Dr. Petrocelli Islam, Christianity and Buddhism are three of the world's largest religions. Two out of them are considered Abrahamic religions that
share monotheistic beliefs, while the remaining one is more of practiced philosophy of the mind. Monotheism is the belief of one deity that only exists
in the universe. The Islamic followers are classified as Muslims, while the followers of Christianity are categorized as Christians and of Buddhism are
called Buddhists. In this essay we will look at the socioeconomic and spirit___. Dual contexts that gave rise to each religion, specifically social

Islam and Christianity have a Holy Book sent by God, which is a major component for these religions. The Quran which was revealed to Prophet
Muhammad is the primary source of a muslims, it captures the daily faith and much needed practices that must be followed by each muslim to
continue to adhere to Islam. It was revealed in Arabic only to Prophet Muhammad, therefore any other copy is only considered a translation, usually
sometimes by scholars who dare to interpret it. The Quran emphasizes on the relationship of God and his Creatures, it is a guideline to maintain a
just and peaceful society through strict rules and structures that refrain from sins, teaching proper human conduct and an equitable economic
system. One of the main priorities of being a Muslim is to keep up with the five pillars of Islam throughout your lifetime. The five pillars are the
Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Saum and Hajj. The Shahada is the Profession of faith it is the fundamental belief of islam and that is that "There is no God
but God and Prophet Muhammad is his prophet." It emphasizes the monotheistic nature of Islam which continues to preach the name of one God.
Lastly Hajj and the pilgrimage to Mecca, this pilgrimage focuses on visiting the Kaaba and walking around it seven times. The pilgrimage is a
rigorous trip to mecca and can sometimes create exhaustion. Just as Muslims have the five pillars to follow, Christianity have to adhere to prayers,
worship in the church, reading the bible, acts of charity(just like Zakat of Islam) and communion. Just like the Quran, the bible teaches the truth, and

Religions Around The World Today
There are many different religions around the world today. We all have our own opinions on whether or not we believe in God or not, but what
makes every religion different from the other could be because of traditions or rituals, the way we dress based on our religion or the place we
worship. However the one thing we all have in common is we turn to religion to guide us in one way or another for greater depth or to set us down the
right path in life. Firstly there is Hinduism. Hindus believe that their position in today's society was determined by the things they did or
participated in, in their previous lives. For example, if a person's behaviour in the past was very negative instead of positive, Hindus believe that
those people will have deep hardships or problems because of that. Every Hindus main goal in life is to escape from all negativity so it does not
ever come back to them. They also believe that only the soul matters and rebirths are possible after their souls are at rest. Hindus often worship at
home or do Temple worship. Worshippers in this religion repeat the names of their favourite Gods and Goddesses, and repeat mantras. Things such as
water, fruit and flowers are offered to God. Secondly there is Judaism. There are three types of Jews. Orthodox (Traditional), Conservative (Middle
Ground), Reform (Modern). Jews have a daily prayer that they recite in their home for their monotheism (one God) and presence of God in their
home. Places of worship for Jews

The Three Major Religions Of The World
On this vast planet religions are becoming more prevalent and are being studied more frequently in recent times. Many individuals want to study and
learn about the origins of some religions, on where they were developed and what was the cause of this glorification of a divine. The art of religion is
processed by many ideologies, background, beliefs, myths, and rituals. The five major religions of the world include: Christianity, Judaism, Islam,
Buddhism, and Hinduism are solely based on these ideologies, and ultimately leads to one goal, to follow the path of god, or to seek a euphoric state of
salvation. In spite of all the differences among the world's five major religions, they have very similar ethical constructs, which should encourage
more mutual respect among them. Each of the world's five major religions have a set of principles and laws in which they abide by. In the morals and
ethics of Christianity, they have the Greatest Commandment which pertains to loving God with all your might. To fulfill this principle, they follow
the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would do unto yourself), and the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are very similar to the 5
Precepts of Buddhism: do not kill, do not steal, do not participate in sexual misconduct, do not lie, and to not become intoxicated. These values are
shared among people of the Islamic religion as they do not believe in the wrongdoings of certain actions within the Halal law as it dictates what one's
actions is

Tenrikyo Is A Religion Of The World
Tenrikyo is a religion that emphasizes on how the joyous state of mind can greatly influence in what will be going through in our lives by satisfying
god's desires by making a good use of our body. In this paper, I am going to argue that Tenrikyo is one of the fastest growing religions in the world
due to its rapid expansion that leads to an emerging new religion but does not interfere with other religions at the same time. Tenrikyo is based on a
religion established by a Japanese lady named Nakayama Miki during the 19th century. Tenrikyo is a monotheistic religion that followers believe in the
existence of this one particular God, as known as God the Parent. It was said that Nakayama Miki had received a calling by god, sent her to save all
mankind from sufferings because god is the creator of mankind and it is his job to make sure that we are all in a joyous state. "God showed great
mercy towards mankind, he came down and revealed himself as Nakayama Miki, taking her as mediatrix and his elected shrine. " (van Straelen 8)
It was said that she had a revelation at 1838, God the Parent replaced her mind and thus her words are the words of god. According to Eliade, He
argued that all religions originate to serve the sacred, and stay in contact with them. This is because according to his theory, religions are man made
and it exists because it was meant to be a response to the sacred. From what happened to Nakayama Miki, a myth might be established because the

The Indigenous Religions Of The World
The Indigenous Religions of the World
Throughout the world there are many various religions, some very common to you and I. However, there are many religions that are common in
several isolated places all around the world in Japan, Australia, and the Americas. Many of these religions, called Indigenous Religions are based on
nature, and the earth. The practice of these religions is considered sacred to the people that follow them. Many of these indigenous people are fully
sacrificed to their religion. They live their lives according to these religions and are fully indebted to them. The four major Indigenous Religions are
Shinto, found in Japan, the Australian Aboriginal, African, and Native American.
The Native American Religion is based off of nature. Many Native Americans believe in a Great Spirit who powers all aspects of life. This spirit,
they believe, makes its presence known through nature; plants and animals. Performing various rituals, ceremonies, and prayers, the Native American
people focus most of their worship on important points of the agricultural and hunting seasons. Many of their prayers are offered in song and dance
form (Spielvogel) . One very well–known ceremony of the Native American people is the Sun Dance. The Sun Dance is practiced by many tribes,
even today, as a prayer for life. It is much like the Native American's Thanksgiving. Many people may dance to pray for a relative or friend, or to
determine their place in the world, but it is their

Why Is World Religion Important
Why is World Religion an important subject? Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. For someone to live in such a place
where there is so much diversity that person would have to have knowledge of the cultures people have, beliefs that people hold and how different
people communicate with one another. The subject of World Religions teaches these things. In some situations having knowledge about different
religions may be beneficial. Isobel Findlay and Kitty Locker write "We may not be aware of the most basic features of our own culture until we come
into contact with people who do things differently"(107). This quote written in the Business Communication Now, Canadian edition brings to light that

How two people interpret something differently can also be because of their beliefs, in reference to the quote before about the different views that
Japanese and Canadians have on competition. Most importantly the beliefs that someone holds close to their heart are often influenced by the person's
religion. Nonverbal communication happens through the display of how somebody acts in the presence of another. How that person sits or how that
person reacts to certain thing someone does. Sometimes these things can be miscommunication. Isobel Findlay and Kitty Locker write "An Arab
student assumed that his U.S. roommate disliked him intensely because the U.S. student sat around the room with his feet up on the furniture, soles
toward the Arab roommate"( 110). In the Arab culture the foot is seen as something that is unclean, the sole in particular being unclean, showing the
sole is regarded as an insult. Differences in culture can lead to this unfortunate miscommunication. Misunderstanding can sometimes also be harder to
clear up because one of the people may not even be aware of what is happening. World Religion course teaches about customs and ways of
communication that different

Religion 220: Survey Of World Religions
The course Religion 220– Survey of World Religions introduced me to different beliefs, and practices of religions. Of the many religions examined,
the three that resonate within my being are: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. I can relate to these religions as all three share several similarities and is
in sync with many of my core beliefs. To begin, they all believe inGod. These religions have a designated house of worship: for Christians– church or
chapel, Islam– mosque, and Judaism– synagogue or temple. They all share the Old Testament and believe in an afterlife. They all believe in
non–violence also practice some form of meditation. All three religions draw on a Holy Book: Christians use the Holy Bible; Judaism utilizes The

World Religions Dbq Essay
More than three quarters of the world are following a religion, we as human beings use religions as a way of answering the unexplainable questions
in life like what happens after we die. What's similar between these religions even though they're so spread out? Some believe in gods, some believe in
giving up your worldly desires, and some provide a social hierarchy to live your life on. Many of these religions follow a God, or gods. Judaism for
example revolves around one God. In document 1, in an excerpt from the book of Exodus, it shows a list of ten rules or, commandments. Number 1
on this list says "I am the Lord your God." Judaism popped up around 1000 BCE in Mesopotamia. It has very strong ties and resemblances to another
major world religion, Islam. This isn't the only religion that believes in gods. One of the earliest major religions, Zoroastrianism, originating in persia
in 6th century BCE, believes that life began with twin spirits, one was the good, one was the evil. They established Life, and non–life. In document 1
and 7, it shows that both of the religions share commandments that its followers should live by. Both of these religions share many commonalities. ...

suffering. Taoism is another religion that teaches to let go of your earthly cravings, in order to reach enlightenment. Document 5 it says," Embrace

Hinduism has approximately 950 million followers.

According to Hinduism, Brahman connotes the Universal Principle. Everything is linked to it. Atman is also a part of Brahman. It means a soul of a
person. Atman travels from a body to another, and the body is determined byKarma. If a person does lots of good deeds in their life, Atman gathers lots
of good karma. Atman that has lots of good karma gets an embodiment that is commonly honoured.

Religion : An Aspect Of Our World
Francesca Krupp
Final Paper
Dr. Land–Closson
27 April, 2016
Religion, for many is an aspect of our world that can bring people together, or in many cases, tear people apart. It can cause vast violence, or
everlasting peace within civilizations. Religion defines the lives of many, governing how they live and the moral code that they choose to follow.
However, Religion to em has always simply been what I was raised in. I grew up a cradle catholic, meaning from the day I took my first breathe, to
the day I walked across my high school graduation stage, I had a firm grasp of what I believe in and why I believed in it. I have attended private
catholic school my entire life, being taught over and over the importance of religion, but primarily, my religion: Catholicism. This semester was one
of the first times in my nineteen years of life that I was exposed to the reality of what religion truly is to people, what i listed above. Religion
became more of a lifestyle and a way of living than simply a Sunday morning or Thursday evening. Religion and The Human Quest has given me the
chance to see many religions and how each of them have allowed my own religion to grow.
As I stated, to begin, I was raised in a very strong foundational Catholic home. I never desired to questions my faith, because to this day I am still very
devoted to my Faith. I learned at a young age, and since then, that when you have hit rock bottom in your life sometimes all you have left is Faith,
therefore it has

Religion and the Development of the Western World
Religion and the Development of the Western World
The accomplishments and success of civilizations are closely linked to their religious outlook and the role of religion in their governments and society.
Throughout history rulers have used the influence of religions to control their populations and provide the justification for their power. A society with a
greater degree of separation between religion and government promotes a superior level of liberty and creativity amongst its people. By the time of the
decline of the Roman Empire in the west, however, the world had come full circle to a return to theocratic dictatorship. In the ancient civilization of the
Sumerians religion was an important part of both the lives of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the time of the republic it had developed into an honorific system of ancestor worship that focused on family and the importance of that unit as a
model for the republic. The Roman religion came to mirror that of the Greeks, as did so much of their society. Their government maintained a control
over religion throughout, however, using laws to promote the worship of some and condemn the worship of other gods. Indeed, after the crises of the
late republic one of Augustus ' actions was to promote a return to the traditional family and religious values by building temples and supporting
religious schools. He outlawed new, foreign religions and after his death he was worshiped as a god. This was the beginning of the turn back towards
religious autocracy. The emperors became quasi–religious figures in life and were objects of popular cult worship after their deaths. This is a rejection
of the Hellenic ideal of the greatness of the common man. It promotes the will of a single idealized super elite to the detriment of the populace. By
the decline of the western empire the emperors ruled by decree, sending their infallible word down from on high to the masses. The free debate of
ideas was dead. This became the religious model propagated in the Byzantine Empire. There all semblance of separation between the state and religion
was eliminated. The emperor made his decrees on matters of politics and law as well as matters of faith and theology. Christianity was

Defining World Religion Essay
Defining the world 'religion' is not an easy process, fraught with difficulties. Throughout the ages, many attempts have been made. Often time's people
tend to focus on a very narrow definition that matches the person's own beliefs but not others. One of the reasons it's notoriously difficult to define
because it crosses so many different boundaries in human experience. According to the Miriam Webster dictionary, religion could be identified as 'a set
of ideas concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral
code governing the conduct of human affairs' . Some see religion as a belief, while some understand it as the interaction of belief, behavior ... Show

Western World Religion
Although there were many different aspects that played into the shaping of Western society, religion was the most influential. That's not to say that
religion was able to do that alone, but it seems that no matter what was happening during the course of the last several hundred years, religion played a
part. Without the efforts of Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and many others who were willing to stick their necks out for religious freedom. Bucking the
system and questioning the status quo was exactly the theme of every major development in the Western world. The following words from Martin
Luther help to bring together an idea that sparked progression and reform that began in the early 1500s and is still in motion today:

Prayer is a part of everyday life for a believer and you don't have to be a Christian even unbeliever prays. Prayer is so natural to man that is unusual, it
is abnormal not to pray and it is normal in every religion.
As there are diverse and countless religions in the world, prayer is one characteristic that is shared among many world religions and philosophies.
Generally speaking, all religions agreed on the needs and importance of prayer in searching, worshipping and getting access to God or goddess. For
instance Muslims pray because they are commanded to pray five times a day and strict guidelines are laid down for this. Buddhists also involve

Essay on Indigenous Religions of the World
Indigenous religions exist in every climate around the world and exhibit a wide range of differences in their stories, language, customs, and views of
the afterlife. Within indigenous communities, religion, social behavior, art, and music are so intertwined that their religion is a significant part of their
culture and virtually inseparable from it. These religions originally developed and thrived in isolation from one another and are some of the earliest
examples of religious practice and belief. The modern world; however, has taken its toll on these groups and many of their stories, customs, and
beliefs have been lost to, or replaced by, those brought in as a result of popular culture and the missionary work of Christians and Muslims. ... Show

For those languages which have no written form, when the language dies off, so does the accumulated knowledge and history of the culture. Sadly,
indigenous languages around the world are dying off at an alarming rate. It is estimated that nearly half of the languages spoken today are likely to die
off within the next century if steps are not taken to preserve those which still exist.
Recently, researchers working on a project geared toward the cataloging of basic word lists of the endangered aboriginal tongues in Australia, "met
the sole living speaker of Amurdag, a language in the Northern Territory that has already been declared extinct" (Wilford, John Noble). It is doubtful
that the language can be brought back, as the speaker "strained to recall words he had last heard from his late father" (Wilford, John Noble) but
researchers were at least able to make a record of it.
In addition to the loss of culture and language for indigenous people, they are also experiencing the loss of their traditional lands and native
environment. For indigenous people, much personal and group meaning comes from the natural environment and as a result, their religious practices
are deeply rooted in the environment in which they live. When the environment that they rely on is taken away for development, both their cultural and
religious identity suffers.
Very few places exist today in which indigenous people can live

Why Study World Religion
Thirty years ago, I would not have had one iota of interest in studying world religions in a secular institution. As a former student of a private Bible
college and a member of a Christian semi–cult in the Bay Area, I did not view the study of world religions as an innocuous or trivial activity. Classes
in my college that taught about other religions were called "apologetics." In these classes, through a biased world view, our mentors taught us how to
present people with logical and persuasive arguments that would win them over to the only "true" belief.
Coercive classroom teaching was reinforced by Scriptures such as, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,"(2 Timothy 2:15)1 and "...be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of
the hope that is in you..."(1 Peter 3:15).2 The Scripture found in Hebrews 13:17, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves..."3
provided the cult leaders with the clout to send us out three times a week canvassing door to door and on street corners for converts. ... Show more

Deviating away greatly from the other religions, you will find large differences in the way Buddhism is practiced. One of the biggest distinctions
probably being the lack of an almighty God. Instead of worshiping a person directly, Buddhists worship the teachings of the Buddha (Siddhartha
Gautama) who founded the religion in the late 6th century. Since then, millions of people have joined in as followers. The religion itself is broken
down into two main branches, Theravada and the Mahayana. Both teachings of Buddha but just different expressions. Buddha preached what has
become known as the core of Buddhism, the four noble truths: 1. there is suffering, 2. the cause of suffering is desire, and 3. there is a way to
overcome desire and become free from suffering, and 4. the eightfold path leads to freedom from suffering. This eightfold path leads to nirvana, or
release from suffering and from the nearly endless cycle of rebirths that keep people attached to lives of suffering. This path consists of: 1. Right
understanding, 2. Right thoughts, 3. Right speech, 4. Right action, 5. Right livelihood, 6. Right effort, 7. Right mindfulness, and 8. Right

The ones who live outside their country are also considered Asian Indians and they might be different but they are equally important. According to the

can be explained based on how Hinduism was developed in India. Different from other major historic religions, Hinduism can't be traced directly to

Why Study World Religions
Why Study World Religions? Religion to me is a set of rules and beliefs of one individual to be followed by an abundance of people. As William A.
Graham states in Why Study Religion In the 21st Century "Religion is the key element in every culture and in every phase of history." All over the
world, religion is a huge thing for people. Religion has brought people closer than ever before, An example is how close America became during 9
/11. That day America was united as a whole. Religion has also had its down right degrading moments. The holocaust, is one of the most disturbing
and screwed up things to ever happen to a group of people because of who they believe in. As Stephen Prothero says on page 7 of God Is Not One
"Unfortunately, we live in a world where religion seems as likely to detonate a bomb as to defuse one." This idea is actually factual in a way, When
it comes to religion, it seems that most people want to argue about what religion is better and try to convert others than talk about it. Just like Prothero
also says "We need to look at not only their awe–inspiring architecture and gentle mystics but also their bigots and suicide bombers." We have to look

2001, it's a shame that the harsh reality of how one catroprohy can really impact people ten years down the line. The article also states that "based on

Class World Religion
Taking the class world religions has benefited my understanding of many different religions. Not only did it enhance my knowledge on all
religions, but gave me a deeper understanding on my own beliefs. My ideas on the different religions have expanded and given me a new
perspective. World religions have opened my view up to different ideas and have shown me the similarities and differences between the difference
religions. I found that I actually believe in different aspects of all the religions and not just one solid idea. When I was younger, I grew up in a
christian household. I went to a private christian school and learned about Jesus and the beliefs involved in christianity. I thought I was always a strong
christian. Now, after taking world religions I believe in different aspects of all the religions. I still believe in most christianity aspects, but I also
believe in some ideas from Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. I believe in one God and one God only. I believe in Jesus and that he was the son of God.
I believe that Jesus came to this Earth to take away our sins and save us from eternity in hell. Most of Jesus' teachings in the bible I also believe in.
I believe and hope that when I die I will go to heaven for eternity. Though most of my beliefs are christian, I also believe in some parts of Buddhism. I
believe in the idea that all suffering ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

their Greek–Syrian oppressors. I also learned that not all Jewish men have long curly beards. Only a small group of traditional Jews have the long

World Religions: Comparative Discussions
World Religions: Comparative Discussions 1.Compare and contrast Hinduism and Buddhism on the question of atman. What does each tradition have
to say about whether a human being has an individual soul? What is the significance of this soul (or lack thereof) in each tradition? The concept of the
'self' is critical to a great many religious traditions. Understanding one's own individual position within the context of the universe helps to drive one's
relationship to the divine, to the pedestrian and to one's fellow man. This is the orientation that helps define atman in the Hindu tradition. Here, this
layered 'self' is a critical dimension of one's spiritual enlightenment. Finding and recognizing one's 'permanent self' from within is an essential part of
this path. A concept tantamount to the soul, the atman is, in Hindu tradition, said to be the vestige of humanity that remains even when the body is
expired. This makes it an essential premise also of transferring the self during the cycle of reincarnation. As to its fundamental importance to the
spiritual tradition, Wangu (2010) notes that "an unwise person is unaware of atman, and has no spiritual guidance. He follows his ego and thinks he
"knows" himself. With uncontrolled mind and untrained senses he is like a wildly flickering flame in a storm. The wise person, on the other hand, is
like a steady flame in a windless place." (Wangu, p. 1) This characterization is actually a sharp departure, however, from how questions

Religion And The Modern World Essay
Religions and civilization have always gone hand in hand, forming and evolving as time goes on. With so many various religions represented
throughout history and in our diverse cultures, there are various subjects, ideas, and themes depicted and repeated. With so many concepts available to
us in so many forms, we are able to easily compare and discuss their presence and how they integrate into concepts of the modern world.
Two forms of religion are animism versus anthropocentrism. Animistic religions are the oldest kind of religion (though only ten percent of the world
currently practice) and maintains the belief that everything around us has a soul – animals, plants, the elements. Animistic religions view everything as
sacred, so the Earth and those who inhabit deserve to be treated with respect. Anthropocentric religions, however, hold a drastically different opinion.
While animistic religions view all as sacred, anthropocentric religions, such as Christianity, believe that only humans have a soul, placing them on a
pedestal and regarding them as something superior to all other lifeforms. Due to the beliefs of anthropocentric religions, it can be argued that they
benefit the capitalist economy. The capitalist economy likes to turn anything and everything possible into a profit, and by placing humans on a pedestal
and viewing everything else as a lesser being, anthropocentric religions allow the exploitation of natural resources without the accompanying guilt of

Religions of the World Essay
Religions of the World
Religions of the world must be studied subjectively, or with the attitude of pluralism, the view that they are all equal. A number of methods are used to
study religions. The most common is the historical comparative method in which a certain faith's history and traditions are deliberated. This method
focuses on orthodoxy, meaning "correct thought." Another method is the phenomenological method. This method, unlike the historical comparative
method, is centered on orthopraxy, or "correct practice." Other less common methods involve subjective modes of study such as the confessional
method of study, which interprets a religion based on a particular point of view, and the empathetic approach, which is based ... Show more content on

Rocks also possess religious references. Easter Island and Stonehenge, for example, hold religious significance of ethnic religions of the past. The
Kotel, or the Wailing Wall, in Jerusalem is a more modern example, being the last standing part of the second temple. Other examples of physical
geography in religion are trees, which were used to create totems, and rivers, such as the Nile, which was sacred in the ancient Egyptian religion and
the Ganges, which is still sacred today to the Hindus. Water is used as a means of purification in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The desert is also
and example. It is often considered to be a means of spiritual refinement. The ecology of religion is of great importance. The processes of nature
become ritualized in attempt to change the processes or powers behind them. Simple ethnic religions, especially, are built around cycles of nature as
fertility rituals. The more complex the religion becomes, the more complex the type of ritual practiced becomes. When Christianity began, it practiced
many of the values from the Mediterranean agricultural societies from which it originated. Christianity began to take on the characteristics of the
people who accepted it. For instance, the Jewish Passover became Easter, Christmas was not originally practiced, but Christians gradually absorbed the
pagan celebration of the winter solstice. Religion also relates directly to the land. Environmental

Religion: The Cositive And Positive Effects Of Religions...
Religions have both positive and negative effects in the world. In regards to everything in the world, religions too have consequences. Who says
there is only one true religion and if there is, which religion is the true religion? There is not an easy way or correct way to answer to question
number 1 and 7. The answer will vary depending on who you ask. In my personal opinion, I believe religion itself may not be socially constructed but
its aspect, beliefs, and traditions are socially constructed. When we think about religion, the first question that comes to our mind is, what is a
religion? If you ask a person who firmly believes that their religion is the only religion and there is no other religion than his or hers, then you will have

58). Religion to me is a way of life. It has so much meaning and gives meaning to life. It is not the same worldwide, therefore we cannot make an
assumption that it is the same everywhere. Religion, just like language, guides people and have various meanings. Languages worldwide have a
different meaning, it may be the same word, but it may not be the same when we translate it. Religion is what we make up of it, it does not have to
be forced on upon you. Religion brings people together and connects them together. With different rituals, we better understand one another and learn
to respect. Finally, we cannot talk about religion without talking about politics. Religion and politics go in hand in hand. So many conflicts arise
from religion. Why is that? Because people have disparate opinions and notions and everyone believe their religion is the true religion. We can see an
example of religion and politics on page 55 in Toolkit "In Europe's pre–modern era, political power was legitimated through religious authority". Even
today, if you look at India and Nepal where Hinduism is a major religion, you would see that those in power are there through their religious beliefs and

Essay on Religion in a Multicultural World
Religion
In a multicultural world where language, traditions and culture differ from country to country there is one thing that may be deemed to be true and
this is that religion is the centre point for most of them. So then what exactly is religion? And how can you define it? In this paper I will be analysing
and considering the different definitions that have been proposed by Victoria S. Harrison in her article "The pragmatics of defining religion in a
multi–cultural world" and what I consider to be the most applicable definition of religion to date, though there may not be one. Firstly before we can
analyse a text we must first understand what the author or publisher of that particular text is trying to bring forward. In Harrison's ... Show more content

Intellectual definition
Harrison suggests that "Intellectual definitions stipulate that the defining, or essential, feature of religion is belief about a particular sort of
object" (Harrison, 2006, pg. 133) e.g. Man worshiping God. Using this definition many believe that there is a spiritual war going on and that from
the beginning of time there has always been a strong force or power keeping humans safe and away from darkness one can say a war between light
and darkness which have affected cultures and societies within different communities. The stories which were told and passed from generation to
generations about God and the devil have caused us as humans to accept the order of things that were brought to us by ministers and priests of that
particular religion. Denying the fact that man worshipping God does not play a good percentage in the role of defining religion would be wrong but
in saying this though this particular definition looks into the fulfilment that one gets from worshipping God as a whole yet it fails to recognise the
different aspects or dimensions of religion such as the emotionality of it, the traditional roles that are practiced within it and the importance of the faith
circulating it. So in saying this if one was to regard this definition as being the main source of which he or she would base the definition of religion
upon they would be

Comparison and Contrast of World Religions The religions of the world, while differing greatly in their specifics, are surprisingly similar. The three
most prevalent religions in the world are Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism, in that order. All believe in a higher power that presides over and created
man. Islam originated in approximately 609 C.E., or Common Era, and Christianity originated around 33 C.E. which is supposedly when Jesus Christ
was crucified. The main prophet of Islam, Muhammad, is supposedly of the lineage of Jesus Christ. Both religions consider Abraham the father of the
people of Israel, his son Ishmael being the "Father of the Arabs" and his son Isaac being the "Father of the Hebrews". Hinduism originated in India in ...

They are also aligned as the transcendent Godhead, Shiva, the cosmic lord, Vishnu and the cosmic mind, Brahma. (...) This is much like the Christian

world until Shiva arrives to destroy it again. Hindus believe this to be a never–ending cycle of creation. Islam does not believe in any form of Trinity.
All three religions do believe that their respective god of creation is the source of all life on Earth. Islam and Christianity both follow the traditional
belief of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden, while Hinduism believes that Brahma simply takes pieces of himself and forms man. The similarities
may seem to be overwhelming, but in reality these religions differ more than they resemble one another.
Hinduism is the only religion of the three discussed that believes on more than one God. Christianity believes in the Holy Trinity, but these are
essentially all parts of God. Hinduism believes in many separate deities in addition to the main 3 stated before. Islam, however, believes in a single
god, Allah, and any form of Trinity is considered blasphemous. An excerpt from the Koran reads, "and do not speak of a trinity, for it would be better
for you to stop. God alone is the One worthy of worship: glory to God exalted beyond having a son" (pg. 171–75). Although monotheism and

Reflection On The World Religions Course

REFLECTION ON THE WORLD RELIGIONS COURSE. In the World religions class PHIL 1760, I have come to gain a lot of experience and
learnt very helpful things in my life related to religion in particularly. I have come to learn that Religion is a way of life that one chooses to find his/her
tranquility. For example Buddhists meditate as a means to find enlightment and they find such in only their religion and that's the reason they have
faith and hope in their religion. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on what I have come to learn about religion and, I will focus on three main
point that are; how the ideas that I have about religion now are different from what I had at the beginning of the class, what I have learned about
this class that is similar to what I have learned in another class and how I could assimilate what I have learned in this class with my life in general.
My thoughts about religion when I was beginning this class was that I believed all religions didn't matter except the religion of Islam, because they
may be wrong and not be the right religion, they should be ignored. I had this thought and belief since I was young because I believed that the
religion of Islam is right, thus every other religion shouldn't matter because they are wrong. For instance, I remember when I was a little kid and the
cross would show up on the TV when we were watching TV, I would hide it and consider it ignorance. I had this belief till I

World Religions
Religion is a set of beliefs put in place to help you to live a better life and give you direction in life, that is why most religions are similar. In this
essay I will be talking about the similarities between the following religions: Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. Many religions are alike, they all have
rules, consequences, how to live a good and fulfilling life, and what happens to your spirit after death. All religions are unique and different in there
own way but you will be surprised once you see all of the similarities and why they are similar.
Judaism is over 3,000 years old and started out in the Middle East. Judaism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world and it came before
Christianity, matter of the fact is Christianity actually came from Judaism. The only major difference between the two religions is that Christians
believe in God and Jews believe in Abraham. They are both similar because they both believe in sin as a bad thing and that God has mercy and loves
everyone and they both believe in the Ten Commandments. And both know that sin or rebellion is going to be done by every single human being and
is irresistible. Judaism and Islam are also very alike in ways such as Moses, the most important prophet in Judaism, is also a very important prophet
and messenger in Islam and they both believe in one true God. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evolution Of Religion In World History
The evolution of religion in world history has been a fascinating journey to say the least. So many of us profess to be a part of a certain religion but
yet we don't understand how it came to be. By unraveling the beginnings of today's major religions, we can gain a better understanding and
appreciation of religions around the world. Just as everyone is special and unique – so too are the various religions. It's important to understand and
respect whatever beliefs others may have – no matter if we agree with them or not. Religion has greatly evolved over the centuries. Many scholars and
experts believe the earliest form of religion was due to our own fears. (PBS, np). Primitive man had many fears every day. Fear of weather, prey, and...

opportunity to live their lives in the religion while not taking it for granted. Members of the Druze religion live their lives according to the rules set,
but can chose when to stop following them. Being a kid is similar to being in a religion. After being born into it, one is a kid until they no longer

In A Brave New World, there is one religion that is worshiped, and anyone who strays from this religion is looked down upon. .Fact # 11 from Source

of a majority religion. This assumption causes bigotry, ignorance, and harm towards other religions. If one does not follow the status quo, they will be
punished and ridiculed against. This is exemplified in Brave New World multiple times over, where those who follow minority religions are banished
or made to live on the savage reservation with those who they believe are less than human. In the real world, most of the time the repercussions for
following a minority religion results in name calling, and minor offences, though sometimes it can result in assault, killing, or the destruction of an

Religion In Brave New World Religion Essay
Why is it that people, for as long as one can remember, have lived their lives following the rules and morals of something they cannot see, hear, touch,
or smell? For many, when thinking of religion, one may believe that humans have the sense of spirituality and the desire to follow set rules engraved
into their heads. Some people think that one's whole religious path depends on what background a person had and what morals they were raised by.
Some people believe that religion originates from both these opinions, plus many more. The definition of religion is the belief in worship of a
superhuman controlling power, especially in a personal God or Gods. In the novels Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and 1984, by George Orwell,
religion is a key factor in these dystopian worlds, and is portrayed directly through a "Godly" figure to connect with the reader as many people in
today's world live with this same drive of spirituality that the people of these dystopian worlds feel. One of the main ... Show more content on

this spiritual sense within them. In the article, "The Evolution of the God Gene" written by Nicholas Wade in The New York Times, Wade states,

Religion : The Main Causes Of Religion In The World
Religion has a big role in lives today. It is a part of who you are and who you chose to become. It can impact our faith and beliefs, ultimately shaping
us. But, unfortunately we live in a world today where religion is the main cause of violence. Every religion has it's similarities and it's differences in
particular Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are the most popular and the most followed religions in the world, they may be the most popular but they
are also the three religions that are always in conflict with one another. These three religions share so many of the same qualities that it causes them to
lash out with one another. Each one of these groups has a goal and that goal is to be the most popular and the most followed religion in the world.
Violence is something that is happening all over the world, it is the cause of fear and hurting. If you think about all of the attacks in your life it is
mainly because different groups of religions are trying to find some way to hurt others or trying to get back at a different group for attacking them.
Violence brings fear and terror to the world, but the main reason that we have all of this violence is because there are hundreds of groups of people
who are trying to be the group that end up on top. 9/11 was a very tragic and horrible day for many Americans but it is just one of the many violent
tragedies that have been caused by religion. "This religious group was against the Unites States and other Western democratic

Two out of them are considered Abrahamic religions that share monotheistic beliefs, while the remaining one is more of practiced philosophy of the mind. Monotheism is the belief of one deity that only exists in the universe. The Islamic followers are classified as Muslims, while the followers of Christianity are categorized as Christians and of Buddhism are called Buddhists. He began to gather a collective group of muslim followers preaching the message of truth, which God had secretly revealed to him by an angel. Both Islam and Christianity have a Holy Book sent by God, which is a major component for these religions. The Quran which was revealed to Prophet Muhammad is the primary source of a muslims, it captures the daily faith and much needed practices that must be followed by each muslim to continue to adhere to Islam. It was revealed in Arabic only to Prophet Muhammad, therefore any other copy is only considered a translation, usually sometimes by scholars who dare to interpret it. The Quran emphasizes on the relationship of God and his Creatures, it is a guideline to maintain a just and peaceful society through strict rules and structures that refrain from sins, teaching proper human conduct and an equitable economic system. One of the main priorities of being a Muslim is to keep up with the five pillars of Islam throughout your lifetime. The five pillars are the Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Saum and Hajj. The Shahada is the Profession of faith it is the fundamental belief of islam and that is that "There is no God but God and Prophet Muhammad is his prophet." It emphasizes the monotheistic nature of Islam which continues to preach the name of one God. Lastly Hajj and the pilgrimage to Mecca, this pilgrimage focuses on visiting the Kaaba and walking around it seven times. The pilgrimage is a rigorous trip to mecca and can sometimes create exhaustion. Just as Muslims have the five pillars to follow, Christianity have to adhere to prayers, worship in the church, reading the bible, acts of charity(just like Zakat of Islam) and communion. Just like the Quran, the bible teaches the truth, and his understanding and dealing with men. Both the holy book of Christianity and Islam are very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Religions Around The World Today There are many different religions around the world today. We all have our own opinions on whether or not we believe in God or not, but what makes every religion different from the other could be because of traditions or rituals, the way we dress based on our religion or the place we worship. However the one thing we all have in common is we turn to religion to guide us in one way or another for greater depth or to set us down the right path in life. Firstly there is Hinduism. Hindus believe that their position in today's society was determined by the things they did or participated in, in their previous lives. For example, if a person's behaviour in the past was very negative instead of positive, Hindus believe that those people will have deep hardships or problems because of that. Every Hindus main goal in life is to escape from all negativity so it does not ever come back to them. They also believe that only the soul matters and rebirths are possible after their souls are at rest. Hindus often worship at home or do Temple worship. Worshippers in this religion repeat the names of their favourite Gods and Goddesses, and repeat mantras. Things such as water, fruit and flowers are offered to God. Secondly there is Judaism. There are three types of Jews. Orthodox (Traditional), Conservative (Middle Ground), Reform (Modern). Jews have a daily prayer that they recite in their home for their monotheism (one God) and presence of God in their home. Places of worship for Jews ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Three Major Religions Of The World On this vast planet religions are becoming more prevalent and are being studied more frequently in recent times. Many individuals want to study and learn about the origins of some religions, on where they were developed and what was the cause of this glorification of a divine. The art of religion is processed by many ideologies, background, beliefs, myths, and rituals. The five major religions of the world include: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism are solely based on these ideologies, and ultimately leads to one goal, to follow the path of god, or to seek a euphoric state of salvation. In spite of all the differences among the world's five major religions, they have very similar ethical constructs, which should encourage more mutual respect among them. Each of the world's five major religions have a set of principles and laws in which they abide by. In the morals and ethics of Christianity, they have the Greatest Commandment which pertains to loving God with all your might. To fulfill this principle, they follow the Golden Rule (do unto others as you would do unto yourself), and the Ten Commandments. The Ten Commandments are very similar to the 5 Precepts of Buddhism: do not kill, do not steal, do not participate in sexual misconduct, do not lie, and to not become intoxicated. These values are shared among people of the Islamic religion as they do not believe in the wrongdoings of certain actions within the Halal law as it dictates what one's actions is ... • 4. Tenrikyo Is A Religion Of The World Tenrikyo is a religion that emphasizes on how the joyous state of mind can greatly influence in what will be going through in our lives by satisfying god's desires by making a good use of our body. In this paper, I am going to argue that Tenrikyo is one of the fastest growing religions in the world due to its rapid expansion that leads to an emerging new religion but does not interfere with other religions at the same time. Tenrikyo is based on a religion established by a Japanese lady named Nakayama Miki during the 19th century. Tenrikyo is a monotheistic religion that followers believe in the existence of this one particular God, as known as God the Parent. It was said that Nakayama Miki had received a calling by god, sent her to save all mankind from sufferings because god is the creator of mankind and it is his job to make sure that we are all in a joyous state. "God showed great mercy towards mankind, he came down and revealed himself as Nakayama Miki, taking her as mediatrix and his elected shrine. " (van Straelen 8) It was said that she had a revelation at 1838, God the Parent replaced her mind and thus her words are the words of god. According to Eliade, He argued that all religions originate to serve the sacred, and stay in contact with them. This is because according to his theory, religions are man made and it exists because it was meant to be a response to the sacred. From what happened to Nakayama Miki, a myth might be established because the sacred has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Indigenous Religions Of The World The Indigenous Religions of the World Throughout the world there are many various religions, some very common to you and I. However, there are many religions that are common in several isolated places all around the world in Japan, Australia, and the Americas. Many of these religions, called Indigenous Religions are based on nature, and the earth. The practice of these religions is considered sacred to the people that follow them. Many of these indigenous people are fully sacrificed to their religion. They live their lives according to these religions and are fully indebted to them. The four major Indigenous Religions are Shinto, found in Japan, the Australian Aboriginal, African, and Native American. The Native American Religion is based off of nature. Many Native Americans believe in a Great Spirit who powers all aspects of life. This spirit, they believe, makes its presence known through nature; plants and animals. Performing various rituals, ceremonies, and prayers, the Native American people focus most of their worship on important points of the agricultural and hunting seasons. Many of their prayers are offered in song and dance form (Spielvogel) . One very well–known ceremony of the Native American people is the Sun Dance. The Sun Dance is practiced by many tribes, even today, as a prayer for life. It is much like the Native American's Thanksgiving. Many people may dance to pray for a relative or friend, or to determine their place in the world, but it is their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Why Is World Religion Important Why is World Religion an important subject? Canada is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. For someone to live in such a place where there is so much diversity that person would have to have knowledge of the cultures people have, beliefs that people hold and how different people communicate with one another. The subject of World Religions teaches these things. In some situations having knowledge about different religions may be beneficial. Isobel Findlay and Kitty Locker write "We may not be aware of the most basic features of our own culture until we come into contact with people who do things differently"(107). How two people interpret something differently can also be because of their beliefs, in reference to the quote before about the different views that Japanese and Canadians have on competition. Most importantly the beliefs that someone holds close to their heart are often influenced by the person's religion. Nonverbal communication happens through the display of how somebody acts in the presence of another. How that person sits or how that person reacts to certain thing someone does. Sometimes these things can be miscommunication. Isobel Findlay and Kitty Locker write "An Arab student assumed that his U.S. roommate disliked him intensely because the U.S. student sat around the room with his feet up on the furniture, soles toward the Arab roommate"( 110). In the Arab culture the foot is seen as something that is unclean, the sole in particular being unclean, showing the sole is regarded as an insult. Differences in culture can lead to this unfortunate miscommunication. Misunderstanding can sometimes also be harder to clear up because one of the people may not even be aware of what is happening. World Religions Dbq Essay More than three quarters of the world are following a religion, we as human beings use religions as a way of answering the unexplainable questions in life like what happens after we die. What's similar between these religions even though they're so spread out? Some believe in gods, some believe in giving up your worldly desires, and some provide a social hierarchy to live your life on. Many of these religions follow a God, or gods. Judaism for example revolves around one God. In document 1, in an excerpt from the book of Exodus, it shows a list of ten rules or, commandments. Number 1 on this list says "I am the Lord your God." Judaism popped up around 1000 BCE in Mesopotamia. It has very strong ties and resemblances to another major world religion, Islam. This isn't the only religion that believes in gods. One of the earliest major religions, Zoroastrianism, originating in persia in 6th century BCE, believes that life began with twin spirits, one was the good, one was the evil. • 14. Religion : An Aspect Of Our World Francesca Krupp Final Paper Dr. Land–Closson 27 April, 2016 Religion, for many is an aspect of our world that can bring people together, or in many cases, tear people apart. It can cause vast violence, or everlasting peace within civilizations. Religion defines the lives of many, governing how they live and the moral code that they choose to follow. However, Religion to em has always simply been what I was raised in. I grew up a cradle catholic, meaning from the day I took my first breathe, to the day I walked across my high school graduation stage, I had a firm grasp of what I believe in and why I believed in it. I have attended private catholic school my entire life, being taught over and over the importance of religion, but primarily, my religion: Catholicism. This semester was one of the first times in my nineteen years of life that I was exposed to the reality of what religion truly is to people, what i listed above. Religion became more of a lifestyle and a way of living than simply a Sunday morning or Thursday evening. Religion and The Human Quest has given me the chance to see many religions and how each of them have allowed my own religion to grow. As I stated, to begin, I was raised in a very strong foundational Catholic home. I never desired to questions my faith, because to this day I am still very devoted to my Faith. I learned at a young age, and since then, that when you have hit rock bottom in your life sometimes all you have left is Faith, therefore it has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Religion and the Development of the Western World Religion and the Development of the Western World The accomplishments and success of civilizations are closely linked to their religious outlook and the role of religion in their governments and society. Throughout history rulers have used the influence of religions to control their populations and provide the justification for their power. A society with a greater degree of separation between religion and government promotes a superior level of liberty and creativity amongst its people. By the time of the decline of the Roman Empire in the west, however, the world had come full circle to a return to theocratic dictatorship. By the time of the republic it had developed into an honorific system of ancestor worship that focused on family and the importance of that unit as a model for the republic. The Roman religion came to mirror that of the Greeks, as did so much of their society. Their government maintained a control over religion throughout, however, using laws to promote the worship of some and condemn the worship of other gods. Indeed, after the crises of the late republic one of Augustus ' actions was to promote a return to the traditional family and religious values by building temples and supporting religious schools. He outlawed new, foreign religions and after his death he was worshiped as a god. This was the beginning of the turn back towards religious autocracy. The emperors became quasi–religious figures in life and were objects of popular cult worship after their deaths. This is a rejection of the Hellenic ideal of the greatness of the common man. It promotes the will of a single idealized super elite to the detriment of the populace. By the decline of the western empire the emperors ruled by decree, sending their infallible word down from on high to the masses. The free debate of ideas was dead. This became the religious model propagated in the Byzantine Empire. There all semblance of separation between the state and religion was eliminated. The emperor made his decrees on matters of politics and law as well as matters of faith and theology. Christianity was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Defining World Religion Essay Defining the world 'religion' is not an easy process, fraught with difficulties. Throughout the ages, many attempts have been made. Often time's people tend to focus on a very narrow definition that matches the person's own beliefs but not others. One of the reasons it's notoriously difficult to define because it crosses so many different boundaries in human experience. According to the Miriam Webster dictionary, religion could be identified as 'a set of ideas concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs' . That's not to say that religion was able to do that alone, but it seems that no matter what was happening during the course of the last several hundred years, religion played a part. Without the efforts of Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and many others who were willing to stick their necks out for religious freedom. Bucking the system and questioning the status quo was exactly the theme of every major development in the Western world. They weren't perfect to begin with, and many countries were ruled by emperors who claimed to be progressive but were clinging on to ideas that would further their own agendas. They were called enlightened despots. Catherine the Great was one of those rulers. She had many great ideas and was seen by most of her people as a friend of Enlightenment. However, she had a greater desire to be views as an enlightened leader, rather than actually being one. When Catherine suspended meetings of a Legislative Committee aimed at giving a voice to all due to her lack of order, it led many to believe that there were aspects of her persona that were simply for show (Boeve, Schrijvers, Stoker, & Vroom, 2006). • 19. Essay on Indigenous Religions of the World Indigenous religions exist in every climate around the world and exhibit a wide range of differences in their stories, language, customs, and views of the afterlife. Within indigenous communities, religion, social behavior, art, and music are so intertwined that their religion is a significant part of their culture and virtually inseparable from it. These religions originally developed and thrived in isolation from one another and are some of the earliest examples of religious practice and belief. The modern world; however, has taken its toll on these groups and many of their stories, customs, and beliefs have been lost to, or replaced by, those brought in as a result of popular culture and the missionary work of Christians and Muslims. ... Sadly, indigenous languages around the world are dying off at an alarming rate. It is estimated that nearly half of the languages spoken today are likely to die off within the next century if steps are not taken to preserve those which still exist. Recently, researchers working on a project geared toward the cataloging of basic word lists of the endangered aboriginal tongues in Australia, "met the sole living speaker of Amurdag, a language in the Northern Territory that has already been declared extinct" (Wilford, John Noble). It is doubtful that the language can be brought back, as the speaker "strained to recall words he had last heard from his late father" (Wilford, John Noble) but researchers were at least able to make a record of it. In addition to the loss of culture and language for indigenous people, they are also experiencing the loss of their traditional lands and native environment. For indigenous people, much personal and group meaning comes from the natural environment and as a result, their religious practices are deeply rooted in the environment in which they live. When the environment that they rely on is taken away for development, both their cultural and religious identity suffers. Very few places exist today in which indigenous people can live ... As a former student of a private Bible college and a member of a Christian semi–cult in the Bay Area, I did not view the study of world religions as an innocuous or trivial activity. Classes in my college that taught about other religions were called "apologetics." In these classes, through a biased world view, our mentors taught us how to present people with logical and persuasive arguments that would win them over to the only "true" belief. Coercive classroom teaching was reinforced by Scriptures such as, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth,"(2 Timothy 2:15)1 and "...be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you..."(1 Peter 3:15).2 The Scripture found in Hebrews 13:17, "Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves..."3 provided the cult leaders with the clout to send us out three times a week canvassing door to door and on street corners for converts. ... Since then, millions of people have joined in as followers. The religion itself is broken down into two main branches, Theravada and the Mahayana. Both teachings of Buddha but just different expressions. Buddha preached what has become known as the core of Buddhism, the four noble truths: 1. there is suffering, 2. the cause of suffering is desire, and 3. there is a way to overcome desire and become free from suffering, and 4. the eightfold path leads to freedom from suffering. Religion has brought people closer than ever before, An example is how close America became during 9 /11. That day America was united as a whole. Religion has also had its down right degrading moments. The holocaust, is one of the most disturbing and screwed up things to ever happen to a group of people because of who they believe in. As Stephen Prothero says on page 7 of God Is Not One "Unfortunately, we live in a world where religion seems as likely to detonate a bomb as to defuse one." This idea is actually factual in a way, When it comes to religion, it seems that most people want to argue about what religion is better and try to convert others than talk about it. • 27. World Religions: Comparative Discussions World Religions: Comparative Discussions 1.Compare and contrast Hinduism and Buddhism on the question of atman. What does each tradition have to say about whether a human being has an individual soul? What is the significance of this soul (or lack thereof) in each tradition? The concept of the 'self' is critical to a great many religious traditions. Understanding one's own individual position within the context of the universe helps to drive one's relationship to the divine, to the pedestrian and to one's fellow man. This is the orientation that helps define atman in the Hindu tradition. Here, this layered 'self' is a critical dimension of one's spiritual enlightenment. Finding and recognizing one's 'permanent self' from within is an essential part of this path. A concept tantamount to the soul, the atman is, in Hindu tradition, said to be the vestige of humanity that remains even when the body is expired. This makes it an essential premise also of transferring the self during the cycle of reincarnation. As to its fundamental importance to the spiritual tradition, Wangu (2010) notes that "an unwise person is unaware of atman, and has no spiritual guidance. He follows his ego and thinks he "knows" himself. With uncontrolled mind and untrained senses he is like a wildly flickering flame in a storm. The wise person, on the other hand, is like a steady flame in a windless place." (Wangu, p. 1) This characterization is actually a sharp departure, however, from how questions ... • 28. Religion And The Modern World Essay Religions and civilization have always gone hand in hand, forming and evolving as time goes on. With so many various religions represented throughout history and in our diverse cultures, there are various subjects, ideas, and themes depicted and repeated. With so many concepts available to us in so many forms, we are able to easily compare and discuss their presence and how they integrate into concepts of the modern world. Two forms of religion are animism versus anthropocentrism. Animistic religions are the oldest kind of religion (though only ten percent of the world currently practice) and maintains the belief that everything around us has a soul – animals, plants, the elements. Animistic religions view everything as sacred, so the Earth and those who inhabit deserve to be treated with respect. Anthropocentric religions, however, hold a drastically different opinion. While animistic religions view all as sacred, anthropocentric religions, such as Christianity, believe that only humans have a soul, placing them on a pedestal and regarding them as something superior to all other lifeforms. Due to the beliefs of anthropocentric religions, it can be argued that they benefit the capitalist economy. The capitalist economy likes to turn anything and everything possible into a profit, and by placing humans on a pedestal and viewing everything else as a lesser being, anthropocentric religions allow the exploitation of natural resources without the accompanying guilt of ... Water is used as a means of purification in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The desert is also and example. It is often considered to be a means of spiritual refinement. The ecology of religion is of great importance. The processes of nature become ritualized in attempt to change the processes or powers behind them. Simple ethnic religions, especially, are built around cycles of nature as fertility rituals. The more complex the religion becomes, the more complex the type of ritual practiced becomes. Denying the fact that man worshipping God does not play a good percentage in the role of defining religion would be wrong but in saying this though this particular definition looks into the fulfilment that one gets from worshipping God as a whole yet it fails to recognise the different aspects or dimensions of religion such as the emotionality of it, the traditional roles that are practiced within it and the importance of the faith circulating it.
