CLASSROOM OBSERVATION #2
WHO AMONG YOU
HERE PLAYS
BASKETBALL?
Car vs. Truck
1. Describe momentum and identify its
equation relating momentum to mass and
velocity
2. Relate impulse and momentum to collision
of objects
3. Apply the equation learned to compute for
momentum.
•OBJECTIVES:
UNLOCKING
OF
DIFFICULTIES • Velocity- is the rate of change of its position with
respect to a frame of reference
• Mass – a quantitative measure of inertia, a
fundamental property of all matter.
• Vector quantity – is defined as the
physical quantity that has both direction as well as
magnitude.
• Force- an influence that can change the motion of
an object
• Collision- any event in which two or more bodies
exert forces on each other in relatively short time
ACTIVITIES:
Activity 1. What affects Momentum?
Activity 2. Momentum and Impulse
in Real-life situation
•2 things to consider:
Mass
Velocity
Momentum-
refers to an object
in motion that
has mass and
velocity
Momentum is equal to the product of
mass and velocity
Mathematically, it is expressed as
p=mv
Where:
p= momentum ( kg∙ m/s )
m= mass (kg)
v= velocity (m/s)
IMPULSE
- The change in
momentum
J= ∆p
Impulse is expressed as
J= F∆t
Where:
I= impulse
F= force
t=time
• Considering the car has Car A is travelling at 80 m/s
while Car B is traveling at 30 m/s. Which of the two cars
would be more difficult to stop?
80 m/s
30 m/s
FORMULA:
P=mv
• Suppose you are travelling from
Bicol to Manila, what do you
think will happen to the bus after
it passes along a curve road in
Quezon?
• After passing a curve road, the bus
travels in a straight path. How will
you describe the velocity of the
bus?
• Let’s say for instance, the bus has 20
passengers going to Naga, upon
reaching the bus stop in Tigaon, 4
passengers get off. Then when the bus
reached the Ocampo terminal, another 4
passengers get off.
• How will you describe the mass of the
bus?
CONCLUSION
When the object slows down, the velocity
decreases.
When the object moves faster, the velocity
increases.
If there a change in velocity/mass of an object,
there is also a change in momentum.
Objects change their momentum through
collisions.
Direction: Read each item carefully and choose the letter of
the correct answer.

2. The momentum for any object is
calculated by ________.
a. dividing mass by velocity.
b. multiplying mass by velocity.
c. multiplying mass by acceleration.
d. dividing force by acceleration
3. What kind of quantity is
momentum?
a. Scalar
b. Vector
c. Impulse
d. All of the above
4. A heavy object and a light object have the
same momentum. Which has the greater
speed?
a. Heavy object
b. Light object
c. Both have the same speed
d. the heavy object has a zero speed, while
the light object has a nonzero speed
5. Applying the equation learned,
answer the problem:
• A bowling ball whose mass is 4.0
kg rolls at a rate of 2.5 m/s. What
is its momentum?
EXTEND (Follow-up,
Enrichment Activity)
Answer the following questions:
• What factors may contribute to the changes
in momentum?
• What causes changes in momentum?
ASSIGNMENT
