Smile And Laughter During Bereavement
In another study that examined another coping technique, Keltner and Bonanno (1997), related
measures of bereaved adults' smiling and laughter, six months postloss, to their level of functioning
and social interaction. Keltner and Bonanno (1997) believed the influence of laughter during
bereavement would create a dissociation from the distress and improve that individual's social
functioning, which was addressed through several questions. First, was whether or not laughter is
related to the dissociation from the distressful situation and the improved social relationships.
Second, does the distinction between different types of smiles and laughter have an effect on social
perception. Third, is laughter related to a different process than smiling. The results indicated that

Specifically, Duchenne laugher was related with more positive emotions from observers and
observers' judgments (Keltner & Bonanno, 1997). In addition, while their results were not
conclusive when asking if laughter and smiling are related to different processes, Keltner and
Bonanno (1997) believed that they may be related to different processes. The overarching results of
the study suggested that different types of laughter should be investigated more thoroughly in future
studies, and that laughter can significantly improve functioning during times of distress.
Unfortunately, the harsh reality of death is unavoidable, as it is a major part of life because nearly all
individuals, at some point in their life, will lose a loved one. Views and perceptions about this reality
tend to change throughout the lifetime, as emerging adults have been identified as the least likely
age group to talk about death. Since emerging adults are the most uncomfortable with death, it is
reasonable to assume they are also uncomfortable dealing with the loss of a close friend, relative, or
immediate family member. Therefore, as death is

Literature: The Use Of Emotion In On Sublimity And Republic
The use of emotion in literature is regarded very different by Longinus in "On Sublimity" and Plato
in "Republic". Both recognize the power literature and emotion can have, but their arguments vary
drastically. Plato is interested in literature as a teaching tool and therefore favors self–discipline and
regulation over emotion. Longinus focuses on the more aesthetic quality of sublimity in literature,
and shows how emotion can be used to create that sublimity. Because emotion plays a central role in
both discourses, through the analysis of emotion we can see the differences of intent in Plato and
Longinus more clearly, while also understanding how emotion is used as a tool for both beauty and
learning.
Plato's idea of emotion is tied directly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When describing "Some Marks of True Sublimity" Longinus states that the feeling of "joy and
pride" is a mark of sublimity, and that which "please[s] everybody all of the time" is another way to
categorize "what is genuinely and finely sublime" (138). Emotion is the second of five sources of
sublimity, and Longinus considers it to be most productive and, along with the power to conceive
great thoughts, mostly natural (138). He argues that some emotions, such as "pity, grief, and fear"
are not usually associated with the sublime, and thus, his focus is on pleasure, love, astonishment,
and joy (139). Although emotion is a not a necessity of the sublime, as in academia or in orations,
Longinus says there is "nothing so productive of grandeur as noble emotion in the right place"
(139). In many examples that Longinus gives of sublimity, emotion is a driving force. For instance,
when speaking on amplification, he includes the "build–up...of emotion" as a particular way to
achieve sublimity. He commends Homer for being able to incite fear and awe through verse, as the
words perfectly "correspond to the emotion of the moment" (141). This is an interesting argument,
as it seems that Longinus is less interested in the actual fear itself, than the appropriate selection of
words that fit with the emotion of a scene. However, the effect is of intense emotion, which incites
sublimity. Another example he draws upon is

Depression and sadness can be a very tough emotion to deal with. However laughing and depression

because it is very adverse for our health. Therefore, we will try to be upbeat so we can stay healthy.
Laughing brings a lot of benefits. Laughter relaxes our body physically and mentally. Laughing
relaxes the muscles in our body and it helps relieve stress. Laughter boosts the immune system by
increasing immune cells, which helps fight disease. Because of this, laughing makes us more
resistant to diseases. When we laugh, we release endorphins. Endorphin is our body's chemical that
makes us feel superb. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works
faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. (Smith,
Melinda, Segal, Laughter is the best medicine, Par. 2) Sadness and laughter are opposites. Since
laughter is a form of happiness, it is a powerful counter to sadness. It is physically impossible for a
human to be happy and sad at the same time. Research shows the human brain cannot be happy and

Irony In Catch 22
17. In Joseph Heller's novel Catch–22, the horrors of World War II are brought to the forefront.
Catch–22 is a black comedy novel, focusing on how people who fight in war, can continue with
their lives despite facing death daily. Several characters throughout the novel cope with the war in
humorous ways, including Milo Minderbinder. Milo Minderbinder starts his own company, in order
to make a profit during the war. Another character, Doc Daneeka, hates flying missions, so he pays
people to list him on the flying list but does not actually fly. Throughout Catch–22, the use of ironic
laughter explores how both Milo Minderbinder and Doc Daneeka are able to cope with the harsh
realities of war.

Roethkes Use of Tone Essay
Roethke's Use of Tone
Childhood experiences seem to be the ones that are recollected most vividly throughout a person's
life. Almost everyone can remember some aspect of his or her childhood experiences, pleasant and
unpleasant alike. Theodore Roethke's poem "My Papa's Waltz" suggests even further that this
concept could be true. The dance described in this poem illustrates an interaction between father and
child that contains more than the expected joyous, loving attitude between the two characters.
Roethke's tone in this work exhibits the blended, yet powerful emotions that he, as a grown man,
feels when looking back on this childhood experience. The author somewhat implicates feelings of
resentment fused with a loving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This stanza also provides the reader with the feeling of how aggressive this dance may be. Roethke
is apparently referring to his father's belt buckle in the last line of the third stanza. During an
aggressive act such as this, a small child would experience pain from such a man's belt buckle
"scraping" across his ear in this fashion, yet the child refrains from any type of resistance. Perhaps
this is caused by the child's fear that his father will become angry, so the child simply endures the
pain and tries to enjoy the moment, for he may also feel love and attention that he may not receive
regularly from his father.
Bridges 3 John J. McKenna offers us further suggestions about the feelings suggested in this poem.
In McKenna's article, two of the holograph manuscripts to "My Papa's Waltz" are discussed.
McKenna implies that the changes made between these manuscripts are further evidence that this
poem shows mixed emotions through the tone that Roethke utilizes. These holograph manuscripts
are labeled "MS–A" and "MS–B" at the University of Washington where they are contained in the
archives. The first of these changes discussed in McKenna's article is the gender of the child in the
poem. He discusses how Roethke seemed to argue with himself about what the sex of the child
should be, but finally chooses male for a few different reasons. "It seems plausible that he did
recognize the rough–house nature of

Lucille Clifton Forgiving My Father
Being a father is a thankless job; it is a heavy responsibility for those who hold the title. There are
some fathers who fail their children through abuse, neglect, and absence. Theodore Roethke's
"Papa's Waltz" recounts a night the speaker's father returns home late after drinking. What happens
next can be interpreted as violence or merriment. Lucille Clifton's "Forgiving my Father" is a visit to
the grave where the child of two deceased parents "pays her dues". The relationship between father
and child in "Forgiving my Father" by Clinton is more positive than that in Roethke's "My Papa's
Waltz" allowing for a more loving speaker. If there is to be a comparison of relationships between
father and child, then the fathers of the speakers from Clinton and Roethke's poems, respectively,
must be weighed on the same scale. Defining the duty of a patriarchal figure presents a starting point
to effectively determine the positive or negative effects either "father" may ensue. A father provides
for his family. The duty should come before all else in his life. A father should go to work and come
home every night. He (father) should also spend as much time as possible with his child(ren). "You
gave her all you had" (Clinton line 14) Clinton supports the notion that being a parent means
keeping nothing themselves so long as the children are in need. Any money or utilities should be
used to improve the living conditions of the family and the chances of the prosperity of the
offspring.

The Fall By Albert Camus
Albert Camus's absurdist novel The Fall deals with many overarching themes: justice, guilt,
judgment, freedom, and power. One of the more understated themes is that of punishment, as Jean–
Baptiste Clamence is never formally punished. And yet, though the law does not condemn him, he
still finds himself plagued by guilt and fear of judgment even after he claims to have found a
solution. Camus shows, through symbolism and Clamence's own narration, that the lack of
punishment is a burden for Clamence in his supposedly happy life. While speaking to his companion
of his new lifestyle in Amsterdam, Jean–Baptiste Clamence proclaims that he has "discovered the
secrets of the good life" (Camus 144). He even insists, repeatedly, that he is happy, "happy unto
death" (144). And yet Camus sprinkles hints all over the pages that this is not ... Show more content

Water is inextricably tied to his guilt: the suicidal woman he fails to save drowns in a canal (70), and
it is from the water that he first hears the condemning laughter (39). Before he ever mentions the
woman Clamence didn't save, Camus connects water with death, as Clamence comments on the
"breath of stagnant waters, the smell of dead leaves soaking in the canal and the funereal scent rising
from the barges loaded with flowers" (43). The water represents his guilt and his crimes, and yet,
rather than escaping it, Clamence moves to a city of canals where he is constantly surrounded by
water. This is not because the water doesn't affect him any longer; on the contrary, he still fears to
cross bridges at night (15) and he admits that he forces himself to admire the canals (43). He
outright acknowledges that the cry of the suicidal woman would "continue to await me on seas and
rivers, everywhere, in short, where lies the bitter waters of my baptism" (108). Thus, in surrounding
himself by water, Clamence is sure never to be free of the torment of his

Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of
laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians
like Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not
archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic
elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing
specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I
will discuss how humor impacts the implicit meaning of the film.

dire need of the antidote. The nightclub singer and leading actress of the film, Willie, has her eyes
fixated on an enormous dazzling diamond. In a turn of events, both the diamond and the antidote fall
into the enemy's hands. A gun goes off and in the brawl that ensues, both prized possessions fall to
the ground. The nightclub attendees chaotically scramble, causing the diamond and antidote to be
tossed around the floor. Both protagonists frantically jump to the ground, but Willie prioritizes the
diamond, leaving Indy, who is on the verge of death, to desperately fight his foes and find his
antidote. In a comedic manner, the respective items keep slipping from the grasp of the desperate
duo. Willie comes in close range of the diamond before a bucket of ice cubes tips over and
surrounds the diamond, much to the amusement of the audience! The scene humorously plays out a
situation of life–and–death, which in reality is a somber circumstance. This is a clever use of relief

The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian Analysis
Part–Time Indian, Full–Time Coping The Absolutely True Diary of a Part–Time Indian by Sherman
Alexie reveals the story of a Spokane tribal member named Junior through his struggle to find
success a life laden with adversities. Though each struggle seems unimaginable, especially
collectively, Junior always finds a way to cope in order to survive. While these coping methods
range anywhere from not caring, laughing, and establishing a false identity, it is undeniable that
Junior never runs away from his problems. In a world where everything is stacked against him, he
always finds a way to cope with them in order to survive. To begin, one method which Junior uses to
cope with his problems can be seen extremely early in the novel, when he consciously decides to not
care about what others think. For many reasons, Junior is perceived as an outcast on the reservation,
especially for his early health and sensitivity; however, above everything, Junior possessesd a
unique hunger to learn. For these reasons, Junior learns that sometimes, the easiest way to cope is to
not care. This approach proves effective for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Although his laughter may seem ironic, it helps him to deal with extremely grim events, especially
the many deaths he witnesses, including his sister, his dad's best friend, and his grandmother.
Through Junior's laughter, the reader's attention is drawn to the large losses due to alcohol that he
and his family witness on the reservation. After the death of his grandmother, he comments that his
tribe thinks that "...laughter and tears are pretty much the same thing" (Alexie 166). For Junior and
his tribe, laughter and tears help to cope with the dire loss they experience, often due to alcohol.

An Extravagance Of Laughter By Ralph Ellison
What is laughter? What is the role that laughter plays in society? Laughter is the "physiological
response to humor." It is what triggers the body's release of endorphins or the feel good chemicals. It
is what can heal us from pain. From sorrow. From stress. No matter the magnitude of any situation,
laughter will always heal an individual to an extent. The concept that causes laughter is humor:
something that an individual that finds amusing or comic. What is unique about humor is that no one
individual has the exact sense of humor as another individual. No matter how similar an individuals
sense of humor might be to another individuals, they are different, even if it be in the smallest way
possible. Ralph Ellison's "Extravagance of Laughter," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Ellison, the policemen stopped a carload of students traveling on the forty mile route
that passed through Phenix City and began to question them– Whyte in particular. A violent
persecution of Whyte ensued due to his race combined with his "offensive surname" ultimately
resulting in a beating. I In addition to describing the incident as "over–exaggerated" and "nasty",
Ellison acknowledged the role that laughter played after listening to the story (273). By expressing ,
"thus was violence transcended with cruel but homeopathic laugher, and racial cruelty transformed
by a traditional form of folk art," Ellison reveals how the exaggeration involved in the recitation
made the story more tolerant, ultimately allowing him to laugh, despite how brutal the incident was
(273). It allowed Ellison to forget about the racial cruelty and instead allowed him to laugh about
how outrageous the exaggeration was. Upon their return to Tuskegee, the students continued to
laugh about their encounters with the cops. Comically recounting, "we mocked their modes of
speech and styles of intimidation, and teased one another," the students used laughter as well as the
incident with the police as means of bonding, thus revealing their combined tolerance of the
situation (273). By recognizing how comical the situation was, the students highlight the sense of
unity they developed through

Analysis Of Aboard The Pequod By Herman Melville
Aboard the Pequod, as the ship is bustling with activity, Melville describes the scene as the crew
performs the grueling task of processing a whale. Large, bubbling try–pots of oil blubber fill the
deck of the ship and a heavy smoke blankets the air as harpooners and sailors work regardless of the
conditions. Through this familiar scene, Melville layers the setting and characters to build up a
distinct mood for this passage. Specifically, he pulls dark romanticism into his writing by paralleling
Ahab's monomania and the deterioration of the crew. To establish an ominous atmosphere and
describe the impending doom of the voyage, Herman Melville combines many forms of figurative
language like sinister similes and the eerie personification of the Pequod with suspenseful imagery.
Melville utilizes similes in order to build suspense and emphatically compare evil laughter with
rising flames. The laughter and flames are unpredictable and fill the ship with noise and unbearable
heat, almost engulfing it. In the passage, he compares the two ideas by stating, "as their uncivilized
laughter forked upwards out of them, like the flames from the furnace." Melville connects the
menacing behavior of the crew and maniacal laughter to Ahab, as he also exhibits behavior that is
erratic and fills the ship with his plans of revenge. Since he also describes the laughter as "forked
out of them," it seems as though the sailors are not willingly laughing, but are forced in doing so.
Ahab undoubtedly

evade death and reality always catches up to them. However, everyone has their own methods of
subduing the weight of the inevitable loss within our lifetimes. Within George Bernard Shaw's letter

ominous to light–hearted and nostalgic using key details, imagery, and diction in order to convey his

details. Shaw provides an ominous–esque tone in the beginning of the excerpt where he illustrates

The Modes of Laughter
Modes of Laughter There are a plethora of ways in which the prudent reader can discern the
elements of modern laughter as noted within Daniel Grojnowski's Aux commencements du rire
modern when analyzing Marcel Pagnol's My Father's Glory, Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi, and Eugene
Ionesco's The Bald Soprano. Virtually all three of these works celebrate an irreverence that
unabashedly admits them into the School of the Absurd, although Ionesco's is probably the least
ridiculous. Still, it would be difficult to contend with the fact that laughter is the aim of all of these
pieces of literature. Although Grojnowski has described five different modes of producing laughter
within Aux commencements du rire modern, these three works focus primarily on humor and
nonsense, the latter of which inevitably leads to the undecidable. One of the key aspects of humor is
that it is oftentimes bitter sweet. Elements of humor are intrinsically linked with those of sadness. Of
the two forms of humor that Grojnowski discusses within the aforementioned document, the one
that is most prevalent within Pagnol's work is that in which moments of levity punctuate themes and
things that are otherwise soberly serious and, for the most part, sad. Although My Father's Glory is
the least absurd of the three works discussed within this essay, there is a finite degree of irreverence
contained within this memoir because there is effectively no plot. The manuscript simply exists as a
series of anecdotes, all which

Yellow Star DBQ Essay
World War Two, a time of gore, the type of war, humanity can't stand or bear to imagine! This was a
time where six million Jews were sent to their deaths. The war, known as the Holocaust, lasted from
1939–1945. Yet, the question asked by all, how does the spirit triumph? Our spirit's triumph by these

We may sometimes express it in the funniest ways. In the book Yellow Star, a little girl named Syvia

Patch Adams : Movie Analysis : Laughter Is The Best Medicine
Tierra Johnson

ENGL 101.22
31 October 2017
Laughter is the Best Medicine "Laugh my friend, for laughter ignites a fire within the pit of your
belly and awakens your being." Stella and Blake. The film Patch Adams directed by Tom Shady is a
fact–based biography and comedy based on a physician named Hunter "Patch" Adams. The film was
produced in 1998 in Asheville, North Carolina. Patch Adams is the main character who believed that
doctors should incorporate happiness and laughter when taking care of sick patients. He believes
happiness and laughter is the best medicine because joy is a gift from the holy spirit. This film is an
eye opener to the audience, especially people who are studying to work in the medical field. After
watching this film, the intended audience would agree that doctors who use Patch Adams theory,
laughter is the best medicine for ill patients will provide a better health care system, and cause the
patients to enjoy and have a better perception of life.
The theme of the movie is laughter is the best medicine because joy will always cure the soul. The
movie started off with the main character Patch Adams admitting himself into a mental hospital.
Being in the mental hospital he came upon a rude psychiatrist that didn't care to help or listen to the
patients. This made him realize he wanted to go to medical school and properly help, care and treat
patients. Patch released himself from the Mental facility and went to Virginia Medical College. One
part in the movie that makes you understand the theme is when Patch Adams dresses up as an angel
which symbolizes spiritual figures. Patch Adams was determined to become a medical doctor once
he started visiting patients in the Medical school clinical hours. This made him truly passionate
about helping people. Patch Adams believed the medical staff did not appreciate the methods of
healing patients as much as they should, they care about the money instead. He cheers the patients
up by making light out of the idea of death. He dressed up as a clown for the children who had
cancer, asked patients what they wanted to do before they pass away, and he tried to make their
wishes come true.
Although, he had the hospital nurses and patients on his

Is the Ending of the Wall by Jean Paul Sartre Ironic? Essay
In "The Wall," Jean–Paul Sartre uses many literary techniques to convey irony. Jean–Paul Sartre, an
existentialistic writer, states through his characters and symbolism that life has no value. Through
Pablo's decision to "trade' his life, Sartre furthers the irony in the story. Symbolism provides authors
with a way to convey an underlying theme or to portray the meaning in an event without explicitly
outlining the incident. Sartre employs the symbol of a graveyard to express meaninglessness and
nothingness. Emotions can express more than a character's feeling at a particular moment, they can
also set a tone for a whole story. The conclusion of laughter brings another example of irony through
its contradictory nature to the tone at the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is a mystery that he will never solve. Death now seems meaningless because he has become
uninterested in life. He had wrestled with the idea of death all night, sweating, turning grey, pissing
himself, only to finally realize that since life has no meaning, death has no meaning and any effort
that he might make from the moment he exchanges his life will be ineffectual. Pablo does not
believe that Ramon Gris is hiding in the graveyard, but pretends to concede to the Facists that he
believes that Gris can be found "in a vault or a gravedigger's shack (243)". Sartre applies the
graveyard to symbolize non–existence. Sartre was an existentialist: questioning why we exist and
denying the existence of God. This belief dictates that there is nothing after death and that
everything about our being disintegrates into oblivion when we die, our thoughts and emotions fades
away into the abyss so we have no thoughts when we die. The inquisitors prey upon thoughts by
using mental torture and threats of death to get people to question if their life has any meaning in

Lyric Analysis
The song Master of Puppets by Metallica is about addiction to alcohol and drugs. This is apparent
from several lines in the song, such as: "Taste me you will see/More is all you need/Dedicated
to/How I'm killing you" and "Chop your breakfast on a mirror," referencing cocaine use, and the
chorus "Come crawling faster/Obey your master/Your life burns faster/Obey your master" support
this. The song portrays substance abuse in a negative way, especially evident in lines such as the
chorus and "Taste me you will see/More is all you need/Dedicated to/How I'm killing you."
The line "End of passion play/Crumbling away/I 'm your source of self–destruction" describes the
user starting to become numb to the high of his substance, while "Veins that ... Show more content

The chorus is repeated one more time, either to drive home the point, or for catchiness, and the song

The Poetry Of Pablo Neruda
Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, also known as Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904 in a
small town in Chile. Neruda's mother died shortly after his birth, leaving him in the care of his
father. Neruda began to write at the age of ten. Gabriela Mistral, who would later become a Nobel
Prize winner, recognized Neruda's talents by giving him books and encouragement he did not have
at home. In his early teen years, he began to publish his writings under the name of what we know
as "Pablo Neruda" in memory of the Czechoslovak poet, Jan Neruda, but also to avoid his father's
disapproval of Neruda's interests in literature. This essay will analyze Neruda's life and how it may
have influenced his style, tone and other literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of Garcia Lorca's death, Neruda joined the Republican movement, starting off in Spain then
in France, Neruda worked on a collection of poems called España en el Corazón, or, Spain in our
Hearts. When these poems were written, Neruda seemed to be in a very difficult place and it seemed
like he would be for a very long time. For example, his poem, Cursed states, "Bring, bring the lamp,
see the soaked earth, see the blackened little bone eaten by the flames, the garment of murdered
Spain." Just by that excerpt, you can tell that the tone of this poem is very dark. In fact, the majority
of Neruda's poems in this book seemed as if they all had the same tone; gloomy and pessimistic. His
poems reflected this tone from the 1940's and onward, showing the political struggle in South
America. This does show that life experiences can really affect the way that poets write. A
disheartening event can lead a poet to write very depressing poems, and vice versa. Even though
Neruda wrote a lot about the political struggle, he also wrote a lot of poems about love, such as,
Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. One love poem that he wrote, Your Laughter, was
intriguing. The poem reveals how the person in the poem is obviously struggling in life. But, the
laughter of their significant other's motivates them to keep driving through whatever darkness they
are going through, and keeps them happy as well. A small excerpt of the poem states, "My struggle

Descriptive Essay On A Day
It was a hot summer night on July 5th I remember it was a day after the fourth of July. Arianna sent
me a text asking to come over because she was bored and she complained how she hasn't seen me in
two days. Meanwhile i asked my mom if she could come over and stay the night. My mom was
concerned because it was about eight fifty at night, but she didn't ask any questions she just picked
up her keys and hooked the dog to her leash and told me to tell Arianna we were on our way.
Arianna only lives two blocks away from me, and my mom didn't mind her coming over because its
not a long drive. When we pulled up to Arianna's house she was sitting on her porch. Her hair was in
a messy bun while she was wearing a baggy shirt and sweatpants. All i could do was laugh at her
and think to myself "Thats my best friend alright". When we were diving to my house she was
thanking my mom for letting her stay with us and then all the sudden we hit a bump and her sweet
tea bottle hits me in the face and spills all over me. My mom and Ari laughed at me all the way
home, then my dog licked all the sweet tea off of me, it was so sticky and hot and it was very gross
but at least i smelled good. After all that chaos we pulled in my gravel driveway and me and Ari's
favorite song came on the radio "Thats My Kind Of Night" so my mom left the keys in the car and
we sang as loud as we could. Later that night It was about midnight and we were in my living room

The Pros And Cons Of Fast Food Restaurants
The three friends Steben, Derrick, and Gunther Blackwell all knew that they were in trouble. They
prank called all of the fast food restaurants in town. The three acquaintances called Arby's
McDonald's and every other fast food place they could think of. "Can I get uhhhhh boneless ice
cube with a side of salt and a two liter Coke." said Steben holding in all of the laughter.
"Sir, we do not serve boneless ice, but you can order from the Mc Pick 2 menu for only $5!"
explained Jeff, the McDonald's worker.
"No thank you, but my friend would like to have an order of Two chicken sandwiches and a fidget
spinner for the toy on the side." he chuckled.
"Sir, we also do not serve chicken sandwiches and we do not have fidget spinners!" he grumbled
with a deep sigh afterwards.
"Ok, I will have two number nines and a number nine large with a chilli dog on the side and a hog
rider toy at the end." said Steben with a red face just barely holding in all of his laughter.
"You know what, I quit this job!" ,he squealed, " I am also going to track this number down and get
the police on you immature and childish kids!"
Jeff could hear them all burst out laughing and he was outraged. He went ballistic after hearing them
all laugh. He felt as if he was in the African savannah with a Cackle of hyenas.
The three friends quickly hung up the phone letting out all of the laughter they had built up from the
prank call. Steben could not believe what they had just done. He was dying of laughter

Humor, Humor And Laughter
"The term humor can refer to a stimulus, which is intended to produce a humorous response (such as
a humorous video), a mental process (perception of amusing incongruities) or a response (laughter,
exhilaration)." (11) Laughter is the most common reaction to humor. (11) Both humor and laughter
can be valuable assets in the medical field. Medical staff can use humor to make unpleasant routines
easier for the patient, to form a positive relationship with the patient, (1) and to gain cooperation in
treatments.(5) Humor can also help a doctor connect with his patients. When a patient feels
connected with the doctor, they are more likely to follow the doctors' advice, thereby increasing
their chances of being cured. (4) Patients can also take advantage of humor in order to get more
personal attention from medical staff, vent their complaints (1) and frustration, and to relieve
anxiety, insecurity, fear, and tension. (4) Humor is an important coping mechanism, (14) (10)(2)
specifically for cancer patients. It also improves self–esteem in patients. (10) Laughter rids a person
of the negative emotions such as panic and despair that may get in the way of the healing process.
(5) As well, cancer patients have reported that humor and laughter make them feel like they have an
active role in their recovery. (10) Norman Cousins used laughter to heal himself of ankylosing
spondylitis. He claimed that 10 minutes of laughter results in 2 hours of pain free sleep(4)(5), and a

Humor in the Halls of an Asylum in Ken Kesey's One Flew...
Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, portrays humor in a powerful, obvious form.
Usually, mentally–unstable people do not understand what it means to laugh and simple do not see
humor in the everyday things other high–functioning people do. Their lives, lived tragically, consist
of them wandering the cold bland hallways of the asylum. Forgetting how to live, they permit the
harsh watch of the head nurse. The patients seem lifeless because they do not comprehend what
"life" is. Since the good Lord works in good and strange ways, McMurphy arrives to help heal and
save them all. He cures them by giving them the best medicine possible– laughter. He gives back the
life to the much needed patients. At heart, becoming his sanctuary, allowing him to heal and escape
while at the same time, healing his fellow friends. This novel involves a mess of symbolism, thus
the issue in showing why laughter could be a key theme is vast. Look how many of the patients
"can't help it....they're tired(52 Kesey) when in reality they are sick of the life they are living. With
the aim of laughter as a healing agent, take a moment to look towards alternative influential writers
and thinkers to tie along happiness and healing. Meriden's dictionary says: laughter– n. a reason for
merriment. With this basic understanding of this, laughter seen as merriment or feeling like success,
hatred, liberation, and virtually the other feeling that can happen, it is straightforward to image in

What Is Mass Hysteria In The Crucible
Mass hysteria is a psychological behavior characterized by the outburst of emotions including,
anxiety, fears or beliefs, which typically affects groups of people. The outcome of this behavior
rarely leaves a positive effect on society thus causes a disastrous effect. As witnessed in Arthur
Miller's, The Crucible, mass hysteria forced the people of Salem to turn against each other and make
false accusations. These behaviors are very common as shown throughout other historical events.
The Crucible, The Dancing Plague of 1518, and The Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic all exploit mass
hysteria and prove catastrophic outcomes.
In the beginning of The Crucible, Abigail accuses Tituba of witchcraft. Even though she is innocent,
the rest of the girls participate in Abigail's lie and condemn Tituba of witchcraft. Tituba falsely
confesses to the crime, and the town views her as a saint. Abigail sees the chance of innocence and
confesses to witchcraft, along with the other girls. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, there are many more that concluded to similar results. The Dancing Plague of 1518 is one
of the many historical examples of mass hysteria. It all began with a woman who decided to
randomly dance in the streets of France. Later on, about 400 other people joined her and practically
danced themselves to death over the course of a month. Most of the victims died of heart attacks,
strokes or pure exhaustion. Next, is The Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic that began in 1962, in what
is now known as Tanzania, Africa. It is believed to have started with a single joke in school, which
caused a continuous fit of laughter to last months. The cause of this epidemic was most likely stress.
Mass hysteria took place in both of these situations because it all began from one source and grew as
people joined. Similar to the Salem witch trials, these events ended catastrophically creating

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Critical Analysis
There is at least one person in everyone's life who has helped them change. In the book One Flew
Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, McMurphy has an impact on the patients in the ward.
McMurphy stands out with his personality and has given the other patients the courage to become
non–conformists. McMurphy arrived at the mental hospital due to a court order from an incident
that happened at a work farm. The moment McMurphy stepped foot on the ward, all the other
patients knew that ¨[he was] no ordinary Admission¨ because of the way he carried himself (Kesey
11). McMurphy stunned everyone with his personality because he is a happy person who enjoys life
and laughs a lot. The first time McMurphy laughed "The Acutes look spooked and uneasy" because
no one in the ward had laughed in years (Kesey 19). Everyone in the ward was used to the lack of
laughter, so when McMurphy laughed it sparked a negative reaction from them since they hadn't
heard laughter in years. This was the first thing McMurphy noticed about the ward too, because later
he mentioned that ¨the first thing that got [him] about [the ward], [was] that there wasn't anybody
laughing" (Kesey 70). This was strange to him because he had never been in a mental hospital or a
place where no one laughs and and he considered laughing to be a symbol of freedom. Some might
even describe it as an inalienable right because no one should take that freedom away from another
person. Unfortunately, laughter was a right that was taken away from the patients due to medication
that made them zombie–like and the fear of being punished by the Big Nurse. The patients in the
ward were frightened of the Big Nurse because she could give them cruel punishments, such as a
lobotomy or electroshock therapy (ETS) whenever she pleased. She also had the power to decide
when the patients could leave the ward. As a result of this, no one in the ward "dared [to] come out
and [speak out]¨ against the Big Nurse until after McMurphy's arrival (Kesey 62). Unlike the other
patients, McMurphy was courageous enough to stand up to the Big Nurse numerous times. When
McMurphy was receiving electroshock therapy, he showed his courage by volunteering to receive
the treatment before Chief Bromden

Jonas In The Giver
"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've

Spirit Triumph Dbq
Holocaust Writings: How Does The Spirit Triumph? As humans, we are very limited physically and
mentally but our spirit has a vast room of possibilities. World War 2 has just given our world
untreatable wounds. The mass–murdering of six million Jewish people was called The Holocaust.
During that time, there were moments when they were weak but there were also scenarios where
they were strong in spirit. The Jews used Love, Laughter, and Nature to continue persevering against
the Nazis. The Jews used Love to strengthen their spirits. Love is a very strong force in this
universe. People tend to satisfy their love by any means possible. Syvia is a prime example. Syvia is
a fugitive that hid from the abduction of Jews and is hiding in Lodz Ghetto. She risked her life to get

Laughter is essential to our very existence. It can get you out of a bad day or out of a sad moment.
Syvia is a primary example. Syvia's family is in a situation where her mother has to give her portion
of her meal to Syvia. Her Dad explains that "From pain your mother gave you life, through pain she
continues to give (Doc A)." Syvia then goes on to "think" about her Dad's words. She unconsciously
says "It hurts Mama to give me life? Why? Didn't I just pop out of her belly button?"(Doc A) That
moment, the whole family laughed. All of a sudden, they forgot about the negativity around them
and continued with their day. You can see that laughter can pull people out of a negative moment.
Another instance that laughter brightened the situation is when the Hubermann had an extravagant

Humor In Hamlet
Hamlet is often perceived to be a tragedy even though most of the book revolves around death.
There is more to what the characters are indicating in the Shakespeare play. Hamlet often brings
thoughtful laughter throughout the play. Laughter is brought up in the play in times in which some
readers do not realize because of the way Hamlet proceeds with his thoughts throughout the play.
Shakespeare uses humor as a device to temporarily distract the audience away from the almost
relentless tragedy and dark plot turns that permeate the rest of the story. One of the most outstanding
characteristics of Hamlet is his subtle and persistent humor. It indicates the essential soundness of
his mind. If Hamlet did not really go mad under is unparalleled griefs and burdens it is because

touch of Hamlet's ironic and thoughtful humor. "I could accuse me of such things that it were better

conveys a message in which Hamlet uses tragedy to contribute into his thoughtful humor and is
more mentally active of a humorous state of mind. In conclusion, it is this exuberant humor that
reveals beyond doubt Hamlet's fundamental sanity. Shakespeare was too good a judge of character
and of human nature to mingle such humor with madness. He has given Hamlet nearly all varieties
of humor, from the playful for sarcasm. The play reveals that in Hamlet's mind he was mostly
sarcastic with his humor but was more thoughtful humor. Hamlet's thoughtful humor contributes the

Comparing Comedy And Comedy
Martin Esslin's definition of drama says that it incorporates a well–structured, economical and
unpredictable plot with no boundaries that entertains the audience and allows room for their own
interpretation. This is a basic definition. A vast variety of genres fall under the term drama. Two
forms that are most frequently talked about and compared are comedy and tragedy. Comedy and
tragedy shed light on differences in theatrical storytelling through their contrasting styles and
methods of presenting pieces of theatre. If genres of theatre were put on a spectrum, comedy would
fall on one end while tragedy would on the opposite. Comedy and tragedy are widely different. They
follow various contrasting dramatic constructs invoking the thoughts and emotions pertaining to
their genre.
A comedy is a piece of theatre that evokes a feel–good response from the audience and allows them
to gently discover an underlying truth about human nature. It breaks expectations and increases a
level of awareness invoking the involuntary biological response of laughter. Laughter places the
audience in a vulnerable state. Laughter is gasping for air with no way of stopping until the comedic
effect is no longer amusing. For this vulnerable state to take into effect, the audience must be willing
to go along with the joke that the story is attempting to convey. Once the trust has been built, and if
this it is a satisfactory production, the successful sound of laughter will commence.

the same nervous laughter as before, as if he had not the strength to control himself...After his

In an effort to perturb Zametov, Raskolnikov's character falters and his laughter serves to dissolve
the tension. However, on the verge of a confession, Raskolnikov does not know what he wants to

As he drifting toward the source of his throes, the audience initially believes he rings the bell out of
self–punishment. Ironically, however, he finds pleasure in the situation. The fact that Raskolnikov
enjoys the sensations that accompany the sound draws attention to his perspective towards his
crime. His trauma does not stem from the guilt attributed to a violation of civil or moral laws.
Instead, he views the murders as acts of justice and, therefore, considers the crime scene to be
admirable work. As the perpetrator, Raskolnikov sees the crime in its righteous beauty as well as its
callous, cruel nature. He considers himself to be above others and, for this reason, he pushes the
boundaries of his own security. Similar to the repeating bell noises, intrusive thoughts continue to
plague Raskolnikov and he cannot resist the impulse to invest in such ideas. While he is aware of his
circular reasoning, he does not take action to end them similar to how he cannot stop himself from

or it was so bad that you just had to read it or maybe it is because the writing was exemplary. There
may be an infinite amount of reasons but David Sedaris's "Journey Into the Night" definitely did not
get popular because it was mistake. This personal essay is about his night flight to Paris. During this
flight he recurs many past memories and feels many emotions such as boarding first which he
described as "a little embarassing" (1). This story starts off with Sedaris describing long night flights
as the feeling of being in a hospital. He tells us that they are only two classes on the airline which is

humor which adds to his popularity. For instance, as the story goes on he writes that he thought that
there was no need to do anything extra for him. He writes, "then they brought me a bowl of hot nuts

Oscar Wilde's The Importance Of Being Earnes
Oscar Wilde lived in an imperfect Victorian society, infamous for a brazen landed gentry that was
supposed to be the top of society. Instead, they were the epitome of undeserved wealth. In his

Victorian noble. He the travesty of Lady Bracknell as well as a compilation of stock characters,
euphemisms, and an almost constant witty repartee to create a comedic lens to establishes a

Jack initially states that he lost both of his parents, to which Bracknell replies, "To lose one parent,

establishes the serious subject of death with an immediate contradiction of this mood with
Bracknell's ignorant retort. The exchange further juxtaposes Worthing's grave tone with Bracknell's
indignant demeanor. After the revelation that Worthing was orphaned at a train station, their
discussion concludes with Bracknell's diagnosis of "a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family
life that reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution." Through Bracknell's
exaggerated and uppity high society demeanor, Wilde comments on the ignorance of the upper class
through her misinterpretation of Jack's familiar situation. The real jabs at the gentry, however, are in
the instances in which she judges Jack's character by his place of birth. The concept of heredity
defining character is a major component of the Victorian upper class who believed their position
granted them higher morals and greater piety. Wilde's subversion of this accepted belief is what

situation. It is displayed in the form of humor mixed with play to create paradoxical situations in the
book. For instance, the scene in which Aardvark rapes and kills a woman in chapter 39: "I only
raped her once explained Aarfy. I had to do that after I raped her" (Heller 418). Heller strategically
creates Aarfy to be a dispassionate individual. He shows no compassion or discomfort when
discussing the murder he just committed. He justifies his actions through selfish means. When
Yossarian confronted Aarfy about his actions his reaction is incongruent with the abomination that
he just committed. Any normal human being would have shown remorse for the life that was just
lost, not Aarfy. By utilizing aggression Heller is able to highlight the loss of sanity within characters
such as Aarfy. His mind has been desensitized to death and he no longer fears taking an innocent
civilian's life because he has distanced himself from pain and any emotional realm. This satirical
example of aggression also shows the flaws in law enforcement. When Yossarian expresses his
anger towards Aarfy and warns him about the fate that awaits him. Aarfy assures him that he will
not get in trouble. Yossarian is acting as a cautionary prophet in this piece. However, the snarling
twist is when Yossarian is the one who is arrested. In fact "they arrested Yossarian for being in Rome

  • 3. Smile And Laughter During Bereavement In another study that examined another coping technique, Keltner and Bonanno (1997), related measures of bereaved adults' smiling and laughter, six months postloss, to their level of functioning and social interaction. Keltner and Bonanno (1997) believed the influence of laughter during bereavement would create a dissociation from the distress and improve that individual's social functioning, which was addressed through several questions. First, was whether or not laughter is related to the dissociation from the distressful situation and the improved social relationships. Second, does the distinction between different types of smiles and laughter have an effect on social perception. Third, is laughter related to a different process than smiling. The results indicated that laughter did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specifically, Duchenne laugher was related with more positive emotions from observers and observers' judgments (Keltner & Bonanno, 1997). In addition, while their results were not conclusive when asking if laughter and smiling are related to different processes, Keltner and Bonanno (1997) believed that they may be related to different processes. The overarching results of the study suggested that different types of laughter should be investigated more thoroughly in future studies, and that laughter can significantly improve functioning during times of distress. Unfortunately, the harsh reality of death is unavoidable, as it is a major part of life because nearly all individuals, at some point in their life, will lose a loved one. Views and perceptions about this reality tend to change throughout the lifetime, as emerging adults have been identified as the least likely age group to talk about death. Since emerging adults are the most uncomfortable with death, it is reasonable to assume they are also uncomfortable dealing with the loss of a close friend, relative, or immediate family member. Therefore, as death is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Literature: The Use Of Emotion In On Sublimity And Republic The use of emotion in literature is regarded very different by Longinus in "On Sublimity" and Plato in "Republic". Both recognize the power literature and emotion can have, but their arguments vary drastically. Plato is interested in literature as a teaching tool and therefore favors self–discipline and regulation over emotion. Longinus focuses on the more aesthetic quality of sublimity in literature, and shows how emotion can be used to create that sublimity. Because emotion plays a central role in both discourses, through the analysis of emotion we can see the differences of intent in Plato and Longinus more clearly, while also understanding how emotion is used as a tool for both beauty and learning. Plato's idea of emotion is tied directly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When describing "Some Marks of True Sublimity" Longinus states that the feeling of "joy and pride" is a mark of sublimity, and that which "please[s] everybody all of the time" is another way to categorize "what is genuinely and finely sublime" (138). Emotion is the second of five sources of sublimity, and Longinus considers it to be most productive and, along with the power to conceive great thoughts, mostly natural (138). He argues that some emotions, such as "pity, grief, and fear" are not usually associated with the sublime, and thus, his focus is on pleasure, love, astonishment, and joy (139). Although emotion is a not a necessity of the sublime, as in academia or in orations, Longinus says there is "nothing so productive of grandeur as noble emotion in the right place" (139). In many examples that Longinus gives of sublimity, emotion is a driving force. For instance, when speaking on amplification, he includes the "build–up...of emotion" as a particular way to achieve sublimity. He commends Homer for being able to incite fear and awe through verse, as the words perfectly "correspond to the emotion of the moment" (141). This is an interesting argument, as it seems that Longinus is less interested in the actual fear itself, than the appropriate selection of words that fit with the emotion of a scene. However, the effect is of intense emotion, which incites sublimity. Another example he draws upon is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Laughter is an emotion everyone has experienced before. Laughter is a common emotion that shows happiness. Happiness yields many benefits whenever humans laugh. Laughter is the best medicine for any type of problem. Laughter makes people happy, but laughter can also make people mournful. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Depression and sadness can be a very tough emotion to deal with. However laughing and depression are opposites therefore, laughing will help relieve depression. As humans, we will try to do anything to find happiness. Why do humans try to fight against depression? Depression is like a disease because it is very adverse for our health. Therefore, we will try to be upbeat so we can stay healthy. Laughing brings a lot of benefits. Laughter relaxes our body physically and mentally. Laughing relaxes the muscles in our body and it helps relieve stress. Laughter boosts the immune system by increasing immune cells, which helps fight disease. Because of this, laughing makes us more resistant to diseases. When we laugh, we release endorphins. Endorphin is our body's chemical that makes us feel superb. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. (Smith, Melinda, Segal, Laughter is the best medicine, Par. 2) Sadness and laughter are opposites. Since laughter is a form of happiness, it is a powerful counter to sadness. It is physically impossible for a human to be happy and sad at the same time. Research shows the human brain cannot be happy and sad at the same time. • 9. Irony In Catch 22 17. In Joseph Heller's novel Catch–22, the horrors of World War II are brought to the forefront. Catch–22 is a black comedy novel, focusing on how people who fight in war, can continue with their lives despite facing death daily. Several characters throughout the novel cope with the war in humorous ways, including Milo Minderbinder. Milo Minderbinder starts his own company, in order to make a profit during the war. Another character, Doc Daneeka, hates flying missions, so he pays people to list him on the flying list but does not actually fly. Throughout Catch–22, the use of ironic laughter explores how both Milo Minderbinder and Doc Daneeka are able to cope with the harsh realities of war. • 11. Roethkes Use of Tone Essay Roethke's Use of Tone Childhood experiences seem to be the ones that are recollected most vividly throughout a person's life. Almost everyone can remember some aspect of his or her childhood experiences, pleasant and unpleasant alike. Theodore Roethke's poem "My Papa's Waltz" suggests even further that this concept could be true. The dance described in this poem illustrates an interaction between father and child that contains more than the expected joyous, loving attitude between the two characters. Roethke's tone in this work exhibits the blended, yet powerful emotions that he, as a grown man, feels when looking back on this childhood experience. The author somewhat implicates feelings of resentment fused with a loving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This stanza also provides the reader with the feeling of how aggressive this dance may be. Roethke is apparently referring to his father's belt buckle in the last line of the third stanza. During an aggressive act such as this, a small child would experience pain from such a man's belt buckle "scraping" across his ear in this fashion, yet the child refrains from any type of resistance. Perhaps this is caused by the child's fear that his father will become angry, so the child simply endures the pain and tries to enjoy the moment, for he may also feel love and attention that he may not receive regularly from his father. Bridges 3 John J. McKenna offers us further suggestions about the feelings suggested in this poem. In McKenna's article, two of the holograph manuscripts to "My Papa's Waltz" are discussed. McKenna implies that the changes made between these manuscripts are further evidence that this poem shows mixed emotions through the tone that Roethke utilizes. These holograph manuscripts are labeled "MS–A" and "MS–B" at the University of Washington where they are contained in the archives. The first of these changes discussed in McKenna's article is the gender of the child in the poem. He discusses how Roethke seemed to argue with himself about what the sex of the child should be, but finally chooses male for a few different reasons. "It seems plausible that he did recognize the rough–house nature of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Lucille Clifton Forgiving My Father Being a father is a thankless job; it is a heavy responsibility for those who hold the title. There are some fathers who fail their children through abuse, neglect, and absence. Theodore Roethke's "Papa's Waltz" recounts a night the speaker's father returns home late after drinking. What happens next can be interpreted as violence or merriment. Lucille Clifton's "Forgiving my Father" is a visit to the grave where the child of two deceased parents "pays her dues". The relationship between father and child in "Forgiving my Father" by Clinton is more positive than that in Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz" allowing for a more loving speaker. If there is to be a comparison of relationships between father and child, then the fathers of the speakers from Clinton and Roethke's poems, respectively, must be weighed on the same scale. Defining the duty of a patriarchal figure presents a starting point to effectively determine the positive or negative effects either "father" may ensue. A father provides for his family. The duty should come before all else in his life. A father should go to work and come home every night. He (father) should also spend as much time as possible with his child(ren). "You gave her all you had" (Clinton line 14) Clinton supports the notion that being a parent means keeping nothing themselves so long as the children are in need. Any money or utilities should be used to improve the living conditions of the family and the chances of the prosperity of the offspring. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Fall By Albert Camus Albert Camus's absurdist novel The Fall deals with many overarching themes: justice, guilt, judgment, freedom, and power. One of the more understated themes is that of punishment, as Jean– Baptiste Clamence is never formally punished. And yet, though the law does not condemn him, he still finds himself plagued by guilt and fear of judgment even after he claims to have found a solution. Camus shows, through symbolism and Clamence's own narration, that the lack of punishment is a burden for Clamence in his supposedly happy life. While speaking to his companion of his new lifestyle in Amsterdam, Jean–Baptiste Clamence proclaims that he has "discovered the secrets of the good life" (Camus 144). He even insists, repeatedly, that he is happy, "happy unto death" (144). And yet Camus sprinkles hints all over the pages that this is not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Water is inextricably tied to his guilt: the suicidal woman he fails to save drowns in a canal (70), and it is from the water that he first hears the condemning laughter (39). Before he ever mentions the woman Clamence didn't save, Camus connects water with death, as Clamence comments on the "breath of stagnant waters, the smell of dead leaves soaking in the canal and the funereal scent rising from the barges loaded with flowers" (43). The water represents his guilt and his crimes, and yet, rather than escaping it, Clamence moves to a city of canals where he is constantly surrounded by water. This is not because the water doesn't affect him any longer; on the contrary, he still fears to cross bridges at night (15) and he admits that he forces himself to admire the canals (43). He outright acknowledges that the cry of the suicidal woman would "continue to await me on seas and rivers, everywhere, in short, where lies the bitter waters of my baptism" (108). Thus, in surrounding himself by water, Clamence is sure never to be free of the torment of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The human brain will either be happy or sad not both at the same time. When humans are depressed, they tend to be unsocial. Laughing and smiling brings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Humor In Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom When we think of the genre comedy, our immediate thought is usually movies that generate gales of laughter such as Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988) or great performances by comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Steve Carell. Yet, humor can make its presence felt in movies that are not archetypally included in the genre of comedy. In this essay, I will shed light on the use of comedic elements in one such movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). I will begin by citing specific examples from the movie, with references to the three theories of humor. Subsequently, I will discuss how humor impacts the implicit meaning of the film. A gun goes off and in the brawl that ensues, both prized possessions fall to the ground. The nightclub attendees chaotically scramble, causing the diamond and antidote to be tossed around the floor. Both protagonists frantically jump to the ground, but Willie prioritizes the diamond, leaving Indy, who is on the verge of death, to desperately fight his foes and find his antidote. In a comedic manner, the respective items keep slipping from the grasp of the desperate duo. Willie comes in close range of the diamond before a bucket of ice cubes tips over and surrounds the diamond, much to the amusement of the audience! The scene humorously plays out a situation of life–and–death, which in reality is a somber circumstance. It is what triggers the body's release of endorphins or the feel good chemicals. It is what can heal us from pain. From sorrow. From stress. No matter the magnitude of any situation, laughter will always heal an individual to an extent. The concept that causes laughter is humor: something that an individual that finds amusing or comic. What is unique about humor is that no one individual has the exact sense of humor as another individual. No matter how similar an individuals sense of humor might be to another individuals, they are different, even if it be in the smallest way possible. Ralph Ellison's "Extravagance of Laughter," ... By expressing , "thus was violence transcended with cruel but homeopathic laugher, and racial cruelty transformed by a traditional form of folk art," Ellison reveals how the exaggeration involved in the recitation made the story more tolerant, ultimately allowing him to laugh, despite how brutal the incident was (273). It allowed Ellison to forget about the racial cruelty and instead allowed him to laugh about how outrageous the exaggeration was. Upon their return to Tuskegee, the students continued to laugh about their encounters with the cops. • 27. Analysis Of Aboard The Pequod By Herman Melville Aboard the Pequod, as the ship is bustling with activity, Melville describes the scene as the crew performs the grueling task of processing a whale. Large, bubbling try–pots of oil blubber fill the deck of the ship and a heavy smoke blankets the air as harpooners and sailors work regardless of the conditions. Through this familiar scene, Melville layers the setting and characters to build up a distinct mood for this passage. Specifically, he pulls dark romanticism into his writing by paralleling Ahab's monomania and the deterioration of the crew. To establish an ominous atmosphere and describe the impending doom of the voyage, Herman Melville combines many forms of figurative language like sinister similes and the eerie personification of the Pequod with suspenseful imagery. Melville utilizes similes in order to build suspense and emphatically compare evil laughter with rising flames. The laughter and flames are unpredictable and fill the ship with noise and unbearable heat, almost engulfing it. In the passage, he compares the two ideas by stating, "as their uncivilized laughter forked upwards out of them, like the flames from the furnace." Melville connects the menacing behavior of the crew and maniacal laughter to Ahab, as he also exhibits behavior that is erratic and fills the ship with his plans of revenge. Since he also describes the laughter as "forked out of them," it seems as though the sailors are not willingly laughing, but are forced in doing so. Ahab undoubtedly ... • 31. The Modes of Laughter Modes of Laughter There are a plethora of ways in which the prudent reader can discern the elements of modern laughter as noted within Daniel Grojnowski's Aux commencements du rire modern when analyzing Marcel Pagnol's My Father's Glory, Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi, and Eugene Ionesco's The Bald Soprano. Virtually all three of these works celebrate an irreverence that unabashedly admits them into the School of the Absurd, although Ionesco's is probably the least ridiculous. Still, it would be difficult to contend with the fact that laughter is the aim of all of these pieces of literature. Although Grojnowski has described five different modes of producing laughter within Aux commencements du rire modern, these three works focus primarily on humor and nonsense, the latter of which inevitably leads to the undecidable. One of the key aspects of humor is that it is oftentimes bitter sweet. Elements of humor are intrinsically linked with those of sadness. Of the two forms of humor that Grojnowski discusses within the aforementioned document, the one that is most prevalent within Pagnol's work is that in which moments of levity punctuate themes and things that are otherwise soberly serious and, for the most part, sad. Although My Father's Glory is the least absurd of the three works discussed within this essay, there is a finite degree of irreverence contained within this memoir because there is effectively no plot. One part in the movie that makes you understand the theme is when Patch Adams dresses up as an angel which symbolizes spiritual figures. Patch Adams was determined to become a medical doctor once he started visiting patients in the Medical school clinical hours. This made him truly passionate about helping people. • 39. Is the Ending of the Wall by Jean Paul Sartre Ironic? Essay In "The Wall," Jean–Paul Sartre uses many literary techniques to convey irony. Jean–Paul Sartre, an existentialistic writer, states through his characters and symbolism that life has no value. Through Pablo's decision to "trade' his life, Sartre furthers the irony in the story. Symbolism provides authors with a way to convey an underlying theme or to portray the meaning in an event without explicitly outlining the incident. Sartre employs the symbol of a graveyard to express meaninglessness and nothingness. Emotions can express more than a character's feeling at a particular moment, they can also set a tone for a whole story. The conclusion of laughter brings another example of irony through its contradictory nature to the tone at the end ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a mystery that he will never solve. Death now seems meaningless because he has become uninterested in life. He had wrestled with the idea of death all night, sweating, turning grey, pissing himself, only to finally realize that since life has no meaning, death has no meaning and any effort that he might make from the moment he exchanges his life will be ineffectual. Pablo does not believe that Ramon Gris is hiding in the graveyard, but pretends to concede to the Facists that he believes that Gris can be found "in a vault or a gravedigger's shack (243)". Sartre applies the graveyard to symbolize non–existence. Sartre was an existentialist: questioning why we exist and denying the existence of God. This belief dictates that there is nothing after death and that everything about our being disintegrates into oblivion when we die, our thoughts and emotions fades away into the abyss so we have no thoughts when we die. The inquisitors prey upon thoughts by using mental torture and threats of death to get people to question if their life has any meaning in this world. They care nothing about truth or a person's innocence. Juan is innocent yet he is sentenced to death anyway. Pablo sends the Fascists into a graveyard, a place that lacks thought or rationale. Because of Garcia Lorca's death, Neruda joined the Republican movement, starting off in Spain then in France, Neruda worked on a collection of poems called España en el Corazón, or, Spain in our Hearts. When these poems were written, Neruda seemed to be in a very difficult place and it seemed like he would be for a very long time. For example, his poem, Cursed states, "Bring, bring the lamp, see the soaked earth, see the blackened little bone eaten by the flames, the garment of murdered Spain." Just by that excerpt, you can tell that the tone of this poem is very dark. In fact, the majority of Neruda's poems in this book seemed as if they all had the same tone; gloomy and pessimistic. His poems reflected this tone from the 1940's and onward, showing the political struggle in South America. This does show that life experiences can really affect the way that poets write. A disheartening event can lead a poet to write very depressing poems, and vice versa. Even though Neruda wrote a lot about the political struggle, he also wrote a lot of poems about love, such as, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. One love poem that he wrote, Your Laughter, was intriguing. The poem reveals how the person in the poem is obviously struggling in life. But, the laughter of their significant other's motivates them to keep driving through whatever darkness they are going through, and keeps them happy as well. The outcome of this behavior rarely leaves a positive effect on society thus causes a disastrous effect. McMurphy stunned everyone with his personality because he is a happy person who enjoys life and laughs a lot. The first time McMurphy laughed "The Acutes look spooked and uneasy" because no one in the ward had laughed in years (Kesey 19). Everyone in the ward was used to the lack of laughter, so when McMurphy laughed it sparked a negative reaction from them since they hadn't heard laughter in years. This was the first thing McMurphy noticed about the ward too, because later he mentioned that ¨the first thing that got [him] about [the ward], [was] that there wasn't anybody laughing" (Kesey 70). This was strange to him because he had never been in a mental hospital or a place where no one laughs and and he considered laughing to be a symbol of freedom. Some might even describe it as an inalienable right because no one should take that freedom away from another person. Unfortunately, laughter was a right that was taken away from the patients due to medication that made them zombie–like and the fear of being punished by the Big Nurse. The patients in the ward were frightened of the Big Nurse because she could give them cruel punishments, such as a lobotomy or electroshock therapy (ETS) whenever she pleased. She also had the power to decide when the patients could leave the ward. As a result of this, no one in the ward "dared [to] come out and [speak out]¨ against the Big Nurse until after McMurphy's arrival (Kesey 62). Unlike the other patients, McMurphy was courageous enough to stand up to the Big Nurse numerous times. When McMurphy was receiving electroshock therapy, he showed his courage by volunteering to receive the treatment before Chief Bromden ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 64. Spirit Triumph Dbq Holocaust Writings: How Does The Spirit Triumph? As humans, we are very limited physically and mentally but our spirit has a vast room of possibilities. World War 2 has just given our world untreatable wounds. The mass–murdering of six million Jewish people was called The Holocaust. During that time, there were moments when they were weak but there were also scenarios where they were strong in spirit. The Jews used Love, Laughter, and Nature to continue persevering against the Nazis. The Jews used Love to strengthen their spirits. Love is a very strong force in this universe. People tend to satisfy their love by any means possible. Syvia is a prime example. Syvia is a fugitive that hid from the abduction of Jews and is hiding in Lodz Ghetto. She risked her life to get a pear for her younger sister Dora (Doc B). Nazi patrollers could of came around the corner and saw her taking the pear, which could of resulted in her death. Syvia is a primary example. Syvia's family is in a situation where her mother has to give her portion of her meal to Syvia. Her Dad explains that "From pain your mother gave you life, through pain she continues to give (Doc A)." Syvia then goes on to "think" about her Dad's words. She unconsciously says "It hurts Mama to give me life? Why? Didn't I just pop out of her belly button?"(Doc A) That moment, the whole family laughed. All of a sudden, they forgot about the negativity around them and continued with their day. You can see that laughter can pull people out of a negative moment. • 66. Humor In Hamlet Hamlet is often perceived to be a tragedy even though most of the book revolves around death. There is more to what the characters are indicating in the Shakespeare play. Hamlet often brings thoughtful laughter throughout the play. Laughter is brought up in the play in times in which some readers do not realize because of the way Hamlet proceeds with his thoughts throughout the play. Shakespeare uses humor as a device to temporarily distract the audience away from the almost relentless tragedy and dark plot turns that permeate the rest of the story. One of the most outstanding characteristics of Hamlet is his subtle and persistent humor. It indicates the essential soundness of his mind. • 68. Comparing Comedy And Comedy Martin Esslin's definition of drama says that it incorporates a well–structured, economical and unpredictable plot with no boundaries that entertains the audience and allows room for their own interpretation. This is a basic definition. A vast variety of genres fall under the term drama. Two forms that are most frequently talked about and compared are comedy and tragedy. Comedy and tragedy shed light on differences in theatrical storytelling through their contrasting styles and methods of presenting pieces of theatre. If genres of theatre were put on a spectrum, comedy would fall on one end while tragedy would on the opposite. Comedy and tragedy are widely different. They follow various contrasting dramatic constructs invoking the thoughts and emotions pertaining to their genre. A comedy is a piece of theatre that evokes a feel–good response from the audience and allows them to gently discover an underlying truth about human nature. It breaks expectations and increases a level of awareness invoking the involuntary biological response of laughter. Laughter places the audience in a vulnerable state. Laughter is gasping for air with no way of stopping until the comedic effect is no longer amusing. For this vulnerable state to take into effect, the audience must be willing to go along with the joke that the story is attempting to convey. Once the trust has been built, and if this it is a satisfactory production, the successful sound of laughter will commence. Laughter in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being a random Tuesday in April, why was the sun waking me instead of the Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" blaring from my phone at an ungodly hour? I was late; very, very late. Flying out of my bed like a horse out of the gates, I yelled out a few profanities while pulling on the first items of clothing that happened to be lying around and whipping my head around to figure out my bearings. Time didn't seem to exist in my room; there was no way to tell. My phone, my clock, my laptop, everything was gone. Somebody was having some fun with me, and I was about to find out who. His trauma does not stem from the guilt attributed to a violation of civil or moral laws. Instead, he views the murders as acts of justice and, therefore, considers the crime scene to be admirable work. As the perpetrator, Raskolnikov sees the crime in its righteous beauty as well as its callous, cruel nature. He considers himself to be above others and, for this reason, he pushes the boundaries of his own security. Similar to the repeating bell noises, intrusive thoughts continue to plague Raskolnikov and he cannot resist the impulse to invest in such ideas. While he is aware of his circular reasoning, he does not take action to end them similar to how he cannot stop himself from ringing the doorbell. "'Yes, I am...I am all over blood–stains!' said Raskolnikov, with a peculiar look; then he smiled, nodded his head, and turned down the stairs. He went down quietly, without hurry; he was in a fever again, but unconscious of the fact, and full of a strange new feeling of boundlessly full and powerful life welling in him" (Dostoevsky 159). • 74. Journey Into The Night Sedaris There are many reasons why a piece of work becomes popular. Maybe it is because it was a mistake or it was so bad that you just had to read it or maybe it is because the writing was exemplary. There may be an infinite amount of reasons but David Sedaris's "Journey Into the Night" definitely did not get popular because it was mistake. This personal essay is about his night flight to Paris. During this flight he recurs many past memories and feels many emotions such as boarding first which he described as "a little embarassing" (1). This story starts off with Sedaris describing long night flights as the feeling of being in a hospital. He tells us that they are only two classes on the airline which is coach and Business Elite. The first time he sat in Business Elite he describes his experience with humor which adds to his popularity. For instance, as the story goes on he writes that he thought that there was no need to do anything extra for him. He writes, "then they brought me a bowl of hot nuts and I began to soften" (1). Then the flight attendant asks him if she can bring a drink to go with those warm nuts. This is humorous because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 76. Oscar Wilde's The Importance Of Being Earnes Oscar Wilde lived in an imperfect Victorian society, infamous for a brazen landed gentry that was supposed to be the top of society. Instead, they were the epitome of undeserved wealth. In his comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde satirizes what it meant to be a Victorian noble. He the travesty of Lady Bracknell as well as a compilation of stock characters, euphemisms, and an almost constant witty repartee to create a comedic lens to establishes a thoughtful laughter with respect to the upper class. After initial small talk, Bracknell moves to the "minor matters" of the interview: Jack's bloodline. Jack initially states that he lost both of his parents, to which Bracknell replies, "To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness." Wilde establishes the serious subject of death with an immediate contradiction of this mood with Bracknell's ignorant retort. The exchange further juxtaposes Worthing's grave tone with Bracknell's indignant demeanor. After the revelation that Worthing was orphaned at a train station, their discussion concludes with Bracknell's diagnosis of "a contempt for the ordinary decencies of family life that reminds one of the worst excesses of the French Revolution." Through Bracknell's exaggerated and uppity high society demeanor, Wilde comments on the ignorance of the upper class through her misinterpretation of Jack's familiar situation. The real jabs at the gentry, however, are in the instances in which she judges Jack's character by his place of birth. The concept of heredity defining character is a major component of the Victorian upper class who believed their position granted them higher morals and greater piety. Laughing in the face of war and death, literally, is one of the things that make the novel Catch–22 and makes it a notable satirists novel, an original story. It was written in 1961,during the the second World War, when all war novels were written with a dark and dreary tone, while also trying to continue the pre– conceived romantic notions about war. Joseph Heller strips away all of the romantic pretense, and pulling heavily on his own Air Force experience during WWII, presents war in its most raw, un– censored version. Aggression is an indirect or direct attack on an issue in society pertaining to an individual or as situation. It is displayed in the form of humor mixed with play to create paradoxical situations in the book. For instance, the scene in which Aardvark rapes and kills a woman in chapter 39: "I only raped her once explained Aarfy. I had to do that after I raped her" (Heller 418). Heller strategically creates Aarfy to be a dispassionate individual. He shows no compassion or discomfort when discussing the murder he just committed. He justifies his actions through selfish means. When Yossarian confronted Aarfy about his actions his reaction is incongruent with the abomination that he just committed. Any normal human being would have shown remorse for the life that was just lost, not Aarfy. By utilizing aggression Heller is able to highlight the loss of sanity within characters such as Aarfy. His mind has been desensitized to death and he no longer fears taking an innocent civilian's life because he has distanced himself from pain and any emotional realm. This satirical example of aggression also shows the flaws in law enforcement. When Yossarian expresses his anger towards Aarfy and warns him about the fate that awaits him. Aarfy assures him that he will not get in trouble. Yossarian is acting as a cautionary prophet in this piece. However, the snarling twist is when Yossarian is the one who is arrested.
