. First, George Washington is known as the “Father of our Country” because he lead the fight for American independence, helped form the nation’s government, and was the first president. Thomas Jefferson was the main writer of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted in 1776. He was the third president, and during his presidency he was responsible for the Louisiana Purchase. The U.S. bought the Louisiana Territory from France, which doubled the size of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt was a conservationist. During his presidency, he set aside five national parks, 18 national monuments, and millions of acres of national forest. He opened world economic opportunities by leading the construction of the Panama Canal. Last, Abraham Lincoln was the president during the Civil War, one of the most difficult times in U.S. history. He kept the country together and approved the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which ended slavery.
