THINK BEFORE YOU THROW !!!
To grow
crops
farmer has
to plough
his field
From time
to time, the
farmer has
to sprinkle
fertilizers
and
pesticides
on his crops
When the
crop is
ready, the
farmer has
to harvest
his crop.
After
harvesting,
the farmer
stores the
grains in the
warehouses.
……..and
you easily
throw
it????
Why To Reduce Food Waste ???
1. A study has shown that by 2050 we could run out of vegetation
because of consumption, pollution, global warming, and spoils.
2. It is important to save food now before 2050 so it does not happen
sooner.
3. People are hungry even though some people throw away their
lunch everyday.
4. Food prices are expected
to rise by up to 84% by 2050
solely because of how climate
change will affect production.
5. Its also leading to a massive
amount of money wastage already,
with each household in the UK
Alone throwing away approximately
$638 worth of perfectly edible
food.
It goes without saying that the later
food is wasted along the chain, the
greater is its environmental impact,
because then we also have to take into
consideration the energy and natural
resources expended in processing,
transporting, storing and cooking it. If
included in a list of countries ranked
according to their greenhouse
emissions, food waste would come in
the third spot, right after USA and
China.
Food waste that ends up in landfills produces
a large amount of methane – a more powerful
greenhouse gas than even CO2. For the
uninitiated, excess amounts of greenhouse gases
such as methane, CO2 and chlorofluorocarbons
absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s
atmosphere, causing global warming and climate
change.
With agriculture accounting for 70 percent of
the water used throughout the world, food
waste also represents a great waste of freshwater
and ground water resources. It is said that a volume
of water roughly three times the volume of Lake
Geneva is used just to produce food that is not eaten.
By throwing out one kilogram of beef, you are
essentially wasting 50,000 liters of water that were
used to produce that meat.
Around 1.4 billion hectares of land, which
is roughly 1/3 the world’s total
agricultural land area, is used to grow
food that is wasted. Millions of gallons of
oil are also wasted every year to produce
food that is not eaten and all this does not
even take into account the negative
impacts on biodiversity due to activities
like monocropping and converting wild
lands into agricultural areas.
PREVENTING WASTAGE OF FOOD
1. Fruits that become soft or soggy can be made into a smoothie
or used in a dessert. Vegetables that are close to wilting can be
made into soup or a bake.
2. Keep your kitchen well organized. To avoid dumping things
then forgetting about them reorganize every two weeks
Arrange in a way so that everything is in sight and within easy
reach.
3. Keep rice and noodles in glass containers to help keep them
fresher longer. Arrange them on shelves and make them pretty!!!
5. Check expiration dates on your food to find when it’s the
freshest…..not when it’s bad!! Have a “use it” day each week
to use what’s in your refrigerator.
4. Rather than let leftovers sit in the fridge without a plan for
eating them, freeze them. This goes for meals like soups,
stews, and cooked beans.
6. Share food while eating out. This is a great way to cut down
expenses and at the same time your waistline. Split a meal in
restaurants that you know has portion sizes. Portion sizes
tend to be a little ridiculous and splitting food will prevent
you from being tempted to overeat or throw out food.
