Making a 
romantic film 
trailer.
Conventions 
• Voiceover to introduce theme 
• Main characters introduced 
• Aimed at female-leaning audience 
• ‘Boy meets girl’ scenario, typical happy endings. 
• Emotional 
• Include sexuality, status, gender and relationships. 
• Usually some sort of conflict. 
• Symbols of love i.e. flowers, hearts and wedding bells. 
• Traditional ‘happy ever after’. 
• Story becomes linked to audience emotions
What is conventional for general film 
trailers? Inc. Sound, editing and 
camerawork. 
• Variety of titles. One is a disclaimer that displays which 
audience the film is suitable for, it is shown at the beginning 
so no one unsuitable will watch it. 
• Another title is producers and distributers of the film. Names 
of the actors. 
• Sound; starting voiceover. 
• Short clips of different parts of film to entice audience. 
• Cut between different shots. 
• Transitioned and faded to black to help the trailer flow. 
• Close ups for emotions, long shots to show location.
Theories about trailers. 
• Hypodermic needle theory; producers and directors 
are injecting the audience with information in a way 
that will manipulate them into seeing the film. 
• Some audience will however take the information from 
the trailer and interpret it in their own way and 
therefore following the audience reception theory. For 
example those who disagree with the footage and are 
not persuaded to see the film are a negotiated 
audience. Those who are persuaded are a dominant 
audience.
• Romantic films are designed to entertain the 
audience using escapism. 
• Typical characters of the film are usually a boy 
and girl who end up falling in love with each 
together. 
• Most romances are usually set in large cities.
Music 
• Non-diegetic sounds to build atmosphere. 
• Soft pop music 
• Soft music when characters meet and begin to 
fall in love 
• Non-diegetic music when they begin a 
relationship with music building up when 
conflict arises leading to a breakup.
Dialogue 
• Used to show story behind the characters 
• General personality of those speaking in film. 
Sound effect 
Non-diegetic sound within romantic films often is 
music to show the characters falling love and show 
when the complication is about to happen and turn 
the story.
Mise-en-scene 
• Lighting is dim in order to create a romantic tense 
atmosphere between the two characters to show 
the connection between the male and female 
characters. 
• Costume is often casual. 
• Everyday props, rose, mobile phones etc. 
• Variety of locations depending on age of the 
romantic film. 
• Characters are mainly male and female who 
previously did not know each other and have first 
met.
