Evaluation part 1 - ways in which i used conventions
1. In what ways does my media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
music magazines?
2. When deconstructing front covers, double page spreads and contents pages of pop
magazines, I have identified a range of conventions that are used repeatedly.
Front covers
•Kept a slogan at the top to make it stand out against competitors.
•Id keep the brand name the same design so it is recognisable.
•Included cover lines to advertise the magazine.
• Barcode with issue number which is placed according to where they were placed
when i look at other pop music magazines.
• Celebrity as central image so you have a clear understanding of the main focus of the
magazine. The person in the picture is also making eye-contact with the audience,
therefore building a rapport instantly.
•Generic colours used so that it is recognisable and grab readers attention.
•A variety of fonts and different font sizes to help grab the readers attention.
•Strap line at bottom to also advertise the magazine and make it stand out against
competitors.
•The featurue article stands out over the other cover lines, also to have a clear
understanding of the main focus of the magazine.
3. Double Page Spread
• I pulled out an interesting quite and enlarged it, this grabs the audiences
attentions and makes it look interesting.
• Used rule of thirds.
• Continued the generic colour scheme.
Contents
• Copy of the magazine for a visual and clearer. This is especially easier for young
readers to follow.
• Small love heart shapes and girly writing appeals to a young female audience as it
is very girly which also fits with the stereotypes of pop music.
4. I chose not to challenge any conventions of pop magazines as I decided
it would not fit with the genre and would not suit a weekly, recognisable
magazine. A deviation from the conventions would likely cause my
magazine to lose readers and not be as popular.
