At OHSU's Bone Marrow Transplant unit (BMT) and at the outpatient center for Hematologic
Malignancies (CHM) clinic, BMT patients are not fitted for N95 masks, yet they are being asked to

beneficial than surgical masks for the patients. This is because we are asking them to be worn while

What are masks? One usually thinks it is an object the individual puts on and takes off.
When given the thought, one makes the comparison that masks are used to describe our
personalities. In "In Defense of Masks" by Kenneth Gergen, he describes the conclusions of other
psychologists that one needs to live with a "coherent sense of identity"(Gergen, 198). In other
words, they have deduced that one should develop a consistent sense of self to which they can
always be true to. Gergen's research has led him to believe those assumptions are false. He doubts
the idea of a "coherent sense of identity" because individuals will acquire emotional distress. Gergen
claims that we cannot have a self to be true to at all time since we have multiple masks. All the mask
that one possesses changes their behavior and in turn, adds to their personality. Likewise, our masks

"One Self or Many Selves" givens a claim that: "In sort, change the situation and you change my
behavior and thus I enter into a different self–state (para 11). He explains himself being

Mask Explanation and/or Reflection There are multiple different symbols and hidden meanings on
my mask. These symbols mainly have to do with events from the past and my current state in the
present. When one looks upon the mask, the first thing they may notice is the black line going down
the middle, separating the past from present. Another good distinction between the past and present

They eye has a blue and yellow outline, which yield a very pleasing, bright color combination. They
eyebrow is slanted up to portray a happier, more relaxed look. The red plus represents the medical

When making my mask, I wanted to create one that oozed authority with a hint of smarminess. I was
ultimately surprised by the outcome, my end product was a trickster. The raised eyebrow however
led to a smirk which ultimately led to the name Draco; a genus of reptiles, very apt for my character.
However, the eviller Draco became the more drastic a counter mask had to be. As our piece was
dedicated to stealing a picture of ''Zefron– Zac Efron", when ripped, Draco had to flip suddenly.
I drew upon the counter mask exercises we had developed in rehearsals. Changing everything that
made Draco who he was. His ever–present sneer faded into a frown and a wail.
To achieve Draco's mannerism and voice I charged my mask. Copying the arched eyebrow on the
mask I found a nasally voice with an added scoff at the end. I then began to work on my inner
dramatic monologue.
I wanted to keep in mind that Draco thought himself above everyone else hence a simple inner
monologue; "I am surrounded by idiots...peasants, they should be quivering in my mere presence."
Getting the temperament of Draco however was difficult. Despite embodying the arlecchino mask I
wanted Draco to keep an air of authority, the temperament I chose for Draco was Choleric "This
way follow me, follow me this way now!".
All the exercises and techniques I used to develop Draco greatly helped me in perfecting his
character, from Lecoq's 7 states to chekov's centres.

objects can include elaborately carved stools and chairs used as thrones. Most of the sculptures are

implements sculpted to celebrate the court. Chokwe origin can perhaps be traced to the Mbuti and
Pygmies. Between 1600 and 1850 they were under extensive influence from the Lunda states and
were centrally located in Angola. In the second half of the 19th century though, substantial
improvement of the trade routes between the Chokwe homelands and the Angolan coast led to
increased trade of ivory and rubber. Wealth acquired from this allowed the Chokwe kingdom to
develop, eventually overtaking the Lunda states that had held sway over them for so long. Their

My mask features materials such as white tissue paper, pearl balls, silver glitter, sparkly paper, silver
flowers and silver pen. These materials were used on my mask to give it a bright and pure white

Life is a costume party in which some are tricked and others are treated. Imagine a world where
one's true self was hidden behind a series of masks, each mask hiding an individual's specific
character flaw, personality trait or even a desire to do harm. Against the backdrop of World War II,
uniformed soldiers presented themselves to an enemy as a single mass of camouflaged danger. Each
similarly dressed and trained to kill or capture an enemy without feeling any remorse. William
Golding's own involvement during World War II allowed him to experience wearing his own mask
while tremendous violence was occurring as he was aboard a Royal Navy boat in 1940. Further, his

of both anger and sadness in his poem, makes it notable that he is also an African–American who

Masks are used in society to conceal one's appearance and also as a means for impersonation. When
we encounter someone wearing a mask, we assume they are pretending to be whatever that mask
depicts. We are aware that there is a person underneath, but we assume that they bear no
resemblance to the mask they wear. If they were, then why would they were a mask in the first
place? In graphic novel MAUS II, Art Spiegelman tells the story of his father's experiences within
the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz (1992). There are many visual themes or motifs present

In these scenes, we again see the mask motif being depicted by Spiegelman. In an earlier scene, Art
is shown morphing his character from an adult to a childlike version of himself (42). In society
children are symbols of nativity and immaturity. Conversely, adults are symbols of wisdom and
