years the economic instability and high levels of income inequalities and poverty have hurt Brazil.

Bringing Back the Big Guns A Star Wars: The Force Awakens Analysis
It s true the Force, the Jedi, all of it. It s all true (Harrison Ford, The Force Awakens). The new Star
Wars flick The Force Awakens burst onto the big screen with enormous critical and monetary success
this past winter, and it seems that the franchise has truly been revived from the overall upsets of the
prequels back to its epic roots in pop culture. But does the movie really hold up compared to the
original trilogy? Indeed, the film shines through its engaging plot, important themes and flawless
technique.
The Force Awakens is very similar in plot to A New Hope, but there are plenty of interesting twists.
The movie starts off on the desert planet of Jakku. Poe, a rebel fighter, is taken into custody by the big
bad of the film Kylo Ren. However, Finn, one of the First Order s stormtroopers, helps him to escape
Ren s ship and they crash land on Jakku. With Poe seemingly killed in the crash, Finn wanders into
town and meets our main heroine, Rey, who is a scavenger fending for herself on Jakku. Rey has
found a BB 8 droid belonging to Poe and the Rebel Alliance with a map piece leading to the missing
Jedi Luke Skywalker. Finn lies to Rey about being a rebel fighter to escape Jakku with her. On their
journey towards the Rebel Alliance, the two encounter friends and foes alike, and Rey ends up
captured by Ren due to her awakened Force powers. With the help of the

Private Security Forces Essay
I. Introduction
Private Security Companies (PSC) are companies that offer military and security services around the
world in austere and undeveloped nations, as well as in developing and democratizing states. Made up
of highly skilled individuals, PSCs have available to them an arsenal of unique and coveted
capabilities their clients consider essential in their specific environment. From a dangerous armed
combat mission to more fulfilling mission of supporting humanitarian aid, PSCs offer the ability for
their clients to bridge gaps in military and security related activities around the globe. For all the good
that they do, PSCs have had their issues over the years with rogue contractors and corrupt owners.

II. Literature Review
Overview of Private Security Forces
There is a clear consensus among researchers that private military forces have taken part in national
and international conflicts for centuries, with the earliest instance of mercenary type forces reaching
back to around 1500 BC (Bayley, p 15; Herbst, p 282 289; Phelps, p 830). In this case, using the
definition of mercenary as an individual hired to support a foreign army (Dictionary.com),
disambiguates the confusion with private security forces as security contractors working for an
independent company offering military or security related services (Fulloon, p 29). Therefore, private
military forces of today are not true mercenaries, yet the action and purpose of deploying private
forces to bridge workforce and security gaps is relevant to historical times.
In the Post Cold War era, the private military and security forces of today are known as Private
Military Companies (PMC) and Private Security Companies (PSC), among other variants of similar
names. (For simplicity, I will refer to them as PSC or PSCs.) PSCs come in all shapes and sizes, from
large companies with over $12 billion in revenue employing over 600,000 people globally, to small
companies with a single focus area who support one contract in one country.
These legal, formal businesses deploy people all around the world to work in austere environments,
for example undeveloped, underdeveloped, war torn, or

Cultural Differences In Hawaii
In Hawaii, the state oversees all schools, and separates them by complex area. Data is usually
specified by specific school, complex, island, or the overall state. On the island of Hawaii, complex
areas differ, but between 52 percent and 88 percent of students are economically disadvantaged (State
of Hawaii Department of Education, 2014). For example, in the Pahoa complex that I currently work
in, 88 percent of students are economically disadvantaged (State of Hawaii Department of Education,
2014). Additionally, differing by complex, between 6 percent and 23 percent of the students are
English language learner (ELL) students (State of Hawaii Department of Education, 2014). Also,
according to the U.S. Department of Education (n.d.), in the 2012 2013 school year, there were
184,760 students in the state of Hawaii and of that 0.5 percent were American Indian and Alaskan
Native, 33 percent were Asian, 2.2 percent were Black, 8.3 percent were Hispanic, and 13.9 percent
were White. However, this data did not specify the Hawaiian or Pacific Island percentage of students
or those choosing more than one race. Based on U.S. census data, which closely matches student
ethnicity data, the Hawaiian and Pacific Islander alone population was 10 percent and the more than
one race was 23.1 percent in 2013 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). ... Show more content on

The Importance Of Community Newspaper Websites
This study provides further support that the journalists at community news outlets interact with their
audiences on many levels as part of the personal relationships they develop within the community, and
based on the expectation of the public (Lowrey, Brozana, Mackay, 2008; Reader, 2012a). While the
relationship does appear to continue online; the results of this study suggest, the locations where the
community newspaper website managers believe it is important to interact may not always correspond
with public wishes. Overall, the interactivity content analysis indicates that community newspaper
websites still operate using a low level of interaction supporting prior research by Chung and Nah

Both clarification and correction might help to inform citizens but would seem to do little to engage
them and encourage them to get involved (Lowrey, Brozana, Mackay, 2008). In fact, this type of
interaction would appear to support the traditional gatekeeping idea of the media as purveyors of truth
and expertise. However, there is some part of the audience that does seek to communicate with
experts, so it is possible that this type of interaction would increase participation (Wang, 2017).
It is difficult to criticize those in community media regarding how they chose to interact with the
public. It is a field with low staffing and tremendous workloads. Yet as Lowrey, Brozana, and Mackay
(2008) suggest the potential exists for journalists who fail to interact online to miss an opportunity to
foster an engaged audience. They also might relinquish their potential to guide the conversation
through the manipulation that networked gatekeepers can use (Barzilai Nahon, 2005). In addition,
Webizens offer a potential group of sources to journalists facing an increasingly high demand for
content. This dissertation supports previous research that shows journalists seeking to connect with an
online community must willingly interact with the public (Meyer Carey, 2014). There is a need for
journalists through their interactions

Analysis Of The Borden War Measures Act
The Borden War Measures Act The War Measures Act was introduced in 1914 as a way to give
unlimited authority to the government as a way to protect the populace during the First World War.
However the idea of protecting the populace did not come to be. Both civilians and the federal
government in some way acted against the civil rights of others using the War Measures Act. It
enabled war profiteering and the unfair treatment of those classified as Enemy Aliens . Abuse of the
War Measures Act by the Canadian government showed that the act itself was unnecessary
The War Measures Act goals were to give the Canadian government complete control over the
country. Primarily by bypassing elements of democracy that could harm the war effort. Such ... Show

The reason why such a poorly made weapon was made standard issue in the Canadian military was
because of Sam Hughes the Minister of Militia and Defence who drew serious criticism when he
defended it against growing evidence of its deficiencies in combat (8). But the War Measures Act was
also to blame since it enabled the government to control ...trading, exportation, importation,
production and manufacture; (9). Had the War Measures Act not been in place better quality products
for soldiers could have been produced. But it would also be ignorant to not acknowledge that industry
in Canada had grown because of the war. The war called for vast quantities of shells for artillery and
Canadian factories produced a large majority of shells. However at the start of production, Sam
Hughes, initially established a Shell Committee to coordinate production, but its failure to deliver on
contracts led to angry recriminations between Canada and Britain and widespread rumours of
corruption. (10). It was not until a new production company, the Imperial Munitions Board, was
established under toronto businessman Joseph Flavelle did production start to pick up. Since the board
was organized according to sound business practices and hired professional managers to oversee its
operations (11). This displays that under civilian control, production in factories would run smoother
than compared to the format of the government. While under control of the government,

Red Blood Cell Hypoxia
Hypoxia is a condition that is caused by the decrease in oxygen pressure, insufficient oxygen
transport, or when tissues are physiologically incapable of making use of the oxygen supplied to them.
Hypoxia occurs in the tissues and brain and cumulates to impaired cognitive functions. The ability to
maintain homeostasis and oxygen levels is an essential part of survival for all vertebrates. Various
physiological systems have evolved to assure every cell in an organism receives optimal oxygenation.
Hypoxia emerged as physiological structures used for oxygen delivery such as erythrocytes evolved.
Anoxia is the extreme type of hypoxia that manifests when the body is without oxygen leaving the
tissues and brain torpid. Hypoxia can manifest in five different forms: Pemic, Hypoxemic, ... Show

Extended exposure to hypoxic conditions can cause elevated RBC count; a condition called
Polycythemia. The elevation in the production of red blood cell is a consequence of renal failure that
affects the kidney. This results in the kidney producing a enythrogenin into the blood stream. This
produces erythropoietinogen; a plasma protein reaction which produces erythropoietin. This activates
the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. Hypoxia can seriously defect the brains respiratory
region. Any sort of loss of oxygen to any area of the brain can cause irreversible damage and lead to
unconsciousness. When there is a shortage of oxygen supply to the brains respiratory region, it causes
the integrating center to trigger an increase in the breathing rate of the organism. At any point, if an
organism is to become starved of oxygen, the brain cells undergo apoptosis. This paper will address
hypoxia, variations in hemoglobin of marine mammals vs. terrestrial mammals, bends and the
mechanisms used by diving marine mammals to avoid them and how these animals work to deal with

Children In Medieval Europe
CHILDREN IN MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN EUROPE
Play
Children in medieval Europe played they same way as children before them and the children that
came after continued to play as those before had. Pieter Bruegel the Elder s painting, Children s

hoops and sticks, girls are playing with dolls, children are dressing up and boys are engaging in

The Between Mind And Body
There is no real answer for the question about if mind and body are the same or different, a person is
made of mind and body and the both have different characteristics. Rene Descartes asked the question
what am I. he gives and answer to the question by saying he is a thinking thig, if the body and mind
are different from one other, mind can also continue with no body because it is not import for what he
is. Moreover body is breakable and extender and mind is not breakable and non extended, that is a
reason they are different in nature.
Rene Descartes settled the metaphysical differences between the body and mind, but he also have to
think about the relationship between mind and body. Mind and body are two different substances with
many properties. Moreover the mind and body communicate, its and everyday experience, the actions
that we do every day is from our thoughts. The relationship between the body and mind is much more
close and special, it cannot be regenerated with any other physical substances. When anywhere in the
body is wounded we feel pain and tries to not get injured again. Desires and thoughts have a
connection with how the body behaves but the mind is able to take control of the body
Descartes assumes that if it is possible to conceive of one thing without the other, then those two
things are not identical. The self is not a body, it s not a physical thing without a body. He also argues
that we can conceive of ourselves as existing. Thinking is

Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for mental
illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing on a brief
seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. During
the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental illnesses and was used
frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main illnesses ECT is used for is
depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania and some cases of
schizophrenia. Patients undergo ECT about three times a week, totaling six to twelve sessions. This is
an important topic to research because ECT is known to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If
ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered
unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses (Reisner,
2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients having existing
medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to the patient.
Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient know all of the
risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of brain damage is
reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is eligible for undergoing
ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post treatment risks and
confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as alternative options (Reisner,
2003). Because a risk of a treatment is not always certain, it should still be required to inform a patient
of the possible effects of the treatment they are undergoing, due to the minimal possibility that brain
damage or death could still

Macbeth Character Analysis
In the tragic play Macbeth , by William Shakespeare, a Scottish general named Macbeth was foretold
to become king by three witches. In order to secure his kismet, Macbeth commits numerous murders
and ultimately is driven by insanity and ambition. In the end, Macbeth is beheaded by Macduff,
however a question still lingers on. Was Macbeth a monster more inclined to evil than most human
beings, or a man who succumbs to temptation by his own expense to suffer the repercussions of his
own flaw? Throughout the play Macbeth was tempted, like Adam and Eve, with the promise of power
by a force of evil. Although he does give in to this desire, multiple forces pressured him into
committing the sinful crime. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth had no selfish thought nor lust for
self benefit until the trio of witches approached them with a promise of power. In the beginning of the
play, Macbeth was known by his fellow comrades to be a brave, powerful, and ambitious man. Often
regarded as brave Macbeth, well he deserved that name (Act 1: Sc 2). Like any other hero, Macbeth
was well known and praised for heroic deeds. Although he was highly spoken of, he like many tragic
heroes had a flaw. Macbeth was not virtuous. Although at first he was highly regarded and fulfilled his
duties as general for the [safety] toward [Duncan s] love and honor (Act 1: Sc 2), after the encounter
with the witches, was conflicted with sinful thoughts that had never occurred before. Similar to the

The women s treatment of the students affected their productivity in the form of a self fulfilling
prophecy; the women had very low expectations of the student s work performance (McShane Steen,
2008, p.76). This led them to bully the two for their own amusement, which in turn led to the
frustration of the students, and caused the boxes to be thrown at the wall.
As mentioned earlier, unnecessary conflict resulted in the wasting of resources, which is
counterproductive to any work environment. It slows down production capabilities, increases financial
expenses for damage goods, and increases safety risks. The students were being worked at a pace that
was too fast for their skill set. They tried to tell the women in control of the line speed that it was too
fast but the women responded with laughter and teasing. The communication on the production line
had barriers. The noise of the machines was too loud for the students to be able to communicate
between them, thus affecting their productivity. This led the students to seek alternative ways to slow
down the speed of the production line. The actions of the women caused the students to throw boxes
against the wall in order to stop the production line and catch up on their work while the bottles were
being cleaned from the floor. According to an article written by Kish Gephart et al., (2010) explains
why the students were compelled to throw the boxes at the wall. The

Contracts And Contracts Of Contracts
Introduction We enter into contracts every day. Taking a seat in the taxi amounts to entering into a
contract. You go to a bar to drink some beers, you have entered a contract though we might not realise
that we have entered into a contract. In the commercial world services and goods are normally
purchased for resale or consumption. Usually the buyer and the seller will negotiate the terms of the
purchase before they enter a transaction which will result in the sale. Trading involves financial risk
therefore it is in the interest of all to have recognizable set of rules by which each party agrees and
abides to. All business naturally deal with contracts, these contracts can either be unwritten or written.
A contract is a legally binding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To create a contractual relationship both parties must intend their agreement to have legal
consequences. Cases where parties of the agreement have not clearly expressed their intentions it will
be left to the courts to judge whether they intended to get into a contract. An agreement of a purely
social or domestic nature is not a contract. A good example is the Balfour v. Balfour (1919) case
whereby the husband agreed to pay ÂŁ30 to his wife every month while he was abroad. As he failed to
pay the promised amount, his wife sued him for the recovery of the amount. The court held that she
could not recover it because it was social agreement and the parties did not intend to create any legal
relations. Nonetheless, even in the case of agreements of purely social or domestic nature, there may
be intention of the parties to create legal obligations. In such cases the social agreement is intended to
have legal consequences which results in a contract. In commercial and business agreements the law
will presume that the parties entering into agreement intend those agreements to have legal
consequences. A contract may be oral or in writing. If a certain type of contract is required by law to
be in writing, it must comply with the necessary formalities as to writing, registration and attestation.
If these legal formalities are not

The Levels Of The Somerset Levels Flooded
During the Autumn/Winter of 2013/14, an unusually high frequency of depressions moved across the
Somerset Levels, causing both fluvial and pluvial flooding on a prodigious scale. The two main rivers
which flow through the Levels (River Tone/Parrett), burst their banks, spilling into the already heavily
saturated flood plain. An emergency was declared and subsequently allowed the Somerset council to
request financial and physical aid to the region. This essay highlights the key reasons the Somerset
Levels flooded, as well evaluating the main management solutions that were put forward during the
peak of the flooding. The Somerset levels expand 170,000 acres across parts of the north and centre of
the county (BBC News, 2014). The majority of the soil consists of clay and further inland, peat. As the
Levels sit, on average, just three metres above sea level, it s also prone to coastal flooding. Every year
the area experiences some form of flooding due to its impermeable calcareous clays, which drains
water very slowly (Soilscapes, n.d.). The Autumn/Winter period saw a record breaking Jet Stream,
fuelled by a diving cold Polar Vortex across the US. With this, brought powerful storms across the
UK, which produced rapid cyclogenesis in the mid Atlantic (MetOffice, 2014). This pattern lasted
several months, exacerbating the flooding issues across the Somerset Levels. Not only was the
flooding caused by natural circumstances, manmade ingenuity also played a significant role;

Rural Tourism And Urban Tourism
For some time, rural areas have seen a marked decrease in economic potential as a result of the
urbanization of most areas in the United States. Unlike many of the more populated areas, rural areas
are home to small communities that exist over a vast amount of land. Farmers, cattle herders and the
like often suffer from a lack of economic certainty whereas their profits hinge on the conditions
around them. It has become increasingly necessary to implement new methods of revitalizing the
economies of rural areas in order to create a more equally profitable nation. There are many historical
landmarks, key events and persons of interest all over the United States and that appeal only
appreciates over time. Many rural areas are beginning to capitalize on the industry that seems to bring
the most unbridle profit, tourism. Rural tourism is inclusive of many experiences that take place in a
rural setting from eco tourism to ethno tourism. There are many misconceptions that exist about the
benefits of rural tourism and the criticisms most often point towards the disruption of the existing
community. Yet the implementation of a successful rural tourism industry has proved beneficial

Social Justice Issue Of Suicide Prevention Essay
For this online assignment, I am going to be focusing on the social justice issue of suicide prevention.
This is a social justice issue because it affects the community as a whole, not just the person who is
experiencing suicidal ideation. Looking at the issue from the bigger picture can help to establish more
effective prevention methods.
Question #1 I would give myself a rating of 9 with how willing I am to allow the issue of suicide
prevention to be questioned and refuted by scientific evidence. Through my experience, which I will
talk about in the next question, most of the work that goes into organized suicide prevention efforts is
based off of research. With the combination of this knowledge, my personal experience working with
suicide prevention/crisis counseling, and my fierce passion for mental health and suicide prevention, I
would have no problem allowing the use of scientific evidence when looking at and/or refuting the
issue of suicide prevention.
Question #2 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
My knowledge of suicide prevention comes from what I have been taught or told, personal experience,
and research I have done for various classes. I am trained in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention
Skills Training), which I know was developed and backed by research. Most of what I have learned
about suicide prevention has been taught to me based on research not necessarily me spending time on
my own researching. I have researched several articles pertaining to suicide prevention, but most of
those have been for research papers I have been working on for classes. A few times, though, I have
looked up scientific evidence pertaining to suicide prevention on my own. I am not a big fan of the
research process, honestly, so taking time to do it recreationally is a huge deal for

Bscuits And Gravy Argumentative Essay
Coming from the South, Biscuits and Gravy have been my favorite breakfast meal ever since my baby

Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance Essay
Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance
Although the policies of Americanization and degradation of Puerto Rican culture heritage improved
by the United States in Puerto Rico during the early decades of the twentieth century, the utmost
concern for the United States was the strategic location of the island for political and economic
advantages, not of the people who inhabited it. Puerto Rico, though a poor colony, was a rich cultural
spot in an area of dynamic cultural influence of the Caribbean. One aspect of the Puerto Rican culture
that was greatly influenced by its location in the Caribbean and by its repossession by the United
States is music. Music permeated the daily life of Puerto Ricans (Waxer, Oct. 29). Music was the ...

Thus the bomba became known as talking drums (Glasser, 1995).
The plena, another typical form of Puerto Rican music, was considered the singing newspaper. It was
developed at the turn of the century by a lower class mulato population (made up of Puerto Rican
freed slaves and migrants from the English Antilles) on the coast. Themes for the music came from the
idiosyncrasies and normalcies of daily life, and was incorporated through a narrative verse taken from
the Spanish music culture through call and response . Call and response, another African influence, is
a component of traditional African musical expression in which a phrase is sung (chanted by part of a
group of people and that phrase is responded to by a refrain by the other part of the group. Call and
response is a component of the bomba, the plena, and the danza and still exists today as an important
ingredient of Puerto Rican music. It facilitates dialogue, and encourages a sense of community by
enabling more people to join in, which then closes the gaps between classes and races (Waxer, Oct.
29).
The third traditional form of Puerto Rican music is the danza. This genre, developed by mulato
artisans in late nineteenth century, reflected the race, class, and nationality issues which were present
at that time. As the plena and the bomba had African roots, the danza had roots in English, French, and

Timothy Leary defined a religious experience as the ecstatic, incontrovertibly certain, subjective
discovery of answers to seven basic spiritual questions. William James on the other hand describes
religious experience as the belief that it involves an altogether supernatural domain, somehow
inaccessible to science but accessible to the individual human subject. So Leary believes religious
experiences as sort of a way to answers life s questions whereas James sees it as a whole other realm
of consciousness that is different to each individual. When William James is talking about saintliness
he is talking about a group of spiritual emotions formed in a saintly character, or as he describes it The
collective name for the ripe fruits of religion in a character . Saintliness involves four distinct features.
The first of these features is a feeling of being in a wider life than that of the world s selfish little

this, for choosing the value of CTE for SiC, I used the room temperature values declared on Table 3 of
the 1997 publication by R.G. Munro, which is attached to this message. For room temperature the
value 1.1 and for 500°C the value 4.4 is given. I noticed that for all other experimental CTEs as well

elevated temperatures. Therefore, it makes sense to me to average these two values and use the

Connotation Of 12 Angry Men
When analyzing the film, 12 Angry Men, one will notice the reasoning is not consumed by the story,
but by the characters and their involvement and interaction. In a brief summary of the film, it contains
twelve jurors who are all participating in a trial. The trial is concerning a young adolescent who is
being appointed for the death of his father. Credit the power of this lucid study to the fact that the
attributes, failings, passions and prejudices of these tales men is as striking and important as the
awesome truth that they hold a boy s life in their hands (Weiler). Through out the story, $#$#3$#$# s
personalities and qualities are shown, each having their own opinion of the plea bargain. Identified in
detail through this analysis, one will be able to clearly depict the different characterization of the
jurors. Along with their individual personas, all of the juryman fall under the category of either being
Socratic or a sophist in Aristocratic terms. When looking at the arguments among the jurors one can
see the different logical styles utilized, and which were effect versus the not effective approaches.
Progressively through the movie, the argument grows and each juror becoming their own. When
criticizing and evaluating the content of 12 Angry Men, the real meaning behind the story becomes
apparent. The connotation of this film is studying the actions of the jurors and what each one brings

The Distance The Amino Acid Traveled From The Origin
The data that was collected throughout the experiment shows the distance the amino acid traveled
from the origin. This data was used to calculate the retardation factor also known as the Rf value; the
distance that the spot traveled divided by the distance the solvent traveled. Based off of our data, the
non polar amino acids show an upward linear trend in Rf as molecular weight increases. Conversely,
the more polar the amino acids are the greater the downward linear trend is seen, as shown in figure
1.3. Based off of the direction that the amino acids moved on the thin layer chromatography sheet we
can deduce that the hydrophobic molecules moved away from the solvent while the hydrophilic
molecules still moved but remained closer to the origin of the sheet. The Rf value can provide
evidence as to what the compound was. One way to fully authenticate the identity of a compound is to
run a TLC sheet side by side with the compound that you are trying to identify. You can identify a
substance if both compounds have the same Rf; they are likely identical substances. However, if their
Rf values differ they are not the same compounds. We were able to see this take place in our
experiment. As one can see from figure 1.3 D alanine and L alanine that have the same molecular
structure, but are just mirror images on of one another, both have the same Rf value.
Of course with any experiment there is room for error. One amino acid that our group noticed was that
glutamic acid did not

The vacant couch placed before the performance began could be distorted into chairs, short end tables,

Ancient Greek Instruments And Modern Day Instruments
Ancient Greek instruments had similar uses as modern day instruments, but there are some very
obvious differences. Ancient Greek instruments were used in more solo fashion, usually
accompanying a singer, chorus, or poet, whereas modern day instruments are typically used in
ensemble situations. There is more variety of instruments in modern day than in Ancient Greece due to
modern day advancements and production methods. Modern people are able to buy instruments from
many different markets and these instruments are mass produced on assembly lines or by specialists,
therefore the availability of instruments is higher in modern day than in Ancient times, where
everything was handmade and took longer. This is also due to the globalization of modern day
economies, where an individual can have access to basically any kind of instrument they desire,
whereas in ancient Greece where contact with other cultures was not as pronounced as it is today,
there were not as many instruments available to their use, only ones of their own design or of nearby
cultures. Ancient Greek instruments were not as complex as modern instruments are designed. Typical
instruments were created by adding holes that would be covered by the player s fingers, or they were
created as string instruments where one would simply pluck at the string to produce a noise. There
were some advancements of Greek instruments over time, such as with the aulos. In modern times,
though, because instruments have been able to

Comparing Augustine And Free Will
Paul saw sin as any act that violated God s law, whether that be by nature or literal and physical law. It
was evident that Paul believed that whoever sinned without out the law will perish without the law
(Romans 2:12). He also discusses that those without the law, such as Gentiles, would do law with
what is written in their hearts, their conscience testifying (Romans 2:15). To avoid sin, one can either
follow the law through the legal system, or you can understand the law through one s faith/relationship
with God; either path would hopefully allow someone to avoid sin as much as possible. While Paul
does believe that humans can minimize how much they sin, he does not believe that they escape it all
together. Paul believes that humans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adam and Eve s pride is what led them to sin, because the serpent had informed them that they could
become self sufficient and more knowledgeable. Their undue exaltation (Augustine XI.13), such as
their desire to become self sufficient and knowledgeable like God, allowed them to choose the
wrongly directed path that God has not intended, therefore resulting in the first sin. Lastly, Augustine
also explains how he believes that free will and the body are two distinct things. In fact, Augustine
describes lust (Augustine XI.16) as a type of wrongly directed will that is common among humans,
but explicitly states how this will takes possession of the whole body and moves the whole man
(Augustine XI.16) into bodily pleasures. It is important for Augustine to make this distinction about
the will, because he wants to show how humans still have the opportunity to choose a rightly directed
will, instead of always thinking and/or acting with a wrongly directed

Dreaming from Various Sources
The objective of this paper is to explore many articles covering the purpose of dreaming from various
sources. The articles, however, may vary from researcher to researcher. As such, this paper will also
detail the different theories about the usefulness of dreams. This paper will also take time to explain
what a dream is, when dreams happen, and what their potential purposes may be. To start this paper,
we first must understand what a dream is. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a dream is a
series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep . Dreams take the things we see during
our waking hours and translate them into unique, sometimes horrifying, and possibly meaningful
ways. Dreams could also be representations of subconscious feelings and desires, bubbling up from
deep within our psyche. However, the actual purpose of dreams remains a mystery, even to today s
foremost experts on this subject. Sigmund Freud attempted to understand what dreams meant; he
thought that dreams were safeguards attempt deeper and darker desires from the human mind s id.
Decades later, scientist John Allan Hobson theorized that dreams are a result of the brain attempting to
interpret random electrical impulses within the brain, producing often elaborate and vivid details and
plots while we sleep. Other research suggests that dreams are the brain s unique way of organizing
disparate information; a kind of nightly mental reformatting. The average Joe takes a

The Performance Of Premier League Football Teams
Is there any correlation between changing managers and football clubs results? Managers often find
themselves being sacked and replaced, sometimes only lasting a matter of days before having to move
on. In this essay I will be investigating the performance of Premier League football teams, both with a
change of manager and without, to see if there is evidence of a correlation between the changing
managers and the results of football clubs. A look at the data from the past three seasons shows that
Manchester City was consistently ranked in the top three on the league table. In earlier years though,
they were not as successful. For example, in 2009, they came 10th. Upon changing manager, in 2010
they climbed 5 places, making it to 2nd by 2013. Finally, when Manuel Pellegrini took over for the
2013/2014, they made it to 1st place. For this team, it can be assumed that a change in manager led to
better results. Another strong team according to data is Chelsea . In 2013, when Rafael Benitez was
manager, they finished in 3rd place. They then changed manager, to José Mourinho, finishing 2nd in
2014, and 1st in 2015. These teams show evidence that a change in manager was beneficial, as they
showed improvement when this occurred. Southampton also appears to prove correlation between a
change in management and the team s outcomes. In 2012, with Nigel Adkins, they placed 14th at the
end of the season. When Mauricio Pochettino came into control in 2013, they jumped up to 8th in

Over Thinking Leads To Indecision In William Shakespeare s...
When one is internally struggling between two choices they can easily become lost in their choice, or
rather no choice. Over thinking can lead to indecision, being costly to one s goals. In William
Shakespeare s 1601 play, Hamlet, Hamlet s indecisiveness on wanting to revenge his father s death is
consuming his sanity. Torn between his indecision leading him to inaction and revenge is where
Hamlet breaks and his sanity becomes consumed. Revenge was a cornerstone of life during the 1600
s, a source of pride and honor. If one s family member were killed then they would kill the murderer,
no extra thought or decision to make. This is true for many, including Prince Fortinbras and Laertes.
Hamlet did not want to fall short of this honor. First learning of the most unnatural murder of his
father he was covered in rage and a need for revenge. This rage wavered but came back after Hamlet s
envie of Prince Fortinbras s quick action, he declared my thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth.
This declaration is so pivotal as we see the effects of the internal battle that Hamlet has had to deal

Fighting Back By Harold Werner
Fighting Back It is well known that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and the images
of Jews being rounded up by the hundreds to be taken to concentration camps pervade what we know
about the Holocaust. One might assume then that there were few acts of resistance to this inevitable
fate. However, resistance took place within the ghettos throughout Europe as well as within the
concentration camps. In Poland, where anti Semitism was rampant, there were organized movements
of resistance which took place in the ghettos and in the forests outside of the cities. Thousands of Jews
came together in what were known as partisan groups to sabotage German military operations and
help other Jews to escape from the ghettos. Harold Werner was a member of one of these partisan
groups who wrote a memoir entitled Fighting Back: a Memoir of Jewish Resistance in WWII. He
decided to write this memoir in part as a response to his children s questions about why the Jews went
like sheep to the slaughter. It was important to Werner not just to answer his children s questioning but
to highlight for the world, both Jews and non Jews, the bravery displayed by the thousands of Jews
who fought for their own lives and for the lives of other Jews. Werner s memoir is important for this
generation and those that follow to help us understand that there were thousands of Jewish citizens

Smith And Carlos Death Threats
Based off information from a 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute, we learn that Smith and Carlos
were criticized and their families started receiving death threats. Smith and Carlos ended their
Olympic careers but they both played in the NFL for a short period of time. Smith became a coach and
is now a public speaker. Carlos stopped sports due to a bad knee injury which prevented him from
continuing. He hit hard times when his ex wife committed suicide and he went into a state of
depression. He became a school counselor in 2012. Norman raced a few more times but then called it
quits and when he passed away in 2006, Smith and Carlos were pallbearers at his funeral. (1968
Olympics) Two documentary films were produced about the 1969 protest ... Show more content on

Smith and Carlos showed how sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the betterment of society.
This protest also reminds us that if only the groups that want change make a stand, it will take a lot
longer for change to happen. Since Norman gave them the one glove idea and wore a patch supporting
human rights, he was the symbol for all others that need to help minority groups get justice. He was a
white Australian and risked his athletic career to help Smith and Carlos. We can t expect minority
groups to make all the sacrifices to make America to give all Americans equal rights. Protests need to
be a group effort by everyone if we want to make a difference. Even though the were hated at first,
there are sculptures and murals all around the world of this protest. People are starting to see the
impact that Smith and Carlos had on the world. They became an icon for social movements and
protests. Colin Kaepernick is the new Smith and Carlos. He noticed change needed to happen so he
risked his athletic career and image for the sake of is black brothers and sisters who are being treated

Pollution of the Marine Environment
As per Article 1(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea , 1982 (UNCLOS),
pollution of marine environment means the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances
or energy into the marine environment, including estuaries, which results or is likely to result in such a
deleterious effect as to harm living resources and marine life, hazardous to human health, hindrance to
marine activities, including fishing and other legitimate uses of the sea, impairment of quality for use
of seawater and reduction of amenities.
Marine pollution is a serious ocean water resource challenge that can affect human and animal food
resources. Unfortunately human activities are the largest contributor and cause of problems resulting
from the oceans being polluted. Furthermore, as the human population continues to grow and extend
the range of its activities, as well as increase its demands for marine goods and services, the world s
oceans and coasts will be increasingly stressed. In fact, growing coastal populations and overuse of
marine resources are the main source of the problem. The pollution linked with rising coastal
populations, availability of inadequate treatment infrastructure of sewage and other waste handling
facilities is putting at risk human health and

After scrutinizing the available information one is led to think otherwise. No amount of Spokane
River fish can be safely eaten. The fish themselves are not safe. Toxic and poisonous chemicals such
as mercury, arsenic, lead and PCB s (polychlorinated biphenyl) have been found in the tissues and
bones of all fish studied in the Spokane River. The fish s food sources and even the beach sand along
the riverbank have been found to contain harmful levels of these chemicals. Studies on the effects of
PCB s on human memory loss and learning disabilities have been conducted by four universities
around Lake Michigan over a 9 year period showing a direct link between PCB levels in adults and
their lower scores on learning tests. People who eat a certain amount of either commercially available
fish or sports fish have sometimes as high as four times in parts per million the amounts of mercury
and lead that the FDA would approve. The sources of these pollutants are industrial waste and some
naturally occurring elements. Mining in Idaho has historically been the prime factor in the declining
water quality of the Spokane River in Washington State and has been the focus of our national

How Did Ww1 Affect Australian Society
World War 1 was the first war that involved the majority of the world including Australia. It ran from
1914 to 1918 and was held in various places spread across Europe. Over 60,000 Australians lost their
lives which was over 1 percent of the population at this time. As you can imagine, this had a
tremendous impact on the home front. The war did contributed a variety of positive and negative
influences to the civilian population of Australia. The main aspects that received dramatic changes due
to World War 1 were the roles of women, political issues and the Australian economy. The War, did
not only effect men fighting, but also the roles of women on the home front. As most men on farms
and factories were taken by the Australian Imperial Force, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conscription is the idea of compulsory enlistment for a state service, typically into the armed forces.
The controversy between pro and anti conscription divided the Australian population during the course
of the war. Conscription was mainly supported by those who had never stepped foot near a battlefield.
Propaganda played a large role in pressuring men into enlisting. An example of where propaganda
pressured men into volunteering for the Australian Imperial Force, is Appendix 1. The motive of this
poster is successful as it implies that fathers would be shameful to ignore the plight of women as well
as, promoting a sense of guilt. Anti conscription propaganda also depicted or appealed to women. For
instance, anti conscriptionists would call a vote for conscription, a blood vote, reminding women they
were possibly sending men to their deaths. This strategy of manipulating people s emotions proved to
work as in Dec 1917, the 2nd referendum on conscription rejected it. This debate influenced the
entirety of Australian society as citizens were bombarded with propaganda and the opinions of others.
At the beginning of the war the Federal Government gained great jurisdiction through the War
Precautions Act. This was was introduced as commonwealth would need to increase its authority to
prosecute war effectively. Along with this, the Constitution was also

The Five Stages Of Grief
It s ironic that Elizabeth Kubler Ross theory, of the five stages of grief is present in the story Hamlet
by William Shakespeare after so many centuries later. Hamlet is believed to be the most dramatic play
in history, and comes with many personal conflicts that people still today will struggle with. In Hamlet
, the main character, Hamlet goes through the 5 stages of grief throughout the story. Elizabeth Kubler
Ross developed a theory based on how she believes to be the stages of acceptance of death. The 5
stages of grief and loss are: 1. Denial and isolation; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5.
Acceptance. People who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or
experience all of them. (Axelrod, 2016) Even though, Hamlet repeats some of these stages, and is
involved in multiple stages at the same time, he does in fact experience through all these stages.
Hamlet the Danish prince, son of Gertrude, grieve for the death of his father. The unexpected passing
of his father causes Hamlet to experience a roller coaster of emotions. The death of his father is not the
only thing he struggles with, but the marriage between his mother and uncle troubles him also. He
feels as if his mother has betrayed him, and did not give him the proper time to grief over the fatality
of his father. Claudius, Hamlet s uncle, not only replaced his father, but he also inherited the throne
that was supposed to be passed down to Hamlet. When Horatio and the

  • 3. Bringing Back The Big Guns Shelby Hornaday Block 1 Bringing Back the Big Guns A Star Wars: The Force Awakens Analysis It s true the Force, the Jedi, all of it. It s all true (Harrison Ford, The Force Awakens). The new Star Wars flick The Force Awakens burst onto the big screen with enormous critical and monetary success this past winter, and it seems that the franchise has truly been revived from the overall upsets of the prequels back to its epic roots in pop culture. But does the movie really hold up compared to the original trilogy? Indeed, the film shines through its engaging plot, important themes and flawless technique. The Force Awakens is very similar in plot to A New Hope, but there are plenty of interesting twists. The movie starts off on the desert planet of Jakku. Poe, a rebel fighter, is taken into custody by the big bad of the film Kylo Ren. However, Finn, one of the First Order s stormtroopers, helps him to escape Ren s ship and they crash land on Jakku. With Poe seemingly killed in the crash, Finn wanders into town and meets our main heroine, Rey, who is a scavenger fending for herself on Jakku. Rey has found a BB 8 droid belonging to Poe and the Rebel Alliance with a map piece leading to the missing Jedi Luke Skywalker. Finn lies to Rey about being a rebel fighter to escape Jakku with her. On their journey towards the Rebel Alliance, the two encounter friends and foes alike, and Rey ends up captured by Ren due to her awakened Force powers. With the help of the ... Introduction Private Security Companies (PSC) are companies that offer military and security services around the world in austere and undeveloped nations, as well as in developing and democratizing states. Made up of highly skilled individuals, PSCs have available to them an arsenal of unique and coveted capabilities their clients consider essential in their specific environment. From a dangerous armed combat mission to more fulfilling mission of supporting humanitarian aid, PSCs offer the ability for their clients to bridge gaps in military and security related activities around the globe. For all the good that they do, PSCs have had their issues over the years with rogue contractors and corrupt owners. Still, when considering the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... II. Literature Review Overview of Private Security Forces There is a clear consensus among researchers that private military forces have taken part in national and international conflicts for centuries, with the earliest instance of mercenary type forces reaching back to around 1500 BC (Bayley, p 15; Herbst, p 282 289; Phelps, p 830). In this case, using the definition of mercenary as an individual hired to support a foreign army (Dictionary.com), disambiguates the confusion with private security forces as security contractors working for an independent company offering military or security related services (Fulloon, p 29). Therefore, private military forces of today are not true mercenaries, yet the action and purpose of deploying private forces to bridge workforce and security gaps is relevant to historical times. In the Post Cold War era, the private military and security forces of today are known as Private Military Companies (PMC) and Private Security Companies (PSC), among other variants of similar names. (For simplicity, I will refer to them as PSC or PSCs.) PSCs come in all shapes and sizes, from large companies with over $12 billion in revenue employing over 600,000 people globally, to small companies with a single focus area who support one contract in one country. These legal, formal businesses deploy people all around the world to work in austere environments, for example undeveloped, underdeveloped, war torn, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Data is usually specified by specific school, complex, island, or the overall state. On the island of Hawaii, complex areas differ, but between 52 percent and 88 percent of students are economically disadvantaged (State of Hawaii Department of Education, 2014). For example, in the Pahoa complex that I currently work in, 88 percent of students are economically disadvantaged (State of Hawaii Department of Education, 2014). Additionally, differing by complex, between 6 percent and 23 percent of the students are English language learner (ELL) students (State of Hawaii Department of Education, 2014). Also, according to the U.S. Department of Education (n.d.), in the 2012 2013 school year, there were 184,760 students in the state of Hawaii and of that 0.5 percent were American Indian and Alaskan Native, 33 percent were Asian, 2.2 percent were Black, 8.3 percent were Hispanic, and 13.9 percent were White. However, this data did not specify the Hawaiian or Pacific Island percentage of students or those choosing more than one race. Based on U.S. census data, which closely matches student ethnicity data, the Hawaiian and Pacific Islander alone population was 10 percent and the more than one race was 23.1 percent in 2013 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2015). ... • 6. The Importance Of Community Newspaper Websites This study provides further support that the journalists at community news outlets interact with their audiences on many levels as part of the personal relationships they develop within the community, and based on the expectation of the public (Lowrey, Brozana, Mackay, 2008; Reader, 2012a). While the relationship does appear to continue online; the results of this study suggest, the locations where the community newspaper website managers believe it is important to interact may not always correspond with public wishes. Overall, the interactivity content analysis indicates that community newspaper websites still operate using a low level of interaction supporting prior research by Chung and Nah (2009) and Larsson (2011). However, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both clarification and correction might help to inform citizens but would seem to do little to engage them and encourage them to get involved (Lowrey, Brozana, Mackay, 2008). In fact, this type of interaction would appear to support the traditional gatekeeping idea of the media as purveyors of truth and expertise. However, there is some part of the audience that does seek to communicate with experts, so it is possible that this type of interaction would increase participation (Wang, 2017). It is difficult to criticize those in community media regarding how they chose to interact with the public. It is a field with low staffing and tremendous workloads. Yet as Lowrey, Brozana, and Mackay (2008) suggest the potential exists for journalists who fail to interact online to miss an opportunity to foster an engaged audience. They also might relinquish their potential to guide the conversation through the manipulation that networked gatekeepers can use (Barzilai Nahon, 2005). In addition, Webizens offer a potential group of sources to journalists facing an increasingly high demand for content. This dissertation supports previous research that shows journalists seeking to connect with an online community must willingly interact with the public (Meyer Carey, 2014). • 7. Analysis Of The Borden War Measures Act The Borden War Measures Act The War Measures Act was introduced in 1914 as a way to give unlimited authority to the government as a way to protect the populace during the First World War. However the idea of protecting the populace did not come to be. Both civilians and the federal government in some way acted against the civil rights of others using the War Measures Act. It enabled war profiteering and the unfair treatment of those classified as Enemy Aliens . The reason why such a poorly made weapon was made standard issue in the Canadian military was because of Sam Hughes the Minister of Militia and Defence who drew serious criticism when he defended it against growing evidence of its deficiencies in combat (8). Had the War Measures Act not been in place better quality products for soldiers could have been produced. But it would also be ignorant to not acknowledge that industry in Canada had grown because of the war. The war called for vast quantities of shells for artillery and Canadian factories produced a large majority of shells. However at the start of production, Sam Hughes, initially established a Shell Committee to coordinate production, but its failure to deliver on contracts led to angry recriminations between Canada and Britain and widespread rumours of corruption. (10). It was not until a new production company, the Imperial Munitions Board, was established under toronto businessman Joseph Flavelle did production start to pick up. Since the board was organized according to sound business practices and hired professional managers to oversee its operations (11). This displays that under civilian control, production in factories would run smoother than compared to the format of the government. While under control of the government, ... Red Blood Cell Hypoxia Hypoxia is a condition that is caused by the decrease in oxygen pressure, insufficient oxygen transport, or when tissues are physiologically incapable of making use of the oxygen supplied to them. Hypoxia occurs in the tissues and brain and cumulates to impaired cognitive functions. The ability to maintain homeostasis and oxygen levels is an essential part of survival for all vertebrates. Various physiological systems have evolved to assure every cell in an organism receives optimal oxygenation. Hypoxia emerged as physiological structures used for oxygen delivery such as erythrocytes evolved. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Extended exposure to hypoxic conditions can cause elevated RBC count; a condition called Polycythemia. The elevation in the production of red blood cell is a consequence of renal failure that affects the kidney. This results in the kidney producing a enythrogenin into the blood stream. Hypoxia can seriously defect the brains respiratory region. Any sort of loss of oxygen to any area of the brain can cause irreversible damage and lead to unconsciousness. When there is a shortage of oxygen supply to the brains respiratory region, it causes the integrating center to trigger an increase in the breathing rate of the organism. At any point, if an organism is to become starved of oxygen, the brain cells undergo apoptosis. The Between Mind And Body There is no real answer for the question about if mind and body are the same or different, a person is made of mind and body and the both have different characteristics. Rene Descartes asked the question what am I. he gives and answer to the question by saying he is a thinking thig, if the body and mind are different from one other, mind can also continue with no body because it is not import for what he is. Moreover body is breakable and extender and mind is not breakable and non extended, that is a reason they are different in nature. Rene Descartes settled the metaphysical differences between the body and mind, but he also have to think about the relationship between mind and body. Mind and body are two different substances with many properties. Moreover the mind and body communicate, its and everyday experience, the actions that we do every day is from our thoughts. The relationship between the body and mind is much more close and special, it cannot be regenerated with any other physical substances. When anywhere in the body is wounded we feel pain and tries to not get injured again. Desires and thoughts have a connection with how the body behaves but the mind is able to take control of the body Descartes assumes that if it is possible to conceive of one thing without the other, then those two things are not identical. The self is not a body, it s not a physical thing without a body. He also argues that we can conceive of ourselves as existing. Thinking is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Electroconvulsive Therapy Argumentative Essay Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as electroshock therapy, is a treatment for mental illnesses that runs small electric currents through the brain, with the intention of bringing on a brief seizure. The goal is to change brain chemistry to reverse symptoms of certain mental illnesses. During the 1940s 50s, ECT was the most effective way of treating certain mental illnesses and was used frequently throughout many countries (Kendell, 1982). One of the main illnesses ECT is used for is depression, but it is also used for other mental illnesses, such as mania and some cases of schizophrenia. Although ECT is shown to be effective, it does not always mean that is a safe form of treatment. If ECT causes patients to have severe brain damage and cognitive deficits, it would be considered unethical to use, regardless if it an effective form of treatment for certain mental illnesses (Reisner, 2003). There are limitations to ECT that doctors need to be aware of, such as patients having existing medical conditions that could counteract with ECT treatment and cause damage to the patient. Informed consent is an important process in undergoing ECT, it should let the patient know all of the risks and all of the benefits of ECT. Many have suggested that although the risk of brain damage is reported to be low, it is still an important deciding factor for a patient who is eligible for undergoing ECT. Informed consent should include risks, benefits, acknowledge post treatment risks and confusion, the possibility or uncertain effects of the treatment, as well as alternative options (Reisner, 2003). In order to secure his kismet, Macbeth commits numerous murders and ultimately is driven by insanity and ambition. In the end, Macbeth is beheaded by Macduff, however a question still lingers on. Was Macbeth a monster more inclined to evil than most human beings, or a man who succumbs to temptation by his own expense to suffer the repercussions of his own flaw? Throughout the play Macbeth was tempted, like Adam and Eve, with the promise of power by a force of evil. Although he does give in to this desire, multiple forces pressured him into committing the sinful crime. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth had no selfish thought nor lust for self benefit until the trio of witches approached them with a promise of power. As mentioned earlier, unnecessary conflict resulted in the wasting of resources, which is counterproductive to any work environment. To create a contractual relationship both parties must intend their agreement to have legal consequences. Cases where parties of the agreement have not clearly expressed their intentions it will be left to the courts to judge whether they intended to get into a contract. An agreement of a purely social or domestic nature is not a contract. A good example is the Balfour v. Balfour (1919) case whereby the husband agreed to pay £30 to his wife every month while he was abroad. As he failed to pay the promised amount, his wife sued him for the recovery of the amount. The court held that she could not recover it because it was social agreement and the parties did not intend to create any legal relations. Nonetheless, even in the case of agreements of purely social or domestic nature, there may be intention of the parties to create legal obligations. In such cases the social agreement is intended to have legal consequences which results in a contract. In commercial and business agreements the law will presume that the parties entering into agreement intend those agreements to have legal consequences. A contract may be oral or in writing. The Levels Of The Somerset Levels Flooded During the Autumn/Winter of 2013/14, an unusually high frequency of depressions moved across the Somerset Levels, causing both fluvial and pluvial flooding on a prodigious scale. The two main rivers which flow through the Levels (River Tone/Parrett), burst their banks, spilling into the already heavily saturated flood plain. An emergency was declared and subsequently allowed the Somerset council to request financial and physical aid to the region. This essay highlights the key reasons the Somerset Levels flooded, as well evaluating the main management solutions that were put forward during the peak of the flooding. The Somerset levels expand 170,000 acres across parts of the north and centre of the county (BBC News, 2014). The majority of the soil consists of clay and further inland, peat. As the Levels sit, on average, just three metres above sea level, it s also prone to coastal flooding. Every year the area experiences some form of flooding due to its impermeable calcareous clays, which drains water very slowly (Soilscapes, n.d.). Unlike many of the more populated areas, rural areas are home to small communities that exist over a vast amount of land. Farmers, cattle herders and the like often suffer from a lack of economic certainty whereas their profits hinge on the conditions around them. It has become increasingly necessary to implement new methods of revitalizing the economies of rural areas in order to create a more equally profitable nation. There are many historical landmarks, key events and persons of interest all over the United States and that appeal only appreciates over time. Many rural areas are beginning to capitalize on the industry that seems to bring the most unbridle profit, tourism. Rural tourism is inclusive of many experiences that take place in a rural setting from eco tourism to ethno tourism. There are many misconceptions that exist about the benefits of rural tourism and the criticisms most often point towards the disruption of the existing community. Yet the implementation of a successful rural tourism industry has proved beneficial according to several studies conducted in the U.S. For instance, according to the Economic Research Service Rural tourism and recreational development results in lower local poverty rates and improvements in other social conditions, such as local educational attainment and health (measured by mortality ... This is a social justice issue because it affects the community as a whole, not just the person who is experiencing suicidal ideation. Looking at the issue from the bigger picture can help to establish more effective prevention methods. Question #1 I would give myself a rating of 9 with how willing I am to allow the issue of suicide prevention to be questioned and refuted by scientific evidence. Through my experience, which I will talk about in the next question, most of the work that goes into organized suicide prevention efforts is based off of research. With the combination of this knowledge, my personal experience working with suicide prevention/crisis counseling, and my fierce passion for mental health and suicide prevention, I would have no problem allowing the use of scientific evidence when looking at and/or refuting the issue of suicide prevention. Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance Essay Puerto Rican Music and Its Significance Although the policies of Americanization and degradation of Puerto Rican culture heritage improved by the United States in Puerto Rico during the early decades of the twentieth century, the utmost concern for the United States was the strategic location of the island for political and economic advantages, not of the people who inhabited it. Puerto Rico, though a poor colony, was a rich cultural spot in an area of dynamic cultural influence of the Caribbean. The plena, another typical form of Puerto Rican music, was considered the singing newspaper. It was developed at the turn of the century by a lower class mulato population (made up of Puerto Rican freed slaves and migrants from the English Antilles) on the coast. Themes for the music came from the idiosyncrasies and normalcies of daily life, and was incorporated through a narrative verse taken from the Spanish music culture through call and response . Call and response, another African influence, is a component of traditional African musical expression in which a phrase is sung (chanted by part of a group of people and that phrase is responded to by a refrain by the other part of the group. Call and response is a component of the bomba, the plena, and the danza and still exists today as an important ingredient of Puerto Rican music. It facilitates dialogue, and encourages a sense of community by enabling more people to join in, which then closes the gaps between classes and races (Waxer, Oct. 29). The third traditional form of Puerto Rican music is the danza. This genre, developed by mulato artisans in late nineteenth century, reflected the race, class, and nationality issues which were present at that time. This data was used to calculate the retardation factor also known as the Rf value; the distance that the spot traveled divided by the distance the solvent traveled. Based off of our data, the non polar amino acids show an upward linear trend in Rf as molecular weight increases. Conversely, the more polar the amino acids are the greater the downward linear trend is seen, as shown in figure 1.3. Based off of the direction that the amino acids moved on the thin layer chromatography sheet we can deduce that the hydrophobic molecules moved away from the solvent while the hydrophilic molecules still moved but remained closer to the origin of the sheet. The Rf value can provide evidence as to what the compound was. One way to fully authenticate the identity of a compound is to run a TLC sheet side by side with the compound that you are trying to identify. You can identify a substance if both compounds have the same Rf; they are likely identical substances. However, if their Rf values differ they are not the same compounds. We were able to see this take place in our experiment. As one can see from figure 1.3 D alanine and L alanine that have the same molecular structure, but are just mirror images on of one another, both have the same Rf value. Ancient Greek instruments were used in more solo fashion, usually accompanying a singer, chorus, or poet, whereas modern day instruments are typically used in ensemble situations. There is more variety of instruments in modern day than in Ancient Greece due to modern day advancements and production methods. Modern people are able to buy instruments from many different markets and these instruments are mass produced on assembly lines or by specialists, therefore the availability of instruments is higher in modern day than in Ancient times, where everything was handmade and took longer. This is also due to the globalization of modern day economies, where an individual can have access to basically any kind of instrument they desire, whereas in ancient Greece where contact with other cultures was not as pronounced as it is today, there were not as many instruments available to their use, only ones of their own design or of nearby cultures. Ancient Greek instruments were not as complex as modern instruments are designed. Typical instruments were created by adding holes that would be covered by the player s fingers, or they were created as string instruments where one would simply pluck at the string to produce a noise. He also discusses that those without the law, such as Gentiles, would do law with what is written in their hearts, their conscience testifying (Romans 2:15). To avoid sin, one can either follow the law through the legal system, or you can understand the law through one s faith/relationship with God; either path would hopefully allow someone to avoid sin as much as possible. In fact, Augustine describes lust (Augustine XI.16) as a type of wrongly directed will that is common among humans, but explicitly states how this will takes possession of the whole body and moves the whole man (Augustine XI.16) into bodily pleasures. This paper will also take time to explain what a dream is, when dreams happen, and what their potential purposes may be. To start this paper, we first must understand what a dream is. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, a dream is a series of thoughts, images, or emotions occurring during sleep . Dreams take the things we see during our waking hours and translate them into unique, sometimes horrifying, and possibly meaningful ways. Dreams could also be representations of subconscious feelings and desires, bubbling up from deep within our psyche. However, the actual purpose of dreams remains a mystery, even to today s foremost experts on this subject. Sigmund Freud attempted to understand what dreams meant; he thought that dreams were safeguards attempt deeper and darker desires from the human mind s id. Decades later, scientist John Allan Hobson theorized that dreams are a result of the brain attempting to interpret random electrical impulses within the brain, producing often elaborate and vivid details and plots while we sleep. In this essay I will be investigating the performance of Premier League football teams, both with a change of manager and without, to see if there is evidence of a correlation between the changing managers and the results of football clubs. A look at the data from the past three seasons shows that Manchester City was consistently ranked in the top three on the league table. In earlier years though, they were not as successful. For example, in 2009, they came 10th. Upon changing manager, in 2010 they climbed 5 places, making it to 2nd by 2013. Finally, when Manuel Pellegrini took over for the 2013/2014, they made it to 1st place. For this team, it can be assumed that a change in manager led to better results. Another strong team according to data is Chelsea . In 2013, when Rafael Benitez was manager, they finished in 3rd place. They then changed manager, to José Mourinho, finishing 2nd in 2014, and 1st in 2015. These teams show evidence that a change in manager was beneficial, as they showed improvement when this occurred. Southampton also appears to prove correlation between a change in management and the team s outcomes. In 2012, with Nigel Adkins, they placed 14th at the end of the season. Fighting Back By Harold Werner Fighting Back It is well known that six million Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and the images of Jews being rounded up by the hundreds to be taken to concentration camps pervade what we know about the Holocaust. One might assume then that there were few acts of resistance to this inevitable fate. However, resistance took place within the ghettos throughout Europe as well as within the concentration camps. In Poland, where anti Semitism was rampant, there were organized movements of resistance which took place in the ghettos and in the forests outside of the cities. Thousands of Jews came together in what were known as partisan groups to sabotage German military operations and help other Jews to escape from the ghettos. Harold Werner was a member of one of these partisan groups who wrote a memoir entitled Fighting Back: a Memoir of Jewish Resistance in WWII. He decided to write this memoir in part as a response to his children s questions about why the Jews went like sheep to the slaughter. It was important to Werner not just to answer his children s questioning but to highlight for the world, both Jews and non Jews, the bravery displayed by the thousands of Jews who fought for their own lives and for the lives of other Jews. Werner s memoir is important for this generation and those that follow to help us understand that there were thousands of Jewish citizens who fought against the cruelty of the Nazis. Smith and Carlos showed how sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the betterment of society. This protest also reminds us that if only the groups that want change make a stand, it will take a lot longer for change to happen. Since Norman gave them the one glove idea and wore a patch supporting human rights, he was the symbol for all others that need to help minority groups get justice. He was a white Australian and risked his athletic career to help Smith and Carlos. We can t expect minority groups to make all the sacrifices to make America to give all Americans equal rights. Pollution of the Marine Environment As per Article 1(4) of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea , 1982 (UNCLOS), pollution of marine environment means the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the marine environment, including estuaries, which results or is likely to result in such a deleterious effect as to harm living resources and marine life, hazardous to human health, hindrance to marine activities, including fishing and other legitimate uses of the sea, impairment of quality for use of seawater and reduction of amenities. Marine pollution is a serious ocean water resource challenge that can affect human and animal food resources. Unfortunately human activities are the largest contributor and cause of problems resulting from the oceans being polluted. Furthermore, as the human population continues to grow and extend the range of its activities, as well as increase its demands for marine goods and services, the world s oceans and coasts will be increasingly stressed. In fact, growing coastal populations and overuse of marine resources are the main source of the problem. Toxic and poisonous chemicals such as mercury, arsenic, lead and PCB s (polychlorinated biphenyl) have been found in the tissues and bones of all fish studied in the Spokane River. The fish s food sources and even the beach sand along the riverbank have been found to contain harmful levels of these chemicals. Studies on the effects of PCB s on human memory loss and learning disabilities have been conducted by four universities around Lake Michigan over a 9 year period showing a direct link between PCB levels in adults and their lower scores on learning tests. People who eat a certain amount of either commercially available fish or sports fish have sometimes as high as four times in parts per million the amounts of mercury and lead that the FDA would approve. The sources of these pollutants are industrial waste and some naturally occurring elements. The controversy between pro and anti conscription divided the Australian population during the course of the war. Conscription was mainly supported by those who had never stepped foot near a battlefield. Propaganda played a large role in pressuring men into enlisting. An example of where propaganda pressured men into volunteering for the Australian Imperial Force, is Appendix 1. The motive of this poster is successful as it implies that fathers would be shameful to ignore the plight of women as well as, promoting a sense of guilt. Anti conscription propaganda also depicted or appealed to women. For instance, anti conscriptionists would call a vote for conscription, a blood vote, reminding women they were possibly sending men to their deaths. This strategy of manipulating people s emotions proved to work as in Dec 1917, the 2nd referendum on conscription rejected it. This debate influenced the entirety of Australian society as citizens were bombarded with propaganda and the opinions of others. At the beginning of the war the Federal Government gained great jurisdiction through the War Precautions Act. This was was introduced as commonwealth would need to increase its authority to prosecute war effectively. Along with this, the Constitution was also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Five Stages Of Grief It s ironic that Elizabeth Kubler Ross theory, of the five stages of grief is present in the story Hamlet by William Shakespeare after so many centuries later. Hamlet is believed to be the most dramatic play in history, and comes with many personal conflicts that people still today will struggle with. In Hamlet , the main character, Hamlet goes through the 5 stages of grief throughout the story. Elizabeth Kubler Ross developed a theory based on how she believes to be the stages of acceptance of death. The 5 stages of grief and loss are: 1. Denial and isolation; 2. Anger; 3. Bargaining; 4. Depression; 5. Acceptance. People who are grieving do not necessarily go through the stages in the same order or experience all of them. (Axelrod, 2016) Even though, Hamlet repeats some of these stages, and is involved in multiple stages at the same time, he does in fact experience through all these stages. Hamlet the Danish prince, son of Gertrude, grieve for the death of his father. The unexpected passing of his father causes Hamlet to experience a roller coaster of emotions. The death of his father is not the only thing he struggles with, but the marriage between his mother and uncle troubles him also. He feels as if his mother has betrayed him, and did not give him the proper time to grief over the fatality of his father. Claudius, Hamlet s uncle, not only replaced his father, but he also inherited the throne that was supposed to be passed down to Hamlet. When Horatio and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
