He enrolled into the Wellington House Academy. Around this same time, in the year of 1827,
Charles rejoined the workforce and became the clerk of an attorney at the law firm of Ellis and
Blackmore. He did tasks every day such as keeping the cash fund, running errands, and delivering
documents. After working as a clerk for less than a year he took another job at the law firm of
Charles Molley. Working with law for a little over two years brought him to the conclusion that this
sort of job was not for him. So, he decided to go for court stenographer, a job that required learning

Dickens, at the beginning of his life, was very optimistic, his novels having "serious themes and
plots" but also having "enough humor to keep [them] entertaining" (Collins). Later on in life,
however, Dickens writing became less lighthearted, with his "view of Victorian society, and perhaps
of the world, [having grown] darker" and his "character and plots seem[ing] to emphasize the evil
side of human experience" more and more (Collins). Since Dickens style of writing was mostly

Anton was born January 29, 1860, in Taganrog, Russia. While growing up his father, Pavel had
problems keeping money while his mother stayed at home and read stories to Anton and his five
siblings. Fifteen years in 1875 later Anton's family moved to Moscow for the closer of his business

In the Victorian era, poverty became due to many reasons; a population increase, the search of
employment, and a depressing state of the shortage of housing. All of these points had a direct
impact to why there was the less fortunate in an English society. The nineteenth century saw a huge
growth in the population of Great Britain, and this brought the poverty line lower and lower in cities
such as London. Dickens, being affected by this, had a great impact on helping the less fortunate in
the Victorian time period by bringing to life the realism of the problems that the paupers, criminals,

The motif of doubling has been repeatedly shown throughout the book. Charles Dickens finds
numerous ways to show the constant pattern of doubling from using children, to using exact
metaphors. Life could either be one way or the other. Factors in life an either duplicate themselves
or oppose themselves. He uses this repeated motif to emphasize the theme of life being a parallel
universe. The prominent quote in Book 1, is the perfect example of how he does it" it was the best of
times, it was the worst of times." This well known quote continues on by saying " it was the age of
wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it

sees what Jerry does. The next day he asks his father and informs that he wants to be like his father
when he grows up. This shows doubling in more than one way. Initially, his name is Young Jerry.
Secondly, he wants to follow in his father's footsteps. Another child to parent pair is Young Lucie
Manette and her mother Lucie. Lucie Manette grew up without a father, he was in prison. When he
was released she was all grown up, however she didn't let that affect their father–daughter
relationship. As Lucie grows up and marries a man named Charles Darnay, they have a girl named
Lucie, in other words, Young Lucie. Charles Darnay flees to France and ends up in prison, trying to
resolve the issue the Manettes beg for mercy but none is granted. This shows the pattern of doubling
because now Young Lucie will experience growing up without a father, just like her mother did.

Many people say that writing is nothing more than a way of the author to express himself. This is
true in many cases but none as much as in Great Expectations. In many ways the
narrator/protagonist Pip is Charles Dickens in body and mind. While there are many differences
between the story and Charles Dickens life there remains one constant. This constant is the way Pip
as the narrator feels, because these feelings are Dickens 's own feelings about the life he lead. Since
Great Expectations was written towards end of Charles Dickens life, he was wiser and able to make
out the mistakes and regrets of his life, and Pip experiences them all. While Great Expectations is
seen as a tragic book not many people really think about where these themes come from, and when
the book is read with the knowledge of Dickens life it truly reveals new meanings.
Charles John Huffam Dickens born February 7th, 1812, was born a poor man. When Charles
Dickens was 12 his father John Dickens was sent to jail because he had too much debt. Since
Charles father was sent to jail Charles had to drop out of school and join a shoe–blacking company.
When Charles no longer had to work he felt betrayed by his parents for making him do what was
their rightful job, taking care of the family. He thought that the second he started working for that
company his youth was gone. Once his father had received the family inheritance Charles was able

Throughout Oliver Twist, Charles Dickens uses his characters and props to symbolize purity, even
though the environment would seem to denote everything and everyone. Incontro–vertibly, some
certainly conform to their environment; for example, as part of the lower class, Fagin and Sikes turn
to thieving, lying, and even murder, instead of earning an honest living. Throughout the first half of
the book, Dickens leads one to believe Nancy follows the same pat–tern. However, as the plot

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, on the Southern coast of England. He was brought up in a
poor household so indebted that his father, John Dickens, was sent to jail. In 1827, at the age of 15,
Dickens was working, attending the theater, and taking acting lessons. In 1836 (age 24), Dickens

did pay the 4d. stamp duty.
Despite having to charge the heavy tax imposed on newspapers, the True Sun sold 30,000 copies a
day. In his articles, Dickens used his considerable knowledge of what went on in the House of
Commons to help promote the cause of parliamentary reform. Charles Dickens was pleased when
Parliament eventually agreed to pass the 1832 Reform Act, however, like most radicals, he thought
it did not go far enough. The new reformed House of Commons passed a series of new measures
including a reduction in newspaper tax from 4d. to 1d. As a result, the circulation of the True Sun
increased to over 60,000.
In 1833 Dickens had his first story published in the Monthly Magazine. Using the pen–name of

Chronicle. These stories were so popular that they were collected together and published as a book
entitled Sketches by Boz (1836).
The publisher, William Hall, now commissioned Dickens to write The Pickwick Papers in twenty
monthly installments. This was followed by Oliver Twist, published in Bentley's Miscellany (1837–
