The magazine would be published by either Hearst Corporation or Mark Allen Group. Hearst publishes magazines focused on females like Cosmopolitan, while Mark Allen Group focuses solely on music magazines with a broader demographic. The magazine would be distributed at music stores like HMV and African clothing shops like Pepamsie. It would be circulated monthly and available through paid subscriptions of £3.99 per issue or individual issue purchases. While magazines in the genre of world music do not sell well overall, the publisher of Song Lines magazine that focuses on world music has seen revenue of £18.9 million and pre-tax profits increase 63% despite offering free CDs with the magazine. Q3
1. Q3. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product?
2. What publishing house might own
your magazine?
The publishing houses that I would consider to publish my magazine would be
either Hearst Corporation or Mark Allen group. Since Hearst Corporation is the
publisher of magazines such as Cosmopolitan, it would be geared towards females
especially young females, which is the demographic I am more drawn too.
However it is not considered with music Magazines unlike Mark Allen Group as it
focuses solely on music magazines and other media related issues this publisher
puts my magazine in a more boarder demographic as it deals with a magazine e.g.
song lines which deals with world music, this is perfect as it deals with all different
type of music as they have also a broader focus in the magazines they focus from
world music “song lines” to classical music “gramophone”.
3. Where your magazine might be
distributed?
My magazine would be sold in music stores such as HMV or African
clothe shops such as Pepamsie, as they are most associated to what
the popular Traditional African artist would wear and also they are
free to pick up, this would be a viable marketing tool for a clothing
store like this.
4. How frequently will the magazine be
circulated? Will it be available through
subscription?
My magazine will be circulated every
month, as is indicted at the front of my
magazine, my magazine is available
through subscriptions and is a paid
magazine at £3.99, hence the barcode
being present. This magazine can also
be bought in shops if the consumer
does not ant to pay monthly. They can
Purchase a Monthly magazine at there
own time.
5. What data have you got on magazine sales in
your chosen genre- are magazines in your genre
selling well?
In my chosen genre, Magazine does not sell well, because they are not sold
at all for example Song lines magazine is circulated 8 times a year with free
CD. Again the publishing house who publishes this magazine is still making
revenue at £18.9 million and pre-tax profit leapt 63% from £1.4 million to
£2.3 million. However the free circulation works for song lines as awards
have been given to there magazine.
6. What is the magazine website like? How popular
is it? Is the material in the magazine exclusive to
the printed version?
The magazine website is easy to navigate and very
minimal and simplistic. It is quite popular and the
visiting numbers are growing day by day. The material
in the magazine is exclusive to the printed version as it
is yet to have a online version of the magazine.
