Total Rehabilitation Centre For Disabled Children
BACKGROUND Total Rehabilitation centre for disabled children was started in the year 2010.The
home is located in Kasarani, Nairobi County, approximately 16kms from CBD. The home was
founded by Teresiah who was initially running a door to door programme raising awareness in the
community in regards to caring for disabled children. She is on the frontline within her community in
advocating for equality of the disabled in society especially the children. Teresa rented out the house
which is now total rehab centre and got a team to assist her in caring for the diabled children. The
house is a masionette built on half an acre of land; it has 3 bedrooms, a shower and Toilet, A kitchen
and a living area. The home is housing a total of 38 children. The home caters to children with
autism, cerebral palsy and Down's syndrome. A few of the children are rescued from their homes
where they were not receiving adequate care. These children got a new lease of life at Total
Rehab,an environment in which they receive proper care. A few members of the society hide their
disabled children due to embarrassment and in the process the child/children are often neglected.
Some of the kids are brought in by their parents, due to the nature of their work or financial
constraints they are not able to give the child the proper care they deserving this case however the
parents pay a small fee for the care of their children while at the centre. There are orphaned kids in
the home as well. Teresa and her

Down Syndrome: An Informative Essay
Down Syndrome: An Informative Essay
Down Syndrome is the name for babies born with a disorder related to their chromosomes. It is
caused when meiosis occurs and an error occurs in the cells development. The reason for this defect
is often because the parent is over 40 or for some other reason their meiosis is not "Up to par."
The actual defect is an extra chromosome is developed during cell development. The abnormal
development results in 47 chromosomes rather than the usual 46 (23 from each parent).
This extra gene causes problems in the child's physical and mental development.
There are an estimated 5000 babies with Down Syndrome born in America every single year. While
the chances of having a Down Syndrome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these are: larger or almond shaped eyes (sometimes
Brushfield spots on the irises), smaller than normal features, such as smaller ears or a smaller nose,
short stubby fingers, a single palmar crease on their hands, and having exceptional social
intelligence.
Because Down Syndrome is cause by a cell abnormality during meiosis, it can not really be proven
that Down Syndrome is hereditary. A perfectly healthy mother could have a Down Syndrome baby
even though there was never any sign of the disorder in her pedigree. There are however, three
different kinds of Down
Syndrome. 95% of Down Syndrome babies have Trisomy 21. This is the presence of extra genetic
material on the 21st pair of chromosomes. Around 4% have what is called Translocation. This is
where the extra chromosome 21 decided to break away and attach itself to another chromosome.
The last 1% is made up of those with Mosaicism. This is where some cells have Trisomy 21 while
others do not.
There is no cure for Down Syndrome. There is also not way to prevent it.
Once faced with the fact you have a Down Syndrome baby however, the baby will need various
kinds of checks and treatment to help it live. Down Syndrome babies have a very high rate of
congenital heart defects. In fact 30% to 50% have these defects. An endocardiogram is a way to
check babies for any signs of defect and start the child on treatment. Down Syndrome babies also
require more effort

Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Essay
Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision
Integrating children with handicaps into regular classrooms (also known as mainstreaming) has been
a huge issue in education systems recently. The goal of mainstreaming is providing the most
appropriate and beneficial education to a child in the least restrictive setting and so the question of
where the children with handicaps benefit the most is the question that is the hardest to answer. In
the 1960's there was no question. No one even thought about taking a child with a handicap out of
special education and placing them within a regular classroom. But now, partly because of parent's
requests, select school districts are mainstreaming. The debate over mainstreaming being good ...

In special education, the teachers focus on teaching the skills that the children will need to survive
so they can increase the chance that these children will be able to live independently. They focus on
dressing and personal hygiene, as well as teaching them basic job skills. The students learn how to
count stock at the grocery store, how to run a cash register, and how to handle money. Bobby's class
actually learned these things along with reading and writing. In my opinion, I think these skills
which teach the children how to take care of themselves is a lot more valuable than most of the
things that Sean was learning.
Sean's mother and other advocates of mainstreaming, on the other hand, believe that children with
mental handicaps should be taught the same skills as any other child. They say that teaching a child
how to count stock and use a cash register is basically telling the children that they won't amount to
anything more than working at Mc Donald's. They say that it ruins their hopes and dreams of
becoming something else. But advocates fail to realize that although Sean made it through the first
grade (barely), the intellectual gap between him and his peers gets larger as they get older. It will be
even harder for Sean to keep up next year in second grade. And then what will happen in junior
high? It will be extremely difficult for Sean to stay in a regular classroom. As it is in first grade,
Sean is taken out of class for help with

Psych Tech 155 Term Paper For this research paper my client will be known as H.C. This particular
client has suffered from multiple diagnoses during his time at Sonoma Developmental Center
(SDC). My client has lived at SDC since 1947, at the age of 13 years old. H.C. willingly came to
SDC when his family could no longer cope with his behaviors. He liked to be independent and was
an active worker when he worked at his job sites. H.C. had a bundle of past achievements that he
enjoyed mentioning to his aides by pointing at pictures. At a frail age H.C. could do his activities of
daily living, but needs assistance from time to time. Physically H.C. was a short man with balding
white hair and had poor eyesight so he wore glasses. His walking gait was failing and his feet would
shift against the floor, so he had a walker that he could use. He was socially withdrawn and would
only communicate when he felt that his needs were pressed. He had trouble finding words to
communicate what he wanted to say and would like to do things on his own rather than relying on
staff. He also lived by his set schedule, so anytime there was an appointment set for him he needed
to be reminded before his day began. Being at SDC would mean that there is an onset disease that
would keep an individual being treated there from living individually or in a community setting.

Analysis: Dumbing Down The Presidency
Dumbing Down the Presidency The public have watched in suspended horror, or elation, depending
on your perspective, how Donald J. Trump has turned the presidential primaries into a reality TV
show. With his background as a reality producer and star, he has reached into his repertoire of
gimmicks to unleash campaign tactics unseen in recent memory. Each and every night in the news,
we are treated to his childish antics of name calling, insults to his colleagues and opponents,
blaming and vilifying minority communities for the ills of the country and threatening to abolish the
fourteenth amendment of the constitution. All of this happens as majority of the nation's elite media
outlets sits on the sideline, sometimes cheering him on. What is more distressing than watching the
media become spectators instead of doing their job of asking hard hitting questions or correcting the
inaccuracies that form the basis of Mr. Trump's campaign, is listening to their so–called analysis of
why he has become popular and leading the polls among other Republican candidates. The current
narrative is that he has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Dumbing Down Of Society As A Result Of Technology

The Dumbing Down of Society as a Result of Technology In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451,
technology plays a major role in the society. Their society is so influenced by technology that they
simply cannot function without it. They aren't capable of thinking on their own because they rely so
heavily on technology to think for them. Bradbury's prediction was correct. The world is so reliant
on their technology that students can't leave their phones at home for one day without being behind
on an assignment or two. Technology plays a crucial role in American society today in economic
and social ways. It allows society to easily communicate with people all around the world with just
one click of a button. Therefore, technology is a good thing when used in the Virtually all businesses
today use some form of technology to more efficiently produce their services or products. Even
social networks have been created to allow people to post events in their lives and talk to others
online. Texting permits people to communicate without out actually talking to each other. Although,
these enhancements in technology allow for quicker and easier forms of communication, society is
also becoming much less social as a result. increase In Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury argues that the
development of technology is "dumbing down" people in the Utopian society, ultimately warping
the perfect world into a dystopian society. Ray

The Disorder Of Down Syndrome
Have you ever wonder or questioned the disorder of down syndrome? According to many National
Down Syndrome Society within the United States, Down syndrome has occurred one out of eight
hundred births. It is the most frequent form of mental retardation and characterized by well–defined
events and distinctive features. It's a lifelong disorder caused by a genetic defeat that's none curable.
It takes people with patients and kind hearts to care for people with Down syndrome disorder.
History
In the late nineteenth century John Langdon Down, an English physician published the description
of a person with Down syndrome. In 1866 his scholarly work was published that gave him the name
"father" of Down syndrome. Where in 1959 the French ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

rather a small segment of the long arm of this chromosome. Only two other triomies occurs with any
significant frequency: trisomy 13 (Patau's syndrome) and trisomy 18 (Edwards' syndrome). Trisomy
21 is one of the most common human chromosomal aberrations occurring in about 0.5 percent of all
conceptions and in one out of every seven hundred to eight hundred live birth.
Description
When the sperm cells from the father and the egg cells from the mother are formed, they both
undergo a reduction of their total number of chromosome from forty–six to twenty–three. This
process is called meiosis (which contain one–half of the chromosome number found in the original
cell before division) when a baby is conceived by the combination of one sperm cell with one egg
cell, the baby receives twenty–three chromosomes from each parent for a total of forty–six
chromosomes. Occasionally, an error occurs in the reduction process instead of passing on twenty–

The Abortion Debate No One Wants to Have

There are many people with permanent disability's that contribute to our society in very useful ways.
In most cases, these people are viewed as being courageous. This kind of a reaction is typical but not
always honest. There are a lot of people are uncomfortable around those that are considered "less
than normal". In her article The Abortion Debate No One Wants to Have, Patricia Bauer writes
about Down's syndrome and abortion. Bauer is a former reporter and bureau chief for the

with the reader, we are left to wonder how many people share the Ivy League director's views.
Down syndrome occurs in people who were born with three, rather than two, copies of the 21st
chromosome. This extra genetic material is what brings about the effects of Down's syndrome. It is
often characterized by an impairment of cognitive (process of thought) ability. Most people with
Down syndrome have lower than average, mild to moderate, cognitive ability and this cannot be
predicted at birth. A smaller number fall into the severe impairment range. Physically, people with
Down's syndrome are smaller in stature, have less muscle tone, and have noticeably different facial
features. The number of these births occurs approximately in one out of every one thousand
(ndss.org). As of 2007, the number of people in the United States with Down syndrome stood at
about 350,000. These numbers will shrink because now (most) potential parents can know the
condition of the fetus early. This information is included to let the reader relate to the struggles that
some with Down syndrome goes through. The question of ethics is also raised, and adds to the
consistently hot topic of abortion. Consider this from the Baptist Press. "A couple of

There were several special populations that I found to be interesting. These populations include
children with learning disabilities, overweight children, childhood diabetes, people with illnesses
due to nervous system disorders, and abused women. After carefully looking at all these different
topics I decided on people with illnesses due to nervous system disorders.
All the populations listed above have affected my life in one way or another. There is only one that I
have to live with on a daily bases. I have an illness due to a nervous system disorder. Day by day I
have to live with the effects o multiple sclerosis. The interest in this area comes from me wanting to

These organizations that the case manager could recommend include the following: MSFriends,
MSWorld, Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, Multiple Sclerosis Foundation and the
National Multiple Sclerosis Society. All these organizations could be helpful to the client.
There are several limitations that come to mind when thinking about dealing with clients with
multiple sclerosis. With me having multiple sclerosis I am more empathic with others that have the
same illness. Since I feel this way many times people will take advantage of me. Another limitation
is that my mind may not always be in the right place. When I say this I mean sometimes I could be
having a bad day and not meaning to I could gibe the impression to the client that I do not care
about what is happening with them. My main strength when it comes to dealing with this population
is my knowledge about the illness. Having first hand knowledge as to what a person can expect and
explaining this to them is very helpful. The main way I would use my strength to overcome my
limitations is by remembering that knowledge is the most important thing when it comes to having
multiple sclerosis. Being compassionate is important but having that knowledge can mean life or
death.
With multiple sclerosis I do not think there would be any multicultural issues to consider. This is an
illness that does not see color or culture. Anyone can get this illness; just if you do you

Congenital Heart Disease ( Chd )
Congenital Heart disease (CHD)
Congenital heart disease is also known as "Congenital heart defect" or congenital cardiovascular
malformations. The word "congenital" means existing at birth. Congenital heart defects change the
normal flow of blood to the heart. CHD is the most common type of birth defect, this disease affects
8 out of every 1,000 newborns. More than 35,000 babies each year in the United States are born
with a congenital heart defect.
If you have a congenital heart defect it means your heart has a problem with its structure when you
were born. Defects may involve the inferior walls of the heart, the valves inside the heart, the
arteries and veins that carry the blood to the heart or the body. You may also be born with a small
hole in your heart or it could be more severe. In these cases there may be very serious conditions,
but many of which can be treated with surgery.
Congenital heart disease include many different types of defects. Some of these defects are simple,
such as a hole in the septum. Others, are more complex and severe that include combinations of
simple defects, problems with the location of blood vessels leading to and from the heart and other
serious problems with the development of the heart. The different types of defects ranging from
simple to complex are holes in the heart (septal defects or atrial septal defects–ASD), Patent Ductus
Arteriosus (PDA–abnormal blood flow occurs between the aorta and pulmonary artery), Narrowed

Analysis Of The Article ' Dumbing Down Our Schools ' Essay
Here is where you'll work on your drafts of Assignment 3.
Introduction Paragraph:
In the article "Dumbing Down Our Schools," Ruth Mitchell states the argument of most classroom
work found in the large town and city high schools are below the academic grade level, except the
Advanced Placement and Honors classes. She brings up that high school students are doing the same
activities that an elementary student would do. Mitchell has brought up convincing points that
supports her argument, such as statics. Her persuasive reasonings does seem logical because it
relates to people that have witness the urban high school education, along with her confident
analyzation approaches.
First Supporting Paragraph: Throughout the article, Mitchell uses sensible experiences and statistics
to back up her argument. Mitchell, a colleague, and a West Coast group called DataWorks have
conducted research on the work that 's been made in the classrooms. Mitchell says "I found one out
of eight assignments at grade level in two high schools." This means that 12.5 percent of all
assignments are at the correct academic grade level that the students are working on. The colleague
has discovered that "about 40 English classes" he or she has "found one that the class" was teaching
actual learning. Given this fact, why are the other 39 English classes not teaching the correct grade
level of material? Well, the teachers say "they have to teach students where they are." This means
that if the student

Why Do Things Happen?
I like to believe that everything happens for a reason. Coincidences are something unknown to me.
Marilyn Monroe once said, "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that
you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they 're right, you believe
lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so
better things can fall together." With all my ups and downs, my mistakes, and my responsibilities I
deem I have matured as an individual. Psychologically maturity is the ability to react to the
environment in an appropriate manner. Maturity is the comprehension of the purpose in life. Life's
purpose, the direction in which it is aiming, and the feeling of life being meaningful. If the major
down in my life never happened I wouldn't be who I am today and wouldn't have reached the
understanding of everything happening for a reason.
I was raised in Southern California. At the time I was a freshman and had so much going. I was
attending my dream high school and cheering for a competitive team, but best of all I had my family
and friends. Around this time my mother had met a man, Mike. They met through a friend and she
really liked him. One downfall, he lived in Northern California. After some time of commuting my
mother, my sister, and me packed up our life to go live with him. We started our own family and a

Adults with disabilities are significantly less likely than people without disabilities to participate in
the labour market and often experience lower earnings (Taylor et al., 2004; Pagan, 2009; Yamamoto
et al., 2012), as well as limited opportunities for promotion and career advancement (Yamamoto et
al., 2012). People with disabilities are only half as likely to be in employment as their peers of
working age (Action Plan for Jobs, 2014). As a result people with disabilities also experience
consistently higher poverty rates than people without disabilities. The Central Statistics Office

Unemployment not only creates economic disadvantage but also decreases self–esteem and
increases isolation and marginalisation (Stuart, 2006). Unemployment is considered to be one of the
primary causes of exclusion in society, which can impact an individuals well–being, decrease their
opportunities to participate in social and recreational activities, and lead to poverty or homelessness
(Kitching, 2009; Nolan, 2005). Employment can help reduce stigma associated with having a
disability in our society.
Where will the employment opportunities for people with disabilities be created?
The majority of employment opportunities for people with disabilities will be created within the
mainstream labour market. There needs to be equality of opportunity for people with disabilities
within the overall system. This raises the question about how to get an increased number of people
with disabilities into the mainstream labour market?
Following the Report of the Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities, the principle of
mainstreaming has been established policy since 2000, and was put into legislation in the Disability
Act 2005 (NDS, 2013). The Employment Equality Act 1998, the Equal Status Act 2000, the
Equality Act 2004 and the Disability Act 2005 have all contributed to the current labour market
situation in Ireland (Government of Ireland, 1998; 2000; 2004; 2005). The Employment Equality
Act established that it is illegal to discriminate in relation

According to Carr and multiple psychologists, the Internet can inhibit cognition. Because these
people didn't grow up with Internet, like the Millennials did, they fear the power of the World Wide

Similar to college, my private school did not provide free textbooks. Instead of spending almost
$800 each year on textbooks, I utilized E–books–– the electronic version of a printed book. E–books
are affordable and lightweight substitutes. During high school and college, the Internet saved me
from spending thousands of dollars and experiencing occasional backache.
In 2002, my parents brought a bulky Windows 98 desktop Dell computer into the living room. I
used two websites: PBS kids and Starfall–more interactive and exciting alternatives to my tedious
summer work books. While my parents were busy, I sharpened my phonetic skills and gained an
appreciation for reading. Consequently, I morphed into a sterling speller and a bookish first–grader.
As the years advanced, I used the Internet–particularly Google, to assist with academic research and
personal edification. The Internet has been of much avail, in my effort to mature into a well–

Disability : A Cause Disability
Have you ever get a chance to know about disability, a cause of disability, and the consequence?
Disability is a condition, which may restrict the person mental, sensory or mobility function to
undertake or perform a task in the same way as a person who does not have a disability. One
disability comes in much Variety of shape, sex, color, and culture like others do. The only thing that
separates a person with a disability is that, they only cannot do certain things in the same way as the
mainstream of society. Because there are many different reasons and conditions can impair their
behavior, movement, and mobility. The inability to use legs, arms, or body because of paralysis,
stiffness, pain or other common impairment may change their thinking and also behavior. Moreover,
it may be the result of disease, age, birth defects or accidents, and they may be contributing to other
disabilities such as, impairing speech, memory loss, short stature, and hearing loss. It is the most
important thing to change our observation when we come to Childs with a disability because they
may find it difficult to participate when they facing social and physical barriers. Most people have a
different attitude for disability and they treat them differently. Unfortunately, this type of thinking or
stereotyping is one form of discrimination. Also, it is diverse when we see disability between
developed and developing country. In developed country disabled teens have the accessory to use

The Ideas Of Discrimination And Employment Problems
Reading through the prompt at first I felt flustered because I did not know what country to pick. But
through some research and investigation I've concluded that for this paper India would be a great
candidate, what specifically interested me was the fact that India is much different compared too
many other countries, they are a wealthy country and have many different cultural views compared
to others. The main topics I am going to talk about throughout this paper are the ideas of
discrimination and employment problems people with disabilities in India face. The definition of
discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people or things, especially on the grounds of
race, age, or sex. The reason I felt these two topics were important is because they go hand in hand;
you can be easily discriminated against while trying to find a job based on skin color, gender, etc.
First, I will discuss the problem with discrimination and women in India. Secondly, I will go over
employment how it affects people with disabilities
To start off I am going to talk about discrimination in India and more specifically how it affects
women with disabilities. The first thing I want to leave you with is a quote from a source that I
found very interesting, "Women and girls with disabilities in India are forced into mental hospitals
and institutions, where they face unsanitary conditions, risk physical and sexual violence, and
experience involuntary treatment, including electroshock therapy.

Genetics Synthesis: Marfan Syndrome Essay
Marfan Syndrome
Marfan Syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder mainly caused by defects in the gene FBN1
that codes for the protein fibrillin. Approximately 1 in 5,000 people are affected. Cardinal features
involve the ocular, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems. There is a high degree of
variability of this disorder, sometimes presenting itself at birth or later in childhood or adulthood.
On one end of the spectrum is severe neonatal presentation with rapidly progressive disease, while
on the other end isolated phenotypic features may be the only presenting signs. Life expectancy,
with proper management, approximates to that of the general population.

Participation in contact sports, competitive sports and isometric exercise should be restricted.
Decongestants, caffeine, psychostimulants all should be avoided or used with caution and be

contaminate the bloodstream is needed.
Pulmonary attributes: spontaneous pneumothorax, reduced pulmonary reserve and sleep apnea.
Skin attributes: 2/3 of people with marfan syndrome develop stretch marks often across the lower
back and the inguinal and axillary regions due to rapid growth. Stretch marks are typically
perpendicular to the axes of growth. Higher risk for hernias due to the defect in connective tissue.
Neurological attributes: stretching of the dural sac in the dependent lumbosacral region, resulting in

There also appears to be "no routine or systematic procedure for identifying adults with learning
disabilities at any point in the criminal justice system" (Talbot 2007),meaning that when they do
arrive in prison they are predominately more likely to be victimised than other prisoners and are
consequently unable to access prison information routinely. Most importantly, "their exclusion from
offending behaviour programmes in particular makes it less likely that their offending behaviour
will be addressed and it is more likely that they will return to prison again and again". (Talbot 2007
p.45). It is therefore fair to say that adults with learning disabilities health and social wellbeing is
severely compromised when they come in contact with the justice system with little seeming to
work properly, leaving these vulnerable individuals open to all sorts of abuse. It is the task of the
multi agency/disciplinary team to focus on protecting the general welfare of adults with learning

professionals and specialists who support the criminal justice service, (for the courts this might be

Down Syndrome : A Genetic Disorder
Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects a person's facial features and intelligence. Down
syndrome is also commonly known as Down's syndrome, Trisomy 21, Trisomy G, 47,XX,+21, or
47,XY,+21. In 1866, English physician John Langdon Down is known as the "father" of Down
syndrome. He was given that title for his publication of an accurate description of a person with
Down syndrome, hence the reason why the disorder was named after him; although, this disorder
was known as "Mongolism" until the 1970s. More information was learned about Down syndrome
in 1959 when French physician Jérôme Lejeune identified that the disorder was caused by a
chromosomal error. Then in 2000, a team of scientists was able to classify roughly 329 genes on
chromosome 21, opening the door to many more advancements in the world of research for Down
syndrome.
Down syndrome is inherited because of a chromosomal error. It occurs when someone gains an
extra 21 chromosome. Usually, an individual will inherit two copies of chromosome 21, one from
each parent. The extra 21 chromosomes can be inherited in three different ways, which results in
three different types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21 (nondisjunction), mosaicism, and translocation.
Trisomy 21 or nondisjunction is the most common form of Down syndrome; responsible for 95
percent of all the cases of Down syndrome. In this type of Down syndrome, the embryo contains
three 21 chromosomes which is the result of the sperm or egg cell failing to

Central Idea: The society we live in today blames popular culture for destroying the lives of most
young ones. Critics come up with conclusions that pop culture is the cause of educational failure.
But they fail to look at the real reasons why we have a lot of young ones who cannot graduate from
high school or even afford a quality education. My aim is to convince my audience that there is a lot
going on in our society other than pop culture when it comes to education and learning.
I. Introduction: They say that popular culture does not help us understand the educational
experiences of the young ones whose families have little or no education and at the same time live in
communities where there are unequipped schools. They claim that the internet is "rewiring" young
people's minds, young ones being given the opportunity to choose between the "pull of popular and
the push of schooling", choose the former. They prefer Justin Bieber to Isaac Newton. News stories
say that in order for kids to be able to graduate from high school, they have to reject the "nonsense"
they are being exposed to in our pop culture.
II. All these stories insinuate that popular culture is directly opposed to education and knowledge
and that this prevents learning.
A. But they fail to address the massive budget cuts that many public schools have to endure.
B. They fail to address the

The Braindead Megaphone By Jon Ronson
"The Braindead Megaphone" in Jon Ronson's So You've Been Publicly Shamed It seems not a day
goes by without news of a major calamity echoing in the chamber that is the news. This echo
chamber might even lead you to think that we are living in the most dangerous time in history.
Protest spring up in one city, wars start in another country, a terrorist group kills civilians, or North
Korea performs a nuclear test. What this news might not tell you is that we are living in the most
peaceful time, that less children die in birth today than ever before, that many diseases that were
once prevalent have all but been eradicated. This is what George Saunders speaks off in his essay

Sanders feared that in a world ruled by the internet everyone would be the megaphone man, and no
one would be able to hear one another. Sanders was right. At the time of his writing social media
was just beginning to take root in our society, Facebook was in it's infancy, and twitter had been
founded year prior. As the two social media giants engrossed us all, like perfect dancers, we danced
to the megaphone's noise. This spread gave us all a megaphone and Jon Ronson's book So You've
been Publicly Shamed explores just how we have been using it. But while Saunders was right that
we would abuse this megaphone and dumb down our society, the hatred and vitriol it has spread in
our society is something that he never could have guessed. The book explores public shaming, evens
where many individuals attacked a person for trivial reasons, ruining their lives, hurting their future,
and scarring them until the day they die. An avalanche of hatred covers and suffocates this person,
but not single one of those snowflakes feels responsible, no one of those snowflakes ever thinks how
their actions might are hurting the person, nonetheless, the person dies; a life ruined, and not a
person to blame. The megaphone and the distraction it causes allows some to excuses their actions
and do things that would be otherwise reprehensible. One of

Dumbing Down
How much of a problem is the so–called 'Dumbing down' in British Journalism? Since turning into
an unmistakable piece of present day human culture, the media has dependably been a wellspring of
debate. Particularly, journalism has often been accused as being the protagonist in the so called
'dumbing down' of society. Usually used as a derogatory term, 'dumbing down' is the simplifying
and diluting of a subject towards the lowest common denominator. In other words, it's used to
describe the lack of definition between what is considered high culture, usually referring to the
classical arts and relating to the rich upper class, and ''pop'' culture, a more ephemeral and
commercial forum seen as inferior to that of high culture. In this essay, ... Show more content on

the 1940's. The ''Hypodermic Needle'' or ''Magic Bullet'' theory maintained that "people were
uniformly controlled by their biologically based 'instincts' and that they react more or less uniformly
to whatever 'stimuli' came along" (Lowery & DefFleur, 1995: 400). I believe however, a more
adequate audience reception model is the ''Uses and Gratifications'' theory. This theory explores not
how we consume certain media, but for what reasons. Different people digest different news for
different reasons. It implies that the reason we may me be more attracted to ''junk food news'' as
escapism of simply a conversation starter/mutual interest if the masses. In the interest of differing
trends and genre crazes of our modern society, media institutions create productions/front pages that
they know will attract an ample demographic. Akin to how Broadsheet Newspapers are slowly but
surely adopting the more popular tabloid–like format, the media is simply acting in response to
audience preferences and the ever changing interests of the

The Pros and Cons of Prenatal Screening Essay
Child is a gift from God. Every parent hopes for a healthy child. However, abnormalities in the fetus
growth becoming common nowadays. These may be due to physical, radiation and chemical factors.
These factors will cause deformities such as genetic mutation which causes mental retardation,
abnormal body buildup and other conditions which bring a lot of troubles in the future to the child
themselves and their parents. Modern technologies and innovations in the medical field had
developed a method to detect the abnormality before delivery and prevent this future tragedy to
happen. This method is known as prenatal screening. There are several advantages and
disadvantages of prenatal screening.

When parents know the fetus is "special", they may be chosen to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, in
general prenatal screening helps to detect congenital disabilities but is also thought to be the
'remedy' selective abortion (Seller, 1976).
One of the benefits of prenatal screening is to enable early detection of the developmental defect
embryology. This embryology developmental defect may be due to the mutation or genetic
inheritance. Mutation is a condition characterized by permanent change in the DNA sequence that
makes up a gene. It can range in different sizes from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a
large segment of a chromosome. On the other hand, genetic inheritance is a condition whereby
parents pass traits such as height and other characteristics to the children by chromosomes.
"Sonograms, genetic tests and a new test called pre–implantation genetic diagnosis –– which is a
genetic test conducted on embryos for people attempting pregnancy through in vitro fertilization ––
allow women to better predict if the infant will have a genetic defect" (New York Times Magazine,
2006). Thus thorough these tests, medical practitioners are able to identify and make early
preparation toward any abnormalities of the fetus.
Besides that, prenatal screening also improves lives. This is because prenatal screening is able to
prevent abnormalities which bring difficulties in human life. At this time, "no regulations ... prenatal

Analysis of Richard Adams' Watership Down Essay
Analysis of Richard Adams' Watership Down
Richard Adams novel, Watership Down, is the account of a group of rabbits trip to search out a new
location to inhabit. After escaping the Sandleford Warren because of one rabbit's instincts, nearly a
dozen rabbits cross virgin country. Along the way, they run across a few other warrens. These places
exhibit a completely different way of living to the fleeing group. What they learn is vital when they
develop their own warren. From these places they manage to collect some rabbits to increase their
size once they reach a resting point at their final destination. Each of the places they encounter is set

The warren of snares could be considered socialist because all the rabbits there are equal and no one

Efrafa can only be explained as a totalitarian warren with General Woundwort clearly being the

organized to conceal its existence . . . the Owsla have every rabbit in the place under orders. You
can't call your life your own: and in return you have safety– if it's worth having at the price you pay"
(Adams 238–9). All dwellers of the warren have a marking that distinguishes them from other
groups, controlling their time above ground. They also must defecate in a specific area and then
conceal it. There are more rabbits than the warren can hold, with the majority of females unable to
reproduce because of the overcrowding. All rabbits aspire to be in the Owsla and the Council
because of the privileges and they have the best of everything (Adams 240). Woundwort maintains
his power over the warren through fear and force, which, in the end, causes his great downfall.
The rabbits reach the Watership Down early on in the story, where they decide to remain and set up
a government with the will of the people being the deciding factor in regulations. After discovering
they are doeless, Bigwig convinces the does of Efrafa on the wonders of Watership Down, telling

One of the people who I chose to interview from my subculture of people with siblings who have
developmental disabilities is my roommate Hannah Dorough. Hannah and I had met briefly before
coming to school at various events through the University Honors Program before we truly
introduced ourselves at SOAR at the beginning of June. Since then, we have become close friends
throughout our time spent living together in our dorm room. I interviewed Hannah in our dorm room
this past Sunday after I got back to school from my weekend at home. We were sitting in the living
space of our room that we share with two other girls when I interviewed her about her five–year–old
half–sister named Bethany, who has autism. Hannah sat on the arm of the couch while I sat on the
couch cushions because that is where we both prefer to sit, even when we are just hanging out
around the room. Hannah moved throughout the kitchen area and living space, as well as venturing
into her room and bathroom when she received a call from her boyfriend, Alex, during the interview.
I, however, remained in my spot on the couch for the interview 's duration. I chose to interview
Hannah in our dorm room because the setting was comfortable for both of us because we live there.
However, there were a few distractions in our room because my other roommates and a few friends
were over at the same time, so they were having their own conversations at the same time. Despite

By the 20th century, Down syndrome had not been identified as a genetic condition caused by an
extra chromosome. Instead, Down syndrome was the most recognizable form of mental disabilities
because of the distinctive facial features associated with the disease. Those who suffered form the
condition were institutionalized and died in infancy or early adult life since their medical problems

Most Successful People Who Have Down Syndrome Essay
"When you judge someone based on a diagnosis, you miss out on their abilities and uniqueness" –
Sevenly. People tend to jump to conclusions when they see somebody with a disorder. They tend to
believe they are incapable of being an active member of society or even incompetent of simple
tasks. These are common beliefs when people see people with down syndrome, which are false
statements. People with down syndrome are just as capable as people without it. There are many
successful people who have down syndrome. Some famous and successful people are:
Lauren Potter, a known actress from the T.V series Glee, Angela Bachiller, the first elected
councilwoman, Melissa Reilly, a gold medal winner for skiing, swimming and cycling, Sujeet Desai,
who plays seven instruments, won numerous awards for music, had a 4.3 average throughout
postsecondary school and graduated from Berkshire Hills Music Academy and Pablo Pineda, a
writer, speaker, actor (with award for best actor of 2009) and has a bachelor's degree in educational
psychology. (Flanders, 2014).
When somebody has a disability, it does not mean they are incapable of being successful or lack
talents and qualities.
The dictionary definition of down syndrome is "a genetic disorder, associated with the presence of
an extra chromosomes 21, characterized by mild to severe mental impairment, weak muscle tone,

a different facial appearance, and poor muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy.
Individuals with Down Syndrome also have an increased risk for having heart defects, digestive

When there is a heart defect currently in an infant with Down syndrome, the infant is referred to a
"pediatric cardiologist" for medical attention or to a "pediatric cardiac surgeon for early surgical

blockages in their bowels. Surgery can be performed to correct these problems. After they are
corrected, they usually cause no further health issues. Children with Down syndrome may have
"frequent colds and sinus and ear infections." These are treated early and aggressively to prevent
hearing loss and chronic infections. Low thyroid levels are more common in infants who have Down

school teacher in the public school system for thirty years demonstrate that the modern education
system emphasizes memorization, standardized testing, and activities to kill time rather than
promote individual thought. Although the public school system fails to properly teach, Gatto states
that it is still possible for this generation to actually learn if we simply take the time to learn how to

current methods of schooling and refusal of standardized testing are a couple of the solutions Gatto
advocates. In addition, we must stop being afraid, take responsibility for our own education, and
"learn to master valuable skills and put them on offer to the world at large" (549). Although Gatto's
argument is one that has validity, I believe the education system could improve with better use of

Children With Disabilities And Disabilities Essay
Disability is not inability is a common phrase many people understand today. In this regard, many
have accepted that the people with disabilities have capacity to undertake some duties just like the
other people, which can be seen in the increasing number of people with disabilities in institutions
of higher learning as well as many working places. There are different forms of disabilities, some
visible and others invisible. Although people with disabilities are incorporated in the general
working environments as well as institutions of higher learning among other places, many are still
facing many challenges while interacting and living out their daily lives. Some organizations accept
people with disabilities since it is a legal requirement not that they are willing to do so. In this
regard, public policy has established some measures that can protect individuals with disabilities.
Still, this exposes people with disabilities to barriers, stigmatization, and prejudice among other
forms of challenges. As such, it is possible to see many people with disabilities (e.g. visible:
wheelchair bond or with cane and invisible: mental health or learning disabilities) are being socially
and culturally affected by the general population's perspective on them. This paper discusses
stigmas, barriers, prejudices, and discrimination as the major difficulties that people with disabilities

The Effects Of Language On The Development Of A Child
The acquisition of language is essential to the development of a child. Though some children are
born genetically mutated, specifically children with Down's syndrome, the capabilities of acquiring
language during developmental markers is far less than a child with just 21 chromosomes. Parents
and/or guardians of infants and toddlers with Down's syndrome believe that their child will one day
be able to verbally communicate with them. They presume the possibility, but does research support
their beliefs? For the purpose of this paper, the child from infancy through three–years old will be
discussed in regards to the developmental domain that are affected by Down's syndrome. The
undeniable assumption is if an institution provides early intervention for an infant or toddler with
Down's syndrome, then that child's social–emotional and language will be affected. About 80% of
individuals with Down syndrome have moderate intellectual disability, although some have severe
intellectual disability and others have IQ scores in the average range (Pueschel, 1995; Roizen,
2007). The first of two developmental domains that are affected by Down's syndrome is a child's
cognitive development. According to Piaget, the leading view of cognition in young children was
that it was constructed through interactions with their environment. This approach held up for
several decades until a few theorists who derived from Vygotskian methods challenged Piaget and
established that young children build

Society´s Problem with Down Syndrome
On September 10, 2011, Gilberto Powell, a Down syndrome man, was walking home from his
friend's house, less than one block away from his own home, when he was stopped by two Miami–
Dade police officers. The officers had stopped him due to their suspicion that Powell had a weapon
on him. What the two officers believed to be a weapon was simply a colostomy bag that Gilberto
wore on his waist. The officers tried to do a pat–down search of the 22–year–old man. Gilberto
became frightened by the two officers and pushed off the car in an attempt to flee to his home.
Police say that they gave multiple commands for him to stop moving, when he fell on the ground
and hit his head. He still tried to escape by hitting one of the officers in the chest. The officer then
struck Gilberto in the face with an open hand in an attempt to subdue him. He was then handcuffed.
The officers then forcibly removed the colostomy bag. This event makes many people wonder if
officers would act with excessive force if an innocent citizen were under suspicion for some sort of
crime. This leads into the controversy of whether or not officers should be held responsible for what
they have done. The argument for the police officers is that they are simply doing what they were
trained to do. To act fast and resolve a problem quickly is the way they learned how to deal with a
problem. Proponents for the victims of these cases believe that officers should be able to identify the

Disability is something that we take negatively, most commonly in Bangladesh we like to address

Health Organization's definition:
Disabilities is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation
restrictions. An impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a
difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction
is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. Thus disability is a
complex phenomenon, reflecting an interaction between features of a person's body and features of

Language Shapes Our Society 's Communication And Thoughts
Language shapes our society's communication and thoughts in more ways than one. It is constantly
evolving, which is why it is important to be mindful of what is said anywhere one may be. Words
that may not typically offend one person may be hurtful to someone else. Many of the people that
are most forgotten about are those with disabilities, minor or severe. Since person first language has
been defined, it has given a voice and boosted the self–esteem to many of those that society often
forgets. Through time we have come to understand that "Person–First Language" is important for
the equality and acceptance of people with disabilities.
Throughout history, people with disabilities have always been victimized. The bible tells many tales
of people who were disabled. In these stories, they were referred to as "crippled" (Charles 31). The
stereotype of disability has evolved from people being referred to as "crippled" to "Disreputables",
which were people used as entertainment in the middle ages (Charles 34), then to "Waste
Humanity", which were people that were sterilized and killed because they were deemed unfit to
live in the mid 1900s (Charles 38–39). This gives insight to the evolution of a problem that is just
recently being addressed. Today, calling people crippled, disreputables, and waste humanity is
considered dehumanizing. People in communities were not properly educated or prepared to deal
with people who were mentally or physically different. Awareness was brought

A. Who first discovered the genetic disorder or autoimmune disease? How was it discovered?

he misunderstood how Down syndrome arises. The cause of Down syndrome was rather recently
discovered in 1959. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder and most common cause of cognitive
impairments. B. Is the disease state recessive or dominant? Explain your answer.
Answer: The disease isn't a disease, it is considered a disorder. This disorder can't be a disease
because it is a disorder with having an extra chromosome. It is a disorder because it is caused by the

Trisomy 21 is a disorder that is also considered a chromosomal abnormality because it has an extra
chromosome added. This causes the abnormality to have Down syndrome. Like in most cases of
Down syndrome are not inherited. When the condition is caused by trisomy 21, the chromosomal
abnormality occurs as a random event during the formation of reproduction cells in a parent. The
abnormality usually occurs in egg cells, but it occasionally occurs in sperm cells.
E. is it an autosome or sex linked? Explain your answer.
Answer: out of 46 chromosomes, 44 are autosomal. The remaining 2 chromosomes are sex
chromosomes. Chromosomal disorder Down syndrome/ trisomy 21: having an extra chromosome
for the 21st pair causes Down syndrome. This here would be sex linked because your sex
chromosomes are the ones who determine if you are to have the disorder. Also because your parents
are the ones who are passing their chromosomes and those sex chromosomes are what makes you. F.
what specifically causes the disorder or disease? Describe what happens to which gene. Answer: The
most common form of Down syndrome is known as Trisomy 21, a condition where individuals have
47 chromosomes in each cell instead of 46. This is caused by an error in cell division called
nondisjunction, which leaves a sperm or egg cell with an extra copy of chromosome 21 before or at
conception. To the genes when the cell division occurs is when the extra chromosome goes to find a

Caulfield–type of character. "Eskimos" really eludes any obvious meaning, but it's in there ...
somewhere. Okay, here goes .... the larger theme is war. It's the backbone of most of Nine Stories.
Franklin was not drafted, because he has a bad heart, and he and Ginnie talk about this briefly, but
long enough for Ginnie to connect it with what they are subconsciously discussing: rejection. From
the get–go – with her demanding to be reimbursed for the cab fare – Ginnie appears to be a girl who
takes things for granted; she gets everything she wants. Ginnie's not deliberately mean, but she
doesn't accept things as they are, but rather demands that they be how she wants them and easily
dismisses things/people she doesn't care for. She wants to throw the furniture in Selena's home out
the window, for example. Then, in walks Franklin, who is boldly himself. Their conversation begins
with his rejection from the draft, then moves to his rejection by Ginnie's sister, then Ginnie's
rejection of the sandwich he offers her. Ginnie is connecting with a person who has been rejected his

A big problem that is becoming of lawsuits is Wrongful Birth Cases. Wrongful birth by legal
definition is a term to describe medical malpractice. A claim that the child would not have been born
if medical malpractice did not occur (Knudsen, 2011). The legal definition of medical malpractice is
also known as medical negligence, this is a professional negligence by act or omission by a health

A major reason parents sue the care providers is because of the financial problems it takes in raising
a child with down syndrome or another disability. The parents want to seek damages for their child
with a birth defect. The parents also sue for the emotional distress they they suffered, as well as the
cost for the child. The parents seek award for the cost of the child for the rest of their life. The
plaintiff wants to show that the defendant was negligent in the diagnose of the rubella in her 1st
month of pregnancy. The rubella is a contagious viral disease with symptoms like mild measles.
This viral disease can cause fetal malformation to the baby if contracted in early pregnancy
(Dictionary.com). While wrongful birth does not just represent children with down syndrome it
represents all kinds of birth problems children are born with. A couple won a $4.5 million in a
lawsuit for wrongful birth. The parents claimed "They would have never brought their son Bryan
into the world if they had known about his horrific disabilities" (Hallowell, 2011). The parents son
was born with only three limbs, no arms and one leg; however, if Dr. Marie Morel and technicians at
OB/GYN specialists of the Palm Beaches did properly administered two ultrasounds and seen he
was missing three limbs the parents would have terminated the pregnancy (Howell, 2011). The
parents "understandably upset that they had no warning about the

  • 3. Down Syndrome: An Informative Essay Down Syndrome: An Informative Essay Down Syndrome is the name for babies born with a disorder related to their chromosomes. It is caused when meiosis occurs and an error occurs in the cells development. The reason for this defect is often because the parent is over 40 or for some other reason their meiosis is not "Up to par." The actual defect is an extra chromosome is developed during cell development. The abnormal development results in 47 chromosomes rather than the usual 46 (23 from each parent). This extra gene causes problems in the child's physical and mental development. There are an estimated 5000 babies with Down Syndrome born in America every single year. While the chances of having a Down Syndrome ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of these are: larger or almond shaped eyes (sometimes Brushfield spots on the irises), smaller than normal features, such as smaller ears or a smaller nose, short stubby fingers, a single palmar crease on their hands, and having exceptional social intelligence. Because Down Syndrome is cause by a cell abnormality during meiosis, it can not really be proven that Down Syndrome is hereditary. A perfectly healthy mother could have a Down Syndrome baby even though there was never any sign of the disorder in her pedigree. There are however, three different kinds of Down Syndrome. 95% of Down Syndrome babies have Trisomy 21. This is the presence of extra genetic material on the 21st pair of chromosomes. Around 4% have what is called Translocation. This is where the extra chromosome 21 decided to break away and attach itself to another chromosome. The last 1% is made up of those with Mosaicism. This is where some cells have Trisomy 21 while others do not. There is no cure for Down Syndrome. There is also not way to prevent it. Once faced with the fact you have a Down Syndrome baby however, the baby will need various kinds of checks and treatment to help it live. Down Syndrome babies have a very high rate of congenital heart defects. In fact 30% to 50% have these defects. An endocardiogram is a way to check babies for any signs of defect and start the child on treatment. Down Syndrome babies also require more effort ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Essay Mainstreaming Should be the Parents Decision Integrating children with handicaps into regular classrooms (also known as mainstreaming) has been a huge issue in education systems recently. The goal of mainstreaming is providing the most appropriate and beneficial education to a child in the least restrictive setting and so the question of where the children with handicaps benefit the most is the question that is the hardest to answer. In the 1960's there was no question. No one even thought about taking a child with a handicap out of special education and placing them within a regular classroom. But now, partly because of parent's requests, select school districts are mainstreaming. The debate over mainstreaming being good ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In special education, the teachers focus on teaching the skills that the children will need to survive so they can increase the chance that these children will be able to live independently. They focus on dressing and personal hygiene, as well as teaching them basic job skills. The students learn how to count stock at the grocery store, how to run a cash register, and how to handle money. Bobby's class actually learned these things along with reading and writing. In my opinion, I think these skills which teach the children how to take care of themselves is a lot more valuable than most of the things that Sean was learning. Sean's mother and other advocates of mainstreaming, on the other hand, believe that children with mental handicaps should be taught the same skills as any other child. They say that teaching a child how to count stock and use a cash register is basically telling the children that they won't amount to anything more than working at Mc Donald's. They say that it ruins their hopes and dreams of becoming something else. But advocates fail to realize that although Sean made it through the first grade (barely), the intellectual gap between him and his peers gets larger as they get older. It will be even harder for Sean to keep up next year in second grade. And then what will happen in junior high? It will be extremely difficult for Sean to stay in a regular classroom. As it is in first grade, Sean is taken out of class for help with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Term Paper Christiaan Talbo Jan Whitmer & Cliff Zyskowski December 9, 2015 Christiaan Talbo Psych Tech 155 Term Paper For this research paper my client will be known as H.C. This particular client has suffered from multiple diagnoses during his time at Sonoma Developmental Center (SDC). My client has lived at SDC since 1947, at the age of 13 years old. H.C. willingly came to SDC when his family could no longer cope with his behaviors. He liked to be independent and was an active worker when he worked at his job sites. H.C. had a bundle of past achievements that he enjoyed mentioning to his aides by pointing at pictures. At a frail age H.C. could do his activities of daily living, but needs assistance from time to time. Physically H.C. was a short man with balding white hair and had poor eyesight so he wore glasses. His walking gait was failing and his feet would shift against the floor, so he had a walker that he could use. He was socially withdrawn and would only communicate when he felt that his needs were pressed. He had trouble finding words to communicate what he wanted to say and would like to do things on his own rather than relying on staff. He also lived by his set schedule, so anytime there was an appointment set for him he needed to be reminded before his day began. Being at SDC would mean that there is an onset disease that would keep an individual being treated there from living individually or in a community setting. Most of the time it would be ... • 9. Analysis: Dumbing Down The Presidency Dumbing Down the Presidency The public have watched in suspended horror, or elation, depending on your perspective, how Donald J. Trump has turned the presidential primaries into a reality TV show. With his background as a reality producer and star, he has reached into his repertoire of gimmicks to unleash campaign tactics unseen in recent memory. Each and every night in the news, we are treated to his childish antics of name calling, insults to his colleagues and opponents, blaming and vilifying minority communities for the ills of the country and threatening to abolish the fourteenth amendment of the constitution. All of this happens as majority of the nation's elite media outlets sits on the sideline, sometimes cheering him on. What is more distressing than watching the media become spectators instead of doing their job of asking hard hitting questions or correcting the inaccuracies that form the basis of Mr. Trump's campaign, is listening to their so–called analysis of why he has become popular and leading the polls among other Republican candidates. The current narrative is that he has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is clearly not popular in Blue states. The Dumbing Down Of Society As A Result Of Technology Lula Yousuf Mrs. Madrigal Honors Literature–6th period 10 May 2015 The Dumbing Down of Society as a Result of Technology In Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, technology plays a major role in the society. Their society is so influenced by technology that they simply cannot function without it. They aren't capable of thinking on their own because they rely so heavily on technology to think for them. Bradbury's prediction was correct. The world is so reliant on their technology that students can't leave their phones at home for one day without being behind on an assignment or two. Technology plays a crucial role in American society today in economic and social ways. It allows society to easily communicate with people all around the world with just one click of a button. This process is called meiosis (which contain one–half of the chromosome number found in the original cell before division) when a baby is conceived by the combination of one sperm cell with one egg cell, the baby receives twenty–three chromosomes from each parent for a total of forty–six chromosomes. Occasionally, an error occurs in the reduction process instead of passing on twenty– three ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rhetorical Analysis of Abortion Article Essay Running head: ABORTION The Abortion Debate No One Wants to Have Michael McManus Baker College There are many people with permanent disability's that contribute to our society in very useful ways. In most cases, these people are viewed as being courageous. This kind of a reaction is typical but not always honest. There are a lot of people are uncomfortable around those that are considered "less than normal". Down syndrome occurs in people who were born with three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. This extra genetic material is what brings about the effects of Down's syndrome. It is often characterized by an impairment of cognitive (process of thought) ability. Most people with Down syndrome have lower than average, mild to moderate, cognitive ability and this cannot be predicted at birth. A smaller number fall into the severe impairment range. Physically, people with Down's syndrome are smaller in stature, have less muscle tone, and have noticeably different facial features. The number of these births occurs approximately in one out of every one thousand (ndss.org). As of 2007, the number of people in the United States with Down syndrome stood at about 350,000. These numbers will shrink because now (most) potential parents can know the condition of the fetus early. This information is included to let the reader relate to the struggles that some with Down syndrome goes through. The question of ethics is also raised, and adds to the consistently hot topic of abortion. Consider this from the Baptist Press. "A couple of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With me having multiple sclerosis I am more empathic with others that have the same illness. Since I feel this way many times people will take advantage of me. Another limitation is that my mind may not always be in the right place. When I say this I mean sometimes I could be having a bad day and not meaning to I could gibe the impression to the client that I do not care about what is happening with them. My main strength when it comes to dealing with this population is my knowledge about the illness. Having first hand knowledge as to what a person can expect and explaining this to them is very helpful. The main way I would use my strength to overcome my limitations is by remembering that knowledge is the most important thing when it comes to having multiple sclerosis. The word "congenital" means existing at birth. Congenital heart defects change the normal flow of blood to the heart. CHD is the most common type of birth defect, this disease affects 8 out of every 1,000 newborns. More than 35,000 babies each year in the United States are born with a congenital heart defect. If you have a congenital heart defect it means your heart has a problem with its structure when you were born. Defects may involve the inferior walls of the heart, the valves inside the heart, the arteries and veins that carry the blood to the heart or the body. You may also be born with a small hole in your heart or it could be more severe. In these cases there may be very serious conditions, but many of which can be treated with surgery. Congenital heart disease include many different types of defects. Some of these defects are simple, such as a hole in the septum. Others, are more complex and severe that include combinations of simple defects, problems with the location of blood vessels leading to and from the heart and other serious problems with the development of the heart. Introduction Paragraph: In the article "Dumbing Down Our Schools," Ruth Mitchell states the argument of most classroom work found in the large town and city high schools are below the academic grade level, except the Advanced Placement and Honors classes. She brings up that high school students are doing the same activities that an elementary student would do. Mitchell has brought up convincing points that supports her argument, such as statics. Her persuasive reasonings does seem logical because it relates to people that have witness the urban high school education, along with her confident analyzation approaches. First Supporting Paragraph: Throughout the article, Mitchell uses sensible experiences and statistics to back up her argument. Mitchell, a colleague, and a West Coast group called DataWorks have conducted research on the work that 's been made in the classrooms. Mitchell says "I found one out of eight assignments at grade level in two high schools." This means that 12.5 percent of all assignments are at the correct academic grade level that the students are working on. The colleague has discovered that "about 40 English classes" he or she has "found one that the class" was teaching actual learning. Given this fact, why are the other 39 English classes not teaching the correct grade level of material? Well, the teachers say "they have to teach students where they are." Marilyn Monroe once said, "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they 're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." With all my ups and downs, my mistakes, and my responsibilities I deem I have matured as an individual. Psychologically maturity is the ability to react to the environment in an appropriate manner. Maturity is the comprehension of the purpose in life. Life's purpose, the direction in which it is aiming, and the feeling of life being meaningful. If the major down in my life never happened I wouldn't be who I am today and wouldn't have reached the understanding of everything happening for a reason. I was raised in Southern California. At the time I was a freshman and had so much going. I was attending my dream high school and cheering for a competitive team, but best of all I had my family and friends. Around this time my mother had met a man, Mike. They met through a friend and she really liked him. One downfall, he lived in Northern California. Employment can help reduce stigma associated with having a disability in our society. Where will the employment opportunities for people with disabilities be created? The majority of employment opportunities for people with disabilities will be created within the mainstream labour market. There needs to be equality of opportunity for people with disabilities within the overall system. This raises the question about how to get an increased number of people with disabilities into the mainstream labour market? But through some research and investigation I've concluded that for this paper India would be a great candidate, what specifically interested me was the fact that India is much different compared too many other countries, they are a wealthy country and have many different cultural views compared to others. The main topics I am going to talk about throughout this paper are the ideas of discrimination and employment problems people with disabilities in India face. The definition of discrimination is the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. The reason I felt these two topics were important is because they go hand in hand; you can be easily discriminated against while trying to find a job based on skin color, gender, etc. First, I will discuss the problem with discrimination and women in India. Secondly, I will go over employment how it affects people with disabilities To start off I am going to talk about discrimination in India and more specifically how it affects women with disabilities. • 37. Down Syndrome : A Genetic Disorder Down syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects a person's facial features and intelligence. Down syndrome is also commonly known as Down's syndrome, Trisomy 21, Trisomy G, 47,XX,+21, or 47,XY,+21. In 1866, English physician John Langdon Down is known as the "father" of Down syndrome. He was given that title for his publication of an accurate description of a person with Down syndrome, hence the reason why the disorder was named after him; although, this disorder was known as "Mongolism" until the 1970s. More information was learned about Down syndrome in 1959 when French physician Jérôme Lejeune identified that the disorder was caused by a chromosomal error. Then in 2000, a team of scientists was able to classify roughly 329 genes on chromosome 21, opening the door to many more advancements in the world of research for Down syndrome. Down syndrome is inherited because of a chromosomal error. It occurs when someone gains an extra 21 chromosome. Usually, an individual will inherit two copies of chromosome 21, one from each parent. The extra 21 chromosomes can be inherited in three different ways, which results in three different types of Down syndrome: trisomy 21 (nondisjunction), mosaicism, and translocation. Trisomy 21 or nondisjunction is the most common form of Down syndrome; responsible for 95 percent of all the cases of Down syndrome. In this type of Down syndrome, the embryo contains three 21 chromosomes which is the result of the sperm or egg cell failing to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They claim that the internet is "rewiring" young people's minds, young ones being given the opportunity to choose between the "pull of popular and the push of schooling", choose the former. Mutation is a condition characterized by permanent change in the DNA sequence that makes up a gene. It can range in different sizes from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a large segment of a chromosome. On the other hand, genetic inheritance is a condition whereby parents pass traits such as height and other characteristics to the children by chromosomes. Since then, we have become close friends throughout our time spent living together in our dorm room. I interviewed Hannah in our dorm room this past Sunday after I got back to school from my weekend at home. We were sitting in the living space of our room that we share with two other girls when I interviewed her about her five–year–old half–sister named Bethany, who has autism. Hannah sat on the arm of the couch while I sat on the couch cushions because that is where we both prefer to sit, even when we are just hanging out around the room. Hannah moved throughout the kitchen area and living space, as well as venturing into her room and bathroom when she received a call from her boyfriend, Alex, during the interview. I, however, remained in my spot on the couch for the interview 's duration. I chose to interview Hannah in our dorm room because the setting was comfortable for both of us because we live there. However, there were a few distractions in our room because my other roommates and a few friends were over at the same time, so they were having their own conversations at the same time. Despite these distractions, I feel that our interview was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 53. Maternal Age and Down Syndrome Essay The Influence of Maternal Age on Down syndrome Children born to older parents are at greater risk for genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome. No one knows what causes the chromosomal abnormality that results in Down syndrome, a condition according to the National Association for Down syndrome, affects one in 800 to 1,000 babies in the United States. Any woman regardless of her culture, race and socio–economic status can have a baby with Down syndrome. However, a mother' age seems to be a unifying factor among children with Down syndrome. Older women have a greater chance of giving birth to a baby with Down syndrome, and the risks increases with every passing year. The National Association for Down syndrome estimates the chance of ... John Langdon Down, the scientist for which Down syndrome is named after (left) and Dr. Jerome Lejeune, who correctly identified Down syndrome as a chromosomal abnormality, not a condition based on one's race (right) (Photos courtesy of The Museum of Disability). By the 20th century, Down syndrome had not been identified as a genetic condition caused by an extra chromosome. Instead, Down syndrome was the most recognizable form of mental disabilities because of the distinctive facial features associated with the disease. Those who suffered form the condition were institutionalized and died in infancy or early adult life since their medical problems were not properly treated. Due to the rise of the eugenics movement in the United States, 33 of the 48 states approved forced sterilization of individuals with Down syndrome and other disabilities. Examples of Sterilization laws passed in Indiana (right) and California (left) who believed that those with a mental disability such as Down syndrome would harm society. However, the first scientist to assume that Down syndrome was actually a genetic disorder was Jerome Lejeune in 1959. People tend to jump to conclusions when they see somebody with a disorder. They tend to believe they are incapable of being an active member of society or even incompetent of simple tasks. These are common beliefs when people see people with down syndrome, which are false statements. People with down syndrome are just as capable as people without it. There are many successful people who have down syndrome. Some famous and successful people are: Lauren Potter, a known actress from the T.V series Glee, Angela Bachiller, the first elected councilwoman, Melissa Reilly, a gold medal winner for skiing, swimming and cycling, Sujeet Desai, who plays seven instruments, won numerous awards for music, had a 4.3 average throughout postsecondary school and graduated from Berkshire Hills Music Academy and Pablo Pineda, a writer, speaker, actor (with award for best actor of 2009) and has a bachelor's degree in educational psychology. • 57. Down Syndrome Essay Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition related to chromosome 21. It affects 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000 born infants. People who have Down Syndrome have learning difficulties, mental retardation, a different facial appearance, and poor muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy. Individuals with Down Syndrome also have an increased risk for having heart defects, digestive problems such as "gastroesophageal reflux or celiac disease", and hearing loss. Some people who have Down Syndrome have "low activity of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)" – an organ in the lower neck that produces hormones. Down Syndrome can be diagnosed in infancy based on the characteristic medical findings. When Down Syndrome is assumed in a person, a genetic test called a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When there is a heart defect currently in an infant with Down syndrome, the infant is referred to a "pediatric cardiologist" for medical attention or to a "pediatric cardiac surgeon for early surgical repair." Some infants with Down Syndrome have difficulties with swallowing or they may have blockages in their bowels. Surgery can be performed to correct these problems. After they are corrected, they usually cause no further health issues. Children with Down syndrome may have "frequent colds and sinus and ear infections." These are treated early and aggressively to prevent hearing loss and chronic infections. Low thyroid levels are more common in infants who have Down syndrome. It is recommended that "thyroid level testing" be performed at least yearly. Some infants with Down syndrome have eye problems such as cataracts (cloudy lenses) or crossed eyes (strabismus). Surgery can help with these problems. Sucking problems related to low muscle tone or heart problems may make breast feeding difficult to begin with. "Occupational therapists, speech therapists, breast feeding consultants and support groups usually have exact sources for the mothers of infants with Down syndrome." Intelligence in individuals with Down syndrome ranges from low normal to very slow to learn. At birth it is not possible to tell the level of intelligence a baby with Down syndrome will have. • 59. Analysis Of Dumbing Us Down John Taylor Gatto In "Dumbing Us Down: Weapons of Mass Instruction", John Taylor Gatto explores the concepts of education and the path to finding one's true self. Personal experiences of Gatto as a junior high school teacher in the public school system for thirty years demonstrate that the modern education system emphasizes memorization, standardized testing, and activities to kill time rather than promote individual thought. Although the public school system fails to properly teach, Gatto states that it is still possible for this generation to actually learn if we simply take the time to learn how to learn. In comparison to his teaching experience, Gatto discusses his own classical education. His education in Monongahela, Pennsylvania was shaped by hands on experience, where books were used as a means to satisfy curiosity and aid thinking rather than a piece of work to ... After his teaching career, he set out to investigate what caused our education system to take the shape it had and what we could do to fix it. Public opposition to the current methods of schooling and refusal of standardized testing are a couple of the solutions Gatto advocates. In addition, we must stop being afraid, take responsibility for our own education, and "learn to master valuable skills and put them on offer to the world at large" (549). Although Gatto's argument is one that has validity, I believe the education system could improve with better use of standardized testing, teaching students how to learn based on their learning types, and exposing students to real life situations that could help them better their ... • 61. Children With Disabilities And Disabilities Essay Disability is not inability is a common phrase many people understand today. In this regard, many have accepted that the people with disabilities have capacity to undertake some duties just like the other people, which can be seen in the increasing number of people with disabilities in institutions of higher learning as well as many working places. There are different forms of disabilities, some visible and others invisible. Although people with disabilities are incorporated in the general working environments as well as institutions of higher learning among other places, many are still facing many challenges while interacting and living out their daily lives. Some organizations accept people with disabilities since it is a legal requirement not that they are willing to do so. In this regard, public policy has established some measures that can protect individuals with disabilities. Still, this exposes people with disabilities to barriers, stigmatization, and prejudice among other forms of challenges. As such, it is possible to see many people with disabilities (e.g. visible: wheelchair bond or with cane and invisible: mental health or learning disabilities) are being socially and culturally affected by the general population's perspective on them. This paper discusses stigmas, barriers, prejudices, and discrimination as the major difficulties that people with disabilities face in college and in the workplace along with policies and procedures are not being properly ... • 63. The Effects Of Language On The Development Of A Child The acquisition of language is essential to the development of a child. Though some children are born genetically mutated, specifically children with Down's syndrome, the capabilities of acquiring language during developmental markers is far less than a child with just 21 chromosomes. Parents and/or guardians of infants and toddlers with Down's syndrome believe that their child will one day be able to verbally communicate with them. They presume the possibility, but does research support their beliefs? For the purpose of this paper, the child from infancy through three–years old will be discussed in regards to the developmental domain that are affected by Down's syndrome. The undeniable assumption is if an institution provides early intervention for an infant or toddler with Down's syndrome, then that child's social–emotional and language will be affected. About 80% of individuals with Down syndrome have moderate intellectual disability, although some have severe intellectual disability and others have IQ scores in the average range (Pueschel, 1995; Roizen, 2007). The first of two developmental domains that are affected by Down's syndrome is a child's cognitive development. According to Piaget, the leading view of cognition in young children was that it was constructed through interactions with their environment. This approach held up for several decades until a few theorists who derived from Vygotskian methods challenged Piaget and established that young children build ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Society´s Problem with Down Syndrome On September 10, 2011, Gilberto Powell, a Down syndrome man, was walking home from his friend's house, less than one block away from his own home, when he was stopped by two Miami– Dade police officers. The officers had stopped him due to their suspicion that Powell had a weapon on him. What the two officers believed to be a weapon was simply a colostomy bag that Gilberto wore on his waist. The officers tried to do a pat–down search of the 22–year–old man. Gilberto became frightened by the two officers and pushed off the car in an attempt to flee to his home. Police say that they gave multiple commands for him to stop moving, when he fell on the ground and hit his head. He still tried to escape by hitting one of the officers in the chest. The officer then struck Gilberto in the face with an open hand in an attempt to subdue him. He was then handcuffed. The officers then forcibly removed the colostomy bag. This event makes many people wonder if officers would act with excessive force if an innocent citizen were under suspicion for some sort of crime. This leads into the controversy of whether or not officers should be held responsible for what they have done. The argument for the police officers is that they are simply doing what they were trained to do. To act fast and resolve a problem quickly is the way they learned how to deal with a problem. Proponents for the victims of these cases believe that officers should be able to identify the signs of a person with special ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At one point she implemented a penmanship program in her class, teaching her students to make certain shapes, those which are used in the writing of letters and numbers in a repetitious manner, to the rhythm of specially composed music. • 71. Language Shapes Our Society 's Communication And Thoughts Language shapes our society's communication and thoughts in more ways than one. It is constantly evolving, which is why it is important to be mindful of what is said anywhere one may be. Words that may not typically offend one person may be hurtful to someone else. Many of the people that are most forgotten about are those with disabilities, minor or severe. Since person first language has been defined, it has given a voice and boosted the self–esteem to many of those that society often forgets. Through time we have come to understand that "Person–First Language" is important for the equality and acceptance of people with disabilities. Throughout history, people with disabilities have always been victimized. The bible tells many tales of people who were disabled. In these stories, they were referred to as "crippled" (Charles 31). The stereotype of disability has evolved from people being referred to as "crippled" to "Disreputables", which were people used as entertainment in the middle ages (Charles 34), then to "Waste Humanity", which were people that were sterilized and killed because they were deemed unfit to live in the mid 1900s (Charles 38–39). This gives insight to the evolution of a problem that is just recently being addressed. Today, calling people crippled, disreputables, and waste humanity is considered dehumanizing. Trisomy 21 is a disorder that is also considered a chromosomal abnormality because it has an extra chromosome added. This causes the abnormality to have Down syndrome. Like in most cases of Down syndrome are not inherited. When the condition is caused by trisomy 21, the chromosomal abnormality occurs as a random event during the formation of reproduction cells in a parent. The abnormality usually occurs in egg cells, but it occasionally occurs in sperm cells. E. is it an autosome or sex linked? Explain your answer. Answer: out of 46 chromosomes, 44 are autosomal. The remaining 2 chromosomes are sex chromosomes. Chromosomal disorder Down syndrome/ trisomy 21: having an extra chromosome for the 21st pair causes Down syndrome. This here would be sex linked because your sex chromosomes are the ones who determine if you are to have the disorder. Also because your parents are the ones who are passing their chromosomes and those sex chromosomes are what makes you. F. what specifically causes the disorder or disease? Describe what happens to which gene. Answer: The most common form of Down syndrome is known as Trisomy 21, a condition where individuals have 47 chromosomes in each cell instead of 46. This is caused by an error in cell division called nondisjunction, which leaves a sperm or egg cell with an extra copy of chromosome 21 before or at conception.
