In this paper, the voltage stability of the power system is studied during fault conditions. Enhancement of the system’s stability will be achieved by utilizing Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) controllers at the best place in the system. The optimum placement of (FACTS) controllers occurred on the most affected bus by the fault in the system (weakest bus). Two approaches have been used in this study to effectively obtain the best location of the (FACTS) controllers in the system. The first method is based on computing the deviation which occurs in the active power and reactive power due to the fault at each load bus at a time. Whereas the second method is performed through exploiting a MATLAB fuzzy set technique utilizing two indices: Line Flow Index (LFI) and Voltage Profile Index (VPI) during fault and steady-state conditions. The results show that both of these indices resulted in the same bus as the best location. Remedial actions in the attempt at improving in the stability of the power system are discussed taking the advantage of using (FACTS) compensation (SVC) and (STATCOM) at the most vulnerable system buses. In this work, MATLAB program with an IEEE 24 bus system is examined.

In the last 25 years, technocrats have made extensive research on STATCOM technology due to which, many STATCOM controllers based on the self-commutating solid-state voltage-source converter VSC have been developed and commercially put in operation to control system dynamics under stressed conditions. Because of its many attributes, STATCOM has emerged as a qualitatively superior controller relative to the line commutating static VAR compensator SVC . This controller is called with different terminologies as Static Compensator advanced static VAR compensator, advanced static VAR generator or static VAR generator, Static Condenser, synchronous solid-state VAR compensator, VSC-based SVC or self-commutated SVC or static synchronous compensator SSC or S2C . This paper presents, the performance of STATCOM placed at midpoint of the two machine power system and compared with the performance of SVC. The comparison of various results found for the different type of faults (single line, double line & three phase fault) occur in long transmission line, and their removal by using shunt FACTS devices is analysed. Computer simulation results under a severe disturbance condition (three phase fault) for different fault clearing times, and different line lengths are analyzed. Both controllers are implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results shows that the STATCOM with conventional PI controller installed with two machine three bus systems provides better damping oscillation characteristics in rotor angle as compared to two machine power system installed with SVC. The transient stability of two machine system installed with STATCOM has been improved considerably and post settling time of the system after facing disturbance is also improved.

The maintenance and reliability of the power system has become a major aspect of study. The
solution is the use of FACTS devices especially the use of UPFC. Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC)
is the most widely used FACTS device to control the power flow and to optimize the system stability in the
transmission line. It is used to control the power flow in the transmission systems by controlling the
impedance, voltage magnitude and phase angle. This controller offers advantages in terms of static and
dynamic operation of the power system. The UPFC with its various modes of operation is understood.
Second, the operation of control system used in its converters is also studied. Finally by help of modeling
of a power system in SIMULINK / MATLAB SIMPOWERSYSTEM and by installing single phase UPFC
in transmission link, its use as power flow controller and voltage injection and constructing a lab scale
model of UPFC is discussed also.

Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions.
