Reflection Paper On Practicum
I spent my time doing my practicum at Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City. I worked under Laura
Garret who is the Director of Resident Life. She made sure to assign me to a different area of the
facility every few days. By doing this I was able to experience the Independent Living, Assisted
Living , Nursing Home Department and Epworth at Home Areas. One of the first things that I did
was attend a plan of care meeting for a resident. This deals with going over their medicine, daily
schedule, therapy and general information with the resident and family members. During the
meeting the elderly woman would say rude things to the employees about them. She would then get
sad and immediately apologize and say she was sorry for anything she said. The employees asked
the son if he had noticed any personality changes from his mother and he said yes he had. This
reminds me of when I learned about Alzheimer 's disease and the symptoms that are associated with
it which includes personality changes. Another thing that I did was daily exercise which included
lifting weights, stretching out the upper and lower torso and balancing on one foot. This reminds me
that as we get older are bodies change and having a daily exercise routine can reduce the risk of
being overweight, having heart disease, stroke, arthritis and diabetes. Exercise can also increase a
person's life expectancy. The most common type of exercise is walking and it does not cost

As the older adult population in the United States continues its accelerated growth, there is a
growing concern about the long–term care options for these elders. While nursing homes are no
longer desirable and costly for federal and state governments, viable alternatives are being sought to
meet this need. The development and rapid expansion of the numbers of assisted living communities
have grown as older adults, family caregivers and government bureaucrats are looking for lower
cost options. How beneficial are assisted living communities for the older adults that live in them?
Most older adults seek to avoid multiple moves to meet their care needs and desire to age in place
within a residential setting. The findings of this study conclude that assisted living communities
provide significant benefits to older adults by the provision of supportive services to help in areas of
activities of daily living. There are some assisted living communities that are more able to
accommodate residents to age in place based on the provision of necessary services, highly
personalized service and reasonable accommodations that are needed to help with physical decline.

During the visit to the Mapleshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, I was able to tour the facility
and also meet and speak with employees and patients. When I arrived at the center, my first
interaction was with the assistant director of activities whose name was Madison. Madison has been
officially employed at this facility for two years but has been involved for many years since her
mother is the admissions director at the center. She was able to answer the majority of the questions

America has a highly developed health care system, which is available to all people. Although it can
be very complex and frustrating at times, it has come a long way from the health care organizations
of yesterday. Previously, most health care facilities were a place where the sick were housed and
cared for until death. Physicians rarely practiced in hospitals and only those who were fortunate
could afford proper care at home or in private clinics. Today the level of health care has improved
tremendously. Presently the goal of our health care is to have a continuum of care for the patient,

Assisted Living
Assisted living is an arrangement to residents of a facility that enables them to complete certain
daily activities while remaining independent. The services provided enable the resident to achieve
maximum function of their activities of daily living.
The services are unskilled and non–specialized; personnel provide the activities essential to the care
of the resident. These services help assist the aged, blind, disabled, and other functionally limited
individuals with necessary daily activities for which they require help with or are unable to perform
on their own. Examples of some of the services that may be available are light housekeeping, meal
preparation, medication reminders and personal care. This personal care does not include specific
health oriented services that would require the services of a certified or licensed professional. It is
stated well in Aging "Although the level of services provided may vary, assisted living communities
all share a common goal: enabling people to live as active and independent a life as possible" (p.
212). The goal of an assisted living facility is to have the residents feel independent within their own
home. According to the article Assisted Living's Future In Michigan Debated "Assisted living
facilities can offer consumers a great opportunity to get personalized care in a comfortable setting"

Long Term Care Services Essay
Long–term care service is the system of activities undertaken by informal caregivers (family and
friends) or by formal caregivers (professionals) for persons who are not fully capable of self–care on
a long–term basis [1]. Traditionally, long–term has been provided by the family who serve as
informal caregivers. They perform activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing as well as
instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) such as cooking [2]. Home health care can be
provided by family, nurses or paid helpers for older adults with mild disabilities who live at home.
Compared with facility care, home health care tends to depend more on help from the family in
conjunction with formal services because it is provided at home [3].
Research has shown significant positive evidence on the effects of the presence and characteristics
of a family caregiver on the use of long–term care [4]. Findings showed the elderly who had a
spouse as a caregiver used home healthcare services more often than nursing home services. In fact,
88.3% of older adults who were receiving long–term care services had family caregivers. This is

A dog and a parrot will be bought so Mama can take the responsibility of walking and caring for the
dog and feeding the parrot. This would form part of her regular exercise routine. She loves dogs and
would be excited at having one to care for. Being an avid reader, she will be registered in a senior
book near a local library within 5 minutes walking distance from my apartment. This would offer
her a social atmosphere where can meet new friends as well as keep her mental state healthy. In
addition, she would also be registered at a senior fitness club (especially Yoga which she loves) and
we would both attend weekly church service
