Title of the Work: Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West
Author: Gregory Maguire
Date of Publication: 1995 (2007)
Genre: Novel
Historical information about the Setting: This novel is a fictional novel so there's no exact historical
setting but there is some similarities in the story to our history. Dabbling in the "pleasure faith",
persecuting people were some of the things that happened in Munchkinland and that resembles what
was happening in Europe and roughly, America from the 1500s to the 1700s. Those were the years
of the Protestant Reformation which was an uncontrollable religious frenzy led to wars and
persecution. The author described Emerald City as a place of political oppression, corruption,
danger, etc.
Plot summary: Frex who is a minister who has a sermon to give today and Melena who is a
housewife, is pregnant with Elphaba who turns out to be born green. They hide out in a house in the
woods. Turtle Heart who is a Quadling that is having an affair with Melina, makes a magic mirror
for Elphaba. A character named Galinda goes to Shiz University and ends up having Elphaba as her
roommate. There is a tea party/ poetry slam that Madam Morrible is hosting and Boq who was
Elphaba's childhood friend, goes up to her to introduce himself but she acts rudely to him and then
leaves. Mr. Dillamond is a goat that is a professor at the college for girls so this implies that he is

Liir And Elphaba In The Murder And Its Aftermath
In the chapter, "The Murder and Its Aftermath," Liir asks his mother what does she want, while the
others like "the Lion wants courage, the Tin Man a heart, and the Scarecrow brains. Dorothy wants
to go home" (Maguire 231). Her response is to have "a soul", while Liir wants a father. In this
chapter, it is the first time Liir and Elphaba have a heart to heart conversation. It seems Liir always
wanted a father figure in his life, as Elphaba did not play a motherly role in his life. His question to
his mother catches her off guard and leaves her staying up all night thinking what she said to Liir.
All night, she keeps referring back to the idea of religion, the Unnamed God. Later, she thinks about
Fiyero and how he might be in disguise and wants

lifetime achievement awards. The show Wicked opened in 2003 and as of 2013 is the 12th longest
running show in Broadway history. Wicked was immediately a sensation among the people, but the
critics did not feel the same. Luckily, there was enough street buzz about the show to keep the
showing alive. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For some time now I have been very interested in the musical Wicked, even though I have yet to
watch the entire musical. Ever since I heard Idina Menzel sing defying gravity live I have been
emotionally connected to Wicked for some strange reason, and I have taken the time to listen to
every song from the musical. I realize that it will be hard to learn and become my character without
actually seeing the musical so I will be taking the time to watch it before the performance. As we
were doing strike for legally blonde, I was playing the musical channel on Pandora and the song The
Wizard and I started playing, and I immediately knew that was the song for me. I could really see
the scene unfold as I was listening to the song, and I felt the emotion as she sang. It did not take
long for me to come up with blocking for the scene seeing as not very much I needed. I felt the
natural movement of the scene just by listening to it. This song is the turning point for Elphaba and I
love getting to become that

Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis
We all have felt the pain of a broken a heart and it's fair to say it is the most wicked thing to exist. A
broken heart has the power to change one's life completely whether it be for the good, for the bad, or
a just a new road. In the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire a change in the main character's heart
turned into the death of a loved one and disarrangement of her entire life. But to get into this you
need to know the beginning. Elphaba was born in Munchkinland, her dad a preacher of sorts and her
mom the granddaughter of the ruler of Munchkinland. Elphaba was born with green skin which
caused her to be discriminated against from a young age even by her own parents. Later on she went
to college and there she met what would be her best friends

Similarities Between Wizard Of Oz And Wicked
Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Two very different stories both sharing the same characters and setting.
The two plots are so masterfully intertwined, but showing two very different points of view.
Although they share so many similarities, relationships and conflicts between the two are very
different. Glinda maybe isn't so good after all, Elphaba was just trying to do what was right, and the
Wizard was the real villain all along. To truly see things as they really are, both sides of a story must
be acknowledged and understood, or else someone else's story will be lost.
The Wizard of Oz is a classic known by all. The plot is fairly simple. Poor bored Dorothy is sick of
her normal boring life on her Aunt and Uncles farm in Kansas and decides to run away to a more
exciting life. Her plans are changed when she meets a fortune teller who convinces her to go back
home. Unfortunately, as she is headed back home a horrible storm starts and she and her dog Toto
are blown away, along with her house. When she lands, she comes outside to see that she has landed
on a person with red shoes. She is met by tiny people and a witch called Glinda who tells her that
she has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy tells Glinda she wants to go
home, and Glinda tells her if she follows the yellow brick road she will end up in the Emerald City
where the Wonderful Wizard of Oz can help get her home.
Along the yellow brick road, she meets a scarecrow who wants a brain, a tin man who

Wicked By Gregory Maguire: Novel Analysis
It's Not Easy Being Green The Wizard of Oz is one of the world's most well known and cherished
stories. It shows how the heroic Dorothy fights against the Wicked Witch of the West, making it one
of the most popular good versus evil tales. The novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked
Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, tells the unknown story of the Wicked Witch of the West
named Elphaba. Following her childhood, the story recounts Elphaba's struggles growing up
because she is green. Maguire implants many issues from real life like skin color, religion, and
discrimination into the recognizable world of Oz. In Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked, Maguire uses
Elphaba's skin color to show how society's favorability of white over other skin ... Show more

While Elphaba experiences prejudice from the society around her, her parents have shamed her
since birth. Once she was born, her parents worked to get rid of her green skin. They thought it was
like a disease that needs to be cured, and they try different treatments. The Nanny remarks that,
"'peasant treatments don't work... and spiritual intercession has failed. Do you have the courage to
think about sorcery? Is there someone local who could magic the green venom out of the child?'"
(Maguire 32). Like the parents, the Nanny also believes that Elphaba's green skin is a curse.
Although Elphaba is human in every other way, her green skin takes away her humanity. The Nanny
thinks to herself that "the skin was green as sin. Not an ugly color. Just not a human color" (Maguire
27). Her family can not accept Elphaba because of her skin color; they barely see her as human.
Their lack of support and understanding hurts Elphaba by making her lose self–confidence and
support that she needs to live in a prejudiced world outside her home. Instead, the discrimination
extends to her own parents and Nanny who just mirror the cruel world Elphaba lives in.
Additionally, the Nanny reveals that since "[Elphaba had] been born an unfortunate color. [A gypsy
women] gave me some powerful pills. I've always wondered if the pills were the cause of
Nessarose's affliction" (Maguire 300).

Wicked Play Character Analysis
Friendships are tested when struggles come into play. The play of Wicked brings in fantastic moral
lessons for the readers to ponder. It provides issues that are relevant to today's society and it can
help one be aware of some tricky situations that they may encounter throughout an individual's life.
The characters in the play may not go about the matters exceedingly well, but that does not mean
that someone cannot learn from the mistakes of how the situations were handled. The struggles that
were faced entailed that relationships are far better than being popular, everyone makes mistakes but
not everyone takes responsibility for their mistakes, and one is bound to be used or manipulated at
least once in their life time. Being popular ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

something and then all the sudden they turn on them because they want what they desire instead.
Elphaba wanted to be with the Wizard because she desired to help the animals of Oz and she
thought that once someone was with the Wizard everyone will perceive them differently; they will
not think they are weird or strange. People do not always do things for the right reasons, "You can't!
Spells are irreversible! I knew she had the power, I told you!" (Holzman 1.15) Once Elphaba figured
out that Madame Morrible and the Wizard were using her for their devious plan, she felt hurt
because she was manipulated by the people she thought she could trust. A lot of times the people

Wicked By Gregory Maguire Character Traits
Frex's character, in Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked is described as a charlatan. Maguire creates a
complex character in Frex, who is a minister that misleads people by getting them to believe in
something that is untrue. He also uses connotation for setting stronger words that impact his
descriptions towards Frex. Maguire also creates a complex character for Elphaba, who is described
as peculiar, or strange and doesn't seem at all like a normal person. Many things make Frex a
charlatan. For instance, his own wife Melina says to their daughter on page 32 : "Your father is a
charlatan." A charlatan is someone who is dishonest or a fraud. Instead of saying: "Your father is a
fraud," Maguire chooses the word charlatan because although both words mean are similar,
"charlatan" is stronger and has a more negative impact towards Frex. Another ... Show more content

For instance, on pages 19–20 it says: "... the infant glistened a scandalous shade of green
emerald...an undeniable green cast to the skin." Most babies aren't born green, and even more
shocking, Elphaba bites off the fishwife's finger with her unbelievably sharp teeth. On page 20 it
states : "The child bit the finger off at the second knuckle." This is also unusual because most babies
don't have teeth, especially razor sharp ones. Even later in the book, it states that as a child, Elphaba
bit everything she saw. Another strange thing about Elphaba was that she seemed to avoid water at
all costs. On page 113 it states: "Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even the
scattering of drops." Also, on page 185, Fiero asks if there was something to drink and Elphaba
responds: "I don't have running water. I don't use it." This shows that Elphaba is peculiar because
normal people need water to live and use it in their everyday lives to drink, cook, and and bathe. On
the other hand, Elphaba is very resistant to come in contact with water, almost as if she was

Fast forward and Elphaba has become part of the underground who wanted to take down the wizard.
She began to have an affair with her college friend Fiyero. This was the first time Elphaba truly
showed love towards somebody as her personality was a little cold, logical, and rebellious.
Elphaba's rebellious actions would lead to difficulty later on when she refused to kill innocent
children as a casualty to her previous headmistress Madame Morrible, the reader later learns that
Fiyero was killed as a punishment to Elphaba showing that her lesson was learned too late to save
the love of her life and she becomes forlorn , not only does she lose Fiyero but her self identity is
gone and she has a negative view of herself because her dad has taught her it was wrong , also you

Power In Wicked Maguire
Words such as strength, control, and ability may come to mind when one thinks of the word power,
but power is a word that does not only bring words to mind. The word power can also bring to mind
vivid images. Images such as a superhero saving the day or even a hometown hero, such as a
paramedic or police officer who saves the day by sparing lives daily. Nevertheless, power is the
desire of all humanity. It is apparent through human's actions, that life revolves around gaining
power, maintaining power, and even forfeiting power. Even in the glorious land of Oz, the bonds to
power are inescapable. Through the powerful female characters in Wicked, Maguire explores the
challenges that those with power are faced with and the way the ... Show more content on

From the beginning of her life, Elphaba is already an abnormality. "Beneath the spit of the mother's
fluids the infant glistened a scandalous shade of pale emerald" (19). The color of Elphaba's skin is
only the beginning of her differences from other women. Elphaba does not allow others to
characterize who she is or who she should be. Madame Morrible, the head mistress at Shiz
University attempts to design the life she wants Elphaba, Nessarose and Galinda to live, but fails
when it comes to Elphaba. "I want you to consider your futures. I would like to name you, to baptize
you as it were, as a trio of adepts" (159). Elphaba from a young age faces a battle between the world
of good and evil doings. She questions the nature of all things good and if one is actually born evil.

That's Elphaba Play Analysis
"Who is she"? My mother whispered into my ear with a bewildered expression on her face. "That's
Elphaba" I replied and watched her sit back a little more bewildered into her seat. Questions
continued well into the first act of the play. During our 15 minute intermission I was able to answer
my mother's questions and pinpoint her confusion. No, Dorothy and Toto are not the stars of this
play and the munchkins will not be singing about a yellow brick road. How many other audience
members were expecting a take on the Wizard of Oz? Gregory McGuire wrote Wicked, a fantasy
novel imagining life before Kansas and the tornado that brought Dorothy to Oz. Stephen Schwartz
and Winnie Holzman then adapted this novel for the stage and Broadway across Columbus ... Show

When the flying monkeys take over the stage the lighting dims and focuses on the shaking cages.
Emerald City (home to the Wizard) is awash in green light and the cast is dressed in all green
costumes for unity. To amplify the illusion of Glinda's goodness she floats around in a bubble and is
dressed in soft pastels in comparison to Elphaba's black frock. The main theme for props throughout
were the vintage industrial gears and clock references. The music is the real show stealer of Wicked.
Most of the best songs are in the first half when the characters belt out amusing songs like "Popular"
and "What is this feeling". With the help of the chorus, Elpheba is literally raised up to the rafters of
the stage while singing the best song of the play "Defying gravity". While there were good moments
in the second half and the two actresses singing in unison in parts and complimenting each other
through other songs, post–intermission was tamer musically.
Through the music and scenery of Wicked the audience is exposed to a few elements of "The
Wizard of Oz". They show how the scarecrow, lion and tinman came to be and Glinda crosses
Dorothy's path a couple of times. These moments are subtle, adding an ironic and quirky touch to
the play. Wicked does not need to rely on the original to make it special, the characters set and
music make the case for this new take on

Elphaba Discrimination
Question– Does the selection show you what it is like to experience racism, loneliness, and so on. In
the book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," written by Gregory
Maguire, there is a main idea expressed throughout. The idea is racism and its effects on others.
Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, experiences racism with open, prejudiced views on her
green skin and her overall appearance. Another form of the idea of racism is expressed through the
Bann of Animal Rights and Mobility throughout the book. An Animal is just like a human, but their
physical anatomy is that of an animal. Since she was born, Elphaba has had green skin, and she has
had to live with it. Her tall, thin and bony body is strange for someone ... Show more content on

Glinda's friends weren't very kind, although Glinda wasn't either at that time. She disliked Elphaba,
but for what reason? Elphaba had never insulted Glinda; she had always been kind and polite to the
bratty Gilikun girl, who had gone by Galinda at the time. But why, then would she mistreat her?
Without even using words, Glinda expressed her hatred for Elphaba based on her skin, how humbly
she dressed, and her bony figure. She made fun of her behind her back, and always discussed it with
a smirk on her face to her fellow bratty friends. The worst prank was pulled on Elphaba by one of
these girls, Pfannee. "'I believe I have been set up to be mortified,' said Galinda, glaring at the
helpless Pfannee. 'I am being humiliated for sport. This is not funny, Miss Pfannee! I have a mind
to–to kick you!'" (Maguire 122) Here, Galinda is shocked by the letter Pfannee had written to
Elphaba to get her to come up to the lake house they were at. "'Were you born to plague me?'
Galinda said tearfully to her roomie. 'Did I ask for your association?'" (Maguire 122) Galinda seems
to feel insulted by Pfannee that she'd do something so horrible. That she'd even try to invite the
thing, as they see Elphaba as. "'Oh, dear no, I did not,' said Galinda, IN her anger, she was beginning
to regain some control, even though, Boq guessed, damage had been done for good. 'My darling
Miss Elphaba, I wouldn't have dreamed of exposing you to such thoughtless cruelties as these girls
perpetuate on each other and on me for sheer amusement. Besides, you have no place in a setting
like this.'" (Maguire 122) After Elphaba finally asked if Galinda wrote it to her, having guessed the
answer already, this was Galinda's fit about it. She was nice about wishing to not expose Elphaba to
her friend's crude jokes, but then she said that Elphaba wasn't fit to be in such a nice place.

Compare And Contrast Wizard Of Oz
Have you ever seen or been to a musical before? There are so many musicals out there I don't know
if it is possible to see them all. The music and storylines of the musicals are all so unique to one
another, but at the same time can be similar to one another in various ways. Two musicals I have
seen include some of the same characters, but tell two different stories because of the point of view.
One of the musicals I just mentioned is Wizard of Oz and the other one is Wicked. The three areas
of comparison for these two musicals are the how they came to be, the characters, and the plot. The
musical, Wizard of Oz, is based off the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
written in 1900. It's about a girl, Dorothy, who is tired of living ... Show more content on

different books with two different authors, written almost a century apart. The Wonderful Wizard of

Relationships In The Play Wicked
"Well if that's love, it comes at much to high a cost." Wicked is about the life of Elphaba before and
after she became the Wicked Witch of the West. It follows Elphaba as she goes to Shiz University
and she meets and becomes friends with Galinda, soon to be Glinda. It also shows you her journey
to Oz and her interactions with the Wizard. She leaves Oz and Glinda and struggles to maintain her
values and her beliefs. In the play Wicked by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz, Holzman and
Schwartz illustrate the theme of love by looking at relationships, family, and mentors. There were
many examples of relationships in the play Wicked. One of the examples is the relationship between
Glinda and Fiyero. Though they think they "deserve" each other, ... Show more content on

The very first moment Elphaba's father sees her, he rejects her. "Take it away. Take it away!" From
that moment on, their relationship suffers, even to the point that Elphaba can tell her father blames
her and is disappointed in her. "My father hates me...he has a good reason. It's my fault...The reason
my sister is the way she is. You see, when our mother was carrying Nessa, my father began to worry
that the new baby might come out...green... He was so worried he made our mother chew milk
flowers day and night. Only it made Nessa come too soon, with her little legs all tangled. And our
mother never woke up. None of which would have ever happened if not for me." Out of all her
family members though, Elphaba was closest with Nessa, and even she took Elphaba for granted.
"After he learned what you'd done! How you disgraced us...Oh, Elphaba, shut up! First of all, I can't

Comparing Evil In Wicked And Lord Of The Rings
Sometimes what can't be seen, can still be dangerous. To start, Alice in Zombieland by Gena
Showalter shows that evils can be deceiving, even in a perfect world. Next, Wicked by Gregory
Maguire shows that there will always be a fight between good and evil. Then, Salems by Stephen
King shows that ordinary people can turn evil by night. While, Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of
the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien shows that people are looking to purge evil from society. In the end, all
of these novels carry the message that hidden evils can be overlooked by oblivious people.
Firstly, there will always be a fight between good and evil; this is shown many times throughout
Wicked by Gregory Maguire. Wicked is about Elphaba better known as the Wicked Witch of ...

It shows her point of view and what happened before Dorothy fell from the sky. To begin with,
doing something good or bad doesn't make you that type of person. Fireyo ran into Elphaba years
after she suddenly left Shiz, and she refused to show any form of knowing him: "You're in trouble,
let me in. You're in trouble. Stay out." (Maguire 236). Though most people saw Elphaba to be a bad
person, but all she wanted to do was keep the people she cared about safe. Elphaba knew that if she
let anyone into her life, they would get hurt. So she pushed them all away. Next, a person can be
fighting a bigger issue without knowing it. When Amas Clutch got sick, she was just fighting herself
to stay alive for Glinda, but for Elphaba she was helping her fight Madame Morrible and her views
on Animals:" she scrutinized them. They were the goods." (Maguire 202). Madame Morrible made
all of Oz look evil by the way she acted towards professors and students. Many people wouldn't

The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West
Imagine a child that was born with a bright green tint to their skin and had razor sharp teeth. This
happened to Melena Thropp in the book The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,
written by Gregory McGuire. The Broadway musical "Wicked," by Winnie Holzman, was based on
this novel. When it made its debut it astounded the world as it won many awards. "Wicked" draws
in many people because they can relate to the feeling of being ostracized the way Elphaba was. In
the 21st century, musicals have progressed along with technology due to the use of new special
effects in musicals today. The New Millennium marks the beginning of the 21st century. On
September 9th 2001 one of the most horrific events had occurred (History.com Staff). Al–Qaeda
terrorists had taken over four planes. The terrorists had purposely crashed two of the planes into the
Twin Towers. A third plane had then been crashed into the Pentagon. The first plane had crashed at
8:46 in the morning. The plane had crashed between the 80th and 110th floor. 18 minutes after the
first crash another plane had crashed into the south tower near the 60th floor. Fifteen minutes later
the south tower collapsed causing a huge cloud of dust to arrive. At 10:30 a.m. the second tower
collapsed. 3000 people were killed in this disaster (History.com Staff). It is a day America will never
forget. One thing that has really progressed in the 21st century is the technology. In 2005 YouTube

Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis
The author of Wicked,Gregory Maguire wrote his story to be engaging in many levels.Firstly, he
uses expanded detail that engages readers who love background. Similarly, his writing is high
quality and contains many similes, metaphors and personification. His characters are also very
consistent in their beliefs. You can tell a what characters opinion will be just by how much you
know about them. Finally, his writing is occasionally incredibly humorous, and one wants to keep
reading, just to be able to laugh again.
In Wicked,Liir, Elphaba's (perhaps) son, grows up from a whimpering child, to a headstrong
teenager. When we first meet Liir, he is constantly silent and when he meets Sarina's children, he is
scared of them. Developing through the pain and loss he suffers (like nearly dieing in the fishing

She begins as a shallow naive girl, who when her maid gets hurt, rather than having sympathy, she
complains for her not being able to assist her. However, after spending time with Elphaba, she learns
to become less superficial and becomes a better person.
In Wicked, Elphaba learns the importance of companionship. She had spent her whole life pushing
people away, but when she reunites with Feiro, she realizes how much she needs people in her life,
and mourns her for her entire life. Again, when Sarima and her family are kidnapped, Elphaba
spends seven and a half years looking for them. Though she won't admit it, she needs people (and
her animals) to keep her happy.
The title Wicked symbolizes the belief of what wicked truly is. Many people believe that Elphaba is
wicked, so much so that she starts believing it too. In truth, Elphaba is a unhappy, truthful to fault,
stubborn, strong hearted girl. The contrast between good and evil is far more complicated than one

Wicked: The Real Elphaba Essay
In Gregory Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West happen
before the novel by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In Baum's novel of The
Wonderful Wizard of Oz, portrays the role of the Wicked Witch of the West being wicked. We have
no background or personal preference to understand her life of the Wicked Witch of the West (as
known as Elphaba). But in Maguire's novel, Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the
West, shows how Elphaba traits of a monster are similar to a typical monster that portrays in
people's eye. Elphaba is an ideal model of what we see in a monster would be like: abnormal, scary
looking, and blunt behavior. She is a target of gossip to those who do not even know ... Show more

She could also go to the extreme trying to save animal civil rights because of what she believes in,
even if it means to have no one to support her. She was coldly rejected when she tried to ask the
Wizard for assistance, but ended revolting against him to save the remaining animals that were
tortured and brutally killed. As you can tell, the image of the Wizard of Oz is not so welcoming
compared to Maguire's novel versus Buam's novel. Elphaba plays a very extraordinary female role
compared to a traditional female role Galinda (as known as Glinda). Glinda was mean, conceited,
rude, sociable, pretty and popular woman in college, compared to Elphaba was ugly, an outcast, and
unsociable with the students. Elphaba was able to attend school and later be friends with Glinda and
Boq, usually Wicked Witch does not have many friends, and tends to be living in loneliness and
dreadful life. Glinda attempts to make Elphaba and not be an outcast, but as a lovable Wicked
Witch. It failed because of her blunt behavior and personality. Even though Glinda was mean and
conceited in a way, she surpassed it with her beauty and social skills, while Elphaba was always
criticized and look down at from the students. Glinda said, "Please, it is Galinda" and mocked her
professor, Dr. Dillamond, "She could not bring herself to call him sir. Not with that horrid goatee
and the tatty waistcoat that looked but from some public house carpet" (Maguire 66). In contrast

Good And Evil In Gregory Maguire's Wicked
Anger and evil are main emotion that are portrayed in the book Wicked. These emotions are clear in
Gregory Maguire's famous novel, Wicked, which was published in 1995 and takes place in the Land
of Oz. This novel is one of Maguire's bestselling books and in 2003 they decided to turn it into a
musical and to this day it still gets performed to this day. Now Wicked is based on Oz therefor in the
book there are many things that tie together the two books. Wicked is supposed to be a better
version of The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz was written many years before Wicked even though
when looking at a timeline it shows Wicked should be first, then Oz. The book revolves around

Elphaba because Glinda brings the evil out in Elphaba and that is not a good thing because she
makes her feel poorly of herself and no one wants to feel that way. Elphaba also becomes very
jealous of Glinda and that is a start to another conflict between the two of them. Then end up turning
against each other and they are enemies. Good vs. Evil would be another popular theme in the book
and it can go along with the first one pretty well because it's about the same characters. The good
witch brings out the evil in the wicked witch. Now when you really think about this theme you have
to realize that this whole book basically says everyone is evil. But you have to purposely want to be
evil you can't just accidentally do that. When it comes to goodness you have to practice that over
time it doesn't just come naturally. If Elphaba actually practiced being nice she would've had more
friends by the end and less enemies. But it was the other way around and that is fine but by the end
of the book she wasn't alive. No one could put up with how she treated others and people could see
that she wasn't going to change no matter if they thought she would. The book Wicked presents
many different themes but the ones that I pulled out really stuck with me and it described the layout

Relationship Between Elphaba And Glinda
Stacy Wolf's main argument is that the Wicked was about queer romantic relationship of Elphaba
and Glinda that why the young generation connected with it. Stacy compare Wicked to movies and
TV shows that teens loves. She mention how Wicked went even farther that just portraying women
as powerful and friendship by a queer romance between Elphaba and Glinda.
One evidence is when she bring expert opinions of the Scholars of musical theatre and film and also
gay/lesbian/queer studies to use their research of the multiple ways in which musicals signify
queerly. Then she determine that the logo of the dresses and their position is evidence of queerly
between Elphaba and Glinda. (Page 5)

Wicked Book Report
Pre–Reading Wicked, & The Wonderful Wizard of Oz I never really liked The Wonderful Wizard of
Oz. The lion, scarecrow, and tin man were all characters that kind of freaked me. I think this had to
do with their costumes, the lions faces creeped me out. As of Wicked I now there is a musical,
which I have not seen. Overall, I am kind of excited to read the book. While Reading Wicked So the
book starts out with a prologue of the witch spying on the Lion, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Dorothy.
As the story continues, Elphaba who was born with green skin grew up living a rough childhood.
Elphaba green skin made her stick out and be an outcast. Elphaba had a sister named Nessarose.
Elphaba attends college later with her sister Nessarose. During these years Elphaba meet Galinda
who is very beautiful, at first the two didn't like each there, but slowly their friendship grew.
Elphaba also started to be mentored by Dr. Dillamond, this partnership caused Elphaba to become
more passionate about animals. After Dr. Dillamons death, she goes to Emerald City to petition for

Character Analysis Of Wicked
Allyson Magallanes
Period 5
Character Analysis Essay
Wicked, created by Winnie Holzman, is a musical is centered around a story of a misunderstood
outcast Elphaba Thropp, as told by her frenemy G(a)linda Upland. The story begins with an affair
that Elphaba's mother has with a "green" man who forces her to drink a green elixir. Later the elixir
is revealed to be the reason why Elphaba's skin is green. Elphaba is nearsighted and a bit of a nerd
in terms of appearance but even more so with her intelligence being her strongest suit. Throughout
the story, her wisdom appears more providently when dragged into making reasonable decisions and
who to befriend. Wicked follows Elphaba's many trials of discrimination and prejudice.
At first glance, you instantly know that Elphaba is smart and full of determination. She meets
Galinda, who is uncomfortable around Elphaba due both to her green complexion and lack of social
standing. She also meets Professor Dillamond who is also discriminated against for being different
by his own students. Elphaba empathizes with him and she takes a stand for talking animal rights.
Elphaba is also very protective of her sister, Nessarose. She thinks of herself as the reason why her
sister is the way she is and blames herself when explaining to Galinda. From this, we can tell that
Elphaba has very low self–esteem. As much as she wants to believe that she doesn't care what
people think, it's obvious how appreciated she feels when Galinda joins her on the

Elphaba is famous for bribery, harming and holding captive her enemies and people who are a threat

The Wicked Witch of the West also holds grudges, likes to get revenge and can be very scary. In the

Dorothy explains that it was an accident but Elphaba replies: "Well, my little pretty, I can cause

The Wicked Musical
Musicals were originally developed in the 20th century with the purpose to entertain, however, they
have surpassed this and have accomplished to entwine with the emotions of an audience group
through the manipulation of certain musical elements. One of the musicals that correspond to an
unadulterated musical is The Wicked. The wicked is based on a book by Winnie Holzman with the
Music and Lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. The musical focuses on the basis of an unlikely
friendship and who struggle with opposing viewpoints, personalities and rivalry. This friendship is
shown through the pop melodies with an addition of sophisticated musical theatre song construction.
This combination allows for the musical to obtain a severe plot, however, maintains the audience's
attention. The unique combination of pop melodies with sophisticated musical techniques along
with complex use of musical elements allows the songs within the musical to depict a profounder
meaning than what is originally perceived. This is depicted well in the song The wizard and I as it
uses complex musical elements along with sophisticated musical techniques.
The song The wizard and I is the 3 piece of the musical, expanding on the notion of Elphaba's
dreams in which Elphaba and the Wizard accomplish great things that could be the useful to the
Wizard of Oz.
The song starts off with a short soliloquy performed by Elphaba (insert Time) in which Elphaba

What Does Gregory Maguire's Wicked Mean
The book Wicked written by Gregory Maguire is much like the classic story The Wizard of Oz.
Instead of seeing the story through Dorothy's perspective, it is seen through Elphaba the Wicked
Witch of the West's eyes. When reading a narrative, it is important to understand many of the
symbols to get a better understanding of the characters and theme. Wicked follows Elphaba's life
while she undergoes prejudices of others along with dilemmas with being different. As Maguire
builds the storyline he utilizes symbols to convey a more in depth perspective of the novel. To
begin, the first symbol that could represent Elphaba and her fear is water. Water is used in the book

The Wizard has modern ideals for Oz and has harsh views towards anything seen as more traditional
or "royalist," such as one of the several religions in Oz, Lurlinism, as stated in the quote, "...public
Lurlinism – even as a joke – bordered on being intolerably retrograde, even royalist. And that did
not do in the Wizard's reign." He rules over Oz as a dictator, and is not open to opposition from
citizens; his word is final even when there is logic against him, according to the quote, "'I don't
believe, Elphie, that the Wizard is open to entertaining arguments, even by as august an Animal as
Doctor Dillamond.'" The Wizard causes the oppression of Oz, therefore creating the Marxist
environment of Wicked. To carry out his law and maintain power of the citizens of Oz, the Wizard
has to have some kind of police force, and in Wicked, this group takes the shape of the Gale Forcers.
Gale Forcers are just another branch of the oppressive leadership of Oz since they are who carry out
the law of the Wizard. Describing the Gale Forcers, Elphaba says, "'They march in those boots all
over the poor and the weak. They terrify houeholds at three in the morning and drag away
dissenters...It's government by terror.'" They are the more active part of the Wizard's tyranny as they
actually carry out the punishments and segregations of the Wizard's law, in contrast to the

Comparing Music Of The Night 'And Defying Gravity'
This essay is a comparison of two chosen songs one being from Sir Andrew Lloyd– Webber's
"Music of the Night from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera" and the other being "Defying
Gravity" from Stephen Schwartz's musical "Wicked". These play rights are unique in that they
portray different stories to their audiences musically as each song carries its own emotion and the
music and lyrics enhances its portrayal.
Webber Shows the Phantom's (Erik's) gullible side in the song " Music of the Night" as he portrays
his undying love for Christine and shows his eagerness to full fill all her dreams of being successful.
Webber captures this side of Erik through the use of music and song lyrics throughout this song as
he is expressing his feelings for her in hopes that this will provoke an emotional response in her and
make her stay with him. This can be seen on the lyrics: " Night– time sharpens, heightens each
sensation, Darkness stirs and wakes imagination, Silently the senses abandon their defences" (0:01–
0:18) (Maren, D (2003) . Erik explains how our senses of awarness have become heightened

Wicked : The Story Of Wicked, By Gregory Maguire
Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, is a fantasy–themed story that plays out the origins of the Wicked
Witch of The West, or Elphaba, from the iconic film "The Wizard of Oz." The story begins from her
birth and ends with her unfortunate death. It is broken up into five arcs, which are five life stages
Elphaba experiences. The majority of the book is told by important characters that she meets, such
as Glinda, Boq, and Fiyero, so rather than learning firsthand what's going on in her mind, the reader
sees what is going on given what information these characters reveal about her. It isn't until much
later that we're able to see Elphaba's perspective and what's going through her head. Wicked tells the
broken, unlucky tale of Elphaba and her struggles, and how she came to be known as one of the
most recognized villains of today.
With more than 3 million copies in print (via the book cover itself), Wicked has struck the hearts of
many people, so that alone can say a lot about whether or not this should be on your shelf. Not only
are there millions of copies of the book in existence, there is also a broadway show based off the
book, which has been running since 2003 with around over 5000+ performances (stated by

light hearted, happy movie it's based off of. It's overarching theme is Good vs. Evil, but not in the

character is, of course, the Wicked Witch, Elphaba. She is born green, with really sharp teeth, and
afraid of water. When she gets near water, she just gets really scared, and when she cries or a couple

Wizard of Oz vs. Wicked
The Wizard of Oz and Wicked are two famous books that were turned into movies and plays. At

Symbolism In Wicked By Gregory Maguire

Elphaba is afraid of water and she is also circumspect towards it because when she touches it, her
skin will get burned. She will always try to hide herself from water. "She had to tuck herself
between some exposed roots of the black willow tree, where no water could endanger her, and wait
for the storm to pass." Also, "Elphaba would never drown, never, because she would not go near the
lake" (Maguire 33). According to Griffith, "A symbol is something that represents something else",
"A symbol is an object that has meaning beyond itself." (76 Griffith) Even though she cannot touch
water, she is fascinated by it. The idea of fearing water and fascinated by water is quite opposite
idea, ye Maguire deploys this. In the story, Elphaba is described as staring at water glasses, yet
shying away when they are brought too close. Elphaba is always aware of water. Examples include
Elphaba "shucking her cloak and folding it inside out so that the wet wool never touched her. On the
occasion when another cafe patron would come through, shaking water off an umbrella, Elphaba
always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even a scattering of drops."(Maguire 113) Moreover,
whenever something terrible is approaching, water is nearby most of the time. This reveals how
water is a phenomenal symbol of fear, but on other hand Elphaba was attracted to it. From this
point, we can also understand that water is a private symbol. According to Writing Essays about
Literature, "Private symbols are unique to an individual or to a single work. Only from clues in the
work itself can we learn the symbolic value of the object." The clues in the novel are given that
water is a symbol of fear. In contrast, we can also see that there is an obvious symbol in the book
Christine that acts an important role to project the main theme of the book. Christine is a vehicle,
however she also symbolizes female in the book. The same as water in

Wicked Elphaba Born Green Quotes
From the time a child is born they are labeled, sectioned off,put in a specific group. Whether it be
upper class, middle class and lower class or Mexican, African American or Caucasian. For a while
that is all this child is thought of as which they had no control over. Later in life this child will enter
high school where kids judge and make assumptions merely based on what he or she looks like.
Then this child will become a young adult and have to apply for college where they might not get

judged and categorized by people every single day. In the book Wicked: The Life and Times of the

Glinda is presented as feminine and well groomed. She wears extravagant dresses that are colorful

her appearance and clothing. "Galinda was glad for the natural advantages of her flaxen hair, and
stood by a window so the light could dazzle itself off her curls" (Maguire 42). She uses beauty to
her advantage in order to attain whatever she desires. Elphaba in the other hand wears darker and
plain clothing. Her clothes are simple and do not attract any attention. "Munchkinlander girls had a

Elphaba is able to convince Glinda, before known as Galinda to think rather than use her beauty to

I know Elphaba has some good intentions but she should not have just ran off like that after I let her
in on all of this. I let her in on the spells and the magic flying monkeys that we use as surveillance. I
mean, with the Emerald City being this big, and everything that is going on right now, we do need
that extra surveillance to make sure nothing illegal is happening. And then she says that "I have no
power"?! Excuse me, no, I have ALL the power

Elphaba Thropp In The Wizard Of Oz
Halloween is a night for evil things to come out and play. But decided what would be deemed evil?
Who made it normal for people to take one look at a child with green skin and say "you must be an
evil witch"? How is that person supposed to know if the green skinned child is evil, or even a witch
for that matter? Maybe this child is more interested in studying life sciences. This green skinned
child has a life, and emotions, and because of the person or people who deemed her evil she is to
grow accustomed to discrimination. This child is named Elphaba Thropp, she is most popular for
her appearance in the classic children's tale The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank. Baum. For Baum, the
concept of good and bad it is very black and white, Oz is good and ... Show more content on

Tibbett tells this slightly vulgar story, calling it an "origin myth that predates the Oziad" (Maguire
147) which emphasizes the thought that it is like earth's Greek mythology, as it came before the
Oziad. The Oziad is the Oz version of the Bible, and Frexspar Thropp is the Oz version of a priest.
Frex is a unionist who worships the Unnamed God. In the very beginning of the book Frex talks
about how there will be a crisis in society revolving around a Time Dragon Clock and eventually
prophecies that a devil will come to Oz on the day that his wife's child is born. This child is
ironically Elphaba, also known as the Wicked Witch of the West and the protagonist of the novel.
Frex's hamartia is

  • 1. Major Works Data Sheet For Wicked By Gregory Maguire Name: Emily Quach Major Works Data Sheet This form must be typed. Title of the Work: Wicked: The Life and Times of The Wicked Witch of The West Author: Gregory Maguire Date of Publication: 1995 (2007) Genre: Novel Historical information about the Setting: This novel is a fictional novel so there's no exact historical setting but there is some similarities in the story to our history. Dabbling in the "pleasure faith", persecuting people were some of the things that happened in Munchkinland and that resembles what was happening in Europe and roughly, America from the 1500s to the 1700s. Those were the years of the Protestant Reformation which was an uncontrollable religious frenzy led to wars and persecution. The author described Emerald City as a place of political oppression, corruption, danger, etc. Plot summary: Frex who is a minister who has a sermon to give today and Melena who is a housewife, is pregnant with Elphaba who turns out to be born green. They hide out in a house in the woods. Turtle Heart who is a Quadling that is having an affair with Melina, makes a magic mirror for Elphaba. A character named Galinda goes to Shiz University and ends up having Elphaba as her roommate. There is a tea party/ poetry slam that Madam Morrible is hosting and Boq who was Elphaba's childhood friend, goes up to her to introduce himself but she acts rudely to him and then leaves. Mr. Dillamond is a goat that is a professor at the college for girls so this implies that he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Liir And Elphaba In The Murder And Its Aftermath In the chapter, "The Murder and Its Aftermath," Liir asks his mother what does she want, while the others like "the Lion wants courage, the Tin Man a heart, and the Scarecrow brains. Dorothy wants to go home" (Maguire 231). Her response is to have "a soul", while Liir wants a father. In this chapter, it is the first time Liir and Elphaba have a heart to heart conversation. It seems Liir always wanted a father figure in his life, as Elphaba did not play a motherly role in his life. His question to his mother catches her off guard and leaves her staying up all night thinking what she said to Liir. All night, she keeps referring back to the idea of religion, the Unnamed God. Later, she thinks about Fiyero and how he might be in disguise and wants ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For some time now I have been very interested in the musical Wicked, even though I have yet to watch the entire musical. Ever since I heard Idina Menzel sing defying gravity live I have been emotionally connected to Wicked for some strange reason, and I have taken the time to listen to every song from the musical. I realize that it will be hard to learn and become my character without actually seeing the musical so I will be taking the time to watch it before the performance. As we were doing strike for legally blonde, I was playing the musical channel on Pandora and the song The Wizard and I started playing, and I immediately knew that was the song for me. I could really see the scene unfold as I was listening to the song, and I felt the emotion as she sang. It did not take long for me to come up with blocking for the scene seeing as not very much I needed. I felt the natural movement of the scene just by listening to it. • 4. Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis We all have felt the pain of a broken a heart and it's fair to say it is the most wicked thing to exist. A broken heart has the power to change one's life completely whether it be for the good, for the bad, or a just a new road. In the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire a change in the main character's heart turned into the death of a loved one and disarrangement of her entire life. But to get into this you need to know the beginning. Elphaba was born in Munchkinland, her dad a preacher of sorts and her mom the granddaughter of the ruler of Munchkinland. Elphaba was born with green skin which caused her to be discriminated against from a young age even by her own parents. Later on she went to college and there she met what would be her best friends ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Similarities Between Wizard Of Oz And Wicked Wizard of Oz and Wicked. Two very different stories both sharing the same characters and setting. The two plots are so masterfully intertwined, but showing two very different points of view. Although they share so many similarities, relationships and conflicts between the two are very different. Glinda maybe isn't so good after all, Elphaba was just trying to do what was right, and the Wizard was the real villain all along. To truly see things as they really are, both sides of a story must be acknowledged and understood, or else someone else's story will be lost. The Wizard of Oz is a classic known by all. The plot is fairly simple. Poor bored Dorothy is sick of her normal boring life on her Aunt and Uncles farm in Kansas and decides to run away to a more exciting life. Her plans are changed when she meets a fortune teller who convinces her to go back home. Unfortunately, as she is headed back home a horrible storm starts and she and her dog Toto are blown away, along with her house. When she lands, she comes outside to see that she has landed on a person with red shoes. She is met by tiny people and a witch called Glinda who tells her that she has landed on and killed the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy tells Glinda she wants to go home, and Glinda tells her if she follows the yellow brick road she will end up in the Emerald City where the Wonderful Wizard of Oz can help get her home. • 6. Wicked By Gregory Maguire: Novel Analysis It's Not Easy Being Green The Wizard of Oz is one of the world's most well known and cherished stories. It shows how the heroic Dorothy fights against the Wicked Witch of the West, making it one of the most popular good versus evil tales. The novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire, tells the unknown story of the Wicked Witch of the West named Elphaba. Following her childhood, the story recounts Elphaba's struggles growing up because she is green. Maguire implants many issues from real life like skin color, religion, and discrimination into the recognizable world of Oz. In Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked, Maguire uses Elphaba's skin color to show how society's favorability of white over other skin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Elphaba experiences prejudice from the society around her, her parents have shamed her since birth. Once she was born, her parents worked to get rid of her green skin. They thought it was like a disease that needs to be cured, and they try different treatments. The Nanny remarks that, "'peasant treatments don't work... and spiritual intercession has failed. Do you have the courage to think about sorcery? Is there someone local who could magic the green venom out of the child?'" (Maguire 32). Like the parents, the Nanny also believes that Elphaba's green skin is a curse. Although Elphaba is human in every other way, her green skin takes away her humanity. The Nanny thinks to herself that "the skin was green as sin. Not an ugly color. Just not a human color" (Maguire 27). Her family can not accept Elphaba because of her skin color; they barely see her as human. Their lack of support and understanding hurts Elphaba by making her lose self–confidence and support that she needs to live in a prejudiced world outside her home. Instead, the discrimination extends to her own parents and Nanny who just mirror the cruel world Elphaba lives in. Additionally, the Nanny reveals that since "[Elphaba had] been born an unfortunate color. [A gypsy women] gave me some powerful pills. I've always wondered if the pills were the cause of Nessarose's affliction" (Maguire 300). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It provides issues that are relevant to today's society and it can help one be aware of some tricky situations that they may encounter throughout an individual's life. The characters in the play may not go about the matters exceedingly well, but that does not mean that someone cannot learn from the mistakes of how the situations were handled. The struggles that were faced entailed that relationships are far better than being popular, everyone makes mistakes but not everyone takes responsibility for their mistakes, and one is bound to be used or manipulated at least once in their life time. They trick them into thinking that they are trying to better themselves or help them progress with something and then all the sudden they turn on them because they want what they desire instead. Elphaba wanted to be with the Wizard because she desired to help the animals of Oz and she thought that once someone was with the Wizard everyone will perceive them differently; they will not think they are weird or strange. People do not always do things for the right reasons, "You can't! Spells are irreversible! I knew she had the power, I told you!" (Holzman 1.15) Once Elphaba figured out that Madame Morrible and the Wizard were using her for their devious plan, she felt hurt because she was manipulated by the people she thought she could trust. • 8. Wicked By Gregory Maguire Character Traits Frex's character, in Gregory Maguire's book, Wicked is described as a charlatan. Maguire creates a complex character in Frex, who is a minister that misleads people by getting them to believe in something that is untrue. He also uses connotation for setting stronger words that impact his descriptions towards Frex. Maguire also creates a complex character for Elphaba, who is described as peculiar, or strange and doesn't seem at all like a normal person. Many things make Frex a charlatan. For instance, his own wife Melina says to their daughter on page 32 : "Your father is a charlatan." A charlatan is someone who is dishonest or a fraud. Instead of saying: "Your father is a fraud," Maguire chooses the word charlatan because although both words mean are similar, "charlatan" is stronger and has a more negative impact towards Frex. Another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, on pages 19–20 it says: "... the infant glistened a scandalous shade of green emerald...an undeniable green cast to the skin." Most babies aren't born green, and even more shocking, Elphaba bites off the fishwife's finger with her unbelievably sharp teeth. On page 20 it states : "The child bit the finger off at the second knuckle." This is also unusual because most babies don't have teeth, especially razor sharp ones. Even later in the book, it states that as a child, Elphaba bit everything she saw. Another strange thing about Elphaba was that she seemed to avoid water at all costs. On page 113 it states: "Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even the scattering of drops." Also, on page 185, Fiero asks if there was something to drink and Elphaba responds: "I don't have running water. I don't use it." This shows that Elphaba is peculiar because normal people need water to live and use it in their everyday lives to drink, cook, and and bathe. During our 15 minute intermission I was able to answer my mother's questions and pinpoint her confusion. No, Dorothy and Toto are not the stars of this play and the munchkins will not be singing about a yellow brick road. How many other audience members were expecting a take on the Wizard of Oz? Emerald City (home to the Wizard) is awash in green light and the cast is dressed in all green costumes for unity. To amplify the illusion of Glinda's goodness she floats around in a bubble and is dressed in soft pastels in comparison to Elphaba's black frock. The main theme for props throughout were the vintage industrial gears and clock references. The music is the real show stealer of Wicked. Most of the best songs are in the first half when the characters belt out amusing songs like "Popular" and "What is this feeling". With the help of the chorus, Elpheba is literally raised up to the rafters of the stage while singing the best song of the play "Defying gravity". While there were good moments in the second half and the two actresses singing in unison in parts and complimenting each other through other songs, post–intermission was tamer musically. Through the music and scenery of Wicked the audience is exposed to a few elements of "The Wizard of Oz". They show how the scarecrow, lion and tinman came to be and Glinda crosses Dorothy's path a couple of times. These moments are subtle, adding an ironic and quirky touch to the play. In the book "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," written by Gregory Maguire, there is a main idea expressed throughout. The idea is racism and its effects on others. Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, experiences racism with open, prejudiced views on her green skin and her overall appearance. Another form of the idea of racism is expressed through the Bann of Animal Rights and Mobility throughout the book. An Animal is just like a human, but their physical anatomy is that of an animal. Glinda's friends weren't very kind, although Glinda wasn't either at that time. She disliked Elphaba, but for what reason? Elphaba had never insulted Glinda; she had always been kind and polite to the bratty Gilikun girl, who had gone by Galinda at the time. But why, then would she mistreat her? Without even using words, Glinda expressed her hatred for Elphaba based on her skin, how humbly she dressed, and her bony figure. She made fun of her behind her back, and always discussed it with a smirk on her face to her fellow bratty friends. The worst prank was pulled on Elphaba by one of these girls, Pfannee. "'I believe I have been set up to be mortified,' said Galinda, glaring at the helpless Pfannee. 'I am being humiliated for sport. This is not funny, Miss Pfannee! I have a mind to–to kick you!'" (Maguire 122) Here, Galinda is shocked by the letter Pfannee had written to Elphaba to get her to come up to the lake house they were at. "'Were you born to plague me?' Galinda said tearfully to her roomie. 'Did I ask for your association?'" (Maguire 122) Galinda seems to feel insulted by Pfannee that she'd do something so horrible. That she'd even try to invite the thing, as they see Elphaba as. "'Oh, dear no, I did not,' said Galinda, IN her anger, she was beginning to regain some control, even though, Boq guessed, damage had been done for good. 'My darling Miss Elphaba, I wouldn't have dreamed of exposing you to such thoughtless cruelties as these girls perpetuate on each other and on me for sheer amusement. Besides, you have no place in a setting like this.'" (Maguire 122) After Elphaba finally asked if Galinda wrote it to her, having guessed the answer already, this was Galinda's fit about it. Wicked By Gregory Maguire Analysis The author of Wicked,Gregory Maguire wrote his story to be engaging in many levels.Firstly, he uses expanded detail that engages readers who love background. Similarly, his writing is high quality and contains many similes, metaphors and personification. His characters are also very consistent in their beliefs. One of the musicals that correspond to an unadulterated musical is The Wicked. The wicked is based on a book by Winnie Holzman with the Music and Lyrics written by Stephen Schwartz. The musical focuses on the basis of an unlikely friendship and who struggle with opposing viewpoints, personalities and rivalry. Instead of seeing the story through Dorothy's perspective, it is seen through Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West's eyes. When reading a narrative, it is important to understand many of the symbols to get a better understanding of the characters and theme. Wicked follows Elphaba's life while she undergoes prejudices of others along with dilemmas with being different. As Maguire builds the storyline he utilizes symbols to convey a more in depth perspective of the novel. To begin, the first symbol that could represent Elphaba and her fear is water. Wicked Marxist Analysis Marxist Lens in Wicked Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is a fictional representation of many problems faced by the world in the past and present. It follows the life of Elphaba, who later becomes the "Wicked Witch of the West", a result from her life experiences as a rebel against the Wizard of Oz, her unfortunate appearance of green skin, and several other trials she's faced. Maguire was born in Albany, New York and lost his mother in childbirth. His father was a writer, but was very ill at the time of Maguire's birth, so he and his three older siblings had to stay with family and Maguire even spent time in an orphanage before moving back with his father and his new wife. The Wizard has modern ideals for Oz and has harsh views towards anything seen as more traditional or "royalist," such as one of the several religions in Oz, Lurlinism, as stated in the quote, "...public Lurlinism – even as a joke – bordered on being intolerably retrograde, even royalist. And that did not do in the Wizard's reign." He rules over Oz as a dictator, and is not open to opposition from citizens; his word is final even when there is logic against him, according to the quote, "'I don't believe, Elphie, that the Wizard is open to entertaining arguments, even by as august an Animal as Doctor Dillamond.'" The Wizard causes the oppression of Oz, therefore creating the Marxist environment of Wicked. To carry out his law and maintain power of the citizens of Oz, the Wizard has to have some kind of police force, and in Wicked, this group takes the shape of the Gale Forcers. Gale Forcers are just another branch of the oppressive leadership of Oz since they are who carry out the law of the Wizard. Describing the Gale Forcers, Elphaba says, "'They march in those boots all over the poor and the weak. They terrify houeholds at three in the morning and drag away dissenters...It's government by terror.'" They are the more active part of the Wizard's tyranny as they actually carry out the punishments and segregations of the Wizard's law, in contrast to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Comparing Music Of The Night 'And Defying Gravity' This essay is a comparison of two chosen songs one being from Sir Andrew Lloyd– Webber's "Music of the Night from the musical "The Phantom of the Opera" and the other being "Defying Gravity" from Stephen Schwartz's musical "Wicked". These play rights are unique in that they portray different stories to their audiences musically as each song carries its own emotion and the music and lyrics enhances its portrayal. Webber Shows the Phantom's (Erik's) gullible side in the song " Music of the Night" as he portrays his undying love for Christine and shows his eagerness to full fill all her dreams of being successful. Webber captures this side of Erik through the use of music and song lyrics throughout this song as he is expressing his feelings for her in hopes that this will provoke an emotional response in her and make her stay with him. This can be seen on the lyrics: " Night– time sharpens, heightens each sensation, Darkness stirs and wakes imagination, Silently the senses abandon their defences" (0:01– 0:18) (Maren, D (2003) . Erik explains how our senses of awarness have become heightened because as humans rely on them as they act as our defences from the outside world so that we can forsee threats and in moments of darkness this ... Through lots of brainstorming I came up with the idea of having half of my mask be Glinda the Good Witch, from Wicked and Wizard of Oz, and the other half be Elphaba, or the Wicked Witch of the West, from the same shows. My first reason for choosing this design was the fact that it reveals my love for the theatre, and musicals particularly. That was something about myself that I felt I could reveal pretty easily through this design. When I told my friend the idea she said jovially, "Oh so what you're revealing about yourself is that you're a theatre nerd." While those weren't my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Wicked : The Story Of Wicked, By Gregory Maguire Wicked, by Gregory Maguire, is a fantasy–themed story that plays out the origins of the Wicked Witch of The West, or Elphaba, from the iconic film "The Wizard of Oz." The story begins from her birth and ends with her unfortunate death. It is broken up into five arcs, which are five life stages Elphaba experiences. The majority of the book is told by important characters that she meets, such as Glinda, Boq, and Fiyero, so rather than learning firsthand what's going on in her mind, the reader sees what is going on given what information these characters reveal about her. It isn't until much later that we're able to see Elphaba's perspective and what's going through her head. Wicked tells the broken, unlucky tale of Elphaba and her struggles, and how she came to be known as one of the most recognized villains of today. With more than 3 million copies in print (via the book cover itself), Wicked has struck the hearts of many people, so that alone can say a lot about whether or not this should be on your shelf. Not only are there millions of copies of the book in existence, there is also a broadway show based off the book, which has been running since 2003 with around over 5000+ performances (stated by ibdb.com, an internet broadway database). The book itself is a dark, twisted tale in contrast to the light hearted, happy movie it's based off of. She will always try to hide herself from water. "She had to tuck herself between some exposed roots of the black willow tree, where no water could endanger her, and wait for the storm to pass." Also, "Elphaba would never drown, never, because she would not go near the lake" (Maguire 33). According to Griffith, "A symbol is something that represents something else", "A symbol is an object that has meaning beyond itself." (76 Griffith) Even though she cannot touch water, she is fascinated by it. The idea of fearing water and fascinated by water is quite opposite idea, ye Maguire deploys this. In the story, Elphaba is described as staring at water glasses, yet shying away when they are brought too close. Elphaba is always aware of water. Examples include Elphaba "shucking her cloak and folding it inside out so that the wet wool never touched her. On the occasion when another cafe patron would come through, shaking water off an umbrella, Elphaba always recoiled, flinching if she was caught by even a scattering of drops."(Maguire 113) Moreover, whenever something terrible is approaching, water is nearby most of the time. This reveals how water is a phenomenal symbol of fear, but on other hand Elphaba was attracted to it. From this point, we can also understand that water is a private symbol. According to Writing Essays about Literature, "Private symbols are unique to an individual or to a single work. Only from clues in the work itself can we learn the symbolic value of the object." The clues in the novel are given that water is a symbol of fear. In contrast, we can also see that there is an obvious symbol in the book Christine that acts an important role to project the main theme of the book. Christine is a vehicle, however she also symbolizes female in the book. The same as water in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
