1. Evaluation 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Front Cover
• This sticks to usual
magazine conventions
as I have a main cover
model making direct
eye contact with the
potential buyers along
side main cover lines
and a brief description
about the articles
which would further
entice the readers.
3. Contents Page Layout
• My magazine has stuck the typical
conventions of contents page with
the more key articles being
highlighted through imagery and
bigger fonts.
• This is generic as to change the
conventions could be hard as
there are so many different
varieties of contents pages already
in the market.
• I have also used subheadings in
order to break up the
text, focusing on each aspect of
the magazine content which is
typically what is done by most
magazines. This also makes the
magazine more organised.
4. Double Page Spread Content
• My magazine conforms to the usual
features of a double spread page with a
mixture of text and imagery. From my
research, it was clear that my magazine
should have slightly more text than
imagery. I have used eye catching images
and fonts as well as pull quotes which is
used in most magazine articles.
• I have also used a interview format as it
breaks up the article, making it less
chunky and an easier read since I am
targeting youths.
• This also follows conventions as I have
used columns to separate texts which is
used by most media publishing articles.
• The font size has also been carefully
thought out, with the name being the
biggest, followed by the pull quotes and
finally the article content. This is where
the eye catches first and so much grab the
attention.
5. Masthead
• I have chosen a clear, clean cut masthead which is
generic and similar to most music magazines as it is
positioned at the top of the magazine. This is of
paramount importance as it also allows potential buyers
to identify with the magazine genre instantly.
• I have chosen the name ‘Volume’ as it has connotations
of being loud. Since my magazine is of mainstream
music, the music would usually be loud and in your face.
6. Skyline
• I have chosen to use various celebrities as a skyline and
they are of different music genres which will attract a
wide range of audience as in the news stands which is
the first thing that potential buyers will see.
• Sticking to my target age group, the artists are of
interest to my potential readers.
7. Cover Lines
• I have chosen to use
cover lines which would
grab attention quickly and
therefore chosen
celebrities to be the focus
• However, not shying away
from the fact that this is a
music magazine with the
cover line on the right
hand side away from all
the ‘gossip’ on the left.
8. Imagery
• The images used are strong
and quickly grabs attention
as the mode of address has
the model making direct eye
contact with the readers.
• The simplicity of the outfits
allow the focus to be on the
models facial expression.
• Since I have not used any
instruments in this
magazine, it further sticks to
the idea that my magazine is
mainstream, focusing on the
fact that the importance is
of the image portrayed by
the artists themselves. This
is also further shown in the
fact that the artists are
posing and in a potential
studio. They are not candid
shots.
9. Page Numbers
• I have chosen to feature
both the issue number
and magazine name as
part of my page numbers
as it is not a popular way
of showing page numbers
amongst most magazines
which would make my
magazine unique and
also appear more
sophisticated.
10. “Subscribe”
• Like most magazines, a
“Subscribe” feature is
common and usually
placed on the bottom
right, at the end of the
contents page.
• With a cheaper price if they
subscribe, this will be an
incentive to new readers.
This would also allow my
magazine to develop a loyal
customer base, therefore
increasing the brand.
11. Pull Quotes
• By using pull
quotes, the readers
attention would be
diverted to the
important features of
the article
content, instantly
grabbing the attention
and therefore making
want them to read on.
