Class 203 Essay
om Writers
The movie freedom writer will not catch your eye in the first place but once you started watching it
you will be excited what would be the ending, what will happen to the students, who are gang
members and not taking their class seriously. Every student in the class 203 has their own story that
will really make you cry if you'll understand it. Many Students inside the room 203 don't have a
sense of direction on what they really want, and they don't care about it.
Erin Gruwell started her first teaching in Woodrow Wilson high school, she teaches freshman and
sophomore class. In the first day of her teaching she was shock about the nature of class 203 which
she will handle but she has been motivated and inspired her students to learn. ... Show more content

On the parents night no parents showed up on her class till 8 then she decided to open the cabinet to
see if there is a journal inside it then she was shock, all of her students put their journal in the
cabinet. She reads all journals and she was shock about the story of each and every one of her
students. The next day, she prepares a game for her students, which they enjoy, and they become
interested by it. Erin Gruwell made her class a trip which makes them realize about life they become
inspired about every child story given to them and more inspired in the dinner because of 4 people
they met and tell their story to the students. The class was given books to read to be inspired about
they're situation connected to the story of holocaust that made them inspired and have a hope and

Stereotyping, Discrimination and Prejudice in the Media
The movie that I have chosen to watch for this particular bonus assignment is called "The Freedom
Writers". The movie is about a new teacher and the challenges that she faces in order to make the
students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate each
other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so.
Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children's attitudes and
mentalities. Racism is defined as negative behaviour on an incorrect assumption that one race is
inherently superior to others. This is one of the many forms of discrimination which is defined as
unfair actions directed against people based on their race, gender, ... Show more content on

When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out of
the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little
knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport's theory. Allport was a
psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual
prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as
knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and "tolerance" or the acceptance of differences between
people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were similar
cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate against each
other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain more knowledge
about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should change. In addition,
three other theorists' ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances Aboud, who believes
that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when they are bombarded
with negative images. In this movie, the girl Eva is a perfect example of how she changed the way
she sees people. Since she was a little girl, her father used to tell her that she had to fight for their
people as the ancestors fought against

Freedom Writers Film Analysis
The film "The Freedom Writers" was released in 2007 and was directed by Richard LaGravanese.
Richard used multiple film techniques to help the viewers understand how the characters are feeling,
their relationships with other characters and what their personality is like. These techniques include
camera shots, costume, and lighting, and they were helpful to create a theme of perseverance. In one
scene, room 203 is spending a lot of time to raise money so Miep Gies, an elderly lady who lived
through World War II and helped hide Anne Frank, can come visit them. After a dance concert and a
bake sale, both of which were very popular, they had raised enough for Gies to travel to America.
During their struggle to fundraise, Margaret the head teacher would continuously complain to the
principle that they shouldn't be able to do so, to no avail. When Miep arrives, students have created
a big, bright sign, welcoming her to their school, and they all listen with rapt attention as she tells
them her experience in the war. A tracking shot was used as Margaret marched to the principal's
office three times and the camera followed her as she moved. A tracking shot attracts the audience's
attention to what the camera is focusing on, which in this case is Margaret. A long shot being
incorporated into the tracking shot tells the audience that the setting is important as well, and the
long shot helps the viewer understand the emotion of the characters as we

Stereotyping, Prejudice And Racism In The Freedom Writers
The Freedom Writers is an emotional story about a classroom of students. These students all come
from different backgrounds; most of them are in gangs or grew up around gang violence. They fear
for their lives every single day and do not care whatsoever about getting their education in high
school. That is until one teacher, Mrs. Erin Gruwell, comes along. Mrs. Gruwell teaches them that
they are not so different at all. She treats them with respect, which is much more than any other
teacher has ever given them. She brings them together through her teaching and through literature.
In the end, the class is one big family. The story depicts stereotyping, prejudice, and racism in their
most common forms. As seen in The Freedom Writers, racism ... Show more content on

In The Freedom Writers, racism is shown through school and gangs. The students in the school are
all segregated by race. They are not forced to segregate, but they do by choice. Not only do they stay
in their respective race groups, but they also dislike the other races. They were raised to hate each
other so that is what they did. This also ties into the gang issues. The gangs are forced to segregate
and hate all of the other gangs. This does not help the country's issues with racial tension. In the
movie, Mrs. Gruwell uses the idea of gangs to tie all of her students together. Most of them were in
gangs, so they knew the struggles of loss and

Toleration And Discrimination In The Movie Freedom Writers
Have you ever been discriminated or treated differently because who you are and what your color
is? Well in the movie "Freedom Writers" the characters work on toleration and acceptance through
reading and writing. Since they are from the city of long beach of California that wasn't easy,
considering all the racial tension/conflict that goes on there. Eva is a very intolerant person in the
beginning. She didn't even want anything to do with her teacher Mrs. Gruwell because that fact that
she was white. ("that's why I hate white people on sight because they took my dad away from me for
no reason they just took him because they could") Or any other white people in general. In the
middle Eva was holding back a little. As she read and wrote more she realized she wanted to have
tolerance but she kept going by "Protect your own" so she did just that. When the whole situation
where the Cambodian got shot by someone in her car and she had to go on trial for it since she was a
main whiteness. But once she got up to the stand, when everyone's eyes were on her, and they were
blankly staring at her waiting for her to give her statement, she told the truth. "Paco did it, Paco shot
the boy". Everyone thought she was going to "protect her own" but she didn't, she exposed him and
told the truth. By the end Eva had learned tolerance though reading the Anne Frank book and
writing her diary's. She also learned sometimes by telling the truth, it has consequences too. Like for
example after she

Introduction : How 've He Do That?
Introduction: How'd He Do That? Mastering literature is an art that can only be perfected with lots
of practice and understanding memory, symbol, and pattern; this only enhances the reading and
provokes the reader to analyze the text in a more productive way. Once you become a more avid
reader you will be privileged to make comparisons, connections, and your own conclusion from the
literary work you're reading with certain aspects of many different literary works you've read along
the way. Not only does this bring depth into the work for your better understanding of the "big idea"
but also makes it a more enjoyable read. "Whenever I read a new work, I spin the mental Rolodex

This was my perspective on the book the back when I didn't know any better but as I grew as a
reader I realized that Aslan is an apt symbol of Jesus Christ himself. All the evidence pointed
towards him as a clear match. This interpretation doesn't necessarily apply to the religious kind but
it does help to have some religious literacy. Once you realize that Aslan is the abstract symbol of
Jesus Christ you can perceive him as a leader, magnificent, holy, highly admired and loved by many.
As expected, in the book Aslan is killed on the Stone Table (think back to Jesus Christ's death on the
crucifix) by the White Witch who is the epitome of evil (think back to the people who sent Jesus
Christ to his crucifixion). Utilizing memory, symbol, and pattern in this reading made the book more
enjoyable and relatable. Without a doubt I appreciated every little thing that occurred with Aslan
after this realization, in the rest of the series. Chapter 1 –– Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It's
Not) The five aspects of the Quest are: (a) a quester, (b) a place to go, (c) a stated reason to go there,
(d) challenges and trials en route, and (e) a real reason to go there. "The real reason for a quest is
always self–knowledge." (Foster pg. 3) Essentially this is a formula that many great writers utilize in

White Rose Youth Opposition
Youth opposition [pic] The German public was only familiar with the resistance group WR, before
the actual research began.[1] The late research in the resistance from the youth also arose from
mutual beliefs that the youth followed the Nazis from 1933 and that wasn't looked upon as being
likely that the youth had started opposition and resistance groups.[2] In relation to the rising interest
in resistance group among the youth, people started to examine WR's motives and goals by
analyzing the 6 leaflets, the graffiti actions in February 1943, diaries and letters. The interest kept on
increasing in West Germany as well as East. The research in WR was very heterogeneous. In BRD,

government had predicted, but I will in this case only be elaborating on the three people that were
main characters in the movie "Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage"; Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl and
Christoph Probst. [pic] Hans Fritz Scholl was born in 1918 in Württemberg and was out of a
middle–class family. The father, Robert Scholl was major in a small city[7]. The Scholl family
moved to Ulm in 1930 was the family stayed until and after Sophie and Hans' death. The father was
a liberal republican, which look upon the German conservative as being their enemies. The mother,
Magdalene was also a protestant like her husband and Sophie and Hans were also raised in that
belief throughout their lives. The information about Hans and Sophie's life are unfortunately limited
up until 1933, although there is certainty that Hans was a member of a Protestant youth organization
prior to year 1933. According to Inge Aicher Scholl's book, the Scholl children went into HJ with
their hearts and souls. They felt the fellowship, the common community, the mutual love for their
mother country, but most importantly, they felt their

Argumentative Essay On School Shootings
"School shooting is a form of mass shooting involving a gun attack on an educational institution,
such as a school or university." The U.S. secret service defines them as shootings where schools are
deliberately selected as the location for the attack. These shootings have sparked a political debate
over gun violence, zero tolerance policies and gun control.1 School shootings occur when a student
or staff member have mental illnesses or personal problems in their life. Shootings have happened
all over the world. The earliest school shooting in the United States was on July 26, 1764 where four

Every movie has a message that it is trying to convey. Whether it be a horror movie trying to show
you how deranged people can be. Action movies that show what a hero had to go through to finally
be deamed of the title. Documentaries, that want to teach about history and past event and how that
we can learn from them and not make the same mistakes. With these lessons that we learn, we have
to take the initiative to apply this to our day to day life. The world is like our "classroom," the

Examples Of Tolerance In Freedom Writers
Tolerance in Freedom Writers
In the movie "freedom writers" kids learn to be tolerant and respect others for their color and race. It
shows how these kids from the streets improve and change their perspective on color. The help from
their teacher Ms. Gruwell really inspired and changed them. In their minds everything is about color.
Slowly throughout the movie they change and accept others. In the beginning of the movie Erin
Gruwell the new teacher is joyful and tolerant of everyone. Her husband and she are happy and he
supports her teaching her new class. On the other hand, Eva, a girl who at first had no tolerance for
others and based everything off color had a father who was in jail and lived just with her mother.
Her whole life was dedicated to the gang life that was basically her family. She's not excited about
school and could really care less. In the middle of them movie Erin's husband starts to get annoyed
and insults those kids who are learning tolerance. The kids are doing fine and are really changing
already. Ms. Gruwell has come home late from school and her husband is blaming it on the kids
which leads to his annoyance. In Eva's life she is struggling because she is changing and doesn't
know if she should lie to protect her boyfriend or let the guy falsely accused free. She has so much
guilt because she knows the right thing to do, but since it's her boyfriend and shell get punished by
her gang she's having a hard time. Erin's family is also struggling

Freedom Writers Analysis
The Freedom Writers Diaries is a true story that is definitely based on today's reality. It was
watchable the first time I saw the movie and an enjoyable read the first time I had to read the book.
In the film, Gruwell (or Miss G as the kids call her) offers hope to a bunch of teenagers by giving
them diaries to write in and getting them to read books like "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The
Color Purple". These diaries are what later get compiled into the book. The diaries are a collection
of excerpts from the students' journals about their personal experiences with gang violence,
domestic violence, substance abuse, the legal system, home and school lives. Some of these were
used as voice–overs during the movie that later becomes 'The Freedom Writer's Diary". The entries
read in the movie were taken exactly from the book. The movie seems to only follow a few different
character's lives from the book. In the book the students tell the story and the teacher is secondary.
Erin Gruwell, the young white middle–class teacher assigned to teach the no–hope children who
society has given up on. The movie "Freedom Writers" is based on the true story of Erin Gruwell.
Erin is a new high school teacher whose first assignment after being a student teacher is teaching
freshman English to a class of angry and disinterested white, black, Latino and Asian students in
Long Beach, California after the Rodney King riots in 1992. Passionate about teaching and

Let's start with the general differences, the book has many more details than the movie and has more
events than the movie. The movie has more of a realistic feel to it. The movie makes you feel more
emotional to the situation. The book leaves you with a more clear understanding of the students lives
and how they feel at that time. Also the movie skipped junior and senior year, so that's like an hour
extra that could have been added in the movie. I think that I like both the movie and the book in
their own ways. The book has great detail to immerse you in their world. The book has more diaries
to understand students lives. The movie has great emotional and realistic value. The movie can give
you more of an impact when your watching it.In the book there are diaries that the movie doesn't get
to like Diary 1 where it says, "I can already see it: we are going to be stuck with some fat–ass,
second grade English book that will put us to sleep before we can flip a page." The book puts more
detail from people's lives that we don't see in the movie. Also the movie also shows things that we
don't see in the book like Ms. G's husband or the shooting at the store with eva. All of that was
hollywood that gave more of an aesthetic feel to the story of freedom writers. I'm going to go into
detail how these two compare. The movie has Ms. G in a relationship with a man and is never
mentioned in the book. They make suspense in the movie

Why Students Learn Best By Having Someone Or Something?
I believe students learn best by having someone or something they can relate to. This allows the
learning to be more meaningful to them. Learning can be a very enlightening experience and when
given the proper tools the sky can be the limit. As an educator I plan to make my classroom very
warm and inviting. I plan to provide my students with the skills and knowledge they need to not
only be successful in my classroom, but to be successful as lifelong learners. Education means
something different to everyone, but it can be a very empowering process that allows and guides
students to develop their passion, critical thinking, compassion, and orientation to compete in a
global marketplace. Education and learning should prepare young people for ... Show more content

Secondly, to know truth is through science. Science is simply the pursuit of knowledge, the study of
what we know and the quest to know more (dictionary.com). Therefore, all scientific study must by
necessity be founded upon the belief that there are objective realities existing in the world and these
realities can be discovered and proven. The very laws of science are founded on the existence of
truth (Dunn, 2005).
Finally, to know truth is by religion. All the religions of the world attempt to give meaning and
definition to life. They are born out of mankind's desire for something more than simple existence.
Through religion, humans seek God, hope for the future, forgiveness of sins, peace in the midst of
struggle, and answers to our deepest questions. Religion is really evidence that mankind is more
than just a highly evolved animal. It is evidence of a higher purpose and of the existence of a
personal and purposeful Creator who implanted in man the desire to know Him. And if there is
indeed a Creator, then He becomes the standard for truth, and it is His authority that establishes that
truth (Dunn, 2005).
Fortunately, there is such a Creator, and He has revealed His truth to us through His Word, the Bible.
Knowing truth is only possible through a personal relationship with the One who claims to be the
Truth–Jesus Christ.

Honesty In Eva Benitez's Admiration
Admiration is feeling a great respect for or looking up to someone or something. Though not
everyone is admired for his noble deeds or incredible feats, almost everyone has someone (or
others), whether he be fictional or real, that effects his life in some way. Much like respect,
admiration is earned. It is achieved through hard work and a considerable amount of effort.
However, a lot of the time, the people who are admired the most do not even realize it. Richard
LaGravenese's movie Freedom Writers illustrates the story of a group of troubled teenagers who
undeniably deserve admiration. It proves that even the most problematic teens can achieve greatness

Self–motivation, or intrinsic motivation, is being genuinely interested in what one is doing or
learning about. People who are intrinsically motivated do not have to be told to do a task or be
rewarded for doing their work. One example of self–motivation is when Marcus chooses to learn
more about the Holocaust. Mrs. Gruwell has the class read The Diary of Anne Frank and everyone
in the class does. However, not everyone goes as far as Marcus does. In his spare time, Marcus
chooses to go to the library and pick up even more books about Anne Frank. There is no reward or
requirement for him to read these books, but he does it anyway because he honestly enjoys reading
about Anne Frank. He tells Mrs. Gruwell and Eva Benitez that in a way he can somewhat relate to
Anne Frank. Marcus' interest in Anne Frank reminds me of my own interest in psychology. I
remember a time when we were talking about why we do the things we do and what motivates us to
do them while in class a few years ago. I had always been very interested in psychology and how the
brain works and the conversation made me even more curious. I was motivated to research about the
brain on my own time. I began with just searching for things on the internet, and that led me to
eventually going as far as getting books on the brain from the local library. After about a week, I

EARTH
Earth is a 1998 Indian period drama film directed by Deepa Mehta. The story is set in Lahore in the
time period directly before and during the partition of India in 1947. The film recounts the holocaust
of Partition through the eyes of Lenny, a crippled Parsi girl. Lenny 's parents live in Lahore with an
army of servants, including the delectable ayah, a beautiful Hindu woman, Shanta.
The movie starts with Lenny revisiting her childhood days as a student coloring her drawing, and
remembering the downfall of British Empire in India as she states something which indicates the
theme of story that it will portray for next 101 minutes and upon which the story will build around.
The words she stated accounts as– "Hindu, Muslim and Sikhs who had lived together as one entity
for centuries suddenly started to clamor for pieces of India for themselves. The arbitrary line of
division the British would draw to carve up India in August of 1947 would scar the subcontinent
forever." This dialogue clearly states that India was very near to getting its independence from the
British Rule and for the final time the nation might have to become a victim to British's much
famous "DIVIDE & RULE" policy which will blow the nation into partition forming 2 separate
countries– INDIA & PAKISTAN and in the dialogue she clearly predicts the ill effects people will
have to face at the time of partition as she says that it would scar the subcontinent forever. Such a

The Negative Impact Of Social Integration InFreedom...
"We are all ordinary people... but even an ordinary secretary or a housewife or a teenager can,
within their own small ways, turn on a small light in a dark room," this sentiment is prevalent in the
movie Freedom Writers. According to IMDb, Freedom Writers was written in 1999 and made into a
film in 2007. Directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn, Imelda
Staunton, and Patrick Dempsey, this skillful cast characterizes the immense amount of emotion and
unique cases of the movie perfectly ("Freedom Writers"). The setting of this movie is in Long
Beach, California and begins with an inexperienced teacher being thrown into a school that was
experimenting with integration. However, their integration program was not working in their school,
and bringing diversity in did not help because the people were not willing to change or accept others
that were unlike them. Mrs. Gruwell, played by Hilary Swank, was determined to teach her students
to get along with one another. Freedom Writers clearly portrays the negative impact that social
inequality has on our society, and the lessons taught in the movie can still enlighten humanity today.
Within her first couple of weeks at Woodrow Wilson High School, Mrs. Gruwell had become
introduced to the integration system as well as racism, violence, and gang affiliations that were
present throughout the community. At first, her enthusiasm to teach was challenged as she struggled

thing a teacher can do is give the child hope that someone actually does believe in them. In the EPY

The movie was directed by Richard LaGravenese and it was released in 2007. This movie discusses

to overcome the limitations imposed on them by society and themselves. She encouraged them to do
something remarkable and memorable and assign them a journal where they could feel free to
express their emotions and feeling and essentially tell the stories that define them. Gruwell draws
students' attention by assigning them The Diary of Anne Frank, a book that promptly become a
guide for the students and open their minds and eyes against intolerance and misunderstanding.
Inspired by this book, the students raised funds to bring Miep Gies, the woman who sheltered the
Frank family, to visit them in California where she declared that the students are the real heroes.
LaGravanese makes an excellent job with the characters, the soundtrack, and the scenery, making
the message clear for the audience. Throughout the movie, the director uses many strong facts that
strengthen his credibility and appeal to ethos, as well as build the movie's argument. The director
establishes his credibility by showing the audience actual video footage of Los Angeles area from
the early 1990s and a series of captions demonstrated the racial tension between different gangs.

Freedom Writers Reflection
In the movie "freedom writers" kids learn to be tolerant and respect others for their color and race. It
shows how these kids from the streets improve and change their perspective on color. The help from
their teacher Ms. Gruwell really inspired and changed them. In their minds everything is about color.
Slowly throughout the movie they change and accept others.
In the beginning of the movie Erin Gruwell the new teacher is excited happy and tolerant of
everyone. Her husband and she are happy and he supports her teaching her new class. On the other
hand, Eva, a girl who at first had no tolerance for others and based everything off color had a father
who was in jail and lived just with her mother. Her whole life was dedicated to the gang life that was
basically her family. She's not excited about school and could really care less. In the middle of them
movie Erin's husband starts to get annoyed and insults those kids who are learning tolerance. The
kids are doing fine and are really changing already. Ms. Gruwell has come home late from school
and her husband is blaming it on the kids which leads to his annoyance. In Eva's life she is
struggling because she is changing and doesn't know if she should lie to protect her boyfriend or let
the guy falsely accused free. She has so much guilt because she knows the right thing to do but since
it's her boyfriend and shell get punished by her gang she's having a hard time. Erin's family is also

Freedom Writers Director: Richard LaGravenese Brief outline of story: The storyline of the movie
takes place between 1992–1995. Beginning with scenes from the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Hilary
Swank plays the role of Erin Gruwell, a new, excited schoolteacher who leaves the safety of her
hometown, Newport Beach, to teach at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, a formerly
high achieving school which has recently had an integration program put in place. Her enthusiasm is

After they raise the money to bring her over, she tells them her experiences hiding Anne Frank.
When Marcus tells her that she is his hero, she denies it, claiming she was merely doing the right
thing. Her denial causes Eva to rethink lying during her testimony. When she testifies, she finally
breaks down and tells the truth, much to some of her family members' dismay. Meanwhile, Gruwell
asks her students to write their diaries in book form. She compiles the entries and names it The
Freedom Writers Diary. Her husband divorces her and Margaret tells her she cannot teach her kids
for their junior year. She fights this decision, eventually convincing the superintendent to allow her
to teach her kids' junior and senior year. The film ends with a note that Gruwell successfully brought
many of her students to graduation and college. Textual evidence: The opening scene is of the LA

Erin Gruwell is a young new excited teacher at one of the hardest school Woodrow Wilson High

Ms. Gruwell also makes an activity in the classroom which is a game, started by the teacher asked
few questions related to the students' life. At the end of it, the activities that have been carried out
facilitate learning interaction between the students. The teacher, Ms.Gruwell also has asked the
students to write their own diaries, and they are free to write anything about their life. She also has
asked the students to read a novel which can be related to their history life, their past life. These
tasks have made the students to interact with the teachers and among them at one point of time. At
the later part, Ms.Gruwell has brought her students for a trip to the museum, and has invited a few
people of history to meet the students. These activities have also facilitated wider interaction for the
students beyond the classroom where the students have chances to interact with the people of
history. The second thing that I can see is classroom management. Ms. Gruwell was a bit shocked
when at first time she entered the classroom, which the students were all noisy, keep talking with
each other in their own gang and some of them busy doing their own stuff. They were ignored the
existence of the teacher in the classroom. The students were sitting within their own gang or races.
They don't mix at all and one cannot touch and talked with the other who is in the other races or
gang.

Racism In Freedom Writers
Racism is as relevant an issue today as it ever was. Old wounds have opened, and the dark side of
America is being brought to light. Freedom Writers, a 2007 movie adaptation of the 1999 book The
Freedom Writers Diary (Freedom Writers), illustrates just how large an issue racism is in society.
Freedom Writers was directed by Richard LaGravenese and stars Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn,
Patrick Dempsey, and Imelda Staunton (Freedom Writers). Set in Long Beach, California, a first–
time teacher educates her at–first unmotivated students in English while giving them life lessons and
showing them the larger world around them. Those students live in an area that is a battlefield, many
of them embroiled in the ongoing gang wars. Freedom Writers deals with racism by showing the
students that they are all very similar and deal with the same problems, regardless of their race. The
movie opens with footage of the 1994 Los Angeles riots, then transitions to the childhood of the
narrator of the film, a Mexican–American girl named Eva. It shows how racism and gang violence
has shaped her life, with her father being arrested for a crime he didn't commit and being shot at and
beat up among the various examples. We then meet Erin Gruwell, an enthusiastic young teacher,
whose class is comprised of Eva and other "at risk" teens. Gruwell has difficulty getting through to
her students, who self–segregate into racial groups within the classroom. Many students stop
attending class when she forces them

V for Vendetta is a film that contains strong character types but diverts from the original graphic
novel; however, it still presents a powerful message about government. Strong characters can either
make or break a movie. V for Vendetta is a movie that isn't short of strong character types. V's
character type is a complex one to say the least. He is a terrorist, anarchist, philosopher and a lover
of freedom and chaos. At first people might think how the protagonist of a movie can be a terrorist
and still be good, but this factor is what sets V apart from traditional heroes. It is the fact that the
world he lives in is so corrupt and power hungry that he can destroy building and still be considered
a hero. V is the epitome of the phrase "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". The
character of Evey is equally complex. In the beginning of the movie Evey is a young, shy girl who,
through a series of events, lives with V and starts to understand his ideologies, and his romance with
anarchy. Evey represents the ignorance in everyone. She never acknowledges, before meeting V, that
there isn't anything wrong with the government she lives under. Only through understanding and
intimidation does she truly realize what it's like to live without fear. Secondary characters types are
equally important. V's driving force throughout the whole movie is his vendetta against certain party

These are extracts taken from the Marvel blockbuster movie Ironman. By the face of it they seem as
normal conversations taking place amongst three characters. However, in relation to the topic of this
paper, Jarvis will be the example that is being brought into attention. Jarvis is not a person, rather it
is a computer system with the ability to control any machine it is linked to. In fact the name Jarvis is
an acronym J.A.R.V.I.S that stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System. Attention should be
drawn to the fact that Jarvis; rather than simply shutting down, goes to sleep, Tony Stark refers to
him as a buddy, which is slang for friend and Jarvis has a sense of humor! This exemplifies the level
of human capacity that the computer has. In line with this, the movie IRobot also explores a world
where machine and robots are an everyday part of life until they decide to rise against the

The Death Of A Terminally Ill
We are born to die. One can say we are born to make a difference, impact the world, cause a change
no matter how insignificant. However, the truth is we are put on this planet to die. There are books,
movie, dramas, documentaries on the essence of life how to prolong, and stop it, the fountain of
youth. However, when it all boils down to it, the outcome is death. It is unavoidable with life comes
death the yin to its yang one universally incomplete without the other. Out of the millions of those
who die in the world, only a select few get cast with the gruesome knowledge of their approaching
demise Majority of the selected few being the terminally ill. There is about a total of 2,626,418
deaths in the united states in the year of 2015 out of those deaths 1,432,591 die of terminal diseases.
Going through immense pain and suffering to ultimately meet their end. Those who may have been
your friends, family, or acquittanced. With their death being unavoidable why not allow them to take
their last moments in the way that want. With euthanasia or assisted suicide, the terminally ill
patients can do just that. Euthanasia, also known as assisted suicide, means to take a deliberate
action with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. They are given a
choice to relieve themselves of the pain and suffering that they will ultimately kill them in the end.

The plot of this movie can be very well defined as a romantic quest for what is right and just in the
world at that time. The film starts off in the early 12th century with a blacksmith called Balian of
Ibelin (who is actually an artificier, or military engineer) that has just lost his wife to suicide and is
given the chance to go to the Holy Land to seek forgiveness for her sin by his long lost father
Godfrey of Ibelin. This becomes his secondary goal upon arriving in Jerusalem because soon after

In fact, it is said that when Guy failed to attack the Muslims in 1183, Baldwin went into a fit of
anger because he wanted them all dead. The movie makes it seem as though Baldwin wanted to
keep peace between the two groups but that was not true because really, he could not stand the
Muslims and would do almost anything to keep the Holy Land out of their hands.
When it comes to Saladin, the film makes it seem as though he was a man of tolerance and respect
when in reality, he took pleasure in watching the decapitation of hundreds of christen soldiers and
civilians alike. Through out his time as ruler of the Muslims, Saladin Preached jihad(or holy war) on
the Christians and made it very clear that his goal was to take Jerusalem by force and kill all of the
people living behind the walls and on the surrounding lands. Saladin as he is portrayed in the film is
a man who chooses to work together with the Christians to try to find a reasonable balance between
groups and holds them in high regard to himself.6 This is very far from any kind of truth at all.
I believe that this was such a big deal for groups when the movie came out because the film made it
seem as though both men wanted a somewhat peaceful solution to obtaining what they desired when
in fact, that was the last thing they wanted. Both men were very respectable from what I can tell, but

The Virtues of Apathy Essay
The Virtues of Apathy
"I just don't think I can continue to live in a place that embraces and nurtures apathy as if it was
virtue." Morgan Freeman speaks these words in the movie Se7en after declaring that he is going to
quit his job as a detective. His character sees crimes of hate, aggression and murder every day, and
he also observes the public's reaction to them. People turn a blind eye; they no longer care. What has
happened to society? Why has what used to be considered incredibly shocking dissolved into what is
considered an everyday and usual activity? Apathy has become the common response of American
society towards what should be considered shocking because these activities have become
unshocking and "everyday".

Crying and vomiting, love making and dying, and beauty and sickness are paired together and
stressed in his novel Blue of Noon. Bataille's main character is almost a complete opposite to what
is considered a normal human being. The character loves what is evil and debaucherous. He even
finds the dead more sexually attractive than the living. Bataille uses this estranged character to
perform actions that should be everyday; however, the nature of the character performing the actions
unfamiliarizes them. A perfect example of this is when the character is sitting down for an evening
meal at a pleasant restaurant. Instead of finishing the meal and his conversation with the woman
sitting next to him, the character violently stabs the woman in the leg with his fork (Bataille 39).
Such an action is completely out of place, yet it happens as though it is ordinary and everyday.
Looking back from a modern perspective, Highmore states that "Surrealism's attention to everyday
life stands the everyday on its head" (Highmore 49), meaning that the Surrealists accomplished their
task of upsetting the normal and confusing the ordinary. However, Highmore also notes the second
accomplishment of Surrealism when he says, "There is a danger that Surrealism's attempt to make
the familiar (the everyday) unfamiliar has itself become all too familiar"

Earth Is A 1998 Indian Period Drama Film Directed By Deepa...
Such a

Tolerance In Freedom Writers
Henri Frederic Amiel once said, "Our greatest illusion is to believe that we are what we think
ourselves to be." Many times we see ourselves as lesser than what we actually could be. We may let
negative perceptions of ourselves and our abilities lead us to believe we're inferior but it is possible
to become strong enough to break those mental barriers. The film Freedom Writers tells a story
about at–risk freshmen students who live in toxic environments and a gang–ridden neighborhood
while attending an inner–city school with racial tension on the rise. They meet their new English
teacher, Erin Gruwell, who helps turn their mindset around showing them what solace there can be
in picking up a pencil and writing about their hardships in a notebook. What makes this movie even
more powerful is that it is based on a true story that took place in the aftermath of the 1992 Los
Angeles riots. Freedom Writers not only touches upon the ideas of tolerance, reaching one's full
potential, and the meaning of success, but further highlights the importance of perseverance and
hope despite one's circumstances.
Freedom Writers demonstrates the concept of tolerance through the character Mrs. Gruwell and
upholds her as an example the viewers can sympathize with. Since Erin Gruwell was a novice in her
teaching, her coworkers at Woodrow Wilson High School began to be bitter, full of anger and
prejudice when they saw she was making a significant impact on the lives of these students, because

How Can Ms. G Make A Big Change
How Can Ms. G Make a Big Change
Freedom Writers is a film about a young, idealistic teacher Erin Gruwell and her class of racially
mixed students at Wilson High School in long Beach, California. It is based on a true story. The
movie shows us, how can a new inspirational teacher change the inner–city and at–risk students,
who all live pretty tough lives, from self –desert to feel free in mind? It's believed that her optimism
and perseverance, using proper strategies to grasp the mental change and devoting all her energy to
the children, which many other teachers can learn from, make her success.
Her optimism and perseverance change the relationship with students from discriminate to mutual
respect.
As a new teacher, Erin Gruwell learned the students' situation from the office and said
optimistically: "I may not a good teacher, but I'll be a good student." But the first day Erin Gruwell
enters classroom with coltish enthusiasm, the students turn blind eyes to her. Part of the reason is the
racism. Ms. G is white which represents privilege that treat badly to them. Meanwhile, education
means nothing to them. They're force to study. After then she witness the terrible behavior students
did, and soon realizes that her diverse group of students is embroiled in the racial gang war culture

movie " Freedom Writers" presents a sensitive case of students coming from low socioeconomic
status, and different backgrounds having to face being together in the same classroom in a time
where the Latinos hate the black and the black hates the white who hates both the Latinos and the
black and so on. In a time where everyone had to stand for "their own", a white teacher chose to be

because this moment is such a violent one in history." The movie deals with violence sparingly and
indirectly. The murder of Medgar Evers, a Jackson, Mississippi civil rights activist, is briefly
addressed in one scene, and in another one of the maids is abused by her husband, who is kept off–
screen. "He is silent, and we never get his story," Blount says. "It's as though all African–American
men are abusive."
Despite good intentions, the film still tells a small, sentimental story that glosses over the hard facts
of the Civil Rights era. For Blount, the Help's overarching "Hollywood narrative" is kinship, the
ultimate bond formed between a white woman and a group of black women, a theme that eclipses
the real issues of racism. The film does not tell the story of far–reaching social change–but rather the
story of the less significant, anecdotal tolerance of a few individuals. "You don't get enough of a
sense of African–Americans as actors on a political stage," he says. The sit–ins, the marches, the bus
boycotts are all left out. Blount points out that the intended heroine is Skeeter, not the maids.

  • 3. Stereotyping, Discrimination and Prejudice in the Media The movie that I have chosen to watch for this particular bonus assignment is called "The Freedom Writers". The movie is about a new teacher and the challenges that she faces in order to make the students in her English class, who come from different ethnics backgrounds and who most hate each other, get along. And, of course, by the end of the movie, she is successful in doing so. Racism played a major role in this movie, seen as a negative aspect in the children's attitudes and mentalities. Racism is defined as negative behaviour on an incorrect assumption that one race is inherently superior to others. This is one of the many forms of discrimination which is defined as unfair actions directed against people based on their race, gender, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the teacher asked the class who knew what the Holocaust was, only one white person out of the entire body of students knew. That is when she realized that the students had very little knowledge about the outside world. This greatly related to Gordon W. Allport's theory. Allport was a psychologist who used questionnaires and interviews to measure the strength of individual prejudice, and who found a correlation between higher education and experiences such as knowledge about cultures, traveling, etc, and "tolerance" or the acceptance of differences between people. In this case, because the students were not taught and were unaware that there were similar cases to theirs, only on a greater scale, they continued to prejudge, and discriminate against each other. Later on in the movie though, because they begin to travel more and gain more knowledge about the outside world, they become more aware and realize that they should change. In addition, three other theorists' ideas play a role in the movie. The first one is Frances Aboud, who believes that children first learn prejudice from the media, family, friends, etc, when they are bombarded with negative images. In this movie, the girl Eva is a perfect example of how she changed the way she sees people. Since she was a little girl, her father used to tell her that she had to fight for their people as the ancestors fought against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Freedom Writers Film Analysis The film "The Freedom Writers" was released in 2007 and was directed by Richard LaGravanese. Richard used multiple film techniques to help the viewers understand how the characters are feeling, their relationships with other characters and what their personality is like. These techniques include camera shots, costume, and lighting, and they were helpful to create a theme of perseverance. In one scene, room 203 is spending a lot of time to raise money so Miep Gies, an elderly lady who lived through World War II and helped hide Anne Frank, can come visit them. After a dance concert and a bake sale, both of which were very popular, they had raised enough for Gies to travel to America. During their struggle to fundraise, Margaret the head teacher would continuously complain to the principle that they shouldn't be able to do so, to no avail. When Miep arrives, students have created a big, bright sign, welcoming her to their school, and they all listen with rapt attention as she tells them her experience in the war. A tracking shot was used as Margaret marched to the principal's office three times and the camera followed her as she moved. A tracking shot attracts the audience's attention to what the camera is focusing on, which in this case is Margaret. A long shot being incorporated into the tracking shot tells the audience that the setting is important as well, and the long shot helps the viewer understand the emotion of the characters as we ... • 7. Stereotyping, Prejudice And Racism In The Freedom Writers The Freedom Writers is an emotional story about a classroom of students. These students all come from different backgrounds; most of them are in gangs or grew up around gang violence. They fear for their lives every single day and do not care whatsoever about getting their education in high school. That is until one teacher, Mrs. Erin Gruwell, comes along. Mrs. Gruwell teaches them that they are not so different at all. She treats them with respect, which is much more than any other teacher has ever given them. She brings them together through her teaching and through literature. In the end, the class is one big family. The story depicts stereotyping, prejudice, and racism in their most common forms. As seen in The Freedom Writers, racism ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In The Freedom Writers, racism is shown through school and gangs. The students in the school are all segregated by race. They are not forced to segregate, but they do by choice. Not only do they stay in their respective race groups, but they also dislike the other races. They were raised to hate each other so that is what they did. This also ties into the gang issues. The gangs are forced to segregate and hate all of the other gangs. This does not help the country's issues with racial tension. In the movie, Mrs. Gruwell uses the idea of gangs to tie all of her students together. Most of them were in gangs, so they knew the struggles of loss and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Toleration And Discrimination In The Movie Freedom Writers Have you ever been discriminated or treated differently because who you are and what your color is? Well in the movie "Freedom Writers" the characters work on toleration and acceptance through reading and writing. Since they are from the city of long beach of California that wasn't easy, considering all the racial tension/conflict that goes on there. Eva is a very intolerant person in the beginning. She didn't even want anything to do with her teacher Mrs. Gruwell because that fact that she was white. ("that's why I hate white people on sight because they took my dad away from me for no reason they just took him because they could") Or any other white people in general. In the middle Eva was holding back a little. As she read and wrote more she realized she wanted to have tolerance but she kept going by "Protect your own" so she did just that. When the whole situation where the Cambodian got shot by someone in her car and she had to go on trial for it since she was a main whiteness. But once she got up to the stand, when everyone's eyes were on her, and they were blankly staring at her waiting for her to give her statement, she told the truth. "Paco did it, Paco shot the boy". Everyone thought she was going to "protect her own" but she didn't, she exposed him and told the truth. By the end Eva had learned tolerance though reading the Anne Frank book and writing her diary's. She also learned sometimes by telling the truth, it has consequences too. Mastering literature is an art that can only be perfected with lots of practice and understanding memory, symbol, and pattern; this only enhances the reading and provokes the reader to analyze the text in a more productive way. Once you become a more avid reader you will be privileged to make comparisons, connections, and your own conclusion from the literary work you're reading with certain aspects of many different literary works you've read along the way. Not only does this bring depth into the work for your better understanding of the "big idea" but also makes it a more enjoyable read. This was my perspective on the book the back when I didn't know any better but as I grew as a reader I realized that Aslan is an apt symbol of Jesus Christ himself. All the evidence pointed towards him as a clear match. This interpretation doesn't necessarily apply to the religious kind but it does help to have some religious literacy. Once you realize that Aslan is the abstract symbol of Jesus Christ you can perceive him as a leader, magnificent, holy, highly admired and loved by many. As expected, in the book Aslan is killed on the Stone Table (think back to Jesus Christ's death on the crucifix) by the White Witch who is the epitome of evil (think back to the people who sent Jesus Christ to his crucifixion). Utilizing memory, symbol, and pattern in this reading made the book more enjoyable and relatable. Without a doubt I appreciated every little thing that occurred with Aslan after this realization, in the rest of the series. Chapter 1 –– Every Trip Is a Quest (Except When It's Not) The five aspects of the Quest are: (a) a quester, (b) a place to go, (c) a stated reason to go there, (d) challenges and trials en route, and (e) a real reason to go there. "The real reason for a quest is always self–knowledge." (Foster pg. 3) Essentially this is a formula that many great writers utilize in their books to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

White Rose Youth Opposition Youth opposition [pic] The German public was only familiar with the resistance group WR, before the actual research began.[1] The late research in the resistance from the youth also arose from mutual beliefs that the youth followed the Nazis from 1933 and that wasn't looked upon as being likely that the youth had started opposition and resistance groups.[2] In relation to the rising interest in resistance group among the youth, people started to examine WR's motives and goals by analyzing the 6 leaflets, the graffiti actions in February 1943, diaries and letters. The people behind The White Rose – a group biography WR had more members than the government had predicted, but I will in this case only be elaborating on the three people that were main characters in the movie "Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage"; Hans Scholl, Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst. [pic] Hans Fritz Scholl was born in 1918 in Württemberg and was out of a middle–class family. The father, Robert Scholl was major in a small city[7]. The Scholl family moved to Ulm in 1930 was the family stayed until and after Sophie and Hans' death. The mother, Magdalene was also a protestant like her husband and Sophie and Hans were also raised in that belief throughout their lives. The information about Hans and Sophie's life are unfortunately limited up until 1933, although there is certainty that Hans was a member of a Protestant youth organization prior to year 1933. According to Inge Aicher Scholl's book, the Scholl children went into HJ with their hearts and souls. • 23. Freedom Writers Analysis The Freedom Writers Diaries is a true story that is definitely based on today's reality. It was watchable the first time I saw the movie and an enjoyable read the first time I had to read the book. In the film, Gruwell (or Miss G as the kids call her) offers hope to a bunch of teenagers by giving them diaries to write in and getting them to read books like "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "The Color Purple". These diaries are what later get compiled into the book. The diaries are a collection of excerpts from the students' journals about their personal experiences with gang violence, domestic violence, substance abuse, the legal system, home and school lives. Some of these were used as voice–overs during the movie that later becomes 'The Freedom Writer's Diary". The entries read in the movie were taken exactly from the book. The movie seems to only follow a few different character's lives from the book. In the book the students tell the story and the teacher is secondary. Erin Gruwell, the young white middle–class teacher assigned to teach the no–hope children who society has given up on. The movie "Freedom Writers" is based on the true story of Erin Gruwell. Also the movie skipped junior and senior year, so that's like an hour extra that could have been added in the movie. I think that I like both the movie and the book in their own ways. Science is simply the pursuit of knowledge, the study of what we know and the quest to know more (dictionary.com). Therefore, all scientific study must by necessity be founded upon the belief that there are objective realities existing in the world and these realities can be discovered and proven. The very laws of science are founded on the existence of truth (Dunn, 2005). Finally, to know truth is by religion. All the religions of the world attempt to give meaning and definition to life. They are born out of mankind's desire for something more than simple existence. Through religion, humans seek God, hope for the future, forgiveness of sins, peace in the midst of struggle, and answers to our deepest questions. Religion is really evidence that mankind is more than just a highly evolved animal. It is evidence of a higher purpose and of the existence of a personal and purposeful Creator who implanted in man the desire to know Him. And if there is indeed a Creator, then He becomes the standard for truth, and it is His authority that establishes that truth (Dunn, 2005). Fortunately, there is such a Creator, and He has revealed His truth to us through His Word, the Bible. Directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn, Imelda Staunton, and Patrick Dempsey, this skillful cast characterizes the immense amount of emotion and unique cases of the movie perfectly ("Freedom Writers"). The setting of this movie is in Long Beach, California and begins with an inexperienced teacher being thrown into a school that was experimenting with integration. However, their integration program was not working in their school, and bringing diversity in did not help because the people were not willing to change or accept others that were unlike them. Mrs. Gruwell, played by Hilary Swank, was determined to teach her students to get along with one another. Freedom Writers clearly portrays the negative impact that social inequality has on our society, and the lessons taught in the movie can still enlighten humanity today. Within her first couple of weeks at Woodrow Wilson High School, Mrs. Gruwell had become introduced to the integration system as well as racism, violence, and gang affiliations that were present throughout the community. He is a terrorist, anarchist, philosopher and a lover of freedom and chaos. At first people might think how the protagonist of a movie can be a terrorist and still be good, but this factor is what sets V apart from traditional heroes. It is the fact that the world he lives in is so corrupt and power hungry that he can destroy building and still be considered a hero. During the first day of sophomore year, Erin made a party and made her class do a Toast for Change, allowing everyone to express their struggles and what they want to change about themselves. At the end, Erin asked her students to write their diaries in book that she named Freedom Writers. Her husband divorces her and Margaret tells her she cannot teach her kids for their junior year. The film starts off in the early 12th century with a blacksmith called Balian of Ibelin (who is actually an artificier, or military engineer) that has just lost his wife to suicide and is given the chance to go to the Holy Land to seek forgiveness for her sin by his long lost father Godfrey of Ibelin. This becomes his secondary goal upon arriving in Jerusalem because soon after the start of their journey, Balian's father dies and passes on his legacy to Balian making him the new Baron of Ibelin. In fact, it is said that when Guy failed to attack the Muslims in 1183, Baldwin went into a fit of anger because he wanted them all dead. The movie makes it seem as though Baldwin wanted to keep peace between the two groups but that was not true because really, he could not stand the Muslims and would do almost anything to keep the Holy Land out of their hands. When it comes to Saladin, the film makes it seem as though he was a man of tolerance and respect when in reality, he took pleasure in watching the decapitation of hundreds of christen soldiers and civilians alike. Through out his time as ruler of the Muslims, Saladin Preached jihad(or holy war) on the Christians and made it very clear that his goal was to take Jerusalem by force and kill all of the people living behind the walls and on the surrounding lands. Saladin as he is portrayed in the film is a man who chooses to work together with the Christians to try to find a reasonable balance between groups and holds them in high regard to himself.6 This is very far from any kind of truth at all. I believe that this was such a big deal for groups when the movie came out because the film made it seem as though both men wanted a somewhat peaceful solution to obtaining what they desired when in fact, that was the last thing they wanted. Morgan Freeman speaks these words in the movie Se7en after declaring that he is going to quit his job as a detective. His character sees crimes of hate, aggression and murder every day, and he also observes the public's reaction to them. People turn a blind eye; they no longer care. What has happened to society? Bataille's main character is almost a complete opposite to what is considered a normal human being. The character loves what is evil and debaucherous. He even finds the dead more sexually attractive than the living. Bataille uses this estranged character to perform actions that should be everyday; however, the nature of the character performing the actions unfamiliarizes them. A perfect example of this is when the character is sitting down for an evening meal at a pleasant restaurant. Instead of finishing the meal and his conversation with the woman sitting next to him, the character violently stabs the woman in the leg with his fork (Bataille 39). Such an action is completely out of place, yet it happens as though it is ordinary and everyday. Looking back from a modern perspective, Highmore states that "Surrealism's attention to everyday life stands the everyday on its head" (Highmore 49), meaning that the Surrealists accomplished their task of upsetting the normal and confusing the ordinary. However, Highmore also notes the second accomplishment of Surrealism when he says, "There is a danger that Surrealism's attempt to make the familiar (the everyday) unfamiliar has itself become all too familiar" ... The arbitrary line of division the British would draw to carve up India in August of 1947 would scar the subcontinent forever." This dialogue clearly states that India was very near to getting its independence from the British Rule and for the final time the nation might have to become a victim to British's much famous "DIVIDE & RULE" policy which will blow the nation into partition forming 2 separate countries– INDIA & PAKISTAN and in the dialogue she clearly predicts the ill effects people will have to face at the time of partition as she says that it would scar the subcontinent forever. • 64. Tolerance In Freedom Writers Henri Frederic Amiel once said, "Our greatest illusion is to believe that we are what we think ourselves to be." Many times we see ourselves as lesser than what we actually could be. We may let negative perceptions of ourselves and our abilities lead us to believe we're inferior but it is possible to become strong enough to break those mental barriers. The film Freedom Writers tells a story about at–risk freshmen students who live in toxic environments and a gang–ridden neighborhood while attending an inner–city school with racial tension on the rise. They meet their new English teacher, Erin Gruwell, who helps turn their mindset around showing them what solace there can be in picking up a pencil and writing about their hardships in a notebook. What makes this movie even more powerful is that it is based on a true story that took place in the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Freedom Writers not only touches upon the ideas of tolerance, reaching one's full potential, and the meaning of success, but further highlights the importance of perseverance and hope despite one's circumstances. Freedom Writers demonstrates the concept of tolerance through the character Mrs. Gruwell and upholds her as an example the viewers can sympathize with. Since Erin Gruwell was a novice in her teaching, her coworkers at Woodrow Wilson High School began to be bitter, full of anger and prejudice when they saw she was making a significant impact on the lives of these students, because they ... "You is smart, you is kind, you is important." This quote is directly from director Tate Taylor's movie The Help, personalized from the novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett. The Help follows one Caucasian, wealthy young woman Skeeter (portrayed by Emma Stone) and the connections and relationships she shares with several African American domestic workers or "babysitters" (portrayed by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer). "The Civil Rights era is depicted as largely peaceful for whites. Race is sanitized. I found it distressing because this moment is such a violent one in history." The movie deals with violence sparingly and indirectly. The murder of Medgar Evers, a Jackson, Mississippi civil rights activist, is briefly addressed in one scene, and in another one of the maids is abused by her husband, who is kept off– screen. "He is silent, and we never get his story," Blount says. "It's as though all African–American men are abusive." Despite good intentions, the film still tells a small, sentimental story that glosses over the hard facts of the Civil Rights era. For Blount, the Help's overarching "Hollywood narrative" is kinship, the ultimate bond formed between a white woman and a group of black women, a theme that eclipses the real issues of racism. The film does not tell the story of far–reaching social change–but rather the story of the less significant, anecdotal tolerance of a few individuals. "You don't get enough of a sense of African–Americans as actors on a political stage," he says. The sit–ins, the marches, the bus boycotts are all left out. Blount points out that the intended heroine is Skeeter, not the maids. What some critics have termed "white savior films" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
