Youth Navigator Case Study
1. Youth Navigator Case Study
The Youth Navigator program is an essential component to our Alumni & Reentry services.
Navigators are formerly incarcerated youth who have successfully completed the terms of their
probation and are steadily moving forward with their educational and career goals. They act as peer
counselors, especially to recent camp–released students, to support them in navigating re–entry,
higher education, and employment paths. Relationships are leveraged through the Youth Navigator's
personal experiences as system involved youth, which they are then able to use to model positive
behavior and decision–making skills. Specifically, Youth Navigators support C/Hope staff with case
management needs (i.e. mentorship, attend field probation and school appointments, and referrals to
community resources), facilitate outreach and implementation of community events, and strengthen
leadership of alumni. MSW counselors also provide supervision to Youth Navigators and
individualized support on a case–by–case basis. Due the strong collaboration between C/Hope staff,

Thus far, youth navigators have been involved in the SB 81 Kilpatrick Redesign and Replacement
Project, and have provided valuable insight on the role of alumni in reentry services. In addition, our
alumni leaders also brought attention to SB124, a bill that limits solitary confinement in juvenile
justice facilities. Students attended letter–writing workshops and our youth navigators also had the
opportunity to meet with senator staffers to personally deliver testimony on the harmful effects.
Youth Navigators have also been invited to participate in several reentry conferences, including this
quarter the "Reentry Solutions for Success" in Sacramento and the "New Beginning for Partnerships

3. Youth Navigators Narrative Report
The California Wellness Foundation grant has supported our main core objectives of our Alumni &
Reentry Prorgram through the support of our reentry counselors and youth navigators who assist
students in implementing their short and long term goals outlined in their Indidividual Service Plans.
In addition, we have also developed a more structured and formalized Youth Navigators program.
This transition has allowed our Youth Navigators to carry more case management responsiblities and
increased visibility in the community as juvenile justice advocates.
During the past fiscal year, our students have greatly increased their partcipation in community
engagements. Two of our youth navigators are regularly attending the Kilpatrick Redesign meetings,
and providing valuable feedback on the role of alumni in reentry services. We have also been invited
to several reentry conferences for this quarter, including the Reentry Conference in Sacramento and
the Los Angeles County Partnership conference. Most importantly, our Youth Navigators have
successfully facilitated numberous outings, which is critical in developing the peer community
support of our alumni members. Just recently we successfully launched our first annual alumni
retreat with the support of UCLA Outdoors Challenge Course and Street Poets who facilitated a rite
of passage for our students. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While in the past, we have incorporated mentors and coaching through the use of our prior Youth
Navigators, we realized our alumni were in need of more support and training. This fiscal year we

5. Age Of Exploration Vs American Exploration
The Age of exploration was from the late 1400 to the 1700. It was a time period where many
countries sought out new resources and trade routes. The two countries that were notorious in
exploration during the Renaissance were Portugal and Spain. The Portuguese and Spanish were
rivals in exploration. They were always competing with each other over who was better. Spanish
exploration was more effective than Portuguese exploration because the Spanish went to land
unexplored, colonised and made more voyages than the Portuguese.
Trade was a necessity for early kingdoms after the Middle Ages. People, especially kings and
monarchs wanted new trade routes for more wealth. Spain's motivation for trade was to explore
unknown land to find gold(Frey 333). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Columbus was a very important figure in this decision because he was one of the most known
explorer from the Renaissance. He made four voyages to unexplored land, traded and became
friends with natives, then he colonized and killed most of the natives. Prince Henry the navigator
was also a widely known explorer of the Renaissance. He mapped and made voyages to India
around the Horn of Africa. In addition he did take two voyages. But why Christopher Columbus was
better is that he took four voyages to an unexplored and unknown place. Portugal had better
equipment and better knowledge going into exploration but they didn't use that to their advantage.
They had many maps created and they had a variety of ships like larger ships for ocean water and
smaller ships for smaller bodies of water to travel on. However, the Spanish did have a large armada
and they used that to their advantage in bringing back more men to colonize the native land.
Additionally they had many more explorers to go and find these places to explore in more depth.
The Spanish had much more money going into their process of exploration and finding new land,
trade routes and even gold. The Spanish were better in exploration than the Portuguese because they
had more resources which include ships and money and they also took many more

Introduction The Hospital is an advanced tertiary medical center located in Palm Beach County,
Florida. Recently, the Hospital has seen a growing trend towards higher utilization of the Emergency
Department by patients who routinely go the Emergency Department for their primary healthcare
needs. Patients are going to the Emergency Department for non–emergent reasons because they
have not developed a relationship with a primary care doctor ("ED Navigators," 2014). There is
major concern that patients are not connecting with a primary care provider and they are not
accessing the appropriate level of care for their medical needs. The Hospital faces a negative
financial impact and decrease in the quality of patient care because patients continue to routinely use
the Emergency Department for their primary healthcare needs. This report recommends the hiring of
a Patient Navigator. The Patient Navigator will assist patients that use the Emergency Department
for non–emergent reasons to connect with a primary care provider. This report includes the
recommendation for solving this problem, the supporting reasons for the recommendation, the
counterargument and rebuttal, and a concluding section. In addition, this report examines the

Zheng He was one of the greatest explorers in the Age of Exploration however, his fame is not
widely celebrated today. Zheng He was the powerful and wealthy adviser for Emperor Yongle of the
Ming Dynasty. The Emperor sent Zheng He on a mission to travel to foreign lands ranging from the
tip of India to the eastern parts of Africa to give them gifts to show China's power and dominance.
He started these voyages in 1405 and eventually captained seven of them before retiring. The
Chinese felt that the cost of the expeditions outweighed the benefits. Therefore they dismantled all
of the ships and destroyed all of the evidence. Zheng He's voyages were lost in history and has not
earned the fame that he rightfully deserves. Zheng He's voyages should be celebrated because he
traveled extraordinary distances, he had a great deal of ships and crew, and provided China with
many benefits. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the map and chart created by National Geographic titled "China's Great Armada", Zheng He
traveled to Mombasa Kenya which is ~19,000 miles roundtrip(Doc A). This accomplishment is
important because far seafaring expeditions of this extent were nearly unheard of in the 15th century
due the lack of technology and knowledge. Therefore Zheng He's skills as a great explorer are
undoubtable. Moreover in the chart it exhibits that Zheng He transversed Calicut, Hormuz, Malindi,
Mogadishu, and Mombasa(Doc A). All of these countries were over ~11,000 miles roundtrip and
therefore, Zheng He displays that he can consistently travel far distances(Doc A). This further

their ability to evaluate so many diverse organizations and their methodology. Charity Navigator is
seen as an organization that promotes the idea "that donors should favor charities that keep their

19. The Navigator Program At Dfw Airport
Throughout our lives we find ourselves associating with different groups of people. The thing that
makes all the difference is the impact one make when one finds himself/herself part of a discourse
community. Whether you impacted the community or the community impacted you, it still matters.
The Navigator Program at DFW Airport was my community. Much of my personality and social
skills come from my time volunteering at the airport. Through this program, I learned to guide
travelers to their gates and terminals, while continuing to learn about the little nooks and cranny's
that the airport held. I've grown much since that scared teen who was afraid of interacting with
strangers, but my experiences and how they nurtured me are what changed my life for the better.
One of the ways my discourse community impacted me was by forcing me to become independent. I
could no longer hide behind my parents. This began when I first applied for the program. With the
application in hand I felt nervous and under pressure. It was almost as if it was my first job! What
differentiates the Navigator Program from other volunteer programs is that the first step you go
through is an interview. My mentor, Mr. Mehdi Mostowfi, is the lead ambassador and generally
interviews all incoming navigators. He asks us key questions about our habits and personality traits,
and then assesses us to see where we need improvement to be a successful navigator. I will be
honest, the questions were a bit intimidating

Many European countries sent explorers to discover a new sea route to the East Indies, which were
abundant with spices and valuable trading items. Vasco da Gama had made many brave
accomplishments. On November 22, 1497 he rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Da Gama's first
route took him closer to South America, but he had to go out that far to avoid the trouble of the
coast. Unexpectedly, the first Portuguese sailors experienced stormy weather, strong winds, and
massive currents closer to Africa. Da Gama shortened time of the trip by increasing the miles in
order to avoid potential hazardous disasters of the coast. By going so far out from the coast, Vasco's
crew sailed the longest voyage, which covered four thousand miles before the winds blew them back
to Africa just north of the Cape of Good Hope. After setting sail once again, Vasco went so far west,
that he was only six hundred miles away from South America. On November 4th, after ninety–six
days in open seas, da Gama reached the Cape of Good Hope in half the time as Dias. Da Gama's
stop in Africa, on the second half of his voyage, showed him the real life of the African people.
Many were friendly. The differences between them were met with delight, trading, music, and
dancing. Although, in the end, the Africans refused to help and destroyed the stone markers (called
Padroes) and desecrated sacred crosses, which da Gama left to mark his route and claim territory for
Portuguese trading posts. A few days later da Gama stopped in Mossel Bay to leave the supply ship
behind, because it wasn't needed any more. After Mossel Bay, da Gama took a stop in Mozambique
to recover and trade with the natives as well as build another Padroes. While da Gama was in
Mozambique, he saw the most amazing riches from India. One sailor wrote in his diary that Arab
ships were "laden with gold, silver, cloves, pepper, ginger, pearls, jewels, and rubies... all of which

Chasing the American Dream
As Dan Rather once said, "A college degree is the key to realizing the american dream, well worth
the financial sacrifice because it is supposed to open the door to a world of opportunity." The two
colleges that people are impelled on attending are the University of Indiana Bloomington (IU) and
the University of Louisville (UofL). There are a variety of similarities between this colleges. An
example is that both colleges have a student–faculty ratio of 17:1. In this non–biased based essay
there will comparing and contrasting between these college paths. The expenses at IU and UofL are
similar in a few ways. One similarity is the total costs in state. The estimated total cost on campus in
state for IU is $24,719 (BigFuture). The estimated total cost on campus in state for UofL is $24,344
(College Navigator). However, there is a difference in the total costs out of state. The estimated total
costs on campus out of state for IU is $48,072 (BigFuture). The estimated total costs on campus out
of state for UofL is $32,232 (College Navigator). When comparing prices between the college that

28. Henry The Navigator Thesis
Fueling the Age of Exploration through Power
On March 4th 1394 Henry the Navigator was born into Portuguese royalty. Henry, the third son of
King John I and Phillipa of Lancaster, grew up in the royal family and he received a great education
and became inspired by astrological literature and military campaigns. He also witnessed his father's
adventure on many conquests. Henry and his brothers hoped that one day, they too could voyage
over the oceans and conquer new land. However, while Henry wanted to find and take over new
lands, he never went on a journey himself. Henry was a great sponsor and advocate of trips along
the West african coast and Madeira Islands. While Henry may never have journied, he did manage to
begin the new era of exploration. Henry helped to inspire a love of travel and curiosity as well as a
growing desire for worldly pleasures as he usually exploited natural resources for personal benefit.

30. The Navigator Theme
The theme of this book The Navigator by Eoin McNamee is about Owen and the people that he
meets. The theme is that sometimes people just have to trust, this is proven because owen comes
into their camp knowing no one and his father being a supposed criminal. His father was seen as a
criminal because they thought he took the main piece of the a machine that they needed to keep
everyone safe and then ended up dying in a car crash and losing the piece in the process. This reason
fits this book because Owen had no reason to believe what they said about his father's death because
all he ever knew was that he committed suicide,This was a blow to Owen because he did not know
who to trust but to stay to the theme which is that sometimes someone just need to trust. His father

Owen was a person that was simply let into their lives and was accepted as the person he is as
quoted in ( 64–66 McNamee ). This proves that the theme is correct because they adizero reasons to
trust him but they disregarded his father's history and took him under their wing and taught him
about all their plans and machines used to keep their people safe. They also trusted him after he
"betrayed" them after being captured by the enemy. This is proved when they send their leaded out
after him as a last resort because they needed him(186 McNamee), but they also trusted his story of
how he got there and what he was doing. This proves that the theme can be applied to this story
because sending their valuable leader out into the battle to find Owen and to bring him back, they
risked many lives on a person who they did not know. These are two reasons that this story supports
the theme being sometimes someone just needs

32. Elmore The Navigators : Analysis
Elmore begins this adventure into mentoring providing us two definitions. The first, later attributed
to Dawson Trotman of The Navigators, is strategically investing in the lives of a few people now
who will be able to benefit greater numbers in the future (Elmore, 2012, Kindle Locations 137, 349).
The second definition he shares gives the process a personal feel, "a relational experience through
which one person empowers another by sharing their wisdom and resources" (Elmore, 2012, Kindle
Location 144). The succinctness and complexity of these definitions encapsulate the framework to
which Elmore returns throughout. The key elements revealed here are relationship, investment,
process, focus, empowerment, and multiplication. These elements ... Show more content on

So, is it still worth our time if only one–third of the mentees reproduce themselves? Even if only 4
people follow through and mentor 12 more people each time, at the end of six generations, the
return on the original investment of 12 people was still of over 15,000 people or an average yearly
return on investment of 21,000%. No one should turn down an investment opportunity like this. In
fact, the reason I have invested 21 years in the lives of students is due to the investment someone
had made me. Once we buy into the process, the next logical question is what does it take to prepare
to be a mentor. Elmore warns that if one waits until feeling prepared, then likely, no one would ever
be mentored (2012, Kindle Locations 1038–1039). If we refrain from sharing our knowledge and
experience until a particular level of proficiency is attained, we deprive future generations of the
foundation already available to empower them as effective leaders (Elmore, 2012, Kindle Locations
1041–1043). This is reminiscent of a conversation with my father about being prepared for children,
the ultimate mentoring relationship. He assured me that we were as ready as we would ever be and
waiting to feel prepared would only result in never planning to have children. Unfortunately, many
potential mentors fail to ever reproduce themselves because they never feel prepared. After making
his case for mentoring, Elmore advocates for

34. Essay on Families as Navigators and Negotiators
In a 2010 article, "Families as Navigators and Negotiators: Facilitating
Culturally and Contextually Specific Expressions of Resilience," Ungar explores the concept of
resiliency as a process achieved by families through finding resources and effectively negotiating for
them. Ungar explains that the achievement of resilience can look different for people from different
cultures based on culturally relevant definitions of positive outcomes and culture specific methods
of reaching outcomes. The author discusses ways in which social workers encourage resilience
within diverse populations on different levels of social work while operating from a de–centered
point of view. Ungar is effective in making clear that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Families and individuals attempting to achieve resilience can be described as subystems of larger
systems. According to Hutchison (2013), many systems have boundaries that indicate who is in and
who is out (p. 39). The systems idea of boundary is pertinent to the culturally competent resilience
model because in many cases boundaries can keep families away from resources that could be
employed to help them be resilient. In the same way, in cultures where these boundaries tend to be
more open or loose, individuals may be more well–equipped with the skills they need to access
resources. Luhmann in his 1987 work on systems theory touches directly on the idea of culture and
closed systems proposing that as systems become very complex, they become more and more closed
to each other (as cited in Hutchison, 2013, p. 41). Luhamnn posits that with the development of
culture and languages within a closed system they become unable to receive feedback from other
systems. On the individual level, this could manifest in the inability of an individual or family to
fare well unless met with culturally specific interventions which Ungar emphasizes the importance
of.
The Ecologial Perspective Ungar's article also relates to the ecological theory of human behavior. As
outlined in Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda (2012), the ecological

Prince Henry is called a navigator, but he never sailed. Henry the Navigator was not an explorer,
although he sponsored many trips across the sea and sent trade ships to

1394, he founded the Atlantic slave trade, and he colonized the Madeira Islands.
Prince Henry was born in 1394 as the third son of King John I and Phillipa of
Lancaster. When he was 21, he, his father, and his brothers led an attack on a town in
Morocco called Ceuta to conquer more land for Portugal. When Prince Henry was 47 years old he
founded the Atlantic slave trade by sponsoring the travels of two ships that brought Africans back to

Prince Henry's day in time, they didn't know that the Earth was a sphere. They thought that the Earth
was like a map, small and flat. Sailors believed that if they sailed too far, they would fall off the
ends of the Earth. Even though they were afraid, word from Prince
Henry ordered the crew to go on. When they did, they sailed farther than ever before.
He sponsored missions to go to many other places. Near 1418, they came to the
Canary Islands around the Spanish area, but they were already claimed by Spain. In
1418, his ships reached the Madeira Islands in Portugal, which had not yet been claimed by Spain,
so they established a colony there. That colony became the most successful colony of all of the
expeditions that Prince Henry sponsored.
Prince Henry the Navigator founded expeditions that ended up in the Madeira
Islands and helped people overcome their fears of going too far and, as superstition said, "falling off
of the ends of the Earth." Henry the Navigator was important to history because if he had not
sponsored the trip to colonize the Madeira Islands or the trips to

Unfortunately many "hot issues" of IPOs produce a big chunk of their gains on the first day of

Muslims, and their nautical experts weren't sure about his plan, so they rejected Columbus. However
the idea Columbus proposed must intrigued them because they kept him on a retainer. The Spanish

Spanish monarch agreed to finance Columbus's expedition. Columbus was given three ships to sail

Columbus and his crew finally reached land after 36 days of sailing across the Atlantic. He and his
crew landed on an island in the present day Bahamas. They claimed it for Spain. Columbus and his

As mentioned in the letter from the editor, this magazine is about lives that made history. Lorenzo de
Medici and Prince Henry the Navigator were both powerful and significantly influential people of
their time. While Lorenzo de Medici was passionate about being a patron to the arts, Prince Henry
"The Navigator" had a passion for exploration and navigation, as suggested by his name. Both men
were merchants – amongst other occupations –who were majorly influenced by humanism, and held
a secure, both economical and political power.

aspired to be a leader much like many of his relatives and Prince Henry had royal blood flowing

Lorenzo also had to carry a lot of weight on his shoulders very suddenly, with his brother Giuliano's

Five years from now I will be sixty years old. Many people think that at that age I should be
planning for my retirement. I hope that my good health will continue and that I will have earned my

time capacity would allow me to return to nursing education.
Navigation is a new role for nursing. If the program is to grow into disease specific navigators my
role will need to change. Educating existing physicians at my facility has been a challenge. Many
physicians are not willing to discuss the patient's diagnoses, or treatment options. Instead they tell
the patients their diagnoses or treatment options. Many physicians practicing at my hospital seem to
lack the time or know how to have these conversations. I have been told by several patients, they did
not fully understand "the paper " the physician gave them regarding their surgical options. They
have told me they just chose what the physician recommended or what their relative had done. This
is frustrating for me because my role was specifically created to assist physicians in these
circumstances to save them valuable time. N0 matter how physicians are educated, they do not refer

The navigators are involved with tumor board or conferences, with multidisciplinary centers within
the cancer community. Therefore, a navigator's function is very much a patient–centered duty.
Problem
The oncology outpatient clinic is a clinic that serves the community. Consequently, we see a lot of
patients on a daily basis. The hospital itself is one of the teaching hospitals in the Dallas Fort Worth
metroplex. Therefore, following and caring for all the patients, fellows are attending is a lot of
responsibilities for a few nurse navigators. Moreover, previously, we had only five navigators to
cover the entire practice. Additionally, the navigators had lots of duties besides formerly described
duties. The navigators still needed to prep the clinics for the nurse as well as return the patient's
telephone calls, etc. Though the navigators were excellent in everything they did, still somethings
were getting missed. For instance, a patient will show up for follow–up visits with no scans or an
echo, especially if the patient is on Herceptin, (Trastuzumab–associated cardiotoxicity) thus

Title: Assess the factors which stimulated Atlantic Maritime exploration in 15th century
During the period of time 1400–1499 great gains were made by the Europeans in their quest for
knowledge of the world they lived in. In this time period the Europeans circum–navigated Africa,
located the territories of the West Indies and basically redrew the map of the world. All these things

Thus each time a new tax was applied to the goods the Moslem merchants raised the price at which
they would sell the goods at to recoup their expenses. Therefore as the Italian merchants had to
cover their expenses that raised the prices of the goods also. This fact proved economically
unacceptable to the other European merchants. The high cost of purchasing these goods made
European merchants willing to fund exploration to find an alternate route to the goods of India. The
merchants believed that by finding the alternate route they could remove the middle men from the
process of obtaining the goods and also as the route would not have to go through any other
kingdom the goods would not be subjected to the taxation with increased the price it cost to obtain
the goods. Therefore by obtaining the goods at a cheaper price the merchant realized they would
gain vastly increased profits. Similarly it was not only merchants that saw the importance of finding
and controlling a shorter route to the riches of Africa and India. Nations also saw the great benefits
controlling such routes would bring to them. This was the principle reason that nations such as
Portugal and Spain pursued maritime exploration. Portugal had to engage in this activity due to the

73. The Black Death In The Film The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey
The Black Death was an event that truly changed the course of history. Beginning in medieval 1348,
the death quickly spread from Venice, Italy throughout all of Europe. A group that was particularly
effected was the European Christians. Many believed that the plague was a punishment from God,
and thus reacted to the crisis through religious methods as well as a wide variety of medical methods
and by separating themselves from those who were ill. These responses are important through the
way in which they convey what is was like to be a European Christian during the time of the Black
Death. One way in which many Christians responded to the mass death occurring around them was
by turning to the church in hopes of a cure. For instance, many people tried bargaining with God
based off their belief that their sins were the cause of the death. This is seen in the film The
Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey in which the characters attempt to journey to a celestial city with
the goal of raising a holy cross on its cathedral. They believe that by presenting this offering to God
they will receive protection from the Black Death and save their small village. Along with this
method of pleading with God, other religious ways in which Christians reacted was through the rise

that barriers to screening mammography services significantly impact the percent of eligible women

Microsoft Anti–Trust Lawsuit Microsoft is one of America's top computer companies but, in 1999, it

Illinois (which owned the trademark on the name Mosaic) threatened legal action. Netscape can be
considered an advocate for the dot com era. They were not the first internet start–up, but they were
the only one that mattered. Netscape produced Netscape Navigator which went on to become its first
widely popular internet application. Netscape Navigator became really popular after the launch of
the World Wide Web. Netscape Navigator introduced millions to the web. SSL, Java, JavaScript,
open APIs and support for online media were innovations that Netscape Navigator made relevant.
The next best thing of Netscape was the Netscape IPO. It helped launch the internet era that we are
currently living in. It is thought that Netscape was born in Silicon Valley, but actually it was in
Champaign Urbana, Illinois at the University of Illinois. It all started with a bunch of young

81. Why Is Prince Henry The Navigator
"The meeting of two eternities, the past and future....is precisely the present moment." Infante D.
Henrique of Portugal, better know as Prince Henry the Navigator, was born in Portugal in 1394.
During his time alive, Henry was a big supporter of multiple sea voyages, mapping the west African
coast along the way. Henry not only encouraged sailors in his homeland, but was also able to spread
encouragement to other sea explorers for years to come. Without Henry the Navigator, Europe
would lose one of its key players in the Age of Exploration, stopping Europe's further development
for some time. On March 4, 1394, Prince Henry the Navigator was born to King John I of Portugal
and Philippa of Lancaster in Porto, Portugal. Henry had 11 siblings total, 3 of which were half
siblings, and had 3 that died during early childhood. Two of his brothers, Duarte and Pedro, had an
interest in sea exploration, fueling Henry's interest in the subject. Henry always had a high ambition.
From an early age, all Henry wanted to do was win a kingdom for himself, focusing his interest in
gathering new lands. Henry was educated the same as his brothers. Their parents kept watchful eyes
on Henry and his brothers during these times. Through his education, Henry came out with a strong
like for chivalric romance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Henry's childhood, along with two of his brothers, had a large influence on his later actions,
providing him with what he needed to accomplish his goals. With most of Henry's power
opportunities taken away, he still found a way to keep working towards his goals, all the while
providing Portugal with much power at the beginning of the Age of Exploration. Without Henry to
encourage explorers, Europe would still be afraid to venture past certain borders they had already
set, not knowing there was more to the world they thought they
