Generals Die In Bed By Charles Yale Harrison
Through the soldiers' experiences, the narrator shows only the dark side of human nature. Discuss.
Generals die in Bed by Charles Yale Harrison is a novel where a young Canadian soldier tells of his
first hand account of the harsh and inhumane conditions in the trenches on the Western Front during
World War 1. Through his observations and experiences the Narrator shows the effects of war on
ordinary people and how they manage in extraordinarily horrific situations. Even though the brutal
nature of the war is often reflected in the violent way that combatants act towards one another there
are also moments when compassion and mercy is shown. The novel demonstrates that in extreme
situations both the dark and the good side of human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However we also are shown bravery, companionship and acts of kindness as the soldiers struggle to
stay humane and sane in a hellish environment.
Throughout the novel they are compassionate and caring to even their enemies in their darkest
moments. They also illustrate the dark and unforgiving side of human nature. They show no pity or
mercy even while being pleaded too.
Throughout the novel the Narrator often shows compassion towards others – in his actions – eg.
letting the German soldier grieve for his dead brother letting him take 'a few letters and papers from
his brother's pockets' and imagines how their mother would feel. He then helps the Germans to
safety behind the lines & asks that 'the prisoners be treated nicely.'
Just like their constant companions the lice and the rats, the soldiers in the trench adapt to the hell
that they find themselves trapped in – doing whatever it takes to survive. They even fight each other
over food 'at each others throats like hungry, snarling animals'. As the novel & the war
progresses so does the inhumane side of the soldiers who become increasing more detached from
killing, unconcerned with the death of friends. The soldiers are conditioned, hardened up and
desensitised with self preservation becoming a key motivator. This is shown as the soldiers plunder
the city of Arras allies ' town and vandalize houses with no consideration of the local

Once An Eagle By Anton Myrer
Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer is a very influential novel in the military. In fact, it is required
reading material for all 1st Lieutenants in the Marine Corps as well as in the United States Military
Academy at West Point. Many Army leaders have read the book and often discuss it among
themselves in social situations. Although a fiction read, many leaders extrapolate the use of mission
command as well as the leaderships attributes. In this analysis I will be comparing a single event in
the novel to the Army's leadership principles as well as Mission Command. I will then provide a
personal reflection and conclude.
Synopsis
The book generally describes the rise in the ranks of the main protagonist, Sam Damon, from an
enlistee, to NCO, to Officer where he eventually reaches the rank of a division commander. The
setting and time changes, beginning in World War I, the years between the two wars, World War II
and finally a fictionalized Vietnam where Damon is an advisor. Throughout the book Damon is able
to rise in the ranks thanks to political connections, audacity, and willingness. Through time Damon
himself changes, becoming more self oriented, and looses some of his purity (for lack of a better
description) as he rises in the ranks.
The event I will be focusing on is during Damon's earlier years, in WWI. At the time Damon is a
NCO and is in charge of a platoon. It is during the middle years of WWI and Damon and his unit are
sent in as a show of support. They are paraded in

Western Front Paul's Transformation
Erich Maria Remarque's page–turning novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, is the greatest war
novel ever written. The novel is narrated Paul Baumer, a 19 year–old German infantryman on the
Western front during the first world war. The novel follows Paul and his fellow comrades
throughout their journey in WW1. The story describes Paul as he goes through the life of a young
German soldier. From meals and shortages to bombings and death, Paul is confronted with constant
and at times extreme austerity throughout the novel. Afflictions, such as the deaths of his friends and
fellow soldiers, plague Paul's expedition throughout the novel. At the end of the book, Paul is also
faced with another affliction in his own impending death and his growing

The War On The Front Lines
"The refusal to obey orders, or a violent attempt to take control from people of authority."1 The
Great War was a rugged time for many throughout its duration from July 28, 1914 to November 11,
1918. The speculations and thoughts of the general public and the soldiers in battle behind the
ongoing war changed drastically over the four years. The moral and willpower of the soldiers
declined heavily, and this had a large impact on how the war was fought. Many soldiers captured
their accounts of these changes in journals as diaries and there is one French soldier's diary that
accurately depicts mutiny on the front lines. There is a clear correlation between the changes in the
amount of recruits and supplies available, the manner in which the war was fought, and the general
feelings behind the war as time went on, which caused some soldiers to choose mutiny. At the
beginning of the war, the duties behind what the soldiers had to do were largely appreciated and they
were held above others as heroes. People of warring countries were rushing to battle and their loved
ones were supporting them all of the way. Battalions were even formed from work groups, as they
already withheld an established chain of command, the members had a close knit bond, and there
was a charismatic feeling about representing the country they worked in. The glorified fighting and
risking of one's life was soon changed.
The way the war was fought also fiercely changed. The battle techniques early on in 1914

Audie Murphy Facts
. Purpose: To provide information about military soldier Audie Murphy and his significant impact on
the military. 2. Facts:
a. Audie Murphy had prior military service experience and advanced through the ranks quickly. He
earned his first military decorations during Operation Dragoon. During that operation, he fought
with courage and valor by ambushing a group of German Soldiers and using their machine guns and
grenades against them. Though he had setbacks during this operation, he continued to have courage,
and because of his efforts, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. During Operation
Dragoon Murphy helped significantly reduce the number of German Soldiers which ultimately made
a large impact on dispelling German operational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many soldiers lost their lives, but they were few soldiers that fought with the valor of Audie
Murphy. In January 1945, German forces attacked Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd infantry division
in Holtzwihr. Approximately 250 German soldiers were heading towards the Bois de Reidwihr
which they had planned to seize. The Americans felt unprepared when they discovered the presence
of the German forces, so they decided to fall back. However, Audie Murphy decided to move
forward and fight. He drew a .50 caliber and started shooting Germans as he believed that German
advancements in this area needed to be stopped at all costs. This German infantryman were as close
as 10 yards from Lieutenant Murphy, but he kept shooting at German infantry bodies. The bravery
Murphy presented at Holtzwihr earned him the medal of honor.
c. Murphy's valor came to a test when his battalion headed to Anzio. The Germans received an
unexpected advantage because of a missed landing of American troops. The Germans moved
125,000 troops to position and attacked allied soldiers with artillery. Their commander got wounded,
but Audie Murphy stepped up to lead his company during the enemies heavy fire. In recognition of
his leadership efforts, Murphy got promoted to platoon leader and later earned a Bronze star in
March 1994 for destroying a German tank on his own. He contributed significantly to several
operations during the war against the

Throughtout History, Illustrations and Paintings Have...
Throughout history, notorious and creative people have used illustrations and paintings to play on
people's emotions. One of the most famous examples of this was during World War I, with the use of
propaganda posters to increase nationalistic feelings towards one's own country. Through the mass
production and creativity of the posters, many young men enlisted in their nation's army to protect
and support their country throughout the war.
This first poster (see Figure 1) was used by Germans during World War I; on the bottom part of the
poster there German writing which translates out to, "It is essential that the last blows achieve
victory! Subscribe to the War Loan!" This is simply saying that, "in order to finish off the war, you

This represents that the very well–dressed man is hiding in the shadows from the war; that he is
trying to hide himself from the war altogether. On the other side of the window, there is light outside
that has several lines of marching soldiers, with the American Flag flying right above them. Having
the American flag flying above these soldiers, gives the sense that they are heroes for going to fight
this war. Having the well–dressed man inside and the marching soldiers outside shows the viewer
that the men who stay home and tremble in fear of the war do not deserve glory. On the other hand
the soldiers that are outside deserve glory.
Finally this last poster (see Figure 3) was used for English propaganda. In the background there is a
burning building and two lines of soldiers. The lines of soldiers could represent two things: one
being that the British army is much smaller compared to Germany's. The second is that in the line of
soldiers, there appears to be a few empty spots which could correlate to the question at the top of the
poster that asks, "WHO'S ABSENT?" and then asks another question at the bottom which is, "Is it
you?" These two questions are directed at British men (usually between the ages of 18

What Differentiates Sfeelou's And Skandalis
One year after the collection of short stories Νιότη χωρίς τραγούδια Sofia Fildisi published the
novel Ο μεγάλος μας αδερφός also set in the period of the Occupation.
Just like in her previous book, in this novel too, the author does not distinguish between Germans
and Nazis and words like 'Nazism', 'Nazis' or 'Third Reich' are nowhere to be found in over one
hundred fifty pages of narrative text. This is of particular importance as Ο μεγάλος μας αδερφός is
the only text published in the first period the metapolitefsi which does mention the existence of Nazi
concentration camps. The reference to the concentration camps, however, is completely
disassociated from its context and the younger reader who lacks the extratextual knowledge is likely

In both books the Germans are portrayed in a neutral way and the words 'soldiers', 'occupiers',
'occupation troops', 'foreigners' and 'enemies' are amongst those employed by the authors to refer to
the Germans. What differentiates Sfaelou's and Skandalis's narratives from those that have talked
about so far, however, is that both writers make use of the term 'Nazis', while in one of Skandalis's
short stories the term 'Third Reich' also comes across. Nonetheless, none of the writers provide any
further explanations, either in the narrative text or in the paratext, which would help the young
reader to put the terms in question into their historical and ideopolitical context. Furthermore, none
of the authors are concerned to distinguish between Germans as a national group and Nazis as a
group of supporters of a certain ideological doctrine and in both texts the word 'Nazi' is used as an
alternative word for 'Germans'. Since no distinctions are made between Germans and Nazis, the
switching between the two words renders them synonymous. In other words, the Germans are
'Nazified' and the Nazis are 'Germanised' while 'Germanness' and 'Nazism' are conflated in the
identity of the enemy with whatever implications this might have to the young reader's
conceptualization of

Two Poem The Dead
When thinking of World War I many different things come to mind. When thinking of the dawn of
the 20th century one thinks of its 19th century legacies like the fin de siècle or the belle époque .
Both of these ideas symbolize how the start of the 20th century meant different things to different
people. The same can be said with the feelings and ideas attached to the great war. The feelings of
war in the United States were much different then what was most likely felt among Europe. Also,
the views of the allied powers were distinct from that of the axis power. However, despite all of
these differences when looking at the collection of Great War Poems we see that for the soldiers it
was all the same. By reading the words of the French, German, ... Show more content on

Even if they survived many of them came home in pieces and maimed. The author talks about the
loss of his leg but then adds how the rats ate his leg and he ate the rats . This shows some of the
atrocities that all of the soldiers had to face during the war. In the end all he got to show for it was
the "Croix de Guerre and a wooden leg." This was the unfortunate reality of many of the soldiers
who were even lucky enough to return from the war.
Another poem about death "The Dead–Beat" talks about death in a straightforward and seemingly
insensitive way. In the opening paragraph the author says that when the soldier dropped it "Lay
stupid like a cod, heavy like meat." This could seem crude to a reader, but this is how things were in
times of war. In order to survive mentally as well as physically these men had to form a sense of
detachment and at times even become inhumane. This crudeness is seen further in the closing line,
"That scum you sent last night soon died.

told from the perspectives of two young girls, who struggle through life as Jews. "The Diary of a
Young Girl" is told from the perspective of Anne Frank and "Summer of My German Soldier" is told
from Patricia Bergen's perspective. Anne and Patricia have many similarities, but they also contrast
in some ways too. My goal is to show how they are similar and how they're also different. "The

Analysis Of Saving Private Ryan
This is where the film, Saving Private Ryan enters the highlight of movie watchers with Tom Hanks
as Captain Miller also lead character in the cast. Captain Miller leads a squad of vivacious soldiers
through blood, sweat, cruelty, and tears. The film brings battles of D–Day on the beach and
afterwards fight from towns to search for Private James Ryan in effect of military post office
sending out service letters to beloved family members to being notified of their loved one's bravery
in action upon their death. The film does over dramatize on the emotional reaction on the General's

Captain Miller told them, "Are we going to leave this bunker to cut down another squad that might
not know about this position?". The squad fell into line of command. However, the film does
deviates from the chain of command structure of where Captain Miller decides to overturn an order
from Master Sergeant giving an order to a Private to take his gun to kill a surrendering Nazi. Tom
Hanks a.k.a. Captain Miller turns the situation to non–belligerence by reminding the squad of their
humanity; then he walks to tends to the dead United State Army soldiers and giving them a proper
burial as the rest of squad joins him in helping. Furthermore, the film reveals embroideries between
facts and exaggerations. The film adheres to the same military tactics of fighting the enemy by
flanking and forward assaults. For example, Captain Miller and his squad found an enemy's bunker
position. Captain Miller drew out a battle of pushing three sides in groups of two. One group up the
middle, second group up the right, and third group up the left assaulting the bunker. They used cover
to lay suppression fire on machine gun nest. When, one group was close enough within throwing
distance for grenades. They would throw grenades to force the enemy out of trench to expose them
to fire. The film is accurate on tactics. On D–Day, the same method was used to advance to cover
within the gun fire of the bunkers. Captain Miller setting up ambush

All Quiet On The Western Front
Paul is German, but he can just as easily be any soldier. To an American reader, Baumer is "the
enemy" since he is a German soldier in WWI. But through the expression of Baumer 's thoughts and
emotions, we quickly realize the commonality between soldiers of both sides, and the pointlessness
of war, with thousands of men dying for nothing.
All Quiet on the Western Front separates the cold sterile facts and figures and gives the reader
insight into the experiences of an ordinary soldier. The author's main theme centers not only on the
loss of innocence by Paul and his soldiers, but the loss of an entire generation. The soldiers of all
nations watched their friends die, starve and lose a part of themselves. Paul's story is universal and
relevant today as was when it was first published.
All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of German soldier, Paul Baumer, who
journals about the brutality and callousness of war. The novel chronicles the demise of Paul and his
classmates from high school graduation and military basic training to the trenches of WWI
battlefields. Paul Baumer, is as an idealistic young poet swept away by the Rhetoric of his teacher
and the misguided patriotism of his peers. He is in many ways just a child that hasn't traveled
beyond his own backyard.
The novel starts off with Kemmerich dying a slow and painful death. Kemmerich owns a nice pair
of boots. Fellow soldier, Muller, want them for himself. He is focused on his own survival,

"From the happy expression on their faces you might have supposed that they welcomed the war. I
have met with men who loved stamps, and stones, and snakes, but I could not imagine any man
loving war." Margot Asquith revealed her discontent with war in this quote. War is defined in the
American Heritage Dictionary as a concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to
something considered injurious. A rather contradicting definition from the dictionary when one
examines war's true meaning and the effect it has on mankind. Wars do not put an end to something
considered injurious, war starts them. War stems from human greed ... Show more content on

But even this maturity could not save him from the jaws of death. Before the war, Paul was a scholar
who had ambitions and hopes for success in life. Unfortunately, war quenched that desire for
success as revealed in the book when he returned home for a short stay. Paul's self confidence and
sense of belonging in society was gone. He no longer shared any interest in his books, felt
melancholic most of the time, and do not have the same outlook towards life as others did. Even
though Paul tried very hard at concealing his inner emotions and to stage a bold front, it is not very
difficult for the reader to see that a psychological battle was taking place inside him. "I ought to
have never come here. Out there I was indifferent and often hopeless–I will never be able to be so
again." Paul reveals that his trip home made him realize the destructive effects war had on his
character and he regretted going home.
Another challenge to Paul's mental strength came when he was in one of the enemy's trenches. In
that trench, Paul came face to face with a French soldier, whom he considered his enemy. It was in
that trench that he found out that French soldiers were just as human as German soldiers. Confusion
struck Paul as he tried to make sense of the common German soldier belief that all French are
animals and should be killed without mercy. For the first time, Paul was overcome by emotions after
killing a helpless French

All Quiet On The Western Front Analysis
The novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque is about a German foot soldier in the
First World War. It is known that World War 1 was really a horrific one as millions were killed on
the battlefield. Though this novel was written in 1928 it really helps people in the 21st century
understand the suffering and pain that the soldiers went through. The protagonist Paul along with his
comrades were put in many unfamiliar situations where they were expected to kill the enemy and
come home unharmed. The theme ; soldiers dehumanize their enemies in war, so they do not
hesitate and get themselves killed, appears many times in the text. This book dwells deep into the
how the soldiers must dehumanize their enemies to kill them with no emotion. It portrays the
horrors of war and how civilians were turned into killing machines to survive. If the soldiers were to
think even for one second their chances of survival went down exponentially.
Throughout the book, Paul and the other German soldiers dehumanize French and Russians. The
Germans are said to turn into "instant human animals" when going to the front (56). When humans
have the feeling of turning into animals, it would be sensible to assume that they believe they are
stooping down to the level of the enemy to hunt them. This also shows the amount of rage the
soldiers have against the opposing side, as it said they turn into animals as the front is approached.
In the English language when figuratively it is said to turn

A Soldier's Dignity In The Life Of A Fallen German Soldier
The thought of being entangled in barbed wire after being shot is an idea that makes me cringe. I
cannot fathom the pain that the soldiers in these situations must have felt, but I can understand the
factors that allowed for their killing. I believe the moral factor most relevant in mercy killing is
dignity. As humans, we offer sympathy for our peers that are suffering. In addition, we help them to
keep their dignity by trying to ease their pains. In the second scenario, the author describes a scene
in which a fallen German soldier screams in pain and calls for his mother throughout the night. It is
understood that the German will not survive as he was stranded, and as members of the same
profession, we should respect the German's dignity by putting him out of his suffering. Considering
that he will not survive, we recognize the pain he feels is unwarranted, so why allow him suffer and
scream? More generally, the purpose of mercy killing is not to commit a malicious act against a
friend or foe, but it is to induce their inevitable death with less suffering. By ending the torment of
those in pain, we are respecting their dignity by not allowing them to experience unnecessary agony.

people are in shock from the pain they are experiencing, and they do not have the ability to say they

themselves. I understand the right of self–determination can be stretched to where a person's desires

Personal Narrative: Death Of A German Soldier
Today, the German soldiers managed to reinforce the military and to foil our offensive. Everything
had gone wrong! Their far greater mobility and firepower allowed for them to turn our attack into
their favor (1). Every Polish soldier was looking up to the sky with a hope that the British would

not provide any aid; I am beginning to become angry with them after they continuously desert us

shoot at the German soldiers, and I did not flee. I will always try to protect my family and make sure
that the Germans do not enter Warsaw. Most of my fellow soldiers had the same mindset and
continue to fight. Nevertheless, it was hard to continue when your ears are filled with the sounds of
bombs going off. Eventually, we Polish soldiers began to struggle with our lack of amo (5). It did
not help us that the Germans were continuing to get reinforcements from their country. Everyone

An Analysis Of Bette Greene's The Summer Of My German Soldier
An action, a statement, one instant, has the power to alter your life and for young Patricia Bergen in
the young adult fiction novel, The Summer of my German Soldier by Bette Greene, many different
conflicts she had to face caused her to think very poorly of herself. Fortunately, with the influence of
one German soldier her whole mindset was revised. In the beginning of the novel , Patty Bergen
portrays as an insecure, desperate, and a solitary young girl, but at the resolution of the story we see
Patty as a confident, mature, and hopeful young woman who dreams of life away from the hardships
she faced.
When Patty Bergen is first introduced, we get an impression of Patty's life at home and her parent's
behavior towards her. Patty's father physically abuses her for misbehaving yet he beats Patty
mercilessly for foolish reasons in particular Mr. Bergen on page 106 and 107, " God damn you! He
shouted at me. You'll obey me if it kills you!". In this quote, the harsh treatment Patty had to
experienced is displayed, the reader can notice that at the point, the quote occurs, Henry Bergen
assaults his daughter for a very foolish reason, explaining the reason why Patty is very
unaccompanied and how she is very determined to be adored by her parents. Not only is Patty
physically abused, but her mother verbally abuses her with insults and comments that cause Patty to
think she needs to revise her appearance. Mrs. Bergen's actions are demonstrated when Patty enters

"paths of glory and the black Hawks down." paths of glory is a film that begins in a large country
house in France where Genaral Mireau and General Brouland were discussing about the possibility
of an attack on the Ant hill. Mireau was pacing around the room while talking. General Mireau of
the World War 1 French army accepts a mission for his men that he knows they cannot achieve
anything but he taught that might lead him to his promotions. Although he accepts this impossible
assignment to get promoted, he tries to speak about how his men's lives are the most important to
him, his future actions revealed to be empty persuaded. Mireau passes his their objectives on to Dax
who is in charge of a large group of men at the front. On the other hand, the black Hawks down is
about the true story based on the United States involving in Somalia during unhappy and concerned
with the mission over there. United States soldiers were sent to Somalia to help ... Show more

These soldiers never have freedom to speak or raise concerns because they were afraid. For
example, Mireau was so cruel, when he asked the solders the questions he never even stopped and
wait for the response from them. Dax is the only one who cares about the soldiers because their lives
are getting cheated and he was caring, compassionate and human than Mireau. In paths of glory, the
soldiers never killed any of their enemies rather most of them were killed. On the black hawk down
there was nothing the soldiers experienced like this being treated like trash and their lives were
cared for by the rescue team. Also the soldiers were kind, caring for others and compassionate. They
had to stop and help their fellow before the rescue team

Ordinary Germans and Soldiers are also Guilty for the...
Ordinary Germans and soldiers are culpable in the Holocaust in addition to Hitler and the Nazi inner
circle. They are guilty for the Holocaust as well because of their long–standing antisemitism,
knowledge of the enormities, and actual assistance in the Holocaust. Although Hitler was the leading
force for the Holocaust, he was supported by ordinary Germans and soldiers who agreed with his
beliefs and participated in the atrocities just as much.
Antisemitism was the beginning and the cause of the Holocaust. The term antisemitism was actually
created by a German Journalist by the name of Wilhelm Marr, created to give a name for the hatred
for Jews (Ezard). Antisemitism fueled the Holocaust, the German hatred for the Jews was there even
before Hitler as described by historian Robert Gellately: "What the Nazis actually did was to
unshackle and thereby activate Germans' pre–existing, pent–up antisemitism" (qtd in Ezard). One of
the major decisions Hitler made inspiring this hatred was the creation of the Nuremberg Laws in
1935, these laws made Jew a completely different race, and created Aryan into a superior race
(Ezard). These laws made it official that the Jews were a lesser "race," giving another excuse for the
people to wreak hatred upon them. If the Germans had tried to stop the Hitler and the Nazis the
Holocaust couldn't have happened (Mckay). If even half the Germans had resisted the damage
would have been much less drastic.

The Book Thief By Annemarie Johansen: The German Soldier
It was September 1943 in Copenhagen, Denmark, when just 10 year old Annemarie Johansen
promised that as a danish Citizen if need be she would die for her King. Courage was what it took to
survive the German occupation in their country. Although the German soldiers that stood at every
street corner weren't there to harm her family, they were there to relocate all Jews. Which soon
included Annemarie's lifelong friend, Ellen. Not only as a danish citizen promising to die for your
kings safety, Annemarie also was willing to die for the safety of her friends too. Which is exactly
what she did. The German soldier's went throughout the city to every apartment at which known

Denmark in 1943 was already overtaken by the Germans, War World 2 was taking place in
surrounding countries, along with the campaign to relocate all Jews. Although a lot was happening,
Denmark was dark and quiet. German Soldier's stood at every street corner, watching the Danish
people at every move they made and keeping things calm. Running was not allowed and neither
were rowdy kids. Electricity was cut back to a short supply and so was food. Living was very
difficult and became a strict routine that everyone followed in the busy city. She really emphasized

German Soldiers Fought The Fuhrer 's Ideological War
German soldiers fought the Führer's ideological war. Hitler wanted the German race to take over the
world. Heinrich Bölls book, And Where Were You, Adam?, describes several soldiers and their lives
at the end of World War II. In the chaos of war, they found various reasons to capitulate with the
Holocaust and other atrocities, but at the same time, tried to find some normalcy and sanity in an
insane situation. Just as other warriors in other wars, they were humans who found themselves in an
inhuman situation. They were concerned with the defense of their homeland, family, and future.
They were not monsters, but men serving under monstrous leaders and nefarious conditions.
Germans foot soldiers went to war for several reasons such as German pride, honor, and love of the
fatherland. Personal recognition and medals were important to many. The fever of a new and
stronger Germany swept up the soldiers and it was their duty to serve the Reich. They took an oath
of allegiance to Hitler (Spielvogel 118). Nazis indoctrinated new recruits with their philosophy.
Soldiers did not realize the wickedness that lay ahead. Once in the midst of war, however, Germans
became disillusioned and frightened. Some thought of home and loved ones while other worried
their link to past war crimes and rule violations. Many soldiers waited for the inevitable surrender
and others committed suicide. The war took the lives of many brave Germans without the
achievement of

The Battle Of Vimy Ridge

Battle of Vimy Ridge
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was one of the greatest military battles ever fought. This battle
contributed to Canada's coming of age as a nation. The taking of Vimy Ridge claimed more than
200,000 lives during the first World War and will forever remain in the history as one of the worlds
great military triumphs. The Canadian Military used extensive planning, new innovative weaponry
and relied on the tremendous courage and sacrifice of its soldiers in order to claim victory.
The Canadian Military's extensive planning of the assault on Vimy Ridge was one of the main
reasons for its successful victory. Prior to the assault, the Canadian troops were intensely prepared in
terms of their training. The soldiers were so well trained that if their leader was killed they would be
able to follow through with the plan with great precision and execution. The battle was so thought
out that there was absolutely nothing left to chance. The Canadians created maps of the entire ridge
created from many previous ridge assaults (Stephens, John. "Innovations.") along with arial photos
of the location. As the Canadians captured German Soldiers they would try to make out as much
information of the terrain as possible (Foot, Richard. "Meticulous Preparation.") The maps would
have the location of the German defences and provided them with the timetable of the checkpoints
and trench outlines. The maps were

Hitler 's Second World War II
September 1, 1939: Silence in Europe is brought to an abrupt end! German forces storm the Polish
borders, and break the Non–Aggression Pact laid forth over five years before (EyeWitness). The
Fuhrer spoke of the Poles breaking down the peace talks, and of the atrocities committed upon the
Germanic people by them (Hitler, Adolf), but these highly exaggerated claims veiled Hitler's true
intentions: Though Hitler's primary goal was the conquering of Europe, hindsight shows that the
removal of groups of people he disliked or thought of as 'lesser' were included in his plans from the
start. Two days later, on September 3rd, Great Britain and France declared war on Germany: This
was it, the Second World War had begun (EyeWitness).

It has been my observation that the Germanic peoples have always had an affinity for battle and
glory. Hitler plays into this with his constant use of propaganda, inspiring the German people to
fight for honor, bravery, glory and all such related terms. Finally he concludes his short speech with
a bout of Nationalism: "Long live our people and our Reich!" (Hitler, Adolf)
My next source is the Diary from the Years of Occupation 1939–1944, by Dr. Zygmunt Klukowski a
Polish chief physician of a small hospital south of Lublin, Poland. His first entry is on October 11,
after the Germans have settled in: he starts by stating the Germans are trying to clean up the city, but
then details that they're using the Jews as laborers for it. "Jews must sweep the streets, clean all the
public latrines, and fill all the street trenches." (Klukowski) He continues on to say that they must
de–arm and finally adds that there is a police curfew in effect. Finally he surmises that "it seems
most of the orders are aimed at the Jews." (Klukowski) Another entry states that the Germans have
been executing mentally ill patients from the nearby hospitals. "It is so hard to believe anything as
terrible as this." (Klukowski) October 21, 1942, he witnesses the beginning of the "so called German
displacement of the Jews" (Klukowski) Here Klukowski speaks of the indescribable atrocities he
witnesses and hears. The Jews were all either rounded up and brought to

German Soldiers Going To War Analysis
For those trying to rouse a nation to war this type of psychological pressure was systematic and
deliberate. It was to be repeated and reinforced many times by peers, parents and even children. A
well known poster of the time showed children questioning a man why he was not going to war –
after all it was 'common knowledge' that German soldiers delighted in killing children and raping
women! Stories 'exposing' these atrocities had little basis in fact, but some of the most outrageous
were seized upon and circulated in an attempt to maintain this 'frenzy for war.' For some weeks
Belgium had been depicted as a violated maiden and the hysteria darkened to hatred of all things
German. Stories spread that German troops had tied Belgian nuns to ... Show more content on

'It is disappointing to know that so many of the young men of Epworth are shirking their duty.
Surely they do not expect the women to fight their battles for them, to do all that can be done, whilst
they stand in the background and look on. This would be very un–English of them. I hope it cannot
be said that they are deaf to the call of their King and Country or that they are afraid of doing their
duty. Of course I realise that it would be hard to lose them, but at such an hour it should be "Death
before Dishonour." I hope they will come before it is too late; come now, for even tomorrow might
be too late!' It had been suggested by the mothers of boys in training that they were having a rough
time of it. Evidence from some letters home seemed to counter this. Although many found the nights
in camp cold and windy, they wrote of having 'a very good time,' and spoke of the manner in which
they had been received throughout the country. One letter spoke of the huts being like Church
Missions, with mattresses made of straw that were really comfortable. To wash, the recruits had to
run down to the other end of the camp and fill buckets. For about an hour before breakfast the men
did physical drill with their coats off. Breakfast consisted of streaky bacon and for dinner it was,
'stew, stew, stew,' with a tea of bread, butter, jam and

Irony In The Summer Of My German Soldier
Question 1: In the novel, The Summer of My German Soldier, stereotypes play a key role on how
the townspeople standardize and classify others who are different. Black, White, Asian, German, or
Jewish doesn't matter what race, you can still be stereotyped. For example, an Asian man whom was
mistaken as Japanese, was stereotyped as a terrorists–like person, because of the bombing on Pearl
Harbor. As a result, he and his family were ran out of town. Another example would be Anton
Reiker, a German Nazi–prisoner who was stereotyped by the townspeople as a murderer. Because of
Hitler and the Nazi's cruel, and unusual actions towards certain people. Then there is Patty Bergen, a
girl who proves some Jewish stereotypes correct, she is a loud mouth ... Show more content on

For example, the reader does not expect a German prisoner to befriend a young, Jewish girl during
this time. Give 3 examples of irony in The Summer of My German Soldier. Besides the obvious, a
German prisoner becoming friends with a young Jewish girl, there are still many other examples of
irony. Question 3: The ending of the novel, in my opinion, was very depressing and filled with
tragedy. Before Anton was killed, I felt that Patty and Anton had a liking for each other maybe even
love. To think that death ruined their chances at love and there only chance at happiness is really
depressing and sad. If I was the author, Bette Greene, I would have made the ending into something
like a happily ever after fairytale. It would begin on a Thursday and the FBI putting out a warrant
for Anton and Patty's arrest. Her parents and grandparents hear about it, and decide to hide and
disguise them both. Later on that day a female FBI agent knocked on their door, patty grandmother
answered saying "what can I do you for". "I'm looking for Patty Bergen and Anton Reiker" said the
agent, but little she know there was no more patty and Anton. They were now Rebecca and Jacob,
the agent was convinced that they were who they say they were. Eventually the warrant was
dropped because they FBI got tired of looking for them, and Rebecca and Jacob lived happily ever
after in there secret hideout. Of course with the help of her

What Makes One Happy In Bette Greene's Summer Of My German...
Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene is a poignant book that delivers a powerful
message about discovering what makes one happy. In this book, a young girl named Patty Bergen is
living in Arkansas during WWII. She lives with a family who makes her feel unloved and she longs
for a friend. Patty hides Anton, a German prisoner in her house and she ends up developing a close
bond with him. The main theme of Summer of My German Soldier is that one must find the values
within themselves in order to derive happiness and lead a successful life. This is proven by the
actions of both Patty and her father. Patty is able to demonstrate the theme through her actions in the
book. Before hiding Anton, Patty was constantly abased by the critiques of her parents telling her
that she wasn't pretty or that she had no worth."From the day you were born you've brought me
nothing but misery," (Greene 161). This particular quote that was said to Patty by her father shows
why it was so difficult for Patty to find happiness. By hiding Anton, Patty was able to feel good

Otto Dix's Corpse In Barbed Wire
Through the cultural frame, artworks are concerned with understanding how an artwork is

Like many of Dix's generation in Germany during the 1920s, he drew from the German
expressionist movement in his use of distortion, directness, media and subject matter in plate 1.
German expressionism involved directness, frankness and a desire to startle the viewer. Their works
embraced printmaking and focused on the emotions expressed rather than reality. Dix heightens the
emotions effects through his meticulous rendered, horrific images. The brilliant white bones stand
out against the darker background. He experimentation with printmaking and used multiple acid

The military is very strict on its policies for shaving in order to make its soldiers look more
presentable. In the military's view every soldier must be clean shaven with the exception of
moustaches, profiles, or in the Special Forces. The military thinks shaving is important because it
makes soldiers look more professional. In the military's view full beards and moustaches are
unprofessional and undisciplined because it makes soldiers look like they don't care about their

Some other military's like the German military has no shaving regulation allowing their soldiers to
grow beards and moustaches as they please. This gives the German soldiers a more casual look
rather than a professional look. In my opinion soldiers should be allowed to grow out their beards
and moustaches as long and as thick as they want. The army is about discipline and control, however
like a teenage kid under his parents strict rules a soldier would want to break the rules in order to
feel freedom in their lives. By placing regulations on soldiers to constrict the soldiers into doing
what one person thinks is the most professional thing, helping a soldier be best prepared to protect
his country when in need? What about in a several day conflict against enemy troops? Is a soldier
undisciplined or unprofessional because he didn't shave while bullets were flying over his head?
Maybe not, but the army considers that soldier as undisciplined if that soldier doesn't shave
immediately after coming back from the field. In my eye's the army is telling that soldier that they
don't care if that soldiers friends died in that conflict, but the army does care about how that soldier
looks after the battle. I can see how having facial hair can make some people look unprofessional

Soldiers Fighting for their Country in Enrich Maria...
Everywhere thick, hot gory blood drips from comrade's wounds. The stench of death hovers in the
air and encases every movement. A faint buzz whizzes into the ear drums as shells and bullets fluster
by with brilliant flashes of light. These are the everyday encounters of a soldier on the front. No
words can even begin to touch the realness of terror that soldiers experience every day. Young
recruits are reeled into this torture and sacrifice everything they have and love for their country.
Lively hopefuls are transformed into the unfeeling. The soldiers must think of memories as, "too
grievous for us [them] to reflect on them at once." (pp. 138) They forget, lest their state of mind
plummet. Few, if any capture the graphic life and thoughts of the soldier better than Enrich Maria
Remarque in his moving book All Quiet on the Western Front. This epic book follows a young
German military recruit named Paul Bäumer and his classmates who come face to face with the
gunfire of the Allies during World War I. Through Remarque's well–chosen words and imagery, an
average citizen is transported from their comfy home to the trenches and front lines of heated battle.
In Enrich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, he successfully illustrates what it's like
to be a soldier during war and the extent in which everyday people sacrifice their lives when
fighting for their country. The graphic visuals that Enrich Maria Remarque portrays in All Quiet on

Generals Die In Bed By Charles Yale Harrison

  • 1. Generals Die In Bed By Charles Yale Harrison Through the soldiers' experiences, the narrator shows only the dark side of human nature. Discuss. Generals die in Bed by Charles Yale Harrison is a novel where a young Canadian soldier tells of his first hand account of the harsh and inhumane conditions in the trenches on the Western Front during World War 1. Through his observations and experiences the Narrator shows the effects of war on ordinary people and how they manage in extraordinarily horrific situations. Even though the brutal nature of the war is often reflected in the violent way that combatants act towards one another there are also moments when compassion and mercy is shown. The novel demonstrates that in extreme situations both the dark and the good side of human ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However we also are shown bravery, companionship and acts of kindness as the soldiers struggle to stay humane and sane in a hellish environment. Throughout the novel they are compassionate and caring to even their enemies in their darkest moments. They also illustrate the dark and unforgiving side of human nature. They show no pity or mercy even while being pleaded too. Throughout the novel the Narrator often shows compassion towards others – in his actions – eg. letting the German soldier grieve for his dead brother letting him take 'a few letters and papers from his brother's pockets' and imagines how their mother would feel. He then helps the Germans to safety behind the lines & asks that 'the prisoners be treated nicely.' Just like their constant companions the lice and the rats, the soldiers in the trench adapt to the hell that they find themselves trapped in – doing whatever it takes to survive. They even fight each other over food 'at each others throats like hungry, snarling animals'. As the novel & the war progresses so does the inhumane side of the soldiers who become increasing more detached from killing, unconcerned with the death of friends. The soldiers are conditioned, hardened up and desensitised with self preservation becoming a key motivator. This is shown as the soldiers plunder the city of Arras allies ' town and vandalize houses with no consideration of the local ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Once An Eagle By Anton Myrer Once an Eagle by Anton Myrer is a very influential novel in the military. In fact, it is required reading material for all 1st Lieutenants in the Marine Corps as well as in the United States Military Academy at West Point. Many Army leaders have read the book and often discuss it among themselves in social situations. Although a fiction read, many leaders extrapolate the use of mission command as well as the leaderships attributes. In this analysis I will be comparing a single event in the novel to the Army's leadership principles as well as Mission Command. I will then provide a personal reflection and conclude. Synopsis The book generally describes the rise in the ranks of the main protagonist, Sam Damon, from an enlistee, to NCO, to Officer where he eventually reaches the rank of a division commander. The setting and time changes, beginning in World War I, the years between the two wars, World War II and finally a fictionalized Vietnam where Damon is an advisor. Throughout the book Damon is able to rise in the ranks thanks to political connections, audacity, and willingness. Through time Damon himself changes, becoming more self oriented, and looses some of his purity (for lack of a better description) as he rises in the ranks. The event I will be focusing on is during Damon's earlier years, in WWI. At the time Damon is a NCO and is in charge of a platoon. It is during the middle years of WWI and Damon and his unit are sent in as a show of support. They are paraded in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Western Front Paul's Transformation Erich Maria Remarque's page–turning novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, is the greatest war novel ever written. The novel is narrated Paul Baumer, a 19 year–old German infantryman on the Western front during the first world war. The novel follows Paul and his fellow comrades throughout their journey in WW1. The story describes Paul as he goes through the life of a young German soldier. From meals and shortages to bombings and death, Paul is confronted with constant and at times extreme austerity throughout the novel. Afflictions, such as the deaths of his friends and fellow soldiers, plague Paul's expedition throughout the novel. At the end of the book, Paul is also faced with another affliction in his own impending death and his growing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The War On The Front Lines "The refusal to obey orders, or a violent attempt to take control from people of authority."1 The Great War was a rugged time for many throughout its duration from July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918. The speculations and thoughts of the general public and the soldiers in battle behind the ongoing war changed drastically over the four years. The moral and willpower of the soldiers declined heavily, and this had a large impact on how the war was fought. Many soldiers captured their accounts of these changes in journals as diaries and there is one French soldier's diary that accurately depicts mutiny on the front lines. There is a clear correlation between the changes in the amount of recruits and supplies available, the manner in which the war was fought, and the general feelings behind the war as time went on, which caused some soldiers to choose mutiny. At the beginning of the war, the duties behind what the soldiers had to do were largely appreciated and they were held above others as heroes. People of warring countries were rushing to battle and their loved ones were supporting them all of the way. Battalions were even formed from work groups, as they already withheld an established chain of command, the members had a close knit bond, and there was a charismatic feeling about representing the country they worked in. The glorified fighting and risking of one's life was soon changed. The way the war was fought also fiercely changed. The battle techniques early on in 1914 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Audie Murphy Facts . Purpose: To provide information about military soldier Audie Murphy and his significant impact on the military. 2. Facts: a. Audie Murphy had prior military service experience and advanced through the ranks quickly. He earned his first military decorations during Operation Dragoon. During that operation, he fought with courage and valor by ambushing a group of German Soldiers and using their machine guns and grenades against them. Though he had setbacks during this operation, he continued to have courage, and because of his efforts, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. During Operation Dragoon Murphy helped significantly reduce the number of German Soldiers which ultimately made a large impact on dispelling German operational ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many soldiers lost their lives, but they were few soldiers that fought with the valor of Audie Murphy. In January 1945, German forces attacked Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd infantry division in Holtzwihr. Approximately 250 German soldiers were heading towards the Bois de Reidwihr which they had planned to seize. The Americans felt unprepared when they discovered the presence of the German forces, so they decided to fall back. However, Audie Murphy decided to move forward and fight. He drew a .50 caliber and started shooting Germans as he believed that German advancements in this area needed to be stopped at all costs. This German infantryman were as close as 10 yards from Lieutenant Murphy, but he kept shooting at German infantry bodies. The bravery Murphy presented at Holtzwihr earned him the medal of honor. c. Murphy's valor came to a test when his battalion headed to Anzio. The Germans received an unexpected advantage because of a missed landing of American troops. The Germans moved 125,000 troops to position and attacked allied soldiers with artillery. Their commander got wounded, but Audie Murphy stepped up to lead his company during the enemies heavy fire. In recognition of his leadership efforts, Murphy got promoted to platoon leader and later earned a Bronze star in March 1994 for destroying a German tank on his own. • 11. Throughtout History, Illustrations and Paintings Have... Throughout history, notorious and creative people have used illustrations and paintings to play on people's emotions. One of the most famous examples of this was during World War I, with the use of propaganda posters to increase nationalistic feelings towards one's own country. Through the mass production and creativity of the posters, many young men enlisted in their nation's army to protect and support their country throughout the war. This first poster (see Figure 1) was used by Germans during World War I; on the bottom part of the poster there German writing which translates out to, "It is essential that the last blows achieve victory! Subscribe to the War Loan!" This is simply saying that, "in order to finish off the war, you need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This represents that the very well–dressed man is hiding in the shadows from the war; that he is trying to hide himself from the war altogether. On the other side of the window, there is light outside that has several lines of marching soldiers, with the American Flag flying right above them. Having the American flag flying above these soldiers, gives the sense that they are heroes for going to fight this war. Having the well–dressed man inside and the marching soldiers outside shows the viewer that the men who stay home and tremble in fear of the war do not deserve glory. On the other hand the soldiers that are outside deserve glory. Finally this last poster (see Figure 3) was used for English propaganda. In the background there is a burning building and two lines of soldiers. The lines of soldiers could represent two things: one being that the British army is much smaller compared to Germany's. The second is that in the line of soldiers, there appears to be a few empty spots which could correlate to the question at the top of the poster that asks, "WHO'S ABSENT?" and then asks another question at the bottom which is, "Is it you?" These two questions are directed at British men (usually between the ages of 18 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. What Differentiates Sfeelou's And Skandalis One year after the collection of short stories Νιότη χωρίς τραγούδια Sofia Fildisi published the novel Ο μεγάλος μας αδερφός also set in the period of the Occupation. Just like in her previous book, in this novel too, the author does not distinguish between Germans and Nazis and words like 'Nazism', 'Nazis' or 'Third Reich' are nowhere to be found in over one hundred fifty pages of narrative text. This is of particular importance as Ο μεγάλος μας αδερφός is the only text published in the first period the metapolitefsi which does mention the existence of Nazi concentration camps. The reference to the concentration camps, however, is completely disassociated from its context and the younger reader who lacks the extratextual knowledge is likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In both books the Germans are portrayed in a neutral way and the words 'soldiers', 'occupiers', 'occupation troops', 'foreigners' and 'enemies' are amongst those employed by the authors to refer to the Germans. What differentiates Sfaelou's and Skandalis's narratives from those that have talked about so far, however, is that both writers make use of the term 'Nazis', while in one of Skandalis's short stories the term 'Third Reich' also comes across. Nonetheless, none of the writers provide any further explanations, either in the narrative text or in the paratext, which would help the young reader to put the terms in question into their historical and ideopolitical context. Furthermore, none of the authors are concerned to distinguish between Germans as a national group and Nazis as a group of supporters of a certain ideological doctrine and in both texts the word 'Nazi' is used as an alternative word for 'Germans'. Since no distinctions are made between Germans and Nazis, the switching between the two words renders them synonymous. In other words, the Germans are 'Nazified' and the Nazis are 'Germanised' while 'Germanness' and 'Nazism' are conflated in the identity of the enemy with whatever implications this might have to the young reader's conceptualization of ... • 15. Two Poem The Dead When thinking of World War I many different things come to mind. When thinking of the dawn of the 20th century one thinks of its 19th century legacies like the fin de siècle or the belle époque . Both of these ideas symbolize how the start of the 20th century meant different things to different people. The same can be said with the feelings and ideas attached to the great war. The feelings of war in the United States were much different then what was most likely felt among Europe. Also, the views of the allied powers were distinct from that of the axis power. However, despite all of these differences when looking at the collection of Great War Poems we see that for the soldiers it was all the same. By reading the words of the French, German, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even if they survived many of them came home in pieces and maimed. The author talks about the loss of his leg but then adds how the rats ate his leg and he ate the rats . This shows some of the atrocities that all of the soldiers had to face during the war. In the end all he got to show for it was the "Croix de Guerre and a wooden leg." This was the unfortunate reality of many of the soldiers who were even lucky enough to return from the war. Another poem about death "The Dead–Beat" talks about death in a straightforward and seemingly insensitive way. In the opening paragraph the author says that when the soldier dropped it "Lay stupid like a cod, heavy like meat." This could seem crude to a reader, but this is how things were in times of war. In order to survive mentally as well as physically these men had to form a sense of detachment and at times even become inhumane. This crudeness is seen further in the closing line, "That scum you sent last night soon died. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through the past couple of weeks, I've read these two very interesting books; "The Diary of a Young Girl" by Anne Frank and "Summer of My German Soldier" by Bette Greene. These two books are told from the perspectives of two young girls, who struggle through life as Jews. "The Diary of a Young Girl" is told from the perspective of Anne Frank and "Summer of My German Soldier" is told from Patricia Bergen's perspective. Anne and Patricia have many similarities, but they also contrast in some ways too. My goal is to show how they are similar and how they're also different. "The Diary of a Young Girl" starts on Anne Frank's thirteenth birthday and which she receives her first diary. She calls her diary Kitty and she confides everything in her ... • 19. Analysis Of Saving Private Ryan This is where the film, Saving Private Ryan enters the highlight of movie watchers with Tom Hanks as Captain Miller also lead character in the cast. Captain Miller leads a squad of vivacious soldiers through blood, sweat, cruelty, and tears. The film brings battles of D–Day on the beach and afterwards fight from towns to search for Private James Ryan in effect of military post office sending out service letters to beloved family members to being notified of their loved one's bravery in action upon their death. The film does over dramatize on the emotional reaction on the General's order stating to rescue Privat Ryan from the war due to recent news of loss of Private Ryan's brothers' deaths as it stands Private Ryan being the last son of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Captain Miller told them, "Are we going to leave this bunker to cut down another squad that might not know about this position?". The squad fell into line of command. However, the film does deviates from the chain of command structure of where Captain Miller decides to overturn an order from Master Sergeant giving an order to a Private to take his gun to kill a surrendering Nazi. Tom Hanks a.k.a. Captain Miller turns the situation to non–belligerence by reminding the squad of their humanity; then he walks to tends to the dead United State Army soldiers and giving them a proper burial as the rest of squad joins him in helping. Furthermore, the film reveals embroideries between facts and exaggerations. The film adheres to the same military tactics of fighting the enemy by flanking and forward assaults. For example, Captain Miller and his squad found an enemy's bunker position. Captain Miller drew out a battle of pushing three sides in groups of two. One group up the middle, second group up the right, and third group up the left assaulting the bunker. They used cover to lay suppression fire on machine gun nest. When, one group was close enough within throwing distance for grenades. They would throw grenades to force the enemy out of trench to expose them to fire. The film is accurate on tactics. On D–Day, the same method was used to advance to cover within the gun fire of the bunkers. Captain Miller setting up ambush ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. All Quiet On The Western Front Paul is German, but he can just as easily be any soldier. To an American reader, Baumer is "the enemy" since he is a German soldier in WWI. But through the expression of Baumer 's thoughts and emotions, we quickly realize the commonality between soldiers of both sides, and the pointlessness of war, with thousands of men dying for nothing. All Quiet on the Western Front separates the cold sterile facts and figures and gives the reader insight into the experiences of an ordinary soldier. The author's main theme centers not only on the loss of innocence by Paul and his soldiers, but the loss of an entire generation. The soldiers of all nations watched their friends die, starve and lose a part of themselves. Paul's story is universal and relevant today as was when it was first published. All Quiet on the Western Front is told from the perspective of German soldier, Paul Baumer, who journals about the brutality and callousness of war. The novel chronicles the demise of Paul and his classmates from high school graduation and military basic training to the trenches of WWI battlefields. Paul Baumer, is as an idealistic young poet swept away by the Rhetoric of his teacher and the misguided patriotism of his peers. He is in many ways just a child that hasn't traveled beyond his own backyard. The novel starts off with Kemmerich dying a slow and painful death. Kemmerich owns a nice pair of boots. Effects of War Exposed in All Quite on the Western Front, Bury the Dead, and Paths of Glory "From the happy expression on their faces you might have supposed that they welcomed the war. I have met with men who loved stamps, and stones, and snakes, but I could not imagine any man loving war." Margot Asquith revealed her discontent with war in this quote. War is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as a concerted effort or campaign to combat or put an end to something considered injurious. A rather contradicting definition from the dictionary when one examines war's true meaning and the effect it has on mankind. Wars do not put an end to something considered injurious, war starts them. Before the war, Paul was a scholar who had ambitions and hopes for success in life. Unfortunately, war quenched that desire for success as revealed in the book when he returned home for a short stay. Paul's self confidence and sense of belonging in society was gone. He no longer shared any interest in his books, felt melancholic most of the time, and do not have the same outlook towards life as others did. Even though Paul tried very hard at concealing his inner emotions and to stage a bold front, it is not very difficult for the reader to see that a psychological battle was taking place inside him. "I ought to have never come here. Out there I was indifferent and often hopeless–I will never be able to be so again." Paul reveals that his trip home made him realize the destructive effects war had on his character and he regretted going home. Another challenge to Paul's mental strength came when he was in one of the enemy's trenches. In that trench, Paul came face to face with a French soldier, whom he considered his enemy. It was in that trench that he found out that French soldiers were just as human as German soldiers. Confusion struck Paul as he tried to make sense of the common German soldier belief that all French are animals and should be killed without mercy. • 27. All Quiet On The Western Front Analysis The novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Remarque is about a German foot soldier in the First World War. It is known that World War 1 was really a horrific one as millions were killed on the battlefield. Though this novel was written in 1928 it really helps people in the 21st century understand the suffering and pain that the soldiers went through. The protagonist Paul along with his comrades were put in many unfamiliar situations where they were expected to kill the enemy and come home unharmed. The theme ; soldiers dehumanize their enemies in war, so they do not hesitate and get themselves killed, appears many times in the text. This book dwells deep into the how the soldiers must dehumanize their enemies to kill them with no emotion. It portrays the horrors of war and how civilians were turned into killing machines to survive. If the soldiers were to think even for one second their chances of survival went down exponentially. Throughout the book, Paul and the other German soldiers dehumanize French and Russians. The Germans are said to turn into "instant human animals" when going to the front (56). When humans have the feeling of turning into animals, it would be sensible to assume that they believe they are stooping down to the level of the enemy to hunt them. This also shows the amount of rage the soldiers have against the opposing side, as it said they turn into animals as the front is approached. In the English language when figuratively it is said to turn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Ordinary Germans and Soldiers are also Guilty for the... Ordinary Germans and soldiers are culpable in the Holocaust in addition to Hitler and the Nazi inner circle. They are guilty for the Holocaust as well because of their long–standing antisemitism, knowledge of the enormities, and actual assistance in the Holocaust. Although Hitler was the leading force for the Holocaust, he was supported by ordinary Germans and soldiers who agreed with his beliefs and participated in the atrocities just as much. Antisemitism was the beginning and the cause of the Holocaust. The term antisemitism was actually created by a German Journalist by the name of Wilhelm Marr, created to give a name for the hatred for Jews (Ezard). Antisemitism fueled the Holocaust, the German hatred for the Jews was there even before Hitler as described by historian Robert Gellately: "What the Nazis actually did was to unshackle and thereby activate Germans' pre–existing, pent–up antisemitism" (qtd in Ezard). One of the major decisions Hitler made inspiring this hatred was the creation of the Nuremberg Laws in 1935, these laws made Jew a completely different race, and created Aryan into a superior race (Ezard). These laws made it official that the Jews were a lesser "race," giving another excuse for the people to wreak hatred upon them. If the Germans had tried to stop the Hitler and the Nazis the Holocaust couldn't have happened (Mckay). If even half the Germans had resisted the damage would have been much less drastic. Heinrich Bölls book, And Where Were You, Adam?, describes several soldiers and their lives at the end of World War II. In the chaos of war, they found various reasons to capitulate with the Holocaust and other atrocities, but at the same time, tried to find some normalcy and sanity in an insane situation. Just as other warriors in other wars, they were humans who found themselves in an inhuman situation. They were concerned with the defense of their homeland, family, and future. They were not monsters, but men serving under monstrous leaders and nefarious conditions. Germans foot soldiers went to war for several reasons such as German pride, honor, and love of the fatherland. Personal recognition and medals were important to many. The fever of a new and stronger Germany swept up the soldiers and it was their duty to serve the Reich. They took an oath of allegiance to Hitler (Spielvogel 118). Nazis indoctrinated new recruits with their philosophy. Soldiers did not realize the wickedness that lay ahead. Once in the midst of war, however, Germans became disillusioned and frightened. This battle contributed to Canada's coming of age as a nation. The taking of Vimy Ridge claimed more than 200,000 lives during the first World War and will forever remain in the history as one of the worlds great military triumphs. The Canadian Military used extensive planning, new innovative weaponry and relied on the tremendous courage and sacrifice of its soldiers in order to claim victory. The Canadian Military's extensive planning of the assault on Vimy Ridge was one of the main reasons for its successful victory. Prior to the assault, the Canadian troops were intensely prepared in terms of their training. The soldiers were so well trained that if their leader was killed they would be able to follow through with the plan with great precision and execution. The battle was so thought out that there was absolutely nothing left to chance. The Canadians created maps of the entire ridge created from many previous ridge assaults (Stephens, John. "Innovations.") along with arial photos of the location. As the Canadians captured German Soldiers they would try to make out as much information of the terrain as possible (Foot, Richard. "Meticulous Preparation.") The maps would have the location of the German defences and provided them with the timetable of the checkpoints and trench outlines. The maps were ... It was to be repeated and reinforced many times by peers, parents and even children. A well known poster of the time showed children questioning a man why he was not going to war – after all it was 'common knowledge' that German soldiers delighted in killing children and raping women! Stories 'exposing' these atrocities had little basis in fact, but some of the most outrageous were seized upon and circulated in an attempt to maintain this 'frenzy for war.' For some weeks Belgium had been depicted as a violated maiden and the hysteria darkened to hatred of all things German. Stories spread that German troops had tied Belgian nuns to ... Another example would be Anton Reiker, a German Nazi–prisoner who was stereotyped by the townspeople as a murderer. Because of Hitler and the Nazi's cruel, and unusual actions towards certain people. Then there is Patty Bergen, a girl who proves some Jewish stereotypes correct, she is a loud mouth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, the reader does not expect a German prisoner to befriend a young, Jewish girl during this time. Give 3 examples of irony in The Summer of My German Soldier. Besides the obvious, a German prisoner becoming friends with a young Jewish girl, there are still many other examples of irony. Question 3: The ending of the novel, in my opinion, was very depressing and filled with tragedy. Before Anton was killed, I felt that Patty and Anton had a liking for each other maybe even love. To think that death ruined their chances at love and there only chance at happiness is really depressing and sad. If I was the author, Bette Greene, I would have made the ending into something like a happily ever after fairytale. It would begin on a Thursday and the FBI putting out a warrant for Anton and Patty's arrest. Her parents and grandparents hear about it, and decide to hide and disguise them both. Later on that day a female FBI agent knocked on their door, patty grandmother answered saying "what can I do you for". "I'm looking for Patty Bergen and Anton Reiker" said the agent, but little she know there was no more patty and Anton. They were now Rebecca and Jacob, the agent was convinced that they were who they say they were. Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene is a poignant book that delivers a powerful message about discovering what makes one happy. In this book, a young girl named Patty Bergen is living in Arkansas during WWII. She lives with a family who makes her feel unloved and she longs for a friend. Patty hides Anton, a German prisoner in her house and she ends up developing a close bond with him. The main theme of Summer of My German Soldier is that one must find the values within themselves in order to derive happiness and lead a successful life. This is proven by the actions of both Patty and her father. Patty is able to demonstrate the theme through her actions in the book. Before hiding Anton, Patty was constantly abased by the critiques of her parents telling her that she wasn't pretty or that she had no worth."From the day you were born you've brought me nothing but misery," (Greene 161). In my whole life nobody has ever loved me,'"(Greene 116). After beating Patty one day, Mr. Bergen repeated this phrase, which showed that throughout his life, Mr. Bergen constantly relied on other people to make him feel loved and better about himself. Like many of Dix's generation in Germany during the 1920s, he drew from the German expressionist movement in his use of distortion, directness, media and subject matter in plate 1. German expressionism involved directness, frankness and a desire to startle the viewer. Their works embraced printmaking and focused on the emotions expressed rather than reality. Dix heightens the emotions effects through his meticulous rendered, horrific images. The brilliant white bones stand out against the darker background. In the military's view every soldier must be clean shaven with the exception of moustaches, profiles, or in the Special Forces. The military thinks shaving is important because it makes soldiers look more professional. In the military's view full beards and moustaches are unprofessional and undisciplined because it makes soldiers look like they don't care about their personal hygiene. Some other military's like the German military has no shaving regulation allowing their soldiers to grow beards and moustaches as they please. This gives the German soldiers a more casual look rather than a professional look. In my opinion soldiers should be allowed to grow out their beards and moustaches as long and as thick as they want. The army is about discipline and control, however like a teenage kid under his parents strict rules a soldier would want to break the rules in order to feel freedom in their lives. By placing regulations on soldiers to constrict the soldiers into doing what one person thinks is the most professional thing, helping a soldier be best prepared to protect his country when in need? What about in a several day conflict against enemy troops? Is a soldier undisciplined or unprofessional because he didn't shave while bullets were flying over his head? Maybe not, but the army considers that soldier as undisciplined if that soldier doesn't shave immediately after coming back from the field. In my eye's the army is telling that soldier that they don't care if that soldiers friends died in that conflict, but the army does care about how that soldier looks after the battle. • 75. Soldiers Fighting for their Country in Enrich Maria... Everywhere thick, hot gory blood drips from comrade's wounds. The stench of death hovers in the air and encases every movement. A faint buzz whizzes into the ear drums as shells and bullets fluster by with brilliant flashes of light. These are the everyday encounters of a soldier on the front. No words can even begin to touch the realness of terror that soldiers experience every day. Young recruits are reeled into this torture and sacrifice everything they have and love for their country. Lively hopefuls are transformed into the unfeeling. The soldiers must think of memories as, "too grievous for us [them] to reflect on them at once." (pp. 138) They forget, lest their state of mind plummet. Few, if any capture the graphic life and thoughts of the soldier better than Enrich Maria Remarque in his moving book All Quiet on the Western Front. This epic book follows a young German military recruit named Paul Bäumer and his classmates who come face to face with the gunfire of the Allies during World War I. Through Remarque's well–chosen words and imagery, an average citizen is transported from their comfy home to the trenches and front lines of heated battle. In Enrich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, he successfully illustrates what it's like to be a soldier during war and the extent in which everyday people sacrifice their lives when fighting for their country. The guns are proving to be exceptionally powerful ; I don't think that any fort can withstand them. They have no chance at victory. Liège will soon fall. We are firmly entrenched and the men are constantly digging out more. The smell is foul and the area the most unhygienic. The stench of rotting flesh is now starting to get to me as well. The men hope for victory and have conducted themselves most valiantly. What wrenches the heart is to see the dead bodies of these starry eyed ones, which I think, will kill me before the Hun's bullet or shell. It is too terrible to be called a human affair; I pray it ends soon, so must you.
