Beaver State Essay
The Beaver State
Oregon
The state chosen was Oregon. Oregon was chosen because it sounded interesting. It is interesting
because it has wide open spaces, lakes, rivers, and forests. I have never been to oregon.
Oregon is located near the ocean in the north–west. It is above California and under Washington.
Their motto is The Union. The Oregon state flower is the Oregon Grape. The state tree is the
Douglas Fir. The state bird is the Western Meadowlark. The song is Oregon, my Oregon. The state
animal is a beaver. The state fish is a chinook salmon. The Oregon state rock is a Thunderegg.
Oregon has a population of 4 million people. The capital of Oregon is Salem. The largest city is
Portland. The nickname is the Beaver State. It became a state in 1859. Oregon is also the ninth
largest state in the United States. Oregon sits in two time zones, both Mountain and Pacific. Some of
the major colleges are OSU Oregon state university,University of Oregon, and the George Fox
University. Oregon is important for a couple reasons. In 1846 Oregon signed ... Show more content

One of these animals is the black bear, they are the largest carnivores in Oregon. The Black bear is
the only species of bear still in Oregon. The beaver inhabits the areas around rivers and streams. It is
the state due to the it popularity in the early days fur trading. There are less than two dozen gray
wolves in Oregon. They became almost extinct because they were hunted for killing off livestock.
The bald eagle is the United State's national bird and is common in Oregon, around lakes and rivers.
They make their nests in tall trees by the water. The Chinook salmon, also known as the King
salmon. They live in the rivers and Pacific waters. Along with Wolverines, Cougars, elk, and the
columbian white tailed deer many people believe sasquatch can be found in Oregon's deep forests.
Although, this is not a confirmed species, Oregon world's only sasquatch

Personal Narrative-Teton Dam Collapse
Teton Dam Collapse It was a normal day, beautiful even. The sky was clear, it was warm, you
wouldn't ever think that today would take multiple lives. There were no clouds in the sky. Little did I
know how much my life, and the inhabitants of my hometown, was going to change.
I have a family, and my kids were busy, so i suggested that my wife and i go take a walk since the
was such a nice day. We were taking a walk around our general area, when we felt a drop of water. It
had come from the upper area of the dam, although we had just assumed it to be droplets of rain.
After all, the dam had just been worked on quite recently. We went about our walk, and didn't think
about it again.
The dam provided us with additional water resources for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

gotten together since the church hadn't been damaged, we were going to use the church as a safe

too intense. The overall outcome of this whole situation was unimaginable. Four hundred million
dollars worth of damage came from the flood. Houses were in the roads, pine trees were
everywhere. Eleven lives were lost because of the disaster, as It went from a beautiful day, to the

Case Study: Congressman Raul Labrador
Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to work for Congressman Raul Labrador. He has no
official mission statement or clear cut objectives. That being said, he is a founding member of the
Republican House Freedom Caucus, and has a fierce commitment to the caucus's agenda.
Congressman Labrador was elected in 2011 after a stint in the Idaho House of Representatives. He
has two offices, the office in DC, and another in Meridian, Idaho. In the DC office there are 7 staff
members. With one exception, all staff members have been graduated from college for less than 4
years. It is an incredibly young staff, most of which are from Idaho. They all have college degrees
but are relatively new to Capitol Hill. The office also has high turnover. ... Show more content on

The people that work there are very nice and they are people that I would want to spend time with
on the weekends. They are all very fun and witty, but not very professional. On one occasion the
Chief of staff told a fellow intern to shut up and never talk again for mentioning a football team loss.
On another occasion the intern supervisor unplugged the other intern's computer, in the middle of a
project, and giggled as she walked out. This kind of behavior is not profession for students to be in,
nor is it an uplifting environment to excel in. In part, the office struggles because it's staff are so
young. There is an energy that comes with youth, but in this case there is also an immaturity. The
decision making process is emotional, and there is a lot of inconsistency with decisions. The
decision maker is the chief of staff, and he has to ok everything before it is done. But there is no
black of white answers, and he gives different answers arbitrarily. Our office is structured a bit
differently and there is a partial wall that separates us from the chief of staff, so he can hear us and
we can hear him. This means that he gives instruction throughout the day over the

Personal Narrative Essay: Planetary Salmon
An epic and timeless battle plays out in annually in our beautiful province. From late summer until
early winter salmon valiantly fight their way back from the ocean to their home rivers where they
first hatched. This is the stuff of legends and folklore! It is difficult to articulate the impact a single
fish has had on the people of BC, but suffice it to say the salmon run is unquestionably a marvel of
nature. From Adams River to Vancouver Island's Goldstream Park, there are countless rivers, parks
and public places to view the eternal cycle of spawning. Closer to home, in the heart of Stanley
Park, sits a unique demonstration stream, winding its way from the Vancouver Aquarium to Coal
Harbour. Easily missed, yet well worth a visit, the BC Hydro Salmon Stream Project features a self–
guided walking tour and presents an incredible opportunity to learn more about a natural salmon
stream, healthy habitat and the salmon life cycle. Like the battle–weary salmon, the interpretive
signage is slightly battered, bruised and weather–beaten. However, the salmon stewardship message
is clear. As I stopped near the fish ladder, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The water was like glass, reflecting the adjacent trees. It was peaceful, and I quickly became lost in
thought. Inspired by the salmon's upstream battle, I continued my stroll. Fittingly, my walk ended at
the doorstep to the world famous Vancouver Aquarium. Spellbound, I found myself gazing up at the
magnificent bronze Killer Whale, Chief of the Undersea World statue, created by the world–
renowned artist Bill Reid. As I read the inscription, I felt as though my walk had come full circle. It
reads, "The Killer Whale known by the Haida to be chief of the world beneath the sea who from his
great house raised the storms of winter and brought calm to the seas of summer. He governed the
mystical cycle of the salmon and was keeper of all the oceans living

What Is Montana?
Introduction
There are fifty states in the United States of America. Forty–eight of them are contiguous and are
part of North America. Montana is one of the 50 states. Montana is located in the Northwest section
of the United States. Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota are the states that border it.
Canada borders the top of Montana. It's mouthwatering huckleberry pie and cake are two out of
many things it is know for. I chose this state because it contains lots of beautiful scenery. Montana's
outstanding state profile, awe inspiring geography, and deep history are what separates this state
from the other states.

Water Pollution
Water is not only a way to hydrate, but is crucial to the basis of all life. Washington has many rivers
that run through the state, the most famous being the Columbia River that runs from
Canada through Washington, emptying into the Pacific Ocean. One major tributary of the
Columbia is the Spokane River. This river is one hundred and eleven miles long and is fed by
Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. When a water source gets contaminated it can cause shifts in an
ecosystem. Recently, there have been advocates trying to improve the quality of water in the river.
Mining companies, such as Bunker Hill Mine, have dumped their waste from their factories into the
river. The high levels of toxins in the water led to laws being enforced to halt more pollutants from
entering the water. These pollutants have altered the ecosystem making the fish unhealthy to eat as
well as limiting recreation in the water.
The Spokane River is a treasure of eastern Washington. People have used the waters for recreation,
such as boating, rafting and fishing. Inhabitants that use the river depend on the waters to be clean
and clear, and currently is a stunning blue glass color. The waters have been polluted by industries
and their waste ("Understand My Waste"). In the 1970's Bunker Hill Mine used the water to dump
their wastes from the smelting and purification of ores (Bell). Situations such as this created a huge
spike in heavy metals within Lake Coeur d'Alene which ran off into the Spokane River. The most

Upon seeing this report. Mr. Braun summoned Lance Whiting for an explanation.
Braun: What's the story on Ashton? It didn't have a loss the previous year, did it?
Whiting: No, the Ashton facility has had a nice profit every year since it was opened six years ago.
But Ashton lost a big contract this year.
Braun: Why?
Whiting: One of our national competitors entered the local market and bid very aggressively on the
contract. We couldn't afford to meet the bid. Ashton's costs––particularly their facility expenses––
are just too high. When Ashton lost the contract, we had to lay off a lot of employees, but we could
not reduce the fixed costs of the Ashton facility.
Braun: Why is Ashton's facility expense so high? It–s a smaller facility than either Pocatello or
Idaho Falls and yet its facility expense is higher.
Whiting: The problem is that we are able to rent suitable facilities very cheaply at Pocatello and
Idaho Falls. No such facilities were available at Ashton, so we had them built. Unfortunately, there
were big cost overruns. The

Some tree species were only prevalent at the perennial site compared to the non–perennial site.
Higher abundance on cottonwoods could reflect their deeper rooting systems and thus more reliable
water resources. A study conducted on Pacific Northwest Trees showed that the larger trees were
reliant on greater amounts of stored water for higher levels of photosynthesis, furthermore there
were different percentages of water use per tree species (Phillips, 2003). This supports our findings
as some tree species were host to more mistletoe than others. This may due to the different amount
of water the trees absorb and use. Larger trees such as Populus fremontii. Tree specific factors may
affect susceptibility as well. Sycamores are proposed to have defenses that form physical/chemical
barriers prevent colonization parasites, this may explain why we saw little to no mistletoe on
Planatus wrightii's at either site (Grime and Pearce 1995). Furthermore alders have an important
symbiotic relationship with Frankia alni, a nitrogen fixing bacteria that receives sugar from the tree
in return for the nitrogen it supplies (Porter 2013). This explains why we saw the most even

Westward Expansion
While the western United States was growing rapidly, the means on transportation across the great
plains was a very long and dangerous trek. With the growing desire for western settlements, the
Transcontinental Railroad would offer a much faster and safer means of travel to the western states.
The railroad would also be capable of carrying goods to and from the West.
There were some primary motives for the United States Government to promote and be so largely
involved with the building of the railroad. First, it was the age of Manifest Destiny, "a term coined
by journalist John O'Sullivan in 1845, was a driving force in 19th century America's western
expansion. It was the notion that Americans and the institutions of the U.S. are morally superior and
therefore Americans are morally obligated to spread those institutions" ("Westward Expansion").
The building of the Transcontinental Railroad would be an enormous step in this process, making
the settlement of the west much more inviting to people, as well as making the process of western
expansion much faster.
Secondly, the fact of being able to send troops much quicker to the Western states. There was great
conflict between settlers and the Native Americans once the flood of people began. This brought the
need for the troops to protect the settlers, and eventually, to force the rightfully resilient Native
Americans onto reservations. Third, as California continued to grow in population, the United States
Government was

More Than A Game By John Swales
More Than A Game
Nearly every American knows the popular song, "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." It has
commemorated the national sport baseball for many years, drawing fans from coast to coast creating
a unique community that is truly American. However this song fails to portray the true nature of the
sport. If we don 't win, yes it is a shame, but it 's not just about one, two, three strikes and you 're
out, it 's about learning to play the game; and not just the game of baseball but the game of life.
There are countless numbers of communities similar to the baseball community that operate in
unique ways, yet meet the many of the same criteria. According to linguist, John Swales' theory on
discourse communities, "there are common goals, participatory mechanisms, information exchange,
community specific genres, a highly specialized terminology and a high general level of expertise."

while maintaining high ethical standards. My employees actively sought my guidance for
professional development, as well as personal life choices. Often, they relied on me as a reliable,

success was well documented, I was no longer achieving the meaningful fulfillment I once
experienced in my career. The industry had taken a shift in focus that minimized the opportunity to
develop employees in favor of reducing costs by utilizing part time staff to increase profitability.
Ultimately, the direction was to eliminate, or at a minimum, substantially reduce, the most fulfilling
aspect of my position. Interestingly, the company leadership did me a favor in that I felt compelled
to identify what was lacking in my professional life leading me to act on filling that void. In the end,
the industry's shift prompted a life changing event for me, to pursue a career in social services,

Sacagawea History
Idaho has a fascinating history. From the state's Native American history and settlers to World War
II, and the states 1900's disaster, Idaho has an exciting past. Plus Idaho has the best potatoes!
In August 1805, four European white men on horses arrived in what's now the Idaho–Montana
border. The men were Captain Meriwether Lewis, John Shields, George Drouillard, and Hugh
Mc'Nell. All these people belonged to a group of 59 explorers called the Corps of Discovery. In
what is now South Dakota a Shoshone woman, Sacagawea, became part of the expedition.
Corps of Discovery met a traveling band of Shoshones before they entered Idaho. Sacagawea

In 1890, The Idaho Territory had enough people to become a state. The new state had problems and
the miners faced a hard life. Many jobs were dangerous and people earned very little money. Miners

1892, union miners in the Coeur d'Alene region went on strike. The strike became so violent that
Governor Frank Steunenberg brought in troops. Governor Frank Steunenberg broke the strike. Many

Increase Of Regulation For Winter Road Maintenance
Increase in Regulation for Winter Road Maintenance Everyone has dealt with an experience where
they are driving down a "cleaned" road, and all of a sudden, they hit an ice patch. The winter road
crews have been over the roads, but nevertheless, the road is not safe. The lane will be clean. Then,
a block later, it will be covered in ice. In the city of Nampa, this situation tends to be encountered
more than necessary. When someone travels from Canyon County to Ada County, there is a clear
distinction between the levels of care. Roads in Boise are usually better taken care of compared to
the morning traffic in Nampa. The Treasure Valley needs to increase road maintenance in the winter
creating more mandates for care and researching for a better understanding and process for salting
and clean up. For Idaho, statistics show the negative repercussions and dangers of weather–related
accidents. One study was completed by the United States Department of Transportation showing
how weather relates to car accident statistics (U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway
Administration). In the United States yearly, about 22% of crashes and 16% of fatalities were based
off weather related incidents such as slick roads and bad conditions (U.S. Department of
Transportation Federal Highway Administration). Over a ten year study, 33% of weather related
accidents were based off of snow, sleet, and ice conditions (U.S. Department of Transportation
Federal Highway Administration).

The Interior Of A Formal Courtroom
The interior of a formal courtroom glistens in a sepia hue. The bench overlooks the room, with
herringbone flags representing their country. A bar harshly splits the room while oak tables rot as
they pay homage to the solemn victors. Dueling jury boxes frame the edges of the room– their
panels demarcated by sharp bezels and accompanied by stern lecterns varnished an undistinguished
gray.
Mirroring benches lay vacant, with the exception of two overwrought neighbors and one anguished
woman holding her 6–month–old child. A corona of incandescence emphasises the indents
separating each weathered stave along the wall. Walking sounds can be heard through the left wall
of the courtroom.
[Two men enter through the leftmost door, Mark Wallace, J.D. and Stanley Kowalski. They are
about thirty years old, sharply dressed in black formalwear. Mr. Wallace carries an ebony suitcase
overflowing with folders and documents. Stanley, guided by the hand of Mr. Wallace, stands
shoulder to shoulder with his defence attorney. Seconds later the other side of the room mirrors the
men's actions; Blanche, a fragile woman in her thirties, enters the room accompanied by her
prosecutor, Ella Stone. Mrs. Stone withers with age as she struggles to cling on to the many folders
in–hand. Judge Ruth Anthony sits herself center bench, accompanied by Bailiff Scott. She scans the
room from Stanley to Blanche, briefly stopping to inspect her carefully crafted mahogany gavel.]

popular majors at BSU are composed of health professions, business, management, marketing,

Polarized Tribes : Colorado, Wyoming And Montana
In the writing piece written by Philip Deloria, titled "Polarized Tribes: Colorado, Wyoming and
Montana," the author argues that those three states are very dissimilar when comparing them to their
other state counterparts. With the imagination and identity that surrounds these three areas, I argue,
even though Philip Deloria states that those places are quite different from the other states in the
western region, that they are not all that contrasting when examining the other states and their
specific religious patterns. One point that the author brings up about these three states being
different is that Colorado, for instance, really does not boast any type of religion. With all three
states housing various outdoor recreation spots, like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, some
residents in these states have their religion with the outdoors, through vigorous activities such as
rock climbing and hiking. Even though they do not have a God in this type of religion or faith, I
believe that if this provides a tie for these individuals, they can classify it as their own type of
worship. In the beginning of our class, Religion in the American West, we were all asked to write
down what religion meant to us. I remember scribbling down that religion is worshipping some form
of God, and basically stating that that is the only avenue to practice a religion. Now, after almost
finishing up this course, I challenge my old beliefs on religion and realize that these residents in

in some cases agencies had completed creative accounting to justify their budget request's linkage

the benchmarking system, (b) to facilitate educational reform, (c) to plan budget and funding

priorities as directed in the Benchmark (Little 1998). Even after its many issues, both Oregon Shines
I and II acted as a state–wide unified vision which was able to generate valuable information for the
state legislators, state agencies and non–profit organisations. This kind of information in turn helped
legislators enact important legislations, formulate policies and directed state agencies to contribute
towards the state's development (Lewis 2000; Ford 2000). Most importantly, one of the major
reasons of Oregon Shines' success was its ability to receive patronage of different governors as the

Racial Diversity Located in the Northwestern part of the United States near the Canadian border,
Idaho Falls numbers for racial diversity are lacking. Predominantly ninety percent of the race is

Starting a Family with Surrogacy Adoptions in Madison, ID
In today's world, there are a number of ways a couple may start a family. Traditionally, the only
options were natural conception or adoption. However, parents may now start a family using
surrogacy adoptions in Madison, Idaho. Surrogacy adoptions in Madison, Idaho provide a number of
benefits to the parents. However, the process is lengthy and a number of legal issues are involved,
therefore, having competent legal counsel to assist parents through this process is essential.
During a surrogacy adoption, another woman will carry the couple's child to term on their behalf.
Often, the couple's genetic material will be injected into the uterus of this woman; therefore, the
child she carries may not be biologically related to her. Surrogacy adoption provides parents
struggling with infertility the opportunity to bring a biological child into the world. In other cases,
donor eggs or sperm may be used.
To begin the surrogacy adoption process, the parents should consult an adoption attorney who has
experience in these unique adoptions. The attorney will be able to help the parents find a suitable
surrogate with a clean health record, and will draft the necessary contracts for the parties to sign.
With the assistance of the attorney, the parents will maintain

While working in the different schools as a substitute teacher, I learned what schools had the highest
level of students with special needs in spelling, and math. These kids were taken out of class to work
with me on a one on one level helping to try and get them caught up in spelling, sounds and how to
read, as well as math. It was amazing to see kids that were in the second grade not knowing there
sounds or being able to add and subtract math correctly. They were in second grade on a first grade
reading/math levels. I also worked in schools that had the highest level of kids in reading and math.
Why such a split? The way the school are set up, you would actually think that the location of the
schools verses the issues within the school would be flipped. When substituting at the charter school
I found out that they have a higher than average poverty level at their school, where 73% of the
children in the school receive free lunches, which is up from 2013 at 65%. Our neighboring Twin
Falls county school district runs at a 55% with their charter school runs as low as 28% for free
lunches. It is hard to figure out the reasons behind why the poverty levels are so high. This is a
farming community and we have a lot of migrants that come in and work. This is an understandable
issue with the kids needing to learn English, but not for the kids that are non–immigrants, but then
again it

There were no clouds in the sky. Little did I know how much my life, and the inhabitants of my hometown, was going to change. I have a family, and my kids were busy, so i suggested that my wife and i go take a walk since the was such a nice day. We were taking a walk around our general area, when we felt a drop of water. It had come from the upper area of the dam, although we had just assumed it to be droplets of rain. After all, the dam had just been worked on quite recently. • 7. Case Study: Congressman Raul Labrador Over the past few months, I had the opportunity to work for Congressman Raul Labrador. He has no official mission statement or clear cut objectives. That being said, he is a founding member of the Republican House Freedom Caucus, and has a fierce commitment to the caucus's agenda. Congressman Labrador was elected in 2011 after a stint in the Idaho House of Representatives. He has two offices, the office in DC, and another in Meridian, Idaho. In the DC office there are 7 staff members. With one exception, all staff members have been graduated from college for less than 4 years. It is an incredibly young staff, most of which are from Idaho. They all have college degrees but are relatively new to Capitol Hill. The office also has high turnover. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The people that work there are very nice and they are people that I would want to spend time with on the weekends. They are all very fun and witty, but not very professional. On one occasion the Chief of staff told a fellow intern to shut up and never talk again for mentioning a football team loss. On another occasion the intern supervisor unplugged the other intern's computer, in the middle of a project, and giggled as she walked out. This kind of behavior is not profession for students to be in, nor is it an uplifting environment to excel in. In part, the office struggles because it's staff are so young. There is an energy that comes with youth, but in this case there is also an immaturity. The decision making process is emotional, and there is a lot of inconsistency with decisions. The decision maker is the chief of staff, and he has to ok everything before it is done. But there is no black of white answers, and he gives different answers arbitrarily. Our office is structured a bit differently and there is a partial wall that separates us from the chief of staff, so he can hear us and we can hear him. This means that he gives instruction throughout the day over the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Personal Narrative Essay: Planetary Salmon An epic and timeless battle plays out in annually in our beautiful province. From late summer until early winter salmon valiantly fight their way back from the ocean to their home rivers where they first hatched. This is the stuff of legends and folklore! It is difficult to articulate the impact a single fish has had on the people of BC, but suffice it to say the salmon run is unquestionably a marvel of nature. From Adams River to Vancouver Island's Goldstream Park, there are countless rivers, parks and public places to view the eternal cycle of spawning. Closer to home, in the heart of Stanley Park, sits a unique demonstration stream, winding its way from the Vancouver Aquarium to Coal Harbour. Easily missed, yet well worth a visit, the BC Hydro Salmon Stream Project features a self– guided walking tour and presents an incredible opportunity to learn more about a natural salmon stream, healthy habitat and the salmon life cycle. Like the battle–weary salmon, the interpretive signage is slightly battered, bruised and weather–beaten. However, the salmon stewardship message is clear. As I stopped near the fish ladder, a ... Spellbound, I found myself gazing up at the magnificent bronze Killer Whale, Chief of the Undersea World statue, created by the world– renowned artist Bill Reid. As I read the inscription, I felt as though my walk had come full circle. We have not found him yet and I think that they are going to give up hope. He's been gone for 5 weeks and we are already at the Platte River.I can only imagine what he looked like: blonde and brunette hair but mostly brunette about 3". I cauked my wagon and lost one day of food supplies that we couldn't afford to lose. The leader said that it's okay and we will try to get some food from Shoshone indians considering that they are very nice. Later that night we found a Shoshone camp, it took awhile for everyone to warm up to each other. Their leader Black Dog was a very good leader we made some exchanges with them because they gave us a lot of food they even let us eat supper with them. We all sat around the campfire telling stories Black Dog's son black bear had very good stories about the other pioneers along the trail, he said that many of them tried to kill them so that they could steal their food and animals, but ... • 19. Water Pollution Water is not only a way to hydrate, but is crucial to the basis of all life. Washington has many rivers that run through the state, the most famous being the Columbia River that runs from Canada through Washington, emptying into the Pacific Ocean. One major tributary of the Columbia is the Spokane River. This river is one hundred and eleven miles long and is fed by Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. When a water source gets contaminated it can cause shifts in an ecosystem. Recently, there have been advocates trying to improve the quality of water in the river. Mining companies, such as Bunker Hill Mine, have dumped their waste from their factories into the river. The high levels of toxins in the water led to laws being enforced to halt more pollutants from entering the water. These pollutants have altered the ecosystem making the fish unhealthy to eat as well as limiting recreation in the water. The Spokane River is a treasure of eastern Washington. People have used the waters for recreation, such as boating, rafting and fishing. Inhabitants that use the river depend on the waters to be clean and clear, and currently is a stunning blue glass color. The waters have been polluted by industries and their waste ("Understand My Waste"). In the 1970's Bunker Hill Mine used the water to dump their wastes from the smelting and purification of ores (Bell). Situations such as this created a huge spike in heavy metals within Lake Coeur d'Alene which ran off into the Spokane River. The most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whiting: No, the Ashton facility has had a nice profit every year since it was opened six years ago. But Ashton lost a big contract this year. Braun: Why? Whiting: One of our national competitors entered the local market and bid very aggressively on the contract. We couldn't afford to meet the bid. Ashton's costs––particularly their facility expenses–– are just too high. When Ashton lost the contract, we had to lay off a lot of employees, but we could not reduce the fixed costs of the Ashton facility. Braun: Why is Ashton's facility expense so high? It–s a smaller facility than either Pocatello or Idaho Falls and yet its facility expense is higher. Whiting: The problem is that we are able to rent suitable facilities very cheaply at Pocatello and Idaho Falls. No such facilities were available at Ashton, so we had them built. Some tree species were only prevalent at the perennial site compared to the non–perennial site. Higher abundance on cottonwoods could reflect their deeper rooting systems and thus more reliable water resources. A study conducted on Pacific Northwest Trees showed that the larger trees were reliant on greater amounts of stored water for higher levels of photosynthesis, furthermore there were different percentages of water use per tree species (Phillips, 2003). This supports our findings as some tree species were host to more mistletoe than others. This may due to the different amount of water the trees absorb and use. • 27. Westward Expansion While the western United States was growing rapidly, the means on transportation across the great plains was a very long and dangerous trek. With the growing desire for western settlements, the Transcontinental Railroad would offer a much faster and safer means of travel to the western states. The railroad would also be capable of carrying goods to and from the West. There were some primary motives for the United States Government to promote and be so largely involved with the building of the railroad. First, it was the age of Manifest Destiny, "a term coined by journalist John O'Sullivan in 1845, was a driving force in 19th century America's western expansion. It was the notion that Americans and the institutions of the U.S. are morally superior and therefore Americans are morally obligated to spread those institutions" ("Westward Expansion"). The building of the Transcontinental Railroad would be an enormous step in this process, making the settlement of the west much more inviting to people, as well as making the process of western expansion much faster. Secondly, the fact of being able to send troops much quicker to the Western states. There was great conflict between settlers and the Native Americans once the flood of people began. This brought the need for the troops to protect the settlers, and eventually, to force the rightfully resilient Native Americans onto reservations. As a successful retail store manager for a large wireless company, I made a good living, successfully developed leadership skills in my staff, often resulting in their promotion, achieved exceptional record breaking results in every opportunity, and bringing out the best in the employees that I led, while maintaining high ethical standards. My employees actively sought my guidance for professional development, as well as personal life choices. Often, they relied on me as a reliable, caring, resource for them to achieve personal and individual goals. Although my professional success was well documented, I was no longer achieving the meaningful fulfillment I once experienced in my career. The industry had taken a shift in focus that minimized the opportunity to develop employees in favor of reducing costs by utilizing part time staff to increase profitability. Ultimately, the direction was to eliminate, or at a minimum, substantially reduce, the most fulfilling aspect of my position. Interestingly, the company leadership did me a favor in that I felt compelled to identify what was lacking in my professional life leading me to act on filling that void. In the end, the industry's shift prompted a life changing event for me, to pursue a career in social services, providing me with the opportunity to assist the individual in a more in–depth, purposeful manner. Polarized Tribes : Colorado, Wyoming And Montana In the writing piece written by Philip Deloria, titled "Polarized Tribes: Colorado, Wyoming and Montana," the author argues that those three states are very dissimilar when comparing them to their other state counterparts. With the imagination and identity that surrounds these three areas, I argue, even though Philip Deloria states that those places are quite different from the other states in the western region, that they are not all that contrasting when examining the other states and their specific religious patterns. One point that the author brings up about these three states being different is that Colorado, for instance, really does not boast any type of religion. With all three states housing various outdoor recreation spots, like Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, some residents in these states have their religion with the outdoors, through vigorous activities such as rock climbing and hiking. Even though they do not have a God in this type of religion or faith, I believe that if this provides a tie for these individuals, they can classify it as their own type of worship. In the beginning of our class, Religion in the American West, we were all asked to write down what religion meant to us. This kind of information in turn helped legislators enact important legislations, formulate policies and directed state agencies to contribute towards the state's development (Lewis 2000; Ford 2000). Most importantly, one of the major reasons of Oregon Shines' success was its ability to receive patronage of different governors as the administration changed with the election cycle. Though racial diversity is increasing, it is at a very slow pace. I was shocked when I saw the number of the amount of blacks in Idaho Falls. Less than one percent of the people where black.
