3. Sagay City’s history is as quaint and as colorful as its name. From a
settlement hewn from the jungle about a century ago, it is today one of the
newest progressive and dynamic city in the Philippines .
Its name was derived from
“sigay”, a semi-spherical shell
which abounds in the city’s many
islets and shores.

4. Sagay was founded in 1860 by Teniente
Francisco Rodriguez and Basilio Cordova in the
mouth of the river called Arguelles what is
known today as Bulanon River.
Later, by the order of the Spanish governor
the town proper was transferred to the Old Sagay
known as Pueblo de Magallanes in honor of
Fernando Magallanes. In 1906, during the
administration of the second President Quintin
Katalbas, the name of the town was officially
changed to Sagay.

5. After World War II, the seat of government was transferred to what is now
considered to be the nerve center of governance, Dalusan. After the undying
dream and long-nurtured aspiration of every Sagaynon to become a city for so
long, Cong. Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. was inspired to author House Bill No.6543,
“An Act Converting the Municipality of Sagay into a Component City of
Negros Occidental,” and Senator Raul Roco with the Senate version for
cityhood Senate Bill No. 1191.
A month and ten days later, on June 11, 1996, his excellency President Fidel
V. Ramos signed into law RA8192, the charter of the City of Sagay. After a
successful referendum on August 10, 1996, Sagaynons from all walks of life,
once again reaffirmed their voice, making Sagay, officially Sagay City.

13. Balay- Kauswagan is fast becoming the convention center in Northern
Negros. An ideal venue for seminars, skills training, art exhibits, trade fairs,
wedding receptions and even a place to stay when you’re into island tour
packages .

14. This church was established during the religious administration of
Recollect Friars in the mid-1850’s. Devotees flock to the Shrine of San
Vicente Ferrer in Brgy.Vito every Friday as part of their religious promise or
called “panaad”.

kin a one-hectare government lot in
Sitio Chloe, Brgy,Rizal. The habitat
of blooms and tree is christened as
Sagay City Garden and Living Tree
Museum, the first ever major project
of Sagay Ladies Circle in cooperation
with the City Government of Sagay.

16. Sinigayan Festival held every 3rd week of March is an annual celebration
and thanksgiving in honor of their patron St. Joseph. Sinigay sa Sagay is an
expression of art and culture of the hardworking and God-fearing Sagaynons
displayed and exhibited during the Annual Sinigayan Festival as eloquent
assertion of thanksgiving on the past year.

patterned after the Bohol River Cruise is fast

cruise at the longest river of Sagay will take
you from Brgy.Fabrica down to Brgy. Old

with acoustic entertainment.

24. Suyac Island is a mangrove eco-park, home to mangroves that are
approximately 150 years old. This Eco-park can be found in Brgy.Taba-ao.

25. The best squid ring in the province can
be had in Sagay and every visitor should
bring this as pasalubong “Valeria's Squid
Rings”. Its factory can be found in Brgy.
Old Sagay where they cook in traditional
way using “kawa”.

26. Sagay is also known for local handicrafts made from it’s namesake
“sigay” and other shells.

27. The 66th city in the Philippines, Sagay straddles a good portion of the
Northernmost tip of the island of Negros. Its land area is 330.34 km²
approximately 127.54 sq. mi.
Sagay is located at the latitude of 10 degrees 53 minutes and 50.52
seconds and longitude of 123 degrees, 24 minutes and 52.75 seconds. It is
bounded in the North by Asuncion Pass and Visayan sea; West by Cities of
Cadiz and Silay; East by the City of Escalante and Municipality of
Toboso; South by the City of Talisay and Municipality of Calatrava. It is
approximately 84 km. from Bacolod City which is the Provincial Capital.
