World War I Was A War
World War I was a war fought between the Allies and the Central Powers in 1914 through 1918.
This was the first international war in the twentieth century and possibly the most deadliest war
since. Every country was bringing out their finest advanced weaponry and their most strategic
methods to succeed. All of the new advanced weaponry and strategies had a huge impact on the way
the war was fought. The soldiers entered the war with horses and simple rifles, but left the war with
tanks, flamethrowers, machine guns, and even technology like poisonous gas. With all this new
technology impacting World War I, the Allies and Central Powers had to create new
strategies/technology to fight and defend with, the inhumane methods of killing people ... Show

"The first, the front–line trench (or firing–and–attack trench), was located from 50 yards to 1 mile
from the German 's front trench. Several hundred yards behind the front–line trench was the support
trench, with men and supplies that could immediately assist those on the front line. The reserve
trench was dug several hundred yards further back and contained men and supplies that were
available in emergencies should the first trenches be overrun." (Bagget and Jay)
Germans also took advantage of trenches and created multiple types of trenches to help them win
the war. They were ready for any attack/possibility of invasion and were trying to use trenches as
strategically as they could. Trenches would cause damage to nature and the area around it. Imagine
how after the war with trenches, there would be multiple tunnels just engraved in the ground and it
would of destroyed all the life in that soil and around it. During the war, the sides would use artillery
on each other 's trenches so they had to keep on expanding their trenches and making new ones. The
artillery would further destruction and cause many craters around the trenches. The way trenches
would cause people to get sick was probably not a concern to the forces when creating them. Think
about what would happen if soldiers had to sleep and stay in muddy, wet, and dirty trenches twenty–
four–seven. When their clothes got wet they wouldn 't have always have spare uniforms and they
would have to fight with

A Dead Man's Path, By Chinua Achebe
Traditions throughout culture change with time, yet in most instances, a handful of people refuse to
change their methods or beliefs. In "Dead Man's Path," Chinua Achebe creates a changing society
and presents a group of people who are unwilling to change their way of life and adapt. Achebe uses
symbols, allusions, characters, and setting development to give the reader an interpretation of the
changes made throughout society that creates a conflict between a new generation and an old
generation.
In "A Dead Man's Path," Achebe uses the symbols of a path and a barbed wire fence to effectively
capture the conflicting ideas between a new and an old generation. Ani, the village priest, maintains
the importance of this path for he states that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1949, many African nations began their surge for independence, and the native people did not
accept the social modifications forced upon them. The revelation of the setting comes through the
name "Ndume Central School" which is a school located within the African nation of Nigeria (595).
Later, the setting reveals the deep divisions that take place in Africa at the time and allows the reader
to understand why the villagers resists change. The separation between the school and village
symbolizes the division, and this separation captures a modern school fighting a traditional village.
Obi enforces the separation with the moving of the path and states that this new path should "[skirt]
our premises" (597). The setting enhances the conflict between the villagers and Obi because the
Africans at the time resisted the change that Obi enforced within the school. The setting of the
school and village enhances the conflict because the school represents the transformation of society,
while the village captures the stubborn, old way of living.
Achebe produces a theme throughout "A Dead Man's Path" based on the conflict of change through
the path, a barbed wire fence, a biblical allusion, and setting throughout the story. The literary
devices allow for the reader to establish a strong interpretation of the effects of change and how
people within society refuse to adapt from their traditional ways. This story accurately captures the
struggle between a new generation and traditional way of life. Even with forced modernization, the
refusal of change causes conflict in an ever–changing

Barbed Wire Essay
Barbed wire helped revolutionize the West by dividing up the land evenly and cheaply. However,
some people out West found it to be an impediment to moving across wide plains. Cowboys and
Native Americans even came up with a new name for it, Devil's Rope. Joseph Farwell Glidden was
a very influential man in the creation of barbed wire and he forever changed the West and the World.
Barbed wire helped reform the West, but it had to start somewhere. Joseph Glidden saw a wire
attachment at the DeKalb County Fair presented by Henry M. Rose. He used a wood rail and
hammered nails into it to hook onto a fence. Joseph Glidden was there with Jacob Haish, and Isaac
Ellwood. They each saw this and began to talk to Henry about it. Joseph ... Show more content on

Glidden was unsure about this, and he consulted his lawyer about it. The lawyer said to go for it, but
to keep the royalties so he could continue to make . Joseph signed the contract and they went into
business together. Isaac Ellwood partnered up with Glidden so that he could monopolize the barbed
wire industry and focus on the business aspect. His wife also said that Glidden had a better design
than he did, which is part of the reason he partnered with Glidden. Haish was a fierce contender, and
he went to court to see who got the patent, but Glidden eventually won. Joseph Glidden had patents
already, so when he saw the barbed wire, he thought that he could make that, so he did. He was a
very creative man and he was intelligent too. Before he invented barbed wire he invented something
called the land roller. It had the wheels placed in special alignment so that the wheels did not go
over the same land twice. Barbed wire was needed out West, and Glidden's barbed wire was easy to
transport so it went West. The wire migrated West because Texas Longhorn Cattle would trample
and graze on farmer's crops and the farmers hated it. Cattle would also get run over by trains
because they would cross in front of a train on the newly built Transcontinental Railroad. Barbed
was put up to line the railways for miles at a time. Some people like cattle drivers and Native
Americans hated barbed wire so much that they came up with the new name

Similarities Between To Kill A Mockingbird And The Boy In...
How do you keep from giving up when bad things happen? Hope. This may not be a question we get
asked everyday or know an answer to, however, people have dealt with it all through history. From
the holocaust, to african–american rights, you name it, people didn't give up so easily. Anne Frank
didn't give up believing in people while atrocious things were happening to her and her family. Like
so many others, she had hope and despite the outrage as well as fury, she said this: "In spite of
everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."
The Diary of Anne Frank and The Boy in The Striped Pajamas both take place during the holocaust.

Law Enforcement And Justice System
Taylor Krug 4/18/15 LAWS – Capstone Course Prof. Parys ACI In this course we have taken several
field trips in order to get an understanding of the places and operations we have learned of in our
previous courses in this degree program. From the patrol officers making arrests, to the courthouses
where judges give sentencing, to the prisons where guilty parties serve their sentence, the Law
Enforcement and Justice System is a complex yet straightforward system. Meant to grant justice to
the community and prevent further atrocities to justice and peace from occurring. But for whatever
reason, if these duties are broken, then the gears of justice begin to turn, and in so, the many cogs
and belts that run this machine to make it one of the most efficient machines there is. Here we are to
discuss my thoughts of the trip I had taken with the class to the State of Rhode Island's Adult
Correctional Institution or ACI for short. I have visited the Pastore complex where the ACI is held
before in the past, so I am no stranger to the sight of the early 1900's style buildings, the barbed
wires and the armed guards. These men look ready to spring into action, a sight I should be happy to
see but I still always feel just a slight amount on edge. I've always associated the location with a
sense of dread and hopelessness with no way of escape, no chance to see the light of day much like
an animal locked in a cage. A feeling I was sure the inmates were very well acquainted with. But for

Analysis Of The Sapphires
The Sapphires by Wayne Blair is an award–winning film, which explore the lives of four aboriginal
women Gail (Deborah Mailman, Julie (Jessica Mauboy), Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell) and their cousin
Kay (Shari Sebbens) throughout their journey and role in the Vietnam War. A range of film
techniques such as settings, characters, conflicts and symbols are used to explore prejudice towards
their indigenous heritage, with a variety of film techniques as well. In the orientation of the film
Blair uses techniques such as setting, this is an important technique as different settings can either
show a rise of reduction of prejudice towards indigenous people. The film begins in the Australian
outback, where the audience is first introduce to two characters Gail and Kay. The two girls are
cousins and are running across the scene, they make up about 10% of the height of the screen. Blair
uses long–shot contrasting their vulnerability. Establishment shots of the homes and buildings and
also seen, we as the audience understand that the girls are relatively poor as there are many family
member sharing minimal houses, they are living in close proximity to each other and live in a
remote area. Already Blair has expressed the theme of prejudice by depicting the isolation
indigenous people have with white communities. The aboriginal families seem to be living in a
mission environment contrasting that they were disadvantaged from the European settlers. After

Belzec Slave Labor Camp
The extermination and slave labor camp known as Belzec was indeed a nightmare to those who
were held within its walls. Not only were the living conditions of the camp unbearable, but it was
also very deadly. By closely examining Belzec, one gains an understanding of the horrors that
occurred during the Holocaust. Many Jewish people died in Belzec, and the living conditions that
they were forced to endure were intolerable and inhumane. Many innocent people suffered under the
ruthless and cruel conditions in the extermination camp Belzec. Originally a slave labor camp,
Belzec was located in South East Poland. It was said that the camp was responsible for the killing

It was not my intention to work there, and to say nothing of that event which has created a void in
my life which the lapse of four years has done little to fill. Italy is not the same anymore. The
villainous German regime ended four years ago and that's when the Holocaust for ever changed my
life. Being a doctor during the time involuntarily forced me to work at a corrupt concentration camp.
Mournful memories from the past strike me like robbers in the darkness, but they only steel my

Scampering up the dark alleyway, a rotten, stagnant stench of flesh suddenly snaked its way towards
us; he had no idea. We approached the back of the gas chambers, stuck between a barbed wire fence
and solidified wall, our only way was forward. Chilling, thick clouds of fog started to sway our
direction and helped mask us from German soldiers. Faint voices were heard deep further, but we
couldn't identify a thing. The fog slowly receded in the strong gust of wind and what I saw next
plunged riddling fear deep down into my heart. The daunting scene exposed to my eyes startled me;
I never wanted to eradicate a scene from my consciousness so promptly. Endless pits of ravaged
Jewish bodies towered over us and tormenting aromas struck my nostrils. Perpetual confusion
grasped my body as I became frozen in fear. Batel quickly tackled me to the ground as German
soldiers disposing corpses came unquestionably close. I relinquished my sorrowful agony and
focused on the task as it intensified. Increased patrols of German soldiers approached this way and
before they could get any closer, we sprinted behind a shed. The open area was enclosed by barbed
wire fences and I quickly had to rethink my plan. A direct pathway towards the offices appeared and
we decided to follow them back. We hid behind a bin before our final stretch up the stairs and into
my office. As we quietly left the bin and creeped up the uneven

The Problem Of The Infant
Thinking about these events, I developed the following theory on what could have occurred that
evening: At least one adult Bigfoot brought the infant to my house, creating a diversion by
scratching on the front door. Then, with our attention on the front of the house, they crept around to
the back of the house. The adult lifted the infant over the rail, then set it down on the deck. The
infant was too small to reach the carpet without taking one step, in the snow, on the deck, thus
leaving a footprint. It then made its way around the glass table, walking on the carpet, which had
very little snow on it. The infant opened the dog foot tub, consuming the dog food. The parent then
went around to the other side of the deck, reaching over the ... Show more content on

The next morning, I went out before daylight to check the ash for footprints. To my shock and
surprise, it had worked!! In the ash, on the front left corner of my house, was a very clear footprint!
Retrieving my video camera, I began to take video in the low light conditions due to inclement
weather forecast to move in later that morning. The ash had also stuck to the bottom of the Bigfoot's
foot, this a positive print of the foot in the grass. It appeared from the direction of the prints, the
Bigfoot's destination back of the house, possibly to go over the four–foot dog fence into the
backyard. The track was fifteen inches long, with the ball of the foot five and a half inches wide, the
heel of the footprint was four inches wide. Unfortunately, this was an isolated event. The Bigfoot
learn quickly, and though I continued to put the fireplace ash out when the weather would cooperate,
the Bigfoot avoided stepping into the ash.
We would continue to allow the Bigfoot to eat our dog food as the winter wore on. We did this
because, we did not know how the Bigfoot would react if we abruptly removed their food source. In
February of 2011, the Bigfoot began to develop a pattern of visiting approximately once every ten
days. The scratching on the door stopped and the dog food was taken less often. In early March of
2011, my wife threw out about a dozen overripe clementines. She threw them into the dog lot where
the motion sensor flood light was located.

Personal Narrative: The Industrial Trial
Within the last few weeks one of the places that my W203 went that really stood out was the
Industrial Trial that was used to help generate ideas from urban walking. There's quite a bit to see on
the trail but like anything the best parts are closer to the middle. Personally, the one aspect of the
trial that really seemed to catch my eye was the old Elwood Haynes car factory because of its
Kokomo heritage. However, most of the time I would of just said that the place is a giant scrap yard
that needs to be torn down, however, this time around I might think differently.
When we were walking past the factory the first thing that I saw was how many old cars were
parked in front of the building. The stretch of vehicles just seemed to go on forever as someone

This one had a wicked strong smell and I could hear classmates saying "oh my gosh, this really

simply walking past it. Some of the windows in the factory had been broken which reminded me of
how someone who's in prison may try to escape by breaking whatever is in the way in order to get
out; but our class only saw one side of the factory so I can't say for sure how the windows got
broken. Once Dr. White finally decided to turn around and head back to Foster Park, where we had
met up, I tried my best to not let my mind wander. However, it was still hard not to when I was
constantly thinking about all of the other assignments that I had to do later that afternoon. I guess if
everything went the way it was supposed to then life would be boring. When time is made for the
little extra miles then all of the stuff that has to be done down the road gets tossed and that one

Descriptive Essay On The Slaughter House
This is absolutely despicable, these are living breathing creatures.
I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter
house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned
earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see
a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Today
was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of her car and I watched
as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked further behind us
called out something illegible but she took no heed.
Ok... this is it.
I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the lock
and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but
overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest
feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but
held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The animals
raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. My laugh could
be heard even over the frantic mooing of panicked animals.

Theme Of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
An Elegant Flop by Boyne John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971 and studied Literature
at Trinity College, Dublin, and creative writing at the university of East Anglia, Norwich. He has
published nine novels for adults and four for a younger audience, all of which are actually published
in 47 different languages, including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The Boy in The Striped
Pyjamas follows the story of a nine–year–old boy named Bruno who reluctantly moves out his
comfortable home in Berlin to 'Out–With' because of his Father's job. After being rather bored in his
new dismal house, and given no answers by neither his parents nor servants, he is forced to stay with
his older sister who is a constant pain–in–the–neck along with a rather brooding Lieutenant. From
his window Bruno has seen countless men and boys huddled by the barbed wire fence, scared of
something he just doesn't understand, and they were all wearing the same blue striped pyjamas.
After doing a little forbidden exploration, he meets a boy his age but not quite his size. Yet Shmuel
is not here to play with Bruno. John Boyne has demonstrated the theme of the innocence of
childhood in such a way that is rather interesting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

chapters. Bruno never really finds humanity, thus the true horrors of the Holocaust isn't delivered.

also surprising that a weak boy would survive at Auschwitz for a whole year. The areas outside the

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Text Response
Looking over this picture it makes me think of how badly the Jews were treated and how bad they
wanted to escape. Jews had been beaten, neglected, and starved. They were taken away from their
families and some even killed in front of their loved ones. They would not even stay at one place for
very long, they would travel from camp to camp because of the war. It is terrible how they could
take someone because they were a Jew and not even know anything about them. It is not that the
Jew did anything wrong it is simply just because they are Jews.
Secondly, when I look at this picture it makes me think of the movie we watched, "The Boy in The
Striped Pajamas" and the book that we are reading "Night." The person to the left of the picture is
wearing striped clothing, just as the boy was in the movie. Therefore, it is like this man was once
inside one of the concentration camps. In addition, this man appears to be hanging on a barbed wire
fence. It is as if he was trying to escape.
Knowing that in the movie the only thing separation the boy in the striped pajamas from the outside

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Persuasive Essay
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Persuasive Paper
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, written by John Boyne, displays the importance of never letting a
holocaust happen again, and he puts this into words in a sarcastic way. John Boyne's story is a good
teaching tool for the Holocaust, because he displays the overall theme, which is millions of Jews
being put into concentration camps, and killed. He adds details of how Jewish people were treated
horribly, which is what happened in the Holocaust. However what John Boyne fails to do is
elaborate on the little details. For instance, the fence would have been barbed wire and it is not in
the story. Despite the minor details, the story is a good teaching tool for the Holocaust, because it

out that the children she sees through the window are dirty and they look like they have never
bathed in their lives, we know that there is something peculiar going on, which with the other
evidence leads the reader to the conclusion, that the people are part of the holocaust. The way that

jumping over he foal in slow motion. Another big and memorable moment when this black area was
used was when the new soldiers first arrived in France and they entered walking through the black
space and into the wounded soldiers. This action was accompanied with a harsh white light which
made the men look skeletal.
The revolve helped in creating different locations and atmospheres and also helped mark key
moments. One example of this is the ploughing scene. The struggle of the horse was emphasised by
the turning of the revolve as it gave the illusion of a far distance. When Joey got caught on the
barbed wire, the revolve was elevated and raised to a higher level to emphasise it. Another example
of the use of the revolve was during the enlistment scene. As the announcement of war was made,
men were encouraged to sign up along with their horses. The fun and exciting atmosphere at the
funfair was highlighted by the revolvement. Flags were put up on the stage and also in the first few
rows of audience. This made the audience feel involved and echoed how many people were
involved in the war. There was a sense of dramatic irony as we saw the celebration of glory while
one of the main themes of

A Short Story : The Story Of The Story?
"Dinero." Miguel held out his hand. "Quiero que la otra mitad."
Paul glared at him. "Speak English."
"No."
Paul looked at Sherry.
"I think he wants the other half."
"No, tell him he takes us all the way in. Then we give him the rest of the money."
Sherry consulted her phone and told Miguel as best she could.
"No." Miguel scowled. "You pay now."
Paul pointed toward the fence. "All the way."
"I agree. Don't give it him," Sherry said. "It's a scam."
Miguel squared his shoulders. "You pay now," he said again.
What could they do? It was clear this was as far as he was going. But Paul wasn't giving him the
other half of the money either. He had the pistol if Miguel wanted to take things any further.
Finally Paul said, "I'll give you another fifty but we want the water." By the time the sun reached its
zenith it would be scorching.
Miguel grumbled but popped the trunk.
Paul signaled for him to kill the engine.
"No."
But Paul persisted and Miguel did.
Paul and Sherry got out and grabbed the water jugs from the trunk. Paul paid Miguel, who started
the car, the trunk flapping as he tore off, and the Toyota disappeared into the darkness.
*
Well, here we are, Paul thought. "Welcome to Mexico, Sherry."
She didn't say anything.
He nodded toward the barbed wire fence. "I guess we start there."
"What about animals?"
"I've got the pistol."
She frowned but took his arm as they walked to the fence. "So this is it? All we have to do is cross
this fence and we're in Mexico? I'd heard about wading across the Rio Grande."
"That's in Texas." He pushed down on the top barbed wire with his foot and the post gave.
"Careful."
"I can hardly see a thing."
"The horizon's lightening. The sun will be up soon."
"And in the meantime?"
"We'll go slow."
The sun inched up as promised and things seemed more hopeful. They reached a clearing. Thank
God for technology, Paul thought, considering how lost they'd be without their phones. Mexico. A
whole different world. He knew it was violent just inside the border. Drug gangs dominated the
towns, and bandits ruled the roads. Their first requirement would be to find reliable transportation to

This gives a valiant quality to the film and makes the audience feel good, too! The moment the titles
have finished, the music descends from a triumphant melody into eerie gloomy drone. Combined
with the music we are shown a crisp low angle shot of a full moon surrounded by darkness.
Gradually the camera zooms in from the sky and we see an insert shot of the barbed wire fence
giving us an impression of imprisonment. This is followed by an establishing shot of Mr. Tweedy
and his dog. In his hand he is holding a torch and patrolling the area, as they walk towards us we can
hear the 'pitter–patter' of the dog's feet. Followed by, an extreme close up of an ancient rusted
padlock (obviously keeping the fence locked). We are further focused on this as Mr. Tweedy shines
his torch onto the padlock and checks it is securely locked, as he drops the lock we hear the 'clank'
noise it makes as it hits the fence. The focus on the lock reinforces the theme of imprisonment given
previously from the barbed wire. It is also an important element to the film as the audience has to
believe that it is evil to keep chickens locked up. The music has maintained its ominous
characteristics. All these presentational techniques have been used to create the idea that something
important is imprisoned inside the fence; thus

Essay about Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme epitomizes the harsh realities of trench warfare for the Allies and
represents the negligent battle planning and technological advancements that are associated with the
stalemate of World War One. Trench warfare was common across the Western Front, with similar
strategies being employed by both opposing sides. Sir Douglas Haig, one of the British coordinators
for the Somme offensive is blamed with an offensive strategy destined for failure. The British
offensive, an utter failure, resulted in a stalemate, which was common throughout World War One.
The British development of the tank, while it eventually ended the horrendous stalemate, was
ineffectively used during the Somme.

The British went into the Somme with a mixed attack plan, which led to an unsuccessful first assault
resulting in a battle of attrition. The opening day of The Battle of the Somme resulted in near 60,000
casualties for the British, the largest in British military history for a single day. Originally the
Somme was supposed to be a French dominated offensive, however the Germans attacked to the
South in Verdun occupying the majority of French troops. The British were then thrust into control
of the offensive, leaving Sir Douglas Haig and General Rawlinson to arrange an offensive strike
against the Germans. Haig advocated for the use of infantry including foot soldiers as well as
cavalry to lead the offensive. Rawlinson countered with a bite and hold strategy, which involved
fortifying a strong defense and warding off German counter attacks. Rather than committing to one
strategy, the two were combined in order to create a week–long bombardment followed by an
offensive attack on foot.
The offensive was planned on a strict time table, as Haig did not trust those who were considered
volunteer soldiers. This quote demonstrates Haig's disdain towards those who did not have
significant military training, ""He tended to disdain and to suspect the motives of people who could
not properly govern themselves." (Johnson). As a result of his dislike towards the volunteer army he
designed the offensive so

The Was A Death Camp Built During Wwii
Treblinka was a death camp built during WWII, its purpose was for the plan called "OPERATION
REINHARD". Treblinka was built in the year 1942 and was located in a forest Northeast of Warsaw.
Construction work on Treblinka began at the beginning of April 1942, after some German SS–
soldiers came to the village of Poniatowa and inspected the locality. The camp functioned from June
1941 until July 23rd, 1944. The contractors were the German firms 'Schonbrunn' from Leipzig, and
'Schmidt– Münstermann; which had an office in Warsaw. SS–Hauptsturmführer Richard Thomalla
from the SS–Bauleitung Zamosc Supervised the construction work. The workers who primarily built
the Death camp were Jews brought by truck from neighboring villages as well as some Polish
prisoners of war. The construction work took 2 weeks and was completed on June 15th, 1942. The
SS–men and the Ukrainians who supervised the work on the camp, killed a few dozen people every
day. The German who was given command of the death camp first was the Austrian SS–
Obersturmführer, Dr. Irmfried Eberl. Under Command of Dr. Irmfried Eberl where 30 SS–officers
and up to 120 Ukrainian soldiers to guard the camp. Unfortunately for Dr. Irmfried Eberl, he was not
in command for too long. He was relieved of command in August 1942 by Globocnik when

extermination process because Eberl took in too many new transports and they were more than the

Barbed Wires: A Fictional Narrative
The girl walked along the rickety pier, and listened to the creaking of the aged wood against the
soles of her shoes. She stood on the edge of the wharf, and stared into the murky water below her.
Looking down at her reflection, she began to reminisce about her years there as a child. The
abandoned pier was her place to escape; somewhere she could go when she wanted to be alone. I
checked the clock. 11:24pm. Mum and dad would be fast asleep by now. I quietly opened my
window, and tiptoed through the backyard. These steps had become routine. Climb over our rotting
wooden fence. Look both ways. Cross the street. Locate the gap in the barbed wire fence outside the
warehouse. Carefully crawl through. (DO NOT scratch yourself again, or mum will get mad and

All Quiet On The Western Front Analysis
In the novel All Quiet On The Western Front written by Erich Remarque, the protagonist Paul deal's
with the new ways of fighting in world war 1 as this war introduced multiple new ways to bring
death and violence. He needs to adapt to living in the trenches, machine gun fire, and the constant
fear of a shell landing on him. This novel portrays the ways in which living styles and weapons in
war changed warfare for the worst, drastically increasing the brutality. During world war one, the
soldiers would have to fight on the battlefield and needed to find a way to stay there without
immediately dying. The military found that digging up a system of ditches in the ground would keep
the soldiers alive long enough to fight. These ditches, named trenches, changed the men inside of
them. The men would live in some of the cruelest conditions within a base than any other previous
war. Men within the trench had to deal with a foot disease known as trench–foot along with constant
splinters, which both caused major damage to feet. When Paul's within the trench heading to the
hospital area, he says "My thoughts become confused. This atmosphere of carbolic and gangrene
clogs the lungs, it is a thick gruel, it suffocates" (Remarque 2.37). This line says how living
condition's inside trenches made soldiers miserable with multiple uncomfortable smells and other
influences. The living conditions of the trench show how world war one had changed warfare for the
worst through the increase in

Consequently, upon reflection, I realise that the man was right; unluckily, for him, to truly be one of
them, I had to kill him. The desperado didn't even put up a fight, I simply let the lustrous, white

through the middle of his neck. It was euphoric, the brilliant liquid streaming steadily out of the

Analysis Of Once Upon A Time By Nadine Gordimer
"You can't protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness." This quote by
Jonathan Safran Foer shows us that no person can protect himself from everything bad without
blocking out the good too. In "Once Upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer, one of the main themes is
that it is impossible for people to protect themselves from everything bad in life. In this short story, a
wife who lives in a nice suburban neighborhood is terrified of being robbed. Her fear drives her to
become extremely anxious. This anxiety makes her buy all sorts of security devices which
eventually lead to the death of her son. The wife's goal is to protect her house and family from
everything bad in their neighborhood. As a consequence of this, she gets super paranoid and ends up
killing her son after he gets stuck in her barbed wire fence. After her son gets stuck in the barbed
wire, she realizes that there is no way that any person can protect themself from all the terrible
things in life. Therefore, because the wife's motivation to protect her family causes her to
accidentally kill her own son, Gordimer shows that people cannot protect themselves from the
terrible things in life.
Primarily, the wife is motivated to protect her family and house, no matter the cost. Towards the
beginning of the story, the wife is becoming uneasy about someone breaking into her house. She
shows us how anxious and paranoid she is when the story says, "Yet she was afraid that someday
such people might

thirty Aussie men – as skinny as us – and wearing slouch hats. Unlike the Japs, they had hairy legs.
And they were standing in rows – serenading us." John Misto created a written visual image that
comes through in Act 1 Scene 7 (Page 52). This is brought up in the play when Bridie and Sheila are
being interviewed by Rick (Host), they were originally talking about the conditions that they were

hunger at Christmas. The Japanese then allowed the Australian men to visit the nurses, while the

This is very important for the story because it is what keeps them strong and keeps them moving
forward without giving up, it's the image of them being able to grasp them emotionally and give
them motivation to continue on til the end of the war, the visual of this can assist the audience and
allow the viewer to be empathic to the POWs. The constant contrasting between the Japanese and
the Australians means it is a permanent competition between who is the superior race. The reference
to the how hairy the legs were of the men meant that they were trying to put down the Japanese.
"Unlike the Japs, they had hairy legs" is referring to the Australian men having hairy legs; this can
allude to the Australians being more 'manly'. This contrasting is an allusion from the Japanese to the
Australians, making it appear as if the Japanese are not 'manly', this could further allude to attitude
that the Australians hold of the Japanese, they are inferior to the white society. Bridie could be
implying that the Australians are superior of the Japanese, being more of a man for having more hair
than them could be a symbol for cultural supremacy. This gives the audience a distinctively visual
image of the play because it is the key to the cultural separation, appearance as well as culture is key
reason why people are so divided and the

The War is Over: Post World War I in Virginia Woolf's Mrs....
War is an important theme in Mrs. Dalloway (1925), a post World War I text. While on the one hand
there is the focus on Mrs. Dalloway's domestic life and her 'party consciousness', on the other there
are ideas of masculinity and "patriotic zeal that stupefy marching boys into a stiff yet staring corpse
and perniciously public–spirited doctors" , and the sense of war reverberates in the entire text.
Woolf's treatment of the Great War is different from the normative way in which the War is talked
about in the post world war I texts. She includes in her text no first hand glimpse of battlefield,
instead gives a detached description. This makes it more incisive because she delineates the after
effects in personal ordinary lives. Judith ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They enjoy a privileged, cocooned lifestyle and do not show any signs of worry about the war and
its consequences unless they wished to put up a pretence of awareness, concern and sympathy as an
instrument of deriving power and authority, like Lady Bruton. Mrs. Dalloway brushes aside the
slight awareness that the war has created horror, havoc and turbulence, the confusion over the
committee for the "Armenians or the Albanians" and the sense that it is impossible to return to the
pre–war era. For her these were insignificant in front of Richard Dalloway's proposal and romantic
gestures, and the flowers. However, Lois R. Robley remarks that "the unfortunate events of
Septimus's suicide interrupts and disrupts Mrs. Dalloway's party, forcing her and society to think
about the death of the young men just returned from war, a war not so soon forgotten." "So prying
and insidious were the fingers of the European War" suggests the all encompassing nature of the
war. No matter how much people might think that they are sheltered, no aspects have been left
untouched. Once the war starts even something as personal as the "geranium bed" is destroyed,
nothing is spared. The most private as well as public spaces are intruded, damaged and scarred by
the war. War affected not just soldiers but also civilians like the 'cook', Lady Bexborough and Miss

World war I is considered one of the bloodiest wars ever...
World war I is considered one of the bloodiest wars ever fought in the history of the world. A major
contributor to the death toll of this war was the new tactic of trench warfare. Trench warfare is a
battle strategy using man made trenches and weapons to attack and take the enemy's trench. This
battle strategy combined with the use of new war technology, and the living conditions in the
trenches resulted in one of the deadliest wars ever fought by mankind.
For about four years France and Germany used trench war as their war tactic. The soldiers were told
to dig the trenches for temporary shelter from gunfire. The trenches would provide a sufficient
amount of cover as long as a soldier would duck. The trenches where long zig–zagging ... Show

Another way that this was an inefficient method was the tedious action of putting on masks. In 1916
tanks started being used as an offensive battle method. At first they were used incorrectly by the
british, but in 1917 they helped them shatter a six mile front. The tanks were deadly and almost
invincible when used correctly.
The technology used to defend the army against the attacking enemy also used different weapons.
For example, Barbed wire would protect against enemy attacks on the trenches. The barbed wire
was a very intimidating tactic to the soldiers because of the fear of becoming entangled. If a trench
is taken over, there are second and third lines of trenches that the soldiers can retreat to. When their
trench is taken over, the army that was pushed back would try to regain their trench and advance
upon the enemy.
The living conditions in the trenches where never sufficient enough for living in, especially when
the soldiers had to stay in them for a few years. The trenches where just ditches in the ground with
no sleeping arrangements. Many of the soldiers would go days without sleep. The rations of food
that the soldiers received were often boring and sometimes inedible because they were rarely given
fresh food. This would limit a soldier's stamina in battle and make it more likely for that soldier to
get killed. The

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is set in the time of the Holocaust and was written by John Boyne in
2006. It explores the evils of the Holocaust through the eyes of a nine–year–old boy. Bruno is
ignorant of the events and horror that surrounds his childhood. He meets a boy named Shmuel 'the
boy in the striped pyjamas' (BITSP) who is a Jew from the other side of the fence. This book is
about how the Nazi's discriminate the Jews because they are inferior or 'the other'. The other is
perceived as a person or thing that is different or distinct (not belonging) from another person in
some fundamental way. In this book the BITSP, the others are the Jews. 'The others' are portrayed

Lieutenant Kotler is a nasty character who is one of the many soldiers who mistreat the Jews
because they are lesser in society. Literary Techniques of characterization, personality, point of view
and mood are used. "Hey you!" he shouted, and then another word that Bruno didn't understand.
'Come over here you–" he said the word again, and something about the harsh sound of it made
Bruno look away and feel ashamed to be part of this all." Pavel came towards them and Kotler
spoke to him insolently, despite the fact that Kotler was young enough to be his grandson. "And
afterwards, when you return to the kitchen, make sure you wash your hands before touching any of

Research Paper On Trench Warfare
Trench Warfare
Trench Warfare created a harsh and dangerous living environment for men. The trenches were under
continuous threat from shells or other dangerous weapons and there were also many health risks
which developed into larger problems for doctors. Apart from the unavoidable cold during the
winters, trenches were often completely waterlogged and muddy infested with lice and rats.
What is Trench Warfare?
Trench Warfare is a type of fighting where both sides build deep holes in the ground. These holes in
the ground are known as trenches. These deep trenches are used a defence against the enemy. These
trenches can stretch for many kilometres and they make it almost impossible for one side to move
closer or towards their opposition. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a front line, also known as the Main Fire Trench, which faces the enemy. The front line
allows you to view over enemy lines. The front line is dug in different sections rather than being dug
in one straight line, so if a shell were to explode inside one of these sections, or any enemy were to
get into one of these sections, it would not affect the whole front line but just that particular section.
Behind the front line you get the support line. It is similarly made to the front line. In the support
line you would find dugouts that are cut into one side of the trench wall. These dugouts were often
quite small, having enough room for only three or four men to use as shelter. No man's land was the
space between the two opposing trenches. It had a large amount of barbed wire and it was a piece of
unoccupied land. No Man's land was heavily guarded by both sniper and machine gun fire and
soldiers were forced to cross this piece of land to look out for the enemies positions.
Life in the trenches:
Soldiers rotated through three stages of the front. They would spend time in the front line trenches,
in the support trenches, as well as some time in resting. The soldiers were always busy whether they
were repairing the trenches, on guard duty, moving supplies and equipment, undergoing inspections
or cleaning their weapons.

for food. As I walk even further, I found myself lost in the Big Apple. I turned off of a street and
through a narrow gully to a community of abandoned tenements behind the barbed wire fence. The
barbed wire fence divides the subway exit door which says "Do Not Enter" in cheap, peeled paint. I
look for some people but all I can see are gangs smoking in the distance. The light that blinded me a
minute ago was blotched by the high, graffiti brick buildings. Even the tiniest fragment of light had
not seeped in to enlighten the

Short Story Of 'The Fence'
"The fence, Fredrick," his sister whispered. "I always remembered the fence". Fredrick shuddered as
he lifted his eyes up to the tall, barbed wire fence towering in front of them. It seemed no less
terrifying than it did those many years ago. It circled the entire Nazi compound, a brutal reminder of
the ruthless hell it held 40 years ago. Fredrick recalled that unforgettable winter morning in
December 1944. The dining table was not set. The kitchen was missing the usual smell of hot
porridge and milk. Outside, Edith and Fredrick could hear unsettling noises – crying, begging,
banging doors, angry shouts. Mama hastily shoved parcels of food into their pockets. "For later, in
case you get hungry, my darlings," she said, kissing their foreheads. Then came the loud banging
and shouting at the front door, startling them all. Papa turned to Fredrick and knelt, staring earnestly
into his eyes. "Fredrick, hold on tight to your sister's hand and don't let her go," he whispered
urgently. "You know I am proud of you. And you are my precious little angel, Edith. Your Ma and I
love you both very much. Be brave." The next moments were a blur. The children were ushered
outside, where army trucks parked in the streets were fast filling with men, women and children.
German soldiers waved and prodded their rifles at the amassing crowd, yelling threats and abuses.
As he was told, Fredrick kept a tight hold of his sister's hand, until they found themselves on an
army truck, surrounded by the

Lincoln State Lake-Personal Narrative
In July 2016, I had a wonderful day planned. My girlfriend, Audrey, and I were prepared to spend a
full day at Lincoln State Park. After eating breakfast at Denny's, we pulled into the entrance of the
state park. With our swimsuits on and backpacks strapped, the hiking began. To say the least, we had
a long, long hike with minor incidents including a small snake that caused me to scream like a little
girl and a tower we climbed even though I am afraid of heights. To wrap up the day, we swam in the
lake infested with little, microscopic minnows and took our turn at canoeing, which ended up
getting us stuck in the middle of the lake. All in all, the day of adventures with Audrey was relaxing
and refreshing, but unfortunately, the excitement was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We sat silently in the car for a couple minutes until Audrey looked at me and said, "I cannot believe
that just happened." We had been driving for thirty minutes when it set in that we just aided in
helping another human being in severe need without thinking twice. I am glad Audrey and I were
there to help those two individuals. But one thing also did sink in. No other car driving next to that
truck cared to stop, and it took another five minutes for someone to finally come to the help of a
shoeless girl and a shirtless

Speech For Steve Jobs Speech
American inventor and entrepreneur Steve Jobs was well known during his lifetime. He introduced
many products and innovations that affect daily life for millions of people. A famous non–business
endeavor that Jobs partook in was his commencement speech for Stanford's graduating class of
2005. In his speech, Jobs elaborates on his own life experiences from birth through founding his
most famous company, Apple, him leaving that company, and ultimately returning. He offers many
pieces of advice, such as to believe that your heart will take you where you need to go, that you
should never settle where you are comfortable, and to always rely on your inner voice. He concludes
his speech with four simple, yet vague words: "Stay hungry. Stay foolish". ... Show more content on

The common phrase "curiosity killed the cat" has real world precedent. The scared character in a
horror film who is curious about the noise in the dark basement, the man who decides he should
know what is beyond the barbed wire fence of a classified facility, or the person who looks up the
wrong thing at the wrong time, can all be considered "too foolish". Personally, I have had these
moments of foolery. I have found myself genuinely asking teachers about their homescapes, only to
later find out that my phrasing has a much different connotation. In my google search endeavors, I
have found islands and towns in Canada during school hours, that have school–inappropriate names,
which resulted in my devices being banned from school grounds. In my search for chemistry
knowledge, I have found myself foolishly handling harmful chemicals that could have easily
resulted in my own or others' harm. In this sense the search for knowledge, or hunger, is never a bad
thing. However, when selfishness leads to negligence this philosophy fails to yield a positive

World War I Was A War

  • 1. World War I Was A War World War I was a war fought between the Allies and the Central Powers in 1914 through 1918. This was the first international war in the twentieth century and possibly the most deadliest war since. Every country was bringing out their finest advanced weaponry and their most strategic methods to succeed. All of the new advanced weaponry and strategies had a huge impact on the way the war was fought. The soldiers entered the war with horses and simple rifles, but left the war with tanks, flamethrowers, machine guns, and even technology like poisonous gas. With all this new technology impacting World War I, the Allies and Central Powers had to create new strategies/technology to fight and defend with, the inhumane methods of killing people ... Several hundred yards behind the front–line trench was the support trench, with men and supplies that could immediately assist those on the front line. The reserve trench was dug several hundred yards further back and contained men and supplies that were available in emergencies should the first trenches be overrun." (Bagget and Jay) Germans also took advantage of trenches and created multiple types of trenches to help them win the war. They were ready for any attack/possibility of invasion and were trying to use trenches as strategically as they could. Trenches would cause damage to nature and the area around it. Imagine how after the war with trenches, there would be multiple tunnels just engraved in the ground and it would of destroyed all the life in that soil and around it. During the war, the sides would use artillery on each other 's trenches so they had to keep on expanding their trenches and making new ones. The artillery would further destruction and cause many craters around the trenches. The way trenches would cause people to get sick was probably not a concern to the forces when creating them. Think about what would happen if soldiers had to sleep and stay in muddy, wet, and dirty trenches twenty– four–seven. When their clothes got wet they wouldn 't have always have spare uniforms and they would have to fight with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. A Dead Man's Path, By Chinua Achebe Traditions throughout culture change with time, yet in most instances, a handful of people refuse to change their methods or beliefs. In "Dead Man's Path," Chinua Achebe creates a changing society and presents a group of people who are unwilling to change their way of life and adapt. Achebe uses symbols, allusions, characters, and setting development to give the reader an interpretation of the changes made throughout society that creates a conflict between a new generation and an old generation. In "A Dead Man's Path," Achebe uses the symbols of a path and a barbed wire fence to effectively capture the conflicting ideas between a new and an old generation. Ani, the village priest, maintains the importance of this path for he states that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1949, many African nations began their surge for independence, and the native people did not accept the social modifications forced upon them. The revelation of the setting comes through the name "Ndume Central School" which is a school located within the African nation of Nigeria (595). Later, the setting reveals the deep divisions that take place in Africa at the time and allows the reader to understand why the villagers resists change. The separation between the school and village symbolizes the division, and this separation captures a modern school fighting a traditional village. Obi enforces the separation with the moving of the path and states that this new path should "[skirt] our premises" (597). The setting enhances the conflict between the villagers and Obi because the Africans at the time resisted the change that Obi enforced within the school. The setting of the school and village enhances the conflict because the school represents the transformation of society, while the village captures the stubborn, old way of living. Achebe produces a theme throughout "A Dead Man's Path" based on the conflict of change through the path, a barbed wire fence, a biblical allusion, and setting throughout the story. The literary devices allow for the reader to establish a strong interpretation of the effects of change and how people within society refuse to adapt from their traditional ways. This story accurately captures the struggle between a new generation and traditional way of life. Even with forced modernization, the refusal of change causes conflict in an ever–changing ... • 3. Barbed Wire Essay Barbed wire helped revolutionize the West by dividing up the land evenly and cheaply. However, some people out West found it to be an impediment to moving across wide plains. Cowboys and Native Americans even came up with a new name for it, Devil's Rope. Joseph Farwell Glidden was a very influential man in the creation of barbed wire and he forever changed the West and the World. Barbed wire helped reform the West, but it had to start somewhere. Joseph Glidden saw a wire attachment at the DeKalb County Fair presented by Henry M. Rose. He used a wood rail and hammered nails into it to hook onto a fence. Joseph Glidden was there with Jacob Haish, and Isaac Ellwood. They each saw this and began to talk to Henry about it. Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Glidden was unsure about this, and he consulted his lawyer about it. The lawyer said to go for it, but to keep the royalties so he could continue to make . Joseph signed the contract and they went into business together. Isaac Ellwood partnered up with Glidden so that he could monopolize the barbed wire industry and focus on the business aspect. His wife also said that Glidden had a better design than he did, which is part of the reason he partnered with Glidden. Haish was a fierce contender, and he went to court to see who got the patent, but Glidden eventually won. Joseph Glidden had patents already, so when he saw the barbed wire, he thought that he could make that, so he did. He was a very creative man and he was intelligent too. Before he invented barbed wire he invented something called the land roller. It had the wheels placed in special alignment so that the wheels did not go over the same land twice. Barbed wire was needed out West, and Glidden's barbed wire was easy to transport so it went West. The wire migrated West because Texas Longhorn Cattle would trample and graze on farmer's crops and the farmers hated it. Cattle would also get run over by trains because they would cross in front of a train on the newly built Transcontinental Railroad. Barbed was put up to line the railways for miles at a time. Some people like cattle drivers and Native Americans hated barbed wire so much that they came up with the new name ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This may not be a question we get asked everyday or know an answer to, however, people have dealt with it all through history. From the holocaust, to african–american rights, you name it, people didn't give up so easily. Law Enforcement And Justice System Taylor Krug 4/18/15 LAWS – Capstone Course Prof. Parys ACI In this course we have taken several field trips in order to get an understanding of the places and operations we have learned of in our previous courses in this degree program. From the patrol officers making arrests, to the courthouses where judges give sentencing, to the prisons where guilty parties serve their sentence, the Law Enforcement and Justice System is a complex yet straightforward system. Meant to grant justice to the community and prevent further atrocities to justice and peace from occurring. But for whatever reason, if these duties are broken, then the gears of justice begin to turn, and in so, the many cogs and belts that run this machine to make it one of the most efficient machines there is. Here we are to discuss my thoughts of the trip I had taken with the class to the State of Rhode Island's Adult Correctional Institution or ACI for short. I have visited the Pastore complex where the ACI is held before in the past, so I am no stranger to the sight of the early 1900's style buildings, the barbed wires and the armed guards. These men look ready to spring into action, a sight I should be happy to see but I still always feel just a slight amount on edge. I've always associated the location with a sense of dread and hopelessness with no way of escape, no chance to see the light of day much like an animal locked in a cage. Analysis Of The Sapphires The Sapphires by Wayne Blair is an award–winning film, which explore the lives of four aboriginal women Gail (Deborah Mailman, Julie (Jessica Mauboy), Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell) and their cousin Kay (Shari Sebbens) throughout their journey and role in the Vietnam War. A range of film techniques such as settings, characters, conflicts and symbols are used to explore prejudice towards their indigenous heritage, with a variety of film techniques as well. In the orientation of the film Blair uses techniques such as setting, this is an important technique as different settings can either show a rise of reduction of prejudice towards indigenous people. The film begins in the Australian outback, where the audience is first introduce to two characters Gail and Kay. We approached the back of the gas chambers, stuck between a barbed wire fence and solidified wall, our only way was forward. Chilling, thick clouds of fog started to sway our direction and helped mask us from German soldiers. Faint voices were heard deep further, but we couldn't identify a thing. The fog slowly receded in the strong gust of wind and what I saw next plunged riddling fear deep down into my heart. The daunting scene exposed to my eyes startled me; I never wanted to eradicate a scene from my consciousness so promptly. Endless pits of ravaged Jewish bodies towered over us and tormenting aromas struck my nostrils. Perpetual confusion grasped my body as I became frozen in fear. Batel quickly tackled me to the ground as German soldiers disposing corpses came unquestionably close. I relinquished my sorrowful agony and focused on the task as it intensified. Increased patrols of German soldiers approached this way and before they could get any closer, we sprinted behind a shed. • 11. The Problem Of The Infant Thinking about these events, I developed the following theory on what could have occurred that evening: At least one adult Bigfoot brought the infant to my house, creating a diversion by scratching on the front door. Then, with our attention on the front of the house, they crept around to the back of the house. The adult lifted the infant over the rail, then set it down on the deck. The infant was too small to reach the carpet without taking one step, in the snow, on the deck, thus leaving a footprint. It then made its way around the glass table, walking on the carpet, which had very little snow on it. The infant opened the dog foot tub, consuming the dog food. The parent then went around to the other side of the deck, reaching over the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The next morning, I went out before daylight to check the ash for footprints. To my shock and surprise, it had worked!! In the ash, on the front left corner of my house, was a very clear footprint! Retrieving my video camera, I began to take video in the low light conditions due to inclement weather forecast to move in later that morning. The ash had also stuck to the bottom of the Bigfoot's foot, this a positive print of the foot in the grass. It appeared from the direction of the prints, the Bigfoot's destination back of the house, possibly to go over the four–foot dog fence into the backyard. The track was fifteen inches long, with the ball of the foot five and a half inches wide, the heel of the footprint was four inches wide. Unfortunately, this was an isolated event. The Bigfoot learn quickly, and though I continued to put the fireplace ash out when the weather would cooperate, the Bigfoot avoided stepping into the ash. We would continue to allow the Bigfoot to eat our dog food as the winter wore on. We did this because, we did not know how the Bigfoot would react if we abruptly removed their food source. In February of 2011, the Bigfoot began to develop a pattern of visiting approximately once every ten days. The scratching on the door stopped and the dog food was taken less often. Personal Narrative: The Industrial Trial Within the last few weeks one of the places that my W203 went that really stood out was the Industrial Trial that was used to help generate ideas from urban walking. There's quite a bit to see on the trail but like anything the best parts are closer to the middle. Personally, the one aspect of the trial that really seemed to catch my eye was the old Elwood Haynes car factory because of its Kokomo heritage. However, most of the time I would of just said that the place is a giant scrap yard that needs to be torn down, however, this time around I might think differently. I stared out from the dirty car window and I sat in my parked car across the road from the slaughter house. Hundreds of cows milled aimlessly with glazed eyes, through dust clouds of the overturned earth. I watched as several other cars pulled up behind mine, checking in my rear view mirror to see a familiar face. Bianca in her little yellow bug looked so out of place on this filthy dirt road. Today was going to be the day we put a stop to the slaughter. Bianca stepped out of her car and I watched as she slowly walked towards the fence of the slaughter house. A man parked further behind us called out something illegible but she took no heed. Ok... this is it. I jumped out of my little old truck, and sprinted across the road to the gate. Bianca had cut the lock and stood back as I slammed the gate wide open. The cows stared with starved for attention but overfed ,eyes in my direction. I ran through the tightly packed animals and shoved over the nearest feeding trough , motioning to Bianca to come with me. She shook her head and backed away, but held the gate open. I began to push the nearest bull and he bucked , starting a panic. The animals raced towards the gate as Bianca pressed herself against it to avoid being trampled. Theme Of The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas An Elegant Flop by Boyne John Boyne was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1971 and studied Literature at Trinity College, Dublin, and creative writing at the university of East Anglia, Norwich. He has published nine novels for adults and four for a younger audience, all of which are actually published in 47 different languages, including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas follows the story of a nine–year–old boy named Bruno who reluctantly moves out his comfortable home in Berlin to 'Out–With' because of his Father's job. After being rather bored in his new dismal house, and given no answers by neither his parents nor servants, he is forced to stay with his older sister who is a constant pain–in–the–neck along with a rather brooding Lieutenant. From his window Bruno has seen countless men and boys huddled by the barbed wire fence, scared of something he just doesn't understand, and they were all wearing the same blue striped pyjamas. • 16. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Text Response Looking over this picture it makes me think of how badly the Jews were treated and how bad they wanted to escape. Jews had been beaten, neglected, and starved. They were taken away from their families and some even killed in front of their loved ones. They would not even stay at one place for very long, they would travel from camp to camp because of the war. It is terrible how they could take someone because they were a Jew and not even know anything about them. It is not that the Jew did anything wrong it is simply just because they are Jews. Secondly, when I look at this picture it makes me think of the movie we watched, "The Boy in The Striped Pajamas" and the book that we are reading "Night." The person to the left of the picture is wearing striped clothing, just as the boy was in the movie. Therefore, it is like this man was once inside one of the concentration camps. The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Persuasive Essay The Boy in the Striped Pajamas Persuasive Paper The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, written by John Boyne, displays the importance of never letting a holocaust happen again, and he puts this into words in a sarcastic way. John Boyne's story is a good teaching tool for the Holocaust, because he displays the overall theme, which is millions of Jews being put into concentration camps, and killed. He adds details of how Jewish people were treated horribly, which is what happened in the Holocaust. However what John Boyne fails to do is elaborate on the little details. Another big and memorable moment when this black area was used was when the new soldiers first arrived in France and they entered walking through the black space and into the wounded soldiers. This action was accompanied with a harsh white light which made the men look skeletal. The revolve helped in creating different locations and atmospheres and also helped mark key moments. One example of this is the ploughing scene. The struggle of the horse was emphasised by the turning of the revolve as it gave the illusion of a far distance. When Joey got caught on the barbed wire, the revolve was elevated and raised to a higher level to emphasise it. Another example of the use of the revolve was during the enlistment scene. As the announcement of war was made, men were encouraged to sign up along with their horses. The fun and exciting atmosphere at the funfair was highlighted by the revolvement. Flags were put up on the stage and also in the first few rows of audience. This made the audience feel involved and echoed how many people were involved in the war. Rather than committing to one strategy, the two were combined in order to create a week–long bombardment followed by an offensive attack on foot. The offensive was planned on a strict time table, as Haig did not trust those who were considered volunteer soldiers. All Quiet On The Western Front Analysis In the novel All Quiet On The Western Front written by Erich Remarque, the protagonist Paul deal's with the new ways of fighting in world war 1 as this war introduced multiple new ways to bring death and violence. He needs to adapt to living in the trenches, machine gun fire, and the constant fear of a shell landing on him. This novel portrays the ways in which living styles and weapons in war changed warfare for the worst, drastically increasing the brutality. During world war one, the soldiers would have to fight on the battlefield and needed to find a way to stay there without immediately dying. The military found that digging up a system of ditches in the ground would keep the soldiers alive long enough to fight. These ditches, named trenches, changed the men inside of them. The men would live in some of the cruelest conditions within a base than any other previous war. Men within the trench had to deal with a foot disease known as trench–foot along with constant splinters, which both caused major damage to feet. When Paul's within the trench heading to the hospital area, he says "My thoughts become confused. This atmosphere of carbolic and gangrene clogs the lungs, it is a thick gruel, it suffocates" (Remarque 2.37). But still, I was curious, the kill had only lasted a minute, not nearly enough to watch the life drain out of his eyes fastidiously. The glossed over look in the brilliant blue cortex vexed me, taunting my inexperience. Watching me, dissatisfied, feeding my adrenaline filled rage. The abeyance besieged me, as I pierced into his fixed face – circling the knife around his eyes, slicing down aimlessly until I hit the corner of his shrivelled lips, filling his filthy mouth with blood. Alluring eyes hung by their sockets, face layered with the various shades of red; the ground was unrecognisable, blood pooled up to my ankles. After examining my work, I started to hastily clean the knife – it had just found its purpose– but it felt heavier in my pocket, now carrying the weight of a kill. The body ... • 29. Analysis Of Once Upon A Time By Nadine Gordimer "You can't protect yourself from sadness without protecting yourself from happiness." This quote by Jonathan Safran Foer shows us that no person can protect himself from everything bad without blocking out the good too. In "Once Upon a Time" by Nadine Gordimer, one of the main themes is that it is impossible for people to protect themselves from everything bad in life. In this short story, a wife who lives in a nice suburban neighborhood is terrified of being robbed. Her fear drives her to become extremely anxious. This anxiety makes her buy all sorts of security devices which eventually lead to the death of her son. The wife's goal is to protect her house and family from everything bad in their neighborhood. As a consequence of this, she gets super paranoid and ends up killing her son after he gets stuck in her barbed wire fence. After her son gets stuck in the barbed wire, she realizes that there is no way that any person can protect themself from all the terrible things in life. Therefore, because the wife's motivation to protect her family causes her to accidentally kill her own son, Gordimer shows that people cannot protect themselves from the terrible things in life. Primarily, the wife is motivated to protect her family and house, no matter the cost. Towards the beginning of the story, the wife is becoming uneasy about someone breaking into her house. She shows us how anxious and paranoid she is when the story says, "Yet she was afraid that someday such people might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Shoe Horn Sonata Distinctively Visual Themes Distinctively Visual Image Page 52 "On the other side of our barbed wire fence were twenty or thirty Aussie men – as skinny as us – and wearing slouch hats. Unlike the Japs, they had hairy legs. And they were standing in rows – serenading us." John Misto created a written visual image that comes through in Act 1 Scene 7 (Page 52). This is brought up in the play when Bridie and Sheila are being interviewed by Rick (Host), they were originally talking about the conditions that they were in, how they were starved and the lack of nutrition, this then moves on to how they sang through the hunger at Christmas. The Japanese then allowed the Australian men to visit the nurses, while the nurses sang a Christmas carol them. "The Japs let us do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is very important for the story because it is what keeps them strong and keeps them moving forward without giving up, it's the image of them being able to grasp them emotionally and give them motivation to continue on til the end of the war, the visual of this can assist the audience and allow the viewer to be empathic to the POWs. The constant contrasting between the Japanese and the Australians means it is a permanent competition between who is the superior race. The reference to the how hairy the legs were of the men meant that they were trying to put down the Japanese. "Unlike the Japs, they had hairy legs" is referring to the Australian men having hairy legs; this can allude to the Australians being more 'manly'. This contrasting is an allusion from the Japanese to the Australians, making it appear as if the Japanese are not 'manly', this could further allude to attitude that the Australians hold of the Japanese, they are inferior to the white society. Bridie could be implying that the Australians are superior of the Japanese, being more of a man for having more hair than them could be a symbol for cultural supremacy. This gives the audience a distinctively visual image of the play because it is the key to the cultural separation, appearance as well as culture is key reason why people are so divided and the ... • 31. The War is Over: Post World War I in Virginia Woolf's Mrs.... War is an important theme in Mrs. Dalloway (1925), a post World War I text. While on the one hand there is the focus on Mrs. Dalloway's domestic life and her 'party consciousness', on the other there are ideas of masculinity and "patriotic zeal that stupefy marching boys into a stiff yet staring corpse and perniciously public–spirited doctors" , and the sense of war reverberates in the entire text. Woolf's treatment of the Great War is different from the normative way in which the War is talked about in the post world war I texts. She includes in her text no first hand glimpse of battlefield, instead gives a detached description. This makes it more incisive because she delineates the after effects in personal ordinary lives. They enjoy a privileged, cocooned lifestyle and do not show any signs of worry about the war and its consequences unless they wished to put up a pretence of awareness, concern and sympathy as an instrument of deriving power and authority, like Lady Bruton. Mrs. Dalloway brushes aside the slight awareness that the war has created horror, havoc and turbulence, the confusion over the committee for the "Armenians or the Albanians" and the sense that it is impossible to return to the pre–war era. For her these were insignificant in front of Richard Dalloway's proposal and romantic gestures, and the flowers. However, Lois R. Robley remarks that "the unfortunate events of Septimus's suicide interrupts and disrupts Mrs. Dalloway's party, forcing her and society to think about the death of the young men just returned from war, a war not so soon forgotten." "So prying and insidious were the fingers of the European War" suggests the all encompassing nature of the war. No matter how much people might think that they are sheltered, no aspects have been left untouched. Once the war starts even something as personal as the "geranium bed" is destroyed, nothing is spared. The most private as well as public spaces are intruded, damaged and scarred by the war. • 32. World war I is considered one of the bloodiest wars ever... World war I is considered one of the bloodiest wars ever fought in the history of the world. A major contributor to the death toll of this war was the new tactic of trench warfare. Trench warfare is a battle strategy using man made trenches and weapons to attack and take the enemy's trench. This battle strategy combined with the use of new war technology, and the living conditions in the trenches resulted in one of the deadliest wars ever fought by mankind. For about four years France and Germany used trench war as their war tactic. The soldiers were told to dig the trenches for temporary shelter from gunfire. The trenches would provide a sufficient amount of cover as long as a soldier would duck. The trenches where long zig–zagging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another way that this was an inefficient method was the tedious action of putting on masks. In 1916 tanks started being used as an offensive battle method. At first they were used incorrectly by the british, but in 1917 they helped them shatter a six mile front. The tanks were deadly and almost invincible when used correctly. The technology used to defend the army against the attacking enemy also used different weapons. For example, Barbed wire would protect against enemy attacks on the trenches. The barbed wire was a very intimidating tactic to the soldiers because of the fear of becoming entangled. If a trench is taken over, there are second and third lines of trenches that the soldiers can retreat to. When their trench is taken over, the army that was pushed back would try to regain their trench and advance upon the enemy. The living conditions in the trenches where never sufficient enough for living in, especially when the soldiers had to stay in them for a few years. The trenches where just ditches in the ground with no sleeping arrangements. Many of the soldiers would go days without sleep. The rations of food that the soldiers received were often boring and sometimes inedible because they were rarely given fresh food. This would limit a soldier's stamina in battle and make it more likely for that soldier to get killed. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It explores the evils of the Holocaust through the eyes of a nine–year–old boy. Bruno is ignorant of the events and horror that surrounds his childhood. He meets a boy named Shmuel 'the boy in the striped pyjamas' (BITSP) who is a Jew from the other side of the fence. This book is about how the Nazi's discriminate the Jews because they are inferior or 'the other'. The other is perceived as a person or thing that is different or distinct (not belonging) from another person in some fundamental way. In this book the BITSP, the others are the Jews. 'The others' are portrayed through the eyes of most of the characters excluding Bruno. The Jews ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lieutenant Kotler is a nasty character who is one of the many soldiers who mistreat the Jews because they are lesser in society. Literary Techniques of characterization, personality, point of view and mood are used. "Hey you!" he shouted, and then another word that Bruno didn't understand. 'Come over here you–" he said the word again, and something about the harsh sound of it made Bruno look away and feel ashamed to be part of this all." Pavel came towards them and Kotler spoke to him insolently, despite the fact that Kotler was young enough to be his grandson. "And afterwards, when you return to the kitchen, make sure you wash your hands before touching any of the food, you filthy–" Lieutenant Kotler repeated the word he had used twice already and he spat a little as he spoke. Characterization is a fairly used literary technique. In this paragraph it explains Lieutenant Kotler's character; he is a very angry and rude person this is portrayed through Bruno's eyes because of how he spoke to Pavel. The only reason why Kotler speaks to Pavel like this is because lesser in society and he is a Jew. The point of View is perceived through 2 people on this statement (Bruno and Kotler). The trenches were under continuous threat from shells or other dangerous weapons and there were also many health risks which developed into larger problems for doctors. Apart from the unavoidable cold during the winters, trenches were often completely waterlogged and muddy infested with lice and rats. What is Trench Warfare? Trench Warfare is a type of fighting where both sides build deep holes in the ground. These holes in the ground are known as trenches. These deep trenches are used a defence against the enemy. These trenches can stretch for many kilometres and they make it almost impossible for one side to move closer or towards their opposition. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is a front line, also known as the Main Fire Trench, which faces the enemy. The front line allows you to view over enemy lines. The front line is dug in different sections rather than being dug in one straight line, so if a shell were to explode inside one of these sections, or any enemy were to get into one of these sections, it would not affect the whole front line but just that particular section. Behind the front line you get the support line. It is similarly made to the front line. In the support line you would find dugouts that are cut into one side of the trench wall. These dugouts were often quite small, having enough room for only three or four men to use as shelter. No man's land was the space between the two opposing trenches. It had a large amount of barbed wire and it was a piece of unoccupied land. No Man's land was heavily guarded by both sniper and machine gun fire and soldiers were forced to cross this piece of land to look out for the enemies positions. Life in the trenches: Soldiers rotated through three stages of the front. They would spend time in the front line trenches, in the support trenches, as well as some time in resting. • 37. Descriptive Essay About New York New York. Phenomenal buildings and structures pierce the sunny sky. The mobbed streets are loaded with taxi cabs and cars go to and from, in various bearings leaving the fragrance of exhaust surfing through the air. The congested sidewalks are loaded with individuals frantic to a shop in which the celebrities dwell. The ongoing flow of pedestrians talking on their cell phones and drinking Starbucks keeps on coming and rushing from store to store. All the sounds and smell of different things mix to make one strong scent and noise. But once again, I was disturbed with the voices of the never ending attractions that call out and envelope me with awe. I once again feel like a young child on shopping spree in a candy store. I was yearning to discover the "New York Experience "and ignored my feet that are swelling from the continuous walking. Fredrick shuddered as he lifted his eyes up to the tall, barbed wire fence towering in front of them. It seemed no less terrifying than it did those many years ago. It circled the entire Nazi compound, a brutal reminder of the ruthless hell it held 40 years ago. Fredrick recalled that unforgettable winter morning in December 1944. The dining table was not set. The kitchen was missing the usual smell of hot porridge and milk. Outside, Edith and Fredrick could hear unsettling noises – crying, begging, banging doors, angry shouts. Mama hastily shoved parcels of food into their pockets. "For later, in case you get hungry, my darlings," she said, kissing their foreheads. Then came the loud banging and shouting at the front door, startling them all. Papa turned to Fredrick and knelt, staring earnestly into his eyes. "Fredrick, hold on tight to your sister's hand and don't let her go," he whispered urgently. "You know I am proud of you. And you are my precious little angel, Edith. Your Ma and I love you both very much. Be brave." The next moments were a blur. The children were ushered outside, where army trucks parked in the streets were fast filling with men, women and children.
