I came across Matthew Rajaratnam s resume in early 2017 while my team and I
were looking for additional help on a time sensitive project involving the manual
segmentation of CT scans to create a repository of data for machine learning
purposes. Matthew stood out among the applicants and was hired. He quickly
became adept at using the software and contributed significantly to completion of the
project. I have since renewed his initial contract for an additional timequarter here at
Intuitive Surgical in recognition of the exceptionally high quality of his work and
intend to continue extending his engagement as long as he remains available. It is
now a pleasure to express my strong support for Matthew Rajaratnam s application

Capital in banks play an essential role of helping banks remain solvent by absorbing
losses caused due to stress conditions. In this paper, we shall analyse how capital
helps banks manage their risk, what led to banks failing during the financial crisis and
what measures have been adopted to avoid (or better manage) such situations in
future.
DEFINING BANK CAPITAL
Banks capital is defined to be the difference between the assets and liabilities of a
bank.
It is the net worth of the bank or its value to investors. It is stated along the liabilities
side of the balance sheet.
Main characteristics of bank capital
No contractual repayment requirements: Unlike other liabilities, bank capital is
perpetual. As long as bank continues to be in business, it is not obliged to repay the
shareholders.
Low priority in case of bankruptcy: In case of insolvency or bankruptcy, capital
investors only receive what remains after paying all the creditors. Capital generally
ranks low in case of claims as compared to most of the other claimants.
Constituents of bank capital
Tier 1 Capital also known as core capital includes permanent shareholders equity and
disclosed reserves.
Tier 2 Capital (supplementary capital) includes undisclosed reserves, revaluation
reserves, general provisions, hybrid capital instruments and subordinate term debt
subject to certain conditions.
The Blade Of The Craft Guild
The Blade of the Craft Guild realized his mission would be much more difficult than
he expected when less than twenty steps into the Wretched Quarter a man in a torn
and dirty black robe confronted him. The Blade was covered in filth, had on a dirty
and torn yellow tunic, and should have looked like any other wretched Craft Guild
citizen returning from across the river. Yet the man made a beeline to him.
Name your guild, the man asked.
I am a Custodian. I clean the floors in the Warehouse District. The Blade couldn t
quite believe he was seeing a man in black. Maybe there was some roving gang that
liked to pretend they were the heir of Pietro or something. He dropped his hand to the
stiletto sheathed against his leg.
Where do you live?
The Blade nodded in some vague direction. Over that aways.
Which street?
The man in black was not backing down. The Blade couldn t quite figure out what
was going on, but he didn t want to raise any alarms either. Who wants to know?
The Blade hoped that moving to an aggressive approach might do the trick. The gang
member was probably used to people cowering in front of him.
To the Blade s shock, the man in black didn t even ask another question. He reached
out and grabbed the Blade by the arm. You re coming with me. The man s grip was
like iron, and the Blade was yanked nearly off his feet.
Looking around, he was surrounded by quite a few people, but not enough to stop
his escape, which was good as he had very few options. He
The Reformers During Andrew Jackson
The Reformers During Andrew Jackson s term as president, many people seemed to
be more involved in wanting to change people s lives and equalize politics. Jackson
believed that a common man should have the right to have a voice in democracy.
(Grubb) Therefore, once Jackson was elected president people began focusing on the
crisis in the American society. Several reformers stated their perspectives on different
things that America can improve on whether it was about abolition, mental health
care, education, religious reform, or women s rights.
Slavery has been a continuous altercation in abolishing it or keeping it. William
Lloyed Garrison preached about abolition of slavery stating that slavery does not
define Christians. Slaves have the right to have the same exact rights and freedom
as a normal white American. As slavery was still going on, William questions what
Christianity has done for our slave population. In a religious point of view, slavery
is a national sin that must be removed. William compares how slavery would be for
a white person versus an African American and states, The argument that these
white slaves are degraded would not then obtain. You would say: It is enough that
they are white and in bondage, and they ought immediately to be set free. (William
Garrison) William sets a growing sense of social responsibilities by trying to get
America to look at slavery in the eyes of a Christian. The American society today has
drastically changed into everyone
Marlene Dietrich And Gender Stereotypes

it s my stock in trade. Dubbed the title, the best dressed man in Hollywood, Dietrich
challenged social norms and traditional moralities, frequently dressing in men s suits,
tuxedos, and top hats. Coming from abroad to the City of Angels, Hollywood
embraced Dietrich as an exotic and provocative, but charming European celebrity.
Throughout her years of fame, she utterly captivated the world with her legendary
films, becoming the highest paid actress of her time. Known for her beauty and
allure, Marlene Dietrich became not only a cultural symbol, but a global icon,

herself both feminine and masculine, and had numerous affairs with both genders.
Dietrich often cross dressed and bent gender rules, stating, I dress for the image. Not
for myself, not for the public, nor for the fashion, not for the men. As a young girl,
Marlene became proficient in music, playing the violin and piano throughout her
childhood. After an accident to her hand that left her unable to play, she discovered
the brilliance of the stage, and deemed it to be her calling. She performed in many

Analysis Of Ketchum s The Fall And Winter Of 1776
Ketchum begins in the fall and winter of 1776 in describing the events of the
campaign. At the time, the future of the Revolution was in serious doubt men were
freezing, starving, and the Continental Army was dissolving around General
Washington. More than anything else, he needed a victory. Ketchum displays to
the reader how exactly the colonials got into such a distressing situation in the first
place. Traveling back to 1774 and 1775 Ketchum explores the reason behind why
and how the entire situation occurred in the first place. The motivations of both the
English crown and the colonials are explored throughout the book. For example,
the motivations of King George III are explored in the section Everyone Who
Does Not Agree With Me Is A Traitor . Ketchum describes the early life of George
III which would motivate his latest moves against the colonies. George III felt he
had to almost be more English than the English themselves , to paraphrase the honor
of England and the crown were his preeminent concerns. Ketchum also described the
wide variety of ailments, mostly hereditary ones, which plagued the king. Put these
together and it s no surprise he was less than willing to listen to the pleas of his
colonial subjects. Ketchum also went into a good deal of detail as to the workings
and motivations of the British government at the time. Finally, he lists the events
leading up to the actual winter of 1776, the conditions on the ground and then goes
over the actual
Lab Report On The Properties Of Acetic Acid
1.ACETIC ACID:
1.1 Overview
Acetic acid is an organic compound, chemically represented as CH3COOH. It is
derived from the Latin word acetum, which means vinegar. It is a weak acid which is
among the most commonly used reagent in the laboratory for number of purposes.
After formic acid, acetic acid is the simplest carboxylic which consists of two
functional groups:
Carboxyl group group ( COOH)
Methyl group ( CH3)
When acetic acid is not diluted or in its concentrated form it is also termed as glacial
acetic acid. Vinegar used in common household practice is 3 9% acetic acid by
volume in water. Being acid this compound exhibits sour taste and pungent smell.
Synonyms used for acetic acid Ethanoic acid, glacial acetic acid, vinegar acid,
alcohol of vinegar, methane carboxylic acid, and pyro ligneous acid.
1.2Properties
1.2.1Appearance
Acetic acid is a clear, colorless liquid at room temperature. It can also be obtained in
the white crystal form since pure compound is a solid below 62В°F. It bears an
irritating pungent odour with the threshold limit 1ppm or 2.5mg/m3. It has burning
taste.

The Volga River
The Volga River is a riverine located in Europe, Russia in a federal subject of Russia,
Astrakhan Oblast. Its direct location is Longitude: 45°50′30″N Latitude:
47°58′17″E. Volgograd and Nizhny Novgorod are important cities on the
bank of the Volga. The Volga River is the largest river in Europe in terms of length of
length, discharge, and watershed. It starts in the Valdai Hills of north western Russia
and flows approximately 3,685 km before creating this delta and pouring into the
Caspian Sea. The Volga Riveralso contains a wide variety of flora and fauna. The
river is split into 4 different sections: upper, middle, lower and the delta. The Volga
basin is divided into four major sections, including the Upper Volga, Middle Volga,
Lower Volga, and delta. The delta is within the Volga Delta Northern Caspian
Drainages ecoregion and had a length of about 160 km.
The Volga River is under investigation because dams upstream have altered the
natural flow regime of the river. Another reason is the mass amount of fishing and
lastly the river is under investigation because of the poor water quality.
The Volga River had its beginnings in the glacial Valdai Hills (225 meters above sea
level), which is located near Moscow in the northwest. During the 13th century, the
southern part of the Volga River, below Nizhny Novgorod, saw the invasion of
Mongols, whose influence is evident in cities like Astrakhan and Kazan. Along with
the establishment of cities, dams and reservoirs, the
Hero Makes A Hero
Heroes are the certain type of people that would give up their own life, just to
protect you and the people around them when things go wrong. A quote from
Robert De Niro he says Time goes on so whatever you re going to do, do it. Do it
right now. I think a hero would use this quote in a tough situation like if he were
trying to save someone he would do it now because time goes on. A herorepresents
the people, a hero makes many sacrifices that a everyday person couldn t think of
doing. A hero is always trying to do the right even when things don t always go their
way, or the way they need it to go, overall, hero stays strong. Heroes make sacrifices
to protect those around them. A quote from Doctor
Says this at lincoln s funeral Though our beloved president is slain our beloved
country is saved Over the grief of president lincoln being assassinated, he believes
that lincoln is an almighty hero for re uniting the union, defeating the south, and
free all the slaves in the South. Lincoln is recognized for all his accomplishments,
and his overall heroism. Lincoln made so many sacrifices and I think he is the
hero of the north and liberator of the slaves. Another quote from Donald Trump is
Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war. This quote
represents a hero in so many ways because sometimes a hero cannot have always go
their way. But if the hero learns from his mistakes like what trump is saying when he
says the battle is lost learn from your
The Reasons Behind Puerto Rican Migration to America
Essay
The Reasons Behind Puerto Rican Migration to America
As a Puerto Rican who was born and raised in Hartford, I did not think much about
how or why my parents are here in the United States. It was after reading the articles
in Hist 247 Reader: Latinos in the USA that I began to question the reasons and
conditions of my grandparent s migration. Many think that Puerto Ricans began to
migrate to the United States after 1898 when the United States took over Puerto Rico
but Puerto Ricans have been migrating to the US since 1840 s. The Puerto Rican
migration is best described in two different experiences. The first experience from
later 19th Century to early 20th Century is the migration due to the economic and
social situations in Puerto Rico ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, the United States possessed that power and transformed their island into a
metropolitan economy. Workers were subjected to the changing demands of US
capital expansion, and their migratory movements were shaped accordingly. The
United States used Puerto Rico as a medium through which they could gain power
and accumulate more monetary resources. And undoubtedly, Puerto Ricans signified
nothing more to them than a reserved workforce . In the article Imperialism and
Agrarian Capitalism 1898 1930 the author writes, Between 1898 1940 the growth,
employment , and patterns of movement of the Puerto Rican population were
conditioned by the establishment and decline of the capitalist plantation system on
the Island. The degree of relative overpopulation varied in the major branches of
production cane cultivation, sugar manufacture, tobacco and needlework and this
engendered both the movement within the colony and the emigration out (104). As
overpopulation became a big issue so did unemployment. Migration occurred because
many Puerto Ricans thought that by leaving Puerto Rico they would find a better life
through contract working or through Operation Bootstrap.
Bernardo Vega is a great example of a tabaquero who left Puerto Rico in 1916 in
search for better opportunities in the United States. When arriving to the United
States all he faced was discrimination, prejudices, unfairness, and disappointment.

must know how each species of wildlife is affected when harvesting timber in an
area (Halterman, 1973). Wild turkeys have been known to use pine plantations that
have been burned in the past 6 years, more than any forest type when nesting. These
plantations are anywhere from 13 to 18 years old, with each of them being thinned at
least one time (Smith, 1990). Studies in east central Mississippi show that wild
turkeys have almost doubled the home range area during the winter when compared
to summer . Studies show that wild turkeys use pine plantations less during the winter

Method validation
The analytical method of 3 MCPD and 1,3 DCP was validated using linearity, limit of
detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). The LOD and LOQ was
determined by the Equations LOD = 3.14 * Пѓ and LOQ = 10 * Пѓ, where Пѓ is the
standard deviation of the specific sample spiked standard solution. Moreover, the
accuracy and precision (inter, intra day) for the samples were determined.
The method validation results for the 3 MCPD analytical method were evaluated
as follow. The LODs of 3 MCPD in various matrices ranged from 4.18 to 10.56 ng g
1. Moreover, the accuracy and precision were found to be ~90.38 122.46%, ~1.89
25.22% relative standard deviation (RSD), respectively. In contrast, the LODs of
1,3 DCP following matrices were found to be the ~1.06 3.15 ng g 1. The accuracy
and precision were determined as ~91.24 113.40 and ~1.42 10.58% RSD.
Meanwhile, all the3 MCPD and 1,3 DCP calibration curves in diverse matrices have
higher linearity than 0.99.

to see dozens of pictures of hypersexualized men and women advertising items like

images have been a constant for majority of people s lives and so we as a society
have become complacent to them, it is expected to only see very beautiful people on
television shows, commercials, and other forms of entertainment and advertising.

Role Of Predictive Analytics For Asset Optimization Of Oil...
Role of Predictive analytics in Asset Optimization in Oil and Gas Industry
In recent times, Predictive analytics has started to play an important role in asset
optimization in various industries. One such industry which is highly asset intensive
is the oil and gas industry, a capital intensive and equipment heavy industry with lot
of scope for improvement in asset management, supply chain network optimization,
and operational management with its multiple assets ranging from drilling rigs, wells
in the upstream segment to pipelines and refineries.
Asset Optimization: A challenge
The oil and gas industry is important in the sense that it plays an important role in
shaping the future of many economies around the world. A quick analysis of the
financial statements of the five super majors (BP, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Shel
) shows that plant, property and equipment on average accounts for 51% of total
assets. [1]
Hence proper maintenance, management of the capital assets is highly desirable.
These assets are highly costly to design, build, operate and maintain.
Existing oil wells are drying up at an alarming rate, hence making it difficult for
companies to cope. It is getting increasingly difficult to find newer sources from
where oil can be extracted. In many cases they are deep underground, difficult to drill
and distant from companies existing sites.
Another challenge facing these industries is that in order to extract oil from these
wells, firms need cutting edge

The prophets are difficult to interpret mainly due to misunderstandings about their
function and form (Fee/Stuart p182). Most dictionaries define the word prophecy as
foretelling or prediction of what is to come. Using the prophets in this way is highly
discerning, for less than 2% of OT prophecy is messianic; less than 5% describes the
new covenant age and less than 1% concerns future events (Fee/Stuart p182). The
prophets usually announced the immediate future of Judah, Israel and the
surrounding nations, rather than our future. Those events were forthcoming for them
but past for us (Fee/Stuart p182). The primary function of prophets as a

The Exegetical Task: Some parts of the Bible call for time and patient revision to
understand. Some people find help in Bible dictionaries, commentaries and Bible
handbooks (Fee/Stuart p189). Fee and Stuart feels that everyone needs to understand
both the prophets era and the context of a single oracle (Fee/Stuart p190). The
words spoken by the prophets at a variety of times and places are written down
without any indication as to where one oracle ends and another begins (Fee/Stuart
p193). The prophets employed an assortment of literary forms. 3 of the most common
are: The lawsuit , God is portrayed as the plaintiff, prosecuting attorney and judge
against the defendant, Israel (Fee/Stuart p194). The Woe, Woe oracles implicitly or
explicitly contain an announcement of distress, the reason for distress and a
prediction of doom. The promise , This contains an allusion to the future, a mention
of radical change and blessing (Fee/Stuart p195). Hermeneutical Suggestions: What is
God s word to us through these inspired oracles, spoken in another time to God s
people? Once we understand what God said to them then, we will hear it again in our
own surroundings (Fee/Stuart p199). The prophets messages were concentrated on
the near rather than the distant future (Fee/Stuart p200). Sometimes the New
Testament makes reference to Old Testamentpassages that don t seem to refer to

Stereotypes Of Teenage Girls
Introduction
We may not think or believe it ourselves, but the media is constantly ruling a huge
part of our lives and how we socially interact with others. Over many years it has
created many stereotypes and it shows quite a false representation of teenage girls.
But firstly what in fact is representation? Or stereotypes?
Representation
Representation is the process by which the media present us to the real world and
how they re present something back to us. For a huge number of us the media is a
main source for us to understand the world around us.
Stereotypes
A stereotype can be what we call an inaccurate ideology. It is targeted at a specific
group or individual such as teenage girls. An ideology is the beliefs, ideas and values
that are emboldened by the media.
For example we believe we think that we know what the ambitions are for most
teen girls; popularity, partying, pretty and BOYS!!! But actually this is only what
the media s representation of teen girls that has caused this ideological stereotype
of girls and their relational ambitions. Stereotypes that the media has produced has
shaped society as we know it. We are constantly surrounded by television social
media advertisements and all things media attempt to capture our attention. When
we look at stereotypes in the media we get what we call a positive negative win.
This is when the media text that we are looking at provides either a positive or
negative outlook and provides either a positive or

The Night Before The Moon Essay
Before the swan met the moon, there were only two beautiful things in her life
dancing and her beauty.
She knew the moon was a kind man, with his gentle eyes which turned into small
crescents when he smiled, but she would never be quite good enough for him. Even
though she danced and danced and danced, until the snow underneath her feet turned
into a river of red, she could only blend with the moonlight, but the swan was a swan.
And a swan could not be the moon.
So she offered herself to the moon, to the moon who must love her so much. She
stood there under his gaze in her naked glory, his large hands which could build
worlds, soft against her trembling skin. He tried to push her away, but the swan was

But what is the point of wishing upon a dying star?
The girl who thought she was a swan, she was actually a monster. She was a black
hole, she killed the moon.
The moon who used to be loved by the Sun was broken, it lost its light when it finally
left the Sun s shadow, there was no more moonlight for the girl to dance in, and the
moon wouldn t dance with her anymore.
Time used to chase her, but now she had all the time in the world, because the world
stopped spinning when the Sun stopped loving the moon.
The moon was no longer the moon, he was a thousand pieces of stars consumed by
the black hole, and the girl spent what felt like light years trying to find all the
pieces, and she tried to piece the moon back together.
But the girl never managed to get the moon back together quite right, because the

How To Become A Veterinarian
Our pets rely on us for their nutrition. So if you re making any judgments that could
lead to a mistake at the same time we have more control over our pet s diet than
our own Sweeny. The quote was said by Alison Sweeney in discussing the
important role of nutrition and how we care about what our pets eat and less about
what goes into our body affects them.Veterinarians care for the health of animals.
They diagnose , treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets . They
examine animals , treat and adress wounds and even euthanize animals. As well
they operate medical equipment such as x rays. Pursuing a job as a veterinarian is
very exciting especially if you love animals and your job will also be personally
fulfilling , great salary and benefits society buy saving animals lives. The first
advantage of becoming a veterinarian is that it s personally fulfilling.Veterinarians

Solar Energy is not a Solution to the American Energy Crisis
Solar Energy is not a Solution to America s Energy Crisis
With the growing cost of fuel for cars and the rolling blackouts of last summer, the
need for an alternative, cost effective, environment friendly energy source is
escalating. Many possible solutions have been presented, such as nuclear power,
wind power, and hydrogen fuel cells; prevalent among these is solar power.
Solar cells directly convert photons from the sun into electricity (Wikipedia). Solar
cells that convert both solar and non solar light are called photovoltaic cells
(Wikipedia 2006). They are made of semi conducting materials, most often silicon
(Aldous 2006). The simplest photovoltaic cells power watches and calculators while
larger, more complex systems can add ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Boron only has three electrons in the outer tier, so instead of having extra electrons
it has holes. These holes are just the absence of electrons so they have a positive
charge and can move about similarly to electrons. (Aldous 2006)
An electric field forms when N type and P type silicon are put in contact. The free
electrons on the N side see the holes in the P side and try to fill them in. All the
free electrons of the N type silicon do not how ever fill up all the free holes in the P
type silicon. At the junction between the two sides the electrons and holes mix and
form an electric field as a barrier. This causes the electrons to be able to flow from the
P side to the N side but not in the other. (Aldous 2006)
When light hits the solar cell, the energy frees the electron/hole pairs. Each photon
will free one electron and create one hole. When this happens close to the electron
field or if a hole and an electron wander into the field s range of
Solar Energy 4 influence, the field sends the electron to the N side and the hole to
the P side. (Aldous 2006)
If an external current path is provided then electrons flow to their original side (P)
doing work on the way. The electron flow provides current and the electrical field
creates voltage, and with voltage and current there is power. (Aldous 2006)

Tok Habit Is Stronger Than Reason to What Extent Is This...
Habit is stronger than reason. To what extent is this true in two areas of
knowledge? Habit could be referred to as a tradition people have. Many people
have habits that they are unaware of, for example, when people put their socks on,
some people do the right first and some people do the left first. Habit is a factor
that is present all through a person s daily life. Habit represents the way in which
we do things because we do it every day continuously. Habit is particularly
important because learning something doesn t make you better at it unless you
practice it enough times. An old kung fu saying is I m not afraid of the man that

Descriptive Essay About Having A Dog
At the young age of 14, I fell in love for the first time. Although not ideal, he was
white, covered with brown spots and innocent eyes; a young Chihuahua. Max and
I came into each other s lives on October 20, 2013, when my older brother told me
that a dog was coming home soon. Although I was afraid of dogs, having
previously been bit by one, I was oddly excited, and kept glancing at my phone and
at the window for the arrival of the new member to our family. Once the duo arrived,
my whole life would change. As my brother placed the small creature down, he
came running towards me with his small wagging tale and innocent eyes. Once he
began to lick my feet I knew I was in love. Our family settled on the name Max, but I
called him Marco, and from then on I would treat Marco as if he was my true blood
brother. This one lone puppy, taught me responsibility, compassion, and grief for
others, as no other person has ever made me feel.
Dogs are known for their gentle souls and friendliness, but they also teach humans
unexpected lessons; such is the same for Marco and my family. Having a dog is no
easy task, from the beginning Max created the label of being a handful. When my
cousin first picked him up, he began to urinate on her which generated a lot of
laughter and disgust at the same time. I was tasked with a lot of chores such as
cleaning him, feeding him, and taking him for walks around the neighborhood.
Bathing Max and wetting a cat both produced the same results: water

Idiopathic Epilepsy Research Paper
Epilepsy is a disorder where nerve cell activity in the brain becomes disturbed. This
activity causes sporadic electrical storms in the brain called seizures. During seizures,
people experience unusual behavior and symptoms. There are two major types of
epilepsy, idiopathic/cryptogenic, symptomatic. Both of these have different causes
and affect the body and mind in particular ways.
Idiopathic epilepsy is commonly associated with cryptogenic because they are very
similar. However, there are some main differences between the two. Idiopathic
epilepsy means that there is no cause for the abnormal activity occurring in the brain.
Cryptogenic epilepsy is when there is a likely cause, but doctors and specialists can t

oxygen), hematocrit(the percentage of blood made up of red blood cells), and mean

In some cases, epilepsy can be prevented. However, most of the time, this isn t the
case. Usually, epilepsy is genetic. Another common cause is traumatic head injury
from an accident. Preventing falls can lower your risk of getting epilepsy. In most
cases, though, it is hereditary. Normally, epilepsy occurs in someone who has a
family history of seizures.
Right now, there is no cure for epilepsy. There are, however, treatments that people
find helpful. Traditional treatments include prescription medications like Lyrica or
Zarontin for symptom control. Most of these prescriptions are to control seizures and
depending on what type of seizure a person has, they may take different medications
to regulate symptoms. Another traditional treatment is surgery. The most common
one is corpus callosotomy. This is when a person with extreme seizures has split

What Is The Theme Of Through The Tunnel By Doris
Lessing
Through the Tunnel It is widely known that through childhood and adolescence
growing up is not only inevitable but also difficult. In the short story Through the
tunnel the author, Doris Lessing shows this through the main character, Jerry, and his
journey in becoming more independent from his mother. Although the journey was
difficult in the end, Jerry has matured as a person and does not need his mother to
constantly be with him; but she becomes a place where he knows that he is safe. In
the short story, Through the Tunnel , the author portrays the difficulty of growing
up through symbolism and imagery. One example of how the author uses
symbolism to help the reader understand the struggles of growing up is by using
bright colors whenever he refers to the mother. The bright colors are used to
symbolize that Jerry s mother is his safe place to go to in need of help. According to
Doris Lessingpage 358 There she was, a speck of yellowunder an umbrella that
looked like a slice of orange peel. The color yellow, as the mother is being
described represents happiness. This means that Jerry s mother is the main source of
his joy. The color orange is used in caution signs and could mean that his mother is
reminding him to be careful, even without her being present. Another example of the
author using bright colors when referencing the mother is the following, His mother
walked on in front of him, carrying a bright striped bag in one hand (Lessing 356).

Case Study Of Clariant International Limited
Executive Summary
Clariant International Limited is a Swiss chemical company formed in 1995.
Through the acquisition of other chemical companies such as Hoechst and Sud
Chemie, Clariant has established itself as one of the world s leading specialty
chemical companies. Clariant is involved in multiple markets, including, but not
limited to, consumer care, biotechnology and industrial applications. Clariant is split
into 6 separate global divisions, which contain, in total, 19 different businesses.
The purpose of this case study is to answer the questions; what the cost to implement
each of the strategic options facing Clariant Corporation? What revenue growth is
necessary to break even and to maintain or improve profitability? And what non
financial criteria might be used to evaluate strategic options
Clariant faces issues with its marketing departments structure. The current model is
hampering Clariant. We have found that a change in structure is required to deal with
the issue. The theory used to deal with the issue is the national accounts system and
customer relationship management.

structure allows for a more knowledgeable sales force in charge of high potential
customers; those assigned an account team with members from multiple business

opportunities for cross divisional sales much easier. Currently it is estimated that the
sales force spends very little time doing this (appendix

A Note on the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster
The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is an accident
that took place at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine in April 1986. The accident was
because of a flawed Soviet reactor design, severe mistakes by the plant operators,
and direct result of Cold War isolation. As the resultant steam explosion and fires
emitted radioactive reactor core into the downwind and the Earth s atmosphere, the
accident was also attributed to the lack of any safety culture. The Chernobyl Nuclear
Disaster was a unique event because it s the only accident in commercial nuclear
powerhistory in which radiation related losses took place. Nonetheless, the design of
the reactor is exceptional and the disaster of minimal relevance to other elements of
the nuclear industry.
Background on the Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant consisted of four
nuclear reactors with each of them capable of producing 1 gigawatt of electric power.
During the time when the disaster took place, these four reactors were producing
approximately 10 percent of the electricity used in Ukraine. The construction of this
power plant started in the 1970s with the first reactor commissioned in 1977 and the
fourth in 1983. At the time when the disaster happened, the other two nuclear reactors
were still under construction (West par, 4). In April 1986, the operating crew planned
to evaluate whether the turbines of the fourth reactor could produce adequate energy
to maintain the running of the coolant
Defintion Essay
Defintion Essay Is it Possible to Define Art?
Art is the intentional use of some medium to communicate emotions or ideas between
minds. Some combination of the five senses is used to conduct information, so art
may take the form of music, painting, sculpture, dance, and others. Art may be
collaborative, as with the presentation of a symphony, which may involve a
composer, a conductor, players, and a lighting crewall working to create the art of
the presentation. Also, art occurs in at least one level of abstraction removed from
reality, a representation of the real thing.
There is no requirement of beauty in art. Indeed, some of the highest quality in art is
attained by some of the ugliest things. An example is the film, ... Show more content

When I experience Samuel Barber s Adagio with my brother, the message I receive
is clear, but it is not the same as the message my brother receives. It is likely that
Samuel Barber intended neither. Nevertheless, the piece is effective art, since it
communicates messages.
Even so, there must have been some intention with which Barber wrote the piece. In
general, art must be the creation of a mind, or group of minds, with at least one
purpose. As such, art is never an accident, whereas it may have some accidental
effects on certain members of an audience. The requirement that art have some
purpose from the artist rejects the notion that computers can create art. Computers
may be used as a medium for people to create art, and computers may create what
resembles art, but computers cannot create art.
Another characteristic of art is its necessary element of impracticality. That is not
to say that artistic things cannot be practical; rather, there must be some part of
the piece that does more than simply serve a function. For example, ordering a
cheeseburger at McDonald s is an intentional use of the medium of a voice to
communicate a message (the desire for food) between two minds (the customer
and the server). However, it seems somewhat clear that this extreme case does not
constitute a work of art. Still, it would be possible to compose a vocal piece of music
that qualifies as art, even if the words are still, I d like a Big Mac, please. The art

Travel And Tourism In The Philippines
It was on September 21, 1972 when President Ferdinand E. Marcos placed the
Philippines under Martial Law. The President claimed that lawless elements
supported by a foreign power were plotting to overthrow the lawfully elected
government and that martial law was necessary to save the Republic and reform
the society (Lim). On the other hand, tourism is defined as the activities of persons
traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than
one consecutive year for leisure business and other purposes (Cruz 1). The term
travel and tourism industry has come to mean all the private, public and voluntary
sector organizations that provide services for the traveling public and work
together to promote the socio economic benefits of the industry worldwide (Cruz
9). In this industry, companies and government conduct businesses since it became
an emerging industry in 1970s. Tourism industry is a rising trade during Marcos
time since there is an increase in the number of tourist arrivals starting from 1970
up to 1980. From 242, 811 in 1973, it increased to 1,008,158 in 1980. However, it
can also be observed that there was a negative growth rate from 1981 until 1986. The
rise of travel and tourism in the Philippines during Martial law were caused by
several actions of government. Department of Tourism was built in 1973 and it was
in charge in the marketing and promotions of the country s destinations to
international market. The improvement of

Friedrich Engels in the late 1840s, they did not come up with this as a means of

then people have applied that to literary theory. Basics are very concrete, they re
very scientific and very logical. They focus on the material and do not believe in
spiritual so they don t believe that we as humans or spiritual beings, they believe that
everything is material. When they investigate something it s always explainable, it s
always logical, it s always concrete. It s something you can see or feel or touch....

1.0 Introduction
The human race is completely reliant on technological innovations. A global village
is what the world feels like nowadays. The Internet has revolutionized the aspect of
globalization. With the Internet, the world seems to be one small village. The
numbers of people signing up daily for the purposes of Internet are increasing day by
day. The IT experts have noted this increase and hence, the Internet service is
metamorphosing at a rate that nobody had anticipated earlier. The Internet has
numerous features, which are evolving concurrently. However, for the purpose of this
research paper, the focus is directed on the Internet Naming System. Numerous
individuals and associations have realized the importance of the Internet in their daily
operations. To respond to this effect, people are signing up for emails, websites and
other features, which Internet offers to them for interface and communication with
the rest of the world. All these activities need to be uniquely identified and hence, the
work is currently overwhelming. The naming of the current database and other
features has been a challenge. For a while now, the Domain Naming System has been
used as a naming standard.
We seek to explore the element of Internet Naming System. How has it been done
before? What does it entail? We also seek to explore the future of the naming system

Franklin came down with polio while at Campobello for summer vacation.
Poliomyelitis (polio) is disease that affects the muscle and the nerves and can lead
to partial or full paralysis. Symptoms of polio include fever, muscle spasms, and
muscle pain. The treatment is heat pads to reduce pain, therapy and pain killers.
Franklin was paralyzed from the chest down at first than the disease relaxed and
only paralyzed him from the hips down. No one knew how polio was contracted. It
may have been because of the exhausting weeks with the Navy Administration or
from the chill he received after falling in to a cold bay while fishing. It also may
have been the combo of tiredness and the chill (Tugwell 56). Doctors were called
for a diagnosis and each time they gave a wrong diagnosis. It wasn t until two
weeks after contracting the disease that a specialist gave a correct diagnosis and it
was two weeks after the specialist came that Franklin was transported to New York
for therapy (57). He was so determined to overcome his disability that he devoted
seven years of his life to grueling physical therapy (Goodwind 109). But
unfortunately he would never walk again without the help of steel braces on his legs
and a strong arm to lean on.
As Franklin was recovering Eleanor really became important to Franklin as his
representative. She made appearances to keep his name in public so that the people

Separation Exists Between Society And The Penal System
Separation exists between society and the penal system, and due to this, there is a
grave lack of knowledge of what is happening behind bars and how we can improve
the situation we have currently in regards to the prison system. There are major
flaws that exist within the penal system, and Angela Davis highlighted the main one
of secrecy. We know based off of research that our prisonpopulation commonly
consists of individuals who struggle academically (Petersilia, 2003, pg 32).
Because of this lack of a strong education, they may not possess basic skills like
reading, with about 20 % performing at an illiterate level within state facilities
(Petersilia, 2003, pg 32), which prisons are not going around glorifying. Another sort
of hidden and degrading factor that Davis does not directly mention is the use of
solitary confinement. We learned from Maggie s presentation the harmful mental
health effects on those whom are placed in solitary confinement (December 1,
presentations). While in solitary confinement, inmates are hidden away in a place of
punishment within a place of punishment (Conover, 2001, pg 126), while being
degraded with neither little to no time outside, nor any human interaction (Conover,
2001, pg 127). It s disturbing that it was not intended as a form of punishment, yet is
used as one now (October 22, film). During the History of Prisons film we watched,
they explained the use of solitary confinement for reflection purposes (October 22,
film).

Unusual Languages of the World

2. Define pidgin and creole and explain the difference between them.
Pidgins and creoles are both languages that occur when two people of different
languages are communicating (p.232). In order to define a pidgin, it is important
to look at the process in which a pidgin develops. When contact between speakers
of two different languages occurs and they begin to create ways of communication
through words and phrases, pre pidgin is developing. A pidgin develops as a new
language when the original group or several groups of people begin using the pre
pidgin to communicate as the common language. The pidgin is then being used as the
lingua franca (p. 233). Depending on the use of the language, there is also a
restricted pidgin and expanded pidgin. Restricted pidgin is only used when
necessary for communication and typically has small vocabulary and little
grammar. Expanded pidgin is a pidgin that is used everyday and in different
entities such as religion or the government. This type of pidgin has an expanded
vocabulary and grammar. On the other hand, a creole is a pidgin that children learn
and use as their first language. With children learn the language as their first, it will
expand to community usage. Gramatics are much more complex in a creole as is
the vocabulary of the language (p.234). There are differences between a pidgin and
creole that can be defined. A pidgin is spoken between people of different languages
with less vocabulary and

Esther Greenwood s Search for Identity in Sylvia

One s identity is the most important lesson to be learned. It is vital part of life
knowing who you are in order to live a fulfilled life. Without knowing your identity,
and the way you perceive life, it is difficult for others to understand you, along with a
struggle to live a happy life. In Sylvia Plath s The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood
struggles to find her own identity, and in the process, she develops a mental illness
which helps her discover the person she is on the inside. In her search for identity,
Esther often compares herself to others. One sign of depression is the feeling the

At the beginning of the novel, Esther describes her life as a tornado. I felt very still
and very empty, the way the eye of a tornado must feel, moving dully along in the
middle of he surrounding hullabaloo. (3) Esther feels as if the world is going crazy
and spinning around her, yet she is standing still in the eye of the storm, not knowing
which direction to move in. When Buddy Willard comes to visit in chapter five, they
talk about a poem, however, Esther is day dreaming about an imaginary conversation
she wishes the would have. Throughout the novel, Esther struggled with what she felt
how a woman in her society should act. At times, she feels as if there is no point to
college because most women only become secretaries anyway. She feels as if she
should be learning short hand and other techniques she should be learning for the
secretary roll, however she does not want to. Esther wants to be a writer, however,
during the time of the novel, society gave women the role as housewife. Esther felt
pressure to settle down and start a family. No matter what accomplishments Esther
achieves in her life, it doesn t matter too much because they will not do her much

she becomes a mother, it would be assumed that she would give up her passion for
writing. This discourages Esther because she is not sure that is what she wants with
her life. The role models in the novel have a
Pedro Jose Diaz s Portrait Of Maria Rosa De Rivera
Bahareh S
In Pedro Jose Diaz s painting, Portrait of Maria Rosa de Rivera, the painter utilizes
various techniques to project meaning embedded behind the lady in a dress. Diaz
illustrates the grandeur characteristics of the affluent women prevalent in the 18th
century through by utilizing size and medium. Through the manipulation of
techniques such light and color, along side the elements of representational and
description shading, Diaz subtly and strategically designs a direction in which the eye
of the viewer would follow across the realistic, three dimensional painting. Additional
features such as line, space, composition and title, serve to further highlight the
portrait s static yet profound subject.

The author chooses to incorporate pure black hues in addition to a variety of
primary and secondary colors. Red and blue are the primary colors that Diaz
employs in his portrait. In addition, the painter incorporates the secondary colors of
orange and purple. Both the primary and secondary colors retain the characteristic
of gradation in value. The rich red and orange colors are bright in the first half of
the paintings, especially in the curtain and in the lavish, ornate dress. These
vivacious, bright and lit colors, however, gradually fade and grow dim. Diaz
applies this technique of fading to enable the audience s eyes to follow diagonally
across the work. The viewer s eyes begin from the left side of the painting. This is
where the source of light is evident. Then the individual s gaze continues all the
way to the top right corner of the painting. Here, Diaz constructs the calm scenery
that fades out of the window and into the far woods. The author uses various shades
of blue, from an ominous shade to one of light pigment to evoke feelings of gloom
and tranquility. The mirror and back wall exhibit a prominently dark and rich purple
color. This bleak pigment constructs a bold contrast to the vivid subject posing in her
luminous and elaborate dress. Such a contrast redirects the focus of the viewer s eyes

Argumentative Essay On Youth Sports
Youth Sports
Have you ever seen 7 year old s play soccer? Some leagues have them play three on
three. What can you expect from a kid playing that young? You have heard coaches
yelling commands at the kids to keep them on track. During the same time, you
probably have heard the coach during a time out or a break in the game raising his
voice; what they should be doing and what they are doing wrong. This has brought
up the debates over the past years involving youth sports and whether you should let
your child play or not. Tee ball, soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, is among the
sports parents contemplate to sign their child up for. Some of that debate also
includes what is the perfect age they should start playing sports. If your child is
under 10 years old you should not put your child in youth sports because; there is a
lot of bad coaches, parents interfering with the coaches and officials during games,
and coaches only want to win on game day. As a matter of fact, you can hear or
read evidence of bad coaching in youth sports. The coach called one player a
f*****g retard in front of his teammates. (Coben, Harlan. That s Not Coaching. It s
child Abuse . Opinion World. Bloomberg). You have probably seen it firsthand. A
coach throwing their clipboard, yelling at a child for missing up, and even telling
the kids at halftime what they did wrong instead of what they did right. Every year if
you keep up with youth sports around the nation, not just your state, you can read
about how parents are complaining about having a bad coach for their child, how
they did not play, how they were not taught the sport. Some coaches are only
coaching because they signed up their child to play a sport and they believe they
can teach him and others the sport. Knowing the sport, and knowing how to teach
the sport are two different things. Some believe they need to run their program for
10 and under like a boot camp and yell at the kids and talk down to them in front of
other kids. Most coaches in leagues are not certified to coach so anyone can be a
coach, if you pass a background check. This process does not make every person
who signs up their child for youth sports very confident. A coach who usually
volunteers is a

cholelithiasis or cholescystitis: Have you had any trouble with heartburn, passing
gas, epigastric pain, or any trouble with eating fatty food or cabbage? (Huether

quadrant 30 minutes after eating a fatty meal. If the pain is intermittent or steady
with pain radiating to the mid upper back it could indicate a gallstone is located in
the common duct (Huether McCance, 2012). Ultrasounds and abdominal CT scans

Physiologic Effects Of Shift Work On Nurses

Berger and Hobbs (2006), argued that modifying external factors such as diet and

nurses. Some of the main topics that the researchers focused on are:
1.Basis for biological rhythm
The circadian rhythm is affected for nurses working the shift work. The study
mentions that the biological rhythm consists of the external rhythm which covers
meal times, sleep times and social activities, and the internal rhythm which is the
circadian rhythm. The fact that the circadian rhythm is affected with shift work
nurses by the difference of night and day sleep time, their social activities and meal
times are also affected. This makes it more difficult for them to adjust with their
social life which in itself creates stress. Moreover, stress increases cortisol levels
which is a hormone that regulates the amount of fat stored in the body which makes
shift workers gain weight by increasing their BMI.

hunted by the fairest ladies, they invoke the goddess Venus who transforms the
beasts into young, faithful men. At the end, the narrator is added in and is offered

Creating Crucial Conversations Summary
Creating and Completing Crucial Conversations
Introduction
The acclaimed book Crucial Conversations discusses the intricacies of communication
and analyzes the potential reasons for dialog deterioration in a group setting. The
authors emphasize the importance of making people feel safe to exchange ideas and
the techniques to restore balance when safety is threatened. This book, although
unique in its views, has its roots embedded in proven psychological theories by James
Lang and Cannon Bard, which state that emotions cause physiological arousal that
stimulates emotional brain activity but reduces the ability for cognitive reasoning
(Passer Smith, 2007, p. 384 386).
Purpose and Why?
So, why is keeping control of our emotions so crucial to dialog? As human beings,
we converse with each other at all times of the day or night and it is the primary
method of communication. For most of us, the bulk of our communication occurs at
work and ends with family members or friends by day s end. At any point, one of
these dialog sessions can become a crucial conversation if people become defensive,
frightened, hurt, or angry during communication. According to the ... Show more

engages the reader but also the problematic practice of being a female designer.
Attfield discusses the current situation of discrimination and inequality in the

  • 4. The Blade Of The Craft Guild The Blade of the Craft Guild realized his mission would be much more difficult than he expected when less than twenty steps into the Wretched Quarter a man in a torn and dirty black robe confronted him. The Blade was covered in filth, had on a dirty and torn yellow tunic, and should have looked like any other wretched Craft Guild citizen returning from across the river. Yet the man made a beeline to him. Name your guild, the man asked. I am a Custodian. I clean the floors in the Warehouse District. The Blade couldn t quite believe he was seeing a man in black. Maybe there was some roving gang that liked to pretend they were the heir of Pietro or something. He dropped his hand to the stiletto sheathed against his leg. Where do you live? The Blade nodded in some vague direction. Over that aways. Which street? The man in black was not backing down. The Blade couldn t quite figure out what was going on, but he didn t want to raise any alarms either. Who wants to know? The Blade hoped that moving to an aggressive approach might do the trick. The gang member was probably used to people cowering in front of him. To the Blade s shock, the man in black didn t even ask another question. He reached out and grabbed the Blade by the arm. You re coming with me. The man s grip was like iron, and the Blade was yanked nearly off his feet. Looking around, he was surrounded by quite a few people, but not enough to stop his escape, which was good as he had very few options. He
  • 5. The Reformers During Andrew Jackson The Reformers During Andrew Jackson s term as president, many people seemed to be more involved in wanting to change people s lives and equalize politics. Jackson believed that a common man should have the right to have a voice in democracy. (Grubb) Therefore, once Jackson was elected president people began focusing on the crisis in the American society. Several reformers stated their perspectives on different things that America can improve on whether it was about abolition, mental health care, education, religious reform, or women s rights. Slavery has been a continuous altercation in abolishing it or keeping it. William Lloyed Garrison preached about abolition of slavery stating that slavery does not define Christians. Slaves have the right to have the same exact rights and freedom as a normal white American. As slavery was still going on, William questions what Christianity has done for our slave population. In a religious point of view, slavery is a national sin that must be removed. William compares how slavery would be for a white person versus an African American and states, The argument that these white slaves are degraded would not then obtain. You would say: It is enough that they are white and in bondage, and they ought immediately to be set free. (William Garrison) William sets a growing sense of social responsibilities by trying to get America to look at slavery in the eyes of a Christian. The American society today has drastically changed into everyone

At the time, the future of the Revolution was in serious doubt men were freezing, starving, and the Continental Army was dissolving around General Washington. More than anything else, he needed a victory. Ketchum displays to the reader how exactly the colonials got into such a distressing situation in the first place. Traveling back to 1774 and 1775 Ketchum explores the reason behind why and how the entire situation occurred in the first place. The motivations of both the English crown and the colonials are explored throughout the book. For example, the motivations of King George III are explored in the section Everyone Who Does Not Agree With Me Is A Traitor . Ketchum describes the early life of George III which would motivate his latest moves against the colonies. George III felt he had to almost be more English than the English themselves , to paraphrase the honor of England and the crown were his preeminent concerns. Ketchum also described the wide variety of ailments, mostly hereditary ones, which plagued the king. Put these together and it s no surprise he was less than willing to listen to the pleas of his colonial subjects. Ketchum also went into a good deal of detail as to the workings and motivations of the British government at the time. Finally, he lists the events leading up to the actual winter of 1776, the conditions on the ground and then goes over the actual

The Reasons Behind Puerto Rican Migration to America Essay The Reasons Behind Puerto Rican Migration to America As a Puerto Rican who was born and raised in Hartford, I did not think much about how or why my parents are here in the United States. It was after reading the articles in Hist 247 Reader: Latinos in the USA that I began to question the reasons and conditions of my grandparent s migration. Many think that Puerto Ricans began to migrate to the United States after 1898 when the United States took over Puerto Rico but Puerto Ricans have been migrating to the US since 1840 s. The Puerto Rican migration is best described in two different experiences. The first experience from later 19th Century to early 20th Century is the migration due to the economic and social situations in Puerto Rico ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, the United States possessed that power and transformed their island into a metropolitan economy. Workers were subjected to the changing demands of US capital expansion, and their migratory movements were shaped accordingly. The United States used Puerto Rico as a medium through which they could gain power and accumulate more monetary resources. And undoubtedly, Puerto Ricans signified nothing more to them than a reserved workforce . In the article Imperialism and Agrarian Capitalism 1898 1930 the author writes, Between 1898 1940 the growth, employment , and patterns of movement of the Puerto Rican population were conditioned by the establishment and decline of the capitalist plantation system on the Island. The degree of relative overpopulation varied in the major branches of production cane cultivation, sugar manufacture, tobacco and needlework and this engendered both the movement within the colony and the emigration out (104). As overpopulation became a big issue so did unemployment. Migration occurred because many Puerto Ricans thought that by leaving Puerto Rico they would find a better life through contract working or through Operation Bootstrap. Bernardo Vega is a great example of a tabaquero who left Puerto Rico in 1916 in search for better opportunities in the United States. When arriving to the United States all he faced was discrimination, prejudices, unfairness, and disappointment. Throughout the novel

One such industry which is highly asset intensive is the oil and gas industry, a capital intensive and equipment heavy industry with lot of scope for improvement in asset management, supply chain network optimization, and operational management with its multiple assets ranging from drilling rigs, wells in the upstream segment to pipelines and refineries. The prophets employed an assortment of literary forms. 3 of the most common are: The lawsuit , God is portrayed as the plaintiff, prosecuting attorney and judge against the defendant, Israel (Fee/Stuart p194). The Woe, Woe oracles implicitly or explicitly contain an announcement of distress, the reason for distress and a prediction of doom. The promise , This contains an allusion to the future, a mention of radical change and blessing (Fee/Stuart p195). Hermeneutical Suggestions: What is God s word to us through these inspired oracles, spoken in another time to God s people? Once we understand what God said to them then, we will hear it again in our own surroundings (Fee/Stuart p199). The prophets messages were concentrated on the near rather than the distant future (Fee/Stuart p200). Sometimes the New Testament makes reference to Old Testamentpassages that don t seem to refer to what the New Testament says they do

Solar cells directly convert photons from the sun into electricity (Wikipedia). Solar cells that convert both solar and non solar light are called photovoltaic cells (Wikipedia 2006). At the junction between the two sides the electrons and holes mix and form an electric field as a barrier. In the short story Through the tunnel the author, Doris Lessing shows this through the main character, Jerry, and his journey in becoming more independent from his mother. Although the journey was difficult in the end, Jerry has matured as a person and does not need his mother to constantly be with him; but she becomes a place where he knows that he is safe. In the short story, Through the Tunnel , the author portrays the difficulty of growing up through symbolism and imagery. One example of how the author uses symbolism to help the reader understand the struggles of growing up is by using bright colors whenever he refers to the mother. The bright colors are used to symbolize that Jerry s mother is his safe place to go to in need of help. According to Doris Lessingpage 358 There she was, a speck of yellowunder an umbrella that looked like a slice of orange peel. The color yellow, as the mother is being described represents happiness. This means that Jerry s mother is the main source of his joy. The color orange is used in caution signs and could mean that his mother is reminding him to be careful, even without her being present. Another example of the author using bright colors when referencing the mother is the following, His mother walked on in front of him, carrying a bright striped bag in one hand (Lessing 356). The accident was because of a flawed Soviet reactor design, severe mistakes by the plant operators, and direct result of Cold War isolation. As the resultant steam explosion and fires emitted radioactive reactor core into the downwind and the Earth s atmosphere, the accident was also attributed to the lack of any safety culture. The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster was a unique event because it s the only accident in commercial nuclear powerhistory in which radiation related losses took place. Nonetheless, the design of the reactor is exceptional and the disaster of minimal relevance to other elements of the nuclear industry. Background on the Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant consisted of four nuclear reactors with each of them capable of producing 1 gigawatt of electric power. During the time when the disaster took place, these four reactors were producing approximately 10 percent of the electricity used in Ukraine. The construction of this power plant started in the 1970s with the first reactor commissioned in 1977 and the fourth in 1983. At the time when the disaster happened, the other two nuclear reactors were still under construction (West par, 4). • 37. Defintion Essay Defintion Essay Is it Possible to Define Art? Art is the intentional use of some medium to communicate emotions or ideas between minds. Some combination of the five senses is used to conduct information, so art may take the form of music, painting, sculpture, dance, and others. Art may be collaborative, as with the presentation of a symphony, which may involve a composer, a conductor, players, and a lighting crewall working to create the art of the presentation. Also, art occurs in at least one level of abstraction removed from reality, a representation of the real thing. There is no requirement of beauty in art. When I experience Samuel Barber s Adagio with my brother, the message I receive is clear, but it is not the same as the message my brother receives. It is likely that Samuel Barber intended neither. Nevertheless, the piece is effective art, since it communicates messages. Even so, there must have been some intention with which Barber wrote the piece. In general, art must be the creation of a mind, or group of minds, with at least one purpose. As such, art is never an accident, whereas it may have some accidental effects on certain members of an audience. The requirement that art have some purpose from the artist rejects the notion that computers can create art. Computers may be used as a medium for people to create art, and computers may create what resembles art, but computers cannot create art. Another characteristic of art is its necessary element of impracticality. That is not to say that artistic things cannot be practical; rather, there must be some part of the piece that does more than simply serve a function. For example, ordering a cheeseburger at McDonald s is an intentional use of the medium of a voice to communicate a message (the desire for food) between two minds (the customer and the server). However, it seems somewhat clear that this extreme case does not constitute a work of art. Still, it would be possible to compose a vocal piece of music that qualifies as art, even if the words are still, I d like a Big Mac, please. The art enters

There are major flaws that exist within the penal system, and Angela Davis highlighted the main one of secrecy. We know based off of research that our prisonpopulation commonly consists of individuals who struggle academically (Petersilia, 2003, pg 32). Because of this lack of a strong education, they may not possess basic skills like reading, with about 20 % performing at an illiterate level within state facilities (Petersilia, 2003, pg 32), which prisons are not going around glorifying. Another sort of hidden and degrading factor that Davis does not directly mention is the use of solitary confinement. We learned from Maggie s presentation the harmful mental health effects on those whom are placed in solitary confinement (December 1, presentations). While in solitary confinement, inmates are hidden away in a place of punishment within a place of punishment (Conover, 2001, pg 126), while being degraded with neither little to no time outside, nor any human interaction (Conover, 2001, pg 127). Pidgins and creoles are both languages that occur when two people of different languages are communicating (p.232). In order to define a pidgin, it is important to look at the process in which a pidgin develops. When contact between speakers of two different languages occurs and they begin to create ways of communication through words and phrases, pre pidgin is developing. A pidgin develops as a new language when the original group or several groups of people begin using the pre pidgin to communicate as the common language. The pidgin is then being used as the lingua franca (p. 233). Depending on the use of the language, there is also a restricted pidgin and expanded pidgin. Restricted pidgin is only used when necessary for communication and typically has small vocabulary and little grammar. Expanded pidgin is a pidgin that is used everyday and in different entities such as religion or the government. This type of pidgin has an expanded vocabulary and grammar. On the other hand, a creole is a pidgin that children learn and use as their first language. With children learn the language as their first, it will expand to community usage. Gramatics are much more complex in a creole as is the vocabulary of the language (p.234). There are differences between a pidgin and creole that can be defined.
