Same-Sex Adoption In The United States
In the past few years, the United States has matured to be more accepting towards its gay and lesbian citizens. The LGBT community slowly becoming
represented in society, and gay marriage was recently declared a Constitutionally–guaranteed right in all 50 states. However, there are still many
challenges to overcome before equality is guaranteed for all. One of the important rights that gay and lesbian couples have yet to fully attain is the
opportunity to apply for an adoption without experiencing harsh criticism from adoption agencies and agency officials, along with encountering the
clashing morals from a majority of society. The discrimination faced by homosexual couples in the adoption process is unjust, and the United States
should recognize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul Sullins, a Catholic sociology teacher, claimed that children of same–sex couples "were at over twice the risk of depression compared to persons
raised by man–woman parents." He also concluded that the children were more likely to be suicidal or have anxiety. These conclusions have been
widely used as proof that gay parenting negatively affects children and therefore should not be allowed. But Sullins' reports and the similar claims by
homosexual adoption critics can be proven false. In Sullins' specific case, his research was declared as invalid. This study was posted in a journal
without any editors to view the material, and the study only used 20 children with no information provided on their background, such as how long they
were raised by their homosexual parents (Frank). Not only has the credibility of the study been taken away, but the information presented has conflicted
with various national studies. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics stresses that most children of homosexual parents have seen their
biological parents' divorce, so their physiological state must be understood in that context (Perrin). This means that the emotional and mental health
issues connected to gay parenting does not necessarily connect to the parenting, and

The politically correct answer on how parents should react if their teenage daughter or son comes out to them is to be understanding. Despite the shock
that is felt, responding with love and acceptance rather than rejection lets them know they are valued. Withholding love only hurts everyone involved.
You do not have to accept the choice or approve but lettingthe child know he or she is loved unconditionally is important.
Now here is the reality. Most parents feel guilt that they did something wrong to make their child this way. Some feelings that might be felt are shock
and disbelief. If this is a lifestyle that is not condoned in the household, some parents feel that their understanding is confused as acceptance of this
lifestyle. When all the mixed emotions swirling around it can be very difficult to keep a level head. No one wants their child to have to struggle or

The Bible or other religious outlets have stated homosexuality or anything other than heterosexuality is wrong. Like any other many religions some
take things out of context and spread the misunderstood as truth. Like most prejudice, fear induces hate. Lack of knowledge of the unknown causes a
separation. That separation causes lack of communication.
In addition to the religious view, some will claim that their prejudice is valid based on religion. Since most know the Bible states that
homosexuality is wrong, religious people hop on the fanatic bandwagon. This can also be said about homosexuality. Mass media has romanticized
homosexuality making it hip to be gay, or at least for a girl. Rappers make songs about lesbians and portray lesbians as desirable. Young girls and
boys are watching this and see it as a way to be accepted by their peers. It gives them attention even though it is the wrong kind of attention. Negative

Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights
She looks into her eyes and smiles, leans in and whispers quietly "I love you" while pulling her in forcefully for an embracing hug. "Are you ready
to go" she repeats as she grabs her girlfriends coat and proceeds to the door. Finally, after numerous times of asking, her girlfriend agrees, twists the
doorknob and walks out. They have only taken a few steps out of the safety of their own home when the hurtful words start to pour in. Feeling
embarrassed, tears start rolling down her face. She immediately turns around and goes back inside. Sadly, this is the reality for many. We live in a
world so hateful, that some would rather die than be who they are. A world in which people get belittled for who they love, and have basic rights taken
right out of their hands. Gay rights are human rights. No matter who you are as a person, who you love, or who you associate yourself with you
deserve to be respected. Gay marriage has no effect on the heterosexual community, civil unions are not the same as marriage, and successful
adoptions will happen more frequently. Gay marriage should have no effect on the heterosexual community, something only becomes a problem if
other people make it one. The LGBT community would like nothing more than to just be granted the rights that have been morally denied to them.
These rights include things as simple as having equal employment. According to Federal Law, gays are not protected against workplace
discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the private workplace. LGBT advocate Jennifer Finney Boylan sees this every day. She
witnesses discrimination against gays in the workplace for merly loving someone of the same gender. (Jennifer Finney Boylan. p.19.) Not only are
they discriminated in the workplace they also have to deal with these problems in everyday tasks. Cases have been aired about the denial of serving
gays in local coffee shops, food chains, and certain stores. This is morally wrong, no one should have to live in fear of the hatred they are going to
receive because of who they love. Some may argue that a gay lifestyle undermines traditional values and institutions in this country. Many people hid
behind this reason, whereas if they were to look further into this

Gay Rights, Gay, Lesbian, And Society
Over the past decades, being gay was something no one talked about. It was a subject that was very taboo and society didn't accept. People saw it as a
stage one goes through and something unnatural. Thanks to the media, more and more celebrities have come out of the closet over the years. Soon
people became accepting of the gay community and their life style. Being openly gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual in the workforce can lead to
discrimination. Gay mirages are also frowned upon by society. Unfortunately, there aren't many laws that protect gay rights. Everyday in America,
gay people are being fired, denied a job, refused promotion, or some other form of discrimination. It's not because they don 't qualify for the job it's
because they are gay. 21/50 states in the US have rights set to protect them from facing this discrimination (Eisenberg, Rebecca). 18 out of those 21
states it is illegal to fire transgenders (Eidelson, Josh). So far there are about 28 million workers unemployed because of their sexuality (Bendery, 2014).

1.Tom Harkin, former Democrat U.S Senate, has a mission to pass a Paycheck Fairness Act, Fair Pay Act, and an Equal Pay Act. Harkin had
expressed his views on the issue on last years Equal Pay Day. He felt that there is a big pay gap between men and women. Women are paid less then
men simply because of their gender. Even though the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 (Harkin, 2014), people are not following the act. By passing

Final Paper: Gay Marriage And Religious Freedom
Final Paper: Gay Marriage
A hot topic in American politics today is the question of civil rights. While a civil right is defined as an enforceable right or privilege, people still
have trouble agreeing what should be counted as a civil right. In a recent event, two civil rights that come into contention with each other were gay
marriage and religious freedom. A prime example of the conflict was the case of Kim Davis, who denied same–sex couples marriage licenses based on
religious freedom. The case showed us that a civil right needs to have limitations so as to not infringe on other constitutional civil rights. In other
words, the state should not allow religious freedom to hinder marriage equality. This is what we will examine throughout the

Heterosexism Definition
Every day as a society, we come across some kind of discrimination or prejudice against others or towards us. One specific discrimination we come
across is heterosexism. Although there are laws and rights that protect us from these kinds of discriminations/prejudices, it still occurs on a daily basis.
The definitions of heterosexism vary from text to text, but we find it true that people in heterosexual relationships have more privileges than people
who are in same sex relationships. In comparison to two other definitions of heterosexism, my textbook definition says, "Heterosexism describes an
ideological system that denies, denigrates, and stigmatizes any nonheterosexual form of behavior, identity, relationship, or community" (Whitley...

Heterosexuality privileges includes having positive media images of people of your sexual orientation; not having to lie about who you are, what you
do and where you go, not having to worry about losing your job because of your sexual orientation; receiving validation from your religious
community; being able to adopt children; and being able to join Boy Scouts or openly serving in the military. Being LGBT is the inferior group who is
negatively affected. . Usually nonheterosexual relationships in a family setting is thought to be emotionally inadequate for children. One advantage of
nonheterosexual groups is that they have their own community where they can support each other, like gay pride marches. Another advantage is that
they tend to see each other as equals in same sex relationships. Also in most same sex relationships, both are employed, unlike most heterosexual stay at

Persuasive Essay On LGBT Rights
The LGBT community has made progress towards gaining more rights in recent years, although it has been an uphill battle. In the past year alone
LGBT marriage has been legalized in Australia, Malta, and Germany, with the legalization of LGBT marriage in the U.S. in 2015 also being a
resounding success. In addition, LGBT rights have also become a greater discussion topic in households, radio shows, and broadcasts around the
world. However, while a lot of progress has been made, LGBT individuals and their allies are still struggling for the basic human rights they deserve.
Discrimination feels like a relic of the past––something Americans struggled against and that was outlawed in the 1960s. But this was not the case for
LGBT individuals. Today, in America, land of the free and the home of the brave, a lesbian can be fired simply for beinggay. A gay couple can be
refused a wedding cake for the most important day in their life. A gay couple could be refused their right to adopt a child. Much of this
discrimination is chalked up to a concept called "religious freedom." Religious freedom is the right to deny service based on the idea that it conflicts
with the business owner's religious beliefs, and has been used most recently to defend discrimination against LGBT people. The world has heard this
argument many times before. According to the LA Times, "1960s...a small chain of barbecue restaurants in South Carolina, said that its owner's
freedom of religion would be violated if

Identity Development Model for LGBT Population
Cass (1979) introduced, what is still today, the most widely used identity development model for the LGBT population. It was thought that gay identity
development would serve as the most significant moderator of the physiological stress response. Findings from this study suggest that it affects the
stress response, but not to the degree that was expected. It is possible that a Gay Identity Questionnaire (GIQ) will not accurately capture the gay
identity development, or that the homogeneity of the sample might not produce statistically significant results. However, as one of the post–hoc
analyses self–esteem could account for more of the variance in the stress response. It is not to suggest that gay identity development is not an important
construct to understand, but perhaps it could be captured more accurately. Mohr and Fassinger (2000) identified the many dimensions to the gay and
lesbian experience. It might be that this current study could support the difficulty in quantitatively measuring one's global identity development, as
many individuals possess countless identities and mood can significantly affect one's response to the test items. As with any generalization, one must
be cautious in its interpretation.
Self–esteem appears to be similar to gay identity, in that it is difficult to capture its true effect on an individual's health, although there is an exorbitant
amount of literature that supports its protective properties (Henley, 2010). In this study, self–esteem

Society is made up of an extremely diverse array of people, ranging in age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and numerous other factors. King

and societies. As an empirical measure, diversity is neither a positive or negative attribute" (p. 5). Canada is made up of a variety of minorities, but
since the queer community is a "non–visible" minorities, there is very little research on the number of individuals who identify with this community,

The LGTBQ+ community are faced with homophobia, discrimination, and increased victimization; social movements have led to the adaptation of

Definition
The LGBTQ+ community faces various internal and external issues. The acronym for their community is joked to be called "alphabet soup", but each
letter in the acronym represents a unique group of people. Dr. J Henderson, a professor at Mount Royal University, breaks down the acronym to
include those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, and the "plus" aiming to include anyone who identifies outside of societal
gender or sexuality norms, such as asexual or pansexual (personal communication, January 11, 2016).
Issues
Everyone is affected by different issues with the justice system, but there are a variety of specific issues that many LGBTQ+ members are faced with
such as homophobia, discrimination, and increased victimization.
Homophobia
The term homophobia was first used in the late 1960's by psychologist George Weinberg to "label heterosexuals ' dread of being in close quarters with
homosexuals as well as homosexuals ' self loathing" (Herek, 2012, para. 2). Homophobia in itself is not always detrimental, but is usually a tool that
fuels discrimination and victimization. Heterosexism. Similar

American Gay Rights
Lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender Americans face many oppressions and do not share the same civil rights as their fellow heterosexual
citizens. In my opinion, your sexual preferences should not dictate your civil rights. Sadly, this is not the case in America. The Declaration of
Independence proclaims that "all men are created equal" with the right to "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness." However, in today's society
homosexual are not giving the same opportunity to achieve their pursuit of happiness. Many LGBT Americans have fought and still fighting for the
rights, safety, and freedom of this country but are still not given the same rights as heterosexual Americans. #2 Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
(LGBT) Americans should have the same rights as heterosexual Americans in all fields including but not limited too aremarriage equality, job security,
and human rights. #3 Since 1970, there have been numerous amount of lawsuits against cities, counties, and state for the denial of marriage.
Throughout history, LGBT citizens have been denied their right to marry clearly due to being the same sex. According to ProCon.org, in 1970 in

Argumentative Essay On Same Sex Marriage
Allowing same–sex marriage to legally occur is currently a major debate within Australia that has a huge presence in our contemporary society.
Same–sex marriage is defined as the union of two individuals of the same gender identity and these couples have experienced discrimination on the
personal and legal level (Rich & Wagner: 2016). Not only does this debate effect the lives of same–sex couples wishing to get married, but all
individuals and groups within the LGBTQIA+ community. A significant issue with this debate are ideas of heteronormativity which seems to be one of
the major underlying arguments against marriage equality. This paper will be defining heteronormativity, the basis of this argument, discussing how
anthropological understandings can be applied and ethnographic examples such as campaigns against marriage equality. Ethnocentrism plays a
substantial role within allowing same–sex marriage under Australian law, as traditionalist views of marriage have overtaken ideas of a change,
however, in modern society the idea of marriage equality is more widespread and accepted. Even with the current plebiscite being conducted there have
been many campaigns against marriage equality that prove how problematic arguments against marriage equality are.
Heteronormativity can be defined that it assumes heterosexuality is the only accepted norm within society and that relationships and/or marriages are
only valid if the two, and only two, individuals are of different sex.

Heterosexism, Racism, and Feminism
Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of being human all through life and includes gender identities, sex, and sexual orientation, roles, eroticism, intimacy,
pleasure, and reproduction (Chapman, 2008). Sexuality is expressed and experienced in thoughts, ideas, fantasies, desires, manners, values, behaviors,
roles, relationships and practices. Though sexuality can encompass all of these aspects, not all of them are for all time experienced or demonstrated
(Hunter, 1992). It is influenced by the interface of biological, social, political, psychological, ethical, economic, cultural, historical, legal, spiritual and

Gender discrimination is a topic that has been debated in our society extensively, through research as well as in informal settings. This has been
beautifully portrayed in this article. The author says that many things are under a process of change, the sphere, the earth, jobs, weather, ranks,
genders, races and sexes. Females are also changing, and therefore feminisms also require changing. Feminism basically is a set of ideologies and
movements intended at establishing, defining, and protective equal economic, political, and social rights for females. It has now gained immense
popularity among women (Smith, 1987). Any women do fight for their rights. The article is also intended for all such active females who are the
strong supporter of feminism. It is also for those audiences who are themselves female and are struggling in their life for their rights and freedom.
The author is of the opinion that females do all form of labor ranging from farming, slavery, domestic, reproductive, affective, waged, etc. All this is
done entirely by females. Even though, females are brutally raped. The rapes are day by day increasing. On the other hand, in country like Brazil,
females are president, and police women. Despite of their active participation and hardship bearing, no one is ready to bring about a change in their
present condition. Feminism requires change.

Gay Rights And Heterosexism
America today has an increase in multiple "isms" ranging from ableism to nativism down to colorism. One "ism" that has been around for some time
but recently has had a spark in society in the past couple of years is heterosexism. Heterosexism is defined as "a prejudiced attitude or discriminatory
practices against homosexuals by heterosexuals" (Dictionary.com). In the 1970s, heterosexism found its way into America's society based on the
protests of many Americans who were against the gay rights activists. After these events, the term was slowly slipping away from society. But then, in
June of 2015 Bruce Jenner came out and said he is a trans–gender woman and that he will be changing his name to Caitlyn. After this event, thousands
of people all came out saying they are trans–gender and that they did not feel comfortable coming out until Bruce Jenner did so. "Forty–two years after
Dr. King was murdered, we are still a nation of inequality. People of color, women, gays, lesbians, and others are still treated as second–class citizens.

Homophobia And Heterosexism
As time has changed, a new wave of discrimination has taken shape in the United States. This new discrimination comes in the form of homophobia
and heterosexism. Walls (2008), suggested that heterosexism, racism, sexism, and class privilege are systems of advantage that provide those with the
"right" sexual orientation, race, gender, and class with opportunities and rewards that are unavailable to other individuals and groups in society.
Homophobia and heterosexism come in various forms that include both overt and subtle forms of discrimination. Choi, et al. (2011) has suggested that
the effects of homophobia and heterosexism are more pronounced in African American communities. Those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or

Lgbt Respectability Essay
In summary, racially marginalized groups define and reinforce respectability through their adherence to the dominant society's cultural norms, values,
and practices, which are defined largely as (white) middle–class standards of living and sexuality in the realms of community and family. These
strategies allow racial minorities to claim their membership in the larger society and at the same time, construct a positive sense of their racialized
selves by minimizing (or simply managing) their stigma as racial subordinates. Further, as these studies show, the exact strategies employed byLGBT
members of each racial minority group may differ, but they all refer to their heterosexual co–ethnics' norms, practices, and behaviors to evince their
conformity and respectability.
LGBT Respectability and Same–Sex Marriage
Sexual minorities also employ respectability politics and discourses to manage their stigmatized statuses in the larger society. Rosenfeld (2009) found

Same–sex marriage has been found to serve as a public recognition and affirmation of one's same–sex desires and sexual minority status (Moore 2011).
However, it defies the assumption of heterosexuality that is required in the public, authority–supported affirmation of one's social sexual identity (Schilt
and Westbrook 2009). Thus, same–sex marriage legalization offers a unique context to explore how social affirmation of (or lack thereof) same–sex
unions and desires may differ according to varying understandings of societal norms and respectability by racial and sexual group membership.

rights and gender roles in society. This particular book is a cultural critique of the United States' gender roles and homophobia. Minor's arguments

Consequently, these factors lead the audience to question his credibility.
In Minor's writing, he is frequently hypocritical. For example, while he claims to strongly advocate equality between the sexes, he speaks nearly
entirely about men's gender roles, only touching on female gender roles. He scarcely even mentions different gender identities besides male and
female. He also always begins speaking about men before women, which several might argue is an illustration of the injustices he is trying to argue
against. Time and again Minor will take up two or three pages speaking about the male point of view on a topic, but only a few paragraphs relating to
the female side. Also, the female side is usually utilized to contrast the male side, rather than any examples of Minor truly writing about as its own
entity. The fact that he speaks only about "men" and "women" shows that he himself may portray an ignorance towards other identities. Additionally,
while Minor constantly pushes for more tolerance for different sexual orientations, his definition of other sexual orientations appears limited to gay
men, completely ignoring an entire spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. In a sense, Minor perpetuates the same gender roles he
argues so strongly against. Minor also uses incredibly vague sources in his writing. One instance of this is seen when he incorporates a strange poem
into his "evidence" (71). This poem

other no matter what happens, whether they get married or not, so trying to stop them from what they want the most, is definitely not going to make
them go away. They will be more outspoken because they want to feel like they are in the United States. People will argue that they shouldn't get
married because marriage is a religious ceremony and should be only for straight people. For example, according to the constitution, marriage doesn't
have to be between a male and a female. I think that people just underestimate homosexuals all the time and that they don't think about their actions and

Heterosexism Pros And Cons
Heterosexism, according to Warren J. Blumenfeld, is the system of advantages given to heterosexuals based on the social construct of gender roles and
heterosexual norms, while marginalizing and oppressing homosexuals and others who do not fit into the heterosexual culture (373). The enforcement
of this system is known as heteronormality. This is seen in the binary system, which is a social construct that divides people into different strictly
bordered categories organized by "social roles, values, stereotypes, and behavioral and attitudinal imperatives, expressions, and expectations"
(Blumenfeld 373). Those who stick to the binary system, maintain power and privilege. People who may live in the binary system, but also intentionally

institutional level. Lastly, homophobia works on a cultural level through the "social norms or codes that ... [are put in place] within a society to

equal house all my life and this has influenced me to be the women I am today and allow me to view people as equal no matter what race, gender, and
sexual orientation. These three reasons are why the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) are not accepted into society, but they should be

One act in particular that President Trump inflicted on the people in the United States was the "Transgender Military Policy." This policy was approved
in late August and will end the recruitment of transgender individuals into the military. President Donald Trump indicates "Our military must be
focused on decisive and over–whelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the
military would entail" (Congressional Digest) President Trump is believes that the transgender military members are a burdened to our forces
because, he does not believe in gay marriage or support the LGBT community as a whole. This also falls into the indication of republicans vs.
democrats. Most republicans do not view gay marriage as equal to straight marriage. Stereotyping in regards to sexual orientation is continuous
situation people in the LGBT community have to face in day to day life. In my life I have always grown up with two grandpas, this is socially
normal to me because, I was raised to love people equal no matter what race gender orientation or sexual orientation. Most gay marriages cannot be
open in public without people making comments about how gross that is or how that is not excepted in today's society. Chimiamanda Adichie

Research Paper On Gay Adoption
Same–sex parents are constantly getting rejected by a variety of adoption agencies because of who they choose to marry. Adopting agencies state that
kids growing up in "that type of environment" would be unhealthy for the development of the child. They fear that the child would end up getting
bullied by their peers, other concerning parents, and by the community which they live on. They also fear that the child will end up making the same
life choices as their parents. Ultimately, same–sex parents should be allowed to adopt for the reasons that: gay parents have the same basic human
rights as everyone else, the child would benefit from growing up in a same–sex home, and it would reduce the amount of orphans that are in need of a
loving family.

Anti Heterosexuality And Its Effects On Society
Those who remain "in the closet" are hiding their internalized feelings from their friends, family, and colleagues, in order to avoid confronting this
socially stigmatized part of their life, along with their own potential denial and self–hatred. Because of the stigmas attached to the LGBTQ community,
one often feels that they have to hide this part of their life in order to maintain social and work relations, with pressure to conform to the heterosexually
dominated culture. This causes internalized confusion because non–heterosexuals are told from society they are abnormal, and thus this can cause a
frightening reality and lead to "internalized oppression" that is the "acceptance of negative social attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes directed towards a
devalued or marginalized group" (186). There is an assumed need to silence those who stray from this dominant culture because of fear that they are
inherently and psychologically impaired, which causes the illusion that those from the LGBTQ community are very limited. Non–heterosexuality was
even identified as a mental illness in the DSM before 1973, referred to as an "interference," and "distress," which only further increases negative ideas
about it (188). These ideas, as well as heteronormative legislation, lead to violence against those of the LGBTQ community in overt and covert forms
by intentional and unintentional heterosexists. This is because of the idea that heterosexualism is the norm and standard, and the belief

Character analysis of Territory by David Leavitt
"Territory" by David Leavitt is a short, yet complexly intimate tail of a mother's futile attempts to accept her son's homosexual identity and his on–going
struggle with internalized homophobia. The story opens with twenty–three year old Neil visiting his mother, Mrs. Campbell, at his childhood home. As
they prepare for the first arrival of Neil's lover, Wayne, the anticipation triggers anxieties both Neil, causing him to have painful flashbacks of the past.
As these images reveal, Neil has lived with feelings of shame, embarrassment and guilt over his sexual identity, as well as an exposure to the impactful
role that his mother has played in his life. We are also made privy to the numerous effects of her emotional detachment, which she... Show more content

Neil's initial move to New York City was based on the city's liberal and tolerant nature of diversity. However, even living in what was considered one
of the most progressive areas of the city, they publicly found themselves ashamed of their identity and uncomfortable to freely express themselves,
falling victims once again to these feelings of internalized homophobia that did not allow them to walk down the street holding hands. According to
Sullivan (2008), same–sex attraction has not always been considered a deviation. However, post–war societal reaction to prohibition, gay bathhouses
and other establishments were adverse and a new war on immorality arose, which was supported by American individuals, religious and governmental
institutions. This outlook prevailed throughout the 1950's and led to blatant anti–gay attitudes. The persecution of the gay life style brought on
renewed shame and guilt for the homosexual community as gay men were forced to cope with the stigmatization by "passing" as heterosexuals and
thus become invisible. This resulted in the development of their own discriminatory social construct, with a hierarchy where males who were able to
prove their masculinity through assimilation were held in the highest regards, while those that did not were looked down upon by their own gay

Gay Rights Australia
MHIS109 Analysis
1)"Gay rights have come a long way, but there's more to do" by Greg Waters, Sydney Morning Herald (2018), outlines a national journey but also
personal journey of the author. Waters highlights how as a nation, Australia has come so far since the 20th century in terms ofgay rights, yet there is
still more work that needs to be done, to ensure all discrimination stops. Waters uses evidence from 1972 to highlight how inhumanely gay people
were treated, including being dismissed from employment for being gay and that protestors against these practices were not looked upon favourably
. In 2018 however, a big win for gay rights was the legalisation of gay marriage in 2017. Yet, he argues there is still so far to go, as in 2018,... Show

Willett argues that the world view has changed, with the help of so many activists, bringing about fundamental changes in society's attitudes. Willett
talks about the changes made up until 1997, however since then attitudes and legislation relating to homosexual people has become even more
understanding and tolerant. In the early 20th century, gay and lesbian people were marginalised to the point of invisibility and demonization . He
argues that before 1975, homosexual laws were some of the harshest laws that the government introduced. This was because there was a general sense
of homophobia after the 1960's, calling homosexual behaviour, sexual depravity. He cites Barry York demanding conjugal rights for prisoners to
prevent prisons from being "breeding grounds" for homosexuality . He also draws on the homosexual attitudes in the paper, such as the Tribune in
1973 which states how John Sendy wanted the government "to oppose gay liberation". However, Willett also uses evidence of people trying to
change this law and fight for gay rights, such as Whitlam in 1970, who expressed support for decriminalisation of homosexual acts, and how in 1972,
Lex Watson set out law reform abolishing all laws regarding discrimination against gay couples and sexual orientation, race and marriage status. He
demanded public education campaign in schools to eradicate anti–gay attitudes. Willett suggests these actions helped to reshape Australian society
creating more understanding. By 1997 there was wider public acceptance and tolerance of homosexual people, with Mardi Gras parade being
popularised, the decriminalisation of male homosexual behaviour, acceptance of lesbians and the recognition of gay custody rights in families and
much stronger anti–discrimination laws, all creating a powerful sense

Ableism And Heterosexism Similarities
How Ableism and Heterosexism Compare
Ableism is discrimination towards individuals who have disabilities. Heterosexism is used as prejudice against homosexuality. Addressing similarities
and differences of ableism and heterosexism in ways such as individuals who are criticized by society, challenges individuals have to face, and
identifying. Differences both isms have are what challenges each ism faces. The similarities of each ism is how they are viewed by society, and
identify ones ism while around others. Tamara Valentine address the similarities and differences about ableism andheterosexism, such as how society
views people with ableism and heterosexism individuals, the challenges that each ism goes through, and ways in which people with isms fight against
others in the book Language and Prejudice.
Ableism individuals are criticized by society such as being in a wheelchair or being a crippled. Nancy Mair states, that "Society is no readier to
accepted crippleness then to accepted death" (231). This is saying that society basically accepts deaths but cannot accepted people who are disabled.
The heterosexism language that is often used is the word "queer" by individuals who have hatred against heterosexism people. Lillian Faderman a
feminist and professor says, "In 1910 the term queer was referred to sexually degenerate towards men or boys" (170). It shows how men who were gay
had always been criticized by our society; however, women were also treated differently if they were a lesbian. Women were insulted by the word
"dyke". It was meant to be used as an "umbrella term towards women who were lesbian"(Faderman 170).
People who had ableism had to face challenges, such as a learning disability, being derogatory, or having a hearing disorder. In the classroom many
students may struggle with a learning disability. It can affect how an individual learns and being able to understand information. When people think
of a disability they may believe it is known as a derogatory rather than a learning or hearing disorder. Some things that derogatory individuals
struggle with can be in ways like not being able to walk, or being in a wheelchair, which can make life difficult and a lot easier to give up on life.

According to the text book Some opponents of gay marriage will claim that sexuality is a matter of choice and that individuals Simply ought to choose
traditional heterosexual relationships. Some proponents of Gay marriage will claim that individuals should be free to choose to marry whomever they
want. Other defenders of gay marriage will argue that since homosexual attraction is not a matter of choice but, rather, a natural disposition over which
individuals have no control, homosexuals should be free to engage in relationships that are natural and rewarding for them. From a consequentialist
point of view, there is nothing in the nature of sex itself that requires that it be heterosexual or for reproductive purposes. In this view, the sexual...

The Reasons behind Homosexual Discrimination
One of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, Dr Seuss, once said, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind". Essentially, this advice is applicable to any given individual, yet it seems that it is most suitable for homosexuals,
and therefore why it lies within the heart of gay rights. It is inevitable, that as a minority group, homosexuals will find that they will encounter more
people who "mind" than heterosexuals. This particular discrimination has been occurring for decades all across the globe; however it became
prominent in the United States in the 1950s. In 1953, under President Eisenhower, it was decided that homosexuality was a sufficient enough reason in
itself to fire people from federal jobs. This executive order stood from 1953 until 1993, providing support to the idea that discrimination in
employment ranked as the worst type of persecution gay people faced at the time, second only to physical assault. Throughout the 1950s and well
into the 1960s, both lesbian and male drag queens suffered from frequent rapes and sexual assaults committed by police officers. Further, those same
police officers were certainly no help when gays were being abused and raped by other hateful individuals. It was not until June 28, 1969 that a group
of gay customers at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village, finally took a stand against the police harassment and created a riot. The

passion if someone tells you it is lame.
Individuals that follow beliefs or desires go on to making world changing movements. For instance, same sex marriage in some parts of the country are
illegal due to discrimination and religion. Many people in the world are bisexual and would love to marry their loved one. In my opinion, standing up

There is many cases in the world where people decide to stay quiet or pretend like something did not happen just because they do not want to be
part of the process. Most of the time when people stay quiet it affects everybody else. Let's say that there were to be a undecided decision on
whether the teacher should buy her students pizza or chips. And, every student voted for pizza, but about half of the class wanted chips instead.
That can affect what the teacher buys the students because what if not everyone wanted the same thing that is why everyone should stand up for
what they want and not stay quiet. My parents are always voting when our city has to vote for a new mayor or our district attorneys, and I always
ask them why they vote every time. They tell me they vote because they believe that one vote can make a difference. They do not want someone that
is not that good of a person to be in charge of the city or town. Everyone has the right to stand up for what they believe in, and more people should

Gay Marriage, By Susie O ' Brien 's Article ' It 's Time...
Susie O'Brien's article 'It's time to honour gay couples and allow them to marry' (The Advertiser, November 20, 2010, p. 27) is an argument that
surrounds the unfair inequality of gay couples and the issue of gay marriage. O'Brien uses argumentative devices such as appeals to pathos, logos,
repetition, rhetorical questions, tone and considered words and concise sentences. These devices provide the audience with a clear direction that
remains focused throughout the entire article. O'Brien begins her argument with a strong paragraph that appeals both to emotion and logic. She
portrays herself as a relatable and average Australian, stating her history at Walford Anglican School, following with its location; Unley. Though this
is a small omission of information, it allows the reader to connect or associate themselves with O'Brien's location and therefore creates an image of
trust within the author. She follows this idea by listing several statements that begin to introduce the idea of logic: "I was always naturally attracted to
the opposite sex. It was never about choice. It is just who I am." These statements are made brief in order to quickly establish a connection with logic
and the reader which is important for the sentence that follows after: "And I couldn't for a moment imagine being discriminated against by the
Government for something out of my control like that." Not only does this set the tone for the overall article but it also places the audience in a

Essay on Theorising Heterosexism for Social Work Education
In the United States and many other countries throughout the world, societal structures have been created to place some in a position of power and
others into oppressed positions. These systems often remain unchallenged and force the oppressed into silence for fear of becoming outcasts. These
systems affect everyone and can even go as far as making the oppressed internally believe that they are supposed to stay in their second class state.
One of these many systems is heterosexism. This paper will cover what heterosexism is, the effects of heterosexism, how heterosexism relates to other
forms of oppression, and what can be done to stop heterosexism from being perpetuated.

Fish (2008) states some of these assumptions such as same sex couples cannot provide the appropriate gender role models, same sex parents will raise
their children to be gay, and children will be bullied because they have parents who are both of the same gender.
Brennan, Craig, and Thompson (2012) state in their study that there is a link between gay and bisexual men's obsession with thinness and muscularity
and internalized homophobia. In their study they linked gay and bisexual men to depression, eating disorders, and internalized homophobia. Their
experiment was based around the theory that people adopt certain characteristics to have access to privileges in a society and be accepted by the
dominant group. Brennan et al.'s (2012) results showed that of the men who showed higher levels of internalized homophobia they also exhibited
higher drives for muscularity. This relates to heterosexism because gay and bisexual men are not considered the "norm." This is why many gay and
bisexual men have this obsession over being thin and muscular, partly because of internalized homophobia. This stems from an overcompensation act
to try and be more masculine in an attempt to balance out their sexual orientation. It relates back to the idea of acceptance. They are consciously or
unconsciously rationalizing that this will make them more accepted whether it is true or not.

doing for many years now. In the "Twilight Saga" some of the characters do not believe that Edward and Bella should be with one another because he

The fact that they thought that this was a mental disorder was very wrong, and it also shows how close–minded people are. Just because one is
different, or loves differently than another person, does not mean that they have a mental illness. If it did, we would be claiming that a lot of people
have mental illnesses. More recently things that have happened for the LGBT community is that on April 1st of 1998, Coretta Scott King who was
formally Martin Luther King Jr.'s wife, now a widow, stood up and called on the civil rights community to help her join the struggle for the LGBT
community ("PBS"). She received lots of criticism for this because she was comparing civil rights to gay rights. The representatives of the black civil
rights movement thought that this was wrong of her ("PBS"). The stance of the African American Community is hard to believe. One would assume
that African Americans might be somewhat more accepting of others considering that they too have gone through the struggle and know what it feels
like to be treated unfairly, but in this case that was not necessarily true.
Finally, in 2008 on May 18th, Massachusetts became the very first state to legalize gay marriage in the United States of America. The court finally was
able to see that denying the LGBT community the right to marry was unconstitutional because it denied people their dignity as well as

Reflective Essay On Heterosexism
Heterosexism is something that I have not realized throughout the majority of my life. To me, it has always been an underlying, but mostly invisible
issue. My viewpoint has radically changed since starting my undergraduate career, and has continued to evolve throughout the following years. These
readings have showcased different aspects that I have not been aware of previously, as will be discussed further below.
Heterosexism is not something that I have extensively thought of before, or really thought about in general other than in passing thought. In my
hometown, heterosexism is something that is apparent to me now that I have realized what it is. There are blatant examples that I was not aware of
growing up, other than casually wondering why one of my female friends was being treated differently than I was. I naively put it down to her being
more of a tomboy than I was, and it did not come to mind to believe that people could be so homophobic to both her, and to a couple other
homosexual individuals that I was aware of growing up. I now understand that homophobia is rampant throughout my hometown, and it is often very
frustrating to me to see individuals being treated differently based on who they are in a relationship with. Even knowing my frustration and the
reasoning behind it, it is difficult for me to speak up against this treatment. I know that this is something that I need to work on, but am unsure of how
to respond to individuals who make those comments.

Heterosexism And Sexism
Sexism and Heterosexism Sexism is a type of discrimination which I feel is such a part of our culture that we often do not even recognize it and it is
widely overlooked. Johnson (2013) suggests "we need to deal with the social roots that generate and nurture the social problems that are reflected in the
behavior of individuals" (p. 335). Unquestionably, it becomes difficult to recognize, and therefore begin to change, that which is the social norm in our
world; and yet, to do nothing perpetuates the problem of a patriarchal culture (Johnson, 2013).
In a patriarchal culture, on group is exercising control over another group, or groups, in an effort to exert domination in all areas (Johnson, 2013). "The

This is to say nothing of attitudes against women when sexism is combined with racism. Based on information presented by Blackmon (2008), South
Carolina governor Cole Blease was quoted as saying "I have...very serious doubt as to whether the crime of rape can be committed against a negro"
(p. 305). According to Katz (2013), it will take not only women activists, but men who are willing to reject the sexist attitudes of the males who have
come before them to eradicate the gender inequality which is commonplace in today's society. Additionally, sex segregation in the workplace deserves
acknowledgement. In the twenty first century, so many advancements have been made for women in this area; and yet, women are still left
disadvantaged in the economic arena (Bernstein, 2013). Bernstein (2013) acknowledges women are still predominantly shouldering the burdens of
raising a family, and even though 15% of women are holding historically male dominated positions, their average yearly–pay with a graduate degree
lags male pay by approximately $35,000 a year. Given the overall acceptance of sexism in our society, women are inundated withfemale ideals of the
perfect woman and body images which set impossible standards. Statistics show exposure to advertisement images have increased over the last 40
years from 500 to 2,000 a day, to being 3,000 to 5,000 daily (Heldman,

Gay Marriage Is The Last Drive For Gay
Gay marriage has been a major social and political issue in America for the past decade. The gay rights movement was believed to have started after
the Stonewall Riots in 1969. It has gained momentum over the past forty years to expand both gay rights and increase greater acceptance to
homosexual relationships. This momentum inevitably resulted in a demand for the rights of gays to marry legally. Today, gaymarriage is the last drive
for gay rights.
The history of the gay rights movement wasn't as publicly known until the Stonewall Riots in 1969. The riots were a sequence of violent protests that

In San Francisco during 1978 Harvey Milk made a difference that would forever change the United States. Harvey was the first openly gay

The White Night Riots happened on May 21, 1979 in San Francisco. The riots were a series of violent events that happened because of the verdict of

Heterosexism In Society
Heterosexism is referred to as prejudice against individuals who engages in homosexual on the assumption that heterosexuality is considered as the
normal sexual orientation (Grundmeier, 1996). It involves a belief that heterosexuality is both a social and cultural standard and a pre–conception that
heterosexuals are socially and culturally of higher–rank compared to bisexual, lesbian, trans–gender and gay.
In LBGTQ community gay people have over a long time been stigmatized because of their homosexual orientations. Acts of homosexuality are
condemned as immoral practices. This group suffers most in the society because of heterosexism, which serves as overarching system of benefits
accorded to heterosexual individuals (Stewart, 2001). There is an institutionalized norm, which perpetuates the idea that all people should be
heterosexual. In the entire society, heterosexuals receive privileges and gay people's needs, life experiences, cultures and concerns are excluded. ...

Negative Effects Of Heterosexism
The ideology of heterosexism can negatively affect heterosexuals and homosexuals in our society. It is a form of social oppression that prevents many
people from revealing their orientation in fear of becoming disparaged and preventing them from expressing their personality as an individual.
A heterosexist is someone who has an attitude, bias, or discrimination in partiality of opposite–sex sexuality and relationships. It can also include
people who have the presumption that every person that they meet is heterosexual or that the only conventional sexuality is that of opposite–sex
attractions and relationships, which is therefore superior in the mind of a heterosexist. This is similar to homophobia, a partisanship against

Which Blumenfeld states "It inhibits one's ability to form close, intimate relationships with members of one's own sex, generally restricts
communication with a significant portion of the population, and, more specifically, limits family relationships", and that societal heterosexism can stop
homosexuals or others of similar sexualities from "... developing an authentic self–identity, and adds to the pressure to marry someone of another sex,
which in turn places undue stress and oftentimes trauma on themselves as well as their spouses and children" (Huffington Post). This can cause many
people to make decisions that they wouldn't have made if they weren't pressured to do it by someone else. Then many of those choices affect others
negatively because they felt they had to prove that they can fit into society's mold. This can make many people feel that they are unimportant and that
they do not matter as not only as a person but as a human being. Kytle states "Our youth need images – images of gay people who are in committed
relationships, who are responsible members of the community, images that promote healthy and responsible choices by gay youth" (120). Without a
responsible and reliable image of homosexuals for today's youth and our society, many individuals that consider themselves gay will feel ashamed and
afraid because they believe that if they reveal their sexuality that they will be disparaged and discriminated against by others of their age group. Since
many people do not have a positive image, many heterosexuals are ignorant of homosexuals and their sexuality, and thus develop a prejudice against
them. This shows that heterosexism impacts many individuals regardless of gender, race, or their orientation, which negatively affects both

Same-Sex Adoption In The United States

  • 1. Same-Sex Adoption In The United States In the past few years, the United States has matured to be more accepting towards its gay and lesbian citizens. The LGBT community slowly becoming represented in society, and gay marriage was recently declared a Constitutionally–guaranteed right in all 50 states. However, there are still many challenges to overcome before equality is guaranteed for all. One of the important rights that gay and lesbian couples have yet to fully attain is the opportunity to apply for an adoption without experiencing harsh criticism from adoption agencies and agency officials, along with encountering the clashing morals from a majority of society. The discrimination faced by homosexual couples in the adoption process is unjust, and the United States should recognize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul Sullins, a Catholic sociology teacher, claimed that children of same–sex couples "were at over twice the risk of depression compared to persons raised by man–woman parents." He also concluded that the children were more likely to be suicidal or have anxiety. These conclusions have been widely used as proof that gay parenting negatively affects children and therefore should not be allowed. But Sullins' reports and the similar claims by homosexual adoption critics can be proven false. In Sullins' specific case, his research was declared as invalid. This study was posted in a journal without any editors to view the material, and the study only used 20 children with no information provided on their background, such as how long they were raised by their homosexual parents (Frank). Not only has the credibility of the study been taken away, but the information presented has conflicted with various national studies. Research from the American Academy of Pediatrics stresses that most children of homosexual parents have seen their biological parents' divorce, so their physiological state must be understood in that context (Perrin). This means that the emotional and mental health issues connected to gay parenting does not necessarily connect to the parenting, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Essay On Heterosexism The politically correct answer on how parents should react if their teenage daughter or son comes out to them is to be understanding. Despite the shock that is felt, responding with love and acceptance rather than rejection lets them know they are valued. Withholding love only hurts everyone involved. You do not have to accept the choice or approve but lettingthe child know he or she is loved unconditionally is important. Now here is the reality. Most parents feel guilt that they did something wrong to make their child this way. Some feelings that might be felt are shock and disbelief. If this is a lifestyle that is not condoned in the household, some parents feel that their understanding is confused as acceptance of this lifestyle. When all the mixed emotions swirling around it can be very difficult to keep a level head. No one wants their child to have to struggle or make themselves a target for others hate. When a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Bible or other religious outlets have stated homosexuality or anything other than heterosexuality is wrong. Like any other many religions some take things out of context and spread the misunderstood as truth. Like most prejudice, fear induces hate. Lack of knowledge of the unknown causes a separation. That separation causes lack of communication. In addition to the religious view, some will claim that their prejudice is valid based on religion. Since most know the Bible states that homosexuality is wrong, religious people hop on the fanatic bandwagon. This can also be said about homosexuality. Mass media has romanticized homosexuality making it hip to be gay, or at least for a girl. Rappers make songs about lesbians and portray lesbians as desirable. Young girls and boys are watching this and see it as a way to be accepted by their peers. It gives them attention even though it is the wrong kind of attention. Negative attention for some is better than no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights She looks into her eyes and smiles, leans in and whispers quietly "I love you" while pulling her in forcefully for an embracing hug. "Are you ready to go" she repeats as she grabs her girlfriends coat and proceeds to the door. Finally, after numerous times of asking, her girlfriend agrees, twists the doorknob and walks out. They have only taken a few steps out of the safety of their own home when the hurtful words start to pour in. Feeling embarrassed, tears start rolling down her face. She immediately turns around and goes back inside. Sadly, this is the reality for many. We live in a world so hateful, that some would rather die than be who they are. A world in which people get belittled for who they love, and have basic rights taken right out of their hands. Gay rights are human rights. No matter who you are as a person, who you love, or who you associate yourself with you deserve to be respected. Gay marriage has no effect on the heterosexual community, civil unions are not the same as marriage, and successful adoptions will happen more frequently. Gay marriage should have no effect on the heterosexual community, something only becomes a problem if other people make it one. The LGBT community would like nothing more than to just be granted the rights that have been morally denied to them. These rights include things as simple as having equal employment. According to Federal Law, gays are not protected against workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in the private workplace. LGBT advocate Jennifer Finney Boylan sees this every day. She witnesses discrimination against gays in the workplace for merly loving someone of the same gender. (Jennifer Finney Boylan. p.19.) Not only are they discriminated in the workplace they also have to deal with these problems in everyday tasks. Cases have been aired about the denial of serving gays in local coffee shops, food chains, and certain stores. This is morally wrong, no one should have to live in fear of the hatred they are going to receive because of who they love. Some may argue that a gay lifestyle undermines traditional values and institutions in this country. Many people hid behind this reason, whereas if they were to look further into this ... • 4. Gay Rights, Gay, Lesbian, And Society Over the past decades, being gay was something no one talked about. It was a subject that was very taboo and society didn't accept. People saw it as a stage one goes through and something unnatural. Thanks to the media, more and more celebrities have come out of the closet over the years. Soon people became accepting of the gay community and their life style. Being openly gay, lesbian, transgender, or bisexual in the workforce can lead to discrimination. Gay mirages are also frowned upon by society. Unfortunately, there aren't many laws that protect gay rights. Everyday in America, gay people are being fired, denied a job, refused promotion, or some other form of discrimination. It's not because they don 't qualify for the job it's because they are gay. 21/50 states in the US have rights set to protect them from facing this discrimination (Eisenberg, Rebecca). 18 out of those 21 states it is illegal to fire transgenders (Eidelson, Josh). So far there are about 28 million workers unemployed because of their sexuality (Bendery, 2014). Pros: 1.Tom Harkin, former Democrat U.S Senate, has a mission to pass a Paycheck Fairness Act, Fair Pay Act, and an Equal Pay Act. Harkin had expressed his views on the issue on last years Equal Pay Day. He felt that there is a big pay gap between men and women. Women are paid less then men simply because of their gender. Even though the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 (Harkin, 2014), people are not following the act. By passing the Paycheck ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Final Paper: Gay Marriage And Religious Freedom Final Paper: Gay Marriage A hot topic in American politics today is the question of civil rights. While a civil right is defined as an enforceable right or privilege, people still have trouble agreeing what should be counted as a civil right. In a recent event, two civil rights that come into contention with each other were gay marriage and religious freedom. A prime example of the conflict was the case of Kim Davis, who denied same–sex couples marriage licenses based on religious freedom. The case showed us that a civil right needs to have limitations so as to not infringe on other constitutional civil rights. In other words, the state should not allow religious freedom to hinder marriage equality. This is what we will examine throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Heterosexism Definition Every day as a society, we come across some kind of discrimination or prejudice against others or towards us. One specific discrimination we come across is heterosexism. Although there are laws and rights that protect us from these kinds of discriminations/prejudices, it still occurs on a daily basis. The definitions of heterosexism vary from text to text, but we find it true that people in heterosexual relationships have more privileges than people who are in same sex relationships. In comparison to two other definitions of heterosexism, my textbook definition says, "Heterosexism describes an ideological system that denies, denigrates, and stigmatizes any nonheterosexual form of behavior, identity, relationship, or community" (Whitley... Heterosexuality privileges includes having positive media images of people of your sexual orientation; not having to lie about who you are, what you do and where you go, not having to worry about losing your job because of your sexual orientation; receiving validation from your religious community; being able to adopt children; and being able to join Boy Scouts or openly serving in the military. Being LGBT is the inferior group who is negatively affected. . Usually nonheterosexual relationships in a family setting is thought to be emotionally inadequate for children. One advantage of nonheterosexual groups is that they have their own community where they can support each other, like gay pride marches. Another advantage is that they tend to see each other as equals in same sex relationships. Also in most same sex relationships, both are employed, unlike most heterosexual stay at home ... • 7. Persuasive Essay On LGBT Rights The LGBT community has made progress towards gaining more rights in recent years, although it has been an uphill battle. In the past year alone LGBT marriage has been legalized in Australia, Malta, and Germany, with the legalization of LGBT marriage in the U.S. in 2015 also being a resounding success. In addition, LGBT rights have also become a greater discussion topic in households, radio shows, and broadcasts around the world. However, while a lot of progress has been made, LGBT individuals and their allies are still struggling for the basic human rights they deserve. Discrimination feels like a relic of the past––something Americans struggled against and that was outlawed in the 1960s. But this was not the case for LGBT individuals. Today, in America, land of the free and the home of the brave, a lesbian can be fired simply for beinggay. A gay couple can be refused a wedding cake for the most important day in their life. A gay couple could be refused their right to adopt a child. Much of this discrimination is chalked up to a concept called "religious freedom." Religious freedom is the right to deny service based on the idea that it conflicts with the business owner's religious beliefs, and has been used most recently to defend discrimination against LGBT people. The world has heard this argument many times before. According to the LA Times, "1960s...a small chain of barbecue restaurants in South Carolina, said that its owner's freedom of religion would be violated if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Identity Development Model for LGBT Population Cass (1979) introduced, what is still today, the most widely used identity development model for the LGBT population. It was thought that gay identity development would serve as the most significant moderator of the physiological stress response. Findings from this study suggest that it affects the stress response, but not to the degree that was expected. It is possible that a Gay Identity Questionnaire (GIQ) will not accurately capture the gay identity development, or that the homogeneity of the sample might not produce statistically significant results. However, as one of the post–hoc analyses self–esteem could account for more of the variance in the stress response. It is not to suggest that gay identity development is not an important construct to understand, but perhaps it could be captured more accurately. Mohr and Fassinger (2000) identified the many dimensions to the gay and lesbian experience. It might be that this current study could support the difficulty in quantitatively measuring one's global identity development, as many individuals possess countless identities and mood can significantly affect one's response to the test items. As with any generalization, one must be cautious in its interpretation. Self–esteem appears to be similar to gay identity, in that it is difficult to capture its true effect on an individual's health, although there is an exorbitant amount of literature that supports its protective properties (Henley, 2010). In this study, self–esteem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Queer Community Is Made Up Of An Very Diverse Array Of... Society is made up of an extremely diverse array of people, ranging in age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and numerous other factors. King & Winterdyk (2010) define diversity as "the degree of socially meaningful differences among and between individuals, groups, communities, culture, and societies. As an empirical measure, diversity is neither a positive or negative attribute" (p. 5). Canada is made up of a variety of minorities, but since the queer community is a "non–visible" minorities, there is very little research on the number of individuals who identify with this community, the demographic distribution, the degree of discrimination, the rate of victimization, and criminality among the group (p. 166–167). A study... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The LGTBQ+ community are faced with homophobia, discrimination, and increased victimization; social movements have led to the adaptation of Canadian legislation and the creation of specialized police units in order to recognize and accommodate the unique needs of the queer community. Definition The LGBTQ+ community faces various internal and external issues. The acronym for their community is joked to be called "alphabet soup", but each letter in the acronym represents a unique group of people. Dr. J Henderson, a professor at Mount Royal University, breaks down the acronym to include those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer, and the "plus" aiming to include anyone who identifies outside of societal gender or sexuality norms, such as asexual or pansexual (personal communication, January 11, 2016). Issues Everyone is affected by different issues with the justice system, but there are a variety of specific issues that many LGBTQ+ members are faced with such as homophobia, discrimination, and increased victimization. Homophobia The term homophobia was first used in the late 1960's by psychologist George Weinberg to "label heterosexuals ' dread of being in close quarters with homosexuals as well as homosexuals ' self loathing" (Herek, 2012, para. 2). Homophobia in itself is not always detrimental, but is usually a tool that fuels discrimination and victimization. Heterosexism. Similar ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. American Gay Rights Lesbians, gays, bisexual, and transgender Americans face many oppressions and do not share the same civil rights as their fellow heterosexual citizens. In my opinion, your sexual preferences should not dictate your civil rights. Sadly, this is not the case in America. The Declaration of Independence proclaims that "all men are created equal" with the right to "life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness." However, in today's society homosexual are not giving the same opportunity to achieve their pursuit of happiness. Many LGBT Americans have fought and still fighting for the rights, safety, and freedom of this country but are still not given the same rights as heterosexual Americans. #2 Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Americans should have the same rights as heterosexual Americans in all fields including but not limited too aremarriage equality, job security, and human rights. #3 Since 1970, there have been numerous amount of lawsuits against cities, counties, and state for the denial of marriage. Throughout history, LGBT citizens have been denied their right to marry clearly due to being the same sex. According to ProCon.org, in 1970 in Minnesota two men, Baker and McConnell, ... • 11. Argumentative Essay On Same Sex Marriage Allowing same–sex marriage to legally occur is currently a major debate within Australia that has a huge presence in our contemporary society. Same–sex marriage is defined as the union of two individuals of the same gender identity and these couples have experienced discrimination on the personal and legal level (Rich & Wagner: 2016). Not only does this debate effect the lives of same–sex couples wishing to get married, but all individuals and groups within the LGBTQIA+ community. A significant issue with this debate are ideas of heteronormativity which seems to be one of the major underlying arguments against marriage equality. This paper will be defining heteronormativity, the basis of this argument, discussing how anthropological understandings can be applied and ethnographic examples such as campaigns against marriage equality. Ethnocentrism plays a substantial role within allowing same–sex marriage under Australian law, as traditionalist views of marriage have overtaken ideas of a change, however, in modern society the idea of marriage equality is more widespread and accepted. Even with the current plebiscite being conducted there have been many campaigns against marriage equality that prove how problematic arguments against marriage equality are. Heteronormativity can be defined that it assumes heterosexuality is the only accepted norm within society and that relationships and/or marriages are only valid if the two, and only two, individuals are of different sex. ... Heterosexism, Racism, and Feminism Heterosexism, Racism, and Feminism Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of being human all through life and includes gender identities, sex, and sexual orientation, roles, eroticism, intimacy, pleasure, and reproduction (Chapman, 2008). Sexuality is expressed and experienced in thoughts, ideas, fantasies, desires, manners, values, behaviors, roles, relationships and practices. Though sexuality can encompass all of these aspects, not all of them are for all time experienced or demonstrated (Hunter, 1992). It is influenced by the interface of biological, social, political, psychological, ethical, economic, cultural, historical, legal, spiritual and religious factors (Simoni & Walters, 2001). There... This has been beautifully portrayed in this article. The author says that many things are under a process of change, the sphere, the earth, jobs, weather, ranks, genders, races and sexes. Females are also changing, and therefore feminisms also require changing. Feminism basically is a set of ideologies and movements intended at establishing, defining, and protective equal economic, political, and social rights for females. It has now gained immense popularity among women (Smith, 1987). Any women do fight for their rights. The article is also intended for all such active females who are the strong supporter of feminism. It is also for those audiences who are themselves female and are struggling in their life for their rights and freedom. The author is of the opinion that females do all form of labor ranging from farming, slavery, domestic, reproductive, affective, waged, etc. All this is done entirely by females. • 13. Gay Rights And Heterosexism America today has an increase in multiple "isms" ranging from ableism to nativism down to colorism. One "ism" that has been around for some time but recently has had a spark in society in the past couple of years is heterosexism. Heterosexism is defined as "a prejudiced attitude or discriminatory practices against homosexuals by heterosexuals" (Dictionary.com). In the 1970s, heterosexism found its way into America's society based on the protests of many Americans who were against the gay rights activists. After these events, the term was slowly slipping away from society. But then, in June of 2015 Bruce Jenner came out and said he is a trans–gender woman and that he will be changing his name to Caitlyn. After this event, thousands of people all came out saying they are trans–gender and that they did not feel comfortable coming out until Bruce Jenner did so. "Forty–two years after Dr. King was murdered, we are still a nation of inequality. People of color, women, gays, lesbians, and others are still treated as second–class citizens. Yes, things have changed but we have still not achieved equality among all humans. And nonhuman animals continue to be chattel property without any inherent value" ("Gary L. Francoine Quotes"). Lgbt Respectability Essay In summary, racially marginalized groups define and reinforce respectability through their adherence to the dominant society's cultural norms, values, and practices, which are defined largely as (white) middle–class standards of living and sexuality in the realms of community and family. These strategies allow racial minorities to claim their membership in the larger society and at the same time, construct a positive sense of their racialized selves by minimizing (or simply managing) their stigma as racial subordinates. Further, as these studies show, the exact strategies employed byLGBT members of each racial minority group may differ, but they all refer to their heterosexual co–ethnics' norms, practices, and behaviors to evince their conformity and respectability. This particular book is a cultural critique of the United States' gender roles and homophobia. Minor's arguments leave a weak impression and leave readers with a sense of confusion. In Minor's writing, he is frequently hypocritical. For example, while he claims to strongly advocate equality between the sexes, he speaks nearly entirely about men's gender roles, only touching on female gender roles. He scarcely even mentions different gender identities besides male and female. He also always begins speaking about men before women, which several might argue is an illustration of the injustices he is trying to argue against. Time and again Minor will take up two or three pages speaking about the male point of view on a topic, but only a few paragraphs relating to the female side. Also, the female side is usually utilized to contrast the male side, rather than any examples of Minor truly writing about as its own entity. The fact that he speaks only about "men" and "women" shows that he himself may portray an ignorance towards other identities. Additionally, while Minor constantly pushes for more tolerance for different sexual orientations, his definition of other sexual orientations appears limited to gay men, completely ignoring an entire spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities. In a sense, Minor perpetuates the same gender roles he argues so strongly against. Minor also uses incredibly vague sources in his writing. One instance of this is seen when he incorporates a strange poem into his "evidence" (71). This poem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The enforcement of this system is known as heteronormality. This is seen in the binary system, which is a social construct that divides people into different strictly bordered categories organized by "social roles, values, stereotypes, and behavioral and attitudinal imperatives, expressions, and expectations" (Blumenfeld 373). • 23. Anti Heterosexuality And Its Effects On Society Those who remain "in the closet" are hiding their internalized feelings from their friends, family, and colleagues, in order to avoid confronting this socially stigmatized part of their life, along with their own potential denial and self–hatred. Because of the stigmas attached to the LGBTQ community, one often feels that they have to hide this part of their life in order to maintain social and work relations, with pressure to conform to the heterosexually dominated culture. This causes internalized confusion because non–heterosexuals are told from society they are abnormal, and thus this can cause a frightening reality and lead to "internalized oppression" that is the "acceptance of negative social attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes directed towards a devalued or marginalized group" (186). There is an assumed need to silence those who stray from this dominant culture because of fear that they are inherently and psychologically impaired, which causes the illusion that those from the LGBTQ community are very limited. Non–heterosexuality was even identified as a mental illness in the DSM before 1973, referred to as an "interference," and "distress," which only further increases negative ideas about it (188). These ideas, as well as heteronormative legislation, lead to violence against those of the LGBTQ community in overt and covert forms by intentional and unintentional heterosexists. However, post–war societal reaction to prohibition, gay bathhouses and other establishments were adverse and a new war on immorality arose, which was supported by American individuals, religious and governmental institutions. This outlook prevailed throughout the 1950's and led to blatant anti–gay attitudes. The persecution of the gay life style brought on renewed shame and guilt for the homosexual community as gay men were forced to cope with the stigmatization by "passing" as heterosexuals and thus become invisible. Willett argues that the world view has changed, with the help of so many activists, bringing about fundamental changes in society's attitudes. Willett talks about the changes made up until 1997, however since then attitudes and legislation relating to homosexual people has become even more understanding and tolerant. In the early 20th century, gay and lesbian people were marginalised to the point of invisibility and demonization . He argues that before 1975, homosexual laws were some of the harshest laws that the government introduced. This was because there was a general sense of homophobia after the 1960's, calling homosexual behaviour, sexual depravity. He cites Barry York demanding conjugal rights for prisoners to prevent prisons from being "breeding grounds" for homosexuality . He also draws on the homosexual attitudes in the paper, such as the Tribune in 1973 which states how John Sendy wanted the government "to oppose gay liberation". However, Willett also uses evidence of people trying to change this law and fight for gay rights, such as Whitlam in 1970, who expressed support for decriminalisation of homosexual acts, and how in 1972, Lex Watson set out law reform abolishing all laws regarding discrimination against gay couples and sexual orientation, race and marriage status. He demanded public education campaign in schools to eradicate anti–gay attitudes. Willett suggests these actions helped to reshape Australian society creating more understanding. By 1997 there was wider public acceptance and tolerance of homosexual people, with Mardi Gras parade being popularised, the decriminalisation of male homosexual behaviour, acceptance of lesbians and the recognition of gay custody rights in families and much stronger anti–discrimination laws, all creating a powerful sense ... Heterosexism is used as prejudice against homosexuality. Addressing similarities and differences of ableism and heterosexism in ways such as individuals who are criticized by society, challenges individuals have to face, and identifying. Differences both isms have are what challenges each ism faces. The similarities of each ism is how they are viewed by society, and identify ones ism while around others. Tamara Valentine address the similarities and differences about ableism andheterosexism, such as how society views people with ableism and heterosexism individuals, the challenges that each ism goes through, and ways in which people with isms fight against others in the book Language and Prejudice. Ableism individuals are criticized by society such as being in a wheelchair or being a crippled. Nancy Mair states, that "Society is no readier to accepted crippleness then to accepted death" (231). This is saying that society basically accepts deaths but cannot accepted people who are disabled. The heterosexism language that is often used is the word "queer" by individuals who have hatred against heterosexism people. Lillian Faderman a feminist and professor says, "In 1910 the term queer was referred to sexually degenerate towards men or boys" (170). It shows how men who were gay had always been criticized by our society; however, women were also treated differently if they were a lesbian. Women were insulted by the word "dyke". It was meant to be used as an "umbrella term towards women who were lesbian"(Faderman 170). People who had ableism had to face challenges, such as a learning disability, being derogatory, or having a hearing disorder. In the classroom many students may struggle with a learning disability. It can affect how an individual learns and being able to understand information. When people think of a disability they may believe it is known as a derogatory rather than a learning or hearing disorder. Some things that derogatory individuals struggle with can be in ways like not being able to walk, or being in a wheelchair, which can make life difficult and a lot easier to give up on life. ... • 28. The Reasons behind Homosexual Discrimination One of the greatest poets of the twentieth century, Dr Seuss, once said, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind". Essentially, this advice is applicable to any given individual, yet it seems that it is most suitable for homosexuals, and therefore why it lies within the heart of gay rights. It is inevitable, that as a minority group, homosexuals will find that they will encounter more people who "mind" than heterosexuals. This particular discrimination has been occurring for decades all across the globe; however it became prominent in the United States in the 1950s. In 1953, under President Eisenhower, it was decided that homosexuality was a sufficient enough reason in itself to fire people from federal jobs. This executive order stood from 1953 until 1993, providing support to the idea that discrimination in employment ranked as the worst type of persecution gay people faced at the time, second only to physical assault. Throughout the 1950s and well into the 1960s, both lesbian and male drag queens suffered from frequent rapes and sexual assaults committed by police officers. Further, those same police officers were certainly no help when gays were being abused and raped by other hateful individuals. It was not until June 28, 1969 that a group of gay customers at the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in Greenwich Village, finally took a stand against the police harassment and created a riot. Though this is a small omission of information, it allows the reader to connect or associate themselves with O'Brien's location and therefore creates an image of trust within the author. She follows this idea by listing several statements that begin to introduce the idea of logic: "I was always naturally attracted to the opposite sex. It was never about choice. It is just who I am." These statements are made brief in order to quickly establish a connection with logic and the reader which is important for the sentence that follows after: "And I couldn't for a moment imagine being discriminated against by the Government for something out of my control like that." Not only does this set the tone for the overall article but it also places the audience in a position of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Essay on Theorising Heterosexism for Social Work Education In the United States and many other countries throughout the world, societal structures have been created to place some in a position of power and others into oppressed positions. These systems often remain unchallenged and force the oppressed into silence for fear of becoming outcasts. These systems affect everyone and can even go as far as making the oppressed internally believe that they are supposed to stay in their second class state. One of these many systems is heterosexism. This paper will cover what heterosexism is, the effects of heterosexism, how heterosexism relates to other forms of oppression, and what can be done to stop heterosexism from being perpetuated. Julie Fish (2008) defines heterosexism, in her article, as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fish (2008) states some of these assumptions such as same sex couples cannot provide the appropriate gender role models, same sex parents will raise their children to be gay, and children will be bullied because they have parents who are both of the same gender. Brennan, Craig, and Thompson (2012) state in their study that there is a link between gay and bisexual men's obsession with thinness and muscularity and internalized homophobia. In their study they linked gay and bisexual men to depression, eating disorders, and internalized homophobia. Their experiment was based around the theory that people adopt certain characteristics to have access to privileges in a society and be accepted by the dominant group. Brennan et al.'s (2012) results showed that of the men who showed higher levels of internalized homophobia they also exhibited higher drives for muscularity. This relates to heterosexism because gay and bisexual men are not considered the "norm." This is why many gay and bisexual men have this obsession over being thin and muscular, partly because of internalized homophobia. This stems from an overcompensation act to try and be more masculine in an attempt to balance out their sexual orientation. It relates back to the idea of acceptance. They are consciously or unconsciously rationalizing that this will make them more accepted whether it is true or not. Olivia Murray (2011) talks about the need for more ... • 33. The Struggle Of Gay Rights The struggle between Edward and Bella in the "Twilight Saga" can be closely related to the struggle of gay right's in today's society. During the whole entire saga Edward and Bella have to fight to keep their relationship with one another. This is similar to what the LGBT community has been doing for many years now. In the "Twilight Saga" some of the characters do not believe that Edward and Bella should be with one another because he is a vampire and she is a human. Similarly in today's society some people do not believe that people of the same–sex should be in a relationship or marry one another. The biggest factor that plays into why people believe and think this way is because of the unknown factor of it all, they have it very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fact that they thought that this was a mental disorder was very wrong, and it also shows how close–minded people are. Just because one is different, or loves differently than another person, does not mean that they have a mental illness. If it did, we would be claiming that a lot of people have mental illnesses. More recently things that have happened for the LGBT community is that on April 1st of 1998, Coretta Scott King who was formally Martin Luther King Jr.'s wife, now a widow, stood up and called on the civil rights community to help her join the struggle for the LGBT community ("PBS"). She received lots of criticism for this because she was comparing civil rights to gay rights. The representatives of the black civil rights movement thought that this was wrong of her ("PBS"). The stance of the African American Community is hard to believe. One would assume that African Americans might be somewhat more accepting of others considering that they too have gone through the struggle and know what it feels like to be treated unfairly, but in this case that was not necessarily true. Finally, in 2008 on May 18th, Massachusetts became the very first state to legalize gay marriage in the United States of America. The court finally was able to see that denying the LGBT community the right to marry was unconstitutional because it denied people their dignity as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Reflective Essay On Heterosexism Heterosexism is something that I have not realized throughout the majority of my life. To me, it has always been an underlying, but mostly invisible issue. My viewpoint has radically changed since starting my undergraduate career, and has continued to evolve throughout the following years. These readings have showcased different aspects that I have not been aware of previously, as will be discussed further below. Heterosexism is not something that I have extensively thought of before, or really thought about in general other than in passing thought. In my hometown, heterosexism is something that is apparent to me now that I have realized what it is. There are blatant examples that I was not aware of growing up, other than casually wondering why one of my female friends was being treated differently than I was. I naively put it down to her being more of a tomboy than I was, and it did not come to mind to believe that people could be so homophobic to both her, and to a couple other homosexual individuals that I was aware of growing up. I now understand that homophobia is rampant throughout my hometown, and it is often very frustrating to me to see individuals being treated differently based on who they are in a relationship with. Even knowing my frustration and the reasoning behind it, it is difficult for me to speak up against this treatment. I know that this is something that I need to work on, but am unsure of how to respond to individuals who make those comments. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Heterosexism And Sexism Sexism and Heterosexism Sexism is a type of discrimination which I feel is such a part of our culture that we often do not even recognize it and it is widely overlooked. Johnson (2013) suggests "we need to deal with the social roots that generate and nurture the social problems that are reflected in the behavior of individuals" (p. 335). Unquestionably, it becomes difficult to recognize, and therefore begin to change, that which is the social norm in our world; and yet, to do nothing perpetuates the problem of a patriarchal culture (Johnson, 2013). In a patriarchal culture, on group is exercising control over another group, or groups, in an effort to exert domination in all areas (Johnson, 2013). "The symbols and ideas that make up patriarchal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is to say nothing of attitudes against women when sexism is combined with racism. Based on information presented by Blackmon (2008), South Carolina governor Cole Blease was quoted as saying "I have...very serious doubt as to whether the crime of rape can be committed against a negro" (p. 305). According to Katz (2013), it will take not only women activists, but men who are willing to reject the sexist attitudes of the males who have come before them to eradicate the gender inequality which is commonplace in today's society. Additionally, sex segregation in the workplace deserves acknowledgement. In the twenty first century, so many advancements have been made for women in this area; and yet, women are still left disadvantaged in the economic arena (Bernstein, 2013). Bernstein (2013) acknowledges women are still predominantly shouldering the burdens of raising a family, and even though 15% of women are holding historically male dominated positions, their average yearly–pay with a graduate degree lags male pay by approximately $35,000 a year. Given the overall acceptance of sexism in our society, women are inundated withfemale ideals of the perfect woman and body images which set impossible standards. Statistics show exposure to advertisement images have increased over the last 40 years from 500 to 2,000 a day, to being 3,000 to 5,000 daily (Heldman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Conservative Grandfather Interview Interview: Conservative Grandfather, Liberal Father I interviewed my grandfather, a NAACP, 79 year old, Baptist born, Christian pastor who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When I asked him if he approved of same–sex marriage, he said, "No, it is an abomination. Why would God create one male and one female if gay couples were supposed to exist?" He also said, "Where in the Bible, God's word, does it say that gay marriage is okay?" My grandfather did say that he does approve of equal marriage rights for everyone. He does not believe gay people should marry in the first place, but they should have equal rights when it comes to jobs and health care. He remembers being a strong supporter of the Prop 8, but he says, "Now that society is progressing, everyone should have equal rights. We are all humans." • 37. Gay Marriage Is The Last Drive For Gay Gay marriage has been a major social and political issue in America for the past decade. The gay rights movement was believed to have started after the Stonewall Riots in 1969. It has gained momentum over the past forty years to expand both gay rights and increase greater acceptance to homosexual relationships. This momentum inevitably resulted in a demand for the rights of gays to marry legally. Today, gaymarriage is the last drive for gay rights. The history of the gay rights movement wasn't as publicly known until the Stonewall Riots in 1969. The riots were a sequence of violent protests that were committed by the gay community. The riots started an entirely new outlook on gay rights. In San Francisco during 1978 Harvey Milk made a difference that would forever change the United States. Harvey was the first openly gay government worker that the United States had. He was elected city commissioner in 1970 and he served only 11 months in office. Before Harvey was assassinated he passed a bill that outlawed sexual orientation discrimination. Dan White was the man who assassinated Harvey Milk and Mayor Moscone. Although Harvey Milk's time in office was extremely short–lived he was one of the few people who wanted to publicly make a difference for other people who were just like him. The White Night Riots happened on May 21, 1979 in San Francisco. The riots were a series of violent events that happened because of the verdict of Dan Whites conviction. Dan White was the man the assassinated Mayor Moscone and Harvey White. White had been convicted of voluntary manslaughter, the lightest possible conviction over first–degree murder. It outraged the gay community so much that it set off the most violent reaction sine the Stonewall Riots. The gay community refused to apologize for their actions during White Night Riots. This increased the political power in the gay community. In November Dianne Feinstein was elected Mayor and she had made a promise to appoint a pro–gay Chief of Police. • 38. Heterosexism In Society Heterosexism is referred to as prejudice against individuals who engages in homosexual on the assumption that heterosexuality is considered as the normal sexual orientation (Grundmeier, 1996). It involves a belief that heterosexuality is both a social and cultural standard and a pre–conception that heterosexuals are socially and culturally of higher–rank compared to bisexual, lesbian, trans–gender and gay. In LBGTQ community gay people have over a long time been stigmatized because of their homosexual orientations. Acts of homosexuality are condemned as immoral practices. This group suffers most in the society because of heterosexism, which serves as overarching system of benefits accorded to heterosexual individuals (Stewart, 2001). • 39. Negative Effects Of Heterosexism The ideology of heterosexism can negatively affect heterosexuals and homosexuals in our society. It is a form of social oppression that prevents many people from revealing their orientation in fear of becoming disparaged and preventing them from expressing their personality as an individual. A heterosexist is someone who has an attitude, bias, or discrimination in partiality of opposite–sex sexuality and relationships. It can also include people who have the presumption that every person that they meet is heterosexual or that the only conventional sexuality is that of opposite–sex attractions and relationships, which is therefore superior in the mind of a heterosexist. Which Blumenfeld states "It inhibits one's ability to form close, intimate relationships with members of one's own sex, generally restricts communication with a significant portion of the population, and, more specifically, limits family relationships", and that societal heterosexism can stop homosexuals or others of similar sexualities from "... developing an authentic self–identity, and adds to the pressure to marry someone of another sex, which in turn places undue stress and oftentimes trauma on themselves as well as their spouses and children" (Huffington Post). This can cause many people to make decisions that they wouldn't have made if they weren't pressured to do it by someone else. Then many of those choices affect others negatively because they felt they had to prove that they can fit into society's mold. This can make many people feel that they are unimportant and that they do not matter as not only as a person but as a human being. Kytle states "Our youth need images – images of gay people who are in committed relationships, who are responsible members of the community, images that promote healthy and responsible choices by gay youth" (120). Without a responsible and reliable image of homosexuals for today's youth and our society, many individuals that consider themselves gay will feel ashamed and afraid because they believe that if they reveal their sexuality that they will be disparaged and discriminated against by others of their age group. Since many people do not have a positive image, many heterosexuals are ignorant of homosexuals and their sexuality, and thus develop a prejudice against them.
