World Soil Day is held annually on 5 December to spread awareness on the importance of healthy soil and to promote sustainable management of soil resources. This slide deck is my presentation made to Vemana Institute technology, Blore students and faculty on 21st Dec 2022.

5. BACKGROUND
World Soil Day (WSD) is held annually on 5 December
as a means to focus attention on the importance of
healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable
management of soil resources.
An international day to celebrate soil was
recommended by the International Union of Soil
Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. Under the leadership of the
Kingdom of Thailand and within the framework of the
Global Soil Partnership,
In December 2013, the UN General Assembly
designated 5 December 2014 as the first official
World Soil Day and celebrated each year ever since.

6. Did you
know?
Some important facts about
soil usecase & status
95% of our food comes from
soil.
1/3rd of all soil available is
degraded!
18 naturally occuring
elements are required by
plants. Thereof 15 are
supplied by soil
Agri produce should be
increased by 60% by 2050 to
meet global demand
I and you can do a lot to
help the World switch to
sustainable practices!!
Up to 58% more food could
be produced through
sustainable soil mgmt

Why World Soil Day?
LIKE US, PLANTS NEED A BALANCED AND VARIED SUPPLY OF
NUTRIENTS IN APPROPRIATE AMOUNTS TO BE HEALTHY.
AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS LOSE NUTRIENTS WITH EACH
HARVEST, AND IF SOILS ARE NOT MANAGED SUSTAINABLY,
FERTILITY IS PROGRESSIVELY LOST, AND SOILS WILL PRODUCE
NUTRIENT-DEFICIENT PLANTS.
SOIL NUTRIENT LOSS IS A MAJOR SOIL DEGRADATION PROCESS
THREATENING NUTRITION. IT IS RECOGNIZED AS BEING AMONG
THE MOST CRITICAL PROBLEMS AT A GLOBAL LEVEL FOR FOOD
SECURITY AND SUSTAINABILITY ALL AROUND THE GLOBE.
8. OVER THE LAST 70 YEARS, THE LEVEL
OF VITAMINS AND NUTRIENTS IN
FOOD HAS DRASTICALLY DECREASED,
AND IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 2 BILLION
PEOPLE WORLDWIDE SUFFER FROM
LACK OF MICRONUTRIENTS, KNOWN
AS HIDDEN HUNGER BECAUSE IT IS
DIFFICULT TO DETECT.
Why
Soil
Day?
9. SOIL DEGRADATION INDUCES SOME
SOILS TO BE NUTRIENT DEPLETED
LOSING THEIR CAPACITY TO
SUPPORT CROPS, WHILE OTHERS
HAVE SUCH A HIGH NUTRIENT
CONCENTRATION THAT REPRESENT A
TOXIC ENVIRONMENT TO PLANTS
AND ANIMALS ACTUALLY POLLUTING
THE ENVIRONMENT

11. What is Soil?
SOIL IS THE GROUND YOU STAND ON!
IT IS MADE UP OF INORGANIC PARTICLES AND
ORGANIC MATTER (OF ONCE LIVING
ORGANISMS)
SOIL PROVIDES THE STRUCTURAL SUPPORT,
NUTRITION, MOISTURE AND ALLOWS
BREATHING OF ROOTS
SOIL VARIES VASTLY IN IT'S PHYSICAL,
CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

13. What is the Living Soil?
IMPROVE SOIL TILTH – SOIL'S ABILITY TO SUPPORT PLANT
GROWTH
DECOMPOSE THE ORGANIC MATTER IN TO COMPOST FULL OF
NUTRIENTS FOR PLANTS
HAVE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEM TO SUPPORT ONE
OTHER
HAVE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH PLANTS TO FOOD AND
SECURITY
PROTECT THE ROOTZONE FROM PATHOGENS & OTHER HARMFUL
ORGANISMS
SOIL BY NATURE IS FULL OF LIFE!
IT IS HOME FOR A DYNAMIC LIVING SYSTEM
MOST SOIL ORGANISMS ARE INVISIBLE BUT HELP IN MANY WAYS
THE COMMUNITY OF SOIL ORGANISMS IS VARIED, VERSATILE, AND
ADAPTABLE TO CHANGING CONDITIONS AND FOOD SUPPLIES.
