Greece, throwing an apple at somebody
was a declaration of love. No wonder they

Explore - Philosophy:
The art of thinking
It was the first time in human western history
where we gave more importance to
reasonable thinking to solve our problems
rather than fighting each other in wars.
You can explore the main ideas and thoughts
of the more relevant greek philosophers in

Interesting fact #2: Pythagoras,
one of the most important greek
philosophers and mathematicians,
claimed that women were equal to men
and allowed females to attend his school.
This was a very revolutionary idea at the
time, where women were unfortunately
banned from almost every activity
regarding important decision making.
Of the many legacies of the Greeks, one of
the most important was philosophy, the love
for knowledge.

Explain - Birth Of
Democracy
Greeks also created law trials, where up to
500 juries were responsible for determining if
a person had committed a crime or not. This
was much more fair than in previous times,
when only a king or queen could decide the
fate of someone accused of doing something
wrong.
Interesting fact #3: Meetings of
the assembly in Athens, to discuss and
approve laws, could attract large
audiences of up to 6,000 citizens!
Critical thinking led to the creation of
democracy, a form of government we still use
nowadays and that has proven to be the
most effective and fair, giving every citizen a
voice to express their concerns and opinions
and to have a vote when it comes to decide
what should be done or to elect those who
will be in charge of deciding the best
solutions to our everyday problems.
Greek Democracy
Greek democracy was not perfect, of course.
Only grown up men were allowed to
participate in the assemblies. Women were
banned as well as slaves, which counted for
30-40% of Greece's population at the time.

elections worked in ancient Athens here:

Democracy, as it happens with any
government system, has its good things and
its flaws.
Think about what you have learnt so far
about the ancient Greeks and compare it to
the way we perform democracy nowadays.
Make a list of three of the “not so good
things” of the Greeks’ democracy and how
you would make them better.

Interesting fact #5: Some people in
Ancient Greece would not eat beans, as
they believed that they contained the
souls of the dead!
The teacher has decided to let the students
create one rule for the classroom that
everyone must follow. What would be the
rule you would propose? What would be its
benefits? Would you consider a punishment
for not following the rule?

Reflect - Discussing and
voting
In groups of 3-4, share each other’s rules
from the previous exercise and vote for the
best one.
Was it easy to reach an agreement on which
proposal was the winning one?
Interesting fact #6: Birthday
candles began in ancient Greece when
people brought cakes adorned with lit
candles to the temple of Artemis,
goddess of the hunt.
If you could not reach an agreement,
what would you do to determine which
proposal wins?
Do you think the possible punishment is
right or maybe too soft or too harsh?

Interesting fact #7: The Greeks
used to go to the gym naked! I wonder if
they did it also during winter...
The ancient Greeks used their brains to the
fullest. And that includes a broad imagination
to create tales and myths.
They were polytheists, which means they
believed in many gods.

invented the Yo-Yo and the alarm clock.
Kudos for the first one!...not so much for
the other…
Guess what? Greeks minds to the rescue
again. Another of their great contributions to
humankind was the development of science,
especially mathematics and geometry.
