OBJECTIVES
•Differentiate distance from displacement
•Identify the distance covered by the object
in motion
•Give the correct displacement of a moving
object
MOTION A change in position during a period
of time
Distance
If there’s a change in the position, there’s also a change in
the distance and displacement of an object.
Displacement
Total length covered by the
moving object.
It includes both the length of the
object’s path from starting to its
initial position and the direction of
the objects motion.
Distance vs Displacement
Study Figure on the left.
1. The boy rides his
bicycle from Point A to B
to C. What is the total
distance he covered?
2.What is the
displacement?
Speed, Velocity, & Acceleration
SPEED
Refers to how fast the object is moving. It tells us the
distance the object travels at a given time.
Formula
Symbols:
S = Speed
D = Distance
T = Time
Unit:
m/s
Sample 1
If the car travels 5 meters in 3 seconds, what is its
speed?
Step 4 – Write your
answer
Step 3 – Solve
Step I – write the GIVEN Step 2 – write the FORMULA
VELOCITY
Is the rate of change of the object’s position with respect to
a point of reference over time.
It is the speed and direction in motion.
Formula
Symbols:
V = Speed
D = Distance
T = Time
Unit:
m/s + Direction
Sample 1
A car runs 40 m West in 10 sec. What is he car’s
velocity?
Step 4 – Write your
answer
Step 3 – Solve
Step I – write the GIVEN Step 2 – write the FORMULA
Acceleration
Rate of change of
velocity
Formula:
Symbols:
a = Acceleration
Vi = Initial Velocity
Vf = Final Velocity
T = Time
Unit:
m/s2
Lisa lives on a hilly area in Lapu-Lapu City. When Lisa goes up the hill she
begins with a velocity of 2 m/s. However, since the hill is quite steep, her
velocity become 1 m/s after 10 seconds. What is Lisa’s acceleration?
Sample 1
Step 4 – Write your
answer
Step 3 – Solve
Step I – write the GIVEN Step 2 – write the FORMULA
TYPES OF MOTION GRAPHS
A. Fill out the table below using the graph above.
B. Plot the values in the table above as points on the graph from the table
above. Note that time is plotted on the X-axis while position is plotted on the
Y-axis.
SUMMARY • Motion is a change in position during a period of time.
• Scalar quantity have only magnitude while vectors have
magnitude and direction.
• Distance is the total length covered by the moving object
while displacement includes both the length of the object's
path from starting to its initial position and the direction of
the objects motion.
• Speed is the distance an object travels in a given of time.
Velocity is the speed in a given direction. Acceleration is a
change in velocity in a period of time.
• Constant speed refers to the speed does not change at all for
each second of the motion while instantaneous speed refers
to the speed of the object at a particular instant.
