Public Defender Case Summary
We have read in the news recently that there are plenty of public defenders who are facing budget cuts and are in a financial crisis. This can be seen
by a chief public defender in New Orleans who has had to resort to turning clients away. The public defender's office in New Orleans is understaffed,
currently employing 42 overworked lawyers, in relation to the 72 attorneys and 20 investigators it employed in 2008. These go against the standard set
by the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice and the ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Counsel in Death Penalty Cases. The
National Standards point to the caseload maximus prescribed by the National Advisory Commission (NAC) on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, a

Supreme Court case law, and improvements in forensic sciences and criminal justice technologies – all of which increases the time needed to render
effective representation beyond what was established in 1973. For exactly this reason, several experts argue that the NAC standards are far too high,
and that the actual maximum, for felony cases in particular, should be adjusted to well below 150 cases per attorney per

Public Defender Research Paper
Underfunding and overburdening prevents Public Defenders Offices from performing their jobs properly. For example, a 2007 report by the Bureau
of Justice Statistics stated that 40% of all Public Defender Offices had no investigators on their payroll, resulting in lawyers lacking means to
perform research on a specific case, find out the truth of the situation and thus present a strong defense (Farole 1). The position of these defenders is
so dire, in fact, that, an investigation by The Florida Times Union newspaper revealed that Public Defenders in Augusta, Georgia, were forced to work
in leaking mobile offices infested with cockroaches and mold. One Public Defender described the constant perverseness of the conditions:
"Cockroaches crawl up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bail, or, "money or property given as a guarantee that an individual will return to court as directed, after being released from jail," provides yet another
mechanism for the Justice System to lock up the poor (Legal Dictionary). For most middle–class Americans, bail causes no concern–the defendant pays
a fine and awaits his trial date as a free man. While appearing perfectly reasonable, the intention of bail, however, has become fraudulent, immoral, and
arguably criminal, incommensurably abusing the impoverished. A report by the Council of Economic Advisers along with the White House articulated
that "concerns are growing about the expanding use of monetary penalties, which disproportionately impact poor defendants and offenders" and
examined possible solutions (Council of Economic Advisors). With apoverty rate of 13.5%, positioning 43.1 million people below the poverty line,
many live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford to pay bail resulting in prison time before sentencing, even for non–violent crimes (Proctor). In fact,
"38.5% of the total prison population were held in custody solely due to their inability to meet the terms of bail" (VanNostrand). In other words,
people can be held for extended periods of time simply due to their lack of ability to pay. This results in people pleading guilty, even while
maintaining their innocence, to get out of jail time. For impoverished people, bail "robs them of the presumption of innocence and their right to a fair
trial"

Comparison: The Avengers And The Black Widow
The Avengers, excellent movie of all times for sure, no opposition. Great story line, great screenplay, and best of all, great characters. The characters'
personalities are amazing together, and even more amazing when studied individually. What makes them so amazing are their very contrasting
characteristics. My primary focus, The Incredible Hulk, and The Black Widow, two opposing forces, so similar yet so different. A great powerful beast
and a beautiful young woman, but do not let body sizes fool you.
First and foremost, The Black Widow possesses no superpowers unlike the Hulk, who transforms into a gigantic green beast when enraged. She does
not have to rely on any super powers in combat, but only relies on her strength, stealth, and knowledge of weaponry. On the ... Show more content on

His anger is so easily triggered even by the smallest of things. In the movie, we find that he has to be cooled down, even by the use of lullabies
which is pretty bizarre to use on the whole has grown up. Without being calmed down, he is accomplished by destroying everything in his way.
The Black Widow seemingly was the only one that was able to take it easy this beast meritoriously. She sang to him to calm him down. To
effectively calm anyone down, one needs to be gentle and gracious themselves. The Black Widow was both soft and kind enough to be able to
handle Hulk, even after he had transformed into a beast, which was very courageous of her as The Hulk could easily tear her to pieces without
thinking twice. It is no wonder that she and Hulk fell in love with each other. Opposite poles attract anyways. In the movie, we see that she is usually
calm and collected even when enraged. She does not act on anger but instead remains quiet and strategies her moves to revenge. Even when Hulk
refuses to keep cool at times, she remains patient and keeps trying to calm him down till she succeeds without getting angry

Personal Statement : Defender Direct Will
Ethan Thomas COB401 / Prof. Stiver Assignment #2 6/14/2015 Introduction By the first of next month, DEFENDER Direct will officially be known
as Defenders. This has been an endeavor lasting months. Each aspect of the company has been contributing to make sure there is a successful transition
into this rebranding strategy. Through analysis and research it is easy to observe how the entire company has properly prepared and affected this
transition. With many moving pieces, Defenders has still stayed true to their goals, values, and mission statement. They are still the top marketer, seller,
and installer of ADT Home Security Systems. Properly titled an Authorized Premier Provider for ADT, Defenders continually strives to constantly grow

New employees are encourage to become growth orientated learners, competitive winners, and humble servants. By understanding and following
these values one can truly grow. We are called to grow and inspire leaders who love and serve people (Defenders, 2015). Leader is emphasized with
the mantra "Everyone is a leader" (Defenders, 2015). A mission statement is created and used to portray larger environment goals and should indirectly
guide individuals within an organization to greater outcomes personally and professionally (Kotler & Armstrong, 2014, p. 63). In this mission
statement, the focus never hits directly on what the company does or accomplishes from a business aspect. By investing so heavily in the employees
themselves, Defenders simplify the business and encourage growth in the individual to reach bigger goals. Defenders have always stressed company
culture and its overall mission. The re–branding has not truly affect what is being implemented, but created more importance on the individual
employees. Each employee is a defender, and the company is properly renaming itself in support of each defender that works for the company. This
internal re–branding was the first piece of the much larger puzzle of interesting the brand to each piece of the company and to the business world. By

Public Defender Thesis
For this upcoming research project, the working title would be "Public Support for Public Defenders: How Income Affects Perception".
Specifically, I want to look at how public approval of public defender's impacts differs based on income and how that affects whether they think
reforms are necessary. Therefore, my research question would be: does income affect the public's perception of the effectiveness and approval of
public defenders? So far two studies have been done that will aid in my research question. The first was a study is entitled "Americans' Views on
Public Defenders and The Right to Counsel", a National Public Opinion Survey conducted for The Right to Counsel National Campaign in March
2017 and provides data on the perceptions of need and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This study looks at those who use the services of public defenders and whether they think they are effective or approval of them. This is a
significant issue for both public policy and California because the public's approval and belief in the effectiveness of a certain services affects how
resources are allocated and whether reforms are implemented. As a current intern at the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office it is clear that
resources are limited compared to those available for say the DA's office, so if the public believes that it is effective regardless of these limitations
then they are less willing to increase resources. On the other side, those from a lower income that are clients of the public defender's office can see
first–hand the limitations of these services and may believe reforms are necessary to increase its effectiveness. While the first study was focused
nationally and the second was focused in Cincinnati, I want to see if California shows similar

Football Narrative Speech
The sun beat down on us. Sweat trickled down our necks.Grass marks stained our jerseys and stuck to us like a wet shirt. I brushed my dark brown
hair out of the way and looked at the game clock, 47 seconds remained and we needed to win. The yellow crossbars glistened in the sun and our goal,
the end zone right below. One play was all that we needed. One pass into the end zone. The score was 27–21. My team was aching, tired, and wore
down. We were still gonna win and nothing would stop us.
I called the play, " Omaha! Omaha!" The receivers scattered to different sides of the field. My offensive linemen huddled in front of me and got into
position. Two receivers on both sides and my running back behind me. What should I do? Should I pass the ball or run the ball in myself? I knew
what to do and was going to accomplish it.
My teammates all huddled around and told me, " Pass the ball through the defenders when I run a slant, time it perfectly."
Someone else told me, "throw towards the end zone, hail mary, I'll catch it for sure. "
So many ideas coming at me at once and had one chance. The referee blew the whistle, as we stood in our formations. I turned towards the crowd,
everyone was cheering, I couldn't let them down. I stood in shotgun mode, farther back from the players and shouted " HIKE" The ball was snapped
to me and I scanned the field for open receivers. The defensive linebackers were trying to get me, but I was well protected. They eyed me with their

An Article About Public Defenders
Alexa Van Brunt, an attorney with the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center at Northwestern Law School, wrote an article about public
defenders. In it she describes why those who cannot afford good lawyers are being misrepresented by public defenders. The main idea she wants to
drive home is that public defenders are underfunded and extremely overworked by excessive caseloads. Hence, they are providing a weaker defense
for their clients. The US Department of Justice indicates that in 2007 and about "73% of county public defender offices exceed the maximum limit of
cases" (Brunt, 2015, para. 2). Public defenders are so overwhelmed by cases that in some instances they can spend less than an hour per case (Brunt,
2015, para. 3).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The justice system is designed in a way that the prosecutor and defense both present their case to best of their capabilities. If people believe that they
had the opportunity to present their side of the story, then they tend to feel more positive about the justice system as a whole. However, if one side is
lacking resources to afford good representation, then the court appoints an attorney, usually a public defender. This defender ends up misrepresenting
the defendant because of the lack of resources to investigate each case properly and time to spear per case. Looking at the first choice which talks
about the rights of the individual versus the common good we conclude that United States operate under the Crime Control Model which advocates for
swift prosecution of defendant in attempts to stop criminal activities from reoccurring. However, if one is clearly misrepresented, then justice cannot
be served. In many cases individuals and their families lose faith in the justice system because they see how insufficient it is. Such disbelief might
correlate with increased recidivism rates and national crime rates in general. The third point talks about the choice whether to discover the truth or to
resolve conflict. Here we touch upon justice and representation as a whole, however, there cannot be justice for all if certain groups of individuals are

Defender Of The Faith By Philip Roth
Defender of faith, is a complex, capably envisioned story depicting a contention of loyalties and portraying the trouble of being a better than average
and impartial individual in a world assail with contradicting needs. In the short story "Defender of the faith" by Philip Roth, we are confronted with
several different conflicts: man vs. himself, as Sergeant Marx is struggling to decide whether he should be a military man, or a Jewish man; man versus
man, with Grossbart continually difficult power and osmosis into the military; and man versus society, as Sergeant Marx is stressed over how his
choices will be gotten in the military group. These contentions all lead to a general topic. The general subject being, that in life, on occasion,
individuals may come in struggle with other people who like to endeavor certain things or circumstances further bolstering their own good fortune. It
might be difficult to choose how to manage these circumstances, particularly in the event that you wind up in a circumstance including a situation.
I believe Roth treats religion as a very serious and delicate subject. Roth treats religion as something that shouldn 't be made as something that should
define us. Roth is attempting the set out the establishment that religion is going to have influence yet it 's not the principle idea that makes a man, it 's
his activities. Roth utilizes Judaism with battle ready belief system to show how individuals living with two strict ways of life together

On August 18, 2017 Marvel's Netflix series Defenders decided to show up featuring all of the netflix marvel characters that we have grown

the Defenders series, so let's begin. Spoilers: We are discussing the first half of the Defenders series. Story: Story is simple, The Hand have set up for a

Which manages to pay off and work beautifully in end when the characters sit down and become more acquainted with each other. Leading into
one of my favorite aspects of the series. Character Dynamics: Speaking broadly for the whole series, if I were to give an example of how the
characters in Defenders play of off each other I would use DC's Suicide Squad as a good comparisons for the characters. To explain this, in the
Suicide Squad movie, there is a scene where all the bad guys sat in a bar and had a drink exchanging bar room talk and typical banter. For me, I
can totally see the Defenders doing something very similar, which they did in episode 4, and it WORKS. This is to be taken as a compliment as
even though the characters have just met each other under extreme circumstances, episode 4 is a pretty much good example of how the main
characters will act towards each other for the entire show. Only Danny and Matt understand or even know about the hand, Jessica and Luke are in a
constant stream of disbelief as soon as magic is involved. The sarcastic quips that have towards each other gives off a very realistic view to it. I can
totally see actually people having conversations and reacting similar to the main characters in the show. Unlike when you compare them to the
Avengers that for me personally, lack those kind of interaction with their characters or at least don't make use of them enough in my opinion(except for

Successful Soccer Defender
How to be a Successful Soccer Defender Defense is the back bone of the team! Defenders must be ready to make a sliding tackle, alert and ready to
back up their teammates in case they make a mistake. Defenders themselves do not have the luxury of making mistakes, since even a small slip on
their part might result in a goal for their opponents, and a loss that their teammates are likely not to forgive. Being a successful defender calls for a
consistent, reliable and sound performance. I've been studying the worlds greatest soccer defenders since I became a defender about 2 years ago.
The best defenders are patient when the offensive player is approaching, they find the right moment to step in or go for the slide tackle causing the
offensive player to lose the ball. They need to anticipate the play, and be one step ahead of the offensive player. Defenders have a hard, often
unappreciated job. They need mental toughness, and determination to succeed. The best way to defend your goal is by being aggressive. Good
defenders are aggressive. They aren't afraid to make strong tackles and use their body. They attack balls with their heads and get in front of shots.
Play so aggressive that players are scared to receive the ball. You want the opposition to fear you. The best defenders are aggressive and fearless but
don't lose... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Always communicate with your other defending teammates. It's important to keep good communication with your teammates because you'll know
who is going to step in and block the shot or who is going to fall back into space just in case they decide they want to play a through ball. Defenders
should coordinate to mark players, double team, and execute an offside trap. When a defender is beaten, someone else needs to cover for him.
Defenders should tell midfielders and other defenders who to mark. A defense with no communication will be no obstacle for the attacking

Defender Direct, Inc.
Defender Direct, Inc. was founded in 1998 by Dave Lindsey. Its headquarters are in Indianapolis, Indiana. Lindsey stared the business out of his home
and "was a privately held company that sold and installed ADT security systems and Dish Network Satellite TV to homeowners in the United States"
(Glinska & Hess, 2009, pg. 8–4). A business that started in a home has now become "the largest security and satellite dealers in the Midwest, generated
$150 million in revenues and ranked 387th on the Inc. 500 list of American Fastest –Growing Companies" (Glinska & Hess, 2009, pg. 8–4). Lindsey
believed that because his employees and the people involved, is why his business continues to grow and be successful. The company continued to put
resources toward their team members to grow in "enthusiasm, optimism, and skills" (Glinska & Hess, 2009, pg. 8–4). Employee training programs
became their main focus and Lindsey claimed that "businesses don't grow–people do" has helped in developing an organizational culture that has
helped in fueling the growth of the company" (Glinska & Hess, 2009, pg. 8–4). In the mid–90's the alarm industry was exploding and Lindsey decided
to take the plunge and opportunity writing a business letter and later signed a contract with ADT as an ADT Authorized Dealer. Lindsey developed a

Overall I agree that defenders in sports play the most important role in the game as well as to their teammates. In general opponents will always
score if defenders aren't visual and competitive. What if we didn't have defenders in sports? I believe if we didn't have defenders in sports there
wouldn't be much of a competition between the two teams and scoring would be a lot easier. Games would also be boring to watch because of how
easy it is to score. Imagining watching a soccer such as Spain in the FIFA World CUPand they get scored on easily which isn't something that happens
frequently because of their strong defense. Spain has been known for conquering all their opponents for their such organized and tactical defense. I
still believe the best defender is Sergio Ramos because he fits the requirements of his good pressure, vision, and tackling/ attacking that's expected.
He is very aggressive and he's a skilled tackler, he'll normally avoid fouling in these scenarios and will often win the ball. Sergio Ramos ranks in the top

Disadvantages Of Private Defence
Donald is the father of twin boys and due to the fact that he was accosted at a traffic light by hijackers, who ordered him out of the car, Donald shot
the hijackers with their firearm. One of the hijackers died whilst the other fled the scene, this all occurred due to the fact that Donald heard the
hijackers planning on taking the children and dropping them off elsewhere.
The issue is whether or not Donald acted lawfully in his actions of shooting the hijackers. Donald did act lawfully due to the fact that he acted in

Gwendolyn Brooks' We Real Cool Essay
Gwendolyn Brooks' "We Real Cool"
The poem 'We Real Cool' by Gwendolyn Brooks is a stream of the thoughts of poor inner city African–Americans who have adopted a hoodlum
lifestyle. Though many can have different interpretations of this poem, it is fair to look at the life and career or the works and influences of Gwendolyn
Brooks.
The life and art of the black American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, began on June 7, 1917 when she was born in Topeka, Kansas. She was the first child
of Keziah Corine Wims and David Anderson Brooks. When she was four, her family moved to their permanent residence on Champlin Avenue in
Chicago. Her deep interest in poetry consumed much of her early life. For instance, Brooks began rhyming at the age of seven. ... Show more content on

After a lifetime of skilled verse writing, Brooks died of cancer in December 2000 when she was 83 years old.
The works of Gwendolyn Brooks has gone through several changes throughout her career. When she first published in 1945, she was eager to be
understood by strangers. In her last two poetical collections, however, she has dumped that attitude and gone ?black?. Her change then led her from
a major publishing house to smaller black ones. While some critics found an angrier tone in her work, elements of protest had always been present
in her writing. Her poetry moves from traditional forms including sonnets, ballads, variations of the Chaucerian and Spenserian stanzas, and the
rhythm of the blues to the most unrestricted free verse. To sum up, the popular forms of English poetry appear in her work, but there is some testing
as she puts together lyric, narrative, and dramatic poetic forms. In her narrative poetry, the stories are simple but usually go beyond the restrictions of
place. In her dramatic poetry, the characters are often memorable because they are everyday survivors not heroes. Her characters are drawn from the
underclass of the nation's black slums. Like many urban writers, Brooks has recorded the impact of city life. However, aside from most committed
naturalists, she does not entirely blame the city for what happens to people. The city is simply an existing force with which people must deal with. The
most dominant theme in Brooks?s work is the

Availability of Legal Representation for Indigent Defendants
The rates of death penalty convictions in the United States are outstanding, and with the growing number of cases going into the criminal justice
system for processing and in accordance with the numbers of death penalty convictions, it can become questionable the type of counsel being provided
to those defendants who are without sufficient income to afford a lawyer for their defense in a capital case, these defendants are known under the
official name of indigent defendants. Questions over the type of counsel that is appointed to indigent defendants have opened due to the high
incarceration rates of minorities in the prison system.
As society moves into an era where issues start to become a matter of publicity and law reforms, the public starts to become more informed and aware
of the differences between having a court–appointed defense attorney versus a hired private defense attorney. The acknowledgment of this issue was
mentioned above, because of high rates of minority incarcerations, researchers started to consider the differences between appointed and private defense.
In terms of the distinctions between a court–appointed attorney and private attorney, differences start to show within several areas, such as the
following; one area includes the fact that private attorneys have the freedom to choose their clients and cases, while

The Game Hex Was Invented By The Danish Mathematician Piet
The game Hex was invented by the Danish mathematician Piet Hein in the 1940s. This game has been of great interest to mathematicians around the
world since its introduction, including Martin Gardner who explores it in chapter eight of his first Scientific American Book of Mathematical
Puzzles and Games (1959). The game is normally played on a board of 11x11 hexagons with two edges labelled black and the other two labelled white.
It is a two–person game in which both players (using black and white counters) attempt to create a chain connecting both of their respective sides of
the board. This chapter will stray away from the basics of Hex and instead explore a more specific aspect of the game: ladders. Topics to be discussed
include general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This knowledge will hopefully allow the player to place ladder escapes (discussed later in the chapter), which will more often than not result in winning
positions for the attacking player. The most common ladder formation, the bottleneck, is one that all players should familiarize themselves with. This
occurs when there is a gap in between two defensive counters, and the attacking player must place a counter in that gap, which ultimately forces a
ladder like the one depicted in figure one on the left. At this point, it would be wise to place an escape in the third row, to the left of where the
ladder is about to form. The reasoning behind this is that the defending player now has to deal with a ladder escape and a possible connection to
counters at the top of the board in C2, D3, and E4. All things considered, an ideal placement for the ladder escape would be C9. Figure two shows
the placement of the red counter on C9 and the computer's response in A10. Can you now determine a placement that would secure a win for the red
player?Ladder escapes, as hinted to in the previous two paragraphs, are of vital importance with regards to ladders and the successful formation of a
connection to the edge. Without the use of them, ladders would continue to extend until reaching an edge and ultimately a victory for the player on the
defensive side of the ladder. Similarly to ladders themselves, ladder escape counters

Overall, the research collected has examined juvenile delinquency, the persistent consequences of incarceration, and suggestive measures from the
Public Defenders that could help reduce recidivism and provide justice for the offenders, the victims and the community. The research highlighted the
crime pattern in young offenders, existing racial disparities in the juvenile criminal justice system and the lack of a proper support structure that
encourages the youth to make bad choices. Studies included in the research demonstrated that most juvenile delinquents belong to underprivileged
backgrounds, where their mental and educational needs are not properly addressed. They don't receive community policing and are more likely to be

relationships within their family or community. In such situations, it would be better to place more services for the youth rather than putting them

News Analysis : A Mockery Of Justice For The Poor Essay
Rachel Mulder
Professor Henry
CCJS 201
1 December 2016
News Analysis Report #2 In the New York Times article, "A Mockery of Justice for the Poor," the author discusses how the poor are cheated in the
criminal justice system. By law, it is mandatory that the government provides an attorney to any defendant facing possible prison time, even if he or
she cannot afford one. However, there are underlying fees that must be paid despite these people being poor. John Pfaff mentions how 43 states are
now requiring indigent defendants to pay at least a portion of their lawyers' fees, even though they had to be appointed one in the first place. Those
who do qualify as indignant may be able to be acquitted, however, they could be convicted for failing to pay for the legal services the Constitution
requires the states to provide for the defendants. Not to mention, spending money on attorneys for the poor amounts to only $2.3 billion – barely even
1% of the $200 billion the government spends annually on the criminal justice system (Pfaff 2016). Not surprisingly, public defenders who are
appointed to these cases are often stripped of resources while tackling multiple other assignments at the same time.
Mr. Pfaff takes his aim at the federal government, proclaiming that they should help fund indigent defense services by making an annual grant of $4
billion to state and local governments. In total, this would only be 0.3% of the federal government's approximate $1.2 trillion budget (Pfaff

The Myth Of Modern Mythology
In old times, humankind has looked to utilize stories to clarify the world in which it lives. Similarly, as old man utilized stories of divine beings and
creatures to clarify the world; superior person utilizes stories of exceptional legends and colossal scoundrels to do likewise (Stuller). Comic books are
modern mythology, in that they are superior man 's strategy for clarifying their general surroundings through the fantastical. The characters frequently
handle such major, philosophical, (Ahrens, Jörn, and Meeting) social and story ideas as the nature of sound and malevolence, man 's inward battle,
the wannabe, the women 's activist, and the rescuer. Wonder Woman is, maybe the most obvious case of a comics as an advanced myth (Smith, 145).
Wonder Woman 's stories are soaked profound inside traditional mythology. Wonder Woman was made as old Greek Amazon, shaped from a portion of
the mysterious earth, and presented with power from the divine beings. Her mom, who shaped her from the mud, was Hippolita, the ruler of the
Amazons in traditional Greek mythology. Rising up out of a starting point inundated by myth, the majority of Wonder Woman 's most notable and
critical stories have been profoundly embedded in related characters and ideas (Ndalianis, 116). Indeed, as indicated by modern comic book coherence,
Wonder Woman 's trip to the super courteous universe of costumed adventuring started when the Amazon 's held a challenge to pick a commendable
champion to voyage to "man

After completing the Myers Briggs personality test online, I discovered that my personality type is known as the 'Defender.' My personality type is
introverted, meaning I enjoy doing activities on my own, and too much social interaction can become exhausting for me. I am fairly observant as

The Defenders Essay
Hello and welcome to my review of Season 1 of the Defenders, the newest Netflix show from Marvel. The first section will be spoiler free and then I'll
get into spoilers at the end.
Overall, the show is very good and I think anyone who like the previous shows will like this, but if you didn't, The Defenders won't do much to
convert you, as its mainly intended for fans of the earlier Marvel shows on Netflix.
I'm not sure how many people this even applies to, but if you were wondering if The Defenders would still be enjoyable if you haven't seen
everything else, I'd say you can, but it's much more rewarding the more you've seen. Having watched Daredevil is especially important as the plotlines
and supporting characters from that show play a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The show starts out with a somewhat of a slow build, with not that much action in the first two episodes. I didn't have a problem with it and there's
plenty of action later, but just keep that in mind going in.
The Defenders is only 8 episodes long, compared to the 13 episodes that Daredevil and the others got per season. This lets the plot move along a
quick pace and there really isn't any noticeable filler.
Everyone felt true to the way they had previously been portrayed and I didn't notice any glaring out of character moments. It's really fun seeing people
from different shows interact with each other, which I'll get more into in the spoiler section.
The cast is very good with the main exception being Finn Jones as Danny Rand as I alluded to earlier. Sigourney Weaver is great as always in her
role as the villain Alexandra Reid, but the character itself didn't really work for me that much, and we never get to see her do anything to establish
herself as a great villain. It's hard to explain fully without spoilers, so I'll get into that later. From what I understand, Reid is not from the comics,
which seems like an odd choice to do for the first season of the team up of all Marvel's Netflix shows, given the ridiculous amount of villains Marvel
has its disposal.
The fight choreography is basically on the same level as Daredevil and huge step up from Iron Fist. A few moments are a

Literature Review : Public Defenders
Literature Review Public defenders are put at a major disadvantage in terms of the effectiveness of defense they can provide. Most defenders will try
to defend their clients to the best of their ability, but there are so many obstacles that prevent this from happening. These obstacles include heavy
caseloads, lack of resources, government restriction, and the type of client they have to defend. While not all of these problems have a simple solution
there must be some remedy to the issues. By not being able to provide a proper defense it directly violates proper due process.
Caseloads and Resources For starters, two major issues that hinder the effectiveness of public defenders are heavy caseloads and a lack of useable
resources. These excessive caseloads are much more detrimental than they sound. A lot of work is common for attorneys but a public defender must
take on much more than they should and this causes some cases to be neglected. According to Woods (2014), that one lawyer in a certain county in
Washington could spend approximately fourteen hours on a case while in a neighboring county the same lawyer could only spend 3 hours on a case.
These numbers vary from county to county depending on the amount of convictions that are processed. Public defenders also have the responsibility
of training young lawyers, visiting clients, and conducting daily life all with the pressure of these many cases as well (Newton, 2009). This issue
causes the public defender to have to

Essay about The Defender of the Faith
The Defender of the Faith
In Philip Roth's, "Defender of the Faith", Sergeant Nathan Marx is the "Defender" of whom the title speaks. Reluctant at first, Marx defended his faith
on two fronts, one across the sea in Europe and the second in the United States. The battle in the states was of a different type. Marx learned what it was
like to defend his and the faith of his fellow Jews against prejudice and abuse by those who waged the war. Marx is not an orthodox Jew. He does
not follow the doctrine as most of those in his religion would and did not realize until asked by Grossbart that he was still religious. Though Grossbart
showed him he was not like others, Grossbart was not the central antagonism, The war was.

Marx was concerned that Grossbart was right and that those who wanted to attend the service should have the chance to attend.
Marx confronted Captain Barrett on the matter, who only confirmed Grossbart's case by showing he was prejudice. Captain Barrett told Marx he'd
"fight side by side with a nigger if the fella proved to me he was a man."(p.119) Marx was not pleased with the captain's outlook, and even less
pleased when the captain told him he should "leave that stuff to the Chaplain."(p.119) Marx took it upon himself that the soldiers who wanted to attend
church should be allowed and ordered his C.Q. to announce "Jewish personnel who want to attend services this evening are to fall out in front of the
orderly room,"(p.120) and then added "By order of Captain Barrett." Marx had won that battle.
Marx, after a few exploits of Grossbart, such as getting a weekend pass to attend a religious dinner a month late and then not attending that dinner,
understood that he was being played the fool. Grossbart did not want special privileges for his fellow Jewish soldiers, yet only wanted a free ride in the
army. This came to Marx when Grossbart asked if Marx could "do something" about Grossbart's being shipped off to war in the pacific. Grossbart was

Essay Defender of the Faith Theme
Defender of the Faith Theme
Theme in "Defender of the Faith" can be interpreted in many varying ways, some of which are life–long lessons and others to the relation between
faith and the individual.
Throughout much of the story, Nathan Marx is lost between his role as a sergeant, Jew and human being. The relationship between the church, state and
individual is a well–known concept. The three must be independent of each other and this story explores what happens when the three are forced
together. His religion starts the whole process of the three intertwining. As his grandmother said, "Mercy overrides justice." The quote reflects Marx's
human side, where feelings dominate over duty. I think the theme warns about faith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, the author, Philip Roth, is teaching us the good, honourable way of life.
The theme with Jewishness has much to do with Nathan Marx, the "defender" mentioned in the title. He unknowingly fights the good war against
anti–Semitism in the European theatre of war and comes back to train more soldiers against the Axis powers. In the process he cares for his Jewish
trainees in terms of weekly rituals and diet and gives them leeway. Marx went out of his way to please Grossbart, in fact he even conflicted with his
Captain on numerous occasions about food and combat. Grossbart was simply manipulating and abusing the religion for his own gain. When Marx
realizes this, he once again fights back by sending him to the Pacific. The war and decisions made in boot camp were tough times for Marx, a lot like
the suffering of Jews throughout history. Either way, he perseveres and wins both his battles against the Nazis, the ignorance of his colleagues and the
manipulation of Grossbart. There is a theme much like the title, of staying true to the faith, educating and protecting it from those who oppose or don't
understand it. As long as you believe, things will turn out right. He may not be an Orthodox or traditional Jew but he is a true Jew, determined by
actions, more than just prayers and words.
The right way to live as an individual in society is an important theme set in this

Analysis Of Gwendolyn Brooks 's ' Lights And Shadows '
Gwendolyn brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas. Her family moved to Chicago during the great migration when Brooks was six weeks old. Her
first poem was published when she was 13 and at the age of 17, she already had a series of poems published in the poetry column "Lights and
shadows" in the Chicago defender newspaper. . After working for The NAACP, she began to write poems that focus on urban poor blacks. Those
poems were later published as a collection in 1945. The collection was titled A Street in Bronzeville. A street in bronzeville received critical
acclaim but it was her next work, Annie Allen, that was got her the Pulitzer Prize. She lived in Chicago until her death on December 3, 2000 at age
of 83. In 1960 Gwendolyn Brooks actually published two poems about the Emmett Till case. Those two was "The Last Quatrain of the Ballad of
Emmett Till," and "A Bronzeville Mother loiters in Mississippi, Meanwhile a missipi mother burns bacon." Her poem, A Bronzeville Mother
Loiters In Mississippi. Meanwhile, A Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon, is what I chose to focus on in my paper. Brooks's poem is all about Carolyn
Bryant and how she might have felt about the murder of Till. She presents Carolyn as almost sympathetic, oppressed housewife whose refuses to
accept her role and her husband role in the injustice murder of Till. Instead, she rationalizes it by comparing the murder to a fairy tale. She makes
herself the princess, her husband the prince, and Till the dark villain.

Essay On Improving Access To Legal Services
Improving Access to Legal Services in the United States The U.S. Congress established the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in 1974 to promote
equality in the justice system. Today, the access and affordability of legal services, especially for the poor, continues to be an issue. According to the
LSC's 2017 Justice Gap Report, "Eighty–six percent of the civil legal problems faced by low–income Americans in a given year receive inadequate or
no legal help" (Legal Services Corporation, 2017, p. 30). The Sixth Amendment of the U.S. constitution and relevant case law details the universal
application of both American citizens' and noncitizens' right to legal counsel. By examining possible policy alternatives through the lens of the

Some solutions include the improvement of funding and structure of public defender services to ensure each litigant receives proper attention, the
reformation of the justice system to avoid disproportionate effects on the poor, collaboration with other services to expand accessibility, and increased
promotion and incentives for attorneys to provide pro bono services. In the 1963 U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, the Sixth
Amendment's right to counsel became incorporated, and as a result, those who are indigent are entitled to a court–appointed attorney to represent them
in any courtroom. This landmark case led states to enhance their public defense systems because "public defenders assist in the fight against crime and
contribute to the effective operation of programs that may help reduce recidivism, thereby increasing the effectiveness of our justice system" (Fabelo,
2001, p. 2). Ensuring that states allocate necessary funding and resources to their respective public defender systems will reduce individual public
defenders' caseloads. Policymakers examining the needs of public defender systems should use personal testimony from people who utilized the
service, verdict and sentencing data, and public opinion polls as measures of

Public Defenders Essay
In the United States, the adversarial system of justice relies on ensuring a criminal defendant receives a fair trial. The sixth amendment gives
defendants the right to legal representation in criminal trials even if they cannot afford one themselves. Each city and county in the United States
ensures a defendant the right to counsel. There are different ways cities and counties across the United States provide representation for indigent
defendants. One such approach to indigent defense is public defender programs and is a popular system used by many states today. Public defender
programs have been around since the 1900's but gained popularity throughout the years due to the many indigent defense cases.

Subsequently, in 1972 Argersinger v. Hamlin held that defendants were required legal counsel when faced with incarceration from a misdemeanor or
felony conviction (Smith, 2004). Following these Supreme Court decisions, most state and local governments had to develop new systems of indigent
defense or modify the old ones to keep up with the number of clients (Wice, 2005). Since Gideon v. Wainwright, other cases have challenged the
Supreme Court application of the right to counsel. Currently, all defendants are given the right to counsel at all stages of the criminal justice process,
including during trial, appeals, and even during police interrogation.
There are three different methods that states use to provide indigent defense; public defenders, assigned counsel, and contract attorneys. Depending on
the size of a city or county usually determines what type of indigent defense is employed. Public defender programs can be public or private
nonprofit organizations (Neubauer & Fradella, 2011). Public defender programs are found mostly in populous jurisdictions and are most effective in
defending large numbers of indigent clients (Wice, 2005). Sometimes counties or states will use more than one type of defense for indigents. Today,
public defender programs represent close to seventy percent of all indigent defense nationwide (Neubauer & Fradella,

Differences Between Defence And Offense
In every game that people play whether it's chess, basketball or football, the players or teams need offense and defense. Not every person's mind
thinks in an offensive style and not every person thinks defensively. The way you play games is entirely up to you. Many people don't even realize the
major differences that tend to come out in these styles but the subtle similarities. The basic structure of many games starts with defense and offense,
then comes all the rules. The major difference in defence and offense is the pace of the player. Offense is typically a more aggressive strategy. Fast
paced moves with the hopes of making their opponent panic and make silly mistakes. Many defensive players take their time and instead of forcing
mistakes they try to let the other player make them on their own. Once they make too many mistakes they add up and the game is usually lost. Also on
defense you have the option to counter the attacker because they have to make the first move. In some sports these most common ... Show more content

They both require the same amount of thinking but the paths of thought process is completely different. Defense has the goal to shut down, whereas
offense would like to demoralize their opponent by simply outscoring them making them believe they won't be able to keep up. An example would be
chess you must protect your king at all costs but you could just try to take the other players key pieces making it tough for them to comeback. Or
you can defend until the attack with a key piece like the queen the take it out. Once you defend enough you will have to attempt a move on the
king. Just like when you keep attacking at some point it may be wise to take repercussions to defend. In sports like football after you have a
turnover and the ball is on offense you need to be capable of capitalizing and at least get a field goal. Offense and defense go hand in hand even
though they are polar

Symbolism In The Defenders
How would humans react to a forced world unification insisted upon by their proxy mercenaries, who have been deceitful to them for years? How
plausible would a world unification be? In The Defenders, by Phillip K. Dick, implications arise in a world where humans are governed by their own
creation of robots. The human race in The Defenders are living in a tedious and tiresome subsurface world, looking forward to the day that they win
the war and are able to resurface to the ruined lands, a byproduct of their "culture–pattern". The main characters of The Defenders overcome many
obstacles throughout the story when they are presented with false sources of information, a subjective truth, and an ultimate forced decision of the fate
of mankind from their man–made creation, the leadys.
It is important to evaluate the information that we are given, because we will continually assume that what we believe is true even though we
never question the basis for our beliefs. Maybe we believe things are true because we want to believe, that we've always believed, or that it is in our
vested interest to believe. We live in a world where the information we are given comes from a secondary source, and it is up to us to take that
information and critically think and question it, before we decide that we want to believe it. However, it is difficult to pursue truth when other sources
of information is limited or nonexistent. Is this a projection of Dick's view on reality of the times in which he

Public Defender Case Summary

  • 1. Public Defender Case Summary We have read in the news recently that there are plenty of public defenders who are facing budget cuts and are in a financial crisis. This can be seen by a chief public defender in New Orleans who has had to resort to turning clients away. The public defender's office in New Orleans is understaffed, currently employing 42 overworked lawyers, in relation to the 72 attorneys and 20 investigators it employed in 2008. These go against the standard set by the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice and the ABA Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Counsel in Death Penalty Cases. The National Standards point to the caseload maximus prescribed by the National Advisory Commission (NAC) on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals, a 1973 U.S. Department... Supreme Court case law, and improvements in forensic sciences and criminal justice technologies – all of which increases the time needed to render effective representation beyond what was established in 1973. For exactly this reason, several experts argue that the NAC standards are far too high, and that the actual maximum, for felony cases in particular, should be adjusted to well below 150 cases per attorney per ... • 2. Public Defender Research Paper Underfunding and overburdening prevents Public Defenders Offices from performing their jobs properly. For example, a 2007 report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics stated that 40% of all Public Defender Offices had no investigators on their payroll, resulting in lawyers lacking means to perform research on a specific case, find out the truth of the situation and thus present a strong defense (Farole 1). The position of these defenders is so dire, in fact, that, an investigation by The Florida Times Union newspaper revealed that Public Defenders in Augusta, Georgia, were forced to work in leaking mobile offices infested with cockroaches and mold. One Public Defender described the constant perverseness of the conditions: "Cockroaches crawl up... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bail, or, "money or property given as a guarantee that an individual will return to court as directed, after being released from jail," provides yet another mechanism for the Justice System to lock up the poor (Legal Dictionary). For most middle–class Americans, bail causes no concern–the defendant pays a fine and awaits his trial date as a free man. While appearing perfectly reasonable, the intention of bail, however, has become fraudulent, immoral, and arguably criminal, incommensurably abusing the impoverished. A report by the Council of Economic Advisers along with the White House articulated that "concerns are growing about the expanding use of monetary penalties, which disproportionately impact poor defendants and offenders" and examined possible solutions (Council of Economic Advisors). With apoverty rate of 13.5%, positioning 43.1 million people below the poverty line, many live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford to pay bail resulting in prison time before sentencing, even for non–violent crimes (Proctor). In fact, "38.5% of the total prison population were held in custody solely due to their inability to meet the terms of bail" (VanNostrand). In other words, people can be held for extended periods of time simply due to their lack of ability to pay. This results in people pleading guilty, even while maintaining their innocence, to get out of jail time. For impoverished people, bail "robs them of the presumption of innocence and their right to a fair trial" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparison: The Avengers And The Black Widow The Avengers, excellent movie of all times for sure, no opposition. Great story line, great screenplay, and best of all, great characters. The characters' personalities are amazing together, and even more amazing when studied individually. What makes them so amazing are their very contrasting characteristics. My primary focus, The Incredible Hulk, and The Black Widow, two opposing forces, so similar yet so different. A great powerful beast and a beautiful young woman, but do not let body sizes fool you. First and foremost, The Black Widow possesses no superpowers unlike the Hulk, who transforms into a gigantic green beast when enraged. She does not have to rely on any super powers in combat, but only relies on her strength, stealth, and knowledge of weaponry. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His anger is so easily triggered even by the smallest of things. In the movie, we find that he has to be cooled down, even by the use of lullabies which is pretty bizarre to use on the whole has grown up. Without being calmed down, he is accomplished by destroying everything in his way. The Black Widow seemingly was the only one that was able to take it easy this beast meritoriously. She sang to him to calm him down. To effectively calm anyone down, one needs to be gentle and gracious themselves. The Black Widow was both soft and kind enough to be able to handle Hulk, even after he had transformed into a beast, which was very courageous of her as The Hulk could easily tear her to pieces without thinking twice. It is no wonder that she and Hulk fell in love with each other. Opposite poles attract anyways. In the movie, we see that she is usually calm and collected even when enraged. She does not act on anger but instead remains quiet and strategies her moves to revenge. Even when Hulk refuses to keep cool at times, she remains patient and keeps trying to calm him down till she succeeds without getting angry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Personal Statement : Defender Direct Will Ethan Thomas COB401 / Prof. Stiver Assignment #2 6/14/2015 Introduction By the first of next month, DEFENDER Direct will officially be known as Defenders. This has been an endeavor lasting months. Each aspect of the company has been contributing to make sure there is a successful transition into this rebranding strategy. Through analysis and research it is easy to observe how the entire company has properly prepared and affected this transition. With many moving pieces, Defenders has still stayed true to their goals, values, and mission statement. They are still the top marketer, seller, and installer of ADT Home Security Systems. Properly titled an Authorized Premier Provider for ADT, Defenders continually strives to constantly grow and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... New employees are encourage to become growth orientated learners, competitive winners, and humble servants. By understanding and following these values one can truly grow. We are called to grow and inspire leaders who love and serve people (Defenders, 2015). Leader is emphasized with the mantra "Everyone is a leader" (Defenders, 2015). A mission statement is created and used to portray larger environment goals and should indirectly guide individuals within an organization to greater outcomes personally and professionally (Kotler & Armstrong, 2014, p. 63). In this mission statement, the focus never hits directly on what the company does or accomplishes from a business aspect. By investing so heavily in the employees themselves, Defenders simplify the business and encourage growth in the individual to reach bigger goals. Defenders have always stressed company culture and its overall mission. The re–branding has not truly affect what is being implemented, but created more importance on the individual employees. Each employee is a defender, and the company is properly renaming itself in support of each defender that works for the company. This internal re–branding was the first piece of the much larger puzzle of interesting the brand to each piece of the company and to the business world. By renaming themselves to reflect their ... • 5. Public Defender Thesis For this upcoming research project, the working title would be "Public Support for Public Defenders: How Income Affects Perception". Specifically, I want to look at how public approval of public defender's impacts differs based on income and how that affects whether they think reforms are necessary. Therefore, my research question would be: does income affect the public's perception of the effectiveness and approval of public defenders? So far two studies have been done that will aid in my research question. The first was a study is entitled "Americans' Views on Public Defenders and The Right to Counsel", a National Public Opinion Survey conducted for The Right to Counsel National Campaign in March 2017 and provides data on the perceptions of need and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This study looks at those who use the services of public defenders and whether they think they are effective or approval of them. This is a significant issue for both public policy and California because the public's approval and belief in the effectiveness of a certain services affects how resources are allocated and whether reforms are implemented. As a current intern at the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office it is clear that resources are limited compared to those available for say the DA's office, so if the public believes that it is effective regardless of these limitations then they are less willing to increase resources. On the other side, those from a lower income that are clients of the public defender's office can see first–hand the limitations of these services and may believe reforms are necessary to increase its effectiveness. • 6. Football Narrative Speech The sun beat down on us. Sweat trickled down our necks.Grass marks stained our jerseys and stuck to us like a wet shirt. I brushed my dark brown hair out of the way and looked at the game clock, 47 seconds remained and we needed to win. The yellow crossbars glistened in the sun and our goal, the end zone right below. One play was all that we needed. One pass into the end zone. The score was 27–21. My team was aching, tired, and wore down. We were still gonna win and nothing would stop us. I called the play, " Omaha! Omaha!" The receivers scattered to different sides of the field. My offensive linemen huddled in front of me and got into position. Two receivers on both sides and my running back behind me. What should I do? Should I pass the ball or run the ball in myself? I knew what to do and was going to accomplish it. My teammates all huddled around and told me, " Pass the ball through the defenders when I run a slant, time it perfectly." Someone else told me, "throw towards the end zone, hail mary, I'll catch it for sure. " So many ideas coming at me at once and had one chance. The referee blew the whistle, as we stood in our formations. I turned towards the crowd, everyone was cheering, I couldn't let them down. I stood in shotgun mode, farther back from the players and shouted " HIKE" The ball was snapped to me and I scanned the field for open receivers. The defensive linebackers were trying to get me, but I was well protected. They eyed me with their brown eyes and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. An Article About Public Defenders Alexa Van Brunt, an attorney with the Roderick and Solange MacArthur Justice Center at Northwestern Law School, wrote an article about public defenders. In it she describes why those who cannot afford good lawyers are being misrepresented by public defenders. The main idea she wants to drive home is that public defenders are underfunded and extremely overworked by excessive caseloads. Hence, they are providing a weaker defense for their clients. The US Department of Justice indicates that in 2007 and about "73% of county public defender offices exceed the maximum limit of cases" (Brunt, 2015, para. 2). Public defenders are so overwhelmed by cases that in some instances they can spend less than an hour per case (Brunt, 2015, para. 3).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The justice system is designed in a way that the prosecutor and defense both present their case to best of their capabilities. If people believe that they had the opportunity to present their side of the story, then they tend to feel more positive about the justice system as a whole. However, if one side is lacking resources to afford good representation, then the court appoints an attorney, usually a public defender. This defender ends up misrepresenting the defendant because of the lack of resources to investigate each case properly and time to spear per case. Looking at the first choice which talks about the rights of the individual versus the common good we conclude that United States operate under the Crime Control Model which advocates for swift prosecution of defendant in attempts to stop criminal activities from reoccurring. However, if one is clearly misrepresented, then justice cannot be served. In many cases individuals and their families lose faith in the justice system because they see how insufficient it is. Such disbelief might correlate with increased recidivism rates and national crime rates in general. The third point talks about the choice whether to discover the truth or to resolve conflict. Here we touch upon justice and representation as a whole, however, there cannot be justice for all if certain groups of individuals are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leading into one of my favorite aspects of the series. Character Dynamics: Speaking broadly for the whole series, if I were to give an example of how the characters in Defenders play of off each other I would use DC's Suicide Squad as a good comparisons for the characters. To explain this, in the Suicide Squad movie, there is a scene where all the bad guys sat in a bar and had a drink exchanging bar room talk and typical banter. For me, I can totally see the Defenders doing something very similar, which they did in episode 4, and it WORKS. This is to be taken as a compliment as even though the characters have just met each other under extreme circumstances, episode 4 is a pretty much good example of how the main characters will act towards each other for the entire show. Only Danny and Matt understand or even know about the hand, Jessica and Luke are in a constant stream of disbelief as soon as magic is involved. The sarcastic quips that have towards each other gives off a very realistic view to it. I can totally see actually people having conversations and reacting similar to the main characters in the show. Unlike when you compare them to the Avengers that for me personally, lack those kind of interaction with their characters or at least don't make use of them enough in my opinion(except for ... • 12. Successful Soccer Defender How to be a Successful Soccer Defender Defense is the back bone of the team! Defenders must be ready to make a sliding tackle, alert and ready to back up their teammates in case they make a mistake. Defenders themselves do not have the luxury of making mistakes, since even a small slip on their part might result in a goal for their opponents, and a loss that their teammates are likely not to forgive. Being a successful defender calls for a consistent, reliable and sound performance. I've been studying the worlds greatest soccer defenders since I became a defender about 2 years ago. The best defenders are patient when the offensive player is approaching, they find the right moment to step in or go for the slide tackle causing the offensive player to lose the ball. They need to anticipate the play, and be one step ahead of the offensive player. Defenders have a hard, often unappreciated job. They need mental toughness, and determination to succeed. The best way to defend your goal is by being aggressive. Good defenders are aggressive. They aren't afraid to make strong tackles and use their body. They attack balls with their heads and get in front of shots. Play so aggressive that players are scared to receive the ball. You want the opposition to fear you. Though many can have different interpretations of this poem, it is fair to look at the life and career or the works and influences of Gwendolyn Brooks. The life and art of the black American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, began on June 7, 1917 when she was born in Topeka, Kansas. She was the first child of Keziah Corine Wims and David Anderson Brooks. After a lifetime of skilled verse writing, Brooks died of cancer in December 2000 when she was 83 years old. The works of Gwendolyn Brooks has gone through several changes throughout her career. When she first published in 1945, she was eager to be understood by strangers. In her last two poetical collections, however, she has dumped that attitude and gone ?black?. Her change then led her from a major publishing house to smaller black ones. While some critics found an angrier tone in her work, elements of protest had always been present in her writing. Her poetry moves from traditional forms including sonnets, ballads, variations of the Chaucerian and Spenserian stanzas, and the rhythm of the blues to the most unrestricted free verse. To sum up, the popular forms of English poetry appear in her work, but there is some testing as she puts together lyric, narrative, and dramatic poetic forms. In her narrative poetry, the stories are simple but usually go beyond the restrictions of place. In her dramatic poetry, the characters are often memorable because they are everyday survivors not heroes. Her characters are drawn from the underclass of the nation's black slums. Like many urban writers, Brooks has recorded the impact of city life. However, aside from most committed naturalists, she does not entirely blame the city for what happens to people. The city is simply an existing force with which people must deal with. The most dominant theme in Brooks?s work is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This game has been of great interest to mathematicians around the world since its introduction, including Martin Gardner who explores it in chapter eight of his first Scientific American Book of Mathematical Puzzles and Games (1959). The game is normally played on a board of 11x11 hexagons with two edges labelled black and the other two labelled white. It is a two–person game in which both players (using black and white counters) attempt to create a chain connecting both of their respective sides of the board. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This knowledge will hopefully allow the player to place ladder escapes (discussed later in the chapter), which will more often than not result in winning positions for the attacking player. The most common ladder formation, the bottleneck, is one that all players should familiarize themselves with. This occurs when there is a gap in between two defensive counters, and the attacking player must place a counter in that gap, which ultimately forces a ladder like the one depicted in figure one on the left. At this point, it would be wise to place an escape in the third row, to the left of where the ladder is about to form. The reasoning behind this is that the defending player now has to deal with a ladder escape and a possible connection to counters at the top of the board in C2, D3, and E4. All things considered, an ideal placement for the ladder escape would be C9. Figure two shows the placement of the red counter on C9 and the computer's response in A10. Can you now determine a placement that would secure a win for the red player?Ladder escapes, as hinted to in the previous two paragraphs, are of vital importance with regards to ladders and the successful formation of a connection to the edge. Without the use of them, ladders would continue to extend until reaching an edge and ultimately a victory for the player on the defensive side of the ladder. • 21. News Analysis : A Mockery Of Justice For The Poor Essay Rachel Mulder Professor Henry CCJS 201 1 December 2016 News Analysis Report #2 In the New York Times article, "A Mockery of Justice for the Poor," the author discusses how the poor are cheated in the criminal justice system. By law, it is mandatory that the government provides an attorney to any defendant facing possible prison time, even if he or she cannot afford one. However, there are underlying fees that must be paid despite these people being poor. John Pfaff mentions how 43 states are now requiring indigent defendants to pay at least a portion of their lawyers' fees, even though they had to be appointed one in the first place. Those who do qualify as indignant may be able to be acquitted, however, they could be convicted for failing to pay for the legal services the Constitution requires the states to provide for the defendants. Not to mention, spending money on attorneys for the poor amounts to only $2.3 billion – barely even 1% of the $200 billion the government spends annually on the criminal justice system (Pfaff 2016). Not surprisingly, public defenders who are appointed to these cases are often stripped of resources while tackling multiple other assignments at the same time. Mr. Pfaff takes his aim at the federal government, proclaiming that they should help fund indigent defense services by making an annual grant of $4 billion to state and local governments. In total, this would only be 0.3% of the federal government's approximate $1.2 trillion budget (Pfaff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. The Defenders Essay Hello and welcome to my review of Season 1 of the Defenders, the newest Netflix show from Marvel. The first section will be spoiler free and then I'll get into spoilers at the end. Overall, the show is very good and I think anyone who like the previous shows will like this, but if you didn't, The Defenders won't do much to convert you, as its mainly intended for fans of the earlier Marvel shows on Netflix. I'm not sure how many people this even applies to, but if you were wondering if The Defenders would still be enjoyable if you haven't seen everything else, I'd say you can, but it's much more rewarding the more you've seen. Having watched Daredevil is especially important as the plotlines and supporting characters from that show play a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The show starts out with a somewhat of a slow build, with not that much action in the first two episodes. I didn't have a problem with it and there's plenty of action later, but just keep that in mind going in. The Defenders is only 8 episodes long, compared to the 13 episodes that Daredevil and the others got per season. This lets the plot move along a quick pace and there really isn't any noticeable filler. Everyone felt true to the way they had previously been portrayed and I didn't notice any glaring out of character moments. It's really fun seeing people from different shows interact with each other, which I'll get more into in the spoiler section. The cast is very good with the main exception being Finn Jones as Danny Rand as I alluded to earlier. Sigourney Weaver is great as always in her role as the villain Alexandra Reid, but the character itself didn't really work for me that much, and we never get to see her do anything to establish herself as a great villain. It's hard to explain fully without spoilers, so I'll get into that later. From what I understand, Reid is not from the comics, which seems like an odd choice to do for the first season of the team up of all Marvel's Netflix shows, given the ridiculous amount of villains Marvel has its disposal. The fight choreography is basically on the same level as Daredevil and huge step up from Iron Fist. A few moments are a

  • 30. Literature Review : Public Defenders Literature Review Public defenders are put at a major disadvantage in terms of the effectiveness of defense they can provide. Most defenders will try to defend their clients to the best of their ability, but there are so many obstacles that prevent this from happening. These obstacles include heavy caseloads, lack of resources, government restriction, and the type of client they have to defend. While not all of these problems have a simple solution there must be some remedy to the issues. By not being able to provide a proper defense it directly violates proper due process. Caseloads and Resources For starters, two major issues that hinder the effectiveness of public defenders are heavy caseloads and a lack of useable resources. These excessive caseloads are much more detrimental than they sound. A lot of work is common for attorneys but a public defender must take on much more than they should and this causes some cases to be neglected. According to Woods (2014), that one lawyer in a certain county in Washington could spend approximately fourteen hours on a case while in a neighboring county the same lawyer could only spend 3 hours on a case. These numbers vary from county to county depending on the amount of convictions that are processed. Public defenders also have the responsibility of training young lawyers, visiting clients, and conducting daily life all with the pressure of these many cases as well (Newton, 2009). This issue causes the public defender to have to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Essay about The Defender of the Faith The Defender of the Faith In Philip Roth's, "Defender of the Faith", Sergeant Nathan Marx is the "Defender" of whom the title speaks. Reluctant at first, Marx defended his faith on two fronts, one across the sea in Europe and the second in the United States. The battle in the states was of a different type. Marx learned what it was like to defend his and the faith of his fellow Jews against prejudice and abuse by those who waged the war. Marx is not an orthodox Jew. He does not follow the doctrine as most of those in his religion would and did not realize until asked by Grossbart that he was still religious. Though Grossbart showed him he was not like others, Grossbart was not the central antagonism, The war was. It was not that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Marx was concerned that Grossbart was right and that those who wanted to attend the service should have the chance to attend. Marx confronted Captain Barrett on the matter, who only confirmed Grossbart's case by showing he was prejudice. Captain Barrett told Marx he'd "fight side by side with a nigger if the fella proved to me he was a man."(p.119) Marx was not pleased with the captain's outlook, and even less pleased when the captain told him he should "leave that stuff to the Chaplain."(p.119) Marx took it upon himself that the soldiers who wanted to attend church should be allowed and ordered his C.Q. to announce "Jewish personnel who want to attend services this evening are to fall out in front of the orderly room,"(p.120) and then added "By order of Captain Barrett." Marx had won that battle. Marx, after a few exploits of Grossbart, such as getting a weekend pass to attend a religious dinner a month late and then not attending that dinner, understood that he was being played the fool. Grossbart did not want special privileges for his fellow Jewish soldiers, yet only wanted a free ride in the army. This came to Marx when Grossbart asked if Marx could "do something" about Grossbart's being shipped off to war in the pacific. Grossbart was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Essay Defender of the Faith Theme Defender of the Faith Theme Theme in "Defender of the Faith" can be interpreted in many varying ways, some of which are life–long lessons and others to the relation between faith and the individual. Throughout much of the story, Nathan Marx is lost between his role as a sergeant, Jew and human being. The relationship between the church, state and individual is a well–known concept. The three must be independent of each other and this story explores what happens when the three are forced together. His religion starts the whole process of the three intertwining. As his grandmother said, "Mercy overrides justice." The quote reflects Marx's human side, where feelings dominate over duty. I think the theme warns about faith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially, the author, Philip Roth, is teaching us the good, honourable way of life. The theme with Jewishness has much to do with Nathan Marx, the "defender" mentioned in the title. He unknowingly fights the good war against anti–Semitism in the European theatre of war and comes back to train more soldiers against the Axis powers. In the process he cares for his Jewish trainees in terms of weekly rituals and diet and gives them leeway. Marx went out of his way to please Grossbart, in fact he even conflicted with his Captain on numerous occasions about food and combat. Grossbart was simply manipulating and abusing the religion for his own gain. When Marx realizes this, he once again fights back by sending him to the Pacific. The war and decisions made in boot camp were tough times for Marx, a lot like the suffering of Jews throughout history. Either way, he perseveres and wins both his battles against the Nazis, the ignorance of his colleagues and the manipulation of Grossbart. There is a theme much like the title, of staying true to the faith, educating and protecting it from those who oppose or don't understand it. As long as you believe, things will turn out right. He may not be an Orthodox or traditional Jew but he is a true Jew, determined by actions, more than just prayers and words. • 33. Analysis Of Gwendolyn Brooks 's ' Lights And Shadows ' Gwendolyn brooks was born in Topeka, Kansas. Her family moved to Chicago during the great migration when Brooks was six weeks old. Her first poem was published when she was 13 and at the age of 17, she already had a series of poems published in the poetry column "Lights and shadows" in the Chicago defender newspaper. . After working for The NAACP, she began to write poems that focus on urban poor blacks. Those poems were later published as a collection in 1945. The collection was titled A Street in Bronzeville. A street in bronzeville received critical acclaim but it was her next work, Annie Allen, that was got her the Pulitzer Prize. She lived in Chicago until her death on December 3, 2000 at age of 83. In 1960 Gwendolyn Brooks actually published two poems about the Emmett Till case. Those two was "The Last Quatrain of the Ballad of Emmett Till," and "A Bronzeville Mother loiters in Mississippi, Meanwhile a missipi mother burns bacon." Her poem, A Bronzeville Mother Loiters In Mississippi. Meanwhile, A Mississippi Mother Burns Bacon, is what I chose to focus on in my paper. Brooks's poem is all about Carolyn Bryant and how she might have felt about the murder of Till. She presents Carolyn as almost sympathetic, oppressed housewife whose refuses to accept her role and her husband role in the injustice murder of Till. Instead, she rationalizes it by comparing the murder to a fairy tale. She makes herself the princess, her husband the prince, and Till the dark villain. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Today, the access and affordability of legal services, especially for the poor, continues to be an issue. According to the LSC's 2017 Justice Gap Report, "Eighty–six percent of the civil legal problems faced by low–income Americans in a given year receive inadequate or no legal help" (Legal Services Corporation, 2017, p. 30). Some solutions include the improvement of funding and structure of public defender services to ensure each litigant receives proper attention, the reformation of the justice system to avoid disproportionate effects on the poor, collaboration with other services to expand accessibility, and increased promotion and incentives for attorneys to provide pro bono services. In the 1963 U.S. Supreme Court case Gideon v. Wainwright, the Sixth Amendment's right to counsel became incorporated, and as a result, those who are indigent are entitled to a court–appointed attorney to represent them in any courtroom. This landmark case led states to enhance their public defense systems because "public defenders assist in the fight against crime and contribute to the effective operation of programs that may help reduce recidivism, thereby increasing the effectiveness of our justice system" (Fabelo, 2001, p. 2). Ensuring that states allocate necessary funding and resources to their respective public defender systems will reduce individual public defenders' caseloads. Policymakers examining the needs of public defender systems should use personal testimony from people who utilized the service, verdict and sentencing data, and public opinion polls as measures of ... The sixth amendment gives defendants the right to legal representation in criminal trials even if they cannot afford one themselves. Each city and county in the United States ensures a defendant the right to counsel. There are different ways cities and counties across the United States provide representation for indigent defendants. One such approach to indigent defense is public defender programs and is a popular system used by many states today. Public defender programs have been around since the 1900's but gained popularity throughout the years due to the many indigent defense cases. Historically, the right to ... Hamlin held that defendants were required legal counsel when faced with incarceration from a misdemeanor or felony conviction (Smith, 2004). Following these Supreme Court decisions, most state and local governments had to develop new systems of indigent defense or modify the old ones to keep up with the number of clients (Wice, 2005). Since Gideon v. Wainwright, other cases have challenged the Supreme Court application of the right to counsel. Currently, all defendants are given the right to counsel at all stages of the criminal justice process, including during trial, appeals, and even during police interrogation. There are three different methods that states use to provide indigent defense; public defenders, assigned counsel, and contract attorneys. Depending on the size of a city or county usually determines what type of indigent defense is employed. Public defender programs can be public or private nonprofit organizations (Neubauer & Fradella, 2011). Public defender programs are found mostly in populous jurisdictions and are most effective in defending large numbers of indigent clients (Wice, 2005). When designing the monument, it is believed that Herman A, MacNeil had the intention of showing how strong those in the confederacy were, and that they would protect the confederacy as a whole during any issues that could arise. When looking at the statue, the first thing noticed is the semi– unclothed man with a shield and sword at the very front, and I feel that the designer placed him in that position to show that the confederacy at the time of the Civil War was extremely powerful. Not every person's mind thinks in an offensive style and not every person thinks defensively. The way you play games is entirely up to you. Many people don't even realize the major differences that tend to come out in these styles but the subtle similarities. The basic structure of many games starts with defense and offense, then comes all the rules. The major difference in defence and offense is the pace of the player. Offense is typically a more aggressive strategy. Fast paced moves with the hopes of making their opponent panic and make silly mistakes. Many defensive players take their time and instead of forcing mistakes they try to let the other player make them on their own. Once they make too many mistakes they add up and the game is usually lost. Also on defense you have the option to counter the attacker because they have to make the first move. Or you can defend until the attack with a key piece like the queen the take it out. Once you defend enough you will have to attempt a move on the king. Just like when you keep attacking at some point it may be wise to take repercussions to defend. • 40. Symbolism In The Defenders How would humans react to a forced world unification insisted upon by their proxy mercenaries, who have been deceitful to them for years? How plausible would a world unification be? In The Defenders, by Phillip K. Dick, implications arise in a world where humans are governed by their own creation of robots. The human race in The Defenders are living in a tedious and tiresome subsurface world, looking forward to the day that they win the war and are able to resurface to the ruined lands, a byproduct of their "culture–pattern". The main characters of The Defenders overcome many obstacles throughout the story when they are presented with false sources of information, a subjective truth, and an ultimate forced decision of the fate of mankind from their man–made creation, the leadys. It is important to evaluate the information that we are given, because we will continually assume that what we believe is true even though we never question the basis for our beliefs. Maybe we believe things are true because we want to believe, that we've always believed, or that it is in our vested interest to believe. We live in a world where the information we are given comes from a secondary source, and it is up to us to take that information and critically think and question it, before we decide that we want to believe it.
