Pros And Cons Of Closing Guantanamo Bay
Guantanamo Bay is a U.S Government funded maximum security prison for the most dangerous
detained terrorists in the world. There has been information extracted from the detainees that is
invaluable to National Security and for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Closing Guantanamo bay
due to its "questionable" practices would open up a global security threat if the government set the
prisoners free. The purpose of writing on this topic is to support why Guantanamo Bay should not
be closed down. The intelligence collected from the prisoners at the base has saved and will
continue to save thousands of military personnel and civilian lives. The notion that the government
is wasting American tax dollars on funding the base is wrong simply for the

Pros And Cons Of 9/11
Rough Draft The worst day in all of American history is September 11, 2001. The attacks on the
Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the White House were unexpected. Fortunately for America, the
airliner aimed at the White House was forced down by the heroic actions of a few passengers into a
field in Pennsylvania. With a total death toll after 9/11 being 3,597 and 10,000 others were injured.
also, Bin Laden gave the Al Qaeda leader the orders to attack America.
According to History.com, "at 8:45 am on a clear Tuesday morning, a Boeing 767 crashed into the
North Tower. It left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110 story skyscraper". Also,
according to History.com, "18 minutes after the first 767 hit the North Tower, a second 767 ... Show

The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt
The Muslim Brotherhood has been part politics in Egypt for more than 80 years. It was originally
formed by Hassan al–Banna in 1928. The Muslim Brotherhood is a combination religious and
political group based on the belief that Islam is not just a religion, but a way of life. It dictates a
separation from secularism, returning to the rules of the Quran based on healthy families,
communities, and states. The brotherhood focused on two key principles. They are (1), the
introduction of the Islamic Sharia or way of life or principles, by controlling the affairs of state and
society, and (2), working "to achieve unification of the Islamic countries and states, mainly among
the Arab states, and liberating them from foreign imperialism." The group concentrated on religion,
education and social services. As its membership grew, it moved into the political sphere, organizing
protests against the Egyptian government. The Brotherhood is the oldest and largest opposition
group in Egypt. It has had widespread support among Egypt's middle classes, and its members
control many of the country's professional organizations. Up until 2011, under Egyptian law, it
banned all parties based solely on religion. Sayyid Qutb, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in
the 1950s and 1960s, developed the doctrine of jihad, and the radical group Hamas. It is believed to
be an offshoot of the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt's Islamists and the Muslim
Brotherhood have a history of perseverance.

Interrogator Jose Rodriguez
In this video we hear from the man who was in charge of interrogating the person who planned 9/11.
Jose Rodriguez, CIA interrogator, tells about how Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would not give in to
their interrogation so they used "enhanced interrogation techniques." Waterboarding, giving the
sensation of drowning, was used to try and break Mohammed. Little the they know it would take
over 180 times of "being drowned" to finally speak up. Mohammed never thought he was going to
die. He was allowed to sleep and drink ensure. Rodriguez thinks that all of the deprivation,
waterboarding and manipulation finally cracked Mohammed. Rodriguez also ordered the
destruction of the videos of the interrogation for the safety of the interrogators and their families.

Al Qaeda And The Islamic Terrorist Organization
Progress can be seen as moving forward or the onward movement towards a destination or a
particular goal through any means necessary. This has shaped the mindsets of humans, countries,
and terrorist organizations. Whether it is progress that comes from active, exemplary methods and
actions or that from negative, violent, and unclean methods. The terrorist group al–Qaeda has one
primary goal, to eliminate all US influence in the world and has pursued that goal through negative,
violent means. However, the efforts of Al Qaeda towards eliminating all U.S. influence around the
world have been unsuccessful because of the obstacles posed by the U.S. military and its
counterterrorism efforts. Al Qaeda, the Islamic terrorist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it was the U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf war that drove Osama to use al–Qaeda as
a base for eliminating all U.S. influence around the world.
Determined on removing all U.S power through force and violence, Osama and the members of Al
Qaeda issued Fatwahs(a ruling on a point of Islamic law) against America and its citizens. From
1992 to 1993 Osama issued various fatwahs against U.S soldiers stationed in Somalia, Yemen, the
Arabian peninsula, Saudi Arabia that stated that all American troops should be attacked. Proceeding
that, Osama issued new fatwas based upon religion, that it was Islamically proper to kill all
nonbelievers, even if others were killed by such actions and the reward was paradise. Many terrorists
claimed to be fighting in the name of the Quran and justified their killings upon the fact that it is
Islamically proper for a person to kill his enemies and those of God.On the 23rd of August 1996,
Osama bin Laden took a step in making his dream a reality when he issued a Fatwa declaring war
against the United States. After 1996, Fatwas aimed at American civilians were released and stated
that Muslims should kill American civilians anywhere, they are found in the world.Osama expressed
his utter hatred for the United States.

Human Torture SHOULD Be Allowed Essay
Torture has long been a controversial issue in the battle against terrorism. Especially, the
catastrophic incident of September 11, 2001 has once again brought the issue into debate, and this
time with more rage than ever before. Even until today, the debate over should we or should we not
use torture interrogation to obtain information from terrorists has never died down. Many questions
were brought up: Does the method go against the law of human rights? Does it help prevent more
terrorist attacks? Should it be made visible by law? It is undeniable that the use of torture
interrogation surely brings up a lot of problems as well as criticism. One of the biggest problems is
that if torture is effective at all. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After the incident, another question was brought forth: Whether it was time the government decided
that desperate times called for desperate measures, and that torture interrogation was in need.
According to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, torture is: Any act by which severe
pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes
as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or
a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him
or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering
is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other
person acting in an official capacity. (85) And it is also prohibited. But the truth is, even when being
outlawed, torture is still used silently, especially in the interrogation of terrorists. Did it have any
effect on the long–term battle against terrorism of the U.S and the world? According to John
McCain, it is a no. In "Torture's Terrible Toll", he wrote about his own experience: I was once
physically coerced to provide my enemies with the names of the members of my flight squadron,
information that had little if any value to my enemies as actionable intelligence. But I did not refuse,
or repeat my insistence that I was required under

Summary: The Benefits Of Torture
"In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity"(Tzu). What is sought after most in any sort of
conflict is an advantage to win or to prevent further loss in life. Pieces of information can be
obtained in a various number of ways, each approach determining the likelihood of a response and
its overall accuracy. Recently the idea of torture has been brought to the table whether it is
beneficial and once again Americans are split on this topic. Although in the past, many thought
torture was effective since many believed the idea of pain lead to an absolute truth, in reality torture
as a whole does not increase the chance to obtain time sensitive information, whether the abuse is
physical or psychological. Terrorists are universally hated, some more than others, like of Khalid
Sheikh Mohammed, the architect for the September 11th attacks on the world trade center and
former leader of al–qaeda. In 2003 he was captured by the CIA and ISI in Pakistan hiding in

The people working in that Branch and in most of the country believed these "enhanced
interrogation" techniques worked. Well after 6 years of gathering intelligence regarding those
practices a 525 page report by the Senate Select Intelligence Committee revealed several major
things one of which is that "The use of the CIA's enhanced interrogation techniques was not an
effective means of obtaining accurate information or gaining detainee cooperation." this is key in
regards to the use of torture to obtain intel, because if specialized committees like the one
mentioned above spent 40 million dollars to gather data on whether these acts of brutality were
useful and concluded they weren't then it would only drive home the point that alternative measures
of interrogation were more beneficial in providing that vital information that would allow for an

Terrorist Theories Of Al Qaeda
Do you remember where you were on Tuesday, September 11, 2001? Well if you do, then this
should be a memory refresher, but if you don't, heres something for you to learn. There were four
airlines that were hijacked by the Islamic Extremist Group, Al–Qaeda. Al–Qaeda had planned to use
a suicide attack against the United States. At 8:45 am, two of the four hijacked planes crashed into
the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, the third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington DC and
the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. This day, was going to change America
forever. Since the terrorist attacks, there has been many conspiracy theories that put fourth to what
"actually happened". As these conspiracies come, they range from planes not even hitting the Twin
Towers but bombs that destroyed those buildings to the government knowing and going along with
the plan of attack. Even though that the government says they made up the attack now, the 9/11
attack did happen how we thought it happened because of Islamic Extremist group thinking that
America is weak, thousands of people died and we ended up going to war to find Osama Bin Laden.
One might say that the government did not plan the 9/11 attack. Heres what the Islamic Extremest
group is and what their purpose for their attack was. Islamic Extremist group consist of two aspects
of extremist, interpretations and pursuits of the Islamic ideology. Though the group doesn't entail

The Abolition Of Torture Analysis
This paper addresses one of the most abiding and heated controversies surrounding the topic of
torture and morality. Put simply, this controversy concerns the issue of whether under extreme and
exceptional circumstances, a government agency should be legally permitted to use torture as a
means of punishment or extracting information. According to Oxford Dictionary, torture is defined
as "The action of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do
or say something". On one side of the controversy, a significant community of experts argue that a
government should be able to use torture, but only under very particular and exceptional
circumstances, such as a terrorist attack, when thousands of innocent lives ... Show more content on

Claiming that "[i]t would be a gross dereliction of duty for any government not to keep Khalid
Sheikh Mohammed isolated, disoriented, alone, despairing, . . . in order to find out what he knew
about plans for future mass murder" (6). In concluding this thought, Krauthammer argues that the
only time aggressive forms of interrogation techniques such as torture should be allowed are in the
case of Mohammed and the al Qaeda, or in similar situations that include a terrorist who may hold
vitally valuable information. In his article entitled The Abolition of Torture, Sullivan responds to
Krauthammer's endorsement of torture "under strictly curtailed conditions" (1). Sullivan objects to
this proposed allowance of torture under certain circumstances as "an abandonment and violation of
America's constitutional principles that uphold the country as a defender of human rights" (3), and
argues in favour of the unconditional ban of torture, referring to it as "a terrible and monstrous

The Security Has Become A Hot Button Issue
National security has become a hot button issue here in the United States. Rather than representing
other nations, opposing forces represent different ideologies. Enemy personnel may appear as
anyone or come from anywhere, even from the United States. These enemies have a potential to
acquire dangerous weapons and cause detrimental amounts of damage to our nation. To save the
country from these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific
evidence, torture is ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized
nation disagree with torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be
allowed. Here is the reason, Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make
an entryway for an assault. Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors for
another strike later on. Through the use of torture, the CIA gained useful data by interrogating two
terrorist group leaders, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, both of them gave significant
data, after agents used torture. (Gordon n.p.) Zubaydah showed the way to Khalid Mohammed, who
was found to be the mastermind behind 9–11 attacks. (Gordon n.p.) The usage of torture helped gain
useful information about terrorist organizations accountable for the assaults and it opened a way to
stop possible assaults driven by Al–Qaida later on. (In –Debate n.p.) Present and former U.S.
authorities have claimed they found key data

The Involvement Of Psychologists And The American...
In my analysis paper I will be discussing the issues in the involvement of psychologists in
interrogations. Many of the current issues resort to an ethical or unethical question in regards of the
American Psychological Association's Code of Conduct. Are the practices of using inhumane
techniques to gain enemy intelligence ethical or unethical? The use of psychologists in military
interrogations has led to crossing the lines of being inhumane, which is against the Code of
Conduct. This has been explained in many incidents in today's interrogations against foreign
enemies and detainees. The current controversy of this issue is not only a debate psychologically,
but this also involves the government and politics surrounding the issue. There ... Show more

You further begin using techniques that are against your ethics to yield the enemy of hiding
information. How would you feel? What would you do? Let the enemy contain his intelligence, or
interrogate against your ethics, using techniques that are well known for accomplishing your tasks?
Psychologists have been involved in military interrogations for an extended time. Psychologists
have been used in many different ways in the military, such as questioning detainees, enemy
combatants, and even our own military members to decide whether they would fit into certain career
fields. The current debate on psychologists involved with military interrogations is focused on
whether this activity is violating codes. Many people are arguing the fact that these interrogations
can be abusive towards detainees and unethical while a vast selection of people also agree that many
psychologists stay within their code and regulations and maintain a safe approach. Psychologists
have a fine line when it comes to breaking the guidelines and staying in them. There are many
different issues to bring up on this topic and I will be discussing both point of views related to
military interrogations.
In the current issue of the involvement of psychologists in military interrogations there is a conflict
in taking a side of either being ethical or unethical. Prominent members of the American
Psychological Association (APA) have denounced such practices unethical. In the APA's Code of

Special Registration Report
Such violations of human rights have not only taken place in the international arena, but also at the
domestic level as well. After the events of 9/11, the US saw a sharp increase in discriminatory racial
profiling and restriction of civil liberties for its citizens (Welch, 2004, pp 5). An example of this can
be seen with the Special Registration Program issued by the Justice Department in 2002 that applied
to non–immigrant male visitors from certain countries that were associated with terrorism. The
program, also known as the Domestic Call–in Registration, has involved policies such as
fingerprinting, photographing and the interviewing of more than 46,000 students, tourists and
businessmen. Further investigation into the policy has concluded that the program was characterised
by cultural insensitivity and unprofessional conduct (Welch, 2004, pp 6). I would also note that the

Through a number of laws aimed largely at deterrence after the 9/11 attacks, such as instituting
severe penalties for aircraft hijacking, the US government has helped protect American citizen's
rights to life and property. For example, in 1973 legislation was introduced that made boarding–gate
security measures mandatory throughout America and as a result, US hijack attempts dropped from
31 to 3 and 3500 pounds of high explosives, 2000 guns and 23,000 knives and other lethal weapons
were found (Wilkinson, 2006, pp 128). Although such legislation was put in place before the War on
Terror, similar legislation has been passed post–2001 and so the findings can be extrapolated to
suggest that stricter security measures employed in the War on Terror have helped to protect
civilians from further attack and in turn protect their basic human rights such as the right to

September 11th, 2001, the United States of America was attacked on its soil when alleged Al–Qaeda
members hijacked four passenger planes, Boeing 757s. Two planes flew into the North and South

remaining plane was possibly targeting the White House or the Capitol but was unsuccessful. People
all over America felt an utter shock and disbelief after this tragic event as people demanded

the government was behind it all. Americans believe that the U.S. government knew in advance of

The FBI then traced down the hijackers to discover and confirm that they had been living in the
United States for several months leading up to the attacks on September 11, 2001. The luggage of
the discovered hijacker's leader, Mohammed Atta, was never loaded on Flight 11 and contained
specific handwritten instructions that told him and his men to be well dressed for the mission and to
recite religious verses from the Koran to bring courage as they completed the mission. If they
followed these instructions, they would receive heavenly rewards afterwards. The evidence
discovered by the FBI supports that Al–Qaeda was targeting the United States and was behind the
attacks as they prepared for months. Al–Qaeda strived to make not only the United States suffer, but
the nation as a whole. As the government blamed Al–Qaeda for the events on September 11th,
conspiracies disagreed and said that the Bush administration was behind it all due to the
procrastination of a commission led by Bush to investigate the events. Fourteen months after the
attacks on September 11th, Bush's creation of the special commission was no longer delayed. In
November of 2002, Bush named Henry Kissinger as the chairman of this commission. Problems

Essay on The Decision to Become a Suicide Bomber
Although journalist Dexter Filkins has spent years covering the war in Iraq, he still appears unsure
as to what exactly motivates a suicide bomber to embrace jihad. Citing a specific example in his
book, The Forever War, Filkins poses the question, "The most intriguing part of Ra'ad's story was
unknowable. How did an English–speaking, American–loving, hair–gel–wearing lawyer who'd
walked among the bikinis of Santa Monica come to blow himself up in Iraq?" (177). While this
particular quandary may appear unknowable to Filkins, the motivation behind suicide bombers'
actions may be more obvious than he thinks. It is no secret that American culture differs immensely

Could it be this bitterness towards American culture that motivates a suicide bomber to fulfill his
jihadist destiny? Although Qutb certainly was open about his dislike of America, it seems far more
likely that modern jihadists have an ulterior motive that involves America's foreign policy rather
than its culture. An interesting revelation is made concerning jihadist motivation by John Farmer in
his book, The Ground Truth. Farmer notes that Osama bin Laden's initial concerns were focused in
the Middle East. The continual involvement by the United States in Middle Eastern affairs is what
seems to have put him over the edge. Farmer quotes a specific interview given by bin Laden that
clearly outlines the source of his hatred, "America continues to claim that it is upholding the banner
of freedom and humanity... while these deeds that they did [the dropping of the atomic bombs on
Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the imposition of sanctions on Iraq], you would not find that even the
most ravenous of animals would descend to" (15–16). Sharing bin Laden's sentiment is his
counterpart Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who actually lived in America at one point. Interestingly, his
time spent in America doesn't seem to be the driving factor behind his feelings. Farmer, quoting the
9/11 Commission, writes, "KSM's animus toward the United States 'stemmed not from his
experiences there as a student, but rather from his violent

The Fallacy of the Ticking Time-Bomb Scenario
The ticking bomb scenario is a fallacy. You have a guy in custody. How do you "know" that there is
a ticking bomb about to detonate? How do you "know" that this is the person who has that
information? Ultimately you can't "know" those things. You may highly suspect that someone has
information, so then you green light waterboarding suspects. How do the authorities know you
haven't planted a bomb in downtown Chicago about to go off? They'll have to torture you just to
make sure. In at least one case, they were also "interrogating" the children of the detainee they
thought had information. One Bush Administration memo said that it would be acceptable to crush
the testicles of children in custody if they thought they could get information. So the Bush
Administration authorized torture of children to get information out of their parents who were
suspected of having information.
The ticking bomb scenario makes for an interesting hypothetical scenario, but it has no connection
to the real world. The psudo–connection the Bush Administration and most torture proponents have
been giving about "actionable intelligence" resulting from torture is the Bush Administration's claim
that waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed led to the foiling of the library tower attack. But that
makes no sense. The feds foiled the library towers attack in 2002. KSM wasn't captured until March
of 2003. How could anything he said have led to the foiling of an attack that had been foiled the

The Man Behind The 9 / 11 Attacks Essay
The man behind the 9/11 Attacks who did not receive the same degree of attention of Osama bin

mastermind to some people. The paper's objective is to compile and construct a detailed outline of
Khalid's life and draw a conclusion on motives for his attacking of the United States. This will help
create a profile of behaviors and choices that will allow Counter–Terror to have information to look
for in suspects. Thus, allowing the apprehension of new terrorists. The information that caused this
paper to come into existence was reading the 9/11 Report A Graphic Adaptation, specifically in
Chapter 5, Al Qaeda Aims at the American Homeland. The Original reaction stood out to me for the

Mosques and Kramats
Kramats and mosques are an important part of South African heritage as they represent the second
oldest religion introduced to the country. The first Muslims brought to the cape arrived as Malay
slaves, who practiced their faith in secret until the early 19th century. Prisoners who were fighting
for freedom in the Dutch East Indies were also brought to the Cape. They included teachers of
Islam. Some of these holy men were of noble birth and those who died were buried in shrines
known as Kramats or Mazaars, of which there are about 30 in and around Cape Town. Kramats in
South Africa can be found from Muizenberg to Mowbray, with four on signal hill alone. The most
visited by pilgrims is that of Sheikh Yusuf of Macassar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Torture Is Necessary During Interrogation
After the killing of Osama Bin Laden, former United States Vice President, Dick Cheney,
proclaimed the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" such as waterboarding, against a
terror suspect by the name of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed helped produce intelligence that led the
CIA to Bin Laden. Cheney argued it was a good and legal program and that it was not torture. The
use of EITs has sparked a debate in the public about the means of using torture in order to maintain
security in the nation (Blakeley 544). The discussion about the use of torture in extreme situations
has progressed since 2011 and remains a hot topic today. Torture has been used in many situations
throughout history up to a recent past. It has been done both in secret and out in the open. Although
many people are against torture in any situation, there are some people who justify the act of torture
in extreme situations. The two sides show common ground in valuing human life and that torture is
an extreme solution.
People argue that torture is necessary during interrogation to gain information that will save lives.
There are a wide variety of situations that could happen during the process of interrogation, and not
every circumstance can be prepared for. "Not every situation can be limited to the same set of rules
and regulations" (Jacobs and Newton). The main argument used to justify the ethical use of torture
is a ticking time–bomb situation. If the captured terrorist does not talk, hundreds of people

The Attacks On The World Trade Center
Many people remember where they were, what they were doing, and how they reacted to the news
of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Questions running through people's minds would be who
was responsible for this, and how could we let something this dreadful happen to this great nation of
ours. About 14 years ago the United States was not involved in any type of war, believe it or not,
ISIS did not exist, and people were not aware of the Islamic terrorist group, al–Qaeda, and their
leader Osama bin Laden. The United States' surveillance state was much smaller than what it is
today, and airport security was extremely lenient. September 11th, 2001 marks a gruesome day in
history that greatly impacted and still influences the decisions that are made in the United States
today. It was a beautiful, sunny morning at the World Trade Center in New York when things went
from good to bad extremely quick. At 8:46 AM American Airlines flight 11, coming from Boston,
crashed into the side of the north tower. This was the first of four planes that were hijacked on 9/11.
Most people who witnessed the first collision thought it was only a small commuter plane that
accidentally crashed. However, seventeen minutes later, the second plane, United Airlines flight
175, also coming from Boston, crashed into the south tower. Everyone knew at this point that this
was no accident. The United States was now under attack. Each tower was greatly damaged, and

The Language Of War Is Killing Analysis
Every War Has a Reason
Did you ever take responsible for what you did? Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is claim himself as
American enemy in his article of "The Language of War is killing". He takes responsibility for the
terrorist activity in 9/11, but he doesn't take himself like a hero. He uses the title "The Language of
War is Killing" to show the disagreement between him and America. According to Mohammed the
war between American and Arab Muslim countries are never stop until the U.S.A stay away form
Arab countries. Mohammed uses the same language to fight with America, but different style.
Mohammed gave us an example in his article of George Washington and Osama Bin Laden. He
sates George Washington is a hero for most Americans, and Osama is considered as terrorist, but for
the most Muslim people Osama is hero that fighting for his independence. Mohammed has a point
in his writing. America is oppressed and Arrested many Muslim people from Arab countries without

telling us killing innocent people is right to just tell for the American government to stay way form
the foreign policy of Arab countries. Did you think killing civil people could stop America from

any time at any place, so the government of the country would not allow bad thing happened in his

The Torture Of Torture Hitchens Summary
In Hitchens's story, the majority of his detail is dedicated to his personal experience. Hitchens was
brave enough to actually forbearance the torture of waterboarding. "I was very gentle yet firmly
grabbed from behind, pulled to my feet, pinioned by my wrist (which were then cuffed to a belt),
and cut off from sunlight by having a black hood pulled over my face." (Hitchens, page 617). At this
time, the trained men are starting to put Hitchens in the first steps of the torture. "Arms already lost
to me, I wasn't able to flail as I pushed onto a sloping board and positioned with my head lower than
my heart." (Hitchens, page 617). Hitchens has been placed into position to where he cannot move,
or try to fight the integrator's, to start the torturing. This is when the water starts getting poured onto
his face. The fear of drowning is an understatement when it comes to water boarding, because
drowning is actually taking place. He began to hold is breath, for as long as he could, before having
to exhale. With exhaling comes inhaling, and when he inhaled, the hood pulled over his face began
to suction to his face. "The inhalation brought the damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge,
wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly clamped over my face." (Hitchens, page 618).
Basically, what he is saying is that the suctioning of the hood is making it even harder to attempt to
breath. With all of this being said, Hitchens did not last long before using the pre–arranged

Compare And Contrast 9/11 And Pearl Harbor
9/11 and Pearl Harbor were two national disasters that affected the United States greatly. The Pearl
Harbor attack was located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and happened on December 7,1941 at
7:00 am when the air force was out doing drills. The 9/11 attack then was in Manhattan, New york
on September 11, 2001 at about 8:00 am. These two attacks on our nation happened years apart, yet
are so similar. Unlike 9/11, Pearl Harbor was quick lasting only 11 minutes plus the bombing. The
reason for the attack was for the Japanese to defeat our Navy so that we wouldn't slow their land
takeover plan down. The Japanese attack caught us off guard , but we still ended up fighting and
putting our best efforts forward. The Japanese started their attack with bombing our resources (air
force base). Then the Japanese bombed our naval fleet. This was the most devastating. 9/11 on the
other hand was a pure act of terror. On September 11th 4 planes were hijacked in the air. While 2
planes went to Manhattan to take down the twin towers the other 2 went to our nation's capital to
wreak havoc. Thankfully only 3 of the 4 planes went on with their plans. The last plane did not
make it to the Pentagon (it's original target). Fearlessly the passengers of the last plane broke into
action and sacrificed their life to save the lives of those in the pentagon. Forever we are thankful.
Even though these two attacks were fairly different, they show great strength and heroism from the

The criteria for deportation and detention that covers the plotters or the actual implementers of the

The law should be rational to include and look for ways of accommodating such cases. Question 2
Establishment of strong and efficient defensive measures influences the selection of sites to target
by the terrorists. Good defense also enables terrorists to craft other method new methods to attack
their targets, but it does not totally prevent the terrorists from committing their terror attacks.
Terrorists are groups that wage war against the weak points of the society, and they are never out to
fight but to cause destruction. Terrorists attack the innocent people as a way of articulating their
ideology and communicating to the government. Realization of security beep sets terror to a less
secure place where they lodge their attacks. However, security effectiveness does not prevent
terrorists from committing their terror attacks. Most of the people members of these groups are even
ready to die, and they will use any method to cause destruction. Some will even swallow bombs and
go to public places where a lot of people gather (Kamien G. D, 2006). The terrorist also comes up
with other methods of administering their wrath when they realize that the security is tight. These
methods include the use of weapons that can easily get ported without causing much attention like
guns instead of bombs and also recruiting members of the target country to their group. With the
innovations, the terrorists can commit to series of attacks on

Persuasive Essay On Torture
The practice of torture by United States officials has become one of the most controversial elements
of military history. The debate of its use in gathering intelligence has been particularly prevalent
since the Bush administration. Most recently, a detailed and graphic scene of torture was presented
in the movie Zero Dark Thirty. Proponents for the use of torture state that it is necessary for
intelligence gathering and that ethics should be waved aside. Opponents argue that it is not
becoming of American practices and it is not a reliable source for intelligence gathering. The public
debates on this issue have forced policy makers and military officials to look at whether or not
torture, particularly waterboarding, should be legal. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It stated, "With respect to waterboarding, the opinion concluded that while the technique presented a
substantial question under the statute, the authorized use of waterboarding...would not violate the
federal criminal prohibition against torture" (U.S. Cong., 2009). This conclusion was primarily
drawn from the proposed idea that waterboarding is not considered to be painful and does not have a
lasting physical or psychological impact (U.S. Cong., 2009). This simulated session of drowning
arguably only causes a momentary state of distress. In fact, it is even practiced on U.S. service
members in training. These considerations certainly establish a compelling argument for the use of
waterboarding as a means to collect important information in a combat environment. There are,
however, compelling arguments against the use of any form of torture. One of the more prominent
arguments is that it does not provide officials with any actual intelligence. A former FBI
interrogator, Ali Soufan, presents a logical argument that waterboarding does not work. He explains
that two terrorists, Abu Zubaydah and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were waterboarded 83 and 183
times respectively (Collins, 2014). It is hard to imagine that anything beyond the first few attempts
would have truly provided any form of actionable intelligence. At this point in their torture, these
two terrorists may only provide false information that may seem important. In their eyes, this would
provide the quickest

Waterboarding History
The history of waterboarding goes back a lot further than most people even realize. The technique
commonly referred to as "waterboarding" was first documented in the 14th century, but has been
used on and off around the world since before the Spanish Inquisition1. The term waterboarding is
actually a reference to two different techniques, with one of them being the more commonly used
today. The first technique involves the pumping of water directly into a person's stomach. The other
technique is the one most people think of when they hear the word waterboarding. This technique
involves the placement of a cloth material over the mouth and a steady stream of water poured into
the throat. Those steps lead to the person being interrogated experiencing a feeling as if they are
drowning. This often leads to the unconsciousness of the interrogated. The person is awoken and the
cycle is continued until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Waterboarding is known and used, because of the effectiveness at which it causes the person severe
mental suffering in an effort to gain intelligence. The fact that it meets the definition of the term
torture, means that it would be illegal under the same reasoning as torture is illegal under the
standards of International and U.S. law. Furthermore, one of the biggest arguments in favor of
waterboarding after the events of 9/11, was the fact that the U.S. was at "war" with terrorists. So
therefore it was ok to waterboard terrorists to find out information. However, Article 2 of the UN
convention against torture states, there are no circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a
threat of war, that can be used as a justification for torture. This means that no matter what the
circumstances surrounding the reason behind someone being tortured, the act is still illegal by
international law and therefore illegal by U.S. standards as

Inhumanity Of Torture
Inhumanity of Torture "I struggled without success to breathe I thought I was going to die. I lost

obtain information. The detainees are deprived of their dignities, beaten with approved methods of
physical contact, and threatened. Torture isn't justified by any means. It affects people physically
and mentally, it's inhumane, and against the 8th Amendment. Torture isn't justified because it affects
people mentally and physically. Often detainees' fears are used against them. " The use of insects

The Eighth Amendment states, " excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed,
nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." Although it's unclear on how to measure the cruelty
on a punishment, many torture methods are undoubtedly, cruel and unusual. For example, rectal
feeding and rehydration. "According to a CIA cable released in the report, his "'lunch tray'
consisting of hummus, pasta with sauce, nuts and raisins was 'pureed and rectally infused'"." (Olivia
Laughland) Detainees, Majid Khan and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were both subjected to rectal
feeding. Mohammed was also subjected to rectal rehydration without any medical purpose. The
definition of cruel is to willfully cause pain or suffering to others, and the definition of unusual is
not commonly occurring or done. With that being said, those acts of torture are unquestionably,
considered cruel and unusual being they both are causing pain in an uncommon way as a form of
punishment. On the other hand, some believe torture is justified. They may argue that it's important
to do whatever it takes to get the information needed, or to save the lives of others. It could also be
viewed as justice for the crimes that have been committed. An argument some have is that the ends
justify the means. The end does not justify the means. It's about being the better person and having
everyone feel safe and secure in a place where

Guantanamo Bay Case Study
The Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility is in southeastern Cuba, on the coast of Guantanamo Bay.
The base opened in 1903 and covers 45 square miles. The base houses detainees in the war on terror
since the September 11 attacks and ensuing military operations in Afghanistan. There are 41
detainees there as of January 2018 (Guantanamo Bay naval, 2018). Some issues to consider when
analyzing whether to keep Guantanamo Bay open are the valuable intelligence learned from
interrogating the detainees and the remote location of the facility. Several other topics to consider
are the cost of running the facility and the legitimacy of the interrogation tactics.
The first pro to examine when considering if Guantanamo Bay should remain open is the valuable
intelligence that interrogators gain from the detainees. Guantanamo houses high–value detainees,
like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect of the September 11 attacks. Mohammed has a
mechanical engineering degree from North Carolina A&T University. There is a long list of

It is expensive to maintain a facility like Guantanamo on foreign soil. The cost to run Guantanamo
in 2015 was approximately $445 million. The annual cost per detainee at Guantanamo is $10
million. The annual cost of a federal maximum–security prison is $34,000. The annual cost savings
of moving detainees to a domestic facility are $65–85 million (the cost, 2017). The potential money
saved from housing those detainees in the United States could go towards other domestic policies
such as the military budget, education, and jobs. The cost of keeping Guantanamo Bay on foreign
soil is an area that one could argue is a reason to close the detention facility. The money saved could
help stimulate the American economy. A second issue to consider is the interrogation tactics used at

Terrorist Attacks On The United States
September 11th, 2001, alleged Al–Qaeda members attacked the United States of America with four

Trade Center in New York, one plane flew into the Pentagon, and the remaining plane was possibly
targeting the White House but was unsuccessful. People all over America felt an utter shock and
disbelief after this tragic event as people demanded answers. After the terrorist attacks, a portion of
Americans started to believe in conspiracies proving the government was behind it all. To add,
Americans also believed that the U.S. government knew in advance of the terrorist attacks on
September 11th due to the time between the attacks and the Bush administration's attempt to
investigate, the National Security Association's lack of investigation of suspicious phone calls, and
the odd "collapse" of World Trade Center Seven. However, the government tried to counter attack
with the points that Al Qaeda was behind the attacks on September 11th, Khalid Mohammed was
the mastermind behind September 11th, and that debris hit World Trade Center Seven. After the
tragedy, the U.S. government believed that Al–Qaeda hijacked the planes used in the attacks. During

The Use Of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques ( Eits )
"The one lesson we 've learned from history is that we have not learned any of history 's lessons"
(Unknown Author, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the use of Enhanced Interrogation
Techniques (EITs) such as "waterboarding" and extraordinary rendition (aka "black sites") by CIA
agents for American intelligence interests and to analyze the drastically apposing views of the
legalities, morality, and effectiveness of these methods. Is the CIA's use of EITs and extraordinary
rendition equivalent to torture, and therefore, acts in violation of international law? The definition of
"torture" under statute 18 U.S.C. 2340 states, "torture" means an act committed by a person acting
under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering
(other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody
or physical control" (United States Code, 2011). This definition expands with specific identifying
characteristics of an act and varies to include humiliation of an individual. Of course, pain and
suffering is a subjective experience. The worlds historical practice of "torture" reinforces lessons
that human's imaginative capacity for inflicting pain and terror on our fellow human is disgracefully
boundless; yet, parallel behaviors of violence and humiliation reemerge with disturbing regularity
(Smith, 2013). The events on September 11, 2001 (9/11) left the nation in disbelief that American

To try and prevent these acts from occurring governments worldwide have developed laws. The
Physicians for Human Rights states, "Freedom from cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment is a
fundamental human right established in international law". In 2009, the United Nations met to
discuss torture and other cruel treatments and punishment. This became known as the UN
Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
During this Convention, they established many laws, in Part One, Article Two it states, "No
exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political
instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture". Even though
there is international law, torture is practiced in over 100 countries. These countries often justify this
doing by saying they need to extract confessions, identify terrorists, and obtain intelligence critical
to preventing attacks. The UN does not tolerate any torture, no matter the circumstances. When
Guantanamo Bay was found of violating human rights and international law, President Bush insisted
that "all detainees were well cared for and that none of the enhanced interrogation techniques
employed on some prisoners were torturous". According to US officials the use of these techniques

Torture Is Torture
Torture is something all over the world that inflicts punishment and pain on people. The fear of
drowning is something a lot of people have. With this being said, this story is based on a torture
method called waterboarding. Waterboarding was thought of by members of the Special Forces. It
was used in a training called SERE, which means Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape. The
main things needed for this torture is water, and a board of course. This is where it gets the name
waterboarding. The goal of this paper is to insure people that doubt waterboarding is a torture,
because waterboarding is a torture. In "Believe Me, It's Torture", Christopher Hitchens describes
waterboarding in order to convince the readers on why it is torture.
In Hitchens's story, the majority of his detail is dedicated to his personal experience. Hitchens was

CIA Interrogation Tactics
The US Senate Intelligence Committee released a report in 2014 about the interrogation tactics used
by the CIA during George Bush's Presidency after 9/11. Composed mainly by Democrats, it is seen
as containing a strong bias which led to the CIA being depicted as cruel and unjust, and guilty of
illegal torture. Coined the "torture report," it's unsurprising that there are a few who are wary of the

Pros And Cons Of Closing Guantanamo Bay

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of Closing Guantanamo Bay Guantanamo Bay is a U.S Government funded maximum security prison for the most dangerous detained terrorists in the world. There has been information extracted from the detainees that is invaluable to National Security and for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Closing Guantanamo bay due to its "questionable" practices would open up a global security threat if the government set the prisoners free. The purpose of writing on this topic is to support why Guantanamo Bay should not be closed down. The intelligence collected from the prisoners at the base has saved and will continue to save thousands of military personnel and civilian lives. The notion that the government is wasting American tax dollars on funding the base is wrong simply for the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Pros And Cons Of 9/11 Rough Draft The worst day in all of American history is September 11, 2001. The attacks on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the White House were unexpected. Fortunately for America, the airliner aimed at the White House was forced down by the heroic actions of a few passengers into a field in Pennsylvania. With a total death toll after 9/11 being 3,597 and 10,000 others were injured. also, Bin Laden gave the Al Qaeda leader the orders to attack America. According to History.com, "at 8:45 am on a clear Tuesday morning, a Boeing 767 crashed into the North Tower. It left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110 story skyscraper". • 3. The Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt The Muslim Brotherhood has been part politics in Egypt for more than 80 years. It was originally formed by Hassan al–Banna in 1928. The Muslim Brotherhood is a combination religious and political group based on the belief that Islam is not just a religion, but a way of life. It dictates a separation from secularism, returning to the rules of the Quran based on healthy families, communities, and states. The brotherhood focused on two key principles. They are (1), the introduction of the Islamic Sharia or way of life or principles, by controlling the affairs of state and society, and (2), working "to achieve unification of the Islamic countries and states, mainly among the Arab states, and liberating them from foreign imperialism." The group concentrated on religion, education and social services. As its membership grew, it moved into the political sphere, organizing protests against the Egyptian government. The Brotherhood is the oldest and largest opposition group in Egypt. It has had widespread support among Egypt's middle classes, and its members control many of the country's professional organizations. Up until 2011, under Egyptian law, it banned all parties based solely on religion. Sayyid Qutb, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1950s and 1960s, developed the doctrine of jihad, and the radical group Hamas. It is believed to be an offshoot of the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood. Egypt's Islamists and the Muslim Brotherhood have a history of perseverance. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jose Rodriguez, CIA interrogator, tells about how Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would not give in to their interrogation so they used "enhanced interrogation techniques." Waterboarding, giving the sensation of drowning, was used to try and break Mohammed. Little the they know it would take over 180 times of "being drowned" to finally speak up. Mohammed never thought he was going to die. He was allowed to sleep and drink ensure. Rodriguez thinks that all of the deprivation, waterboarding and manipulation finally cracked Mohammed. • 5. Al Qaeda And The Islamic Terrorist Organization Progress can be seen as moving forward or the onward movement towards a destination or a particular goal through any means necessary. This has shaped the mindsets of humans, countries, and terrorist organizations. Whether it is progress that comes from active, exemplary methods and actions or that from negative, violent, and unclean methods. The terrorist group al–Qaeda has one primary goal, to eliminate all US influence in the world and has pursued that goal through negative, violent means. However, the efforts of Al Qaeda towards eliminating all U.S. influence around the world have been unsuccessful because of the obstacles posed by the U.S. military and its counterterrorism efforts. However, it was the U.S. involvement in the Persian Gulf war that drove Osama to use al–Qaeda as a base for eliminating all U.S. influence around the world. Determined on removing all U.S power through force and violence, Osama and the members of Al Qaeda issued Fatwahs(a ruling on a point of Islamic law) against America and its citizens. From 1992 to 1993 Osama issued various fatwahs against U.S soldiers stationed in Somalia, Yemen, the Arabian peninsula, Saudi Arabia that stated that all American troops should be attacked. Proceeding that, Osama issued new fatwas based upon religion, that it was Islamically proper to kill all nonbelievers, even if others were killed by such actions and the reward was paradise. Many terrorists claimed to be fighting in the name of the Quran and justified their killings upon the fact that it is Islamically proper for a person to kill his enemies and those of God.On the 23rd of August 1996, Osama bin Laden took a step in making his dream a reality when he issued a Fatwa declaring war against the United States. After 1996, Fatwas aimed at American civilians were released and stated that Muslims should kill American civilians anywhere, they are found in the world.Osama expressed his utter hatred for the United States. • 6. Human Torture SHOULD Be Allowed Essay Torture has long been a controversial issue in the battle against terrorism. Especially, the catastrophic incident of September 11, 2001 has once again brought the issue into debate, and this time with more rage than ever before. Even until today, the debate over should we or should we not use torture interrogation to obtain information from terrorists has never died down. Many questions were brought up: Does the method go against the law of human rights? Does it help prevent more terrorist attacks? Should it be made visible by law? It is undeniable that the use of torture interrogation surely brings up a lot of problems as well as criticism. One of the biggest problems is that if torture is effective at all. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the incident, another question was brought forth: Whether it was time the government decided that desperate times called for desperate measures, and that torture interrogation was in need. According to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, torture is: Any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. (85) And it is also prohibited. But the truth is, even when being outlawed, torture is still used silently, especially in the interrogation of terrorists. Did it have any effect on the long–term battle against terrorism of the U.S and the world? According to John McCain, it is a no. In "Torture's Terrible Toll", he wrote about his own experience: I was once physically coerced to provide my enemies with the names of the members of my flight squadron, information that had little if any value to my enemies as actionable intelligence. • 7. Summary: The Benefits Of Torture "In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity"(Tzu). What is sought after most in any sort of conflict is an advantage to win or to prevent further loss in life. Pieces of information can be obtained in a various number of ways, each approach determining the likelihood of a response and its overall accuracy. Recently the idea of torture has been brought to the table whether it is beneficial and once again Americans are split on this topic. Although in the past, many thought torture was effective since many believed the idea of pain lead to an absolute truth, in reality torture as a whole does not increase the chance to obtain time sensitive information, whether the abuse is physical or psychological. Terrorists are universally hated, some more than others, like of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect for the September 11th attacks on the world trade center and former leader of al–qaeda. The people working in that Branch and in most of the country believed these "enhanced interrogation" techniques worked. Well after 6 years of gathering intelligence regarding those practices a 525 page report by the Senate Select Intelligence Committee revealed several major things one of which is that "The use of the CIA's enhanced interrogation techniques was not an effective means of obtaining accurate information or gaining detainee cooperation." this is key in regards to the use of torture to obtain intel, because if specialized committees like the one mentioned above spent 40 million dollars to gather data on whether these acts of brutality were useful and concluded they weren't then it would only drive home the point that alternative measures of interrogation were more beneficial in providing that vital information that would allow for an upper ... • 8. Terrorist Theories Of Al Qaeda Do you remember where you were on Tuesday, September 11, 2001? Well if you do, then this should be a memory refresher, but if you don't, heres something for you to learn. There were four airlines that were hijacked by the Islamic Extremist Group, Al–Qaeda. Al–Qaeda had planned to use a suicide attack against the United States. At 8:45 am, two of the four hijacked planes crashed into the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center, the third plane hit the Pentagon in Washington DC and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. This day, was going to change America forever. Since the terrorist attacks, there has been many conspiracy theories that put fourth to what "actually happened". As these conspiracies come, they range from planes not even hitting the Twin Towers but bombs that destroyed those buildings to the government knowing and going along with the plan of attack. Even though that the government says they made up the attack now, the 9/11 attack did happen how we thought it happened because of Islamic Extremist group thinking that America is weak, thousands of people died and we ended up going to war to find Osama Bin Laden. One might say that the government did not plan the 9/11 attack. Heres what the Islamic Extremest group is and what their purpose for their attack was. • 9. The Abolition Of Torture Analysis This paper addresses one of the most abiding and heated controversies surrounding the topic of torture and morality. Put simply, this controversy concerns the issue of whether under extreme and exceptional circumstances, a government agency should be legally permitted to use torture as a means of punishment or extracting information. According to Oxford Dictionary, torture is defined as "The action of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something". On one side of the controversy, a significant community of experts argue that a government should be able to use torture, but only under very particular and exceptional circumstances, such as a terrorist attack, when thousands of innocent lives ... Claiming that "[i]t would be a gross dereliction of duty for any government not to keep Khalid Sheikh Mohammed isolated, disoriented, alone, despairing, . . . in order to find out what he knew about plans for future mass murder" (6). In concluding this thought, Krauthammer argues that the only time aggressive forms of interrogation techniques such as torture should be allowed are in the case of Mohammed and the al Qaeda, or in similar situations that include a terrorist who may hold vitally valuable information. In his article entitled The Abolition of Torture, Sullivan responds to Krauthammer's endorsement of torture "under strictly curtailed conditions" (1). Sullivan objects to this proposed allowance of torture under certain circumstances as "an abandonment and violation of America's constitutional principles that uphold the country as a defender of human rights" (3), and argues in favour of the unconditional ban of torture, referring to it as "a terrible and monstrous ... • 10. The Security Has Become A Hot Button Issue National security has become a hot button issue here in the United States. Rather than representing other nations, opposing forces represent different ideologies. Enemy personnel may appear as anyone or come from anywhere, even from the United States. These enemies have a potential to acquire dangerous weapons and cause detrimental amounts of damage to our nation. To save the country from these extreme life threatening circumstances, where there is clear and specific evidence, torture is ought to be reasonable so as to spare innocent lives. Most people in a civilized nation disagree with torture. However, in compelling and threatening circumstances it may be allowed. Here is the reason, Many terrorist organizations take advantage of the situation and make an entryway for an assault. Without the usage of torture, it would take extra time and open doors for another strike later on. Through the use of torture, the CIA gained useful data by interrogating two terrorist group leaders, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, both of them gave significant data, after agents used torture. (Gordon n.p.) Zubaydah showed the way to Khalid Mohammed, who was found to be the mastermind behind 9–11 attacks. (Gordon n.p.) Many of the current issues resort to an ethical or unethical question in regards of the American Psychological Association's Code of Conduct. Are the practices of using inhumane techniques to gain enemy intelligence ethical or unethical? The use of psychologists in military interrogations has led to crossing the lines of being inhumane, which is against the Code of Conduct. Psychologists have been involved in military interrogations for an extended time. Psychologists have been used in many different ways in the military, such as questioning detainees, enemy combatants, and even our own military members to decide whether they would fit into certain career fields. The current debate on psychologists involved with military interrogations is focused on whether this activity is violating codes. Many people are arguing the fact that these interrogations can be abusive towards detainees and unethical while a vast selection of people also agree that many psychologists stay within their code and regulations and maintain a safe approach. Psychologists have a fine line when it comes to breaking the guidelines and staying in them. There are many different issues to bring up on this topic and I will be discussing both point of views related to military interrogations. • 13. Special Registration Report Such violations of human rights have not only taken place in the international arena, but also at the domestic level as well. After the events of 9/11, the US saw a sharp increase in discriminatory racial profiling and restriction of civil liberties for its citizens (Welch, 2004, pp 5). An example of this can be seen with the Special Registration Program issued by the Justice Department in 2002 that applied to non–immigrant male visitors from certain countries that were associated with terrorism. The program, also known as the Domestic Call–in Registration, has involved policies such as fingerprinting, photographing and the interviewing of more than 46,000 students, tourists and businessmen. Further investigation into the policy has concluded that the program was characterised by cultural insensitivity and unprofessional conduct (Welch, 2004, pp 6). Although such legislation was put in place before the War on Terror, similar legislation has been passed post–2001 and so the findings can be extrapolated to suggest that stricter security measures employed in the War on Terror have helped to protect civilians from further attack and in turn protect their basic human rights such as the right to ... Essay on The Decision to Become a Suicide Bomber Although journalist Dexter Filkins has spent years covering the war in Iraq, he still appears unsure as to what exactly motivates a suicide bomber to embrace jihad. Citing a specific example in his book, The Forever War, Filkins poses the question, "The most intriguing part of Ra'ad's story was unknowable. How did an English–speaking, American–loving, hair–gel–wearing lawyer who'd walked among the bikinis of Santa Monica come to blow himself up in Iraq?" (177). Could it be this bitterness towards American culture that motivates a suicide bomber to fulfill his jihadist destiny? Although Qutb certainly was open about his dislike of America, it seems far more likely that modern jihadists have an ulterior motive that involves America's foreign policy rather than its culture. An interesting revelation is made concerning jihadist motivation by John Farmer in his book, The Ground Truth. Farmer notes that Osama bin Laden's initial concerns were focused in the Middle East. The continual involvement by the United States in Middle Eastern affairs is what seems to have put him over the edge. Farmer quotes a specific interview given by bin Laden that clearly outlines the source of his hatred, "America continues to claim that it is upholding the banner of freedom and humanity... while these deeds that they did [the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the imposition of sanctions on Iraq], you would not find that even the most ravenous of animals would descend to" (15–16). Sharing bin Laden's sentiment is his counterpart Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who actually lived in America at one point. Interestingly, his time spent in America doesn't seem to be the driving factor behind his feelings. Farmer, quoting the 9/11 Commission, writes, "KSM's animus toward the United States 'stemmed not from his experiences there as a student, but rather from his violent ... • 18. The Fallacy of the Ticking Time-Bomb Scenario The ticking bomb scenario is a fallacy. You have a guy in custody. How do you "know" that there is a ticking bomb about to detonate? How do you "know" that this is the person who has that information? Ultimately you can't "know" those things. You may highly suspect that someone has information, so then you green light waterboarding suspects. How do the authorities know you haven't planted a bomb in downtown Chicago about to go off? They'll have to torture you just to make sure. In at least one case, they were also "interrogating" the children of the detainee they thought had information. One Bush Administration memo said that it would be acceptable to crush the testicles of children in custody if they thought they could get information. So the Bush Administration authorized torture of children to get information out of their parents who were suspected of having information. The ticking bomb scenario makes for an interesting hypothetical scenario, but it has no connection to the real world. The psudo–connection the Bush Administration and most torture proponents have been giving about "actionable intelligence" resulting from torture is the Bush Administration's claim that waterboarding Khalid Sheikh Mohammed led to the foiling of the library tower attack. But that makes no sense. The feds foiled the library towers attack in 2002. KSM wasn't captured until March of 2003. Torture Is Necessary During Interrogation After the killing of Osama Bin Laden, former United States Vice President, Dick Cheney, proclaimed the CIA's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques" such as waterboarding, against a terror suspect by the name of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed helped produce intelligence that led the CIA to Bin Laden. Cheney argued it was a good and legal program and that it was not torture. The use of EITs has sparked a debate in the public about the means of using torture in order to maintain security in the nation (Blakeley 544). The discussion about the use of torture in extreme situations has progressed since 2011 and remains a hot topic today. Torture has been used in many situations throughout history up to a recent past. It has been done both in secret and out in the open. Although many people are against torture in any situation, there are some people who justify the act of torture in extreme situations. The two sides show common ground in valuing human life and that torture is an extreme solution. People argue that torture is necessary during interrogation to gain information that will save lives. There are a wide variety of situations that could happen during the process of interrogation, and not every circumstance can be prepared for. Hitchens was brave enough to actually forbearance the torture of waterboarding. "I was very gentle yet firmly grabbed from behind, pulled to my feet, pinioned by my wrist (which were then cuffed to a belt), and cut off from sunlight by having a black hood pulled over my face." (Hitchens, page 617). At this time, the trained men are starting to put Hitchens in the first steps of the torture. "Arms already lost to me, I wasn't able to flail as I pushed onto a sloping board and positioned with my head lower than my heart." (Hitchens, page 617). Hitchens has been placed into position to where he cannot move, or try to fight the integrator's, to start the torturing. This is when the water starts getting poured onto his face. The fear of drowning is an understatement when it comes to water boarding, because drowning is actually taking place. He began to hold is breath, for as long as he could, before having to exhale. With exhaling comes inhaling, and when he inhaled, the hood pulled over his face began to suction to his face. "The inhalation brought the damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge, wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly clamped over my face." (Hitchens, page 618). The Pearl Harbor attack was located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii and happened on December 7,1941 at 7:00 am when the air force was out doing drills. The 9/11 attack then was in Manhattan, New york on September 11, 2001 at about 8:00 am. These two attacks on our nation happened years apart, yet are so similar. Unlike 9/11, Pearl Harbor was quick lasting only 11 minutes plus the bombing. The reason for the attack was for the Japanese to defeat our Navy so that we wouldn't slow their land takeover plan down. The Japanese attack caught us off guard , but we still ended up fighting and putting our best efforts forward. The Japanese started their attack with bombing our resources (air force base). Then the Japanese bombed our naval fleet. This was the most devastating. 9/11 on the other hand was a pure act of terror. On September 11th 4 planes were hijacked in the air. While 2 planes went to Manhattan to take down the twin towers the other 2 went to our nation's capital to wreak havoc. Thankfully only 3 of the 4 planes went on with their plans. The last plane did not make it to the Pentagon (it's original target). • 30. Questions On The Usa Patriots Act Question 1 According to the USA patriots act, the practice of detaining aliens that are close associates with terrorism is not a good idea. The decision by the court can be said not to be the best because it included even people who are close to the groups that practise these heinous activities. The criteria for deportation and detention that covers the plotters or the actual implementers of the terrorist act and the other people that are related or are close affiliated with the groups linked to these individuals go against the rights and freedoms of individuals. The action is against the human rights because all individuals have a right not to detention without trial. Detaining people is against their right to liberty, and it must ... Question 2 Establishment of strong and efficient defensive measures influences the selection of sites to target by the terrorists. Good defense also enables terrorists to craft other method new methods to attack their targets, but it does not totally prevent the terrorists from committing their terror attacks. Terrorists are groups that wage war against the weak points of the society, and they are never out to fight but to cause destruction. Terrorists attack the innocent people as a way of articulating their ideology and communicating to the government. Realization of security beep sets terror to a less secure place where they lodge their attacks. However, security effectiveness does not prevent terrorists from committing their terror attacks. Most of the people members of these groups are even ready to die, and they will use any method to cause destruction. Some will even swallow bombs and go to public places where a lot of people gather (Kamien G. D, 2006). The terrorist also comes up with other methods of administering their wrath when they realize that the security is tight. These methods include the use of weapons that can easily get ported without causing much attention like guns instead of bombs and also recruiting members of the target country to their group. • 31. Persuasive Essay On Torture The practice of torture by United States officials has become one of the most controversial elements of military history. The debate of its use in gathering intelligence has been particularly prevalent since the Bush administration. Most recently, a detailed and graphic scene of torture was presented in the movie Zero Dark Thirty. Proponents for the use of torture state that it is necessary for intelligence gathering and that ethics should be waved aside. Opponents argue that it is not becoming of American practices and it is not a reliable source for intelligence gathering. The public debates on this issue have forced policy makers and military officials to look at whether or not torture, particularly waterboarding, should be legal. The ... It stated, "With respect to waterboarding, the opinion concluded that while the technique presented a substantial question under the statute, the authorized use of waterboarding...would not violate the federal criminal prohibition against torture" (U.S. Cong., 2009). This conclusion was primarily drawn from the proposed idea that waterboarding is not considered to be painful and does not have a lasting physical or psychological impact (U.S. Cong., 2009). This simulated session of drowning arguably only causes a momentary state of distress. In fact, it is even practiced on U.S. service members in training. These considerations certainly establish a compelling argument for the use of waterboarding as a means to collect important information in a combat environment. There are, however, compelling arguments against the use of any form of torture. One of the more prominent arguments is that it does not provide officials with any actual intelligence. A former FBI interrogator, Ali Soufan, presents a logical argument that waterboarding does not work. He explains that two terrorists, Abu Zubaydah and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were waterboarded 83 and 183 times respectively (Collins, 2014). It is hard to imagine that anything beyond the first few attempts would have truly provided any form of actionable intelligence. At this point in their torture, these two terrorists may only provide false information that may seem important. In their eyes, this would provide the quickest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Waterboarding History The history of waterboarding goes back a lot further than most people even realize. The technique commonly referred to as "waterboarding" was first documented in the 14th century, but has been used on and off around the world since before the Spanish Inquisition1. The term waterboarding is actually a reference to two different techniques, with one of them being the more commonly used today. The first technique involves the pumping of water directly into a person's stomach. The other technique is the one most people think of when they hear the word waterboarding. This technique involves the placement of a cloth material over the mouth and a steady stream of water poured into the throat. Those steps lead to the person being interrogated experiencing a feeling as if they are drowning. This often leads to the unconsciousness of the interrogated. The person is awoken and the cycle is continued until ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Waterboarding is known and used, because of the effectiveness at which it causes the person severe mental suffering in an effort to gain intelligence. The fact that it meets the definition of the term torture, means that it would be illegal under the same reasoning as torture is illegal under the standards of International and U.S. law. Furthermore, one of the biggest arguments in favor of waterboarding after the events of 9/11, was the fact that the U.S. was at "war" with terrorists. So therefore it was ok to waterboard terrorists to find out information. However, Article 2 of the UN convention against torture states, there are no circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, that can be used as a justification for torture. This means that no matter what the circumstances surrounding the reason behind someone being tortured, the act is still illegal by international law and therefore illegal by U.S. standards as ... It affects people physically and mentally, it's inhumane, and against the 8th Amendment. Torture isn't justified because it affects people mentally and physically. Although it's unclear on how to measure the cruelty on a punishment, many torture methods are undoubtedly, cruel and unusual. For example, rectal feeding and rehydration. "According to a CIA cable released in the report, his "'lunch tray' consisting of hummus, pasta with sauce, nuts and raisins was 'pureed and rectally infused'"." (Olivia Laughland) Detainees, Majid Khan and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, were both subjected to rectal feeding. Mohammed was also subjected to rectal rehydration without any medical purpose. The definition of cruel is to willfully cause pain or suffering to others, and the definition of unusual is not commonly occurring or done. With that being said, those acts of torture are unquestionably, considered cruel and unusual being they both are causing pain in an uncommon way as a form of punishment. On the other hand, some believe torture is justified. They may argue that it's important to do whatever it takes to get the information needed, or to save the lives of others. It could also be viewed as justice for the crimes that have been committed. An argument some have is that the ends justify the means. The end does not justify the means. • 34. Guantanamo Bay Case Study The Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility is in southeastern Cuba, on the coast of Guantanamo Bay. The base opened in 1903 and covers 45 square miles. The base houses detainees in the war on terror since the September 11 attacks and ensuing military operations in Afghanistan. There are 41 detainees there as of January 2018 (Guantanamo Bay naval, 2018). Some issues to consider when analyzing whether to keep Guantanamo Bay open are the valuable intelligence learned from interrogating the detainees and the remote location of the facility. Several other topics to consider are the cost of running the facility and the legitimacy of the interrogation tactics. The first pro to examine when considering if Guantanamo Bay should remain open is the valuable intelligence that interrogators gain from the detainees. Guantanamo houses high–value detainees, like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the architect of the September 11 attacks. Mohammed has a mechanical engineering degree from North Carolina A&T University. The potential money saved from housing those detainees in the United States could go towards other domestic policies such as the military budget, education, and jobs. • 35. Terrorist Attacks On The United States September 11th, 2001, alleged Al–Qaeda members attacked the United States of America with four passenger planes, Boeing 757s. Two planes flew into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York, one plane flew into the Pentagon, and the remaining plane was possibly targeting the White House but was unsuccessful. People all over America felt an utter shock and disbelief after this tragic event as people demanded answers. After the terrorist attacks, a portion of Americans started to believe in conspiracies proving the government was behind it all. To add, Americans also believed that the U.S. government knew in advance of the terrorist attacks on September 11th due to the time between the attacks and the Bush administration's attempt to investigate, the National Security Association's lack of investigation of suspicious phone calls, and the odd "collapse" of World Trade Center Seven. However, the government tried to counter attack with the points that Al Qaeda was behind the attacks on September 11th, Khalid Mohammed was the mastermind behind September 11th, and that debris hit World Trade Center Seven. After the tragedy, the U.S. government believed that Al–Qaeda hijacked the planes used in the attacks. During investigations after the attacks, the FBI found a copy of the Koran–the holy book of Islam–and pilot manuals in a hijacker's car at the Logan International Airport in Boston prior to the attacks. • 36. The Use Of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques ( Eits ) "The one lesson we 've learned from history is that we have not learned any of history 's lessons" (Unknown Author, n.d.). The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the use of Enhanced Interrogation Techniques (EITs) such as "waterboarding" and extraordinary rendition (aka "black sites") by CIA agents for American intelligence interests and to analyze the drastically apposing views of the legalities, morality, and effectiveness of these methods. Is the CIA's use of EITs and extraordinary rendition equivalent to torture, and therefore, acts in violation of international law? The definition of "torture" under statute 18 U.S.C. 2340 states, "torture" means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control" (United States Code, 2011). This definition expands with specific identifying characteristics of an act and varies to include humiliation of an individual. Of course, pain and suffering is a subjective experience. The worlds historical practice of "torture" reinforces lessons that human's imaginative capacity for inflicting pain and terror on our fellow human is disgracefully boundless; yet, parallel behaviors of violence and humiliation reemerge with disturbing regularity (Smith, 2013). This became known as the UN Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. During this Convention, they established many laws, in Part One, Article Two it states, "No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture". Even though there is international law, torture is practiced in over 100 countries. These countries often justify this doing by saying they need to extract confessions, identify terrorists, and obtain intelligence critical to preventing attacks. The UN does not tolerate any torture, no matter the circumstances. • 38. Torture Is Torture Torture is something all over the world that inflicts punishment and pain on people. The fear of drowning is something a lot of people have. With this being said, this story is based on a torture method called waterboarding. Waterboarding was thought of by members of the Special Forces. It was used in a training called SERE, which means Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape. The main things needed for this torture is water, and a board of course. This is where it gets the name waterboarding. The goal of this paper is to insure people that doubt waterboarding is a torture, because waterboarding is a torture. In "Believe Me, It's Torture", Christopher Hitchens describes waterboarding in order to convince the readers on why it is torture. In Hitchens's story, the majority of his detail is dedicated to his personal experience. Hitchens was brave enough to actually forbearance the torture of waterboarding. Hitchens claimed, "I was very gentle yet firmly grabbed from behind, pulled to my feet, pinioned by my wrist (which were then cuffed to a belt), and cut off from sunlight by having a black hood pulled over my face." (Hitchens 617). Trained men are implying the very first steps of waterboarding to Hitchens. He also said, "Arms already lost to me, I wasn't able to flail as I pushed onto a sloping board and positioned with my head lower than my heart." (617). Composed mainly by Democrats, it is seen as containing a strong bias which led to the CIA being depicted as cruel and unjust, and guilty of illegal torture. Coined the "torture report," it's unsurprising that there are a few who are wary of the CIA after reading this. However, it seems that the Senate report misinterpreted the interrogation methods of the CIA as torture.
