Question 3
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why?
By Kane Torbett
2. Distribution
• Places like WHsmiths and newsagents might distribute hard
(physical) copies of my product once my product has been
published by a place such as IPC media. This is because
most people still go straight to the shops if they want a
magazine, and this will then make my magazine easy to
reach the audience. These days supermarkets such as Tesco
are becoming big sellers of magazines, this is why I would
ensure that my magazine is being sold in big chain
supermarkets.
• I feel that being published by IPC media and distributing my
product at places such as supermarkets, Whsmiths and
newsagent is a good idea because I will be able to reach my
target audience with ease.
3. Bookstores
• Obviously most bookstores are going to be
selling some sorts of magazines which is why I
feel as if my magazine would be distributed in
bookstore. Especially seeing that my magazine
appeals to a niche audience, bookstores are
more willing to sell to attract customers. This
also meaning that I can widen the base of my
audience.
4. Record stores
• Record shops are all about music so it just
makes sense to distribute my magazine in a
record shop, because while people are going
to be looking at a particular genre of music
they might see a magazine and pick it up to
see what new material there is, what new
artists there are and so that they can find out
how and where to get their music.
5. Big chain supermarkets
• Most people these days are going to
supermarkets to get their magazines because
supermarkets are now one of the biggest
distributers of magazines. This would be effective
because when people go to these supermarkets
for their daily/weekly shops they might see the
magazine a pick it up just to have something to
read, even if it doesn’t really appeal to them.
Most supermarkets sell popular magazines (to
make the most money they can), I am assuming
that my magazine would be popular because of
the nature of the genre.
6. Newsagents
• Newsagents are one of the traditional ways of
distributing a magazine, so to still appeal to
the older subset it would be a good idea to
have newsagents distribute my product.
Newsagents are quite handy for a distributer
because children tend to go in there to buy
things like sweets with their parents.
7. Promotion
• My magazine could be promoted by advertising it
on the sides of buses, billboards, and in train
stations. This would be effective because a wide
range of people use public transport and are
affected by these images. By using visual media I
will be able to make my audience aware of my
magazine as well as reminding them to buy it.
From promoting my magazine in this way I can
then move on to using different mediums such as
TV, radio and having people hand out
flyers/leaflets about my magazine and where to
get it.
