A couple of weeks ago I was introduced to a character at a gas station whom I only thought lived
between the pages of a graphic novel. However, before this diatribe about masculinity takes a turn
for the depressed and uninspired, there is an important detail I left out of my first story. Before I
reveal it to you, let's go back to what he was doing before he arrived awkwardly lost at the gas
station.
The night before had brought a starless night with rain, but daybreak cracked through on a

Ernest Hemingway incorporates into his literature is much more simplistic, providing the reader
with concise details, allowing them to understand the text. For example, when Santiago was at sea,
he caught a fish and "he had cut six strips [and] he spread them out on the wood of the bow,
wipedhis knife on his trousers, and lifted the carcass of the bonito by the tail and dropped it
overboard" (58 Hemingway). Rather than packing the passage chalk full of adjectives and
descriptions, Hemingway presents the reader with just enough information for an atmosphere to be
created from the text. This enables the reader to experience the smell of the freshly carved and
