2. MISE EN SCENE:
The setting in which this specific trailer is shown is the stereotypical high
school, we know this due to the props incorporated such as the lockers,
school books and the several students seen in the clips. Not only this we can
tell it is a secondary school due to them all wearing very casual day to day
wear such as jeans a top and trainer’s furthering this the makeup in which
the girls are wearing is very minimal and does not look too dramatic. We can
tell that this specific trailer will fit into the genre of teen drama due to the high
key lighting which also makes it seem more natural looking in comparison to
the Paranormal Activity trailer previously analysed. We can tell that this film is
shot through the point of view of different types of girls the bullies and the girl
being bullied, at the start the girl who narrates over the top of the montage
we assume to be the nice girl however as the shots progress the tone
Changes and we realize she is the bully. The
shot duration is also very shot so we see an
overview of everything. The clips that are shot
through the camera are desaturated to show
the severity and cruelness and help establish
what’s happening in reality and what’s being
told on camera.
3. CAMERAWORK:
Throughout the entirety of this trailer most of it is filmed with a point of view shot
and the technique of a hand held camera to almost make it seem like a
documentary and see it from not only the bullies perspective but the one being
bullied as well. A reason for doing this is so that it makes the audience sympathize
for a specific character as they feel like they are there when it is happening and are
immersed into the scene. The trailer opens with a long shot of the name of the
school then transfers into a montage of a variety of long shots of the school
students, with this a variety of different angles are incorporated to give the trailer a
bit of dimension such as a low camera angle of just the students shoes this
represents the chaotic nature of the school hallways. The girl that is the bully has
the majority control over the camera representing her dominance over the girls.
There are several close ups of the girl that is
bullied so we can see her facial expressions and
how much of a negative affect this is having on
her. The unsteadiness of the camera also conveys
the intensity and the high level of harassment the
girl is getting and reflects her movement when
being pushed around.
4. EDITING;
The type of editing that is used in this trailer is called montage editing, this is
because a variety of short duration clips have been combined together to covey
the overall storyline, not only this but it also leaves the audience questioning what
is going to happen next so they are more likely to go and watch it in the cinema.
Nearing the end of the trailer the clips are separated using a black screen which
makes it more intense and also gives the audience time to reflect on how upsetting
bulling is. The effect of the camera going static when the bully bumps into the girl
portrays the true force or the shove as well as it creating more drama.
5. SOUND:
The clip begins with light hearted happy and upbeat non diegetic sound track
which fits with the genre of the film, however after approximately 42 seconds the
type of music changes and becomes more sinister highlighted by the deeper base
and the echoing effect. By having this change it highlights the change in mood and
reflects the hostile atmosphere. After every act of abuse the sound is emphasised
to show the pure force of her actions so that it builds up to a point where the
audience are so tense they want to know what is going to happen next. Slowly as
the trailer ends the music changes again to music which conveys the girl being
bullied emotions, it has a lot more touching tone and makes us sympathize with
her. There is irony within this trailer as at the start we have the voice over narration
of the girl who we don’t at first is the bully, however at the end it is
Repeated that she is “normal teenage girl” but we
truly know how cruel she is. The dialogue of the
bully between the different types of girls is
positive and she is nice and sweet whereas when
she is bullying the other girl we can see the
dramatic change in persona.
6. CREDITS/TITLES:
There are no titles or names of the actors or directors name within this trailer, this
is because they are not well known therefor it cannot be used as a form of
promotion. However the messages that are shown constantly give us a bases on
the background of the bully and how she is looked upon in a positive manner by
many, this makes it shocking when we find out she is bullying someone. The name
of the film is placed at the end the same as any other conventional trailer, a
statement that follows “Based on a million true stories” creates a lasting effect as it
makes the audience realize that this is still happening to many people around the
world and is a problem that needs to be conquered.
7. NARRATIVE:
It is clearly conveyed what the type of story is being told in this trailer due to the
clips that are being shown through the montage. It conveys the story of a girl who
is being bullied and has no one to turn too and has to try and find a way to prove
to everyone who she really is. We can not tell specifically how the story will begin
or end but we can clearly see the turning points in the events and can assume
several conflicts will take place as the film progresses.
8. GENRE:
It is very clear what type of genre this film will follow, it is a teen drama due to it
being set within a school and we can come to a conclusion that it will have
conventions of a teen drama due to the high key lighting and the sound tracks that
follow. Not only this, but the mise en scene creates this such as the lockers and
school books alongside the casual clothing the characters are wearing. We are
presented with many problems that could occur in teenagers life which overall
produces the genre of teen drama.
9. TARGET AUDIENCE:
This film would be aimed at teenagers this is because it has a storyline that some
may be able to relate too and seek advice from. I believe it would mainly be
teenage girls age 12 to 18 especially as for boys they may not be as interested in
teen dramas as much as action films stereotypically. Due to the natural high school
setting it also means they can imagine themselves in the girl that is being bullied
position and therefore sympathize with her more.
10. REPRESENTATION:
This specific trailer represents high school as being dominated by the ‘popular’
mean girls of society, conveying it as a intimidating and unfriendly environment.
The bullying aspect of this film is heavily portrayed in a negative light which means
that the audiences eyes are open to the pure harshness of what happens in certain
schools across the word. The mean girls are conveyed as fake and are only
concerned with their looks and style in comparison to the girl who is being bullied
who is more timid, humble and natural looking
11. UNIQUE SELLING POINT:
The unique selling point of this film is that part of the film is seen through the
footage that has been filmed by the camera that the girl being bullied is holding.
This means we can several point of view shots and as an audience member we feel
immersed into the action and events taking place. Another factor is that by having
the statement at the end say that it is “Based on a million true stories” it creates a
real feeling and effect linking It to a documentary style film.
