Ancient Greek Essay
The ancient Greeks were truly an amazing group of people. They were able to create things during their time that are still present and functioning today.
Whether they were thinking, competing, or building they easily incorporated their culture into it. The Greeks changed the way that the western world
thought and kept changing ideas and thought processes. They created the first schools and even wrote the some of the material that are being taught to
students today. They created a political system that gave a voice to all of Greece's citizens and brought people and ideas together. Without these
pioneers of philosophy and democracy, there would be huge gaps in politics, education, and art that would still be present in 2018. The Greeks were
people of many questions and they expressed their curiosity in the form of philosophy or the love of wisdom. Throughout Greek history there have
been many important and influential thinkers. People like Thales or Miletus, Pythagoras, and Protagoras lead the Greeks to higher thinking. While
Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle went on to ask more questions and create new opportunities for those who...show more content...
A man named Homer wrote two of the most famous epics of early Greece: the Iliad and the odyssey. The Iliad, is the story of the Trojan war and
the Odyssey is the story of Odysseus' epic journey and return home to his wife. Both of these works were regarded as accurate historical records and
were used in education. Many of the literary works from this time are still being used in school systems today. Both of Homer's epics are being taught
in high schools as well as colleges in the United States. Literature didn't just tell history though it allowed people to express their thoughts and feelings
in a way that they could have kept private rather than exploit to the public like if they had written a Tragedy. Greek literature went hand–in hand with

Ancient Greek History
Why should one study the Ancient Greeks? There exist almost countless contributions that Greek culture has made to western society in the areas of
art, literature, philosophy, drama, architecture and politics. Lasting visions of thought and inspiring intellect helped shaped today's western culture
with notions of democracy and personal freedoms. Greek scientists made revolutionary discoveries in medicine, mathematics, physics, and astronomy.
It was the Greeks who, through philosophy, instilled thoughtful exploration of the mind and consciousness. The beauty of their artwork and the
precision of their statues reflected human development and expression of individuality. The most important reason to study the...show more content...
Greek settlements transformed themselves into city–states, or poleis. Regions ruled by a council and a king. Their political structure was unstable
because the kings often acted like tyrants to the citizens. The Aristocratic people, mostly landowners, served on the council. Many citizens were not
fairly represented in this system. This caused tension, and in many cases political uprisings (Archibald p19). It is ironic that the Greek culture is
given so much credit for ideas of democracy, because times of democracy seldom existed in Ancient Greece; only for short whiles between unstable
governments. The Olympic Games, a great athletic contest, began in 776 BC. The Olympics marked a rise of the Greek culture, and the beginning of
the Archaic Period of Greece. During this time period, foreign culture held a great influence over Greek ideas. Artwork began to focus on human
figures and of mythology. The culture soared even higher into the Classical Period, approximately 500 BC. This was the highest point of Greek
creativity especially in the areas of philosophy, art, and literature. The Persian Wars began in 490 BC, with a Persian invasion in Greece led by
Darius the Great of Thrace. The Greek forces were superior and crushed the invasion at Marathon, under Miltiades. In 480 BC, the Persians launched
a second attack led by Xerxes and sacked and ruined Athens. The Greeks later won a decisive military victory at Salamis, they

Ancient Greek Influences Essay
Historians have long considered Ancient Greece to be one of the most influential societies on modern day life. Ancient Greece has inspired the modern
world in five main areas: theatre, government, philosophy, art, and architecture.
Theatre flourished in Greece, particularly in Athens, between c. 550 BC and c. 220 BC. During its beginnings theatrical performances were part of
Dionysia, a festival held in honour of the god Dionysus. The plot of the plays was always inspired by Greek mythology, a theme that is still common
today. Many modern plays and movies have been directly based on or incorporated elements of Greek mythology or simply mythology in general.
Every play had a chorus, though the size and importance of it varied. The...show more content...
Love also became a principle element of Greek theatre during this time. Greek comedy inspired much of modern romantic, generational, and situational
comedy. Satyr plays blended elements of tragedy and comedy, and featured mock drunkenness, sexual props and costumes, as well as pranks and
gags. Influence of the satyr plays can be seen in genre of burlesque, which involved elaborate, risquГ© parodies of well–known operas, plays, and
ballets. Modern comedies, which typically involve practical jokes, sexual humour, and drunkenness, are inspired by satyr plays as well.
Ancient Greece was one of the first democratic societies and has greatly influenced modern day governments. Although the Greek idea of democracy is
different from what is practiced today, their ideas formed the basis for modern democratic governments. Prior the invention of democracy, citizens had
no rights and there were no guidelines for who was considered a citizen. Democracy gave voting rights and the ability to hold office to citizens – free
men born in Greece, usually landowners. Today's modern democracy is accessible to all people and has a higher degree of organization and
hierarchy, it still derives its basic prinicples from Greek democracy.
The origins are Western philosophy and sciences are found in Ancient Greece, beginning with the pre–Socratic philosophers. These philosophers began
to examine the world in a way that no one else had before; they wanted to

Ancient Greek Art
Ancient Greek Art
Ancient Greece was a remarkable place of learning and civilization. Many of the institutions developed at the time are still in use today, such as
universities and democratic governments. Ancient Greece is also known for its incredible artworks, which have influenced many cultures through
centuries. As with all things, the Ancient Greeks were innovators in the field of art and developed many new styles and techniques which have been
used by countless artists ever since. Ancient Greek art is separated into three periods known as Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. These three periods
show the styles used in Ancient Greece and how they were developed and changed through the years, starting with more basic techniques in the...show

It was a time of great change in the art of Ancient Greece. Artists stopped creating the still of forms of the Kouros figures and began to create
sculptures that showed movement; usually an athlete performing some feat. The controposto pose was created this period. A controposto pose is a
pose in which the weight of a sculpture is placed on one side of the body; it gave a sculpture a much more natural stance. One of the most famous
sculptures from this period was Discobolus or the Discus Thrower. This sculpture was created by the famous sculptor Myron ca. 450 BC.
Discobolus is a sculpture of a man in the middle of throwing a discus, as the name suggests. This figure is a great example of the new style of
sculpture being made during the classical period. The figure is in an extremely dramatic pose, with all of his weight on his right leg as he
prepares to throw the discus. It has been a matter of some debate whether or not this pose is actually humanly possible or if the artists merely
exaggerated for the purpose creating a dramatic sculpture. Myron was responsible for many of the great sculptures of the Classical period, though
none of them are known to have survived; all of our knowledge of his works come from accounts of Romans and other such people who had seen
them while they still existed. Not much is known of him because of this. The Classical period was a time of great change in Ancient Greek art and
was responsible for the

Ancient Greek Belief
Belief is the state of mind in which a person thinks something to be the case, with or without there being empirical evidence to prove that something is
the case with factual certainty. Another way of defining belief sees it as a mental representation of an attitude positively oriented towards the
likelihood of something being true.[1] In the context of Ancient Greek thought, two related concepts were identified with regards to the concept of
belief: pistis and doxa. Simplified, we may say that pistis refers to "trust" and "confidence", while doxa refers to "opinion" and "acceptance". The
English word "orthodoxy" derives from doxa. Jonathan Leicester suggests that belief has the purpose of guiding action rather than indicating truth.[2] In
