What is an antibiotic?
Fact About ANTIBIOTICS
• A drug used to treat bacterial infections.
• It has no effects on viral infections.
• It was a substance produced by one
microorganism that inhibits the grow of
another.
• 1n 1926, Alexander Fleming discovered
penicillin.
• In 1939, Edward Chain and Howard Florey
further studied penicillin .
• In 1945, Fleming, Chain and Florey won the

• Although most antibiotics occur in nature, they
are not normally available in the quantities
necessary for large-scale production.
• Antibiotic For this reason, a fermentation
process was developed. It involves isolating a
desired microorganism, fueling growth of the
culture and refining and isolating the final
antibiotic product. It is important that sterile
conditions be maintained throughout the
manufacturing process, because contamination
by foreign microbes will ruin the fermentation.
