Both paintings depict modern day people painted in a classical style, as close to perfection as it can be done, and in both paintings there is an additional classical element as part of the composition, either a greco sculpture or an art book open on the page of roman art. In contrast, the Kimball Art Museum's purpose was to display the Kimball family's extensive collection and preserve it for future generations (Loud, 1987, p. 15). The initial collection was comprised of late–renaissance and baroque work which contrasted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kahn's vaulted skylights created unique, filtered, light that showcased the art and played an important role in the museum's innovative design (Loud, 1987, p, 44). The one–story museum also created rooms that created harmony with the art and were void of unnecessary decorative elements or details (Loud, p.1987, p. 34). Additionally, instead of a large, sprawling royal palace, the Museum of Modern Art's vertical design fit into the crowded city (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 60). The interior spaces were reminiscent of the original townhouse structure with multiple stories and shorter ceiling height (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 58). In comparison to the Louvre, the gallery spaces did not feature grand halls as the modernist architects rejected the Beaux–Arts traditional elements (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 59). The style of the Museum of Modern Art symbolizes the "ideological aims" of the original design (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 51). The original facade is one of the only features that remains to this day (Ricciotti, 1985, p.74). The results of different tastes and backgrounds resulted in a building that is based on variations of the international style and more towards modernism (Ricciotti, 1985, p. 72). Recent renovations demonstrate respect to the original design and its significant past (Ricciotti, 1985, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Art In The Modern Era The modern era was brought about in the mid–nineteenth century by the industrial revolution in Western Europe. New technologies and the advancement of comfort amenities would change the way that people lived daily lives. Many individuals would move from agricultural areas into cities, changing from simple lives focused on family and farming into the dense lifestyles of city life. With such drastic changes, artists (specifically painters) were drawn to a different type of landscape paintings, which would involve new styles and techniques that would change the way art would be produced for a century. In the years before the modern era, the art academy had recognized movements such as the Renaissance and Baroque eras, the celebration of the Rococo style, and the ideal paintings of Neoclassicism. However, artists at the time, did not paint what was before them objectively, but instead focused on what they perceived the scenes to look like. Amongst new developments, photographic technology became a standard for realistic images, and thirty years down the road, it would become the most accurate way to capture a scene. The largest potential threat photography posed to the painters of the modern era, was that the camera was becoming more common and accessible to the public, who did not need years of instruction and discipline to operate. This new technology, that could capture scenes with unmatched detail from sculpture, paint, or drawing, forced the artists to change ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Parr's Influence On Modern Art SKINS WITHIN "How do you make a picture that works as art, but still refers to a person, to their life, to them...?"(Whitely, 2008). The works of famous artists such as Mike Parr and Frida Kahlo reflect Whitley's quote, as their artwork frequently explores their own individuality in an attempt to grasp the 'self'. The way that they portray aspects of their identity have had a major influence on modern art. Kahlo and Parr are successful in exploring their emotional states of mind and cultural identities through the manipulation of imagery, techniques and media in order to illustrate important aspects of their lives. The Pool of Blood V (1988) The Pool of Blood V is one of many self–portraits that Parr had created throughout his artistic career, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "There have been two great accidents in my life. One was the train the other was Diego. Diego was by far the worst." (Kahlo, 1940). The double self–portrait depicts a vision of how Kahlo perceived herself during this time. Kahlo depends on the symbolism of the two exposed hearts illustrated in order to communicte this concept. The two are holding hands and both of their hearts are able to be seen. On the left is the Frida whose heart has been left broken by Rivera, and it appears that she is bleeding out, leaving her weak and vulnerable. This is symbolic of her emotonal pain during the time of her and Rivera's separation, and the loneliness she felt with him no longer in her life. The Frida on the right is portrayed as much the opposite. Her exposed heart is seemingly whole and strong, she holds in her hand a small portrait of Rivera. This displays a more independent version of herself whom Rivera loved. Kahlo often would incorporate aspects of her Mexican heritage into her paintings and it is represented in The Two Fridas. On the right she is dressed in tradtional Mexican attire, but as her heart is broken she strays away from her cultural background, as she wears a European style wedding dress. Kahlo had never portrayed herself as anything other than how she actually was, and she never made attempts to erase her cultural ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
